Can Nesbitt take the next step?

You’ve heard every coach say it: Turnovers are the key.

It’s especially true with this Georgia Tech team. The Jackets are good enough to beat almost anyone if they hold onto the ball. But they don’t have a lot of margin for error.

In Tech’s three losses (20-17 at Virginia Tech, 24-17 to Virginia, 28-7 at North Carolina), the Jackets forced three turnovers while committing nine.

In Tech’s eight wins, the Jackets are plus-10. They forced 24 turnovers while committing 14.

For the season, Tech is plus-4 (27-23). Georgia is minus-1 (14-15).

Georgia was plus-2 in last year’s 31-17 win over Tech.

It’s hard to see Tech winning Saturday if the Jackets don’t win the turnover battle.

So it probably comes down to Josh Nesbitt. On the plus side, Nesbitt is healthier than he has been in a few weeks. He made great reads against Miami and once again showed his toughness by executing the offense on a sprained ankle. And playing on the road hasn’t fazed him.

On the other hand, Nesbitt has yet to put two good games together.

The first-year starter has battled three separate injuries. Here’s what CPJ had to say about Nesbitt’s season:

“Every time that Josh really seemed to be making strides, something crazy would happen and he’s had some really strange injuries, or injuries you wouldn’t think. The very first one against Mississippi State, he’s running down the sideline with the ball and tweaks a hamstring.

“He comes back and plays pretty good, then he steps on somebody’s foot and rolls an ankle. Then the third play of the Carolina game, he stepped on another foot and rolled the other ankle.

“Mentally, he’s fought through it. And I think he’s got a better understanding of playing the quarterback position than he did when he started, but it’s still a work in progress. Hopefully he’ll continue to get better. He’s played, I think, six games as a quarterback? (7 1/2 actually). So I think the more he plays, the better he’s going to get.”

The question is, can Nesbitt perform Saturday like he did against Miami?

Nesbitt doesn’t have to have a spectacular game for Tech to win, he just needs to play very solidly and not turn the ball over. Dwyer, Roddy Jones, Lucas Cox, Demaryous Thomas, are all great weapons on this team along with Josh Nesbitt. Just keep the ball in these guys hands and we’ll do fine.

The bigger challenge in my mind is the job our D line MUST do to keep Stafford from carving up our inexperienced secondary. We just can’t let Stafford get comfortable in the pocket.

The Jackets are not good enough to beat almost anyone, by holding on to the ball.

Just not true. They are an OK team, and the Dawgs are too.

The top ten teams in the country would beat em both, most days by a couple touchdowns.

Dawgs have more playmakers, but not a great team. Toss-up.

Dawg fan here.

I’m very worried about this game for the Dawgs. This is Tech’s game of the year while Georgia does not view this game the same. And this is not a year to overlook Tech.

Dawgs have looked terrible against the option.

Very worried….if there is a slip-up game this year for Georgia, I’ve been saying all year this is the week.

This game should re-store the rivalry back to where it used to be.

Can’t wait to watch.

GO JACKETS! RAMBLE ON! If we limit the turnover’s and can contain AJ Green and Massaqaui, which won’t be easy without pressure on Stafford, GT wins. If not, it could be a long day. I think we can sustain the run and chew the clock and put the ball in the endzone, which keeps Stafford and their offense on the sideline. However, if we turn the ball over, or it’s a close game at the end, I am worried about UGA’s offense beating us in the last minute. All I can say is: “TO HELL WITH GEORGIA” GO JACKETS! RAMBLE ON!

Hey UGA: Do you think it was smart for Knowshon Moreno to say he does’t know who Jonathon Dwyer is? Dwyer is only a couple of hundred yards from Knowshon’s rush total and Dwyer sat out the 2nd half of the Miami game. Both are different backs, but for him to say that is ammunition for the Jackets. I think he will know who Dwyer is soon enough and will be asking himself why he made that comment. GO JACKETS! “TO HELL WITH GEORGIA”

I think when Knowshon is asked a question that he should tell the truth, and that is exactly what he did. I doubt he has time to follow Georgia Tech football. I doubt Knowshon even reads what is written about himself, let alone some other running back on another team. Although he has never explicitly said this, most make the very safe assumption that Knowshon does not pay much attention to the media. And any film he has been watching over the past two weeks would be of Tech’s defense, not its offense. I hope this makes you feel better Techie. Nobody tried to diss anybody. Settle down.

At 11:01 you make a somewhat sensible post, but then at 11:12, you come back with that ridiculous post about Knowshon not knowing who Dwyer is?? That was disappointing.

