BCS/High Noon/Positive sign

Three quick topics today:

Tech is now 20th in the BCS rankings, one spot behind North Carolina. The winner of Saturday’s game figures to make a solid move upward.

All four ACC teams in the BCS rankings are in the same range; FSU fell to 22nd, Maryland is 23rd.

The Seminoles host Clemson Saturday in what will not be a Bowden Bowl. Maryland goes to Va. Tech with a chance to help the Jackets in the wild Coastal Division race.

Georgia Tech probably didn’t mind hearing Sunday that the North Carolina game will start at noon. Tech is 4-0 in noon games (B.C., Clemson, Miss St., Duke).

Raycom is doing the game and it will air on CW 69, WUPA TV in Atlanta.

Here’s what CPJ said about the ACC race and the Tar Heels, who were resting while the Jackets edged the Seminoles:

“I felt all along that we’ve just got to take care of our business and let it work out. If we can finish with only two losses in the ACC, I feel good about our chances. And we’ve got a huge game next week, a road game and possibly, in my mind, from what I’ve seen on film, they may be the best team in the league all around, so it will be a big challenge for us.”

Finally, I talked to co-offensive line coach Mike Sewak after the game b/c it looked to me like the O-Line took a big step forward.

Nick Claytor and Austin Barrick filled in well for the injured David Brown at right tackle, and Andrew Gardner “sucked it up” for his 48th straight start at left tackle, Sewak said. Gardner has been dealing with a shoulder injury. Center Dan Voss and guards Cord Howard and Joseph Gilbert all had their moments, and A.J. Smith took some snaps at guard.

This is what Sewak had to say after Tech ran for 288 yards, averaging 6.4 yards a carry, against the ACC’s top rush defense:

“We hit a couple of creases. We didn’t block everybody like they needed to be blocked and sometimes the linebacker overran the plays, but one thing is, we were in position sometimes to force the angles a little bit. Maybe we didn’t block ‘em all the time, but we were down the field, we were coming off the ball and we could force the angles and when the backs got it, we had an opportunity to hit it.”

Sewak noted that the linemen still aren’t doing a good job of picking up the backside linebacker.

“But (overall) I think we’ve done a better job as the year has gone on and we’re getting more conscious of where our mistakes are and we’re not making them as frequently.”

Sewak said the O-Line is progressing in small steps, not long strides.

“Obviously, in the fourth quarter we would have liked to have run the clock out and run the ball down the field and finished it off, and we will get to that point.

“But we’re not there yet.”

Look forward to hearing your thoughts….

I thought the O-line played well Saturday especially considering FSU is one of the better run stopping teams in America. We really only had one play get blown up but it was a big one on Shaw’s first play causing a fumble. I also thought Nesbitt was really good and was excellant on the corner with the pitch option. There were times when I really couldn’t figure out/believe what FSU was doing. They would put both tackles in the A gaps with the DE’s outside our tackles. We simply had to block down on the tackle and put the OT on the LB and there was nobody else left. I think if Nesbitt doesn’t go out we score 40. I’m very confident if Jaybo has to play Saturday but I don’t think UNC will give us the looks FSU did.

As I have said before, there is NO QB controversy. Nesbitt is plain and simple the starter.

That being said, dont judge Shaw completely by his performance. He came in on an impossible situation, and had the worst of starts, with the O-Line probably making their worst blocking in what was otherwise a superb game for them. I think they were a little rattled by Nesbitt’s injury too.

I would feel extremely confident if Nesbitt is 100% against NC, but I think we stand a decent chance with Shaw starting too. My only concern is how well he handles the away atmosphere. He has all the mechanics and skills, IMO.

What a huge win. The Jackets overcame History, injurys, and a big momentum shift. The O-line had a great game over all. I’m just glad to get this one under our belt. Can’t believe how this ACC race is still in the air. Week after week it gets more interesting. Thank you Jackets!

What a fantastic game…what a fantastic win. And what made it all possible? Getting rid of the worst coach in the history of the world…Chan Gailey. Dave Braine and Dr. Clough should be caned for hiring Chan in the first place, and then allowing him to destroy our program for 6 long years. Thank God and Greyhound that Chan is gone FOREVER….Thank God that we have DRAD and Paul Johnson. The only thing that sucks worse than having had Chan Gailey as a coach, is any fan that did not speak out against letting Chan destroy our program, or who tolerated Chan or defended Chan in any way. If you did, you suck. And if you still do, you are insane. Hallleeedamloooyah…our beloved Tech football is BACK.

