Coastal craziness
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Today’s practice is a big one for Georgia Tech. QB Josh Nesbitt and DT Vance Walker have been resting their sprained ankles; if they practice today without any setbacks, they should be able to give it a go.
CB Jahi Word-Daniels was in a non-contact jersey on Saturday and CPJ said he might be a game-time decision.
Last week, CPJ called the ACC “a hodgepodge of parity.”
There’s no better way to describe it.
The Coastal Division free-for-all continued Saturday when North Carolina, which was in the driver’s seat, lost 17-15 to Maryland. The Tar Heels converted 1 of 11 third downs and were shut out in the second half.
UNC’s loss came after Virginia Tech, which also had controlled its own destiny, lost at Miami.
Ranked ACC teams are 3-9 over the past four weeks.
So now Miami comes to town controlling its own destiny. The Hurricanes are the only Coastal team with two conference losses.
If Georgia Tech can find a way to win to go 5-3, the Jackets will have a shot at winning the division. Tech’s chances of reaching Tampa have improved dramatically the past five days.
But even if Tech wins on Thursday, the Jackets still need North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Virginia to lose one more each. Here are their schedules:
UNC — N.C. State, at Duke
Va. Tech — Duke, Virginia
Virginia — Clemson, at Va. Tech
NC State is playing better, just beat Wake, and could beat UNC. But is it realistic to think UVA could lose to Clemson, then beat Va. Tech in Blacksburg?
In this year’s ACC, anything is possible.

Well girls….everyone knows your league stinks….Yahoo Sports wrote a convincing article to just leave the acc champ/chump out of the BCS. Of course that would prevent Ball St. from beating up on someone from the acc…just finish the regular season and be done with it….stick to basketball.

I’m sorry. I don’t have much faith that we will beat UM or Ugay. At a time when we should have dominated we have choked against UVA and UNC. UM and Ugay are terrible teams, UM on offense and Ugay on defense but I’m afraid we will come up empty. Actually with the ACC being down the way it is we should be headed to a BCS bowl but as usual we are headed west. I just don’t see this as much of an improvement over Chan’s teams except CPJ makes everyone feel good by making bold statements that he has not backed up.

I am at a loss to understand why so many of my fellow alumni don’t seem to like for me to talk about our Tickle Piles. Face it, people know about our Tickle Pile tradition so why hide it. In today’s world people are tolerant of others people’s proclivities and why should our long Tickle Pile tradition be hidden from view. Let’s come out and let everyone know that we don’t have any problem with publically acknowledging our lifestyle and school traditions especially one so closely associated with our football team.

Observer,
Keep drinking the Kool Aid…Maybe this “ranking” can predict that if you go to a BCS bowl (a big if) your record will become 1-10. When the national media is calling for you to be left out of the BCS bowls you know the gig is up. When the top ranked (now there is an oxymoron) team is #22 (and this same team lost to Middle Tennessee) I would say you have terrible conference. Thing is I am not the only one saying it. If the “ranking” you mentioned makes you feel better about the ineptitude, go for it!

As long as we’re looking at rankings -
I’ve seen SEVERAL posts on this blog over the past week suggesting that UGA has the #1 strength of schedule ranking in the country. While that was indeed true at the beginning of the season, it is not close to the truth now. UGA’s SoS has been negatively impacted by the fact that the SEC (with the exception of Alabama and Florida - both of whom pounded the mutts) is down this year and Arizona State turned out to be worse than their pre-season ranking.
So, looking at the CURRENT SoS numbers reveals some interesting facts:
Six of the top eleven teams are form the ACC - Tech is #11. The toughest schedule in the SEC belongs to Florida at #15 and the mighty mutts from Athens can proudly boast the SEC’s second toughest schedule at #16.
Strength of Schedule Rankings
That’s right muttlanders, our Strength of Schedule is higher than yours and our conference is rated higher than yours.
Don’t you just hate it when the facts get in the way of your pathetic arguments?

When in school I was told that our Tickle Pile tradition was an outgrowth of the Tickle Pile phenomenon that started in west coast sororities during the 60’s. I now understand that it actually started at Tech in 1917. At any rate it was basically innocent fun that starts when a few guy gather and start tickling each other. Usually they do this to the point of exhaustion and create a kind of rush in the process. I think that recently some have gotten a little more provocative with there tickling causing some concern among administrators and the Tickle Piles have come under more scrutiny from leadership.

