Backup Shaw can get it done

I think everyone agrees that a healthy Josh Nesbitt is Tech’s best option at quarterback (no pun intended).

But Nesbitt is trying to come back from another sprained ankle, this time his left one. There’s a very real possibility we could see Jaybo Shaw.

I’ve heard some doom and gloom about whether the Jackets can win with Shaw. After outstanding performances against Mississippi State and Duke, the true freshman regressed against FSU.

Then came the North Carolina game.

Nesbitt was pulled after the first possession of the third quarter. Shaw came in and sparked the team. The Jackets were moving steadily until getting flagged for a chop block and holding on consecutive plays.

With the exception of Jonathan Dwyer’s 85-yard TD run with six minutes left, Shaw’s first drive was as good as the offense looked all day.

Here’s a recap of that drive, which started at Tech’s 20.

Dwyer 4-yard rush

Shaw 8-yard rush, first down

Shaw recovers his own fumble, no gain

Dwyer 2-yard rush

Shaw 9-yard rush on 3rd and 8, first down

Shaw 7-yard rush

Roddy Jones 21-yard rush on pitch from Shaw, first down at UNC 29

Dwyer 1-yard rush, chop block penalty on RG Joseph Gilbert

Dwyer 3-yard rush, holding penalty on WR Correy Earls

Shaw sacked for 5-yard loss

Roddy Jones 18-yard rush

Shaw 7-yard rush

Punt, touchback

We all know what happened next. The defense forces a punt, Roddy Jones fumbles it, and the Tar Heels score to make it 14-0. Shaw only got two more snaps. He was sacked on the first. On the second, he was hit from behind and fumbled. UNC recovered, scored again, and that was that.

Shaw is capable. He can get the ball to Jonathan Dwyer and Roddy Jones when it needs to be dealt. He’s got to hold onto the ball (it should be noted the fumble against FSU wasn’t his fault). Tech can win on Thursday even if Nesbitt can’t go.

But it won’t matter who plays QB if the offensive line doesn’t block somebody. This is a banged-up, makeshift line playing without its starting tackles. The extra rest should help some, but how much?

Do you agree that Tech can beat Miami with Shaw?

Tech can win with Shaw, but he surely had better stay healthy. It appears that this offense will need 3-4 qbs who are ready to run the offense at short notice. Go Jackets.

I’m not real good with math, but if I’m counting correctly, Shaw took 14 snaps against UNC and fumbled 2 of them. That’s your idea of a ‘capable’ QB? Behind a patched-up offensive line, our QB is going to be running for his life all night. We are a heck of a lot better off w/ Nesbitt - if he’s healthy - but I’m betting Nesbitt doesn’t play tomorrow. Anyway - TECH FANS - SHOW UP, WEAR WHITE AND BE LOUD!

Good news! Administration has agreed that we can use AMC for the post game Tickle Pile. It will be open for two hours after the game. One word of caution: I don’t think this would be an appropriate place for families to drop by, warm up and wait for the traffic to clear out. As we all know the Tickle Piles are a little different than when we were in school and may be objectionable for families. It’s a little more hard core than it used to be but still great fun.

Good Grief, I apologize, because I’m really not trashing Jaybow Shaw. He is a D2 QB at best. We have little or NO chance to win with this kid at QB. I am really amazed that Coach recruited him away from MTSU. His best chance to play would have been there. We don’t need anymore REGGIES!

As long as Shaw has been getting the reps in practice (and it sounds like he has) we’ll be ok. He is not as explosive as a healthy Nesbitt but we don’t have a healthy Nesbitt. I’d rather let Shaw run the offense against Miami and let Nesbitt get healthy for the UGA game.

If we can only win one of the next two (and I’m not saying that is the case), I think most on this board can agree that we want it to be the mutts. Get healthy Josh!

This will be an almost exact replay of the UNC game.

Josh will force trying to play - he will hobble around and we will be constantly punting on 4th and 15.