Basically, the ball just bounced our way, Saturday (literally). We lose if the fumble doesn’t happen.

It’s a different game if Josh doesn’t get hurt. We were moving the ball and controlling the clock until Josh went out. I still can’t figure out the difference in Jaybo; he looked so good against Duke and Miss St. But he just could not move the offense down the field to at least eat up some clock, and maybe score some points. If that happens, then FSU’s last drive is either inconsequential or doesn’t happen at all.

Now let’s win out and then pull for the Canes to beat the Hokies.

How many times have we lost that type of game in the past? We continure to grow every week, and we fight to the end. The coaches’ confidence is being absorbed by the young men, and it’s only going to get better. I don’t think we will be getting too many doggies blogging this week, and I hope our own “naysayers” will stay away, also. Go Jackets-

Let’s see….

Wow! What a thriller!!! Al Ciraldo would have been proud.

Good 60:00 effort by the Jackets. Now, let’s take it up to Chapel Hill.

Kudos to FSU for a well-played ballgame. They will be better when we play them next year in Tally. Fortunately, so will we.

Early reports are that Nesbitt will be all better (x-rays were negative-no fractures) and starting in CH. Then we get half a bye week to heal up before Miami.

Of course, we’re going to need help. FEAR THE TURTLE! GO DEACS!

M—you kept calling out the SEC for having no D. Florida’s D looked just fine to me. UGA, not so much.

The FSU D obviously wanted to ring frosh Jaybo’s bell and shake him up coming in the game, and did so on his first snap. That probably limited his effectiveness the rest of the game. Hopefully, he’ll be able to shake that off and not take it to heart too much. I think he’s mentally tougher that some other QBs we’ve had recently, not mentioning any names.

Lastly, opening line is UNC minus 4. We’ll see how the money goes this week. Remember that last week opening line was Tech plus 1.5 and closing line was Tech minus 2.5.

Anyone know how UNC looks on the injury front?

Kudos to the offensive line for their work last Saturday. I loved seeing Nick Claytor clear the way for Dwyer’s second touchdown run. I’m curious about what happened on the play where Shaw fumbled. Was there a missed assignment or miscommunication or what? Larry, did Coach Sewak offer any thoughts about that play? Oh, and hope you feel better now “ACC Stinks”.

ACC Stinks – I have two numbers for you to ponder: 49 and 10. Figure it out. If you’re having trouble, get someone who went to Tech or Florida to help you.

m – You are an idiot and your act is getting really old. If you think Chan Gailey was the worst coach ever, you obviously don’t remember a guy named Bill Lewis. Yes, Gailey underachieved with some talented teams and he never beat UGA but we went to a bowl game every year under Gailey. By contrast, look at what Lewis did to our program and what he left O’Leary to work with after his departure.

I am thrilled to have CPJ as our coach and I think he may be the best since Bobby Dodd. I am truly excited at the prospect of what our program may become under Johnson.

Please, give the Gailey nonsense a rest. Let’s enjoy living in the present instead of dwelling on the past.

Too bad you can’t count Miami’s wins when they were part of the Big East…No need to fret however as Yech did not contribute to that atrocious record in BCS games…If you want to see dominance look at Yech on the blue carpet…maybe you girls could go back to artificial turf and install the blue carpet so it would be just like home….

First, you idiots need to keep up. The ACC has broken the tie with the Boise Bowl. There will be no trip to the blue carpet for ANY ACC team.

All that matters right now is to WIN AT CHAPEL HILL. Lose and the we’ve had a surprisingly good year. Win and we have a real chance at something very special. I’d love to think that we could go into the Thursday night game in Atlanta with a chance to win our way into the ACC Championship game. Talk about an electric crowd!

Actually, I think that the snub by ESPN/ABC is a positive thing for this team. They play much better when they are underdogs and they are hungry. Maybe being relegated to a noon game on Raycom will put a chip on their shoulders.

One more big game to go, guys. BEAT UNC! Whatever it takes, lay it on the line, but come home from Chapel Hill with a “W”.

