Tech’s toughest opponents this season

Sorry for the delay. Computer issues.

Anyway, Tech is not practicing until Friday of this week, but Dean Buchan, the sports information director, was nice enough to bring in a few players to the office to talk to some other reporters and myself. Among them were Josh Nesbitt, Morgan Burnett and Dan Voss.

Before I forget, Voss said that he is having an MRI on his left shoulder on Thursday. He said it had popped out of the socket against Mississippi State and then subluxed (a partial dislocation) another time. But it hasn’t come out again, so he’s played with it. But after the MRI, he said he’ll decide (with the help of doctors and his parents) whether or not to have surgery or to let it heal naturally.

Anyway, the question came up to Burnett and Voss about the best players they’d faced this season, which I thought was interesting.

Voss said Boston College defensive tackles B.J. Raji and Ron Brace. If you don’t remember, they’re the two stout tackles (647 pounds combined officially and probably more than that). Raji was first-team all-ACC (along with Vance Walker) and Brace was second team (with Darryl Richard).

“Those two, because they’re such similar players,” he said. “I didn’t get a break going from one side to the other, as opposed to one of them was good, one of them wasn’t. They just wear you down.”

He also mentioned Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran, saying that he was athletic and hard to get to the ground with cut blocks.

Burnett mentioned a lot of players — Florida State wide receiver Greg Carr, Clemson running back James Davis, Virginia running back Cedric Peerman and three players from Georgia, quarterback Matthew Stafford, running back Knowshon Moreno and wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi.

I asked him to pick one or two, and naturally he said Josh Nesbitt and Jonathan Dwyer. Then I asked him to pick players he’d played on Saturday. He picked Stafford.

“He did some big things against us, throwing for 407 yards,” he said. “He was just clicking, making the right throws and the right reads, and then we just caught him on one play, we got good pressure from Brad Jefferson up the middle and I got the interception and was lucky enough to score. But he was making good reads and it was like he was throwing the ball right on the money, perfect timing.”

Interesting thoughts from both, I thought.

Personally, I’d say Cedric Peerman had the best game against Tech this season. He was hard to bring down and made a lot of big plays. I don’t think I can remember anyone hurting Georgia Tech like he did this season.

Who would you say was the best player Tech faced this season?

Cedric Pierman. He was THE difference in the Virginia game. Best stiff arm I have ever seen. Stocky, but extremely quick. Wore us down physically. Great player. Buckled Brad Jefferson when they met in the hole on one play. Sedric Griffith was the only player I saw knock him backwards.

The best player probably was Stafford. I hate to admit that though. Luckily he will be gone after this year. No way he comes back with the money he’d forfiet on the rookie cap that will be phased in for next year in the NFL.

Moreno was not very impressive. I still don’t get the hype around him. He wasn’t even the 2nd best running back during the game.

This topic is slightly interesting, but the real question is “what are you hearing on the CPJ contract talks?” It won’t matter who we are playing against without Coach Johnson.

I agree Peerman was tough. I was there for that game, and he was hard to tackle. But Stafford was a machine and MoMass caught everything in sight and had many yards after the catch. So, I would say that UGA combination was the most difficult offensive combination we played. I think Virg. Tech did the best job of stopping the option. Whatever they were doing with their defensive line was killing us in that game.

Anyway, back to the important stuff. CPJ is staying put, right? We can all relax, right?

Top 3, no particular order, Stafford, Peerman and that linebacker from N.Carolina (he was all over the place). I disagree with Ala. Rambinwreck, N. Carolina did the best job with the option. As I remember J.Nesbitt had a big game against Va.Tech, turnovers more than anything killed us in that game.

Peerman was the best runner we faced. Stafford’s accurate passes were the best air game we faced.

Who will be LSU’s best weapon? Don’t discount this team. They’re dangerous. They had a shot at going 9-3, same as we, except that they sagged at the end, losing their last two.

My vote goes to Cedric Peerman of Virginia. He refused to be tackled on key carries throughout the game, which turned the game in Virginia’s favor.

LSU seems to be sure they can stop Tech with three weeks to prepare. Should be an interesting game.

