Questions for the Jackets
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With the Jackets off until Friday, it’s a good time to look back on this surprising season.
We asked the players to pick out the most memorable moment. We asked them at what point they started believing this would be a special season. On a lighter note, we asked them to tell us their favorite Christmas gifts.
Here are some of the best answers:
A-back Lucas Cox said that after the 19-16 win at Boston College, a team that “came in here and destroyed us last year, when Matt Ryan had a heyday, once we beat them I thought we could do whatever we wanted.”
He couldn’t pick between two moments, Josh Nesbitt taking a knee against Georgia and Florida State as time ran out. “Against Florida State I’m going to shake hands and I’m getting slapped in the head by all the fans on the field. That was probably the most fun time.”
Best Christmas gift: Nintendo’s N64. “I was probably in 5th or 6th grade. It was awesome. That’s when video games took over our lives.”
B-back Jonathan Dwyer pointed to the first two road games at B.C. and Virginia Tech. “Even though we came out of Virginia Tech with a loss, just realizing how close we were, I realized the potential we had, that we could have a dominant team.”
Top moment? Easy. “Georgia. Going out there and beating them at Sanford Stadium, between the hedges, ripping the hedges after the game. That was a great memorable moment.”
Best Christmas gift: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles playset. “I was 5 or 6 years old. That was the show I used to watch all the time, we’d go crazy when it came on. Just having the toys, and my own imagination to play with them, that’s a great thing.”
Left guard Cord Howard said the win over Florida State proved “that we could play up to competition. The greater the competition, the more we play up.”
Howard said the season flew by. “Every week was like bam, bam, bam, bam, pretty much over with. When I got to the Georgia game, I was like, We’re playing Georgia and it’s like we just got out of camp.”
Best Christmas gift: Harley Davidson Big Wheel. “I was probably around seven. That was one of my all-time favorites. My parents saved it for a long time.”
Defensive tackle Vance Walker said he knew Tech would be good even before CPJ was hired. “I just knew the type of players we had. Past years, I didn’t know everybody because I was an underclassman. Being at the top, a senior, looking down, I could see the players who were going to play. I knew the attitudes of the guys on the team and I could just see we would be successful.”
He’ll savor most the wins over Georgia and FSU. “Those two alone will be the biggest things that I remember from this year.”
Best Christmas gift: Playstation. “When it first came out, I was like 10. I have memories of that Playstation. That definitely made my life…I didn’t think I was going to get one. It was for me and my brothers, actually. I was pretty excited because my parents aren’t really with technology. They had no idea. It surprised me that they would get one for us.”
Linebacker Brad Jefferson said he knew the Jackets would be good during camp, “when everything started connecting, when we started getting used to the coaches and the new offense they brought in and the new defense. They put in plays and we just started catching onto it and we started rolling.”
Beating Georgia stands out more than anything. “After the game, we really didn’t know what to do. You couldn’t explain it, how you felt. It was unbelievable.”
Best Christmas gift: “The color Gameboy. It had just come out. When I got that, you couldn’t tell me anything. That’s all I wanted.”
Quarterback Josh Nesbitt said the last two weeks of camp, “I could see the team developing. With our defense and running the triple option, I knew we could give a lot of teams trouble.”
Best Christmas gift: money. “My mom gave me like $300 dollars when I was 15.” Any specific reason? “Who knows?” he said with a laugh. “I was just glad she gave it to me. I didn’t ask any questions.”
Some other favorites…
Cooper Taylor - hunting bow; Michael Johnson - hunting rifle; Roddy Jones - a TV for his room when he was 11.
So how would you answer these same questions?

Why are we forced to say Happiest Holidays? When we need to say Merriest Christmas? That’s what is wrong with this country now. That is for another time.
I do appreciate our fine boys in gold, rather they celebrate Christmas or the others like the Kwanza or the Hanakah. They are all fine gentleman.
I do question the gifts they are asking for. These are all toys for tots.
When I was their ages I wanted an auto-mobile. And a lovely lady professor. The joys of youth.
Now these boys want games and mutated turles. I will never understand it. But as long as they beat Georgia I support them!