ACC Stinks – Here’s a few more numbers for you since you seem to enjoy it:

28 – The number of years since UGA’s ONLY national title even though you have had countless top-five recruiting classes since then.

4 – The number of teams from the SEC currently ranked in the BCS Poll. Interestingly, the same number of ACC teams are ranked in the same poll. Are the SEC teams ranked higher? Yes. Is the SEC a stronger conference this year? Yes, but not by much. The Sagarin rankings list the SEC as the #2 conference in the country and the ACC as #3. Just Google “Sagarin Football Rankings” to verify for yourself.

13 – The number of spots UGA has DROPPED in the rankings since the beginning of the season.

29 – The number of places Tech has risen in the same rankings over the same period. Even though you’re still ranked higher than we are, I like our trend better (and I see it continuing).

And finally…

1 – The number of consecutive wins Tech will have against UGA after November 29th.

LET THE NEW STREAK BEGIN! Paul Johnson is going to OWN Mark Richt.

Your chance to put it out there first that Yech will win the ???bowl.

UGA is the 3rd best team in the SEC so now they think that other conferences should not be allowed to participate in the BCS. They can’t even win their own division in the SEC but they feel they should have a right to play for the championship. Why? You had a chance against Bama and us and you couldn’t close. Two conference championships in the last 25 years and they act like they’re an upper echelon school. Pathetic!

But they sure know how to celebrate when they do actually win. Maybe that YouTube video of last year’s end zone dance party will entertain them while the big boys play in the championship game?

By bb

ACC Stinks-

Here’s a few other numbers for you.

SEC vs BCS OOC: 5-6 ACC vs BCS OOC: 11-7

The ACC (the best of any conference BTW)has won as many as the SEC has played. Which conference stinks???

SEC vs Sun Belt, WAC, FCS, CUSA, MAC and FBS independent schools: 27-1

The SEC’s supposed dominance is built on playing very weak OOC schedules. When they do play decent competetion, they are exposed as being just like every other BCS conference.

Top to bottom the ACC has nothing to be ashamed of this year (after a couple of down years) and is amoung the best conferences in the nation (check the Sagarin Ratings for an objective opinion on this). That the ACC doesn’t have a team in the top 10 and a national contender is the only legitimate knock on the conference, but having 10-11 teams in the top 50 is incredibly strong.

Florida has one loss last time I checked. Seems like that one loss is to Ole Miss. I think a team named Wake Forest beat Ole Miss, so whats your point? Hell even Duke beat Vandy. Even Miami played Florida alot closer then UGA did.

This year you and your SEC brotheran can lay off we are the best label. The Big 12 is hands down the best conference this year. Other then Florida and Alabama any team in your conference is beatable, that includes your lovable Bulldogs. Better watch out or you will be on the losing end of another game in Lexington.

Nesbitt played a fantastic game, and I too believe it would have been a route if he was in for the whole game. Going into next week, I hope CPJ will look at the injury and make a quick decision. He needs to know the condition of Nesbitt, and his potential to play next week. I hope he doesn’t wait all week to see if he’s capable of playing. First, he could put Nesbitt in a situation where he gets hurt even more, if he’s not ready. If he is ready, the team will be better off, considering UNC is no patsy. However, if Nesbitt is a low probability, then give Shaw all of the practice time. It’s obvious that he wasn’t ready to play Saturday.

Sagarin is fed by raw data only and for the past five years has proven to be FAR more accurate than either of the main human polls. Again, your lack of intelligence precedes you.

I find it comical that a UGA fan would want to spend his day on the blog of his in-state rival but I guess it makes sense that you’d rather be around fans of a team that is over-achieving instead of over-rated.

