How dangerous are these Tigers?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
LSU’s last impressive performance came more than two months ago when the Tigers won 24-17 at South Carolina.
Since then, they’ve gone 2-4 with victories over Tulane and Troy. They’ve given up 31 points in each of their last three games. They’ll start a true freshman quarterback, Jordan Jefferson, in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. It will be Jefferson’s second start.
In addition, the 7-5 Tigers are dealing with impending changes on their defensive staff.
That said, Tech has plenty to worry about.
For starters, there is no shortage of bigtime talent on LSU’s roster.
Running back Charles Scott (1,109 rushing yards, 15 TDs), wideout Brandon LaFell (61 catches, 903 yards, 8 TDs), and defensive ends Rahim Alem (8 sacks) and Tyson Jackson (8.5 tackles for loss) are just some of the Tigers’ playmakers. Trindon Holliday is an electric return man.
Coach Les Miles is 3-0 in bowl games at LSU. And you know the Tigers are hungry to redeem themselves after a disappointing season.
Tech fans, what concerns you most about this matchup?

If we don’t come out with total focus in this game, we will lose to LSU. Les Miles will surely try to use the game as a springboard for next season, much the same way Nick Saban did last season with ‘Bama. He has plenty of talent to work with; all he needs to add is some motivation.
I’m a little concerned by the reports that Tech’s bowl practices have been less gruelling than during the reglar season. Hopefull, we don’t come out soft.
We should be fielding the better team Wednesday night assuming they are properly prepared.
Here’s to a 10 win season and a happy new year!

All those things you mention worry me, but in the end, I think it comes down to turnovers. If we take care of the ball, we win. If we put it on the ground a few times, it could get ugly. We aren’t good enough yet to overcome those kinds of mistakes against a team with the talent of LSU.

LSU has some great talent, but is very undisciplined — especially on defense. That means Tech will break some big plays and probably win by a couple touchdowns, maybe more.

Folks, we’re about to be 3 - 0 in the big bad SEC. And how tough is that conference? Doesn’t seem all that tough to me.
SEC players are generally athletic freaks and rely on their talents to get by. In most cases that works just fine at the college level. But against the thinking man’s offense, it takes discipline. Three and out future NFLers don’t have time for that.
Bring it to them Bobby.

Reporters should stick to reporting. Your so-called predictions are ridiculous. To think that any running back could run for over a thousand yards against the Jackets defense is silly. And what’s worse? 15 touchdowns?
Son, what in heaven do you think the score will be? 222 - 0? We beat Cumberland by that score, but I don’t think it’s likely in today’s game.
This Alem fellow may be good, but no player is sacking our quarterbacks 8 times in a game. It will not happen.
I usually follow your internet-based blogs, but this time your game prediction is all wrong.
Merry Christmas to all.

What concerns me most goes back to the last time these two teams played in the Georgia dome. The LSU band and fan support were awesome. I was sitting near the GT band and when the LSU band played you couldn’t hear our band. I believe the GT players were overwhelmed by the noise and excitement from LSU. Tech had the better team on paper, but LSU took the win quite easily. This is Bobby Dodd stadium and LSU must be taken seriously or the result will be the same.

I’m just so frightened about this game. This is a big, bad 3 win SEC team and all the UGA fans are saying that our offense is just a joke and that everyone is going to figure it out and shut it down and that our team is made up of 2 and 3 star players and that we just got lucky against UGA. How can Tech possibly win this game? How did we get into such a mess ?

No concerns what so ever. The players are healthy and we have Paul Johnson as our coach. 48-10. Mark it down.
Sissy, the last time LSU played Tech in the Dome George Godsey tore up his knee in the first quarter. The loss had nothing to do with bands and fans. I’ll be at the game and sitting in the LSU section. Their fans are not too fired up about this game and they are selling tickets ASAP. Tech folk, even the sidewalk lot, show up loud and make the Georgia Dome the home field advantage it should be.

Unless Tech comes out really flat, and LSU comes out super-fired up, I can’t see us winning by less than 17.
Remember, they only beat Tulane and Troy the second half of their season, and they had to rally to beat Troy.

I think LSU probably has about 20% more athletic ability than we do up and down the roster. I think about 1/3 of their team will play pro football. And I think GT SHOULD beat LSU; not because of talent, not because of skill, but because of coaching and want-to. If either of those fails, we don’t have the athletic prowess to make up for a flat game.
But, I saw too much Gailey football. I have to remember that CPJ is on the flats now. I don’t think Tech will come out flat in the next year.

