ACC dominoes are falling

Are you guys (and gals) watching what’s going on? Georgia Tech’s ACC title hopes are getting better by the minute.

North Carolina gets killed at home by N.C. State, 41-10. Virginia loses at home to Clemson, 13-3.

So UNC and UVA are out of it in the Coastal Division. Miami also was eliminated today.

Virginia Tech plays a bit later on, hosting Duke. For the sake of argument, let’s assume a Hokies win. (They’re 17-point favorites).

That puts Virginia Tech and Miami at 4-3, behind Georgia Tech’s 5-3.

The Jackets simply need Virginia to beat Virginia Tech in Blacksburg next week, and they’ll be division champions.

The Jackets cannot win a two-way tie with the Hokies (because of the 20-17 loss on Sept. 13) or a three-way tie. Here’s why: If Miami wins at N.C. State and Va. Tech beats Virginia, everyone would have a 1-1 record against the other two.

The next tiebreaker is division record. Georgia Tech finished 2-3 in the Coastal, Miami 3-2 and Va. Tech would be 4-1.

So the Hokies would get the nod.

Obviously, Virginia Tech will be favored at home against UVA. But as everyone has pointed out repeatedly about this year’s ACC, it’s not exactly predictable.

If ACC pattern of 2008 holds, expect UVA to pull it out next week. Regardless, Tech tieing for or winning Coastal in first year under CPJ is pleasant surprise. The boys will be hungry for more success at UGA, possible ACC title game, bowl game, and 2009. Hats of to AD Dan for making what looks like a great coaching hire. Never thought we’d hear the UGA fans worried about Tech again so fast.

The way things have gone this year, NO ACC team should be favored to win 2 in-conference games in a row…it’s unbelievable, but the Jackets are better than even money (IMHO, of course) to be playing for the ACC Championship in Tampa

Latest injury news isn’t good:

LB Sedric Griffin and S Dominique Reese probably won’t play vs. UGA. Both suffered left knee injuries in the first half against Miami.

Expect to see a lot of Shane Bowen for Griffin, and Tony Clark playing a hybrid safety/linebacker. Both played well vs. Miami. And, of course, Cooper Taylor starts.

CPJ said he hopes DT Vance Walker and CB Jahi Word-Daniels will be back but won’t know for sure until next week.

Jonathan Dwyer (bruised knee) did not practice but hopes to be back Monday. There is no practice Sunday.

This is really awesome. The ACC is wacky. For our sake, I had just as soon not be ranked for the UGA game. Being ranked in the ACC is an automatic loss, or it sure seems so.

Way to be a Debbie Downer Larry, my day was going so well…

Hopefully we get at least Jahi and Vance back, we seemed ok with Sed and Reese out but I don’t see how we can stop UGA’s O without Jahi and Vance in there. I don’t think we’ll have an answer for AJ Green without JWD.

Larry:

Not sure I understand knee injuries too well, but they are usually very serious or not very serious. How can they only hold them out for one game? Are the knees sprained?

Is there still real doubt on Jahi? He was almost ready for the Miami game. Wouldn’t he for sure be ready with another whole 9 days?

GTFan09 — Sorry to dampen the mood…

AlabamaRamblinwreck — All CPJ said about Griffin and Reese is that the injuries are “serious enough” that they probably won’t be ready for the game.

My guess is Jahi and Vance will be back but that the coach was being cautious. I should point out I’ve been wrong before on whether players will make it back….

Rashaad Reid had a great game the other night (INT, 2 pass breakups, 6 tackles) in place of Jahi, and so did Elris Anyaibe (5 tackles, 1 sack) playing for Vance. Not saying Tech doesn’t need the starters back, just saying those guys did the job.

I really like Tech’s chances for ACC Championship. I think Duke could very well give the hokies fits today. I also think UVa will be playing with a chip on their shoulder next week.

Things are looking better than they did. If VPI gets past Duke tonight, let’s hope they fall to UVA.

GREAT DAY FOR THE JACKETS!!

Now we just need VTech to lose one of its 2 last games. Can Duke do it? Right now, VT ball on their own 3 yd. line, 2nd & 11, score 0-0. A good start early in 1st Qtr. Too bad both the Hokies games are at home.

