Goal adjustment?

All things seemed possible until Saturday. The division title, the ACC crown, the Orange Bowl.

Now what?

Georgia Tech still has an outside shot at winning the Coastal Division — the Jackets must beat Miami while Virginia Tech and North Carolina each lose two of their final three games. Virginia also must lose one of its last two.

Conceivable? Yes. Likely? No.

It looked to me like North Carolina and Georgia Tech had comparable talent. The Tar Heels were just crisper in most facets of the game. Blame it on injuries, the rest factor, homefield advantage, whatever.

Tech was about to get the ball back down 7-0 when Roddy Jones fumbled the punt. Shocking, because Jones had been so dependable on returns and was playing another fine game (6 carries, 56 yards; 2 catches, 20 yards). The redshirt freshman has really come on the past few weeks.

In any case, Tech wasn’t good enough to overcome it. As to why the offense never really got going until Dwyer’s long TD run, Luke Decock of The News & Observer offered an interesting perspective. Check out his column.

My question is, have you adjusted your thoughts on what will constitute a great season? Have you written off the ACC title as a pipe dream?

Don’t look now, but Central Michigan is gaining on the trade school in the polls (albeit outside the Top 25, of course). The fact that the ajc is still drawing up scenarios whereby gtu can win a division is yet another indictment of the acc. It’s good that the jackettes can now see how difficult it is to win (or even play well) with injuries to the lines and giving the other team short fields due to turnovers and bad special teams play.

This season was destined to be great before it even began because we finally got rid of the worst coach in the history of the world…Chan Gailey. Tech is ahead of schedule because of the great coaching of Paul Johnson and the new staff…even though they have had obstacles to overcome… training a QB, teaching an o-line to block in this new scheme with players not really recruited for this offense….getting the Gailey attitude out of the team…putting together a reasonable defense instead of Tenuta’s constant riverboat gamble…etc. If not for Nesbitt missing so many games and playing hurt in others, and also the severe injury problems with the o-line and defensive backs, we could have had a remarkable season. As it is, we have had a much better than expected transition and the future is so bright we may all have to wear shades. Look at Texas Tech and what happens when you get a system that works matched up with the proper personnel. Ga. Tech can be just as dominate in a few years once we get the right personnel and depth thoughout the whole team. Thank God and Greyhound that Chan Gailey is gone FOREVER. And Thank God that Paul Johnson is bringing Tech football back. Hallleeedamloooooyah!!

No, I havent written off my Yellow Jackets, we’ve exceeded expectations, and cna still win ten games this season. UNC is a very good football team with an excellent head coach. Butch Davis has those kids believing again and sometimes thats all it takes. I am still proud of the team and give coach Johnson a ton of credit for what he has done this season. We have a week to get ready for Miami, and then we’ll have an extra couple of days to get ready for UGA. Both are winnable games and both would be huge for the program, especially beating our rivals in Athens. But no matter what happens, this is been a thrill to watch and will be even more enjoyable in the years to come. Dont hang your heads Jackets, you guys have done a great job, and we are all proud of you guys.

**Saturday was a tough day.

A young Tech team to begin with had to play without a very good offensive tackle. Playing with inexperienced and undersized tackles put Tech at a serious disadvantage.

Add failures to pickup two first downs on 4th and something plus two fumbles giving Carolina the ball in scoring position and thats the ball game.

But, the good news. This young Tech team never quit.

CJP has it going in the right direction.

Bring on Miami and the Dawgs.**

If I’m not mistaken, the Sagarin conference ratings now has the ACC in 2nd behind the Big 12 and ahead of the smash mouth SEC. After you get past FLA, ALA, LSU, GA and a pretty good SC team, the rest of the SEC is a joke.

The FSU game was an undeserved gift.

Like I said before GT will not win another game this year.

But just wait until next year - when we lose the vast majority of the Defensive front due to graduation. Every game will be a track meet. We may score 35 but we will be giving up 45.

This time next year we may 3-7 instead of 7-3

m will have CPJ on a Greyhound before you know it.

