Offensive woes
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The first game of the post-Andrew Gardner era wasn’t pretty.
Tech hasn’t been shut out since 1997, a stretch of 142 games. Thanks to Jonathan Dwyer’s 85-yard touchdown run with six minutes left, Tech kept that streak alive. The final was UNC 28, Tech 7.
Looking for a spark, Tech replaced QB Josh Nesbitt with Jaybo Shaw early in the third quarter. Nesbitt returned early in the fourth. But the offense never clicked consistently.
The game started badly for Tech.
On 3rd-and-26, UNC’s Cameron Sexton made a pinpoint sideline throw to Brooks Foster. The play went for 25 yards, then the Tar Heels easily converted 4th-and-inches. UNC moved right down the field after that, and it was 7-0 less than four minutes in.
On Tech’s second drive, CPJ went for it on 4th-and-3 from the UNC 46. Dwyer was stuffed after a 1-yard gain and the Tar Heels took over.
But Tech stopped UNC on 4th-and-4 from the Jackets’ 33, Darryl Richard sacking Sexton. We saw three fourth-down tries in the first quarter alone.
Early in the second quarter, Tech went for it again on 4th-and-1 from the UNC 38, and this time Dwyer went nowhere. That made Tech 8 of 16 on 4th-down tries this season.
The defense kept giving the offense more chances. Derrick Morgan batted down a Sexton pass to force one of UNC’s three first-half punts.l
Finally, Tech’s offense got moving. Josh Nesbitt found Demaryius Thomas for 14 yards, and Nesbitt scrambled for 14 more. Nesbitt hit Zach Fisher for 8 yards on 3rd-and-6. But the drive ended with Scott Blair pushing a 40-yard field-goal try wide right.
Blair missed a 52-yarder wide right just before halftime. It would have been a 47-yard try, but, inexcusably, Tech was flagged for 12 men on the field. UNC led 7-0 at halftime.
Tech gained 175 yards in the first half but had nothing to show for it. Second-half fumbles, by Roddy Jones and Shaw, sealed Tech’s fate. Tech tried a bunch of combinations on the O-line, and the tinkering probably will continue.
Tech has extra time to get ready for Miami on Nov. 20. The banged-up Jackets could use it.
Tech’s ACC title hopes are just about gone now. Do you think this team can bounce back and finish strong against Miami and UGA?

Just a crappy day. GT’s statistics speak nothing of the score, but UNC proved that a big (and well-rested) D-line combined with a solid passing game can shut us down. I hope CPJ studies the film closely from this one ‘cause Miami and UGA will be bringing more of the same. Let’s go Jackets!!!

When the offensive line is that banged up you have to counter with screens and slants in the shotgun. Do we not have a quarterback that can make those type of passes?

What a pathetic display. I thought this was the first game of the season, not the tenth. So much for the offense this season. Nesbitt should not have been playing as hurt as he seemed, and Jaybo still looked uncomfortable and couldn’t hold onto the ball again. Our defense finally wore out at the end too.
I have to say, I don’t think there’s any chance against UGA this year. Our defense will keep it close for the first half, but our offense will go nowhere and the Puppies will run up the score in the second half. Oh well, maybe next year…

This was the worst game played since the Gardner Webb game. Tech has lost 3 games this year, and all 3 losses can be attributed to turnovers. The offense was out of synch. The offensive line was not blocking, and special teams were awful. On the third of play of the game, when the defense gave up a 3rd. & 26 to let NC get out of a hole, I knew we were in trouble. Then later on when they gave up a 2nd. & 20, things didn’;t improve. This was certainly not the same team that beat FSU last week. This team controls its on destiny, and the off week comes at a good time. I am quite sure Coach Johnson and his staff will have them ready to play Miami on Nov. 20. The only thing that will sooth my day is for the mighty dogs to get beat by KY.