I’m pulling for the Terps to win the Atlantic Division since I still love Ralph Friedgen, an offensive genius responsible for much of Tech’s National Championships and Tech’s success during the Joe Hamilton and Godsey eras. I wrote him after he left Tech before the Peach Bowl game against LSU. I blamed him for the loss and said “I hope your conscience hurts you!” He wrote me back, and said “I love Georgia Tech. I offered to stay and help prepare for the bowl game, but O’Leary told me to leave.” I lost a lot of respect for O’Leary’s intelligence and as a person after that even before the fisaco at Notre Dame. Tech didn’t do nearly as well after Ralph left. I’m pulling for him to beat the Free Shoes University Criminoles tonight. Go Terps!

I’ve been watching the Miami game again on DVD, and this offense reminds me so much of Bobby Dodd’s legendary belly play. I keep having to replay because I’m looking at the wrong back who doesn’t have the ball just as the Miami defenders were doing. On one play, there is a pile of Cane defenders on top of Dwyer while Nesbitt keeps it and breaks open for his long gain. The great blocking and the speed and energy of the Jackets also reminds of Dodd’s great teams. Watching Slo-Mo of Dwyers’ 6 yd run for a TD, I didn’t realize the critical part Roddy Jones played the first 2 times I watched it. He swung behind Dwyer from his A-back position, cut sharply into the line to the right of Dwyer, GOT TO LINE BEFORE DWYER DID, blocked the defender, Dwyer bounced off Jones, headed for the goal, was hit by another defender, then Jones followed and pushed Dwyer over the goal for the TD! It was beautiful to watch. And Jones is only a freshman!

Is anybody else out there seeing this? VT turns the ball over 3 times in its first 3 drives, giving Duke a 3 point lead. If you’ll recall from a few hours ago, 4 Cavalier turnovers proved to be the story of why Clemson won. Simultaneously, UNC fumbled 3 and threw 3 interceptions to give NC State the convincing victory. And… VT just fumbled again, giving them 4 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Hey, just for the record or just in case no one has noticed, but the ACC Football Conference has a chance to finish the season with no one having a losing record. Virginia (5-6), NC State (5-6)and Duke (4-6)all need to win. Duke of course has the toughest challenge. They’re sitting at 4-6 with VaTech and UNC to play.

It will also help us to feel less jilted that we have a black muslim lying president elect, Jerimiah Wright loving, Louis Farrakan supporting, Tony Larousa criminal friend ship, and terroistic association with Acorn, who plotted to set off pipe bombs at Fort Dix, Kentucky; who will be in the White House next year. Let’s see

ACC – 12 teams, 8 teams bowl eligible, 1 team cannot become bowl eligible and 3 TBD. Championship game representation yet to be determined due to parity in the conference. Excitement remaining for several teams in the conference.

SEC – 12 teams 8 teams bowl eligible, 3 teams that cannot become bowl eligible and 1 TBD. Championship game representation determined weeks ago because there are only two good teams in the conference, one from each division. Boring conference due to domination by 2 teams. Team from conference that was preseason #1 pick not even in the top ten. Team that won NC last year won’t even be in the top 25 tomorrow when the rankings are posted. Something smells here!! Unfortunately, VT will not lose to UVA. We, GT, had many opportunities this year to control our own fate and did not prevail. We played great Thursday but have not been consistent throughout the year. One Good game (Clemson) followed by one bad game(Virginia), followed by one good game (FSU), followed by one bad game (UNC) folowed by one good game (UM). So we had a good game Thurs. Does that mean the UGA game will be a bad game? Let’s hope our trend is broken but with more injuries - not sure. Who is our conditioning coach and whatever he is doing in the off-season is not working. More injuries this year then I can remember in a long, long time. Time to try something new next off-season or step aside and let someone els have a chance.

John, while I see where you’re coming from, I would suggest not jumping to the immediate conclusion that VPI will beat UVA. After all, this is the ACC, where a team picked to win by 17 falls by 31 at home, and where a team turns the ball over 5 times in the first half and still manages a slight victory, albeit over a school that had an astounding 136 total yards, including a whopping 20 yards in the air. GT throws the ball in the neighborhood of 10 times a game, yet still manages over 100 yards passing. I guess we will just have to anxiously await next Saturday.