Going to the UGAg game and seeing 80,000 fans that looked like they had gotten run over by a train (the Roddy express!) as they left the game, was my favorite moment of the season.
I was 9 in ‘90 and I sat in Santa’s lap and told him all I wanted for Christmas was a Citrus Bowl victory for my Jackets. That’s always been my favorite gift.
But who cares because I’m just asidewalk fan whose season tickets should be sold to alumni, right techman?

Buzz29, if the alumni can’t properly support the program, you are more than welcome to join the fun. It’s our own fault. But I’m done with that conversation.
The FSU win was huge! That monkey was riding our backs for years. It was symbolic really. We’ve passed FSU as a program and it finally showed on the field. Finally. The ACC is ours for the taking. 2009 and on…
For today, Merry Christmas to all and to all a big wheel.

Easily the best moment is Roddy Jones’ breakaway touchdown against UGAg. I have that picture on my door at work with the caption “The (so-called) high school offense being chased by the junior high defense”.
Second best moment is the end of the FSU game. Haven’t seen that kind of excitement on the Flats in a while. Go back and watch the home videos on YouTube. The noise goes on forever.
I started to believe when we split with BC and VT, both close games. I knew then our defense was something special, and if we could just hold onto the football, we’d be scoring some points.
Best gift ever? Beating Georgia, of course :)

The best of ‘08 was the Tickle Pile after beating the Mutts. Everyone was so intense it was almost overwhelming. I actually saw fans with their eyes rolled back in their heads. I can’t wait until ‘09.

If not, than I wish you a Happy Holiday because you seem to need one.

IM’66 & EVERYONE ELSE, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
BEATING THE FLEABAGS TO RETAIN THE 8 STRAIGHT RECORD 45-42 WAS THE BEST XMAS PRESENTS EVA!!!
GOSH, I’ll never forget my TI-85 x-mas present when I was 7. WOW, POLYNOMIALS, X-VAR, COS, SIN, TAN, MATRS, VECTORS, PIE, etc… all in one Calculator. I’m getting goose bumps thinking about it.

Actually, I don’t have anything better to do at the moment.
Look, I’m going to be completely honest here. I didn’t see Tech going 9-3 this year. In fact, I thought a losing season was a very real possibility. Nor did I think it possible that Tech could knock of my Dawgs. I was cleary wrong. Its all water under the bridge now. I’ve moved on.
That being said, I think Tech fans are overreacting about what their team accomplished this year. You’re kind of making fools of yourselves to be quite blunt. You claim to have reached some elite status, but elite teams do not get excited about 9-3 seasons and trips to the Chicken Bowl. Nor do the get excited about beating 8-4 unranked teams like FSU. Even the Georgia win was a bit of a fluke in my opinion. We had one of the worst defenses in program history and if not for two unfortunate turnovers probably would have won the game. Yet, Tech fans act like they creamed us by 30 points and will beat us for all of eternity. Tech fans have made bold claims about ACC dominance, BCS bowls, recruiting windfalls, and even national championships. I am not making this up. I have heard these things on these very blogs repeatedly. That’s some pretty tall cotton for a program that’s had a grand total of TWO ten win seasons in the past twenty years, don’t you think?
I just do not understand Georgia Tech fans. I’ve been following Tech and UGA for quite some time. Tech fans are bipolar. High as a kite one minute then down in the dumps the next. I’ve seen you in this delusional state before and it never turns out well. Please heed my advice for your own sake. You are only setting yourselves up for soul crushing disappointment. I am only here to help.
Happy Kwanza

Techman, Thanks for letting me buy tickets (with a nice contribution to the Tech Fund) with my meger salary. I’m just glad that I’ll still be able to travel to the out-of-town games when you fill all 55,000 seats at my beloved BDS @ Grant Field with Tech alum. Or will you try to stop that also? There is a difference in sidewalk and bandwagon fan. The GTAA needs both and doesn’t care where the money comes from. I, for one, will welcome anyone that shares my desire for the Georgia Institute of Technology. Everyone is entitled to their on opinion and I respect yours but I’m glad the powers that be on North Ave don’t share it with you. Merry Christmas to you and yours…

