View from Chapel Hill

The ACC’s highest-ranked teams clash at noon Saturday in Chapel Hill.

Georgia Tech leads the Coastal Division at 4-2. At 2-2, UNC is one of four other teams in the division with a realistic shot of winning it.

The Tar Heels are a 4-point favorite.

Bill Cole, of the Winston-Salem Journal, answered six questions in advance of Saturday’s game.

How beneficial was the off week to UNC, in terms of injuries and preparing for the triple option?

Butch Davis and his players said the week off worked wonders for them. Davis was happy that quarterback T.J. Yates, coming back from a fractured left ankle, and tight end Zack Pianalto, out for two games because of a sprained ankle, had time for light work last week before trying full practice this week. Davis also said that UNC began work on Georgia Tech’s offense last week because it’s so unusual and difficult to defend. He believes the head start will help but we’ll see on Saturday. He is confident UNC accomplished everything it wanted in the off week.

Has UNC been able to overcome the loss of its electric return man, Brandon Tate?

Not even close. The kickoff returns are not bad but the returners do not have the play-breaking ability Tate had any time that his legs started churning. Punts are now being handled by Trase Jones, a walkon sophomore. UNC hasn’t had a big return of any description since Tate was hurt.

Tell us about the O-line and whether it can hold up against Tech’s D-line.

The offensive line has improved but isn’t great. Garrett Reynolds, a senior right tackle, is the key player up front and the unit’s leader. Alan Pelc, Aaron Stahl and Lowell Dyer have been playing musical chairs at center and the guard positions. Dyer is a walkon but is a pretty good center. Georgia Tech’s defensive line has a definite edge.

UNC is 4-1 with QB Cameron Sexton. What has he done well and in what situations has he struggled?

Cameron Sexton is this team’s most valuable player. He had two awful interceptions at Virginia but has played with confidence and poise in every game. Two weeks ago he did something that he hasn’t done regularly: he threw the ball away every time he had no receiver or the pass rush closed in on him. He’s gotten a lot smarter. He has played amazingly well for someone who hadn’t been on the field since the fourth quarter of the 2007 season opener and who started this season No. 3 on the depth chart. If not for him, UNC isn’t 6-2. Davis said Sexton will stay the starter even when Yates returns.

Tech just lost its best offensive lineman, LT Andrew Gardner, for the season. Is UNC’s D-line capable of exploiting that?

Capable, yes. Whether it will remains to be seen. The linemen are young. Sometimes they go on tears and sometimes they can’t apply pressure. One of the line’s top players is Robert Quinn, a freshman who earned a starting job in the second game of the season. He underwent an operation last year as a high-school senior for a benign brain tumor. The linebackers will be the key. Mark Paschal, Bruce Carter and Quan Sturdivant are some of the defense’s best athletes. They can get pressure on the quarterback and hit Jonathan Dwyer early. They can pack enough wallop to bring him down. It’s a compelling matchup that could decide the outcome.

To what extent has Butch Davis energized the fan base?

The fans are treating Butch as if he’s a basketball coach. There hasn’t been this much excitement for UNC football since 1996 and ’97 when Mack Brown had his great teams before leaving for Texas. Everyone is convinced UNC will be playing for an ACC title in the near future. The crowds are noisy and are staying for the ends of all games. The atmosphere in Kenan has improved dramatically. These folks are dang near bloodthirsty now.

Good article, Larry.

In the future, it might be interesting to hear a little bit of what their fans and/or beat writers are saying about the matchup. What is their mood? Are they confident or anxious? What are their biggest concerns?

I’m a Jackets fan living in NC. I want this win for the guys more than any win in the past few years. UVA ruined GT’s HC, lets watch the boys go into CH and ruin theirs.

Tech always struggles at Chapel Hill and has won only once or twice. It will be the same this year. The Chapel Hill factor takes away 20 % of Tech’s effectiveness. If we are tied or behind at halftime, the pressure will increase even more. This is a game where Tech needs a 14 point lead and then needs to play defense like it is war.

Orange Bowl? Do they need you guys to clean the stadium or serve as vendors? This is the only way you guys get to the Orange Bowl. 8-4 does not earn an Orange Bowl ivitation.