Joseph…what are you smoking? How in the world is this year different???? We were 7-2 and had a chance to get to our conference championship! Take a look at the last time Tech was 7-2 during the season. CPJ has had a half year to implement a TOTALLY new O and D system. That’s the kind of crap that other teams see about our fan base and laugh at. We are young but have been competitive in every game we play. We did get whipped by UNC but it was 7-0 at the half. It’s great to be in every football game we play and it’s been a LONG time before I’ve been able to say that. GO JACKETS!!!!! GO CPJ!!!!!

gt0/Scott- You have been saying it since before the Clemson game. We started to give the game back to FSU, but at the last second they returned it. Thus is football. You are pathetic, and a terrible fan. We have been reloading on defense for quite some time, and it will continue.

gt0267b, you’re crazy.

That’s the last road game I’m going to in N. Carolina. The previous trip was for the Duke debacle. Franklin Street was fun and at least I got to stop at JR Cigars on the way.

That was a terrible performance by the jackets. I think they were worn out mentally and physically, now its time to get ready for the last two games and I don’t see why we can’t win both. 9-3 or 8-4 with a win over the fleabags makes for a special year.

That article by Decock is a crock. We lost because of turnovers, getting stuffed on 4 and short twice, and playing without 4 starters on the o-line and a qb playing with two bum ankles, not because some defensive coach played at Oklahoma in the 80’s. I wouldn’t say giving up over 300 yards on the ground is a great defensive performance.

Special teams could be the difference in the GT vs UGA game this year, both seem to be putting our defenses in short field position for the opposing teams. Kentucky’s average starting position in the second half on saturday was 14 yardline, can’t continue to give up yardage that easy. Tech done their D the same way with turnovers. should be an evenly matched game this year.

Nobody expected us to be 7-3 at this point of the season, ranked just outside the Top 25, and with a great chance to got 8-4 and get a decent bowl game. Tech is young and thin, and the accumulation of injuries was too much to overcome against a good team that had 2 weeks to prepare. BTW, the FSU win was not a gift…the Jackets were well in control until our QB went out with an ankle sprain, and the defense made the play it had to make to save the game. With a healthy Nesbitt at QB and a week and a half to get the O-line set, we will run right over Miami. So let’s pack Bobby Dodd, do the dumb White-Out thing (it’ll look good on ESPN, I guess) and get to 8-3. GO JACKETS!

Let’s put things in perspective…

SO FAR, this year, with:

One of the youngest teams in the NCAA;

A limited number of scholarship players on the team;

Returning players who had been recruited for a Pro-Style Offense;

A new Offensive scheme;

A new Defensive scheme;

Late Recruiting opportunities due to the change of Coaching Staff;

AND

Numerous injuries and player defections,

GA Tech BEAT:

Boston College AT Boston College Clemson AT Clemson Mississippi State, from the legendary SEC Shut out Duke Florida State

AND

NEARLY BEAT:

Virgina Tech AT Virgina Tech University of Virginia

This is a testament to Coach Johnson, his staff, and the players as well. Their hard work, dedication, unity, and sense of pride has been a joy to watch.

It’s also been a pleasure hearing how the phrase “student athlete” has become such an emphasis in the program as well.

Rather than looking at GA Tech’s curriculum as a hindrance, as other Coaching staffs have tried to use against the program, it’s now used as a sales “tool,” to show the “added value” of coming to GA Tech.

Beat Miami. Beat Georgia. Win the Bowl game = 10-3 season, when was the last time we won 10 games? It’s had to be seven or eight years ago, Gailey never won 10 games. For Johnson to do it in his first season would create great expectations for next year and bring huge crowds to every game. Since we have so many returning starters, we’re likely to start in the top20 at the lowest.

To the gt027bs of the world: I wish the coaches and players had a way to critique you. One comment might go like: “The only reason the FSU game sold out, is FSU fans turned out.” I have been to all the games this year. When we travel, the opposing teams have their stands filled with their school colors. At Tech, we’re lucky if half the stands are our school colors. This lack of support from the fans will also hurt recruiting. Why go to a school that lacks the ability to fill a small stadium (small compared to somewhere like Bama)? The team needs to get healthy and improve but the fans need to improve also.

Absolutely bogus. Georgia Tech churned up yardage on UNC all game long. The Jackets just hurt themselves at the wrong moments. Fumbles late in the game and Penalties that ended long drives are what crushed the Jackets. North Carolina was as Lucky against Tech as Tech was against FSU. It’s not heartbreak for the Jackets but rather a learning experience about staying focused for 60 minutes.

