Bowl talk

Last week, ESPN’s Mark Schlabach and Bruce Feldman each had Georgia Tech going to the Orange Bowl to play West Virginia out of the Big East.

The 28-7 loss at North Carolina knocked the Jackets down a few pegs. Now Feldman projects Tech will play Notre Dame in the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl, which is No. 3 on the nine ACC-affiliated bowls.

Schlabach dropped Tech further. He projects the Jackets will face Kentucky in the Dec. 31 Music City Bowl, No. 5 in the pecking order.

Scout.com says Tech will be going to Charlotte for the Dec. 27 Meineke Car Care Bowl, to play Cincinnati. In other words, Tech would be the 6th ACC team selected.

Finally, cbssportsline.com has the Jackets going to San Francisco to play Arizona in the Dec. 27 Emerald Bowl, No. 7 on the list.

Where do you think Tech will end up? Which bowls would excite the fan base, and which wouldn’t?

I think Tech should refuse a bid to the Emerald Bowl if we should fall that far. We’ve done our duty to the conference by traveling to the west for bowls over the last few years.

The lesser bowls in western time-zone are a disaster for us. Most studies show that it’s not an economic boon for the Athletic department. By the time you pay for travel and benefits for major donors, it’s either a wash or a loss. It’s not worth the extra few weeks that the coaches get to spend with the players.

The ACC has broken ties with the Boise bowl. They need to do the same with the San Francisco version. Fans are much more likely to travel to a bowl that’s within driving distance (or a short flight) from Atlanta (such as Jacksonville, Tampa, Charlotte, Nashville, Washington DC, Miami).

It just becomes embarrassing when we don’t have a representative following of fans.

The Gator Bowl is a ‘short’ drive and Tech fans support us there. Remember the 1998 Gator Bowl vs Notre Dame? The Chick-Fil-A Bowl has been a disaster. Wec have never won there. We send the fans but the team does not show up.

It’s also embarassing when or if we sell out our stadium, half of the stadium if filled with the other team’s fans. It is absoutely embarassing having a home game that sometimes could seem like an away game. You rich b******* that graduated from tech gets your butts in the seats, wear gold, and be loud.

Aim as high as possible now so we can aim even higher in the future. Condition some of the students and new fans to travel to these East Coast bowls and then wait for the bandwagon to start rolling. Given time and consistent achievement we’ll get to that elusive “next level.”

So don’t complain…just go and be loud.

Why do you think ND goes to good bowl games every year? It is because their fans will support them anywhere. If you want better bowls you have to either earn it by winning ACC or prove to the bowls that you will fill up the stands.

I hope the ACC sends another team to the Emerald bowl. Tech has paid its ACC dues. There is not a team in the ACC that will “travel well” to San Francisco in January. It is time for Tech to go to an ACC affliated bowl in the East. Another school needs to hold up the ACC flay in the West. I would rather play Navy in Washington than go to San Francisco in January. But, we take of Miami next week and the bowl location will take care of itself.

I think Tech fans would show up if it was the Chick-fil-A or Gator Bowl but anything less would doubtfully garner a crowd. Hope for the players sake we get to a decent bowl. They would’ve earned it. Same reason I agree with gtne80 about the Emerald Bowl. No good reason to reward our guys for what so far has been a damn good season, all things considered, by traveling to the other coast to play in a bowl that would probably feel more like an insult.

Speaking as a fan, depending on timing of other holiday plans, I’d drive to Jacksonville, Charlotte, or Nashville to attend a bowl game.

However, quite frankly, I won’t buy holiday-priced airline tickets and San Francisco hotel bills to fly across the country to see a crappy bowl game that I can watch on TV. I don’t think I’d travel to Boise, Idaho if I could go for free.

With all due respect to timthebrave, Notre Dame is an exception to virtually every rule regarding a fan base. Their representation as the primary Catholic school in the country gives them a built in fan base anywhere they go. They also get invited to bowl games because of the automatic promise of a decent TV rating for the same reason, they have a national following.

I rarely post on these blogs but I read them to get a laugh from all the ridiculous stuff posted. Do I want an east coast bowl for the Jackets, of course. But why would any bowl work? Extra practice. The best thing about a bowl, unless your playing for the National Championship, is the extra practice time. Our young team needs all the practice they can get. So the idiots who complain about where the bowl might be, aren’t true fans. They are what I called them. I am very proud of our team. Was I disappointed Saturday, of course. But they have exceeded all expectations and the future is very bright. Drad did a fantastic job of hiring Coach Johnson. I’ve been a season ticket holder for 30 years and the last time the atmosphere was this good was when Bobby Ross was our coach. Go Jackets. THWG

Unbelievably it’s still too early to try to figure which bowl we can go to. We must beat Miami to have a shot at anything decent. But there is still too many conference games for the rest of the league left, and the league is way too jumbled this year to predict anything. There is a realistic scenario where we end up tied with Miami, VT & UNC @ 5-3. Larry or anyone else, who goes to the CG if that happens. If we don’t make the CG then it becomes a beauty contest for the bowl selectin committees.

By CW

I’m with Kentucky Jacket, some of the post above are just ridiculous.

