The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
To keep its ACC title hopes alive, Georgia Tech must beat Florida State. The Seminoles are ranked No. 15 in the BCS, and they’re the first ranked team Tech has faced all season. The Jackets, coming off their first home loss, are a slight 2 1/2 point favorite.
Corey Clark, of the Tallahassee Democrat, answered six questions in advance of Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Bobby Dodd Stadium:
What’s the biggest difference between this year’s FSU team and the mediocre versions of the past few years? Is FSU back?
They’re winning close games. That’s the bottom line. Of the 17 losses Florida State had in the previous three years, 15 of them were decided in the fourth quarter. When the game was on the line and the outcome was in doubt, the Seminoles just weren’t making those clutch, late-game plays that good teams make. Now they are. During this current winning streak, FSU has put together big drives in the fourth quarter to either win games or cement them. Quarterback Christian Ponder isn’t the next Charlie Ward or Chris Weinke, but he has shown an uncanny ability to play his best when it matters the most.
As far as FSU being back? Slow down, big guy. I don’t think the Seminoles are close to where they were in the late 1990s, but this program is definitely on the upswing again. After 17 losses in three years, the players are starting to believe they are supposed to win again. And that’s huge for a team with so many underclassmen.
Can the Seminoles’ young offensive line handle Tech’s strength, a D-line featuring ends Michael Johnson and Derrick Morgan?
Probably not. There’s no shame in that, though. I don’t know if the 49ers could handle that front four. What FSU will have to do is move Ponder around and not just let him sit back in the pocket as a bunch of true freshmen try to block guys that will be playing on Sundays next year.
I think Ponder’s mobility will be a key. He ran for 144 yards against Miami’s defense and has made big plays with his feet all year. If he can make a couple of long runs early in the game, that might slow down Tech’s pass rush just enough for the Seminoles to make some plays downfield in the passing game.
What is RB Antone Smith’s status for the game and is he the key to FSU’s offense?
Antone Smith plans on playing. He injured his elbow and his ribs in the win over Virginia Tech, but said he expects to be ready to go by Saturday. And they’ll need him because he is playing, by far, the best football of his career. He is running harder than he ever has and seems to have an extra burst through the line of scrimmage - provided there is a hole. He’s not going to bounce off people like Jonathan Dwyer will, but he has enough speed to run by anyone on the field. I don’t know if he’s the key to the offense or not, but it might not be a coincidence that the one game FSU lost this season (12-3 to Wake Forest) was the game in which Smith had just eight carries for 24 yards.
There’s been talk that FSU’s speedy, aggressive defense could get caught overpursuing and be burned by the triple option at times. Is that a real concern?
Honestly, I think the biggest concern is the interior of FSU’s line being able to slow down Dwyer. I think FSU defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews will have his linebackers and D-ends coached up well enough that they’ll stay with their assignements and not be too aggressive. But the interior of FSU’s line was gashed in the first half against NC State and also gave up a couple of big runs to Virginia Tech. If the Seminoles’ D-tackles can’t get a push at the line of scrimmage, then Dwyer could have a very big afternoon.
Talk about Ponder’s development and whether you expect D’Vontrey Richardson to play some as well.
Ponder is coming along. He’s not a great passer yet by any means. But he also seems to make big throws when it counts - it doesn’t hurt to have a 6-foot-6 Greg Carr at wide receiver either. When in doubt, he can just drop back, loft a pass down the sideline and say “go get it big fella.” And the big fella usually does. What’s been most encouraging for FSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher is the fact that Ponder hasn’t thrown an interception in either of the last two games - after throwing six combined against Wake, Colorado and Miami.
As for Richardson, I’m not sure he’ll play or not. They might have him come in for a play or two like they did against Virginia Tech (he finished with four rushes for 21 yards), but I don’t think he’ll get any extended time unless Ponder gets banged up.
Who has been most responsible for FSU’s incredible third-down defensive stats? CPJ was blown away by that stat.
Yeah, what they’ve been doing is pretty amazing. I don’t remember a team, at any level, allowing just 17 percent on third-down conversions halfway through the season. It’s unreal. Virginia Tech was struggling so much in the second half last week, I half expected them to start punting on third downs. It would’ve saved time anyway. As for why FSU is so good on third down, I’m just not real sure quite frankly. Andrews does like to blitz, which obviously hurries everything. But I think the biggest thing is what they do on first and second downs. The FSU defense is always one of the leaders in the nation in tackles for loss and that can put intense pressure on an offense when it’s facing third-and-11 or third-and-14.