Their defense is just TOO FAST for a limping QB and a noble but patchwork O-Line

Once the line is tired and further banged up, Shaw will come in and get creamed again and fumble again.

Our defense will slow them down, but the turnovers will kill us and we will have limited offense.

By the time we get to UGA - pretty much everyone will be hurt and it will be another 51-7 debacle.

By AlabamaRamblinwreck

November 19, 2008 8:50 AM | Link to this

Yes, but he cannot turn the ball over.

And our defense must play big, very big. That means we need to turn them over.

We cannot put Jaybo in a position where everyone knows he is going to pass the ball, or the speedy Miami defense will eat him up.

I would rather have Josh because of his escapability, but if he is 50-60%, that will not work, and we need him 90-100% for the most important game of the year.

Go Jackets!!

By Zach

November 19, 2008 8:53 AM | Link to this

Hell yes Jaybo can run the offense! Please, coach Johnson, I know a healthy Nesbitt gives us our best chance to win, but please don’t continue to play a OBVIOUSLY, VISIBLY injured Nesbitt when you have a more than capable back-up in Shaw. That said, if shaw gets hurt, don’t you dare trot Calvin Booker out there. I’d rather you put Dwyer in at QB and Lucas Cox as B-back. I know that eliminates the pass, but noone actually defends the pass anyway.

gtforever - I’ll bet the defensive coordinator at Miss. State thinks Jaybo Shaw can play div. 1 football. They have one of the best rushing defenses in the SEC and Shaw destroyed them.

We’ll be fine with Jaybo under center as long as he hangs on to the ball.

Nerds would rather beat their instate superior vs. win ACC…once again proves insects season is measured by trying to beat a team that owns them. Better had try to beat the team you are favored against because you will not be expected to beat UGA. As Dawg fans we concentrate on winning the SEC (will not happen this year of course)….we always assume we will beat yech. 7 years in a row will make you complacent in regards to beating another team.

How many points did Tech score after Shaw came in during the FSU game? And how many fumbles did he have after he came in for Josh during the UNC game? We need to pray Josh is healthy. Shaw is a D2 QB—he can dominate in the small games (MSU & Duke), but when it comes to the big show, he can’t hang under the pressure. He’s made this very obvious in 2 straight games.

GT can beat Miami with Shaw; primarily because Football is the ultimate TEAM sport. If all of the GT players get focused and play well, we can win with Shaw. Shaw is capable of running the offense, but he is young. He will get better with time and maturity. I watched Shaw in practice during the spring; he understands the system and he throws the ball fairly well when given the chance.

I say we play Shaw against Miami and make sure Nesbit is as healthy as possible for the UGA game; however, I completely support PJ and his coaches with whatever decisions they make regarding the team. We are very fortunate to have PJ at GT!

The future of GT Football is very bright indeed!!

I have total confidence in Jaybo. He will be ready.

And it is funny to read the few dilusional posts by cane fans who believe they are some thug dynasty again.

And blowhards, I wouldn’t do too much bragging about attendance. You’re home attendance is right there with Duke.

I know some of you think Shaw cant beat UM, but we need to go ahead and start him. He’s young but capable. Yes he’s looked bad as well, but start the game with him trying to save Nesbitt for the mangy mutts. I think he’s ready to step it up again. If we do a better job up front, he’ll do fine. This game doesn’t mean much, because the odds of UVA, VT and UNC all losing are slim, so it’s important to have Nesbitt healthy for the 29th.

I think that Josh gives us a better chance to win-Speed. I will say that Jaybo is a very capable young man in running this team-The one thing that I so like about Jaybo is that he trust that his backs are going to be there and is not afraid to pitch while getting hit which can spring the play. It will come down to assignments and Tech has to protect the ball. I look for the defense to step up. This is the last game at Dodd for some of these men-Look for MJ to bust out on Primetime. I will love to see us start a string vs the Dawgs and then ask the fans how important will it be to beat Tech. Not to get ahead of myself-I think that Tech has a good chance to run crazy on UGA-I’m only saying based upon what I’ve seen other teams do against the Dogs and I will put Tech’s running game against any that the dogs have faced this year! Watching the Navy-ND game last Saturday I saw plays that Tech has not ran yet-When they all get fully into this Option- It will become very interesting!!! Are you kidding me??? I was at one of the games where he fumbled the ball. And, then to do it again was just horrible. I honestly think if we don’t have Nesbitt, they we don’t have a shot at Miami. I’m sorry but Jaybo hasn’t proved anything to me!!!