You are correct GT45, but I think that goes for every game Tech plays. Maybe we get some points from defense or from special teams that makes the difference, but I would feel alot better if the game was in ATL.

I’m heading north and getting into the game come hell or high water.

This is going to be a nail biter. We got two great coaches going head to head for the inside track to the ACC Championship.

I don’t know if we win, but, I believe it will be a wild and crazy game, with a little bit of everything.

Fake punts (let’s hope we can convert), big plays, interceptions, fumbles, and a last second victory for somebody. I hope its GT.

It could be one of those games the officials decided the out come. I hope not.

I think the OL will step up for Gardner, and Dwyer has 200plus yards. That’s my prediction. GT 31-UNC 28

Tsk tsk…too much of the Chan mentality lingers…we never used to be able to win on the road (remember @Duke in ‘03? ouch), but this season, even that’s changed. We beat a good BC team and a spirited Clemson team on the road this year, both in very hostile environments, and had a very good chance of beating VT if the refs didn’t give that game away. I actually feel like our team is MORE FOCUSED on the road…something I never would have thought with Chan at the helm.

PS- Great job recruiting this week! This team is going to compete for a championship every year with CPJ as coach

Wreckmaniac:

Since breaking the Kenan Curse in ‘98 (no victories in Chapel Hill since WWII), we have won 4 of 5 there. No worries. This UNC team is much improved over those teams, but so are we.

The only thing that worries me is UNC coming off a bye week—will they be fresh or flat?

Also, UNC doesn’t have the lineman size that UVA has. No “more biscuits maw” here—we won’t get manhandled like we did against UVA. I look at this game more like BC, VT, or Clemson—if we win in turnover margin, we win the game.

Speaking of biscuits, “Time Out” adjacent to the UNC campus has the best chicken biscuits in the world. Period.

My real worry is how our secondary will do…also keep in mind that this will be one of the best coached opponents we have yet faced.

By gtne80

We’ve all celebrated the difference between CPJ and TCG, but the differences so far are largely intangible (attitude, effort, etc.).

Let me make it VERY CLEAR. I firmly believe that with Chan Gailey at the helm of this team, we would NOT be 7-2 right now. We might likely have lost to BC, Clemson, and/or FSU. But as much of a critic of Gailey’s as I have been, even I have to admit that he had the habit of pulling out an occasional unexpected win also.

I also believe that Coach Johnson has the program headed in a very promising direction for upcoming years. The youth on this team combined with the promising recruiting news of late makes the future look VERY BRIGHT.

That said, when it comes down to it, we’re right back to where Chan had us several times; 7-2 with 3 games left.

The real mark of Coach Johnson’s mark on the program will be the NEXT 3 (or 4 or even 5) GAMES. Too many times over the last half-decade we’ve been in a position to have a special year and had a massive flame-out over the last 3 games. We’ve gone from the penthouse to the outhouse (i.e., Boise) in a matter of less than a month.

If the same thing happens this year, my optimism will go back into the tank…maybe not quite as low as past years, since I know that the future is brighter, but I just don’t think I can handle another crash and burn.

I have every confidence in Coach Johnson. (BTW - I never referred to Chan as “Coach Gailey”). I’m ready to be optimistic…I just want to SEE IT HAPPEN!!!!!

GO JACKETS!!! THWG!!!!

A “special year” is 9-3 for the insects. How about trying to win the acc and then consider that a special year. Congrats on the one time you made it to the acc chumpionship against weak forest….why were there so many empty seats in Jacksonville? Did raycom pick up that game or did you have to listen to it on the radio? Good luck again on a “special year”.

The bye week will help UNC in a huge way. It is just the luck of the Jackets to have to play UNC and UGA after they have a2 full weeks to prepare for the offense. If they win this one I believe they will move into a different league than they have played to so far. I do hope we keep the ball in control and do not turn it over. No turn overs will be the key to the game.

Just a note to ACC Stinks…

In heads up play the ACC and SEC are 3-3. If the ACC stinks I cant imagine how you feel about the SEC and their smelliness this year. Also looking at things closer I believe the SEC has won 32 out of conference games this year while the ACC has won 33. Just a note the the ACC out of conference games include Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Alabama and Florida. Just exactly who has played a real game in the SEC this year other than Tennessee when they played Texas?

