Devastating loss?

Andrew Gardner will undergo surgery tomorrow on his torn labrum. Next time he plays, it will be in the NFL.

It would be hard to overstate Gardner’s importance to this team.

He’s not only Tech’s best and most experienced offensive lineman, he mentors the younger players.

That’s what I heard Tuesday from Austin Barrick and Nick Claytor, two guys who suddenly have become critical players.

Earlier this season, DE Michael Johnson said Gardner is the best tackle he’s faced in his career. (They go up against each other in practice). He also said Gardner set an example for the team when he embraced the new offensive system and blocking techniques CPJ brought in.

Now Barrick, a converted tight end, will be asked to step in at left tackle for Gardner. At 270 pounds he’ll be one of the lighter tackles around. Claytor is expected to start again at right tackle for the injured David Brown, who could return for the Miami game.

Claytor (6-6, 304), a redshirt freshman, and Barrick (6-3, 270), a redshirt sophomore, acquitted themselves well against FSU as they basically shared the right tackle spot. Can they keep it up playing the whole game as bookends?

Can this offensive line withstand Gardner’s loss?

It’s a huge question as we hit the homestretch. What do you think?

Inexperience at both tackles is scary … even more so with UNC having two weeks to prepare a defensive scheme and Nesbitt “iffy”.

Gardner was/is a stud. It will certainly be a tough loss to fill. Best of luck in the NFL.

In years past this would really hurt a lot. And it will hurt this year too. But I have a feeling the line steps up this week, as players will elevate their performance with Gardner not available to lead. If not, it is going to be a REALLY long afternoon on Saturday.

And rest up Nesbitt, we need that ankle healthy.

Go jackets!

I was embarrassed to see several on this blog refer to Gardner as a quitter yesterday. I sufferred a torn labrum in 2001 and I can tell you it is a VERY painful injury which makes it difficult (if not impossible) to raise your arm at times. Clearly, this would prove to be a detriment to an offensive lineman.

I have no problem with Gardner opting for the surgery rather than trying to continue playing in some diminished capacity and I hope he continues to be a team leader and mentor during his rehab.

Good luck and Godspeed Andrew. I wish you the very best with your career in the NFL.

I’m racking my brain to come up with a scenario in which Tech can pull out a victory on Saturday.

If Nesbitt was healthy (which seems to be as rare these days as picking a Powerball winner) and the O-line was at full strength, I would think that we have a good shot. But, instead, we will have a make-shift line and (at best) a hobbled QB.

Remember that it was with a healthy line and a backup QB that we were unable to score more than 10 points against a D-1AA opponent not that long ago.

A couple of weeks ago, I might have thought it possible for our defense to shut down the Heels. Successive games against UVA and FSU show that the D is susceptible to second-half collapses. The secondary is still young and paper thin. I don’t see us holding UNC under 28 points.

My suggestion is cut our losses for this game. Bench Nesbitt, Dwyer, and Thomas with hopes of having them healthy against UM and (possibly) UGA. Go to the pure vanilla option with no passes (ala Pepper Rogers) to give the O-line a chance to gel against a good opponent and Jaybo a game’s worth of full-speed game experience.

Who knows, maybe we’ll pull out a miracle?

If not, at least we will be optimally poised for a chance to add at least one more win and to position ourselves for a bowl game in our own time zone on green grass.

Fold the Tents has an interesting idea. I’m not sure I agree with it but it certainly merits some consideration. It would be nice to be at full strength and healthy for the UGA game.

Regardless, it’s all just talk because CPJ will never consider it. If Nesbitt can walk he’ll play Saturday. I just hope that decision doesn’t work against us in the long run. We’ll see.

On behalf of Jacket fans, I’d like to thank Andrew Gardner for his contributions to the program.

He has been an anchor (48 straight starts) for this OL and will be missed. Whether or not the back-up are up to the challenge remains to be seen.

Note the impact the loss of OL starters has had at UGA.

I hope that Andrew will be able to come out as a Team Captain for the Miami came and allow Jacket nation to give him the ovation he deserves. What better opportunity will Tech fans have to show their appreciation.

Get if the stands early on 11/20 and let this serve as a big dose of emotional momentum that can motivate our entire team. The way we pay tribute to our fallen warriors says alot.

Best Wishes Andrew.

Barrick has shuffled between what seems like three or four different positions and never complained, that’s the mark of someone that has the burning desire to play more than do what he wants on the field. I think he’ll have a very significant impact. 275 is small for an O-lineman, but he’s athletic and should be able to make plays and block well…after all that’s all he did last week against FSU.

