First impressions
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There was no TV coverage of Tech’s basketball season opener. Here’s what you missed if you didn’t make it down to AMC.
Gani Lawal came out possessed: 18 points, 9 boards in the first half.
Moe Miller set a career high with 10 assists, really pushed the tempo and ended up with 17 points.
Freshman Iman Shumpert looked good until he cramped up in the second half. He might not be great at any one thing, yet, but he is really good at everything: ballhandling, passing, rebounding, shooting.
Lance Storrs displayed a nice stroke, hitting 3 of 4 from behind the arc. (This after going 4 of 24 from distance as a freshman).
Brad Sheehan doubled his previous career high by going for 10 points.
Zack Peacock had a quiet 14, most coming late. He was one of three players with three turnovers (Alade Aminu, Miller).
Tech committed 13 turnovers. Because it was such a problem last year, the team has set a goal of 12 turnovers or less each game.
The defense held Winston-Salem State to 26 percent shooting.
One big change from last year — Lawal has put on 20 pounds, he’s 233. And his offensive game has expanded.
“He has been working on his ability to create easy baskets for himself instead of banging with people down low all of the time,” CPH said. “He is developing a nice jump hook and a real nice turnaround jump shot…He is also learning how to use the glass really well.”
He showed that early, banking one in from each side of the lane.
CPH on Storrs’ effort: “He’s been a very good player for a while, but last year may have struggled with the adjustment to the college game. He struggled with his confidence a little bit, but I can see it starting to come back up.”
And on Moe Miller: “In the first half, he was pressing a little bit offensively in terms of his shot. He did distribute the ball nicely. He did a nice job in the second half of attacking the high paint and getting those pull-up jump shots. Both he and Iman did a tremendous job in the first half of rebounding.”
It’s hard to read anything into a game like this. Winston-Salem State has some quickness and size, but the difference in skill level was dramatic. The Jackets did what they were supposed to do: blow the Rams out.
It was definitely a better night than last year’s opener, the 9-point loss to UNC-Greensboro.
One thing was clear: the Jackets are at their best when they’re rebounding and running. Miller and Shumpert both can push the ball, and the forwards can really fill the lanes.
What did you think of Tech’s performance in the opener?

My first impression is that there won’t be many Tickle Piles after basketball games this year. We’ll have to get our stimulation from another source but we’re use to that.

PLEASE DO US ALL A FAVOR AND REMOVE yellowblood “ticklepile” FROM POSTING ON AJC BLOGS.
You have e-mail addresses on file; you can capture IP addresses. The AJC claims to be monitoring your blogs. It’s time to put up or shut up…
If you aren’t willing to block him, then how about giving us HIS e-mail address and letting US bug him for a while?

Or, perhaps, Larry, it is someone from the AJC, such as yourself, who is actually yellowblood, who is making these offensive posts?

Larry and AJC, Everyone lashes out on blogs occasionally, but allowing this guy to consistantly spew this low class dribble is a pathetic reflection on the AJC. As Glenn put it, “put up or shut up…”
Maybe you actually DO like it. Sad…

It is mind blowing how yellowblood is allowed to post on seemingly every blog, yet the blogs are supposedly monitored. The only logical conclusions are:
Either way…pathetic.

Peacock has to cut down on the 3 point shot. He isn’t a good shooter and doesn’t need to be shooting from the corner so much. If we can stay out of foul trouble and not count on the walk ons to play 10 minutes a game, we should be able to win 12-14 games this year. Hewitt will probably save his job with next year’s recruting class and if he misses the NIT for the third straight year with that group, he will be gone.

Would I like to see yellowblood gone? Sure. But it really is not that hard to ignore his spewings. You know when you see his tag not to read the blog.
If the AJC can get rid of this nonsense, this would be very commendable, but we really should be able to ignore the immature blogs.

The funny thing with yellowblood is the double standard the AJC sets. In response to yellowbloods message, I posted a similar message in the UGA blog and the AJC blocked my address and removed my post.
AJC has already showed its colors, which is one reason why I stopped subscribing to the paper.

WHERE CAN I LISTEN TO THE GAME OVER THE INTERNET?

My impression? It’s going to be a long season.
The only player that boxed out an opponent on the boards was Storrs. There was almost zero ball movement in the half court game. It took until the very end before we saw a cut backdoor to Sheehan. Miller is telegraphing his passes and his only reliable move is the pull up jumper when he’s driving.
This team still seems completely lost on offense. I hope I’m wrong.

hewitt doesn’t know how to coach half court offense. The only reason we had a successful half court offense in 03 and 04 is b/c our PG was running the show on and off the court.
But gotta believe that Miller has progressed and as long as we can keep turnovers under 12 a game, we’ll be competitive and maybe even make a 3rd rnd run into the tourney. We have the athletes!! Make no mistake.