Georgia is in luck. The rest of college football is so mediocre outside of about 10 teams that LSU appears incapable of dropping out of the Top 25. Why is that important for the Dogs?/ Because it appears LSU will be the only Top 25(Yuk!!) team they defeat this year. Tough schedule my coccyx—Examine that “brutal” schedule-Georgia Southern, Central Michigan, South Carolina, Arizona State, Tennessee, Vandy, Kentucky, Auburn and I’ve saved the RANKED(as in “rank”) team they have defeated for last—Those fighting Bengal Tigers. Let’s sum it up, they beat 8 “dogs” and one Top 25(ROTFLMAO) team. They also play 2 Top 5 teams that humiliate and dismember them. Real impressive.

All we need is UVA to take out VT next weekend. Who would have imagined we would be this close to the ACCCG at the beginning of the season? I’m not too surprised NC State and Clemson won today but thank goodness. I really think UVA has a more than decent shot to upset VT in order to secure a bowl bid.

And who would have thought we would be 8-3 going into the UGA game? Incredible! We are coming off our most complete game of the season while UGA has done nothing but underachieve this season by playing sloppy and undisciplined. I’d much rather exceed expectations than to fail them. Exactly who have they played this season? Like some people have already said, if GT plays like they did against Miami, they could sneak out a win. Georgia should be very worried. I like our chances against the mutts moreso than I ever expected but I’m going to be realistic as well. I know UGA is a good team and I expect them to be ready. Hope for the best and expect the worst. To Hell With Georgia!!! Go Jackets!

Hey ACC Stinks, You keep referencing AACs poor showing in the polls. The opinion polls are simply BS. Vandy was ranked as high as 13th this year. They were beat by DUKE. The team emerging as your 3rd best team, Ole Miss, lost to Wake who is bottom half of the ACC. Show me who in the SEC beat Miss St better than GT did. jacketnation Keep the politics off the FOOTBALL BLOG. I know it is fun to poke fun at REDNECK non-grad/attende UGA fans, but many are good people and make more money than you do. KEEP it football, non-politiacl, and non-racial. We know UGA is the FAKE BLONDE BARBIE U and many fans don’t care for black people except the ones playing a sport at UGA, but this is about the FOOTBALL.

“ACC Stinks” scribbled Of course tech has a chance….the entire league sucks….no one wants to win the league title…what a joke a 3 league loss team will play for the league championship possibly against another 3 league loss team. Probably all those “pretty good teams” beating up on each other. LMAO!! Just send all your teams to those “pretty good bowls” and save your league some face by not losing another BCS game. Utah would beat down your league “chumpion”.

Here are some facts for you and all the other trash-talking, obscene barking dawgs:

The ACC leads the SEC in overall rankings, top to bottom. The NFL drafted more players from the ACC over the past 3 years than any other conference, including the top 3, Matt Ryan, Calvin Johnson, and Mario West. The ACC leads the nation in graduation rates. The SEC is last. The ACC is 3-3 against the SEC this year. Finally, Tech has a more illustrious gallery of coaches than Georgia: John Heisman, Wm. Alexander, Bobby Dodd, Bobby Ross, and probably Paul Johnson.

GT, FSU, UNC, Miami, Clemson, VT, MD, UVA, WF, & BC were all ranked at some time during the season. The ACC has no powerhouse this year, but top to bottom, all are very good teams.

GEORGIA TECH WON 6 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: 1990, 1956, 1952, 1951, 1928, and 1917. GEORGIA WON 5: 1980, 1968, 1946, 1942, and 1927. THE ONLY CONSENSUS NC WAS TECH, 1917. TWO OF THE DAWGS NC’S, 1968 & 1946, WERE NAMED BY ONLY ONE SOURCE OUT OF ~13. ALL OF TECH’S WERE MORE THAN ONE.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAADivisionI-Anationalfootball_championship

Similar obscene trash talk from several other bad dawgs on these blogs is a disgrace to the many classy UGA alumni I know.

Typically you trash-talkers don’t counter any intelligent analysis with any accurate facts or insightful opinion except to spew obscene, disgusting trash talk. I know you are upset because of the underachieving dawgs whose A*ES have been chomped by Gators and whipped to shreds by Bama until they are Red, Black, and Blue. I know you feel inferior to Tech’s players and students who are so much smarter than dawgs and the fact that most of you probably don’t even have a college degree or maybe not even a high school diploma.