Alright guys look. Regardless of what you say:
My point remains valid. Tech tickets for Tech family first. This is more of a challenge to the Tech family than it is a smack at the sidewalk lot. I appreciate you buying jerseys and such, but I want the Tech family in the seats. It’s why I selected the Institute in the first place.
Some of the people that show up to the games are low class and smell awful. I have a lot of money and pay good money for my seats. Why should I have to sit next to Joe Schmo? Sidewalk fans are a different breed. They aren’t up to my level and they never will be. I even think we should impose a barcode tatoo that only Tech Grads and their family members have. Everyone should have to show that and get scanned to get in the Stadium. This would keep out all the “riff raff” (if you know what I mean). I pay good money for my seats. Why should I have to sit next to Ludacris and his buddies? I think I’ve made my very valid point clear. I only want Tech families in the seats. And if you are not I will give you my section number and I will fight you. I’m open minded..a bit of a snob..but if you’re with Tech you’re alright with me. If not GO TO HELL and don’t enter my stadium! On that note. Merry Christmas Everybody.

Obviously, Huh had been practicing his “schtick” in the mirror for a long time in an effort to “finally get it right”. Your parents were right when they told you to get off of the computer and so a little more studying. You have to bring those Ds and Fs up to Bs and Cs. If you’re lucky, Santa might even bring you that Red Rider BB gun so you can finally shoot your eye out.
Before you decide to try to use big words like delusional, bipolar, disappointed, fluke and most of all, FOOL, you need to know how to use them in the proper context. Those words describe you and your brethren to a T. Your attempt at excusing the utter bitterness that uGag fans are experiencing at the expense of GT success is very heartwarming.
During this Holiday Season, I’d like to show a little kindness towards my fellow man, woman, and/or child in Dawg-ville, but then I remember what I really think of of fans that follow a mascot known as a “nadlicker”.

So Gator… let me get this right… when it comes to football, Georgia is the worst, a bunch of trailer parks. But when it comes to putting dinner on your plate and a roof over your head, suddenly Georgia isn’t so bad.
Your explanation as to why Atlanta rocks is right on. Keep in mind that the same people that you hate built that city and made it what it is today. Otherwise, we’d all be in Jacksonville or Birmingham. But we aren’t. There’s a reason for that. But you won’t admit it.

“Huh?, Yes, and the pathetic dog fans acted like that two lose season last year was some real accomplishment. “
Tech fans would murder their first born child to have the kind of season Georgia had in 2007. We won a BCS bowl. Georgia Tech has never even played in one. We finished #2 in the land. Georgia Tech hasn’t finished in the top 10 since 1990. Hell, you’ve only finished ranked at all ONCE in the past 10 years.
This is the kind of stuff I’m talking about Tech fans. You are bumbling morons. You’re ready to induct Paul Johnson in to the Hall of Fame for a 9-3 season, but scoff at Georgia’s 11-2 2007 campaign. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. For people who claim to be so educated and thoughtful, Tech fans sure can say some dumb things.
Merry Christmas.

I don’t understand why so many uga fans come over to a GT blog. I’ve never been to the UGA blog space. Just shows how low life some of them are. And let’s see what’s better. Starting the season #1 and falling to 16 or starting unranked and finishing 14. Gee tough one. GT has all the momentum right now and cpj hasn’t even begun to get the players to fit his scheme. Wait until we get a passing attack. Wait til a run n shoot style offense happens next year. Wait til we get better pass blocking. This has an undefeated season and a bcs title game in the making. What will ga do next year with moreno and stafford gone? Add to that the same old defensive plan. It’s going to be like 98-00 all over again excpet this time we will be playing for championships while the mutts enjoy 8-4, 7-5 regular seasons.

OK Stabby, let me put this in English you can understand, UGA and the State of Georgia are 2 TOTALLY different things. I was born and raised here so why would I hate this state? I hate UGA Fans that are ignorant and stupid, not all are like this but most are. This MAY be a shock to you but not everyone who was born and raised here are Mutts fans. STOP THE PRESSES, yes Stabby not all are UGAG FANS. I know you can’t comphrehend being born and raised here and not loving UGA but it happens. My dad was born a raised here and is a Tech fan. Hope that makes more sense for you. Oh and all the people who “Built Atlanta” are not UGAG fans either.