Hey GT90… I understand where you are coming from… However, I think you are wrong.
In college basketball (especially ACC) a PG is THE most critical part of the game. Tech has been ridiculously unlucky in the sense that PG’s we thought would stay around a few years did not. When Crittenton (whom we, as a lot others, thought would stick around 3-4 years) drafted, our dependable PG Zam Frderick transferred. Then surprisingly, Crittenton drafted in the first round. Basically, we did not have a PG for more than 1 year for almost 4 years. That has hurt us more than anything else.
Tech has not played great recently. However, a lot of that is because our coaching has improved our players more than they were expected to (e.g. Crittenton)…

Besides a mythical “tickle pile” is a lot better than a real arrest, which is what you are likely to get if you go to UGA…

It does NOT surprise me that here we are with the Football Season down to the UGA game, and even before the kickoff, Tech’s blog changes to some other sport UGA will beat Tech at yet again as always.
Georgia Tech doesn’t deserve to play in a bowl game because Georgia Tech had a sorry easy cupcake schedule in the America’s Cupcake Conference and beat no ranked team all season long.
As a matter of fact, Georgia Tech has not even played a ranked team in college football all season long.
Run-of-the-mill Georgia Tech plays Thursday night against unranked run-of-the-mill Miami of Florida.
Mediocrity is all Georgia Tech has to show for the entire 2008 season.
Choke is all any team in the ACC has done all season long, especially Georgia Tech.
Every discussion of the BCS Bowl Games this season has centered around the fact that Southern California has no hope of making it the National Championship Game over there in the land of fruit and nuts otherwise known as the PAC-1.
At least they have 1 team.
ACC certainly does not.
Meanwhile The SEC, with 3 teams ranked in the Top 10, clearly will see the SEC Championship Game Winner play in the BCS Mythical National Championship Game. The SEC has Won the Last 2 and 3 of the Last 5 National Championship Title BCS Bowl Games.
With TV ratings on decline throughout the ACC and the BCS overall, The SEC has set the Record for TV Ratings yet again this season. It is the 23rd consecutive season that The SEC has led the nation in Attendance. 3 million more than the PAC-1, 2 million more than the Big XII and ACC, and over 6 million total attendance to The SEC games once again this season.
Florida State will surely drop out of the Top 25 today, as will North Carolina, and if the ACC – as a block – votes for Maryland to get in the Top 25, Georgia Tech did not play Maryland.

As if the In-Conference foes of Georgia Tech don’t suck enough…
Tech’s out of conference opponents are Jacksonville State, Duke, Gardner-Webb, Mississippi State, and now…
Wait for it, Top 10 BCS Ranked UGA coming up after the Miami of Florida game Thursday night.
And, of course, to make matters worse, Georgia Tech has this “game” this week while UGA sits there practicing all week this week for the game against Georgia Tech, when the game isn’t until next week.
And, if all that isn’t bad enough, Georgia Tech travels to Athens this year.
10-26-1 Georgia Tech is at Sanford Stadium.
1991 to 1997 UGA Beat Tech 7 consecutive games.
2001-2007 UGA has Beat Tech 7 Consecutive games, and counting.
36-59-5 Georgia Tech all-time against The University of Georgia, UGA.
Gag, Georgia Tech and the America’s Cupcake Conference, ACC, gag.
Grant Field, named Grant Field in downtown Atlanta named for Rising from the Ashes when Grant was the Commander in Chief of the Union Army has been like a Tupperware Party yet again all season long.
The Buffoonery of Georgia Tech has included Losses mind you to unranked Virginia, unranked North Carolina and unranked Virginia Tech. All 3 of those teams Lost this week, for example.
Georgia Tech avoided a similar fate itself this week.
By not playing.
Thank God.
But, it is only a brief reprise, as with this snoring season for Georgia Tech starting out slowly and then fizzling out all together, takes on Top 10 BCS UGA.
And, if you thought the Georgia Tech football season has been boring so far, now that Tech finally plays 1 ranked opponent all season long – UGA - It is going to be ugly.

Well what do you know?
BuLLdawg showed back up. Guess you must be done licking your wounds. You guys were real impressive yesterday. Really pounded Auburn. That’s the same Auburn that beat Miss State 3-2 right?
What time does Stafford have to be at the Down Town Athletic club?
This just in, Georgia just got another personal foul called against them.

Hmm… BuLLdawg. You mentioned that Tech hasn’t played a ranked team all year. Well, UGA has only beaten 1 team that will be in the rankings after this week (LSU). And they got blown out by the other two teams. (If you are including the rankings of the teams in the week that the two teams played, then Tech has just as many as UGA - Florida St., UNC, Virginia Tech). So, if Tech is such a sorry team as you say, then UGA must not be very far behind.
UGA sure played some competitive games against Vandy, Kentucky, and Auburn. Hmm.. Vandy lost to Duke, and Kentucky and Auburn lost to Vandy. Did UGA blow anyone in the SEC out? LOL, Tech beat an SEC team by a bigger margin that UGA did! (Miss St.)
Not saying Tech will beat UGA, but I do think that you need to take your UGA rose colored glasses off. UGA has played terrible this year, and it sure must sting after the National Title hopes that UGA had. And Tech very much has a chance against UGA. Wouldn’t that sting?