Saturday was brutal. It was hard to watch. But analyzing it afterward, it wasn’t as bad as it seemed. It unraveled at the end and made the end result look worse than it was. Erase a couple of key mistakes and it could have been a close game. Our young team was banged up, on the road, and facing a team that was rested and prepared.

We have two remaining realistic goals:

Goal 1: Beat Miami Goal 2: Obtain a bowl bid in the Eastern time zone.

In the big picture, the season is already a relative success. Under all the circumstances, seven wins looked very unlikely at the beginning of the year. One more win and a bowl appearance would seal the year as a success.

Face it…beating UGA this year ain’t going to happen. UGA’s defense isn’t that good, but they will use the off week to rest and to come up with a scheme to slow our O. The hard truth is that our defense won’t be able to stop their offense. We won’t be able to win a high-scoring contest. Besides, our special teams are pitiful.

Our return to status as a competitive program is ahead of schedule. The offense should be more efficient next year. We lose some big talent up front on defense, but that’s part of the college game…you have to continually reload. The LBs and secondary should get better and will be solid for several years. We’ve got to improve our special teams play. Use a scholarship on a big-time punter.

For the fans, we need to show up for our final home game and give this team our support. Buy the ticket, take the next day off of work, put your fanny in a seat and yell your lungs out.

Go Jackets….THWG!!!

I agree with the special teams comment. Honestly, the STs are pathetic. FG’s that aren’t even close, bad kickoffs, poor return coverage, and miffing a fair catch. I mean, in a 7-0 game, you just can’t do that.

At the end of the day, I’m pleasantly surprised and the team and coaches deserve a lot of credit. Let’s keep things in perspective, though. Tech always wins at least one game it shouldn’t (maybe ugag?) and loses a game it shouldn’t (UVa).

The Oklahoma argument in itself is a bit misleading. The Miami defenses of 1987 & 1988 averaged giving up 9.6 points per game. They shut out a lot of teams NOT running the “wishbone.” The 1989 Championship Miami team gave up 10.58 points per game. The only team to beat Miami in 1988 was Notre Dame… which ran the wishbone.

Execution is the key to any offense. We did not execute well on Saturday. If UNC has found a magic formula for stopping the option, our coach will tell us after he watches the film.

I don’t think surrendering 423 yards is effectively stopping an offense. We obviously had some problems in the red zone that need to be addressed.

Even if we don’t win another game this season (I believe we certainly have a great chance to win 9 games) this season is a success. Why? Because we made the transition from not just a coaching staff, but a totally new offense with players meant for another system. Despite what many think coaching changes aren’t about short term gains (But beating UGA would be nice), but long term success (Beating them many times in the future) and Coach Johnson runs a better program than any of our previous regimes (enough with the name calling m. We all need to move on from CG.). He has done this before and I have seen it. GET WELL & Keep up the great work Jackets!

Same sheep in different clothing. Even though our uniforms and coach have changed our team still underperforms in clutch games. I am so disgusted for our failure to complete the task at hand and wrap up the ACC Coastal.

Meanwhile I turn it over and Stafford and the mutts are lighting up the scoreboard for 42, but their defense gives me hope that maybe, just maybe their seven game win streak will come to an end.

I just feel like Charlie Brown getting ball pulled out from under me every time I get my hopes up that this team is different. When Jaybow fumbled I threw up a little in my mouth.

Look at the Sagarin conference ratings. The ACC is rated 2nd behind the Big 12 and ahead of the 3rd place SEC. No biased sportwriters or coaches get to vote in the Sagarin. I guess the ACC is tougher, but why wouldn’t it be when SEC teams play half their games against such powerhouses as Kentucky, Miss. St., Ole Miss, Arkansas, Auburn, Vandy and the mighty Vols. Those 7 teams are below average at best. Once the season got going Ole Miss beat FLA and Wake Forest beat Ole Miss. Everybody was hyping Vandy until Duke beat ‘em in Nashville. I also remember the talk that Miss. St. was in the SMASH MOUTH SEC and they would pound Tech. Yes, I know Alabama beat Clemson the first week and Spurrier beat NC State the first week, but the ACC right NOW is stronger top to bottom than the SEC. The SEC is a two team conference and the Sagarin conference ratings reflect it.