Huh…some of us leave go to college and comeback after we graduate, not all of us go get a job at Wendy’s and continue to hit on the high school girls…let me guess Oh your motto is “I get older but they stay the same age.” Your food in the Apple’s dumpster is getting cold.

As Stabby please get me a list of all the people who “Built Atlanta” and we can poll them together. Something tells me they are not all from Georgia. I know you think these transplants are taking your job but if you have gotten an education and not dropped out of middle school then you could compete. And why are you on a TECH blog again? Let me guess to talk trash to the Tech people, well guess what… you got me, so now you are GATOR BAIT.

That’s great Gator. So you’ve clarified now that you really only hate ignorant and stupid Georgia fans. Do you also hate ignorant and stupid fans of other teams? Stupid and ignorant Florida fans? How about stupid and ignorant people in general? I tend not to like them, regardless of what sports team they follow. It’s just easier that way.
You can often recognize them by their jorts. It’s a give away.

Gator, I actually graduated from both the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. So I support both. Go into patent law and and you need the best of both. I’m a homer and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I support the Falcons, the Braves, the Hawks… any team that represents my home represents me and I’m proud of them.
I’m guessing you’re a Bucs fan. Yeah. And probably on that Devil Ray’s bandwagon too, huh? Florida’s waiting on you to go back home. There’s a cinder block house waiting on you. But I guess you’d miss your Mom. That’s a tough call.

Ok Stabby, Since I was born and raised here that would make my a Falcon’s fan, My dad and I have season tickets to Ga Tech FB and BB since my schedule makes it hard to go to Gainesville a lot. As for saying you like both Ga Tech and UGA I absolutely laugh at that. Everyone of my friends who got there undergrad and grad somewhere else always go for where that got there undergrad. Sorry but trying to have it both ways doesn’t work. oh as for the Devil rays I am not even sure they existed when I was there so that wold make me a Dale Murphy and Bob Horner good ole boy Braves Fan as well. As for my mom you are the one they never left the basement or the state. So yes Stabby the Mom complex is a burden you carry. And yes you just got served AGAIN. Tell you mom I said hello when you go upstairs.

You can’t be a lawyer my friend…any self respecting lawyer would look at all the angles before firing off insults. As for going to both schools LOL don’t bite on that one either but nice try. OK.. I tried to let Techman91’s comments slide, but the comment about GT fans that never attended the school being low class and smelling was just too far over the top, and reflects poorly on my university and the vast majority of alumni.
I have been a GT fan since I can remember. My father, who was a Ga. State grad took me to games in the 60s. He was neither low class or smelly!. However, he was and still is one of the greatest fans GT has ever seen. Because of him, I grew up wanting to be a yellow jacket. Fortunately,I was good science and math, and wanted to be an engineer, so I had the opportunity to make that dream happen.
However, as much as I love GT and GT football, I will never be as big a fan as my father. I think there’s a lot to be said for those fans that choose to be fans and support the team as opposed to those that are fans only because they attended the school.
I’ll take 10 good and loyal “sidewalk fans” any day over 100 alumni that support the team when we’re winning and it’s convenient.
Techman91.. Grow up and stop being such a snob.

It’s so nice to have you back on the blogs. Your endless humor was greatly missed after the 45-42 GT victory. I know you’ve been busy rubbing lotion on your Mom’s feet and cooking fries at McDonalds.

Gator, I’ve been to five of the seven continents on this planet and worked in Arusha, Tanzania for two years. I’ve been around a bit.
I love how you get yourself so worked up that you post something, then your little mind gets excited and you immediately post again. And then, as if you’ve suddenly found just the right come back, you post for a third time in a row. I love that. It makes me laugh.
By the way, was there a link to this blog from the Florida ADD site?
Are you really using the expression, you got served? That’s creative. Why don’t you just say pwned? That’s a tiny bit more current. But only a little bit.
The more I read your writing, the more I think you’re 14. And that makes me feel dumb for even having this discussion with you. I think I’m done.
Good day, sir.

