Canes do Tech a favor

Did you catch Miami’s 16-14 win over Virginia Tech last night?

If you did, you saw a swarming Hurricanes defense Georgia Tech will have to deal with next Thursday. That defense, which ranked 15th nationally coming into the game, is the biggest reason Miami has won five straight.

But first things first. Miami’s win boosted Georgia Tech’s chances to win the ACC’s Coastal Division. A lot of things still have to happen, including Georgia Tech beating Miami next week. (And Miami is now 13-1 in Thursday night ESPN games).

Tech needs another domino to fall Saturday. If North Carolina loses at Maryland, Tech’s chances keep improving. It’s still a longshot, but hey, anything is possible in the ACC. As of now UNC controls its own destiny in the Coastal.

I was really impressed with the speed and discipline of the Miami defense, as were the ESPN announcers. Defensive end Marcus Robinson, one of 11 true freshmen on Miami’s two-deep, had three of the Canes’ six sacks. Allen Bailey got the last one, corraling Tyrod Taylor on 4th down to seal the win.

And the run defense? VT’s Darren Evans ran for a school-record 253 yards last week against Maryland. He gained 43 yards on 17 carries last night.

Virginia Tech wasted some chances, most notably when that freshman receiver got behind the secondary and dropped a sure touchdown. But overall the Hokies’ offense looked overmatched by Miami’s D.

To move the ball effectively next Thursday, the Jackets will have to be a lot sharper than they were at North Carolina.

Were you as impressed as I was by Miami’s D? Do you think Tech can make enough plays to win?

Miami’s defense is awfully fast. That could really mess up our offense. But if we can keep them from the big play(s) (and obviously, hold down the turnovers and penalties) we can beat those guys. I hope that our beat up guys get well. Go Jackets.

As always, if we execute, we’ll be fine. Our O is as young as their D, so the key will be who executes ..not just in turnovers, but on every play with blocking assigments etc. If we execute, I am not worried. We executed against some other pretty good defenses and scored (FSU, for example).

By ArkyTech

Actually, our offense has done well against fast defenses (see FSU). We’ve struggled against power defenses (see UVA and UNC). I like our chance to move the ball against Miami and Georgia….if we can get anything from our battered O line.

Miami hasn’t seen CPJ’s Triple Option yet. The key is for Tech to get off to a quick start with some early scores and thereby make it difficult for Miami to come from behind. The second half should belong to the Jackets with the support of the crowd. A healthy Josh Nesbitt is a must!

This year Miami doesn’t blow anyone out and, fortunately, they don’t get blown out. So I expect a close game that is still in doubt in the 4th. Unless Tech breaks the trend and scores often. I don’t see UM scoring often. The offense just isn’t consistent enough yet.

Unless we play better than we have since the GW game we are not going to beat UM. I don’t understand why some here are so fired up about our new coach. Our season seems vaguely familiar. A lot of sound and fury but a similar record.

A lot of doom and gloom from you, sugar jacket. We’ve got a new coach, new offense, and a young team, but we’ve still won seven games with two to go, surpassing all preseason expectations. This team has already won as many games in its first year that it did in all but one of Chan Gailey’s years. And take a look at Paul Johnson’s record at other schools - there was a definite improvement from the first year to the second year (especially at Navy) that stuck. Johnson is a great coach and winning 7 games in a transition year that changed almost everything proves it. For comparison, take a look at how well Rich Rodriguez is doing in Michigan. (Hint: not so well.)

Let me tell sugar why most of us are fired up about CPJ. We have one of the youngest D-1 teams in the nation with the potential to be one of the best in a couple of years. He is a true college coach with a proven record of winning, great motivational skills, and willing to take the blame if he feels he let us or his team down. In short he is what GaTech has been needing since O’Learys departure. He is in the first year of what I hope will be a long and very successful tenure. If we judged every coach on first season entirely we would surely be minus a NC in 1990 or do you remember that far back? OK now I feel better. THWG

Demaryius Thomas, Corey Earls and Roddy Jones are going to be key against Miami. VT’s receivers had chances and couldn’t hang on to the ball. Without success moving the ball in the air, Miami was able to play really aggressively up front.