Agree with E, sorry Ala RamblinWreck, UNC did a terrific job of shutting down the option. Our 7 points came on a lucky break by Dwyer (of course), which was the lowest point total of the season. After that, of course, was our 10 against GW, but for other (more obvious) reasons. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that our opponents have been using a good bit of tape from UNC and what they did to shut us down. My guess is that they were just too stocky and not fast enough to overrun all these plays that we saw UM and UGA (and soon LSU) miss.

Sorry to go off-topic, but I wanted to congratulate the Jackets on a great season so far and a win over my beloved Dawgs. I think it is important that you hear it from a Dawg fan so you know that we all aren’t mean-spirited. I hope that you have continued success against all of your opponents except for my Dawgs, of course. :) Good luck against LSU!!!

I’m just glad that we will not have to play Peerman again. He is a great back that GT just can’t seem to get a good handle on.

Clemson’s backs are scary good also, but, we seemed to control them pretty well this year. Moreno had a good game, but we kept him in check also. No other great running backs come to mind.

I find the comment by Voss interesting that Curran was hard to get on the ground with cut blocks. I thought cut blocks were illegal. I did notice “several” in the Georgia game. But they were never called by the acc officials. CPJ is doing a great job teaching illegal blocking techniques.

E and THWG:

You guys are right about UNC stopping our option very well, but the reason I believe that V-Tech did better was the fact that we had a healthy Josh Nesbitt for that game. He was playing on 1/2 of a leg during the UNC game.

That is why I still believe that V-Tech did better. Also, we had more than 300 total yards against UNC, but less than 300 against V-Tech.

Ken: Now, how about CPJ? When will he and DRAD come out to let everyone know he is a Jacket for a LOOOONG time.

I’d have to give a nod to Rennie Curran, although Cedric Peerman is a strong contender. The two DTs for BC are also studs.

Peerman is not a bad back, but my grandma could run for that many yards if the refs allowed the offensive line to hold the way Virginia’s did that day. Stafford had the best game against us all year. Hell it was his career best day (407 yds, 5 TD’s). I want to know what UGA fans think they’re going to do against GT after this season. Likely no Stafford, likely no Moreno, definitely no Massaquoi. I smell a winning streak coming on.

murfdawg, quit whining about “cut blocks.” It’s perfectly legal to block below the waist UNLESS the defender is actively engaged with another blocker. Only real losers complain that the reason that they lost is because the other guys “cheated.”

Cut blocks are 100% legal. Chop blocks are not. The difference — cut blocks are one on one. Chop blocks are when 1 guy is blocking high and a 2nd person comes in low at the same time. EVERY team does legal cut blocks; just watch any pro-style offense where a RB tries to block a defender; they almost always cut block the bigger LBs and DEs.

Matthew Stafford and Mohamed Massaquoi would have killed the majority of the teams in the nation with what the did against us in Athens. Luckily the offense never let off the gas in the second half. Had they clicked like that all season, they’d be in the title game next month. But as far as a single person making it all happen, I’d agree with you and say Cedric Pierman. He ran all over us (as much as anyone has all season).

Murfdawg,

Unfortunately, your football IQ has come out on this comment. CHOP BLOCKS are illegal. That is different than a cut block. Every team in the country cut blocks at some point during a game. gtne80 explained it perfect. Next time figure out the rules before you start spouting off about things you don’t understand.

AL RW, relax! You have absolutely nothing to worry about. CPJ will be the coach at GT for years to come.

BTW murfdawg, cut blocking (blocking below the waist from the front) is perfectly legal. Only clipping (blocking below the waist from behind) and chop blocking (blocking below the waist while defender is engaged in block by a teammate) are illegal. You are right about one thing, though - CPJ is doing a great job!!

Why in the world would PJ go to Auburn? So that he can have every game, every play scrutinized by the meddling alum Louder? Not!! Besides, in the ACC PJ gets to go against a slightly weaker conf schedule w/ a better chance at winning conf titles and going undefeated. Plus, he will face 3 SEC teams every year as his non-conf games thx to DRad’s scheduling. Based on the ridiculous Turberville exit, it is obvious that the Auburn administration is miserable to work for. Just ask Tommy’s mother…

By Wrecker1

December 9, 2008 12:29 PM | Link to this

The 2 DT’s for BC are MEN and I thought BC did the best overall job of stifling our offense. Heck we played VPI a week later and it was like the difference between night and day in our offense. UNC did a good job when we got to about their 30 but even without Dwyer’s long run we still had 240 yards rushing. Cedric Peerman was tough. The first guy hardly ever got him down and plenty of times we had him for 3 yards losses that he turned into 3 yard gains. Ugag’s passing combo was unreal the day we played them but if they played like that every Saturday they’d be spliiting the Heisman this Saturday. One other kid that really stuck out was the MLB from Duke. It seems like the stats had him for 15 tackles (maybe less) but I swear he was in on 3/4 of the plays.