To paraphrase a previous dawg, while Richt has been at UGA we have seen the dawgs leading the nation in criminal arrests, rapes in the student dorms, teachers attacked, and one of the lowest graduation rates in the nation. We’ve seen college course exam questions for your basketball players such as: “How much is a 3 point goal worth? How many halves in a game?” Hershel Walker was quoted in Sports Illustrated as saying “I don’t want to leave Georgia early for the NFL because I haven’t finished coloring all my books yet!”

BTW, our two fight songs are so much better than your unimaginative excuse for one. I never heard the ESPN announcers raving about your copying the Battle Hymn of the Republic because no one at UGAG could write an original song!

So, you still want to talk trash?

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Hey StingDoc: very well said my friend!!! The Dawgs are always talking trash and are always overated and under achievers. That’s why their graduation rate is 17%, yep, that’s it 17%. What a joke. One would think with a graduation rate of 17%, they could field a good football team with all the convicts, rednecks and drug addicts, but that’s not the case. I cannot wait to see 90,000 rednecks in the stands crying after the JACKETS beat em, then another 100,000 rednecks watching from their double wides and trailers and listening to the game while delivering pizza. That’s a total of 190,000 rednecks and a total of 40,000 teeth between them all. LMFAO! RAMBLE ON! GO JACKETS! “THWG”

Wow this blog is getting out of hand quickly! As much as I want to start trash talking the Dawgs, I know that we still have to win the game! Our team is still beat up, but the thing that Georgia Tech has this year is a passion and emotion during the games that no other team can match us right now. We might not have the talent or recruits of UGA, but we are gonna’ find a way to win and shock the Dawg nation!

Go Tech! THWG!

One of 2 things are at work here:Either 1)Jacketnation is a bulldawg in disguise trying to stir up trouble by saying offensive things and making the Jackets look bad, or 2) he really may be an ignorant, bottom feeding racist. In either case, he is unwelcome on Jackets blogs, and not welcome as a Jacket fan. Please do not come here, or to any GT games in the future.

Like i said earlier, Sooners will kill Red Raiders. Happened.

ACC champ. game will be between two teams that are not even ranked. That in itself shows how bad the conference really is against the big boys.

As for the hate bowl, tech will realize what a top 10 team looks like since they have not faced a ranked opponent all year. Don’t think techies should be talking smack about the dawgs schedule. The only two losses coming at the hands of the top 2 teams in the country. Has tech played a team ranked in the top 15 all year. Nope.

wreckmaniac,

Thank you for your concern. Sorry to inform you but that was a parody. I understand this may be difficult for you to understand but what this means was it was a joke (simple terms for you). In regards to a bunch of UGA fans coming on here and trashing your beloved school….not the case. I am trashing the entire conference and I am a fan of the conference in general!! I realize that most fans do not want to admit the acc is the red headed stepchild in the media but it is true. Bowl results for all teams last year plus overall BCS record has proven that once you venture out of your “conference” results are sub standard when compared to SEC. Many GT fans on this blog have also stated how they have put three astronauts in space from GT as well as the next Wal Mart manager is a GT graduate. Does this make you a better person on an individual basis or is it used simply by association to raise the individual profile of the blogger? Did you personally take these same courses as these individuals (whose accomplishments should be celebrated) or did they outperform you?

All Tech student athletes must pass two terms of Calcalus to be able to remain eligable. UGA student athletes only have to be able to write their name; with a crayon. School of food science? Poultry science? Live Stock Management? My Grandpa had 144 acre farm and was an excellent live stock manager. However he only had a third grade education. Tech is a tough school like Notre Dame. UGA is only a tough school if you are Not there on an athletic scholarship.

Go Jackets!!! Sting UGAH to death.

GT22, 16 is not top 15. They passed you at the technical school.

If tech players can’t pass they just get lost in academic guidance offices until a few years later and then NCAA violations. That’s the real reason tech only has a limited # of scholarship players.

Didn’t a UGA grad start Gtech? Thought so…..They are part of the University System of Ga. right.

SLIM G uga is not a top 10 team or can’t you read? Are you talking crap that after we beat you that GT will realize BAMA & GATORS are still ahead of us by a little? UGA had the hardest schedual before the season, but once the games were played UGA played a GSU(haha),C Mich.(haha),a scare @ so-so USC, JOKE ASU, a JOKE UT, a JOKE Vandy(duke), a JOKE LSU(Miss), scare @ so-so Kentucky, scare @ JOKE Auburn. WHAT against better than expected GT? We will help make your SoS better(hahahaha) can Uga believe it! Will get back to you(either way SLIM) Saturday with our Co-ACC Coastal Title or ACC COASTAL TITLE and you didn’t even have a chance at the SEC east(HAHAHAHA). KEEP LIVING on that HARDEST Schedual B-4 the season crap. I am sure Texas, Texas Tech, USC, Penn State, and damn BALL STATE would love to play your schedual.