Claytor and Barrick will be fine. I was at the game Saturday and have watched the replay and they both did a good job. Our problem on the O-line, like in the secondary, is running out of bodies. Barrick isn’t big but he’s bigger than David Brown. I think these are 2 guys that are starting to come into their own. My biggest concern is stopping the short passing game. Teams realize they can’t count on blocking all 4 up front on 5 and 7 steps drops so teams are going more and more with the 3 step drop and throwing the short curls and slants. Peterson jumped a slant the other day and caused the interception that Taylor got. We’ve got to get more of that. Heck we could’ve beat FSU by 14 or more if Burnett doesn’t drop one in the end zone and doesn’t get creamed by the LB on another INT deep in FSU territory. I’m thinking TECH over UNC by 8-9 points.

Larry,

Was wondering if you knew why Barrick was slated for left tackle and Claytor at right? I had always thought that Claytor was the heir-apparent to Gardner, and was thus the back-up left tackle.

Also, the general cliche is that the left tackle is the most important lineman for a right-handed QB (just as right tackle would be most important for a left-handed QB).

Is Barrick that good? Or is this a function of infrequent pocket-passing from CPJ’s spread-option attack?

Thanks in advance.

Our Oline will continue to dominate. No question about that. We lose one cog and another steps in. We don’t miss a beat.

Gardner did a fine job and earned a scholly. Good for you son, now step aside and let the healthy ones play. We need uninjured players to properly run this offense. If you’re hurtin’ and slowing us down, do what’s best for the Institute and turn in your playbook. Gardner knows that and did it. Good job young man.

Whatever happened to Old GT Nut? I miss the Nut’s optimism and explanations of how GT would win each game on its schedule. We need a refresher in light of the current injury situation. I think the offense will do just fine versus UNC. The young guys are maturing and being “coached up” very well. If the defense holds them under 24, GT wins easily. If not, another nail-biter.

I’ve had a great time reading all of the name calling (loser, coward, idjit, etc.).

Even I realize that the suggestion was an impossible one in practice. No D-1A HC (especially CPJ) thinks that way. I thought that it was a thought provoking suggestion.

I sincerely hope that we win on Saturday. Beyond that, I hope that we don’t get any more key injuries.

I think that a healthy GT squad has a VERY good chance to beat UM on November 20, especially considering that we’ll have a week and a half to recuperate and prepare. Add another key injury and our chances go down again.

That extra conference win (i.e., over Miami) would move us up in the conference pecking order sufficiently to keep us on this side of the country during bowl season.

All that said, NO ONE has bothered to try to intelligently dissect the UNC-GT matchup considering that Tech will be starting a hobbled QB, a make-shift O-line, and an inexperienced and thin secondary, and tell me how this team has a legitimate chance to go on the road and beat one of the hottest and most talented teams in our own conference.

Let’s hire a really good coach at Tech and let him make the decisions as to who should fill-in for Andrew, who should play for how many snaps at QB and whether we should use our timeouts vs. wait on TV breaks.

Just maybe we should circulate a petion/survey to decide if we should continue with our triple option or go with the single wing (my high school cloud of dust).

Wait——-I think CPJ wants 15 seconds of your time for his input——OK?—-really,he might make sense—GUYS!, c’mon——-

My best, and thanks, Andrew.

You play the game with the best guys you have. If they can’t go at 100% they should sit because there are guys behind them on the depth chart that can do a better job at 100% than they can at 70%-80% or worse.

And as far as UNC is concerned, I have every confidence that Coach Johnson will find a way to move the ball. And, our defense is healthly. Is it going to be a tough game to win - you bet. But, our guys will show up and will play to win.

With respect to hot teams, what do you think Davis is telling UNC - Don’t worry Tech has key people with injuries; or, The Tech team you are going to play on Saturday is dangerous and you guys better bring your A game?

Tents,

OK, you’re a good sport. Here’s your game breakdown:

UNC has lived this year by big plays and big TO’s. They lead the nation in interceptions, and had them at critical times to beat Miami and ND, otherwise they lose those games. We don’t throw the ball. They have lost to the same teams we have, and in a similar close loss.

They’re strength is big plays in the passing game, they don’t run well. We should be able to double cover Nicks all day and still stop the running game.

If we limit big plays by their passing game and fumbles on offense, this game is completely winnable.

UNC is good. But they’re nothing special.

It turns out I had a bad Type 2 SLAP tear. Take a cotton ball and puff it out as much as you can and that is what my cartilage looked like when they went in. I had surgery back in Dec 2003, so it has been almost 5 years. The doc who did the surgery was great, and I have been pain free since.

Thanks, gtNC. Nice to see that there’s a few folks reading these blogs that take them in the spirit that they are offered.

