View from Baton Rouge

Jim Kleinpeter, the outstanding LSU beat writer for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, took time this week to answer five questions about the Tigers and the bowl matchup:

What are the main reasons for LSU’s disappointing 7-5 record?

Everyone knew when Ryan Perrilloux was booted from the team in April it would take LSU down a notch. LSU had no quarterbacks with any experience and despite having a good offensive line and skill players, inconsistent play from Jarrett Lee hurt. He ended up throwing 16 interceptions, and though they weren’t all his fault, seven were returned for touchdowns.

But the biggest problem was on defense, where LSU had enough players from last year’s team to expect much better than what it showed. Twice they allowed 50-plus points, the first time in LSU history that has happened in one season. The defensive line was good against the run but LSU never had a consistent pass rush and young defensive backs repeatedly blew coverages all season. I believe there was a lack of leadership but also that the defense missed former defensive coordinator Bo Pelini’s fiery personality. I think last year’s unit played fiery and this year’s played more passive under co-cordinators Doug Mallory and Bradley Dale Peveto. The co-coordinator experiment was blamed and LSU will hire a new DC shortly after the bowl game.

Which LSU seniors are headed to the NFL?

The best bets are LG Herman Johnson, DE Tyson Jackson and C Brett Helms. Johnson was an All-American and is just a beast. Jackson hasn’t played up to the potential he showed as a sophomore, though he improved this year from his junior season. Helms is undersized, but a smart player. Lots of NFL teams go with smaller, mobile centers now. LB Darry Beckwith and DE Kirston Pittman have looked good at times, but both were nagged by injuries all season, which is a huge red flag for NFL scouts. Junior defensive tackle Ricky Jean-Francois had a groin injury and a disappointing season. He ought to come back, but is no fan of the classroom, so he might test the waters.

Give us a breakdown of freshman QB Jordan Jefferson and what you expect out of him Wednesday night.

We haven’t seen much of Jefferson. The coaching staff may have added a few plays for him that we don’t know about. He did looked rather poised for a freshman against Arkansas. The best thing about him is he is decisive when choosing between run and pass. He takes off, and he made some big plays with his feet. LSU can also go to its option package because he ran the spread option in high school and makes good decisions in that respect. He’s got a stronger arm than the other two QBs. The older players like him and say he’s cool and a leader in the huddle. I think the coaching staff will limit his burden because LSU has so many good players at WR and RB.

Talk about LSU’s offensive line and how it will fare against Michael Johnson and Tech’s front four.

Some may disagree with me, but I think LSU’s O-line was the unit that performed the best and most consistently. If LSU had chosen to run the ball more, it could have led the conference in rushing. It was close to the top. The pass protection was good until the end of the season when the whole team was in a funk. Three of the five are starting for the third straight year and four of them started last year. I haven’t seen Tech enough to handicap the matchup, but I know Michael Johnson is a good one. If he lines up at right end, you will have the best matchup in the game. LSU LT Ciron Black hasn’t missed a start in three years and is just as good as LG Herman Johnson.

How motivated are the Tigers?

I can’t say for certain because we aren’t around the players much, but I would have to guess it’s hard for them to care much about this game. The team just sagged completely after the loss to Alabama, which was sort of a last hurrah. The loss to Arkansas was inexcusable, as was falling behind Troy 31-3. I said earlier the leadership was not good. I think we’ll find out Wednesday. If LSU comes out and plays hard, it will be a testament to its leadership. If they don’t, it will prove my point. This game is a springboard for the players returning. It’s the seniors and how they want their last game to go — that will make the difference.

This game scares me because LSU has a ton of talent. The difficult thing to gauge is their level of motivation. Everything I’m reading says they are down and unmotivated but all of the “experts” thought the same thing about Alabama this time last year and Nick Saban had them ready to play. Saban used Bama’s bowl game very effectively as a springboard for this year’s success. Can Les Miles accomplish the same thing? Who knows? But if he can, Tech will have to play flawlessly to win. LSU is simply more talented.

If, on the other hand, LSU comes out flat, Tech will win handily.

Regardless, one thing I am really looking forward to is seeing some of the “run & shoot” stuff that CPJ has installed. It will be interesting if LSU has spent three weeks practicing to stop the option and we come out and throw the ball 20 times.