Jay,
Completely understand your frustration that Tech hasn’t been able to take hold of the division race, but you have to acknowledge that the limitations to success this year are pretty daunting. First, we have 10 fewer scholarship athletes right now that virtually every team we are playing. Some of that is because of limits because of academic mis-reporting and some of that is because players bolted when Coach Johnson was hired. Second, the players that are at Tech are young. Other than the D Line, we have virtually no senior leadership on the team. We’re starting more Fr and So than any other team in the ACC. Third, we’re installing an entirely new and complex offense. Dwyer, Nesbitt, Shaw, Jones, Thomas and company are all coming back next year and will be even better with more experience under their belts.
I won’t make any outlandish predictions about the last two regular season games, but I fully expect a more rested and focused team to play extremely well against Miami Thursday night.

It’s a long shot, but we are technically still alive in the ACC running. If we beat Miami this week, we can have a real discussion. We’ll still need some help from other teams, but it’s possible.
Why argue with the mutts? It’s pointless and only clogs the blogs with nonsense. They’ve fallen off the bandwagon and they have nothing better to do now.

I agree with all that say “forget the ACC Championship madness, just focus on Miami on Thursday night.”
Regarding Thursday night, I’m concerned that Nesbitt isn’t going to be able to give it a go or that he will be less than 100%. Personally, I don’t believe he was ready for the UNC game. I’m picking up a lot of “disinformation” coming out of the coaching staff/athletic department regarding the injury status of our players.
Personnaly, I think we should have Nesbitt him out of the UNC game with an eye on having him at 100 percent for the Miami game. He was banged up and we were playing with a new alignment of our OL. In restrospect, it was easy to see that he was going to get knocked around even more.
If Nesbitt isn’t ready for Thursday night, we’re looking at another 7-5 finish. Worse yet, it’s another year of losing our last 3, and 4 of the last 5. It sort of takes the luster off of what looked like a very promising start.

The ACC may not have the marquis program this year, but that’s because all the good teams are VERY young. Ga Tech, UNC, FSU are all teams on the rise and playing mostly Freshman and Sophomores. Plus, they have new coaches, Paul Johnson, Butch Davis and Jimbo Fisher (Bobby doesn’t coach anymore).
Other than Bama and Florida, the SEC stinks. UGa would have been in overtime against Auburn if they could have kicked an extra point early in the game. Auburn? the team that scored only 3 points against Miss St. Teams like Kentucky, So Carolina, Vandy & Ole Miss are so overrated. Vandy lost to Duke (the doormat of the ACC). Ole Miss lost to Wake. SEC fans, put down the Budweiser and hop out of the bed of the pickup and get ready to be humiliated in the bowl season.
For TECH, I’d love to get to Tampa, but everyone needs to realize that in Paul Johnson’s first year with a new system, Ga Tech could beat FSU and Miami in the same season!!! How sweet is that? Who would have believed that could happen back in August? Let’s all get down to the stadium on Thursday night and get LOUD!!! And wear white. Let’s show the nation that Ga Tech is a team that needs to be looked at in the years to come. GO JACKETS!!!

This has already been a pretty good year for Tech considering where we were at the start of the season. Win two out of the next three and it would quite impressive. But we’ve got to recruit some top players for the system. Right now it appears that we are not setting the world on fire but we do have a couple of pretty good looking kids coming in. Lets finish strong there for the future.

If Tech can beat the “Dollar Genral Pre-season national Champs” and win the plastic bowling trophy I will be so damn happy. If Tech can beat UGA it will be worse than the day Dale Earnhardt died. Trailer park flags all over the south will be at half mast. The difference with Dale and the Dawgs is that Dale could close the deal! He had heart and no HYPE! Let’s see…. the SEC always cries the chant, “But we beat up on each other.” Why doesn’t this apply to the ACC this year?
The Coastal Division is a great example of “But we beat up on each other.” There is parity.