I think Stafford and MoMass had a career day against us. Not just numbers wise, but play wise. Our Line got tremendous pressure on him all day long, but his throws were quick, and right on the money where only his receivers could get to it (excepting the one to Burnett).

Peerman however absolutely bulldozed us. We could not stop him even if we knew he would get the ball, and would put 3-4 guys on him. His was a remarkable job.

Between the 2 I think I would go with Peerman, simply because we dont have as good a passing defense as we do a rushing defense, so for Peerman to do well is quite astounding. He also did not turn the ball over.

By Drop the Battle Axe

December 9, 2008 12:43 PM | Link to this

I agree with the Stafford comments, but what about Massaquoi? Sure, Stafford’s passes were on the money, but give Massaquoi credit for catching them and having a huge last game.

I could never say that if we had lost, but since we won (45-42 TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!!!) then I have to give Massaquoi some props for how he played. His statistics may be the most impressive of anyone we played all year.

Beyond he and Stafford, I would agree with Peerman. However, probably the best players we played against all season were lineman, not skill players. Guys like Brace, Raji, Eugene Monroe from UVA….those guys were probably among the best players we saw.

We are fortunate to be so well-coached finally, because Chan the Man would have lost that game 52-10. That running back from Virginia is a stud, he just kept getting stronger. About Johnson: it seems a pretty sure thing that he will be a much better — and more expensive — target with 2-3 years at Tech, and at least that many recruiting classes. Keep in mind that Auburn trashed the spread option in mid-season, literally, then fired the coach. And there must be, and will be, much better situations than on the “plains” of eastern Alabama. Come on. Auburn is not what Auburn was.

But reality is this: any sportswriter will tell you the one absolute in dealing with coaches: don’t believe anything they tell you. It’s something they learn in Chipmunks 101.

Yes, uga played well against our secondary - I was completely expecting them to. However, I was expecting them to because of our lack of depth and the fact that most of our starters back there (except for Burnett) were injured! Cooper Taylor made a big play in the fsu game, but it looked to me as if quarterbacks could throw all day on a few of our inexperienced, true freshman back there. Taylor ended up with so many tackles because QBs could complete passes on him! I think he will become very good, and I don’t mean to bash on him at all, but this is what I observed. (Without him, we would have been in a lot of trouble!) So I’m hesitant to give too much acclaim to uga’s receivers and QB. I’d be very interested to know how they would have performed had our starters been completely healthy. That, in my opinion, would really tell us something. I’d be interested to know any other thoughts on this.

There is absolutely nothing inferior about Knowshown Moreno. He would have easily gained another 40-50 yards on the ground against Georgia Tech if we hadn’t been playing catch up the entire second half. We had to throw the ball ALOT to keep up with your terrific offense. That’s the defenses fault, not his. How in the world people find ways to criticize this guy this year is beyond comprehension. He is having a better year than he did last year and could very well top 1,500 yards on the season in the bowl game. And people often forget that he is only a redshirt sophmore. You better hope he doesn’t come back for another year. I personally think there is a good chance that he could, but that’s just my opinion.

Good luck in your bowl game Tech. Be careful. I know they’re 7-5 but its still LSU and anything can happen in a bowl game, especially the Chick Fil A bowl. Expect the unexpected.

I think Knowshon is getting picked on as sort of a hangover from the inflated Heisman talk and all the comparisons to HW. We had to throw the ball ALOT to keep up with your terrific offense. That’s the defenses fault, not his.” when it was GT’s offensive players out-performing Morena and company that caused Georgia to have to “play from behind”.

I desperately want to see Tech move to a double-digits, 10-3 season! How satisfying.

But LSU will beat us again, just as they did in the Chick-fil-A in 2000, if (1)the four-weeks’ layoff takes us out of our timing, and we resume fumble-itis, or, (2)if we look back at the Miami and Georgia games, and figure we’ll just automatically dish up more of the same to LSU.