ACC Football is getting back to where it needs to be. This fact will be evident after the bowl games. Everything that needed to happened to the Jackets this season is happening. Adversity in VT, GW, UVA games have given strong lessons of becoming a champion to this very young Team. A Great coach in CPJ has placed the mindset of how to be winners in these extremely hungry Yellow Jackets. And as hard headed young men usually learn, a hard head leaves a soft behind or loses to teams you should have beaten. Well now we travel to UNC with the schooling we need to understand playing balls out for 60 minutes is the only way to win games and win games that you need and/or should. GT there is a great piece of hardware awaiting your ring size and you must earn it in order to possess it. So get focused and handle your business.
Now to all of the GT Fans. We are 0-6 for the season in showing our support for our beloved Jackets. We talk a big game and as ridiculed by many we fail to put people in the stands like we need to. I sat in Section 211 on Saturday in a sea of FSU fans will a great view of the entire stadium and could only find one section that had only TECH fans. The student section. Pitiful. If you want a top class program that wins championships you need to view the growth from a seat at Bobby Dodd instead of your living room. We aren’t even gathering at local bars or eatery’s. C’mon people these are great times on the FLATS get in the game.

I would strongly suggest that the ATHLETIC ASSN.consider using the tear-away jersies that were used years ago. This would reduce the amount of cheating in the games. An example was M.Johnson being held by his jersey from behind by a UVA player. No penalty was called on the play ang VA. scored. Tear-away jersies do work well to reduce cheating (holding).

From my perspective, it appears that UNC has the inside track to the ACC championship game. They have 4 conference games left, 2 at home, 2 on the road. After playing GT at home, they go to MD, go to NCState, and finish at home against Duke.

They are in the same position vis-a-vis regarding the conference competition as GT. Their 2 losses were VT and UVA. We know that one of those will finish with at least 3 losses since they play each other.

UVA was on a roll until this past weekend. VT is hobbled at the QB position. Hard to see either of them coming through the rest of the year undefeated.

Maybe the better way to put it is that the winner of the UNC/GT game this weekend has the best shot. Unfortunately for my alma mater, I haven’t seen much that gives me much confidence that we will come away from Chapel Hill with the win.

Really? Last Saturday I saw an offense that could seemingly score at will against one of the better defenses in the country.

It all starts with the O-Line. If they have a good day, the offense will have a good day. Having a healthy Nesbitt will make it better, but it all starts with those guys.

Now…teams are starting to exploit our weakness at linebacker. They need to step up and give our D-Line some time to get to the QB.

UNC will be a tough, tough game for GT. But we are perfectly capable of coming away with the win.

ATLNative, how can UNC have the inside track on the coastal? Statistically speaking it is impossible for them to be, at this point, the favorite to win the ACC. They need the exact same circumstances to happen, UVA/VT lose and they win out, as us, but where we need 2 wins, they need 4.

SAME exact situation, except we are two weeks ahead, and two wins better. Even if you count Duke and NCstate as wins, @ Maryland and GT at home is harder than @ UNC and miami at home.

What do you need to see, ATLNative?

We have won 2 of 3 on the road in the ACC, and we could have/should have won the other one. We dominated FSU for 3 quarters when we had our starting QB in the game.

I think we have at least a 50/50 shot this weekend, and with CPJ, I think it is probably more like 60-40. But I agree that we need Josh back at QB, and if we could get our db’s back, that would give us an even better chance.

What have you been watching this year? What does “I haven’t seen much that gives me much confidence” mean?

What I have seen over the last two games is a defense that has all but given up double digit leads in the second half.

I’ve also seen an offense that is capable of scoring and controlling the clock, but is subject to being shut down at a moment’s notice (one turned ankle). We need Nesbitt performing at full speed and it appears that IF he’s back, he will be slowed.

Our kick coverage has been dodging a disastrous runback all year long. Our kicker is our best tackler.

Our talented D-line has been kept off the opponents QB. Some say that it’s because the opponents’ O-line has been holding and get away with it. Doubtful that the officiating will change.

Now our secondary is banged up, thin, and playing with all underclassmen.

The UVA debacle and the disappointment from that game is still hard to get over. Win that game and we are in the driver’s seat. We were a 2 TD favorite going into that game for goodness sake.

I thought that we had seen the last of the Chan Gailey-type blow-ups. Evidently, we still are quite susceptible to them.

On the other side of the ledger, UNC and UM are coming on strong after slow starts.

Practice Update: The big news is that LT Andrew Gardner could be done for the season, torn labrum in his shoulder.

Might have surgery. Story will be on ajc.com soon….

Nesbitt plans to practice tomorrow, according to CPJ.

S Dominique Reese practiced but CB Jahi Word-Daniels remains out w/ the hammy….