Miami game is important. Yes, winning would keep us in the running for the ACCCG but more importantly and more relevantly, it would keep us east of the Mississippi for a bowl game.
If we lose to Miami we could easily get knocked down to the Emerald or Humiliation Bowl. Win, and we might could go to the Gator or Orlando. With all of the three-loss teams this game will make a BIG difference on who goes where.
As an aside, either VT or UVA WILL lose another game when they play. Best scenario would likely be NCSU beating UNC (hey, they beat Wake!), Clemson beating UVA, and UVA beating VT. Go Pack! Go Tigers! Go Blue Devils!
Opening Lines: GT minus 4 VT minus 17.5 vs. Duke UNC minus 11.5 vs. NCSU UVA plus 3 vs. Clemson
Laugh lines: OSU is minus 19 vs. UMich, and Vandy is minus 3.5 vs. UT. Maybe the Chattanooga News-Free Press will now start covering Vandy with the same enthusiasm as they do UT and UGA.
UGA is looking more beatable after their, ahem, stellar showing against Auburn, but I still have that game in the L column…just because.

Virginia losing to Clemson, then beating Virg. Tech is very plausible, but I don’t think that NC State or Duke will beat UNC, but like you said, in the ACC this year, all seems possible.
I just want GT to beat Miami. This will assure us at least an 8 win season (with hope for one more win on 11/29) and a 5-3 record in our division, which will tie for 1st.
I believe a win over Miami will go a long way in recruiting and towards a good bowl option.

I am so freak’n tired of the whole “Any win in the SEC is a good win” CRAP!
The media is constantly trashing the ACC. There is a real chance the ACC champion might not play in a BCS game because of the negative coverage. One and maybe even two of the over-rated mid-major teams which are currently undefeated (primarily due to the ridiculous weak schedules they have played) will probably bump the ACC Champion out of the BCS. The ACC has several solid teams and the ACC has played the toughest out of conference schedule of any conference in college football. Look at the facts.
Does college football REALY want all of the BCS conference schools to schedule SUPER soft out of conference schedules like the SEC, BIG10 and BIG12 already do EVERY YEAR???? IF the ACC Champ gets left out of the BCS, this is the obvious signal which the BCS is sending……..play the easiest schedule you can possible arrange and you have a better chance of getting to a BCS game!!!!!!
The SEC is NOT any where near as solid THIS YEAR as most SEC fans would like to believe; the media keeps talking about how great the BIG 12 and the SEC are this year.
Most SEC fans think the SEC is so solid “top to bottom” and many think the ACC is weak. Well let’s consider a few facts regarding the 2008 season so far:
SEC vs. ACC head to head: 3-3
Teams ‘receiving votes’ for the top 25 polls: ACC 8 teams SEC 5 teams BIG12 6 teams PAC10 5 teams
Sagarin Conference Rankings:
BIG12 #1
ACC #2
SEC #3
PAC10 #6
(I know this is hard to take, but the Sagarin ranking excludes any bias……..it is simply based on performance and strenght of schedule. Oh yeah, it also ranks the ENTIRE conference top to bottom; not just the top 3-4 teams!!)
Lowest Ranked Teams:
ACC: NC State at #70
SEC: Auburn at #67, Arkansas at #72, Tenn at #90 & Miss St at #106
BIG12: Baylor at #66, Kansas St at #74, Colorado at #77, Texas AM at #95 & Iowa St at #116
PAC10: Arizona St at #69, UCLA at #93, Wash at #130 & Wash St at #151
The BIG12 has 5 VERY good teams and are definitely the best conference this year, but they also have 5 teams that are automatic wins for any decent team in the country.
The SEC has 4 solid teams (Florida, Alabama, UGA & LSU), but the remainder of the conference is simply not very good. The records for the other 8 teams are misleading due to the fact that they have played essentially nobody out of conference!
Miami lost bad to Florida (final score), but they played VERY close until half way through the 4th quarter. Florida better be ready for Florida State and UGA better be ready for GT or these mighty SEC teams might just get beat by lowly ACC teams which you guys say are “weak”. We will see……….you guys might wish the media had not been so unfair to the ACC the past few weeks if Florida and UGA actually lose these two games. If FSU “accidentally” beats Florida and Florida beats Alabama in the SEC Championship game; the SEC will not have a team in the NC game. Think it through.
Go GT!

For all of those bad-mouthing the ACC, here are some stats, which I hope are accurate because I had to do the digging myself. If I made mistakes, I apologize in advance.
ACC team records versus other “power” conferences:
ACC vs. SEC: 3-3 ACC vs. Big East: 4-2 ACC vs. Pac 10: 1-1 ACC vs. Big 10: 0-1 ACC vs. Big 12: 4-0
If my investigation is truly accurate, can we really say that the ACC is the worst conference? Only one conference “dominates” us, we are .500 against the “almighty” SEC and Own the Big 12 where the Heisman and the National Champion should come from. I don’t care which teams we are playing from those conferences. All of the ACC teams play schools from each conference, so there is no excuse there.
One last side note which makes me feel better living in South Bend, IN…the ACC is 2-0 against Notre Dame!
I think it’s time to get off the ACC sucks bandwagon!