A bowl game, any bowl game, gives Coach Johnson and his staff 3-4 weeks of additional practice time with 75 FRESHMAN and SOPHOMORES to continue installing a complex offensive scheme.

Bowl games are also the ultimate bonus to the 18-22 year old student athletes. They receive swag bags from the bowl committees with iPods, watches etc. that are the only “gifts” they are allowed to accept under NCAA rules.

Obviously, Tech will go bowling this year, but it all depends on how well they bounce back against Miami and UGa. Personally, I’m more interested in who the opponent would be then the location. I’d much rather see a matchup against an SEC school so we get a chance to further the ACC record against that conference.

Based on what I’ve seen of Notre Dame this year, I think Tech would thrash them. Regardless of how bad ND is, they still get a national audience which would help strengthen recruiting.

I keep hearing the argument for “any” bowl based on the idea that the coaches get to spend all this valuable time with the kids preparing for next year.

I just don’t buy it.

By the time the team gets a little time off for finals, how much time do they really spend? Two weeks?

I think it’s over-rated and another smoke screen (i.e., BS). By the time spring practice (and fall practice) rolls around, how much of that two weeks of distracted practice in mid-December is actually retained?

I extra time in December is useless why bother with spring practice either. Heck let’s just suit up in August and go at it. What O’Leary used to do was dismiss the older/starter players from practice early and work with the young ones on TECH’s schemes b/c a lot of what they did from September to December was scout team. Any time you can get the young kids extra practice time it’s a good thing. Judging from our performances out west the last few times maybe we should have stayed home but maybe Coach Johnson will be able to get the players’ attention in a way Gailey didn’t seem able to. A holiday drive to Nashville, Charlotte, Jacksonville, or Orlando (Champs?) would be real nice.

Get healthy, rested, and win out. Build for next year and the next. Recruit some strong depth to rest the starters and fill in for the injured. Let this season take care of itself, just like when it started. Whatever bowl we get asked to, accept it, and let the young ones cut their teeth on it. It will pay off in the years to come. Born2Buzz — Very good question. I just did a quick look at it and VT advances.

Four-way tie among GT, VT, UNC and Miami at 5-3.

First tiebreaker is combined head-to-head record against those teams.

So Georgia Tech would be 1-2 in that scenario (losses to UNC and VT, assumes a win over Miami)

VT would be 2-1 (if Hokies lose to Miami. They’ve beaten GT and UNC).

Miami would be 1-2 (losses to UNC, GT)

And UNC would be 2-1.

So it would then go head-to-head between UNC and VT, with VT advancing to the ACC title game.

Any talk of skipping a bowl game, whether it’s in San Francisco or Rangoon, makes no sense. The players are still absorbing Paul Johnson’s system. The extra weeks of practice would be enormously valuable for the offense to find its rhythm.

But I’m a Georgia fan. You can skip all the minor bowl games you want.

By jacketexan

I think Tech should go to any bowl game they are invited to. The players have worked too hard to withhold that reward just because it might cost the athletic department money.

That being said, I think the fan base is invigorated way beyond anything that Chan ever accomplished. I would imagine that the fans will go to any bowl, but the western bowls are just too far away to get a good showing. The ACC needs to work harder at getting signed on with bowls in the east and midwest.

Thanks Larry. Hmmm, so unless there is some miracle we are not going to the CG. We will most likely finish in a tie with about 4 other teams in the conference @ 5-3. So again, it comes down who the bowl wants. We have a good track record for showing up at the Gator Bowl. Obviously the Gator or the one in Charlotte would be best. Music City would be just OK. Peach/Chickala would also be OK but I think the loser of the CG goes there.

Beat Miami and we should be OK. Beat UGA and they will be fighting for us.

Now that the CG is no longer in Jacksonville the Eat Mor Chikin bowl becomes more interesting. Before the ACC Champ went to Orange, second to Chikin because they had just played in Jax, and third to Gator. Since its is likely both Alabama and Florida will end up BCS, pickin for chikin could get interesting. LSU or Georgia? Don’t forget they have the Sugar Bowl as well.

Anyway, all this is speculation. What is fact is we have a helluva a coach, a great team, and high expectations for the finish of the season.

We need to (and will) accept whatever bowl we end up with an invite to. We have an obligation to our kids and to the ACC. There is a very different vibe now since our version of Jim Donnan has left, and I believe we have a reasonable shot at an east coast bowl if we win another game. Win both and you can expect either Chick or Gator. And that vibe includes a coach who understand that the UGA game is priority number 1. The players voted that as goal 1 over an ACC crown. Just as a side note - I believe that we will likely never see the inside of the stadium is Charlotte. That game was built to invite one of the four NC schools…..The Gator bowl has intrique since we would face Tenuta with ND ….

Read all articles and blogs related to college football daily, but rarely post…sometimes you guys just make it too easy!

You GT fans(so called fans…real fans put their money where their mouth is and truly back their team…that includes buying tickets and following your team…and since all you guys are so “intelligent” and make SOOOO much money…that should not be a problem) should get down on your knees and thank the football Gods that there is a blue rug bowl and emerald bowl. Other wise your bowl streak would have ended long ago!

