View from Miami
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Both teams enter tonight’s 7:30 p.m. ESPN game with a lot at stake.
Miami (7-3, 4-2) controls the Coastal Division. Beat Ga. Tech and N.C. State, and the Canes go to Tampa for the ACC Championship Game.
The Jackets (7-3, 4-3) need to win to keep their ACC hopes alive, and to earn a better bowl invitation.
No. 23 Miami enters on a five-game winning streak. But Tech, which has beaten Miami three straight times, is favored by 3 1/2 points.
Craig Handel, of The News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla., answered five questions about the matchup:
What are the biggest reasons for Miami’s five-game win streak?
The biggest reasons are great second-half defense and a little luck. Miami has outscored teams 87-38 in the third quarter this season and 37-7 during the streak. The luck comes from Wake Forest kicker Sam Swank not playing in a 16-10 Miami win, Virginia missing two field goals and Miami recovering two of its own fumbles and the Hokies dropping a long pass in the fourth quarter last week.
What makes Miami’s defense so good?
Defensive coordinator Bill Young came to Miami from Kansas and has done a great job. Players really like him. MLB Glenn Cook got his 6th season of eligibility and has been a great leader while making a couple of plays. Two years ago against GT, he returned a fumble for a TD. Freshman LB Sean Spence has made some big plays this season while freshman DE Marcus Robinson had his first three sacks of the season against Virginia Tech to earn ACC honors.
What concerns Miami most about playing Ga. Tech?
Miami coach Randy Shannon said Georgia Tech will get its yards, but that the defense can’t break. The Yellow Jackets’ defensive line impresses Shannon, who said he recruited some of those players. Miami’s offensive line gave up four sacks last week, but the Canes get back left tackle Jason Fox, who has made 33 starts. He’s been bothered by a sprained right ankle.
Tell us how the quarterbacks have developed this season and what we can expect in terms of a rotation.
Since Game 2, Robert Marve has started and Jacory Harris comes in on the 4th series. Who plays in the second half has been based on who is playing better. In the last four games, it’s been Harris, Marve, Harris, Marve alternating as having the big games.
Marve is a better runner, although Harris has had some big gains. Harris is a better touch passer while Marve has a stronger arm. Marve is more prone to mistakes, Harris a better game manager. It would seem this would be Harris’ turn to make the big plays for Miami’s offense.
Miami’s D-line was outstanding against Virginia Tech. What do you expect tonight?
Miami will play 10, 11 players along the defensive line. As a result, they’ve stayed fresh and are getting better. Last week, Miami had six sacks and allowed just 77 yards rushing, Va. Tech’s lowest output of the season. Players and coaches keep talking about needing to play assignment football to stop Ga. Tech.
With Miami rotating so many defensive linemen, it will be interesting to see if Tech’s O-line can perform better than it did against UNC. That will be one of the keys tonight.
What do you think will be the biggest factor?

Biggest factor will be if Nesbitt can play. Jaybo is a great, smart kid, but he will get killed behind that patched-up offensive line.

As already stated, Nesbitts health is the key factor. We now, finally, realize how the ACC teams stack up a full season of uncertainty and perhaps Miami is the best of the conference at this point. Tech needs to put all phases together meaning avoid turnovers, conduct time-consuming drives and pressure the QB. If Tech wins either of these last two, we are definitely a step ahead of where we were a year ago.

Wear white tonight even if you don’t agree with it. It’s better than embarassing the program. I agree it is a bit of a juvenile idea, but hey it is out there so let’s support the program. At least this administration is TRYING to create some excitement around the program. Better than the lame ol’ lame ol’ of the past.

AJC, how about getting down to the stadium with your marketing staff and handing out white shirts with AJC on them to help out instead of turning the fans against each other? People, if you have a ticket to the game tonight and you don’t wear white you are saying that you do not support this school, its coaches and most of all its players. For crying out loud, it is not about YOU. It is about showing the team we are behind them no matter what and to complain about having to wear white on a cold night is absurd. I can guarantee if the people who sit next to me in section 205 don’t have their white on I am going to be giving them hell all night. Go to Wal Mart and buy a $7 sweatshirt and put your butts in the seats. If you can’t wear white, you may as well put on orange and green. This makes me sick.
On to the game. Tech has to score early and often to put the pressure on the Miami offense if we want to win this game no matter who is under center for us. If we come out slow and sputtering it will be close all the way through. 2 TO’s or less and we win. I don’t see UM putting up more than 17 on us without getting points off of turnovers.