Although Miami’s D is fast getting to the edge, the question is will they be disciplined enough to defend the triple option.

Our D is also going to have to play really disciplined up front. Marve had several scrambles and planned runs that really hurt VT.

Should be another hard fought, close game, but I like the Jackets to bounce back strong.

I think people need to get off ANY expectation of a possible Division shot. We had it….we blew it…but NOT all is lost here. Yeah, those loses sucked big time but hey, we ARE the youngest team in the ACC and for a first year coach, new offense and not very many pieces in the RIGHT place for PJ to work with, I think he’s done a hell of a job! We still have A LOT to play for…beat UGA (yes, it’s possible-they have their own problems in athens right now), go to a bowl game THIS side of the Mississippi and have a 9 possibly 10 win season!! So chins up everybody. Yeah were not where we could be but we ARE where the college f-ball nation NEVER expected us to be this year. PJ COACH OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!! THWG!!! Yeahm C’ Mon

Attention Blog Manager:

You obviously know the Email address for “Yellowblood”………..simple block his access to all AJC Blogs and make a statement on a few blogs indicating you have permanently banned him for innapropriate and annoying posts. When he starts blogging using a different E-mail addresses, simply block his new E-mail addresses as well. Eventually, the idiot will either grow up or go away for good!

To Yellowblood: Get counseling……you must be a miserable person and I am sure no one really likes to spend time with you. I am so concerned about all the injuries. Our best O-lineman, Gardner gone, now Vance Richards on defense, and so many others. If Word-Daniels is back and 100%, that will help.

On the other hand, after a down game against UNC, I expect the Jackets to rebound against the Canes. Tech usually plays well on Thursday night ESPN games.

Let’s all light a candle and pray for no bad calls by the refs.

By Larry Hoffman

November 14, 2008 11:48 AM | Link to this

Tech can win only if they open up with a good passing attack. If they depend almost entirely on the run as fast as Miami is, they will stack the defense to stop the run and it will be a long night for Tech.

Larry Hoffman, If teams stack 8-9 in the box, that is when the pass to Thomas or any other receiver goes for 6. That is the beauty of the passing game under CPJ. We test the patience of the necessity for the defense to play assignment football. You think this Miami team, which is about as young as Tech, will be disciplined enough to stick to their assignments. I don’t have that much faith in players with that much inexperience. Are we going to get stuffed a lot…yes. Will we have 2-3 “big” running plays…yes. When that happens they will stuff more players in the box and then the pass is WIDE open! No turnovers=long night for Miami’s defense.

It’ll come down to turnovers again, as Michael Johnson said early in the season, the only ACC team that can beat Georgia Tech is itself, as the losses thus far prove. As PJ points out, the young OL has got to do a better job of protecting Nesbitt/Shaw, else the passing game is minimized, in turn negating the running game.

? We’ve lost to VA Tech, UVA and UNC. We have 3 ACC losses. If we beat Miami, we would still need those 3 teams to end up with 4 losses! UNC would need to lose twice and UVA and VT would need to lose 1 more time. And, UNC plays Md, NC St and Duke. I only see possibly 1 loss there. Not going to even remotely happen. Lets just beat UGA. I think that would be a much greater reason to celebrate then 3 or 4 other schools losing a bunch of games so we can back into the ACC Championship game.

Larry, it’s pure foolishness to even THINK about being back in the Division race. We’ve had two legitimate shots to control our own fate and tripped on our own feet both times (UVA and UNC).

Good news is that Miami’s offense looks imminently stoppable. 1 TD and 3 FGs last night. Their TD drive was aided by a VT penalty when they were stopped. 2 of the 3 FGs were on short field opportunities.

Bad news is that their defense looks really tough. Looking back over the season records, they’ve had more instances of actually scoring a substantial number of points in a game.

Once again, the game will likely hinge on the turnover margin. With our offense, we simply cannot overcome giving the other team easy points.

See you at Grant Field!!!