Its a good thing that none of yall coach or play ball. You give up after every loss, then you hop back on after every win. Just a matter of time before someone says we won’t win another all year. Some of you are embarassing.

It’s pretty simple - the offensive line couldn’t block a toddler today. Especially on any of the fourth down/important third down plays.
One good thing - this is a very young team, and they are playing with an incredible amount of injuries.

Wow. North Carolina SLAUGHTERS the Techsters and their quad option highschool offense. When the nations best basketball team beats the s** out of a ‘favorite’ in the Awful Coast Conference you know there’s a huge problem. Anyone else getting tired of the “disinformation” that this coaching staff is giving regarding the status of the players? We hear from CPJ that Nesbitt is “near 100 percent” deuring the week. No way that anyone believed that to be true.

Chan has returned!!!!
Same old CRAP, CRAP, CRAP.
Totally unprepared and poorly coached. Fumbles, poor special teams and the worst offensive line play conceivable.
UNC converts 3rd and 26 on their first scoring drive? Are you friggin’ kidding me??? Where was our vaunted D-line?

I was expecting a loss today given all of the circumstances. Too bad the turnovers took us out of having a chance to hang around and maybe pulling out victory in the 4th. I am confident CPJ will have the Jackets ready for Miami.

Remember last week when UGA lost and Tech won? All the insect snobsters were talking trash. Now, this week the insect-lovers will be calling UGA rednecks and saying Who Cares? We techmites have big jobs, and UGA people mow grass and fry taters for us. So, hypocrites that the effete ones are (not that there are many of them), they say football matters when they win, and they alibi & cringe when GT loses. I’m with Bandwagon, some of y’all sound like a bunch of whiners. The O-line has struggled all year and it didn’t figure to get any better when we lose a Tackle who has started every game the last 4 years. WE ARE YOUNG!
We didn’t lose because we couldn’t move the ball, it was turnovers and not sustaining drives. 326 yards on the ground and 100 in the air, ain’t a bad day at the office.
Carolina had 120 less yards offense and 3 minutes less time of possession, but they had NO TURNOVERS.
Tech needs to get rested and they’ll bounce back strong at home against Miami.

Turnovers did us in and have a few times this season running the ball. That said we did move the ball some and could not sustain it. It may be helpful if Tech works on developing a short controlled effective passing game along with some vertical passes inorder to open up the option game. Our Division is only going to get tougher in the future. We have to keep these defenses off balance. I like this triple option but it would help if the opposing defenses did’nt know if we were going to pass on any play, therefore opening up the runs like J. D.s 85 yarder in the 4th. We were winning the stat game well into the game but the turnovers and no scoring did it. But only pass if we are effective at it..ie don’t pass if we throw 40 times and only complete 10.

As bad as the score was, I think we played well were it not for the turnovers. Clearly Gardner will be missed at the line but kudos to Nesbitt for staying in there and playing through the obvious pain. Everyone on that field should have that same sort of determination. No one said UNC was going to be a walk in the park, and we didn’t go into at 100%. We had a bad day, but it wasn’t 49-10 bad! THWG

I commented in a blog before the game that the loss of Gardner, rather the decision of Gardner to quit on the team for a possible shot at the NFL, might doom this team. We very simply went from having an average O-Line to having a bad O-Line. But, all in all, considering the youth and lack of depth, I think we gave it a good go for a while. But the winning percentage stays the same as every coach since Ross. Hello, blue field bowl.

Look, Jacket fans, you had a bad day against a good team. We’ve had two. Your team is still light years ahead of where it was over the last few years. With the injuries, and the game being in Chapel Hill (where even the 1990 team tied an abysmally bad UNC team), you could’ve seen this one coming. Tech’s a better team than Miami. And the Georgia game will be a war.
Shake it off. I’d favor the Jackets at home against Miami after a bye week.