The Ramblin’ Wreck does not brake for Sebastian the Ibis. I think we want it more than they do. wreckmaniac has it right, for offense, at least: If our Jackets avoid turnovers, keep the ball for long drives, and pressure their QB, we win.

The key is not Josh or Jaybo in my opinion. Either one is capable although Josh more than Jaybo. So that leaves the key being Techs offensive line. This offense is only as good as the offensive line play—period. You can have “good” backs butyou MUST have excellent line play to win with this O.If you look at our wins this year ,it is obvious that for the most part our Oline did a really good job. Someone had a good idea: make sure to also wear a white hat! Everyone has a white baseball hat, it will keep your head warm, and will look good too! You can wear your warm layers underneath (sweater, jacket, etc), but you could wear a thin white rain coat or hoodie, or something flimsy but white on the outside.
Go Jackets!! BEAT UM!!
By GT -- Miami
November 20, 2008 11:58 AM | Link to this
Turnovers are the key for the Jackets. They have been the main reason in all 3 losses this year (even the UNC game; it was 7-0 with 1:20 to play in the 3rd qtr when Roddy Jones fumbled the punt on his own 25 yard line, which was then followed by another fumble, on the 20 yrd line, the very next series = 2 UNC TDs, and game over).
If the boys protect the ball, White & Gold win, with no worries! 0 TO’s = 10+ pt victory 1 TO = Win 2 TO = toss-up 3+ TO’s = see VT, VA, and UNC.

Chike55, We were only supposed to have 3, maybe 4 wins this year. You are part of the problem with college football and society in general. You want instant gratification. Like the economy, it’s not going to change overnight. Someone wrote that it would take 2 years to get players to fully understand this offense. If we have seven wins and still don’t comprehend the whole picture, just think what happens in 2010. I know, you may have to see some tough times, but like the economy, it will get better. Have some faith and quit badmouthing people before they get started.

How about two programs that weren’t expected to even be MENTIONED in a title hunt playing for one!!! That is why I am a ‘Cane and you aren’t - I thought GT was a smart school - wow - maybe Georgia is - you saw how well that whole “blackout” went (although I did love it when you killed FLA last year) See you at the game! Biggest factor without a doubt will be turnovers. We can’t afford to have ANY. But if we do, we at least need to force a turnover or two to make up for it. If we do not turn the ball over, we win. Simple as that.
Regarding the “whiteout”. Quit complaining people and JUST WEAR FRIGGIN WHITE!!!!!!! Geez, sometimes I am embarrased to admit I’m a Tech fan - not because of the teams or their records, but because of the pizz poor attitudes of some of our so called fans. Do you want to support your school or not? Do you want potential recruits to watch this game on TV and see a half-azz effort by the fans in supporting a whiteout?!? What kid in his right mind would want to play ball at a school where the fans don’t even support them? And for those who think the whiteout is copying UGA, Penn St or other teams ideas… WHO CARES! Just do it!! It has already been announced and it will be mentioned on national TV, so whatever damage you think will be done to the team’s reputation by having a whiteout is going to happen regardless! Why would you make it even more of an embarrasment (in your minds, not mine) by showing the whole country that half (or any percentage for that matter) of the fans don’t even support it?!?! If you purposely do not wear white to this game tonight, do us all a favor and quit claiming to be a Tech fan!!!!!
And one more thing…

I am concerned that Tech fans are due for a hissy fit this year and will embarass the entire City of Atlanta on national television again. From ESPN.com on last year’s Boston College game:
“The home crowd grew increasingly frustrated, drawing several warnings in the second half for throwing cups and other debris on the field.”
Lets try not to have another juvenile episode like this tonight Tech fans. I, and many others like me, may think the Georgia Tech football program is a total joke, but your childish actions reflect poorly on all Atlanta residents like myself. Try and show a little class and sportsmanship when your team predictably folds like a tent and takes one on the chin from Miami tonight, okay? Do us all a favor. Thanks.

Must have been funny as in “Gee, that’s funny - there’s still a fan in that seat. At Bubba Dudd, we usually can’t fill the stadium, much less have people stick around while we are getting beaten like a drum. Those mutts sure are funny. Otherwise, good game on the flats tonight. The fans showed up and wore white, they were loud and Tech took Miami behind the woodshed in front of a national audience with hundreds of potential recruits on hand.
Dawgs beware. Tech’s gonna be rolling in next week with some swagger and without Chan Gailey or Reggie Ball to hand you the game outright.