I gotta say Peerman (and VT ref). Peerman dominated us. When you dominate a defense that has at least 5 NFL players on it, you’ve done a heck of a job.

Of course, the VT ref single handedly beat us in one or two plays. Not bad either. I’m not complaining though, we won our share of close games this year and that doesn’t happen without a couple of calls going in your favor. It’s fun to think about not getting called for roughing the passer though, we’d be 11-2, heading to Miami…..

I would have been disappointed if CPJ had went to the CRAZY FARM just for the $$. I just don’t know why anyone would want to work for the good ol’ boys’ network with Louder and the rest at Auburn.

I don’t believe for a minute that Auburn is going to seriously try to hire Paul Johnson to bring the his option offense to the plains.

Although I suspect that he would do very well at Auburn or any other school, hiring Johnson is a little different than hiring most other coaches. He is going to run an offense that only one or two schools run. While that wasn’t really a huge issue at Tech considering that we had six years with absolutely zero offensive philosophy, embracing an entirely new offensive philosophy at Auburn would be a very BIG deal.

First, and foremost, it would be an admission on Auburn’s part that they can not compete with Nick Saban to recruit skill position players. Whether this is true or not, Auburn just won’t make this kind of move.

LOL@CPJ, let it go…YOU LOST!!! As for Tech’s greatest opponent?… Peerman was THE difference for virginia and the ONLY player that i saw ‘own’ us this season. However, our greatest opponent this year was OURSELVES!!! CPJ, given time, will alleviate THAT opponent! GO TECH!!!

Stafford and Moreno wouldn’t even start in Tech’s offense. We could use a guy like Peerman though. And the LB from UNC was the only guy who almost caught up to Dwyer from behind all year so I would say he was the toughest player we faced.

We were our biggest opponents. We were the creator of our own losses. Good news is that we have tons of returning talent. I’m excited of what CPJ has accomplished with Gailey’s recruit.

Random thought… Us and LSU are the two schools to wear white at home and on the road. What happens at the Peach Bowl? Do they bust out their purple, or do we have to figure something out to wear colors (either gold or perhaps navy… neither of which we have done this year)?

Wow, the BARN has some $$ GTAE.

Anyway, I hope DRAD is going to be able to reward CPJ’s loyalty and integrity. I know we cannot match that offer because we are still paying for a useless CHAN, but we need to do whatever we can. He should be paid near the top of ACC coaches, at least.

Go Jackets!!

As you can see, we are hypocritical. We bust on Georgia fans for saying the only reason they ever lose is because of their play, yet two of our fans have done the same exact thing. Amazing.

Also, our kickoff chant is awesome!! Goooo Jackets!! Sting ‘em. Bzzzz!! Very ferocious. We’re also cool because we sing the Budweiser song at the start of the fourth quarter for every game. That means we know how to drink!!! (Actually, this last part IS true. At one time Tech was rated the number 1 college in liquor consumption. Whetehr this means Tech students know how party or there are a bunch of alcoholics is anybody’s guess.)

A few thoughts here from a neutral observer. Relax, Tech fans. I don’t see Johnson going anywhere right now. First of all he is just getting started at Tech. If he is using the Tech job as a stepping stone, he is definitely smart enough to know that any offer he gets right now would pale in comparison to the offers he would receive later once he does great work for a few more years. Besides, do you really think he would go to Auburn? Seriously, the way they do things there, it is not necessarily the best environment to work. I am sure, if he does leave, there would be much better places to go.

Joe Montana wouldn’t start in your offense you moron.

And as far as who is going to wear which colors for the Peach Bowl, whoever is the home team gets to decide which colors they want to wear. Assuming that team will pick white, the other team will then have to wear one of their solid colors.

The Dude, hate to break it to you but your offensive players did not ours. Check the stats. Our offense scored more points than your offense and gained more yards. That’s called a FACT.

By the way, did it ever occur to you that Knowshown AND Tech’s players could be great players? Since when does this have to be mutually exclusive. My god Tech fans are the biggest bunch of brainless idiots I have ever seen.

I try to give Tech a little credit and some Tech crybaby can’t handle victory like a man. I try so hard to respect you clowns but you insist on making it difficult. Here’s to another Tech chokefest in a meaningless December bowl game. Tech fans deserve no better.