I was at the game and it was UNC’s homecoming and two weeks rest and our players came out of tunnel w/ their heads down. The big play of the day came on the very first drive w/ 3rd and 34 and carolina converts. You could see the players on the sidelines…heads down and not one coach was in their faces the entire day. It was like WIERD!!!
7-0 going into the 4th quarter w/ a banged up team isn’t that bad and then three straight turnovers. UNC only scored 7 of their points by actually driving on us. We fumbled away the other 21 points.
As on blogger said a few weeks ago, the only ones to beat GT will be GT and they did just that. No disrespect to UNC but you cough up the f-cking ball three times inside your own 30 and you are asking for a beat down.
We had a bad day and we were supposed to be 3-7 at this point..not 7-3 so get over it and move on.
PS: Nesbitt was totally ineffective and hobbled after every play. CPJ should have inserted a few more passing plays to keep Nesbitt from running every dang down. He has a cannon to throw and D Thomas was uncovered most of the game.

Turnovers is why this gimmick offense will not work. CPJ needs to be shown the door. This reminds me of 1-AA football. We are back to finding a way to lose and Chan football. So much for a white-out next week. Our fans will be too embarrassed to show up except with a bag on our heads.

Lighten up, everybody. UNC is good, and they had an extra week to get healthy. Our team is beat up, and we are thin. We’ve got 12 days to get healthy for Miami, and then 9 more days to get ready for Georgia. If we split those two, which seems realistic, we are 8-4 and going to a bowl game that doesn’t have blue carpet.
Guys, we are starting 16 freshmen and sophomores. Turnovers cost us the game. Support the team!

We need to get off our high horses and remember that this is CPJ’s first year and this is a very very young team. You don’t go into B Davis’s house on homecoming, giving him two weeks to prepare and a hobbled QB to boot.

We had 100+ more yards than UNC. They scored 3 TDs on less than 40 yard drives. TO’s are the biggest problem with this team by far. Giving up field position like that is a sure way to lose nearly any game. Our offense is still rolling up yards….they just need to hold on to the GD mother f-in ball. And uga fans on here, nice thriller with kentucky.

Those of you that are only here because you can anonymously post negative things in a year when we have a new coach, new system and are performing above expectations, well, you need to find something else to do with your time.
The team is 7-3 in a year that was expected to be a 4 or 5 win season. The losses have been by a total of 31 points and hell, another team had that many points scored on them in the first half of one of their games (if you know anything about football, you know who I am talking about). Now, quit b!tchin and support the team or just shut up. Everybody seems to be whining that UNC stopped our offense. Were we watching the same game? Tech outgained UNC 423-314. That’s right, our young, injured O-line and our gimpy quarterback combined to gain 423 yards on a top-20 opponent. We had 20 first downs to UNC’s 13. We had the edge in time of possession by almost 4 minutes. The bottom line is that we beat the crap out of UNC all day but as usual, couldn’t hang on to the ball. We are averaging three fumbles per game. That’s what is killing us.
If we can manage to hang on to the ball against UGA and they bring the same defense that UK saw today, we will destroy them. If we continue to fumble the ball we won’t win another game. It’s that simple.

Folks, we need to not be so down. Yes, it was a tough game to lose, but I think we need to remember a few things.
UNC is a pretty solid team … all the “experts” had them in the top 4 or 5 of the conference before the season started. They had two weeks to get ready, and they played sound defense, as evidenced by not many plays making to the “second” level of the defense. Not having Gardner on the left side as sorely missed.
Having said that, the team still rolled up 400+ and had control of the clock. The two penalities were game-changing. Combined with not being able to stop the third-and-longs, and our inability to sustain drives … you don’t expect to win many if you don’t do those.
We hurt ourselves. Now, we get some time to rest and refocus. This team has shown a different mindset than the past, so I’m not expecting the “November swoon” and expect to see a determined bunch on the 20th. I think the team did a little growing up yesterday.
I certainly don’t want the smurf-turf game either, but I think we’ll get a game on this side of the River at least.
One binnie about the bowl game I haven’t seen too many pick up on … all of those extra practices. Just more free opportunities for the staff to coach and mentor. I think we’ll be OK.