Miami’s D really looks. They have really good team speed and for their youth actually seem to play disciplined. One thing to keep in mind from last night is that other than last week VPI hasn’t been an offensive machine. Playing disciplined against a true option team is a whole different story and Miami’s youth could hurt them. The key to next Thursday night is TECH’s offensive line. They have to get out in the lanes to head off the LB’s trying to get wide and will have to move their feet when we pass. The passing won’t matter either way if we can’t control the DT’s and ILB’s. I do think the 5 extra days of rest will do wonders for us. I don’t care how much UNC got to prepare for our O, the difference in that game was UNC was a more rested team than TECH.

ACC Stinks,

How about this, the SEC Stinks!!

The only reason Alabama is ranked #1 is they haven’t played anyone and won’t paly anyone until the SECCG. The SEC West is a complete joke. LSU is the 2nd best team and is not very good, behind them is Ole Miss, that’s right OLE MISS, the same team a crappy (in your estimation) ACC team beat. Auburn, Miss St and Arkansas are all train wrecks. Alabama has built it’s rep totally on 2 wins; against an overrated Clemson (probably will finish around 10th in the ACC) and an overrated UGA team.

The SEC has three teams that are decent, the rest stink. Vandy will have a winning record in the SEC, yet lost to the worst ACC team.

The SEC is the greatest college football conference in the history of the world, just ask those two guys on the “Buck & Buffoon” show. Oh, the Sagarin ratings don’t know anything, those idiots have 1.Big 12 2.ACC 3.SEC. Now, I want know how a very young Miami defense held the all powerful SEC Gators to their lowest point total of the season. It happened in the second week of the season, when Miami’s true freshmen were just learning. Miami gave up 3 TD’s to the mighty Gators and 2 of the Gators’ points came by safety. Oh yeh, FLA tacked on a “we’ll show you” FG with 25 seconds to go. All of FLA’s SEC opponents have given up more points to the Gators than a young Miami(ACC) team did. One SEC team even gave up 49 to the Gators. You know, maybe the Sagarin pays attention to stuff like that.

bb,

You are correct in the fact that The Tide hasn’t played anyone outside of the SEC….that farm school called clumpson was picked to win the acc until the beatdown was applied. Your supposed best team gets its azz handed to it by The Tide. Other beatdowns include the #10 team in the BCS as well as the #17 team in the BCS. Tell me again of any school in the acc with that record. #1 is as good as it gets…something the acc would not know about. If LSU is not very good what does that say about acc who’s best team is ranked right there with ‘em?

I KNEW El Gato was a miami fan. LMFAO!!! I could smell your f@ggot hair gel, cologne, s**, wetback stench from here! Jesus man. Your entire fan base is garbage. So i guess the 5,000 of you coming to the game will all be riding in 50 Cutlass Supremes? Will your tires be wider than your fenders? Spics… too, too funny. A s** “u” fan talking about green cards…thats priceless. Will you be wearing your fake gold cross necklace for the game next week? Or will you be too busy mowing lawns to make it to the game? A miami fan. What a joke. Who in their right mind would claim to be a wetback, and a miami fan???????????? HAHAHAHAHHA

ACC Stinks,

You clearly don’t know what you’re taling about. Clemson OWNS the series vs Carolina 64-37-4; Clemson is 8-2 vs Carolina over the past 10 years!

So I guess by that standard UGA and GT are ‘about even’ too.

Please do your research before you post something and look like an ignorant fool.

GT has youngest offense in ACC
Miami has youngest defense in ACC

Miami won’t be disciplined enough to fill the gaps…Too many young, over zealous, speed gonzalezes who will overshoot and I honestly think both Dwyer and Jones (if he can hold on to the ball) have 100+ games each.

This is not wishful thinking. Its common sense. Miss State was prime example. Very quick, young, defense who overshot and played undisciplined. Got blown out of B Dodd.

Somewhere there are a bunch of horse fronts walking around on two legs, because there is certainly a surplus of horse’s rears here.

I love college football and Georgia Tech, but thank goodness there is more to my life than that.

With 25,000 comedians already unemployed, I don’t think there is much hope for most of the posters here.