Ok….Have to get on my soap box for a minute….All jokes aside…Did you see the headline on AJC about Travis Henry fathering 9 children by 9 different women? Absolutely mind boggling….now I like to talk trash on blogs as much as anyone else but this is absolutely asinine. At some point we need to hold people responsible for their actions…who cares what school this idiot attended (UT) as any school would have let his sorry AZZ in as long as he could run with the ball….what a freaking waste of skin and we will be paying for all his offspring through taxes….Ok now I am done with that you can give me grief as I will do the same.

Hello GT fans,

I have read all the info on the net about this game from the Canes prospective and waited to get some from yours. The white out will be cool, it will be the closes thing to snow a lot of our players have seen. Well, I would say I wish you well but that would be a lie. I can say that I hope no one on your team gets hurt, both teams are young and this will be the beginning of a great match up year end and year out. By the way we will get our offence together, we do need a better OL but the main reason we don’t score as many points is because we continue to play Marve at QB, now don’t get me wrong Marve is a very good QB but at this stage Jacory is much better able to read the defense and get the ball to the abundance of young playmakers we have on offence. So, the best chance for you guys to hold us under say 21 points will be to hope that Marve starts off playing well. Also, our defense is playing very good right now, but with you all running that Triple Option our youth scares the hell out of me. I hope we can stay disciplined if we do, we will win, and if we do and Jacory plays then it won’t be close.

I dont think that we can win the game with Jaybo.. I think that if the time comes and we need to throw CPJ would much rather have Josh in. Remember that Jaybo’s interception in the FSU game almost lost us that game. Don’tget me wrong Jaybo will be great and is a good backup. I just don’t know if he is good enough to beat a top level team.

Just a guess, but….

I’m expecting a very poor showing by the fans for the whole “white-out”. I’m betting that about 15% of the fans wear white. On the other hand, it’s not a bad thing:

UGA black-out: Loss FSU black-out: Loss Clemson orange-out: Loss Marshall green-out: Loss

Hey D-Rad, stop copying losing methods.

It amazes me how many Tech fans, no matter what board I am reading, are compliaining about wearing white to the game tomorrow. Go to Wal-Mart and buy a White XXL (or bigger if they have it) sweatshirt and put it over your clothes. I think someone posted they were $5-7.

Go out and freaking support your team and quit whining about everything. Truthfully, it is not going to be that cold tomorrow night (Cold would be 30 years ago when Tech played out here in Colorado Springs). Dress in layers and slap that big white sweatshirt over everything!!!!!

Absolutey correct. Wouldn’t be shocked to see a 17-14 type game. Miami is a 3.5 point dog. So Vegas sees this game as even (GT is giving pts. b/c of the supposed HFA even though they can’t sell out their joint).

If Nesbitt is available to play that answers the question. If it’s kind of questionable then Shaw is capable. We have to remember he played well when he started but not as well when he came in off the bench. Let’s not forget these guys are Sophmore’s and Freshman and they are learing game situations, like what it’s like playing in Chapel Hill on the road where Tech has had a problem for decades. The guess here is Shaw has learned from those two bad experiences and will improve on them. Hopefully Nesbitt is availabe to play at least some. We are going to need 3 to 5 QB’s anyway down the road. Washington redshirted this year will help with depth next year along with the Freshman recruits. Miami though is not the Miami we played the last two years. They are heading to the Miami of old talentwise. Our Division is getting very tough in a fast way.

the supposedly FAST defenses have been worse against us (FSU, MSU, and CLEM) than the power D’s (UNC, BC, VT)

the speedier defenses are often less disciplined so there is wide open lanes to run for dwyer or the pitch is open