Interesting comments. Thanks Larry. I definitely think GT can win if the offense clicks better than it has recently. I’m also looking for the defense to rebound and play more like it did earlier in the season. Let’s show FSU and the ACC we have some pretty potent weapons on offense as well.

I thought GT was suppose to have all these great minds, but you can’t come up with an original thought.
Well, we are ok with it, it comes with being the leader.
And the loss last week? That was exactly “in character” for Tech, I don’t know what Bisher was talking about. HAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA Stop, yer killin’ me.

I am somewhat disappointed in the “whiteout” gimmick. I thought we were better than that too. I will be at the game but I probably will not be wearing all white. I have GT in my blood and soul, I don’t need a gimmick to support my team. Buying a closet full of jerseys and sweatshirts is for the DAWGS.

I don’t like the “whiteout” either but I will be there and if the team/coach/ad wants it to be I will be in white. I think it will show CPJ that the Tech fans can be into the game and have the passion he has been looking for.
As for the line I watched the FSU vs VT ganme again. If the Tech line cannot block better than it has recently it will be a horrible game for the offense.

We might get blown out this week. The line has to play better, the defense has to play better. I want to think we’ll win…. but the remainder of the schedule is tough, super tough.
But honestly, I’m amazed at where we’re at, considering the lack of depth on this team. I think they’ve done a great job and I hope people realize that, even when we lose this season, we are building for the future and hopefully, learning from our mistakes.

I definitely think that Ga. Tech can win this game with Fla. St. The game will problably be a close game either way. The key for Tech is going to come down to protection from the O-line. The battle for the game will be won or lost there. Josh is not getting enough time to run his plays. Timing is everyting for this offense. Also, they have got to take care of the ball. There is little room for error when it comes to turnovers. Go Tech!

The O line has got to play better, the O as a whole has to click much better than the last couple of wks. We can’t have a bunch of 3 & outs.
Personally, if the O ain’t clicking I think that we need to give Jaybo a shot, he played real well in his couple of games.

Parity is the reason FSU is not like the team in the 90s. I am not sure that a coach that recruits well and wins in the 90s like a Miami and FSU can win now unless Fisher brings that quality to the system others could not. It was not uncommon for both those schools to have second string quarterbacks getting looks and playing in the pros. FSU would almost equal the entire draft for the rest of the ACC in numbers of players. If the Falcons played in the ACC I could coach them to a championship. Bowden did the Bear Bryan thing and read the Bible to mama getting lots of great players which was a cut above Miami and its gangster atmosphere. Bowden’s methods still are somewhat effective as seen in Georgia and certainly healthier for college football. It is just the numbers are not there any more and only so many mamas can send their sons to FSU so the talent gets leveled out. It took FSU time to figure that out but they are doing it, and Tech will be around in the fourth quareter and we will see who this year is the better coach, Fisher or CPJ.

Why is everyone bashing the O-line? What about the fact that the D could hit Peerman behind the line, but couldn’t tackle him for less than 8 yards? Anyway, there is lots of room for improvment and for the first time in a long time I actually expect us to keep getting better.