I believe we had 3 or less in each game but we weren’t getting takeaways. Va Tech - zero, UNC- zero, UVA I think one. You people that think we need another offense are completely STUPID. You complain about this option offense and our O-line but how do you think we will block everybody on the defense when in this offense you let some defenders essentially block themselves which allows for better angles on blocks and more double team blocks. Why do you think we should pass more when we struggle to pass block the 12-18 times of our ordinary game now. Some of you people need to decide if you’re on or off the boat. If you’re off, stay off and go find some other team and coach to deride. If you’re on and want to complain at least know what you’re talking about. Yes, it’s true that UGA outgained UF in total yards, just as Tech outgained UNC in total yards. But the end results in both were blowouts. With the teams from Georgia on the sh!t end of the stick.

I think it’s great that tech fans are also defacto gator fans. I mean, if you can’t get the job done yourselves, you might as well latch on to the team that can. You guys are the toadys of the college football world. Only your host, in this case the gators, doesn’t even know yall exist. You guys are pathetic. Your girls are hideous. Your school is in the atlanta ghetto. Just shoot yourselves already.

Of course we take the UGA vs TECH game seriously, so what if we have a week off. Tech has over a week off too, they play the previous thursday night. ARE U READY OR NOT???????

First of all… M- I am really getting sick and tired of your Chan Gailey-bashing posts. Its week 11 now, Chan is gone for a reason. Lets get over it. You are stinking up these blogs with your mindless rants about how we were never good because of the worst coach in history. He is gone. Let it go and talk some intelligent football, please.

That having been said,

I think a lot of people can agree that the Carolina game came at a very inopportune time in the schedule, especially with such a huge chance for a letdown after a banged-up Tech team held on to upset FSU in one of the loudest games at bobby dodd since 1999. As far as raw talent goes, we got it. As far as coaching goes, we got it and its going to keep getting better as the years progress. But we’re still a young team and this loss will really help all these guys in the long run to learn how to deal with adversity. The season is not over yet either, Get healthy, Beat Miami and Uga, go to a January bowl and lest wrap up a 10 win season. If we win out, No one will doubt us in the years to come.

The Jackets were still in the game at the end of the 3rd qtr and had UNC pretty much in check until Roddie’s fumble which UNC converted into points as a good team will. The CPJ offense runs on precision and Nesbitt was slowed by his ankle injury. The dawgs better hope that Nesbitt isn’t fully healthy or Tech/UGA will be a long night for them. After watching Kentucky run amuck thru the dawg defense, such that it is, Tech will run up 600+ rushing yards against them. Go Jackets - To hell with ga.

Fans need to keep things in perspective concerning this yellow jacket team. We have already exceeded expectations this year by winning about 4 more games than all of the forecasters predicted we would win. As Michael Johnson stated several weeks ago, the only thing that will be us is we ourselves. That has proven to be the case. We lost VT game on turnover before the half, and several costly penalties at the end, we lost the VA game on turnovers, we lost the NC game on 2 turnovers that resulted in 14 Carolina points. We tried an onside kick after scoring 7 that would not have happened had the score been 7 to 7. We had back to back penalties on a good drive, and 2 missed field goals. When you beat yourself, you usually loose. Forget this one, get ready for Miami, win it and we are 5 & 3 in conference. Still a good chance for a good bowl. Don’t look forward to the Dogs, play the one we have on schedule next, then take care of Dogs. As much as I despise the Dogs, I had rather win the ACC than worry about GA. They can be beat.

gt0 is on crack. Here’s an example of how to be a fan: shut up, enjoy the fact that our team is playing harder than it has since Hamilton left and take a 14 hour flight to watch GT play Miami and UGA. I’ll be flying in and happy to watch Tech do it’s thing. If we win, it’s a bonus.

Tech has played great football. Dwyer’s a stud. Nesbitt might be something really special next year and in his senior year. Our D will be experienced for the next three years. We’ve got a team and a coaching staff that are completely synced up.

This year has already exceeded expectations, but avoiding the traditional November melt down is critical to keep the momentum:

7 wins = about what was expected 8 wins = better than expected 9 wins = great season 10 wins = pheonomenal season

Tokyo - ho hum. Ten win seasons may be rare (or “phenonomenal” - nice grammar) on the flats, but they’re no big deal anywhere else. But I guess it’s all relative, right? Loser.