Impressive ?
You mean like Top 10 BCS Rankings Georgia Bulldogs at 9-2 playing the Number 1 Strength of Schedule ?
You mean like beating LSU who will be 10-3 and like beating South Carolina who will be 9-4 ?
You mean like beating Georgia Tech 7 Consecutive Games, just like we did 1991 to 1997 ?

I note that you AGREE with me JASON (Are you a redhead, as every Jason I ever met is a carrot top.) that Georgia beat BCS Number 19 LSU on the road at their house, and that GEORGIA TECH HAS NOT BEAT ANY BCS TOP 25 TEAM.
Now, you play us.
Best of luck.
Why don’t you discuss the fact that Paul Johnson has NEVER IN HIS LIFETIME EVER FACED A TEAM ranked in the BCS Top 19 ?
Face it
Paul Johnson and the Georgia Tech yellowjackets are the red-headed step child in this state and always will be.

Jason, I never said UGA with the Number 1 Official NCAA Strength of Schedule this season would win the national championship. In fact, I NEVER said ANYTHING BUT this is a 2-Loss Season for UGA.
I see that you agree that the best team Georgia Tech has played this season SO FAR is North Carolina who probably will NOT BE RANKED this afternoon, while Georgia may have Lost 2 against # 1 Alabama and Number 3 Florida, but we BEAT LSU at their house and they are NUMBER 19.
Number 19 is higher than ANY team on Tech’s schedule…
until you play us in our next game. Yeah, it’s been real sad for UGA this season BCS Elgible as we ALREADY ARE at 9-2 in the BCS Top 10.

BuLLcrap, you must not have heard that LSU got their azzes handed to them last night by TROY. Yeah, TROY. A couple of post ago you mentioned UGA and their #1 schedule. That was before the season started when Auburn was a top ten team. Also, Tennessee was in the top fifteen. Arizona state was supposed to have a winning season. Get real man!! You can’t keep tooting that horn. Also, to say the GT hasn’t played anybody in the top 25 is complete crap! FSU was #16 and UNC was up there too. If it wasn’t for phantom pass interference call against Auburn you guys would have gone down. You know the call I’m referring to.

Hey little bullpuppy you must be kidding about Ugag having the #1 toughest schedule in the nation. Who decided that, Dince Vooley. Let’s just look at that tough schedule - GSU, .500 at their own level, one of those directional schools (big whoopee) - ASU, about .500 a real threat, then the big bad sec - Carolina, whipped by every descent team they play - Auburn, couldn’t score agaainst Cedar Shoals, Vandy just got back to .500 and lost to Duke who’s in last place in the ACC - LSwho that’s only ranked b/c they’re in the sec (really who have they beat this year)- Tenn another terrible team from the sec, Kentucky enough said - that leaves Fla and Bama and the pups didn’t even compete. Richt and Co. should be embarrassed to even claim that one yesterday. A phantom inteference one way and then ugag’s db does everything but tackle the Auburn receiver in the end zone and no call in the last 20 seconds. It’s funny how you sec’ers use the company line well we’re the sec and we just beat up on each other. What a laugh. Eight of those teams are terrible, ugag is pretty good, and LSwho is marginal. Fla might beat FSU but in the other 2 inter-state games the ACC will go 2 and oh.

did you know we refer to you as our pet troll on the other blogs?
we wondered where you went to after 49-10. lmao.
we thought maybe we hurt your feelings because the whole nation was cheering for the gators each time they scored. AND the jackets cheered loudest of all.
49-10.
the dogs remind me of ms ratchett in ‘one flew over the cuckoos nest’. each time jack nickelson choked her the inmates cheered. just like the dogs.
i just realized something. the only difference between mark richt and jim donnan is chan gailey.
richt and donnon both recruited top 5 classes every year. both couldnt win the big games. both consistantly finished in the middle of the sec pack. both couldnt beat fla.
the only difference was with gailey as our coach ugag always had one more win per year.
well that will change and soon. ugag will be back to being our uggly AND stupid stepbrother.
btw…. what is it with the ugag cheerleaders and makeup? with all the makeup they wear it is a wonder they can keep their eye lids open.
of course we all know that beauty is only skin deep and in the case of ugag cheerleaders one need look no further than below that first layer of thick makeup to really see what uggly looks like.
49-10 have a nice day

well i guess duke didnt get the message regarding that tuff sec.
duke which is in LAST place in the acc beat a good middle of the pack sec team in vandy…. AT VANDY.
you cant cherry pick this one away. other than fla and bama the sec is no better than the mid tier portion of the big ten. the acc is superior and will show it over the next few weeks and the bowls.
re the ugag cheerleader and makeup…. its a good thing they cant open their eyes on dates cause they would have to see what their date looks like.ewhhh.

Don’t think the acc is the laughing stock of college football (even more so than the small 11)….the headlines for Yahoo College Football reads “What did our experts learn in Week 12? The ACC is so bad it should be left out of the BCS…..but watching the race sure is fun.” I suppose it is fun like going to a car race to see a wreck. Face it you girls are laughing stock….My arse has already been laughed off….