Do you people really think UGA invented the (color)out when they blacked out last year? Seriously? Thats just how stupid UGA fans are to think that that was the first time it had ever happened… I have been a student at tech since 2006, and my first year we had a “goldout” for one of the espn games. I’m pretty sure most every team in the nation does it. Its about getting your fan base notice on national television. When you have a bold color across the whole stadium it makes more of an image for your school when people are looking on tv. Hell, we do it in basketball all the time too… they gave out gold shirts for our game against duke in spring 2007 when we rushed the court. Its all about image on national television. So UGA fans stop feeling so superior… you really aren’t…
All tech fans need to be at the game tomorrow and the “white out” thursday game, and for that matter every game… I understand that our base is spread out around the country and our students are generally not the most supportive in the country, but seriously… if you are Tech alumni, you call one of the most historical fields (the winningest and oldest) home and get to sing one of the best fight songs (and one of the most historical as well) in the nation on a weekly basis. You are a part of the Georgia Tech family and should come out and cheer on our teams. I can tell you I am very excited to be on the road to becoming a GT alumni, I plan on getting season tickets to football and basketball as soon as I graduate.

This has been around FOREVER. Penn State has had white out games for years. GA Tech has had gold out games in the past. Other schools have done this type of thing for years.

I wish he had waited until AFTER the FSU game to talk about the whiteout. If we win - sure use it as a gimmick and promote the ESPN game.
BUT - after FSU crushes us it just looks foolish to draw attention to a fading team that will just get waxed again on National TV. Embarrassing.
Write this down - GT will not win another game this year. Everyone else in the schedule is IMPROVING while we fall apart due to lack of depth.
This does not mean CPJ is a failure - it just means we need more recruits. Next year will be better.

Why white? Penn St is known for their whiteouts. Why not gold? Its kid of lame anyway, but if you’re going to do it, why not use a more original color? I doubt it will work anyway. The class of ‘45 and all of them won’t buy new Tech gear. And geez, there’s not that much Tech stuff that is white. WHY NOT GOLD???
By Corey

Zach- Its because when we have gold outs it has historically failed. First we have 100 shades of gold out there on GT gear. To do this we would have to pass out gold shirts to all 50,000 people at the game. 2nd- our Greek system generally dresses up for the games (most wear white button up with gold and blue ties or something like that). 3rd- White is much more visible at the game in my opinion. Its a school color, why not… I kinda wish it was for this weekend and not miami… FSU has gold, so why not white it out and wear the all white uni’s.

Gold doesn’t work because there are too many different shades of “gold”… take last year’s uniform versus this year’s, for instance. White is white is white. It’s a more opportune color for uniformity, and that’s the point of the “ out”. Also, both fight songs mention the color white before gold… just throwing that one out there for the trivia nuts.

Larry Corey Clark said:
If the Seminoles’ D-tackles can’t get a push at the line of scrimmage, then Dwyer could have a very big afternoon.
Apparently Mr. Clark from Tallahassee has not seen GT’s offensive line play this year. What push? All FSU will have to do is wait for a few linemen to flop down on the ground and then just step around them to get to Nesbitt or stand there and wait for Dwyer. Jon is being stopped by opposing defensive linemen way too often. That means that Nesbitt is blowing reads or our O-line is failing to block. Nesbitt might be missing a few reads but most of the time poor blocking is to blame. I know the offensive lineman is the most underappreciated guy on a team, but poor blocking is wasting the hard work of the whole offense to learn and execute Coach Johnson’s new offense.

First of all, Mark Richt didn’t invent anything. Fans have for years worn the team colors or a specific color at sporting events. ESPN made it a big deal.
Everyone’s looking for an edge. UGA seemed to get it, but only because Auburn wasn’t as good and ESPN sold it to the public.
Hey, a white out is great for GT on a Thursday prime time game. The white will be a clear separation from I usually see at Tech, which is a ton of visiting fans in big games. At least this way the TV will show the pockets of visiting fans as opposed to making people think the stadium is pro-UM.