Nobody knew who Dwyer was prior to this year, except GT fans, the UGA coaches who tried to recruit him and the UGA fans that follow recruiting. Dwyer has had a great year and looked very impressive in the game against Miami. Knowshon has had his moments where he looked unstoppable and others where he looked as average as grits. I would side with Oh Brother… in that Knowshon has been watching film of the Tech defense not their offense.

I am looking forward to watching the game, regardless of the outcome, but please try to be consistent with your posts. It’s quite confusing. Did Reuben Houston visit you at 11:05 or something?

I can’t recall them all but it seems to me that whenever Tech lost to UGA it was because Tech’s quarterback was outplayed. Could someone write a blog comparing the quarterback play for Tech’s 8 game winning streak and another for UGA’s 7 games. I’m not convinced that Matt Stafford has yet fulfilled his potential by consistent play but I hope, as a Jacket fan, that he plays one of his worst games and Nesbitt one of his best.

The AJC reports another bulldawg arrested last night; the back-up center. That’s makes 11 football players since January, accoring the AJC. So shut up with the arrested players non-sense.

Tech has a better defensive front that UGAg’s frontline on offense. Knowshon has more yards because he has had more carries than Dwyer. We also use a lot more players to run the ball, so the yardage is divided up. Tech should be able to run on UGAg. Miami was only giving up 70 yards a game and Tech stung them with close to 500!

I hope they wear black in Athens, since this will be the end of an era and the start of a new one (for the Jackets). The only thing that can stop Tech is Tech. If we don’t turn the ball over, we can and will beat the dawgs.

There are a few factors in the game.

1) Penalties: Georgia is 119th in fewest penalties, while Georgia Tech is 24th. Advantage: Tech

2) Weather: Rain will slip up the triple option a bit and mess up a few routes; weather will probably cause more turnovers on both the red and gold sides. Advantage: Georgia

3) Running: Moreno and Dwyer are the highest-regarded backs in their conferences, and because of that, both will be targeted by the opposing defense. Tech’s advantage? They’ve also got Jones, Cox, Nesbitt when he runs… Advantage: Tech

4) Passing: It’s pretty much Green against Thomas. Here is Georgia’s advantage; Stafford has a good connection with Green. Advantage: Georgia

Overall: I think Tech has an advantage in this matchup, but calling a close game. Tech 35, Georgia 31

Techs defc. front is the key to the game.Stop KM, AND pressure Matt -Jackets can win.

Dwyer is a nice back, but a lotta variables involved in any comparison-not just number of carries. Moreno is starting to get on my nerves-showboating, taking himself out of the game-but the two backs are not equal. Not really that close.

That said, really good D can stop Moreno-mainly cause he has a weak-so-so line.

I expect Tech to do just that.Hope the dogs can win by air mail.

Two guarantees here:

1) I don’t think Tech will win this game (of course I’ve given up on picking Tech to win this game until they actually show they can win it again)

2) I won’t watch one second of it. This game has brought out the absolute worst in college football fans all across Georgia and I won’t take part in that behavior. 2005 was the last time I watched any of it and until both fanbses clean up their acts and act civil towards one another (especially Georgia fans). Really no reason to believe that GT will win. UGA has all of the 5-star recruits. They have a 90000-seat stadium with 85000 woofing fans. They are in the mighty SEC. They have Stafford, Moreno, and AJ. How can GT compete with that?

Oh yeah, we have Paul Johnson. That makes it almost fair!

I’m not saying we win this year, but I am saying if we don’t, it will be the last one UGA wins for some time, as long as we have CPJ coaching against Mark Richt.

Moreno can be stopped. He did zero damage to Tech last year. Thomas Brown was the back that hurt us. I love the excitement of the game and the lead-up to it, but the sun will rise on Sunday. I was all into the game two years ago when during the game, I got a call that my nephew had been killed in a car wreck. You know, suddenly, that game didn’t amount to anything. I want the Jackets to win very badly, but my year won’t hinge on it. I love the game for it’s hard-fought, competitiveness. You, sir, are delusional. It is one thing to support your team, but to post this laughable dribble is flat out asinine. I’m not saying UGA is a great team this year by any means. But Tech is not that good. Once you figure out how to beat teams from Virginia and North Carolina, then you can apply to join the SEC. The keys are to limit turnovers on GT’s side and get to Stafford and Moreno. If GT’s D can hold UGAy’s offense, they will put themselves into a good position to win. I know GT will be able to run the ball against the mutts. Georgia couldn’t stop Kentucky’s option play. No need to think they’ll stop GT’s either. Either way this game will be much better than everyone thought it would be at the beginning of the year. I like GT’s chances this year more than any. Georgia is playing sloppy and undisciplined. And GT is playing with more emotion and heart. Go Jackets! What’s the Good Word? To HELL With Georgia! How bout them dogs? P** on ‘em!!