Golly, guys. All those 3 star recruits and mid level recruiting classes sure are going to win us some national titles, because CPJ is that awesome. I mean the great O’liar-y never won a national title and only won 10 games once. Bobby Loss won one in the weakest year ever for college football, but never won more than 8 games any other year. And even though, we say this all the time, it’s different now. I can feel it. Never mind that I have been wrong every time when I’ve said it before. I just ignore the facts of how the landscape has changed and how this is the real reason we have had only two win seasons since Dodd’s retirement. And never mind that none of our great coaches since have ever taken made us a top level team consistently. We will take our rightful place among the great college teams, even though we haven’t been there in over 40 years.

HEY TEKKIES - THE GAME THURSDAY NIGHT WITH MIAMI SHOULD BE A CAKE WALK! MIAMI HAS NOTHING. CPJ HAS US AS PREPARED AS WE COULD HOPE TO BE. WHAT WE THE FANS AND THE TEAM NEED TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT IS “NEXT WEEK IN ATHENS”. YOU KNOW THOSE BAD-A* DAWGS WILL BE WATCHING EVERY MOVE WE MAKE. I DON’T THINK IT’S FAIR EITHER THAT THEY GET THE WEEK OFF BEFORE WE HAVE TO PLAY THEM. THATS OK, WE’LL JUST BE MORE WARMED UP THAN THEY ARE.

WHAT TROUBLES ME MORE THAN ANYTHING IS THAT I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THERE WILL BE G E O R G I A PLAYERS AT OUR GAME!! I GUESS THE UPSIDE IS THAT THEY WILL BE FILLING UP SOME SEATS, WHICH WILL LOOK GOOD FOR TV, BUT YOU KNOW THEY’LL BE WEARING THE FEARSOME R E D & B L A C K!

I’M NOT REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT MIAMI. WE’RE A GOOD COME FROM BEHIND TEAM AND I THINK WE’LL GIVE ‘EM A DARN GOOD GAME. EVEN IF THEY WIN, THEY’LL KNOW THEY HAVE PLAYED SOME FOOTBALL WITH GA. TECH.

WHAT WORRIES ME IS THOSE PESKY DAWGS! OH, WILL SOMEONE TELL ‘DAWGHATER’ TO QUIT CALLING THE DAWG FANS NAMES. THAT’S JUST GOING TO P** THEM OFF WHEN WE GO TO ATHENS.

SOMEONE TELL OUR PLAYERS AND COACHES THEY NEED TO NOW WORRY ABOUT MIAMI AND START THINKING ABOUT GEORGIA, N O W!

What I would like to know is how is it possible to have a white-out in a stadium, which after you blew up half the seats and only holds 55 thousand any more, that you still have over TEN THOUSAND TICKETS TO SELL the day before the game ?

What are you going to do ? Paint the empty seats white ?

QUESTION FOR SOME OF YOU YELLOWjackets. How many seats are left in Bobby Ross field? I can’t remember if it was the late 70’s or early 80’s when your AD decided to take some seats out of Bobby Ross field so you could fill it up easier. So, answer me if you will, ‘How many seats are left in Bobby Ross stadium and since you can’t fill it up now, when are you going to take out some more’? Come to think of it, the NCAA should form ARENA FOOTBALL for small schools and schools that don’t have very good regular teams. Tech would fit both bills! That way if the basketball team was playing in the T!T, the arena football team could play in Philips arena or even out at the new Cobb center.

A JOKE FOR EVERYONE ABOUT GEORGIA AND GEORGIA TECH:

TECH AND GEORGIA WERE PLAYING IN ATHENS ONE YEAR. THREE BUDDIES FROM TECH WERE IN ATTANDANCE AT THE GAME. WHILE THEY WERE WALKING AROUND TO THEIR SEATS, ONE LOOKED OVER THE HEDGES AND SAW UGA V VORACIOUSLY LICKING HIS NUTTS! ONE OF THE TECH BUDDIES SAYS TO ONE OF THE OTHERS, “SINCE I CAN’T GET A DATE, I SURE WISH I COULD DO THAT!” ONE OF HIS BUDDIES REPLIED, “YOU BETTER BE QUICK ABOUT IT, THAT DAWG WILL BITE YOU!” YOU GOT TO ADMIT, THAT WAS FUNNY!