Paid your duty to the ACC??? PLEASE!!! You went to the bowl you EARNED based on your conference standings!! If tied with another team or records are similar..the bowl REALLY looks at how the team’s fan base travels. Surely you “inteligent” people understand that????

Do you not think that all of college football did not notice that Altell stadium in Jax was not even half full when you guys played Weak Forest in the ACC championship game?

Do you think that they do not know that that GT recently sold 241 tickets to their bowl game???

GT’s football program, and especially it’s so called fan base are a joke…a laughing stock…there are div. 2 programs that travel better than you.

3 or 4 years ago you played at Duke…paid attendance was less than 12,000. Several high school teams in Ga. do better than that!!!

Every other year UGA fans buy GT season tickets….keep the UGA-GT tickets and throw the rest away!!! You can’t get on the AJC sports web site without seeing that stupid bee trying to hawk tickets…since you guys make so much money, why don’t you buy the tickets and give them to boy’s and girl’s club. To begin…

I love the direction the program appears headed especially if we had depth that a full 85 scholarships may give. But I have been a TECH fan far too long to put us in any of the top 5 Bowls unless we win out. One more loss would drop us to a probable 7 spot and two losses probably leads to playing Navy in Washington. Our lack of support to fill up our own stadium does not promote enough enthusiasm to get to one of the better bowls and the ACC allows bowls to choose teams lower in the standings as long as they are within one win of each other in the ACC standings. Thus a 5-3 Tech team could be replaced with a 4-4 Virginia team. How many times have we (TECH fans) saw that very thing happen???

TWA, You are right about our fan base. It disappoint me to no end that we can’t get more support at our games right now. Coach PJ called for a sell out at the UV game, and I bet we were 7000 short. I don’t know where the fans went from the G O days, but I know they are there. We just have to lite that fire again, and work on it. The fan’s at the games are the one’s that have been there through thick and thin, we just have to bring the one’s back that gave up through the CG years. Winning will to it!

The really stupid UGA bloggers are a little less annoying when the GT bloggers simply ignore them and do not respond or acknowlege their comments. The blogs would be so much better if people would be more respectful on both sides. I would like to see blogs with certain words or phrases automatically deleted or blogs which are managed closer with the stupid posts deleted. Both GT and UGA bloggers should show some self control and keep things civil. There are a few stupid GT bloggers who sometimes embarrass the GT brand and I know for a fact that several of the bloggers who claim to be GT fans are not GT fans; they are more than likely UGA fans trying to make GT fans look bad.

By the way, this probably the most negative blog I have ever posted regarding the ignorant/childish UGA bloggers. I have no idea why I justed wasted my time addressing this topic; I am certain none of this will change any time soon and most college football fans are too biased to even consider a point of view which differs from their own much less actually change their opinion. This is one area in life where facts seem to have little impact on many fans personal opinions.

UGA fans ragging us about ‘earning our bowl’ are factually wrong. Year after year we end up in a position like 3rd best, but we are passed over because we have a small fan base. You can say “it’s tough for you guys, because your a small school with a similarly small fan base, and the bowls are only interested in money”…but you cannot say “earn your bowl”. The bowls get to pick, unless your no.1, and they pick teams with huge fan bases.

Larry, if memory serves me correctly-and I admit it may not, GT will not be selected to head west again after going last year. The ACC has the ability to switch teams to prevent such matchups. I know this was discussed last year and I am pretty sure it is in play.

Regardless, GT can’t fall far enough to head west in any scenario given the number of qualifying teams the ACC has so I guess it is a moot point.

It is true that if GT beats Miami they will go to the Gator Bowl vs. Notre Dame. The Gator prefers ND over a Big East team but ND may get trumped by a Big 12 team needing a spot. ND is still a pretty weak team but may get the nod because, well, they are ND.

Lose to Miami and it looks like Charlotte.

It doesn’t matter where Tech goes, their fans will not follow—-they don’t even support them in home games….which is why none of the bowls want to take Tech. A couple of years ago the Gator Bowl tried to ditch them when they finsihed second in the conference to Wake Forest but the ACC held the Gator’s feet to the fire. This is not thoughtless vitrol, this is simply the truth. If Georgia Tech fans want their team to be the big time program that they like to pretend they are they need to step up and support their team. They need to buy the pay the money and buy the tickets and go to the games. It’s funny. Tech fans, especially on this board, like to brag about how much money Tech grads make in comparison to UGA grads….but Georgia’s athletic department is the richest in the land and supports the team wherever they go. If Tech loses out they will be lucky to anywhere. And their fair weather fans will be sitting here complaining and telling everybody how bad they will beat Georgia—-NEXT year.

Of course of the bowls now available to us, the Gator has the most prestige. I would enjoy the Music City Bowl, being an aspiring guitar player, but we will make the trip anywhere east of the Mississippi.Though I hope its not the Peach Bowl as we have always played poorly there. I think part of the reason is that the kids feel like if you are going to give up Christmas at home, you surely want a nice trip out of it, Not to stay in Atlanta. Plus it seems like someone always tears up a knee when we play on an artifical surface.