Jerrard Tarrant, who was going to be Georgia Tech’s Starting Cornerback for Paul Johnson this year, is out on a $40,000 Bail for Rape. I see another arrest is made of a Bulldog Football player. In half of the arrests of UGA Football players after the end of last season through this Thanksgiving Day Weekend, the charges against them have been dropped. The arrests do not include any Rape Charges.

Georgia Tech in 1998 ended up Number 9 in the Final AP Poll and UGA Number 14. In 2000, Georgia Tech ended up Number 17 and UGA Number 20. Georgia changed it’s coach over it.

Tech went on NCAA Major Infractions Database Football Probation for George O’Leary Academic Cheating playing as his best 11 Football Players, players who not a 1 would have been eligible to play anywhere in America and Lost 6 Football Scholarships for the Duration of the Chandler Gailey Era at Tech.

Since 1997 UGA has been ranked in the Final AP Polls.

Since 2002, Tech has not been ranked any year in the Final AP Polls.

Starting in Coach Richt’s 1st year, 2001, Tech has not been ranked ahead of UGA in any Final AP Poll and only 1 of these past 7 years has Tech been ranked at all. That was 2001 when Tech ended up Number 24 and UGA Number 22.

In the down ACC this year, Tech seems destined to play a far better football team than they are in their bowl game because the ACC just doesn’t have any top-ranked team or teams at all while The SEC finds that Alabama is Number 1 in the AP Poll, Florida is Number 2 in the AP Poll, UGA is Number 13 in the AP Poll and Ole Miss is moving way up from Number 25 prior to their 45 to Nothing thrashing of their opponent this Holiday Weekend in the Egg Bowl.

South Carolina seems poised to rejoin the rankings as well.

Meanwhile, every week for the last 6 Consecutive Weeks every ranked ACC team who played a game, Lost and dropped out of the rankings.

Will Georgia Tech be ranked in the Final AP Poll for the 1st time in 7 years ?

Will Georgia Tech be ranked ahead of UGA in the Final AP Poll for the 1st time in 8 years ?

When is the Court Case for Jerrard Tarrant charged with Rape as Georgia Tech’s Starting Cornerback for Paul Johnson this year ?

Will the Loss of Jerrard Tarrant, out of Jail charged with Rape on $40,000 Bail, cost Tech its ranking, cost Tech its game and be shoved under the rug like it never happened as everything is at Georgia Tech ?

The way to keep 11 kids from being arrested this up-coming season again, is to state them NOW that if you are arrested, you Lose your Scholarship at UGA until such time as you are found Not Guilty.

The other part of it in the off-season is the 18 kids injured in Camp and since, lost for the entire season this season.

It leaves our team scrambling for a set line-up, and there is no doubt that there is a correlation between the number of players lost to injury and to suspension, and our woes in being penalized, when every day for the entire year starting since the end of last season, either one of the 11 were arrested or 1 of the 18 were injured and lost for the season. We stay in the bad press.

These are recurring themes that have left us finishing in the Coach Richt Era in the Final AP Poll :

Number 22 in 2001 Final AP Poll.

Number 3 in 2002 Final AP Poll.

Number 7 in the 2003 Final AP Poll.

Number 7 in the 2004 Final AP Poll.

Number 10 in the 2005 Final AP Poll.

Number 23 in the 2006 Final AP Poll.

Number 2 in the 2007 Final AP Poll.

Number 13 in the 2008 AP Poll before this morning’s game against Number 18 Georgia Tech.

There is little comfort to UGA fans that Tech has NOT finished ahead of UGA in the Coach Richt Era in the Final AP Polls starting 2001.

There is little comfort to UGA fans that UGA is therefore 2nd in the nation in penalties.

And, 1st in the papers for bad press.

It disrupts the entire team.

And, if you play for UGA and are arrested - You MUST LOSE YOUR SCHOLARSHIP to UGA until such time as the charges are dropped or you are found not guilty.

If we end up as Number 13 this season in the Final AP Poll, as we are today, this gives Coach Richt a double-digit average finish in the Final AP Polls.

10.88

Number 11 in the nation therefore average ranking for Coach Richt’s entire 8-season record.

I presume you know that Number 11 is NOT that good ?

1 poster here the other day mentioned that Florida is Not Ranked 1 year and National Champions the next. Which would you prefer, he questioned.

Frankly, there is no comfort from being ranked consistently Number 11 in the Nation.