This team is the second best team we will have played this year. If we don’t bring our “A” game we get beat. If we fumble the ball away we get beat. Their offensive line will push our defense around, making this a high scoring event…Hopefully our offense can match the many scores that LSU will put on the board. I look for a very exciting game. Win or lose, GO JACKETS!

No Loran, the joke is that gutless football team in Athens. Is Moreno planning on getting off the bench in the fourth quarter of the Cap 1 bowl, or will he be hiding over by Uga like he did in several games this year? Tough times when your best player constantly takes himself out of games at crunch time. GUTLESS!

Loran, glad you are not a player. One of the things CPJ has done is change the mind set of this program. All last year was a joke if you want to talk in those terms. The Reggie Ball era was a joke and mostly because of a thought process like the one you show. I notice Nix was fired from Miami. It sounded like the same press conference when he left here. He and the head coach were not on the same page. Seems you could figure that out before you bolt to another team though thank God and Greyhound he’s gone from here. This team and coaches are far more mature. When you are playing for championships and not just there, it makes a big difference and one of the goals to that championship was beating Georgia. A lot of people don’t consider this team a joke anymore and a lot more will get religion before this show is over.

Did I read that right? Is this “writer” predicting a 7 to 5 Tiger victory? And he’s calling that disappointing for the Tigers?

Let me tell you, if LSU gets a 7 to 5 win, or any win over our boys, then they ought to be partying trousers down. No way, no how these SEC chumps show us up in our own town.

And on the ring deal. I agree that it sounds a little silly. But the boys wanted it. We ought to expect to beat Georgia and not celebrate it when we do like we haven’t ever done it before. But know with that said, the ring is to celebrate, not just the win, but breaking the streak. That’s a little different.

We’ll soon be 3 and 0 in the SEC. Does that get us to the SEC Championship game?

Gutless is something you guys at Tech should know a lot about. YOUR football team has held the patent on that since 1964. When CPJ leaves…and he will, it’ll be back to the same old gutless, roll over crowd of whiners that just can’t seem to accept that in spite of extremely brief periods of half azz success, the trade school will forever be mired in mediocrity. You will never, ever, retain top tier coaches. Tech is just not a destination job. Never has been. Never will be. Enjoy the 9 win season while you can. As we all know it is just a matter of time until Tech will once again be Tech.

Isn’t it kinda weird you fleabags are on a Tech Blog calling Tech fans whiney? Why are you on here? Most fans of other schools who beat tech come to gloat and talk trash. I can understand that. But UGA lost guys. Why so cocky? And don’t say 7 years. That’s in the past brotha. Let’s focus on the here and now. Oh and why don’t you two just:

Go ask for Willie to be fired again

Go Celebrate in another endzone only to have it bite you in the a@@ again

Go get a Tan at Mark Richt’s tanning salon

Go jump on Vanderbilt’s V some more

Go continue to have more players arrested than any other school in College football

Go talk trash about Tech’s “highschool” offense and then get lit up for 409 rushing yards

Go ask Knowshon if he knows who Jonathan Dwyer is yet? (I’ll give him a hint..he’s the guy who had more yards and more touchdowns in the game November 29th)

Go actually graduate from UGA…and then root for them. Hey there’s a concept!

Go think about how your all american safety couldn’t tackle my grandma (Hey I think Roddy Jones just broke another tackle!)

Go win another Preseason National Championship

Oh and quit reading this and….

Go enjoy another 300 something days of knowing you’re the second best team in the State

NOT LAST YEAR. NOT THE YEAR BEFORE. BUT RIGHT FREAKIN NOW

Yep UGAy sure handled being #1 pretty well to. Ya’ll folded like a cheap suit. The difference is we were suppose to do anything this year with 3 QBs with no game experience. UGAy on the other hand had all the talent in world and still couldn’t come close to what LSU has done the last 8 years. We have two National Championships in the last 5 years. When was your last or even Tech’s last NC? Go ahead and answer I’ll wait.

Big difference between the ‘00 bowl game and this one is there is no turnover on GT’s coaching staff. If I recall, Friedgen (sp?) left to be HC at Maryland and his assistant (Bill O’Brien?) was calling the plays…huge downgrade for the Tech offense there.

Also, LSU was fired up for that game as they had not been the dominant team they are now. They were coming off of Dinardo’s last year in Baton Rouge and were glad to be playing a bowl game. This year, they are suffering the disappointment of a 7-5 campaign a year removed from the MNC.