Even if they did follow the links you provided as soon as they read the words “simple mean” and “central mean” they were lost.
ACCStinks, I’ll point it out for you plain and simple. The ACC has 8 of 12 teams in the top 40. The SEC has 7 of 12. OK, the ACC has no team in the top 10 and the SEC has 2. But the ACC has no team below #70 and the SEC has 4 teams below #70. It’s the crap teams at the bottom of the league that are doing in the SEC this year. Miss St, ARkansas, Auburn, Tennessee, and Vandy (please - Vandy lost to Duke) are all weak this year. This hasn’t been the case in the past, but this year it’s the truth.
The ACC has no really good teams, a bunch (10)of pretty good teams and only 2 teams that can be considered crap. The SEC has 2 really good teams, about 4 pretty good teams and 6 crap teams.

As Ben Franklin once stated “There are lies, damn lies, and statistics” the latter of which is the easiest to manipulate for one’s own purposes.
FYI…you might want to throw out terms such as standard deviation, t test, levels of confidence, central limit theorem, etc. to make yourself appear more intelligent as this appears to be the method to the madness. You do recognize these terms, yes? Or did you not make it to your 3rd year to take Probability & Statistics? Were you able to pass calculus (the first three) when you transferred to Southern Poly? Please explain to me exactly how “any of 5 SEC teams would win the ACC hands down”.
I’ll give you Bama and Florida, but Georgia, LSU and Vandy would not make it through the ACC unscathed.
The same Georgia team that has struggled to beat Auburn, Kentucky and Vandy and has been blown out on the big stage is a good team, but not the great team they are supposed to be. LSU gave up 50+ points in two losses, struggled to beat Auburn and Ms St (a team Ga Tech blew out with their 2nd string QB) and almost lost to Troy Saturday night. Vandy lost to the worst team in the ACC…at home.
The SEC is a very good conference because of the two powerhouse teams at the top. Below Bama and Florida, the rest of the conference is down. Stack all 12 teams up top to bottom and have them play (like they do in Bball) and the ACC and SEC would be very close.

One game at a time. The AJC and other media outlets hyped the Dawgs so now a 9-2 season so far seems to be bad. Miami will have an extremely tough defense with speed. We need to play up to our potential.

You totally crack me up!! That so called “Septic Tank of the South” was recently voted one of the best on Campus Stadiums in the nation. Try again Tool! Look forward to 8 in a row.
Carpet commercial? Is that the best you can do? Go after a fine Christian man if it makes you feel good. i don’t go after your coach. I actually like CPJ. He’s good for your team. I’m just having fun throwing jabs at a rival.

Here we go again. Even with mouths running at warp speed, the mites know deep down that once again they will lose to UGA. As sure as the sun rises in the east, Tech will find a way to lose this game. When it comes to UGA it’s always choke time for the trade schoolers. How does it feel to walk around 24/7, 365 days a year knowing that your mediocre football team wears a red and black choke collar.

Actually, I think the septic tank now runs under the tek campus. At least that’s what I read in the ajc a couple of weeks ago about Atlanta’s new sewage runoff pipelines.

Tech will beat Miami though Miami is helped that it did not have to play last weekend and is rested as we will be. I think the cold weather will favor us too. Our season will be decided by two fumbles, but we got lucky with one against FSU. The only game we got beat out and out was Carolina.

Accstinks actually here at our “trade” school we take prob stat in our second year. Only people from Alabama take in their third, and of course people from UGA.

Thanks again for all the garbage from the UGA fans that never attended UGA. They are so lost with how average their team is that all they can do is write garbage about the school they could only dream of getting into. They T.D. by UGA and now they want to spew about GT. Get a life people. You have zero connection to UGA and the word WE should never come out of your mouths.
If you guys want to know the truth about the ACC and SEC belly up and have a conversation with some of the men who actually played. I can promise you that neither side will have much neg to say about any D-1 team.
The ACC is a solid conf and the SEC dissapointed this year. Get over it! FL is the only great team in the conf this year.
Just enjoy the games and at the end of the year the truth will come out as always. Unless your Pres wants to change the BCS after the fact!