Some time it is best to be proud of what you think and just embrace and enjoy it. Trying to put other people down only shows how worried and insecure you are. You probably also like to bash gays because of your own insecurities…

Noob, just when I was ready to shuck my Chan mentality we lost at HOME to a 12 point underdog. I truly WANT to believe that this team is capable of lining up and TAKING a game based on their WILL TO WIN and their talent and effort. I know that things are improving. Maybe I’m being too impatient, but it feels like we are SO close.

On a different subject, it continues to boggle my mind that there are idiots out there like “ACC Stinks” that think it’s some great demonstration of their intelligence or manhood to post that king of crap on a Tech blog. What’s the point? Is your inferiority complex that severe? Go to the UGA(g) blog and spew all the poison that you want to, but what possible rational reason is there for doing it on a blog meant to discuss the GT-UNC game?

Yes, 9-3 is a special season when you’ve been bogged down in a mire of mediocrity brought on by the Gailey-Braine regime. Of course, 9-3 really SUCKS if your highly touted (OVERRATED) program continues to have TOP-5 recruiting classes and gets rated preseason #1. Now, “Mr. ACC Stinks,” get back to work, the line at the drive-thru is backing up.

I agree with Wrekmaniac that Tech has had trouble in Chapel Hill, BUT this is a brand new coach, offense, and defense. I hereby proclaim that the slate of past jinxes is now wiped clean having already eliminated the FSU Jinx.

I also agree with Noob. The Jackets have been more focused and done better on the road than under Gailey.

We win [or don’t lose] the turnover fight and we win.

Please email theacc.com today, click on Contact Us on the left and plea for competent and fair officiating. Bad calls killed us in the VT and UVA games and nearly did so against FSU.

I’m surprised to see you here, dawg. I thought you would still be in the hospital recovering from having your redneck, trash-talking, red and black… and blue A*******ES chomped to shreds by the Gators.

The ACC leads the SEC in overall rankings, top to bottom. The NFL drafted more players from the ACC over the past 3 years than any other conference, including the top 3, Matt Ryan, Calvin Johnson, and Mario West. The ACC leads the nation in graduation rates. The SEC is last. Finally, Tech has won more National Championships than the dawgs including the only consensus NC in 1917.

GT81,

Exactly when did Tennessee play Texas? Do you know anything you are talking about? Let me see…. the Tide gave Clumpson (overwhelming pick to win acc) a beat down….UF gave Miami (who will win the coastal a beat down)…USC gave the wolfpups (ok, they suck) a beat down….tech gave missy state a beat down (of course missy state will be looking for new coach after this year)….duke squeaked by overrated vandy (both of these are perennial doormats)….Johnny Rebs are beaten by weak forest….now tell me what ranked teams out of conference has the acc beaten???Crickets??Arkansas who absolutely stinks in the SEC beat the #19 team Tulsa (ok they were overrated). Your highest ranked team is 19th, 19th!! Your record in BCS games is 1-9. BCS games are where you go to prove your conference is stronger…we all see how that has worked out for the acc. You will be lucky to have one team in a BCS game this year (have to be ranked in top 16 and that will be a stretch for any team in weak @$$ acc). Maybe you guys can play the little east this year if you do make the BCS and run your record to 2-9. Don’t worry basketball will be here shortly for you guys…

Hardees, what are you…Fifteen years old? People say LMAO? Are you kidding me? Thanks for giving away your age, dolt.

I know you’re upset because your “national championship bound” Georgia Bulldogs are UNDER-PERFORMING, again…ahh, that must be so frustrating. You don’t need to poke fun at the University of Tennessee football program…I remember runs where they beat the hell out of UGA for ten years in a row, and they have won 2 out of the last 3… Remember the score: HALF A HUNDRED to 33? In Athens? That must have been embarrassing. I’ve been a Vol van for all my life, and will always be one…but I go to Tech, and my ties are here now.

Again, you know that I’m spot on with my moonshine and dip comment. You have nothing to say. I’m not surprised you didn’t have a rebuttal, because you know it’s true.