I attended the UGA game in Baton Rouge this year, and the LSU defense can be had.

The wild card will be the QB, Jefferson. He’s an unknown, and sometimes that can help more than it hurts the offense. If your DL plays up to their potential, however, it could be a long night for the freshman.

I think Tech wins, 38-24.

For the record, in response to blackwatchdefense above, I don’t think there is any way Mich St. scores 42 on us, and I think we win the game.

Hope all the Techies had a Merry Christmas, and have a Happy New Year. I will be heading to Orlando tomorrow.

GO TO YOUR OWN BLOG TO POST!!!!

See the Ugag fans like to brag when they win a game or 2 against the Gators in a millenium, then complain when the shoe is on the other foot.

Weren’t the Ugag Mutts preseason #1? And didn’t Tech and the Gators beat yall? So why are you Bragging or talking $h!t….Go lick your balls and smell each others arses.

But please understand this, most of the dumb crap that is posted on here is by Ugag fans that really have nothing better to do but pose as Tech fans.

To all Ugag fans stay safe this New Years and stop humping those hydrants. Also instead of resolutions I suggest that you cpme up with excuses….like the ones that all of you loser fans used when Alabama, Florida, and Tech beat you this year. And when the streak reaches 7 yrs again and you are on the other end in say…..6 yrs……how many coaches will Ugag have gone through. CPJ isn’t going anywhere anytime soon…..And in a couple of years he will not want to leave.

Later Mutts stay out of the road and dont get run over by the Green Machine with Michigan plates.

LSU will play hard for the first half, so Tech needs to stay with them. In the second half, LSU will start to lose interest. It will be then that Tech can make their move and score some points. Remember the defense gets tired playing that option, and the LSU’s defense will get tired too.

Let’s face it; the FSU player doesn’t fumble going over the goal line, and Stafford doesn’t throw the interception and tech is its usual 7-5 and in the Emerald Bowl.

Oh well, even a blind chicken finds a kernal every once in a while. Next year it will be back to an Emerald Bowl loss, tech fan complaining, and some quality school decides to replace their coach with Johnson. Then it is back to the past for tech.

Probably because their your team and that’s who you root for. Tech was picked to be at the bottom of the ACC and ended up having a great year. 9-3 is a big step forward from 7-5 and the smurf turf bowl. If you were in my shoes and UGA had stuggled the way Tech had you’d get excited too. Remember losing 3 straight to Tech and then beating them. Great feeling right? Well Ok then. Want to know what I didn’t do during those 7 years we lost to UGA. I didn’t go on their blogs and act like Tech won. I didn’t talk a whole lot of trash because there wasn’t much to say. My team lost. The rings - well we don’t know the whole story on the rings and what else they were for. The way the article read, the rings had another purpose and 45-42 was added on by the seniors. I agree on the surface this can appear to be a little over the top.

Outcome - GT 35, LSU 20 Similar to another poster, I see the first qtr starting slow for both teams and a fairly close game at the half, but Tech will pull away by the late 3rd and into the 4th

Overall opinion of these blogs - some of you guys get carried away. some Tech fans, some UGA fans. some of you do try to show some class. and who are these idots who think that Tech doesn’t need sidewalk or bandwagon fans. stupid. To everyone obsessing about the rings:

The rings are one of the bowl gifts being given to the players to commemorate the season. This is VERY common. The seniors on this year’s team were given some input as to the design of the ring and chose to include the score of the UGA game. That’s certainly understandable since it was a watershed moment in their careers at Tech.

Only the headline writer at the AJC has insinuated that the rings were given as a reward for winning the UGA game. Some of you people (both Tech and UGA fans) should actually read the articles instead of getting all of your info from the headlines.

UGA players will be getting bowl gifts too. They may well be getting rings - I haven’t heard. If they do, I’m sure we’ll be able to see them soon on eBay. As I recall, that’s what many of the UGA players did with their rings a few seasons back.

To all dumbass dog fans talking about the ring. Did you ever hear of a guy named Theron Sapps? Probably not since you don’t know squat about your teams history. So let me enlighten you. They called him the “drought breaker”. Ever hear of the 8 in a row tech put on you? After GA finally won the 9th game they retired his jersey. Wow, retired a jersey vs getting a season ring. Read up on your teams history you f’n tards before running your d*ck suckers next time. You call Tech a joke and you guys have a jersey retired?!!?!! Talk about PATHETIC!! HAHAHAHAHA!!