Their average attendance is 49,000.

Maybe that answers your questions of how many seats are left ?

Their previous athletics director had the seats counted.

His miscounted them, they announced many years later when Homer Rice said that count was wrong.

How many do they have left ?

Who cares ?

Because no one sits in the seats which are remaining.

WOW! IT’S NOT EVEN GEORGIA AND TECH WEEK AND THE VITRIOL HAS STARTED TO BUILD. DOESN’T TECH HAVE A GAME TONIGHT? DON’T YOU GUYS THINK YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED WITH MIAMI?? IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE THE HURRICANES HAVE BEEN IN THIS POSITION, AND BELIEVE ME COACH SHANNON HAS THESE MEN READY TO PLAY. IT MATTERS NOT WHO THE TECH QB IS…IT’LL BE THE SAME TEAM, JUST A LITTLE DIFFERENCE IN SPEED. BUT, MIAMI IS POSSIBLY THE FASTEST TEAM IN THE COUNTRY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF UNIV. OF FLA.

IF I AM PAUL JOHNSON, I START NESBITT AND STAY WITH HIM IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. SAVE JAYBO FOR GEORGIA. THAT WOULD THROW A KINK IN THEIR HOSE BECAUSE THEY’LL BE TRAINING FOR NESBITT. BESIDES, JOSH IS A LIFELONG GEORGIA FAN, UNTIL THEY DIDN’T SIGN HIM. IF HE STARTS AT GEORGIA HE’LL PROBABLY HAVE FLASHBACKS OF HIS HIGHSCHOOL DAYS AND HIS DESIRE TO PLAY FOR THE DOGS. NEXT THING YOU KNOW HE’S THROWING INTERCEPTIONS TO ASHER ALLEN OR RENNIE CURRAN.

I PERSONALLY CAN’T WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK, THE SH!T TALKING WILL BE ALMOST UNBEARABLE, BUT YOU KNOW WE ALL LOVE IT! BEING A GEORGIA STATE FAN, I REALLY DON’T HAVE A ‘DOG’ IN THIS FIGHT. I SIMPLY LIKE TO PULL FOR THE TEAM I THINK WILL WIN, AND I THINK GEORGIA WILL KICK TECH’S TEETH OUT THIS YEAR. I REMEMBER WHEN CPJ CAME TO TECH, HE SAID HE CAME “TO BEAT GEORGIA”, WELL PABLO- IT AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN THIS YEAR.

GOOD LUCK TONIGHT TEKKIES! YOU’RE DEFINITELY GOING TO NEED IT. IF I COULD GIVE ANY OF YOU FANS SOME ADVICE? WEAR YOUR WHITE BUT STAY AT THE HOUSE, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU WHO LIVE OUTSIDE THE PERIMETER. IT’S GOING TO BE COLD, TECH WILL LOSE AND YOU’LL JUST BE P!SSED OFF ON THAT LONG DRIVE HOME. Space shuttle Endeavour, which took off last Friday with three Tech grads aboard, will fly over Atlanta at 6:10 p.m., according to the school. It will look like a moving star, flying from the southwest to the northeast. Tech plans to show a live feed of the space station on its video board during the game.

At least you get a good education at Tech. At UGA you get drunk at your choice of 52 bars within walking distance. After graduation you end up in re-hab; or if you’re one of the successful ones, get a job at Wal-mart buffing floors at night.

A lot of doom and gloom here. A healthly Nesbitt is better, but I believe Shaw can hold his own. Might have to throw tonight anyways. Miami’s defense has a lot of speed, but will they be discipline? FSU wasn’t.