You also have no validity to what you say, because you probably NEVER played sports in your life. You’ve never gone to Georgia…you tailgate, watch them on CBS, and go to the “blackout” games when you’re all fired up.

“Get your last a* place back”….okay, again, I go to Georgia Tech. We are in FIRST place, which is quite the opposite of the “BULLDAWGS” who are dreadfully under-achieving this year. That must be VERY embarrassing.. for such a “strong” fan base, and such a “great and storied” football program..If our sports teams struggle, we atleast have SOMETHING to fall back on…

WHAT DOES UGA HAVE?? Partying? You can only call that out SO MANY times before it gets a little over-played (like the nerd thing).

Shouldn’t you guys have won a national title by now? Wait, I shouldn’t say “you guys”, because you have NO TIES TO THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA. You are the kind of person that is a disgrace because you were too stupid to get into a school (that isn’t that hard to get into) like UGA, so you have to go to a CRAP school like Southern, State, or even Valdosta and then root for your “Dawgs”. I’d be very scared to be a UGAy fan come late November.

ACC, Yes..I do go to Georgia Tech. Is that alright with you? I actually had the opportunity to go to Tech, UGAy, or Tennessee, but I chose to go to Tech because it was EASILY the best college to go to out of the three.. EASILY.

what are you talking about? I’m a dweeb who is pretending to be someone I am not? I don’t get what you’re trying to say here. My family (but not me) grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, so I’ve always grown up being a UT fan. My next door neighbor is family with Fulmer. I’m a fan.

Don’t you DARE even question me as an athlete or a fan. My grandfather was on the 1952 national championship team at Georgia Tech. I will be DAMNED if I have some redneck Georgia Southern grad come on here and try to belittle me. Your brain isn’t big enough.

Neither is something else.

And ACC, I know you’re the same person as “Hardees”…The LMAO’s give it away, WAY too easily..

Actually, I’m graduating with a triple major of Marketing, Information Technology, and Finance. I’m hopefully getting a job with a major sports franchise in the area. What are you majoring in? Beer funneling? Body shots? Give me a break.

Hey Stinks,

The ACC has won more OOC games against ranked teams than the SEC.

Maryland beat #23 California NC State (the worst team in the ACC) beat #15 East Carolina UNC beat #24 UConn

The SEC has only 2 wins against ranked teams this year.

Also, only 2 of the SECs OOC losses have come against ranked teams, whereas 4 of the ACC’s losses have come against ranked teams. The SEC plays the weakest OOC schedule of any major conference.

By the way where did all the money come from…mom or dad? Did you hit one up for it one weekend and the other the following weekend? Triple major…I call BS. Music Technology is offered from “Georgia Tech University”…you might want to talk to your boy Stephon Marburry about the name of the school….and you “go to” Yech? So do all the bums to beg for money….most students actually “attend”. You might want to use that terminology when “posing” as a student.

1 : covering completely or broadly : inclusive 2 : having or exhibiting wide mental grasp

obviously you do not subscribe to 2:

It’s ok…I know you are incredibly gifted in math and in the band.

ACC, it shows you actually DO NOT read my posts. I said my family was from there, but I am not…dolt.

What point are you trying to make by asking where the money came from? What are you talking about? If you really want to talk money, I owned two small businesses at the age of 14. What were you doing? Touching yourself to a Maxim magazine, probably. I’ve got a portfolio probably five times the worth of your mobile home, and I’m only in my twenties. Trust me, I’ll be well off in a year, and you will still be posting on the AJC website about how good UGA is.. that’s laughable.

Triple major, yes.. It’s not rare that people major in MORE THAN ONE THING. I value my education, and I’m sure my job offers in a year will show that. I’m proud of it.

What are you proud of? Do you have a G.E.D.?

Please don’t try to point out certain athletes at our school saying they have an “Easy way” out. You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about. This institution has NO “gimme” classes.. What was that one really hard class at UGAy that had a final that consisted of:

  1. How many points is a 3 point shot?

  2. How many quarters are in a basketball game?

If I remember correctly, that was UGA and its stellar academics. Now that’s really funny.