The only thing more pathetic than giving out rings for a 9-3 season is bragging about accomplishments that are over half a century old. Do you Techies even realize that your 8 game win streak ended in 1956. That was not a typo folks. I said 1956. I guess Tech fans still use rotary phones and watch black and white TVs too. GT has played two SEC teams this year so far. In those two games they piled up 847 rushing yards on 110 attempts. That’s an average of 7.7 yards per carry. Not bad against the mighty SEC. If they do the same type of damage agianst LSU they will have accumulated more than 1,200 yards in just three games, all against the SEC.

If that happens, GT’s rushing yardage in three games against SEC schools would be only 600 yards shy of UGA’s rushing yardage of 1,800 for the entire season. Heck, some D-1 schools didn’t even rush for 1,200 yards in 12 games and GT has a chance to do it in just three games, all against mighty SEC schools.

How is LSU going to smack the Jackets when Georgia couldn’t do it in Athens. And if Johnson was leaving what a good year for it. CPJ likes coaching a new concept in modern day coaching. Ross lost his patience when his players were complaining that the coaches had their family with them at bowl games yet the players couldn’t have their’s including girlfriends, then complained about the gifts from the bowl. Curry has always been for Curry, OLeary was an Irishman called to the mother ship. When Ross came back to college coaching he was so jayed by the selfish athletes he went to a hopeless Army, OLeary had been one of the top 10 coaches in the country, but his resume didn’t introduce him right, ND has not been the same since. Curry was Curry, the Alabama preacher that had an empty church. No Johnson is different. He likes his players and they like him. He won at a military academy while Bobby couldn’t, never played at a college level which made him all the more remarkable and a real guy when it comes to communication, something a lot of public figures could learn from.

By samjones

The rings were not a part of the bowl package. The coach decided to give the rings instead of money. Even Tech fans are embarrassed by this. Beat GA, don’t make it to the ACC title game, finish 9-3 and hey … get a ring with the Tech/GA score on it. Can you name another team that would do something like that? No, didn’t think so. Good luck tomorrow … don’t be so cocky and you might win. You are building your whole season on one win. That is sad. I am a UGA fan but would really like to see Tech win.

By braveswin

December 30, 2008 5:50 PM | Link to this

UGA lost to GT because they did not respect them or deep down believe they could lose to them. That game game will serve as a wake up call to all that follow. CPJ might very well take GT to heights not seen on the flats in years… Then again this might be the only time in his tenure GT can sneak up on teams that are better that GT and sneak out a win. Time will tell……………GT is like the cicadis…………once every 7 years they come out and make a little noise then go back into hiding……..grab that ring boys

Too big a deal made out of the ring. A ring symbolizes something great, something of importance, a milestone if you will, once in a lifetime thing. Or maybe once every 8 year type of importance. Did you get a degree form Ga. Tech? No but look at my ring!! Funniest thing i ever heard. Is it a ring for the finger or toe? Anybody know?

Amen to the bone stickers as I have said before. It is just plain tacky and tasteless.Who are they trying to copy, the Buckeyes or Seminholes? It reeks of BIG ME,little team.

If it were up to me, Tech would have plain helmets and no names on jerseys.ND, PSU & Bama have plain helmets. So should Tech. We don’t need that trash.

I’m getting tired of LSU fans talking smack about beating GT in 2,000. How many players are on either team from that game?? >>>> 0 How many coaching changes have happened between the schools between 00 and now? >>>> 2. For god sakes the Dome has even been remodeled sense then! HAHA So this game can in no way be measured by the game 8 years ago. GT has the momentum, hunger, and the right man wearing the headset on the sidelines. Close game going into the half 17-14 GT. Final score will be closer to 41-27. GO JACKETS THWG!

P.S. UGA will manhandle the Spartans and I actually hope they do. That will make GT look better and likely help Stafford and Moreno rest easy about leaving UGA for the NFL. UGA 45-MSTATE 17

If Georgia Tech wins …

• The Jackets will have their first 10-win season since 1998 and just their third since 1956.

• It will end its bowl losing streak at three.

• The Jackets will have a chance to finish in the top 10 of the AP poll since 1998.