I am so glad Paul Johnson is getting on the pathetic ACC refs about that Chop Block that killed us. This is from the AJC today:

In the third quarter of Tech’s 28-7 loss to North Carolina in Chapel Hill, guard Joseph Gilbert was flagged for a chop block — called when one player blocks a defender high and another player simultaneously blocks him at thigh level or lower. Johnson argued the call — he told an Atlanta Touchdown Club luncheon that “I’m still looking for [it] on tape” — and said it was one of two plays that changed the course of the game.

This is what I posted earlier:

Score 7-0, Tech had 1st down at the UNC 29, and 2 big penalties killed us. I couldn’t see the chop block on #70 on my DVR, so I can’t say if it was a good call. On the 2nd penalty of holding, however, I thought Dwyer was clearly hit out of bounds and the Raycom announcer, Doc Walker, agreed, but no flag on UNC. They should have been off-setting penalties. Instead, it was an almost impossible down and yardage situation for Tech.

I am most curious to see if this has any impact on the ACC officials in the Miami game. Fair officiating is a rariy in the ACC.

Hey Techies,

We are glad you are trying to “white out” the game. Are you trying to make it feel more like home (i.e. bowl games in Boise) or making it feel like a home game for us Canes (we got white powder all around us)? Either way, it’s all about THE U.

I see Coach Johnson has taken on the tech mantle in regards to whining about the refs. Just because he wants to reinvent rules, or simply enact those of D-IAA, doesn’t mean legitimate refs will stop calling chop blocks for what they are: illegal and dangerous. Stop whining coach, and adopt a competent offense while you’re at it.

To yellowblood, DawgMan, Dawgstradamus, and other trash talking dawgs using various aliases: I am embarrassed to call myself a Bulldog to read some of this garbage you guys spew forth on Tech’s blog. You have no concept of class or good sportsmanship. Why don’t you go to the Dawg blog and post something intelligent instead of trying to tear down our rival who, after all, also represents the state of Georgia. I am a UGA alum, and I don’t think many of my classmates talk the way you do, so my only conclusions is that you never saw the inside of a classroom at Georgia. Please go away. You are not doing any favors for the University of Georgia. I pull for Tech to win except when they play us, and I hope they do the same.

ramblin gamblin wrote Look at the Sagarin conference ratings. The ACC is rated 2nd behind the Big 12 and ahead of the 3rd place SEC.

Great Point. Also, more NFL players were drafted from the ACC than any other conference the past 3 years including the top 3: Calvin Johnson, Matt Ryan, and Mario West. Finally, the ACC leads all conferences in graduation rates while the SEC is dead last!

Never really cared about the ACC, because I didn’t think we could play consistently enough to have a shot (over the whole schedule).

The only goal remaining is to beat the mutts. The Miami game is merely icing on the cake.

That article is BS! It was more of the injuries along the O Line and a less than 100% QB. At times it looked very similar to the earlier games where penetration caused problems at the QB’s decision point. They came out flat.

The key to the UNC loss was Carolina’s very first drive. TWICE we had them backed up in long yardage situations and TWICE we let them off the hook and they scored. Must give them credit for making plays but it changed the whole complexion of the game.

My boy Penn did do a good job with that call on the Dawgs against Bama. His crew also did a great job not seeing the offensive and defensive PI by the Gators. TECH NEEDS TO FOCUS ON MIAMI AND UGA ON AUBURN. IF BOTH R LOOKING AHEAD WOULD NOT SURPRISE ME IF THEY BOTH LOST. ACC AND SEC LOOK PRETTY CLOSE. YOU THROW IN BAMA AND FLA. NO ACC TEAM LOOKS ANYTHING CLOSE TO BEING THAT STRONG. EDGE TO SEC. ACC BEST MIGHT BE AT THE LEVEL OF UGA OR LSU. TOUGH TO CALL BUT NOT WAY OUT OFF LINE. BUT NO ACC TEAM IS AS BAD AS THE VOLS RIGHT NOW. BOTTOM HALF EDGE ACC. WITH THAT SAID I SAY TECH BEATS MIAMI AT HOME WITH FOCUS. UGA WINS ON THE ROAD FOCUSED. WILL BE 1 HECK OF A GAME. C U N ATHENS.

78 Falcon,

Correct. No sense in either team worrying about anyone other than their next opponent. Dawgs still have a shot at an at-large BCS spot depending on what happens with UF and Bama. Georgia will be ready for Tigers and will have an extra week to get ready for Tech.

Tech still has a good shot at Gator Bowl. The U has a tough game against VA Tech before they play GA Tech so that helps Tech.