Please don’t try to be smart by comparing the words “go to” and “Attend”… that’s all you have? Seriously? I think you’ve run out of ideas.

two businesses at 14….that’s rich…the only portfolio you have is the one you carried to high school biology….well of in a year…why not now? did you spend all the money from your first couple of jobs (folding clothes for mom and washing the fat Phil’s underwear)? Not sure of your definition of “well off” but if you are in your twenties $45k per year would be “well off”…again LMAO.

I’m not Volman… although it appears that has already been understood. Ironically I live in Valdosta at present; and can attest to the ridiculousness of the “dawg” faithful that reside here. Most haven’t even been to Athens, much less seen UGA play anywhere but on television. Maybe that’s why they’re so belligerent and protective of something that’s not….. theirs. People are scared of what they don’t know and most “dawg” fans don’t know much of anything.

GT45, you are eminently correct. if we don’t put the ball on the turf at Kenan, we win.

The UNC coach has already tried what the UVA coach did - complimented Tech handsomely and lullingly. Hope nobody believes him. Bobby Bowden tried it too (he’s the alltime softsoap champ), but it didn’t work this time.

Tech, having already conquered the Ryan Perilloux jinx, the Boston jinx, the SEC superiority jinx, the resurgent Blue Devil jinx, the midget sleeper G-Webb jinx, and the FSU jinx, has now to overcome the Chapel Hill jinx. We can do it, but UNC is tough, PLENTY tough.

ACCSTINKS: THE TECH-UNC game is bigger this year than the TECH -UGA game . The SEC now must live with the fact that the BIG 12 is the PRIME BIGGIE in the college game.

By wreckmaniac

November 7, 2008 9:36 PM | Link to this

ACCSTINKS; The SEC is a conference with two fine teams propped up by two good teams and 8 poor to medium teams. The luster is gone, sport. I will give 7 points to any SEC team who plays any BIG 12 team in the nat champ game.
No wonder CMR found Staff in Texas. At least he knew where the talent was. The problem is that he recruited the 6th best QB in the state.

FOLKS….remember that this was supposed to be a building and learning season. So if we lose the next 3 games, PLEASE don’t blame it on Johnson. Here are the reasons: 1. He doesn’t have his full offensive package in place

  1. He doesn’t have all the players in place to execute the way he needs (o-line(

  2. We lose our best o-lineman for the season

  3. Nesbitt’s ankle will cause him havoc and he won’t be as mobile. He might be ready for Miami but not UNC

  4. Two of the final 3 are on the road

So please don’t jump on his back if he drops 2 or the final 3 or even the last 3. He wasn’t supposed to have this team in this position to begin with. So the future is beyond bright. Look for an ACC Championshp next year.

wreckmaniac,

and the statistics to back up your invalid argument?? If it is teams ranked, let’s see where Big 12 ranks at end when all teams have played each other. What we “do know” are past results when settled on the field and the top conference is the …………SEC!! Try again, wrecked.

We cannot break the “OMG my little sister could break through this offensive line” jinx. If we can keep breaking big plays and avoid the turnovers we might be able to salvage another win or two this year. You really cannot be disappointed with progress so far, considering Navy’s horrible 1st year under CPJ. Looking forward to next year…

Well RamblinWrecker, guess we won’t be cleaning up the Orange Bowl. Maybe playing in it unlike you.

Just got back to Atlanta from Chapel Hill and it was wonderful to get some payback from last year on you guys. Very beautiful drive with a Carolina Blue sky overhead.

And for Battle Axe, who called my home state socialist, well, I could say this inbred backward state I live in now is a racist, backward piece of crap state once you leave Atlanta. But what do you expect of people who want the Confederate flag as a part of their state flag. Obama will be a better President than that idiot who ruined this country over the last 8 years. I can say this because I served my country HONORABLY for 20 years as a Naval Officer. An African American Naval Officer. Probably ordered some rednecks around during my career who hated that.

And finally, thanks for the non attention last week in the AJC, talking about playing Miami for the Coastal Division crown as if you didn’t have a game yesterday. Chickens came home to roost on that one baby! My Alma Mater showed up even though we were an afterthought all last week. I was there, it was wonderful, go to H#$$ dook.

GO HEELS! COASTAL DIVISION CHAMPS IN ‘08! BEAT THE TERPS!