Fellow Techsters,
We have never fared well playing the Bengal Tigers. I harken back to ther Joe Auer dropped pass that would have sealed a victory in the early 60s to the bowl game a few years back.
Like the uga dawgs, to beat the Tigers, you must cut their heads off to kill them - just like a water mocassin.

LSU is NOT to be under-rated, especially in this game. They have proven many times in the past their ability to play strong in bowl games (witness the Peach Bowl from ‘00 when they rendered Tech scoreless in the 2nd half to win 28-14). LSU has some BIG boys on their team (they grow ‘em big down in the swamp). But, if Tech sticks to its gameplan, doesn’t turn the ball over and plays 60 minutes of attentive and intelligent football we’ll be fine.
Hey “hop” … go back to school and learn how to spell. Your post (above) is senseless. Me thinks you were trying to make some sort of jab at Tech, but I’m not sure. 45-42 and (soon to be) 3-0 against the “mighty SEC” … shove it up your A$$ and sit on it for the next 11 months. Cheers.

What worries me about this game is simply history. Plain and simple. We should win this game on all counts, but I also thought we should have beat UVA easily, so you can never be sure.
Actually, to be fair, my one major worry is that the long layoff might disrupt our offensive rhythm. Our Defense should be improved with the layoff (thanks to injury recoveries). The other concern is the true freshman QB might turn out to be really good. He is going to get a whole 2 weeks of practice as a starting QB, and pass defense is our achilles heel, thanks to our young secondary.

If GA Tech comes out and plays like they did against North Carolina, they lose. If they come out like they did against Miami, they win.
Don’t underestimate LSU. They have great athletes and something to prove. Les Miles is a gambler, just like Paul Johnson, so if our Defense falls asleep at the switch, they will pay the price.
On the other hand, GA tech has proved that they have learned the new offense quicker than anyone thought was possible and have some skill players who are really well suited for it. Throw in the new offensive wrinkles that the team has had a chance to install during the break, and it could be a really fun game to watch from an offensive perspective.
Defensively, I would put GA Tech’s Defensive Line against anyone else in the Country. The LB’s have really stepped up and the DB’s have really stepped up.

I definitely think Miles will have his team fired up and ready to play. I’m sure LSU has been working to correct some of their problems during the regular season.
I’m not too worried about Tech being flat. Coach Johnson has eased off on practice as both a reward for a great season and to allow a very limited roster to recover from a long and grueling season.
Tech should absolutely win this game, but I think it will be closer than most of the posts above. I suspect that Tech will jump out early, as they have in many games this season, and will need to fight off LSU into the 4th quarter before putting the game away.
I’ll be there with my family. Based on Tech’s ticket sales I think this will be a very loud and fired-up Tech crowd.

According to scout.com, here is how recruiting over the past 5 years stacks up for LSU and GT:
year - lsu > gt 2005 - 19th > 48th 2006 - 7th > 49th 2007 - 5th > 15th 2008 - 7th > 37th 2009 - 4th > 24th
Clearly, on paper, GT has NO…and I mean NOOOOOO SHOT! They don’t play the games on paper. UGA had far superior talent from recruiting also…bigger…stronger…faster…more stars…the catch is motivation.
If our guys are hungrier, smarter, and work harder, then we can beat LSU. If our guys ‘buy into’ being ranked ahead of LSU and for even a second think that we have the better team…..then we are totally screwed. Our guys win by working harder and wanting it more than the bigger/stronger teams. If we come out soft, we will get killed. If we come out wanting it FAR MORE between the ears and in the heart, then we can win a close one.
I hope GT hasn’t let it’s ‘success’ go to it’s head. COME ON GUYS..WE ARE TRUELY THE UNDERDOGS..GET HUNGRY…GET THAT FIRE IN YOUR BELLY…DO NOT END THIS SEASON ON A DOWN NOTE…LSU WANTS TO END ON A HIGH NOTE…LSU APPEARS TO HAVE ALL THE MOTIVATION…GT…GET HUNGRIER AND PLAY HARDER AND YOU CAN WIN!!!!

Like someone else said, it comes down to turnovers. If GT doesn’t turn the ball over, they win. LSU has a lot of talent but no more than Georgia. The GT offense negates speed and athleticism by forcing a team accustomed to flying to the ball to play assignment football.
And just FYI, the triple option is simply one component of the entire GT offense. They might run that 20% of the time. Its a spread option offense that you could probably throw for a million yards in if you wanted to-in other words, this isn’t your father’s old school wishbone.