Knowshon Fan, Ease off pal. The Dude does not represent most Tech fans.
Furthermore, I hope Moreno comes back for next year. We want another shot at stopping him. But then again, you guys will probably be playing from behind, especially with Stafford gone. Here’s to the renewed rivalry!

I have to disagree about UNC being able to stop the triple option. The week before the game, GT lost their two starting offensive tackles. The team as a whole was pretty beaten up along with the QB. UNC was coming of a two week break. Add that two new players and walk-ons were involved with the offense and you can see why we played poorly. Down 7-0 late into the 3rd quarter, GT had two serious turnovers that led to UNC scores. Injuries are part of the game, but we have around 72 scholarship players or less and that counts for guys that are being red-shirted. Even UF and OK have bad days, but UNC did not impress me as a defensive giant.

I think the 36 pass completions by UVA and GT missing 2 safeties made the running much better than normal.

You didn’t stop him. 168 total yards is not stopping someone. 5.5 yards per carry is not stopping someone. In fact, one could even argue that’s called getting your a$$ beat. Knowshon was not as much of a factor in the 2nd half because of your offense, not your defense. What is so hard about this to understand?

Look, we lost fair and square. I don’t dispute that. In fact, I’ll even indulge you a little further and say that I didn’t expect to lose that game. It sucks. It ruined what otherwise would have been a somewhat respectable season, assuming a bowl win. Congratulations.

However, Tech fans love to pride themselves on being rational and evenhanded fans. I’m sorry but I just don’t see it. You are as delusional as they come. You act like you won by 30, not 3. You act like you’ve won 10 in a row, and not your first win in 7 years. You act like Georgia is all of the sudden Duke. Get over yourselves. Its is these delusions of grandeur that make you so miserable when things don’t go well. Tech fans are simply bipolar. That’s all there is to it. High as a kite one day and suicidal the next.

Defensively, BC was by far the toughest opponent. They were in our backfield every play and completely shutdown the dive. Without one mental mistake on a pitch to Dwyer, we lose that game.

Offensively, the UVA offensive line was unbelievable. They were opening up huge huge holes for Peerman and we couldn’t get pressure on their quarterback all day (which is even more impressive when you think about how good our D-Line was). I give their O-line the edge over Stafford/Green/Massaquoi because our secondary was not spectacular to begin with, but also riddled with injury.

Knowshon Fan,

You need to relax buddy. No reasonable tech fan would say that we stopped Moreno. Moreno’s great performance was just overshadowed by the career performances of Stafford/MoMass and the GT offense.

I’m guessing you’re responding to Arob’s comment above “Furthermore, I hope Moreno comes back for next year. We want another shot at stopping him”. He’s not saying we “stopped” him. He’s saying he’d like another shot to stop him. Reading comprehension anyone?

Also, we’d never compare Georgia to Duke. It would be an insult to Duke’s defense that held us to a measly 27 points.

December 9, 2008 9:55 AM Moreno was not very impressive. I still don’t get the hype around him. He wasn’t even the 2nd best running back during the game.

Now we know why you sit a cubicle all day blogging when you should be cranking out those CAD drawings instead of coaching or scouting football.

murfdawg, quit whining about “cut blocks.” It’s perfectly legal to block below the waist UNLESS the defender is actively engaged with another blocker. Only real losers complain that the reason that they lost is because the other guys “cheated.”

You ought to know. Tech fans wrote the book on never losing a game that wasn’t stolen from them.

I would have to agree that Peerman was the best on the day he played us, probalby the best game Va played.

I would have to take my hat off to UNC as a team also, they are always tough in Chapel Hill for us.

No argument that Stafford is an outstanding QB, anybody running a pro style offense would love to have him and he certainly had a great day against us..

BUT>>>>> Our toughest opponent was US, If we hold on to the football, we are in the Orange Bowl, maybe more.

What game were you watching? The guy was throwing out of a well all day long. And if there was no pressure there would have been an awful lot of double coverages the guy was shredding. He had a monster day. Learn something about football before you make a fool out of yourself again.

The UNC game was not a total blowout. The score did not represent how the game was as a whole. According to an interview with CPJ, the offense could of scored more than just 7 pts. He showed game film of the UNC game and pointed out offensive breakdown that could have led to scores. Not taking anything away from UNC, they scored because they are a good team. If Tech executed more on offense, this would have been a closer ballgame.