REMEMBER!!!! UNC has had two weeks to prepare…at unc….butch davis…ned I say more. If you think we can just take care of business and move on then you better wake your -sses up!! This will be the toughest game and could be, perhaps, the lowest offensive output this season (even lower than Garner Webb). I’m tired of folks looking past this UNC team. “Beat Miami and we win conference”….. I just hope CPJ is more passionate about UNC than I am b/c folks…we are in for a butt whipping if we aren’t healthy and our heads are down in Miami.

With injured and hobbling Nesbitt, we are toast anyway. We have to find a way to keep him healthy. He’s the engine to this offense w/ his size and speed to break tackles in the backfield.

**M, Bill Lewis was without question the worst coach GA. Tech has ever had.

He took a team that won the National Championship and proceeded to lose more games than Tech had ever lost.

I sat throught the worst beating by UVA in Tech’s history thanks to that guy.

He didn’t have a clue. At least with Chan we did win on average 7 games a year.**

By SEC does not dominate ACC check the numbers

Hey ACC Stinks- just a little fact for you here. In games this year between the ACC and the SEC. T he ACC is 3-2. And yes alabama beat the second worse ACC school Clemson and yes UF beat a young Miami by less than they beat UGA. Miami is the fourth best team on the Coastal Side of the ACC. Yes Duke the fifth best team in the Coastal beat Vandy the team tied for second with UGA in the SEC East and yes Wake Forest beat Ole Miss who beat UF and yes GT put 38 on Miss ST. who has one of the best defenses in the SEC. So I say the difference is not much at all and if you take out UF and Bama the ACC is better and I would go so far as to say that if you matched up the ACC and SEC 1-12 the ACC wins more games. Auburn UK Tennessee Miss. ST. South Carolina Ole Miss Arkansas would not be favored and maybe even UGA gets beat. We will find out come the end of November. How bout that.

ACC Stinks, you’ll enjoy Sports Illustrated’s latest weekly conference power rankings.

http://www.fannation.com/siblogs/thesweep/posts/19845

In case the link doesn’t work, i’ll paste the key points here:

“So, this week’s discussion focuses primarily on the No. 2 slot, where the SEC and ACC are in a much closer battle than those who support the nation’s most hallowed (read: obsessive?) conference care to concede.

The truth is, some of the SEC’s traditional powers are pitiful right now. At this point, Tennessee couldn’t score a touchdown against eight defenders. Auburn probably couldn’t, either. LSU’s vaunted defense has given up 50 points twice this season, and its offense doesn’t really scare anyone.

If Tennessee or Auburn were in the ACC, they would both be in the lower echelon of that league, too. The ACC’s middle-to-upper tier teams have proven they can beat the SEC. Duke never trailed in a win at Vanderbilt (which has three SEC wins to its credit) and Georgia Tech routed Mississippi State 38-7.”

*To SEC does not dominate ….. * , I’m all about the SEC being much closer to the ACC than it realizes too, and will always cheer for the ACC. But keep in mind the record is actually 3-3 in conference matchups. You forgot about how South Carolina unfortunately beat our worst team, NC State. The end of the season games will put us on top though!

Ok, I admit that I am one of those that is still not sold on CPJ. He is average at best and that is why he was at Navy. His poor decision to have Nesbitt in there, who obviously is a slow decision maker, shows poor judgement. We all know that Shaw should be in there, but we are not man enough to admit it. And the “white-out” is just plain stupid. We don’t fill up our stadium except when visitors show up and there will be a lot of Miami orange that night, which be be embarrassing. And, we have not beaten anybody. The entire nation remembers that we only beat Gardner-Webb by 3 points and except for a last second fumble, would have lost to FSU. So, the jury is still out on CPJ. If he does not win out, we need to look for a upper tier coach.

Wow GT86, “Tech needs to look for a upper tier coach?” Who do you Tech fans think you are? Texas? Florida? USC? Tech has potential to be good and you have one of the best coaches in the game. Don’t worry every sportscaster in America agrees with me. And you are complaining? Who the hell are you to complain about being ranked 20 in the BCS in a coaches first year especially after Gailey. Also, every coach has to come from somewhere. Lets not forget that Spurrier, who dominated your rival dawgs when he was at UF came from a Duke program he turned around much like Johnson did at Navy. And you complain. Who the hell are you?