I always saw it as an exchange of ideas between people concerned about the same subject (in this case Georgia Tech football).

Usually, it just slowly degrades into name-calling and comparisons between who has the biggest stadium and who has the most national championships back around the turn of the century.

Truth is that the beauty of college football, or the reason I love it, is that it’s not played on paper. When you put a bunch of 19-23 year old kids on a field you never know what you get.

No doubt that CPJ will have our guys revved up and ready to take on the world. They will continue to do their best in whatever circumstance, and that’s all that we can ask.

I just can’t help but wonder if sometime in the past, some HC decided to hold out some key players in a game where they were facing long odds in order to better position the team for key wins further down the schedule. Just a whimsical musing. Even if they did, you’d never get them to admit it.

If our line is “makeshift” because of injuries, the EFFORT will still be there, and Paul Johnson will see to that. The defensive corps is going to have to PRESSURE UNC’s quarterback. The secondary must come up with stops, and even a couple of those trademark interceptions. BUZZFACTOR is right - play Nesbitt 4/5 of the time. UPDATE: Nick Claytor will be at left tackle, Austin Barrick at right tackle. It was listed wrong on the depth chart that came out this week. So, yes, Cary-Jacket, it makes more sense to keep Claytor at left tackle, where he has been No. 2 all year. But CPJ said they are mirror positions and almost interchangeable.

CB Jahi Word-Daniels is out for Sat. w/ the hamstring injury.

QB Josh Nesbitt went through a full practice and is close to 100 percent.

If I’m not mistaken a 3-star athlete in this offense is like having a 5 star in any other offense … GO JACKETS!

Just a word about Tech-Miami. I checked the record since 1970 and it appears that Tech leads 7-2. So, Miami gets the five star greats, but Tech seems to do more with the three star team players. I’ll stick with Tech.

And thanks Andrew for being a GREAT lineman, even though you played with grea pain — and were only a two star recruit — never would have been recruited by Miami or FSU.

Larry- Thanks for the update on Nesbitt. Folks can argue if they want but he is the most critical piece of this puzzle. Even w/ him at 80%, that won’t be enough to get the job done. We need him shaking and faking at full speed.

So Micheal Jackson will stop being White now? The High Yellows will not think they are better than the Blue Gums? David Scott will acutally use a picture of his REAL BLACK SELF on his Bilboards? Blacks like to be LITESKINNED and not hang with the DARKIES.

Andrew, I wish you the very best!!! There’s not a classier, harder working young man around. I enjoyed watching you in high school and college and I look forward to telling people I know you when you are drafted in the NFL. Best of luck Andrew—I just wish you would have been a Dswg!

Darren, I’ve had 2 surgeries over 3 years to repair a labrum that was torn off the bone 90%…………….I’m dam near like John McCain………..I can’t lift my right arm a full 90 degrees over my head. The surgery didn’t really take and the rehab was some of the most painful days I’ve ever experienced. I really hope this GT lineman doesn’t experience what I went thru. I’m a Dawg but I don’t wish this shoulder problem on anyone. I’m in pain every day and probably need a shoulder replacement at 44. Good luck to your lineman GT folks, and look what happened to us when we lost key Offensive and Defensive lineman. Absolutely sucks.

Good luck Saturday, nerds. Sure hope you don’t lose another game until we beat you down on the 29th for the …..what is it now as I am getting old…..eight year in a row? Now go ahead and win the rest of your games in the weak @$$ acc….it will make the beat down that much sweeter.

Larry,

Thanks for asking CPJ about Claytor and Barrick. With Barrick getting significant playing time, I guess it’s time to dust off the old “tackle-eligible play.”

One more question for some future blog: Would you ask Coaches Johnson and Wommack their preferences on using a 4-3 formation versus a 3-4 formation on D? I’m asking b/c Richard and Walker are both seniors (Anyaibe also) and DT is one of the thinner positions on the depth chart for Tech.

Ben Anderson and Logan Walls have been getting some snaps at DT this year, but no one will mistake them for Richard and Walker. Is a shift to a 3-4 alignment next year a possibility? Or will Lanier and Barnes be pressed in to duty as rookie DT’s along with Anderson and Walls?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Gato,

One good thing about 3-stars is that you get to keep them for five years. How good will Stafford and Moreno be at UGA next year? Oh, that’s right, they’ll be in the NFL. UGA got two disappointing seasons out of each one. In that time they lost to Kentucky and Vanderbilt. You’re right, 5-stars are definitely the way to go!

How about all of Miami’s fabulous defensive talent that went to the NFL in the past three years? What good did that do them? We beat them three (4?) years in a row! FSU has had some top players lately. How’d Weatherford work out for them? Have they had a better record than GT in the past two years?