Since the beginning of time, Fans have been dressing in colors. Peewee teams on up have done it. But, UGA was the first team in Georgia to go all black. What is ground breaking? Sure Richt got the idea from somebody, it was not exactly rocket science, but it was not an obvious direct copy from the other college in the state who did it 10 games ago. (notice I did not say rival, because rivalries field competitive teams.)
Bottom line, if UGA had not done it, your AD would never have thought of it.
What is really funny, somebody mentioned that you are still paying Gailey and O’leery. Add Johnson to that list, his gimmick worked for 7 games, but teams have figured it out. I predict you you finish with 3 losses this year, 7 next, and Johnson is gone after 2010.

Uh, Len…we’re not still paying for O’Leary, never did. He quit, wasn’t fired or released. As for the white out, I don’t think D-Rad needs to copy UGA. He ran a pretty tight ship and figured things out at LSU as far as gimmicks go and exciting the fan base.
If I’ve learned anything about college football, it’s that it ebbs and flows. Even mighty Michigan probably won’t make a bowl this year. It comes around for everyone. At some point, UGA will hit the downslope too.

I’m in student government at Tech. Allow me to shed some light on the White Out issue.
The student leadership organizations have tried to organize a “Gold Out” for the last couple of years, but it’s always failed since yellow and blue seem to appear more often than WHITE and GOLD (ya know, our SCHOOL COLORS?!!).
So the white out is meant to accomplish a two things:
A) Get the fans to respond to the team and coach to unify everyone in the stadium. (like an actual fanbase)
B) Get White back in the rotation of colors worn for our football team. (since the team wears it anyway)
Just a reminder for anyone that may have forgotten…Yellow, Blue, and Black are NOT Georgia Tech colors. WHITE and GOLD.
This is what the SCHOOL, the TEAM, and the STUDENTS want. Please DO IT!
PS- Next on the agenda? Destroy the “mint julep” alumni culture in the stadium and replace it with a stand-up-and-yell mentality. This is Southern football, not the Preakness.
By AlabamaRamblinwreck
November 1, 2008 11:36 AM | Link to this
Yes, Wreck’em Tech, I know what you mean by “mint julep culture”. I am a 1985 alum, and I had never sit in the lower west stands until last week. There were ANCIENT (almost dead) people there. They barely moved, and they were offended that people stood up and yelled. I tried yelling at the referee when he missed the holding on MJ during UVA’s touchdown pass, and I was verbally scolded for yelling too loud!! I didn’t use profanity (and I wouldn’t). I was just into a game like college football and GT fans should be. Tbese folks should get a pulse and wake up. Our recruiting is always going to suffer until these “mint juleps” get excited and do some noise making!!
One more thing: If you are going to bring Darby (Stinky Popcorn, and I mean stinky) to a game, you need to eat it away from people. I sit behind an old couple that had this stuff, and it smelled like dirty, mildewed, stinky feet!! It was awful, and it lasted the entire first half. I know that people within 15 feet could smell this terrible smell. You should stay home if you are going to not move and cause other people to have to deal with an odor from HADES.
Now I feel better!

* AlabamaRamblinwreck & Wreck’em TechI* Your posts take me back to 1991, Tech-UGA game. My brother and I were in the West Stands. The Bulldogs had the ball on our 10 yd. line, right in front of us. We started making noise [so they couldn’t hear the signals] like everyone else does. Those “elderly” Techsters & their wives turned around and looked disapprovingly at us, as though to say: “Behave yourselves. We are not hooligans here.”

I wish we were back in the SEC.We will never get anywhere with the ball & chain ACC officials have shackled us with in FB & BBall.

Big Bug I couldn’t agree with you more. In fact, I have written to Dan Radacovich to try and get out of the ACC. The SEC is undoubtedly the best choice, but I think they are full. The Big East would be better than the ACC for us. We could take Boston College’s place.
I am down in the dumps after the bad calls in the UVA game which cost us the game together with those in the VT game with the same result probably costing us a championship. It is demoralizing to me and can’t be good for the team’s morale going up against FSU which has a psychological edge anyway with its long won streak against us.
I hope I feel better after today’s game, but I am very pessimistic.

Tokyo, I know, for some reason I just felt like raggin’ the Jackets to day. Tech has been impressive this season, I did not expect much. Good luck you guys.