“No depth” was true of our 1990 National Champions, but Shawn Jones was able to stay healthy. Now, with Josh Nesbitt ailing, and others out, or at half-speed as well, the old fear has gripped me again. MAYBE we can beat Miami, but the good Lord is going to have make us glad, with some intercepted passes, recovered fumbles, dropped punts, stupid penalties, etc., all inflicted on the Hurricanes.

The TV folks gave us a break by scheduling the start of the GT-UGA game at noon. That way the game will be over by 3:30pm and we can get out of that cesspool before the sun goes down. Nobody should have to be in Athens, GA after dark.

I agree with some of your points, and yes i also think SEC is overrated this year and is not as strong as was thought to be, don’t see your reasoning though as to Florida being the only powerful team in the SEC. Nick Saban and his Alabama team looks pretty convincing.
GT GRAD
SEC vs ACC you seem upset about media not giving any respect to ACC. Naturally the media is going to go with the conference that has a better record of win’s vs losses. ACC has spent most of the year beating up on each other therefore, a lot of 3 loss teams that don’t get the recognition they should, (just my opinion not much worth to it.
Lots of depending on other teams losses to put you into the ACC championship game this year. Odds are probally better on beating the dawgs than the championship game working out for you. Should be a good game this year, If Tech can stop the pass and no turnovers good chance of winning. WE haven’t had much luck stopping a mobile QB all year so we’ll see.
Good luck on making it into that ACC CG.

I work in NC and had to hear about the Tarheels all week until they lost to Md, thank God. Yes, I do believe that GT can beat Miami, just like they have the last 3 yrs and especially if some of our top players return. Clemson is capable of beating Va and Va (because Al Groh’s job will be on the line) can beat Va Tech. And yes NC St could beat NC whose no better than Wake. (NC St also came on strong at the end of last season as well) But if we could at least beat Miami for the 4th straight yr, I would be elated. GO JACKETS

fast defense actually seem to give the advantage to tech because they tend to over pursue
its more of the power defense that is hard on us so i think well move the ball
the D needs to get the swag back tho its had 3 bad outtings in a row (although UNC game was not their fault)

How can our league stink? Look at the rivals 120 power poll, starting at 22, we have 6 teams to 29, all are 7-3 or 7-2, all right there. The only bad thing for the league is that Clemson started as 9th in the US, then fell down fast and are still 6-4. Va Tech was ranked too, now they are 6-4. So I’d say the league is in great shape with teams playing above the predictions. A sign of a healthy league. No way does tech or anyone in the Coastal deserve to go to Tampa with 3 losses, but that might just do it.

Some of this stuff is amusing.
Tech fans will call us average…7-5 is the definition of average, not 10-2….i dont care what the expectations for the teams were at the beginning. I know our season has been disappointing, and I know yours went better than expected, but 7-5 is still average.
I liked the Troy-LSU game as part of the proof that the SEC is worse than the ACC. How about a 10-7 Tech-Gardner Webb game? a 35-28 UNC-James Madison game?
As well as 1-9 in BCS games. This is will also be the 3rd straight year the BCS champion will be from the SEC. Ya’ll can stay in your conference of 3 loss first place teams and 50,000 seat stadiums…coming to Athens every other year gives you Techies a taste of what real noise and fans are like. When you sell out your stadium in a non-UGA home game year, please come back to me.
If the ACC were so exciting, games would be sold out.

With all the acc’s “balanced” teams maybe, just maybe they will not lay another 2-6 egg like they did this past year in the bowls. By the way….SEC went 7-2 and claimed a NC. I am sure it will not turn out like that this year since Sagarin rankings (or maybe we could find some rankings in the National Enquirer) says the acc is the 2nd best conference. LMAO!!Again…

Sure UGA will be picked over Tech but if Tech wins it won’t mean much because the SEC is 3rd rate this season. Two very fine teams propped up by 10 poor-to-good teams. Youll come down to earth after the beating that’s coming from the Big 12 Champ. When U Meyer and N Saban are ready to move up to the next level they’ll be interviewing Texas or Texas Tech or Oklahoma or Ok State or Missouri. CMR is not ready to interview.

“They better spend some time on how to keep Stafford off his back as well as learning how to defend the option.”
UGA ranks 18th in NCAA FBS as far as sacks allowed. That’s with a makeshift OL. I think they know how to keep #7 off his back. UGA is 14th in NCAA FBS in rushing defense.