To all you pukes out there that never played the game - Gardner’s shoulder will give him problems for the rest of his life. More than likely, he should not have played as long as he did with the injury. Risking further injury, especially after having a full dislocation during the UVA game, was not in his best interest - from an NFL standpoint and from a quality of life standpoint.

It’s a shame that Josh was so beat up. It’s hard to run this offense with a beat up qb and a less than healthy oline. But the kids fought hard until the bottom fell out. Postives
Despite offensive inconsistency, the score was only 7-0 at the beginning of the 4th quarter.
2 of UNC’s last 3 scores were NOT the result of long, sustained drives against our defense. One came after a muffed punt (by a freshman) and another was a cheap TD late when the D was desperately trying to stop a short conversion and we had a blown assignment.
Outside of a flukey play where he got a TD reception, we shut down Hakeem Nicks. He didn’t have a reception until the game was out of hand. This, the week after we did a good job against Greg Carr.
The positive is that all-in-all, despite having to be on the field a long time and being put in short-field situations, the defense continues to play well.
Take away the turnovers, and this was about the same type of game we all expected; a tough road game against a good conference opponent.
A lot of times, to win games like this, you have to rely on ball possession and field position. We got killed on both. Either Blair needs to improve significantly, or we need to recruit a punter. Can’t fault him for missing FG attempts of over 40-50 yards.
The offensive inconsistency is notable. However, Josh Nesbitt was NOT even CLOSE to 100%. The fact that CPJ stated during the week that he practiced well was clearly an attempt at dis-information. It’s clear that this offense doesn’t work with a hobbled QB.
We all know that stats don’t tell the whole story, but they do tell some things. Study the stats from yesterday. Throw out Dwyer’s 85 yard run and Nicks’ fluke TD reception at the end, we had more running yards AND more PASSING yards.
Where we got killed was in the kicking/field position game and in turnovers.
Good news, CPJ showed the willingness to try to shake things up by chaning QBs when the offense isn’t moving. Bad news, Jaybo continues to show the inconsistency of a true freshman QB (and he WILL improve).
Good news, we’ve got a week-and-a-half to heal and prepare for a home game against UM. We need to bring the same energy and intensity to that game that we saw from UNC yesterday.
Good news, UM will NOT have 2 weeks to prepare for our game. They will be coming off of a very tough game against Virginia Tech and then have to make the trip to Atlanta for a road game.
No reason that we shouldn’t be able to turn it around and win the next game.

Our offense was humming along on the second to last drive in the first half until Nesbitt injured himself. It did well on the last drive of the first half too. The problem on this one was lack of time. Our offense was doing decent with Jaybo also, but penalties killed us. (1st and 35???).
The problem was not the offense. The problem was a young team making rookie mistakes. Simple as that…

CPJ and Tech vs. CPJ’s old crew Navy in the Eagle Bank Bowl? So that’s where some of the $700 billion bailout is going……..to sponsor a bowl game.

See you in 20 days Nerds….and you mighta s well face the fact that you won’t be going to ANY bowl, because bowl sponsors like teams who will put fans in the seats….you won’t even fill up your own pathetic bandbox stadium for the Miami game…..and your moon faced coach will have all winter, spring and summer to convince you that his “perfect option” will work somewhere above middle school level.

All acc fans please tell me again about all the out of conference wins you have….LMAO!! 2 teams in the AP Top 25….my that is just grand. Don’t look now but the SEC will be playing in and winning its 3rd straight BCS Championship game. Basketball season will be here shortly…maybe UF will not win it for the 3rd time in 4 years.

Let me know when the acc has anybody in the top 16 of the BCS….otherwise the non BCS conferences will be taking the acc’s spot. Ask anybody who the stronger conference is and see what answer you get….better yet bring some stats….like rankings….
