Big week in hoops
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The preliminaries are over.
After going 4-0 against Winston-Salem State, Mercer, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Jacksonville, the Jackets step up in class to face Penn State at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. Saturday. Both games are at AMC.
Beating the 6-1 Nittany Lions would even Tech’s record at 5-5 in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge.
We’re going to find out a lot about the Jackets this week.
Gani Lawal and Alade Aminu have been dominant inside. Can they keep that up against bigger and better competition?
The Jackets are shooting 58 percent on free throws. Do they find their stroke, or does this cost the Jackets a close game?
Iman Shumpert, the freshman, has been solid and at times outstanding. He’s third in the ACC with 2.5 steals a game. Tech has needed him to play a lot of point guard because of Moe Miller’s concussion. Shumpert is playing major minutes because of how thin the backcourt is; he committed six turnovers against Jacksonville. (But also had five assists, four steals and 12 points.) How will he fare when the opposition gets tougher?
Based on what you’ve seen so far, what do you think we’ll learn this week?

58% free throws!!! When will Hewitt coach them? Get them to focus? This was one of the reasons I let my season tickets go this year. The $125 surcharge per seat ballooned two seats to nearly $1000 a year with a lean home schedule was also a reason. I’ll watch on tv.

When the going gets tough, I think we’ll find this to be another typical Paul Hewitt team - very talented and underachieving.
I sincerely hope they are able to prove me wrong.

Hopefully we’ll learn that they’ve learned to execute a few inbounds plays between the Jacksonville game and Penn State.
They struggle with that as much as any major college team I’ve ever seen, and that’s just basic “blocking and tackling”. It was a problem last year too.
How long before Miller is 100%? How bout an update on Peacock’s condition?

I feel sorry for the young men that come to Tech to play basketball AND get an education. When will Hewitt learn to COACH? Playing pick-up BBall won’t fly in the ACC with the likes of Coack K and Roy. Our young men deserve better. They are better. Rad, time to find a coach who can mold a team…….sorry Paul, you have to go.

This will be the beginning of the end for Hewitt. DRad has seen what happens when you bring in a good coach who can energize the fan base and win some games. Hewitt has lost this program and we can’t even count on beating bad UGA teams anymore. We have players who can’t keep their grades up and have had someone suspended two years in a row. People got mad at Chan for his but Hewitt gets a free pass because he had one good season five years ago. It is time to quit living in the past. If we can’t fire Hewitt this year because of his buy out he must be forced to hire some decent assistant coaches instead of the ones who can’t teach someone to bring the ball in bounds or to actually move on offense instead of waiting on the shot clock to run down to take a bad 3 point shot.

What happened to the giant picture that showed up every Tuesday on the homepage demanding us to “know our dogs”? Put it back up, I’d love to know our loser dogs and especially how they feel losing to Tech!! The AJC - what a joke.

Larry,
What is Zachary Peacock’s status? He had a concussion the last game. Will he play against Penn State?
Tech is an NIT team at best from what I have seen so far. But if Favors signs, we will have the #1 recruiting class for next year. That will keep Hewitt around until at least the end of next season. If we haven’t made the NCAA by then, DRad will make a move. His buyout won’t be that much by then. I hope he succeeds, but I’m not hopeful.

The commentors on here today are either Bulldog fans are just plain stupid. Hewitt has had a few mediocre seasons and probably will this year as well, but the reason is not his coaching ability it is the unexpected 1 and done of Crittendon and T. Young combined with the lost this year of Bell to injury, Clinch to grades, the Faye transfer and Rashad Dickey going to the overseas pro league. It has left him with no depth. He has 8 players on scholarship and 1 is Gary Cage a walkon, who was awarded a scholarship mostly because off his unselfish work on the scout team (A nice thing for PH to do). 2009 will be a much better season with the incoming top notch recruiting class of Rice, Holsey, Udofia, Oliver and a shot at at one of the top 3 uncommitted players in the country in South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors. So, either get informed or go back to your Bulldog blog!