Great blogs. The CPJ era is going to be a plus as this offense develops and recruiting keeps going well. The problem is the competition now is going to get a lot tougher. UNC is no longer the UNC we have been playing for 10 years, they have Butch Davis who coached the Hurricanes so well. Miami is started to resemble the old Miami talent in recruiting and on defense. One or two years they could be dominant. UVA is always tough. VT is VT and even Duke has a big time coach. There will be no easy game in the ACC in the future it appears. So in considering records consider the strength of the schedule. Win out would be great considering how tough the schedule is starting to appear inside the ACC. We need to take them one at a time and keep trying to get better.

ACC STINKS-

LSU and UGA looked good today. LSU had to come back on Troy in Death Valley at night in the 4th. Thats great man. The announcers even said it was a great comeback for LSU. Thats sad when you think about it. And UGA looked great barely beating Auburn, on a gift from the refs, who will not be bowl eligible this year. I reiterate to you for everyone else that history does NOT matter. The SEC is not good this year. Florida and Alabama are all you have and ALabama will be exposed by Florida. If you match them up from top to bottom the ACC wins more games.

By what the hell?

You techies are idiots. Auburn would go undefeated in the ACC because it is the JOKE of college football. Any ACC team that played in the SEC would be at the bottom of the division. They would may Tenn. look good, which is really hard to do.

Every ACC team need to be relegated to DI-AA, and still be second place to App. State.

By DCJacket

November 16, 2008 3:39 PM | Link to this

Okay Larry, we get it, the ACC is a joke. I suppose that is why the ACC currently has more active players in the NFL than any other conference, including your beloved SEC.

Is it possible that the ACC has more parity than any other conference and is solid top to bottom? More than possible. I’ll bet your Fantasy Football Team rules, since you obviously don’t dwell in reality.

Enough of this SEC-ACC-U(sic)GA BS.

GT can win on Thursday. But they must get the running game started early and hang on to the football. A big defensive take-away can seal the deal for Tech. I can only hope for the best the following weekend.

Sagarin: SEC is the fourth best conference Now that we are well into the midst of the conference schedules, it’s time to take an updated look at Jeff’s Sagarin’s Conference ratings.

The following are updated through October 27, 2008:

1 BIG 12 (78.18) 2 BIG TEN (77.24) 3 ATLANTIC COAST (76.97) 4 SOUTHEASTERN (76.54) 5 PAC-10 (74.33) 6 BIG EAST (73.44) 7 MOUNTAIN WEST (70.27) 8 I-A INDEPENDENTS (67.33) 9 WESTERN ATHLETIC (65.57) 10 MID-AMERICAN (65.18) 11 CONFERENCE USA (63.31) 12 SUN BELT (61.11)

A find a couple facets of the current rankings rather fascinating:

  • The SEC is the fourth best conference, top-to-bottom? Seriously? The SEC is 20-7 out-of-conference against DI-A teams this year. Granted, three of those seven losses are to the ACC, but… the ACC returned the favor in losing three to the SEC. Sagarin has three SEC teams in his top ten, but the ACC gets the slight nod when you contrast the middle and bottom of each conference, which makes sense when you consider that there are… like… forty-seven teams tied for first in the ACC.

  • Is another non-BCS blowout in the offing? Cinderella teams from the WAC (Boise State), Mountain West (Utah, TCU), MAC (Ball State), and C-USA (Tulsa) are all looking to qualify into a BCS bowl this year. Sagarin’s ratings would seem to indicate that their resumes might be lacking if and when they get to the big stage.

  • The BCS conferences are head-and-shoulders above the non-BCS conferences. The separation between the Big East and Mountain West is statically significant, and I don’t think we’ve seen any rankings that dispute that designation in the last four years.

Nuff said!! THWG

i think the UGA fans came to this blog because they got roasted too bad by the Fla and Bama fans on their own blog and bc they cant ever win a big game. I think they forget that their beloved coach used to be the 3rd string qb at Miami before he realized he would settle for a mid level team like uga where you lose 3 games a year and you are a hero. Back to the Tech-Mia which is what this blog is for. I am scared as a miami fan because our defenders do not wrap up when tackling and the corners arent very good at tackling. The only thing they have going for them is they are very fast and they like to strip the ball.