I am tired of people saying that other teams will “figure out” our offense. Just because you know what another team is going to do, doesn’t mean you can stop them. Many other teams run some form of a pro-style offense—an offense that other teams see regularly—but that doesn’t mean that it can easily be stopped. The same thing isn’t said about the pass-based option offense of Fla or TTech or others.
I do think that it will be close, but GT should win if it doesn’t turn the ball over.

To all those talking about the turnover problem, keep in mind that we have not had that problem for the past two games.
Against Miami, we lost one fumble on a bone-crushing, blind side hit. Against UGA, we lost no fumbles - our only turnover was an interception on the hail mary pass at the end of the first half.
Just as Paul Johnson said early in the season - as the team gets more comfortable with the offense, the turnover problem will take care of itself.
The exact same thing happened when he took over at Navy. The first year, they were a fumbling mess. The second year, they were about average on turnovers. By the third year, they were (and are) a well-oiled machine.
We need to trust our coach. History has proven that things will only get better.

the record is Eight Straight
GT win empty the bench by the 4th quarter.
Dwyer 12-15 carries, 130-160 yards, 2 TD’s. He doesn’t play the most of the 2nd half. Thomas, Jones, Cox, Nesbitt all scored at least a TD.
GT 52 LSU 27…I really don’t think LSU will score that many points, just playing it safe since we’ll be playing our 3rd and 4th stringers late.
The universe is straitening back out again, the dawg fans are pulling out “SEC 2 out of the last 3 National Championships Card”. Funny, they hate the teams who won them until they have to ride their coattails.

The nervous thread that runs through this blog concerning some historical failures is totally understandable, but irrelevant. The only “history” that matters is Coach Johnson’s at Tech. Look at two examples. Tech was 0-12 against FSU in the ACC when they played this year. On “THE PLAY”, Taylor was not thinking about that streak; just playing hardnosed football - put the helmet on the football. Second, Tech was 0-7 and counting against UGA when we went up there to play. UGA did a very good job defensing the options in the first half, leaving us 16 points down at halftime. What you cannot do against the option is “relax” as they did to open the second half. In 19 offensive plays the option resulted in 26 unanswered points in the third quarter. It’s very hard to resume “disciplined” defense once you’ve turned it loose. To this point, Tech has proven to itself that Coach’s style of football wins. They KNOW if they play focussed, they are most likely going to win. Enjoy the game. That’s why they play.

Despite LSU’s horribly underachieving season, they are still one of the best teams Tech will play all year. Tech fans seem to think that they have reached some elite status where there team can just show up and win. I pray to god your team is as stupid as you are. Nothing would make my New Years better than seeing another Tech choke job in a bowl game.

I am cautiously confident about this game. Coach Johnson will not let our guys think they will win by showing up. He will remind them of the LSU recruiting pedigree, and tell them that these guys are fast, big, and deep at all positions.
With that said, my biggest concern is with our DB’s, especially since JWD is still out with the hamstring injury.
I think GT wins by 10 point if we don’t turn the ball over more than once. If we turn the ball over multiple times, all bets are off, and LSU could easily win.
Our biggest advantage is Paul Johnson vs. Les Miles. That one is a big check for GT!!

I remember Gardner Webb. Josh Nesbitt and Jaybo Shaw didn’t play. Calvin Booker did. Suffice to say, if Calvin Booker is taking snaps on Wednesday, Tech’s either 40 points ahead or in real trouble.
I watched UNC get beat today and they beat themselves with TO’s. They beat the spread nonetheless.
We’re three plays away from being 11-1 also.
LSU’s last home SEC win was in September against Mississippi State 34-24. Our last home SEC win was against Mississippi State 38-7 with a 2nd string QB.

I saw the last Chick-Fil-A bowl as well. We led 14-0 at half time, and lost 28-14. Their fans and band are loud, very loud… Their team hit hard, very hard (6 fumbles as I recall).
Also, while we were 3 plays away from being 11-1, I’ll bet we were also 3 plays away from being 6-6 (FSU, BC, GW). So let’s not get too full of ourselves.
When teams get cocky and see they are favored, that is when they tend to let their guard down and feel the game is in the bag, just like all of us felt at halftime at the last Chick-Fil-A bowl.
So fire up Jackets, stay focused, and see if you can really beat the mighty SEC three times this season. Just as one fellow pointed out, they are faster and bigger, and were higher rated recruits than you, so it is time to go out and prove the recruiting experts wrong!! And this time prove it in both halves of the game!!