SlimG (the G is for Goober) - Check your facts - FSU was rated 15th when they played GT. ESPN.com is a good source if you are need of one…. You see, 15 is less than 16 or, if you remember from your third grade class last year, 15 < 16.

Yes - GT was (co-)founded by a UGA grad. He was smart enough to know 1 - Georgia needed a high quality school and 2 - UGA would never be able to be a high quality school. Now, what’s your point in bringing it up? A little green eyed there aren’t you?? Jealousy is not a good thing you know.

Shhh ….. I think I hear your mommy calling. Time to get off her computer and let the adults have the discussions.

Pi$$, great jokes. Let’s see Ball state barely beat 2007 MAC champion CMichigan last week so there you go.

These teams became a joke after we pounded them. With a dime and that co championship maybe the Varsity will give you a chili dog.

Texas Tech is the joke. They get pounded by a good team and they fall only 5 spots. Wish the SEC had that type of latitude. Anyway the only losses for the dawgs are the top 2 teams in the nation and are 13th. That makes sense.

Tell me again how great that Virginia running game is. USC ran over them remember. And the Hookies, do they have a qb. Has tech played anyone with a good qb, running back, and wr? You guys will see. Then we can start over with your football education.

Lose to Vtech, Virginia, and North Carolina while talking smack? Does that sound intelligent? If any SEC team has three losses it knows the ramifications. Peach Bowl.

By Michael

SlimG, The reason TTU didn’t fall that much is because they have beaten a great team (Texas) whereas UGA only has a few good wins (LSU, maybe USC).

By SlimG

November 23, 2008 4:07 PM | Link to this

Newsflash Mike, Texas is not that great. They couldn’t hold a big lead or tackle one guy with two against TTU. That is also why they’re ranked not rated as some idiot mentioned higher than OK.

Congradulations Tech on a great win over Miami. Paul Johnson appears to be the coach you all hoped he would be. Here is hoping for a VT loss next Saturday to put you in the Championship game. As a Dawg fan and graduate, I do hope you lose to us next weekend. It should be a whale of a game. Here is hoping for a good old fashioned slugfest with no injuries.

Same old tiresome “Your team and your conference both suck” crap. Let’s just show up and play the game in Athens, what do you say? And may the best team win, and if it’s not us, there’s always next year. This namecalling crap gets tiring.

Legitimate point about, you know, college football - hey, it happens - how in the world does Tech’s secondary have a hope of slowing down Georgia’s 2 big stud WR’s? I’m afraid Stafford’s going to just start taking 3-step drops and light us up all day…

By gtne80

November 23, 2008 7:07 PM | Link to this

reebok - I have the same concerns regarding how our defense matches up with their offense. We’re still a bit young and somewhat banged up in the secondary. Losing Griffin at LB was a big blow too. You have to figure that CMR has looked back at the Tech game films. Seems that UVa and FSU had some success with short passes. Getting to Stafford early in the game would be a good thing.

UGA’s coaches have to be more than a little concerned with what they saw from our offense on Thursday night. UM came in with a pretty well respected D with loads of speed and talent. What trouble they have had this year has been with their D. Lots of the Dawg faithful calling for Martinez’s head. The week off has to help them. Look what it did for UNC.

Straight up, I think they beat us by 3-4 points. Playing in Athens adds another 4-6 points. I expect the Vegas line to be around 8-10 points when it comes out.

To win, we’ll need to play our very best game and we may need a few breaks. The difference this year for me is that I do feel that we have a fighting chance.

Honestly, I don’t think player-for-player we are on their level yet, but this IS college football. A lot of what happens is determined with what goes on between the ears of these young men. Coach Johnson has our guys fired up and believing. The loyal opposition has been less than happy (with some in-fighting and finger pointing) since the UF game.

I’ll say this, Richt better have his guys up and ready. If they show up thinking this is another “ho-hum, we’ll just go out and beat Tech again” game, they may be in for a rude awakening.