Ccrider,
We’ve won 1 NCAA game since the final four year. Most of those years we didn’t have depth problems. There was nothing unexpected about T. Young being one and done. I understand about the circumstances this year, and think that will be taken into account. Hewitt has had some success, run a clean program, and represented the Institute very well on and off the court. But the fact is our program has slipped into mediocrity. I think he will (and should) be given this year and next year to get us back in the NCAA. If he can’t, that will be 4 NCAA appearances in 10 years, and 90% of the success in the first 6 years. I don’t think Radakovich will tolerate that. AMC is not sold out this year as in past years. I sincerely hope he gets it turns around because he is a great guy, but Radakovich has already shown he won’t tolerate mediocrity over the long run.

Don’t know how you guys feel but I would rather have all 3 star athletics, maybe a couple of 4 stars. But, all 4 & 5 stars means you have a lots of individuals. It is hard to get them to play as a team. An example, is our football team. We may have less talents than other teams, but we make up for it by playing hard and together as a team. Now if we had a lots of athletics like Georgia, well, you know what happen there.

Drad has proven to be a man of strength and conviction. If coach Hewitt didn’t has his backing, he’d be gone. He’s not and we are damn lucky.
Gary Williams is another class act who is having to deal with idiots in their “fan” (and I use that tern=m very loosely) base. To our coach’s credit he pretty much ignores ignorance. Go Jackets and go coach Hewitt!!

I AM NOT a UGA fan!!!! Tech has in the past, and should going forward, compete with the ACC elite……Coach K, Roy W, they all face the same unexpected events. I like CPH and he has represented us well off the court and on as a professional. Chan represented well, too but he is GONE. Tech can not accept excuses or mediocrity.

Jacketfan is a supporter of Hewitt because he has made it easy for him to get basketball tickets again. We are now having to sell ticket packages for the big games alonne to get people to come just like Uga does. People want to give Hewitt a free pass because some of his players left early for the NBA when Hewitt is the one who recruits the super stars to try and save his job. He counted on a couple of dummies who didn’t want to go to class or cheated to get by to come back this year. He got surprised when one went pro instead of staying in school and the other one flunked again. He has a good recruiting class coming in next year but in two years, you kool aid drinkers will be surprised when we have another bad season because two of them leave early and next year you will be saying that we are struggling because we have five freshman. Hewitt looks nice in his suits but one lucky season isn’t enough when we are getting left behind in the ACC. This is what he gets for counting on Aminu and Sampson to come here and not recruiting anyone else.

We should wait and see how this year goes. Tech competed last year and almost knocked off Kansas ( Nat’l Champs) and UNC. They were also competitive in league play with a freshman point guard. Give Miller and Shumpert a chance to get it going.

Paul Hewitt is a seemingly good man and it appears that players like to play for him. He is absolutely a top notch recruiter as well. However, it just seems to clear to me by now that he is simply not a good X’s and O’s coach. Three examples as to why. 1) Is there a team in the country that gets less coming out of a timeout than GT? That’s coaching. 2) Why do GT teams under Hewitt consistently play poor perimeter defense? That’s coaching. 3) Have you noticed that players coming in a freshmen do not appear to be significantly improved in the 3rd of fourth yrs? That’s coaching. I’ve enjoyed the top recruits, the Final Four and some nice wins but it is time to move on and find someone who can “Coach em Up” (i.e. Paul Johnson)

Coach Hewitt has good PR and is popular with the students, but his teams continue to underachieve. Good players don’t stay for more than 2 years, average players don’t improve during the 4 years they’ve been here, and why haven’t we had even ONE highly recruited white player in all the years he’s run the program? Maybe it is all coincidence, but we don’t settle for mediocrity in other sports, why do we accept it in BB? Cremins was popular, too, but we let him know it wasn’t good enough to just recruit well.