It’s true I was there with Huh? was dropped on his head. Unfortunately I dropped my dead boy Yellowblood that day as well. It’s been terrible watching those boys grow up so delusional.
In fact, they both still think Vince Dooley is the best coach ever. The other day when I was giving them their bath, they kept complaining that Knoshow didn’t win the Heisman.
Just be kind to them as it’s difficult for their brains to keep up with the rest of us.

Happy Holidays to All….Including all UGAG fans.
Huh? Some things you need to know before posting on a blog……
1-Ugag fans stated that GT had a high school offence that would get shut down in the SEC….Wrong….2-0 and might soon be 3-0 vs the SEC. Does that make us SEC champs because we are the only school that is undefeated in the SEC with at least 3 games played? I remember a few years back when GT won the Coastal Division of the ACC several UGAG fans saying they were Coastal Champions because UGAG beat GT.
2- How many years of Top 15 recruiting classes has Ugag had since the “Great” Mark Richt took over at Ugag? Having better recruiting classes is supposed to equal better players…..RIGHT?
3- Last year there were lot’s of Ugag fans proclaiming that Ugag shoulda, coulda, woulda….so why can’t GT fans do the same…Thats right Ugag is the only school that can under-achieve and still have a right to boast about it…..ALWAYS NEXT YEAR!!!!!
4- Ugag has been competing for a NC for about 7 years now with a Preseason #1 ranking and cant beat a team with a pulse.
5- Who did Ugag play this year???? UF-loss, Alabama-loss, GT-loss, LSU-GT plays them in 1 week, Auburn and Tennessee-bad years that cost both teams thier coaches, South Carolina-they lost to a team that replaced thier coach and started winning after a dismantling to start thier season, Vandy and Kentucky C’mon give me a break, Arizona State-another preseason hype-rbole by the pollsters(remember that Auburn and UT were ranked early also).
6- All those years(7 to be exact) Ugag beat GT it was by 30 points each time RIGHT?…..WRONG!!!! 51-7 in Richts first year and by less than a TD for the next 5 and then by 14 last year. And if not for Reggie(Ugag’s best player) the streak might have ended sooner.
7- CPJ had players recruited for a Pro-style offence and install a completely different(NEW) system and made it work….all GT fans are saying is wait until he recruits players for his system and see what happens…I think a long losing streak for Ugag!!!!!
8- If a frog had wings he wouldn’t bump his arse…..If Tech did not lead the country in fumbles we would be playing for a NC this year…..If we would have fired Chan several years ago we would already have a NC…..If Reggie would have went to Auburn we would not have lost 7 in a row…..If Ugag fans had any common sense they would just STFU and admit they lost and under-achieved this season and offer congrats to GT.
9- And Ugag fans harass Florida fans when they win once in a blue moon then when reality bites back they don’t want to hear it but get an attitude when GT fans do the same thing that they do when the shoe is on the other foot.
10- If there is ONE Tech fan that does not believe, hope, pray, wish for another NC or think that it is posible for it to happen is not a real fan.
11- The record for streaks is 8!!!! And Tech owns it!
12- Tech won a NC in 1990 and Ugag won thier last NC in 1980!!!!! Now who is living in the past or hoping, dreaming, wishing or praying too much?…..That is even more HYPE than preseason rankings or the SEC being the most dominant conference. And please don’t ride the Gators coattails or the LSU bandwagon for NC the past few years…..You know you hate those schools.
For GT fans these are the 12 Truths of Christmas for Ugag fans……Hope you enjoy your holidays and WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR…..THWG……Go Jackets!!!!!!