LSU has nothing to lose. No expectations to live up to at this point. That makes them dangerous.
I think we have the talent and the confidence to win. Doesn’t mean we can just put on the uniforms and walk out there and expect them to hand us the game.
LSU has had 4 weeks to prepare. They have something to prove about their future. Hopefully we hang onto the ball, keep them off-balance with some good play sequencing and smother them defensively.

@buck - explain that logic to me? WVU beats UNC by 1 point on a late turnover and thus LSU will beat Tech. QED?
Also, as I type the ACC is 2-1, with Miami 1 td behind Cal early in the 2nd quarter. With a record number of teams from 1 conference eligible, we still have 5 more games after tonight before we can declare any underachievement this season.
Come back the first week in Jan and we’ll talk. I think the ACC will show pretty strongly tihs bowl season.

Wow. Some idiot has coped my name and is posting nonsense again. Within an hour of mine. He was just waiting. Wow. Sad.
There is actually another Tech fan that is taking my argument to the extreme in an attempt to discredit me. I’m guessing that he’s afraid that if people listen to the challenge that I put forth to the Tech Family and that as a result he will be squeezed out of the stadium. I doubt that will happen. But I guess he’s a little worried.
I have never said that sidewalk fans be banned from attending games or should they not support the team. What I have said is that the Tech Family should take it upon themselves to buy the tickets and fill the stadium ourselves and not rely on the walkabouts to do our job for us.
Simple.
Now please await for a second post from the other TechMan that will attempt to say things like “I hate all sidewalk alumni” or “I’m a dawg and f you all” Something silly like that. My guess is that it will come within the hour. You’ll recognize it by the rather poor grammar and sentence structure. He also is prone to capitalizing random words.
I support Tech 100% and everyone else that does too. I simply want the Tech Family to step up and represent the Institute. I have faith that we will at the Dome.
Fake TechMan, now it’s your turn.

As I said before, the SEC’s only hope is UF. lsu4ever is living in the past. He had better lay off the angel dust. The best team in the ACC (Tech)should be playing the best team in the second best conference (OU)for the NC. The SEC shouldn’t even be playing in the game. Think about it.

I did think about it and I’m still nodding my head in disbelief. I love the jackets, but let’s come down to earth Bug.

Here I am buddy. Do me a favor. Let me know how many of the fans wearing Tech colors at the Bowl are actual graduates from Tech. You think this game is sold out without any support from “sidewalk” fans? I understand you would like more support from the Tech families. That makes sense. Sidewalk fans will always be there though. At every stadium. In every College town. It’s just something you’ll have to live with. What you say on this blog will not change the amount of support by the fans. What the players and coaches do on the field will. Isn’t it kind of sad you’re surrounded by “sidewalk” fans every game and there is nothing you can do about it. If we keep winning that will only get worse for you. Do you not realize we live in a bandwagon city (hence the support for the hawks and falcons…two stadiums that were empty quite recently). So you’re point will fall on deaf ears buddy. And I’ll continue to be Techman part 2. Another A**hole just like you. The Saga continues….

LSU certainly may win but if Tech loses to a team with only three wins in a conference as poor as the SEC was this year, then it shows we have a lot of improvement to make. Congratulations to the AJC on doing some real reporting by analysing the SAT scores for football players. Tech certainly looked good here but the main point of the article is that football players and real students are far apart academically.

Not very dangerous at all. This Dawg knows that you guys will win by three td’s. LSwho plain out stinks this year. Their offense looked like our defense. We all know how bad they were. Good luck tech.
Go Dawgs!

Well you got me there. Maybe I have been a bit of a snob. I appreciate all fans and hope are stadium is full no matter who is in it. I wish there were more Tech families and grads but if there’s not that’s ok. You are all welcome in my stadium! Go Jackets!

This LSU team underperformed this year with two incompetent co-DC’s and it took 11 games to find Jordon Jefferson, our true fresman QB. The Tigers have something to prove big time with 18 seniors who are wearing BCS Championship rings who want to go out with a W. Wait until you see JJ perform tomorrow night and light up the scoreboard. Tigers by 10.