Huh? As your name suggests…you’ll NEVER get it! I would like to echo GT Gators 12 days of Christmas, as he has stated my sentiments with clarity, tact and solid reasoning! GT Gators, you have been poetically dismissed! TechMan91, your thoughts on ‘sidewalk fans’ is tired. Let it go. I think I understand what you’re saying, but it’ll never happen. College football is big business and the bottom line is to fill every seat with paying customers, regardless their pedigree. A little Christmas Cheer for UGAG fans….
2000….Tech wins 27-15 over the Mutts!!!! 2001….UGAG wins 31-17….the streak starts. 2002….UGAG has a #3 recruiting class and wins 51-7. 2003….UGAG has a #6 recruiting class and wins 34-17. 2004….UGAG has a #6 recruiting class and wins 19-13 this is the Reggie Ball game. 2005….UGAG has a #10 recruiting class and wins 14-7. 2006….UGAG has a #4 recruiting class and wins 15-12. 2007….UGAG has a #9 recruiting class and wins 31-17 and Tech has a #18 recruiting class. 2008….Tech wins 45-42 over the Mutts who had a #7 recruiting class. 2009….UGAG currently has a #9 recruiting class and the future is only 11 months away.
Better recruiting classes equals better players which means that Tech should never beat the Mutts…..RIGHT?
Well we will just savor 45-42 THWG!!!!Go Jackets and lets stay undefeated in the SEC in 2008!!!!!

LSU, for all its lapses and losses this year, is good. The Chick-fil-A Bowl’s result will depend on how thoroughly Tech can prepare, after December exams, followed by the Christmas layoff. A second factor, just as important, will be the intensity with which they play on game night. “Intense” means LSU loses.
Paul Johnson is always intense, and that is powerful. But the players themselves will either believe in the importance of ten wins, for respect, and the future of the program, or they won’t. If the team lacks that belief, we’re whipped on New Year’s Eve.

Watching our team walk off the field with branches from the famed “Hedges” clinched between their teeth was awesome. The look of shock and dismay on the Georgia fans faces was priceless. Techman 91 / Techman 91 are both tools. I guess the coaching staff for GT needs to step back too as CPJ and CPH are not Tech grads. Also only Cooper Taylor’s dad can show up at the football games with your stupid opinions I If you believe the nonsense you spew you are an idiot. I believe most real Tech fans / grads would say - with fans like you who needs enemies.
Back to the blog - the best win was the Uga victory. When I knew it would be a special year is the look on Nesbitt’s face after losing to VPI.

Huh- you’re either a really old shut-in who has nothing to do or a really young punk who has nothing to do. Either way, you always make an @$$ of yourself and the team you claim to be a fan of. A few more seasons like this and you’ll fall off the bandwagon and have to find a University of Florida blog to hitch on to.
Let me put it this way…if UGA wasn’t preseason #1, they wouldn’t be ranked right now. They haven’t beaten anyone who ended up ranked, so why should they be ranked? The three ranked teams they played beat them, two of them in Athens. If you really are a fan of UGA, then you’d realize just how much shiit the mutts talk. If you had any class you’d shut your big mouth and take it like a man. But no, you’re a mutt…incapable of such things. You have to run your mouth until everyone sees you for what you are…

I’m not sure why people have to come onto this blog to belittle the accomplishments of Tech this season. Could it be that you are afraid the winning streak may be about to come to an end? You should be worried as UGa failed to live up to preseason expectations. They lost to a Tech team that was made up mostly of freshmen and sophmores. Yes, you should be worried as they will only get better and stronger next year. Why down play the win over FSU. They have been a power house in ACC football for years. The only thing I can concede is that they were also a young team. They will be stronger next season too. Miami was a great win. They are young and will be tougher as well. Can it be that these critics are just nervous about next season? I think so. I believe that Tech, FSU and Miami will be the top three teams in the ACC next season. UGa had a fluke win against UF last year only to get embarassed this year. You Dawg fans are not in much of a position to do a whole lot of crowing. Another thing, as I watched the FSU-Wisconsin game tonight I saw FSU punt out of bounds twice inside the 10 yard line. That is old style football but it works. We don’t see these modern coaches doing a lot of that. Also this triple option is old football as it has been around since Bear Bryant was at Kentucky but it works too. Still does! Just ask these folks that Tech whipped this season! Get ready Dawgs we are coming after you again next season in Atlanta! Come on to our house!
