Do you like shorter games?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia Tech had just nine possessions against UVA.
One reason was the Cavaliers’ ability to control the ball (34:18 to 25:42 edge in time of possession).
Another reason is the change in NCAA rules.
Trying to shorten games, the NCAA this year changed the timing rule when a ballcarrier goes out of bounds. The game clock stops only temporarily now — it starts again on a signal from the referee. The only exceptions are the last two minutes of each half.
The other major change is the 40/25 second system. After a play ends, the offense has 40 seconds to snap the ball. The play clock is set at 25 seconds after injuries, penalties, change of possession and other administrative stoppages. In the past, offenses had 25 seconds to run a play, but the play clock didn’t start until the ref’s signal.
Taken together, the effect has been shorter games and fewer plays.
The NCAA News reported that games are averaging 3 hours, 8 minutes — compared to 3 hours, 22 minutes last year. And the total number of plays has dropped from 143 to 135.
CPJ came out against the rule changes before the season. He hasn’t wavered.
“What it does is it takes plays out of the game, and more so for teams that run the ball,” he said Wednesday. “The clock still stops on incomplete passes but it doesn’t stop anymore when a runner is out of bounds. We’re not as efficient here on offense either by a long way this year, but we’re probably running 10, 15 less plays a game.”
I remember when the NFL changed its out-of-bounds clock rule, and I hated it b/c it meant less football. (Though the NFL actually stops the clock the last 5 minutes of the game, not just the last 2).
Now the NCAA has followed suit. The changes aren’t as bad as the ones the NCAA instituted two years ago, which were deemed too drastic and overturned.
But fans are still getting less football for their money.
Do you want to go back to the old rules, or do you like shorter games?

Games need to under be under 3 hours. Like the 25/40 clock. Agree with goldarchie on stoppoing the clock on out of bounds or least extend the two minutes to five in each half. Of course the length. of TV timeouts could be cut but that is not going to happen. Hate it when the commercials are over and they give you another 30 sec. of analysis before getting back to the game.

I wish they would stop all of the tv timeouts. Let tv/radio take their commercial breaks when the following things happen: 1. Team timeout 2. Official Review 3. Injury Timeout 4. After a team scores 5. End of Qtr 6. End of half
Otherwise, keep that official looking guy with the red hat on off the field. Change of posession, first down, after a kickoff but before the next play, all of those should be stopped. I’m tired of it. That’s what is making games longer, not all of these clock rules, etc.
And for those that say there is too much money in it…The money will come back!

How did the shorter game kill us Saturday ?
When we were ahead 14-3 the clock did not seem to be a problem. If we had taken care of business it would not have mattered at all.
Dropped passes and stupid fumbles are not caused by the clock.
If anything - a longer game would hurt us due to our lack of depth. The defense was done by the start of the fourth quarter. Under the old rules UVA would have had time to ram it down our throats again, maybe twice.
It is not the defense’s fault - they are short several players and the offense could barely stay out there long enough for the D to even get a drink on the sidelines.
when is the stupid probation over so we can recruit a few more players ?

These new clock rules are screwy.
Why can’t they just keep them the same as ever?

Why do they insist on shortening something that only lasts 12-14 weeks a year anyway!?!?!?

I don’t see why we need more commercials on the TV broadcasts. Why doesn’t ESPN or RayCom or whoever do what OPEC does? When you don’t like the price you’re getting, just create an artificially low supply to drive up the price. Maybe the TV guys should say ‘We have X minutes worth of commercials in 30 second blocks, if you want to advertise with us, you’ll pay Y per block.’ The advertisement will be more effective because there won’t be very many. That’s just my opinion, and I don’t know much about economics other than not to believe what anyone says about economics unless that person has been in business for more than 20 years and been very successful. Econ is so complicated you can take the numbers and make them say just about anything you want them to say. Of course you can always go to the games, DVR the TV broadcast and fast-forward through the stupid Brooke Shields VW commercials later.
I think we will like the new clock once CJP’s offense comes around (meaning we BLOCK SOMEBODY). It will be hard for other teams to come back if we get a lead because a dominant running attack can kill so much time. An explosive offense is useless if it is sitting on the bench watching GT’s offense pick their team apart 5 yds at a time. Of course that cuts both ways.

The NCCA does everything it can to make college football unwatchable. It started with the boondoggle called overtime, then gerrymandering to clock to please the networks. Add to that the semi-pro teams that pour tens of millions into their programs to bring imbalance to the game. To top it off, about one in five college football players could actually get into college if they didn’t play ball and you’ve got what passes for today’s amatuer athletics.

Good stuff, Legend … Three things:
First, they need to do something with the running out of bounds rules. Wider college hash marks lead to more plays ending up out of bounds.
Secondly, it certainly has not took a toll on scoring. Look at some of the over/under totals .. so many more games have totals over 70 this season than in years past.
Finally, are you allowed to make predictions on this thing? Or are you like Herbstreit and can’t make picks on games he’s covering? That’s dumb, by the way.

Whoops! My post got somehow mixed with the previous post from another fan. My error or a clitch. Here is the correct post:
I don’t like the new changes.
For those of you who wish to express an opinion about these rule changes and/or were as upset at the ACC Officials in the Virginia game as I was, you can write to:
John Swofford, ACC Commissioner P.O. Drawer ACC Greensboro, NC 27417-6724
or to Mike Fin, Coordinator of Officials at the same address.
You an also email them at theacc.com and click on contact us.
I have done so and would urge all you Tech fans to do the same. This is a democracy and, not only the government but organizations such as the ACC should respond to public opinion, in my view. The ACC has been somewhat responsive to previous fans’ complaints. They did institute Official Review which sometimes helps, but, as in the Virginia game, it simply gives the Replay Officials a just to confirm the previous bad call to make the point that they don’t make mistakes. They did finally replace Fred Barakatt, but Duke and the other Tobacco Road teams still seem to be greatly favored in basketball. A key problem is that the bad call always helps one team, so the vote is split 50/50. The complaining teams and fans are called “whiners” and “making excuses.” My position is that it is worth the time and effort to express our opinions to the conferences and the NCAA to insist that the fans deserve fair and competent officiating. Each time should be given a fair chance to win.
The Motto should be:
MAY THE BEST TEAM WIN!!
The Motto should NOT be:
MAY THE TEAM WHICH THE OFFICIALS FAVOR WIN!!

In Tech’s case the new clock rules are a double edged sword. When they can run the ball, move the chains, and score it is all good for Tech. It worked really well against all of the patsies on the schedule. Good teams that can control the ball on Tech and score will win everytime. Just one more reason when it’s all said and done that CPJ’s offense will produce no better result in the win/loss column.

Larry, how many plays do they average in NFL games? I liked it better when each team averaged about 70 plays per game. I think we’re getting shortchanged. Have the coaches considered speeding up the tempo on offense to get a few of the plays back? We’re usually breaking the huddle with 20 to 25 seconds on the play clock. Go ahead and run the play with time to spare unless you’re trying to eat up the clock. I’m ready to see Tech start scoring 40+ every game. Speed up the tempo, wear out the defense, and light up the scoreboard!

I don’t like the rule changes. Not so much due to the length of game thing—I don’t have a good enough sense of time to tell a ten minute difference in a three hour game—and I’ll let the coaches argue about it hurting the running offense more, I’m not an expert about offenses anyway—However, it does bother me that both college football and basketball seem, every year, to look more like the NFL and NBA. There’s a reason why I think college sports are more fun to watch than professional ones—because they’re DIFFERENT. We need to keep it that way.

Bad luck in scheduling, because it looks like they are good again. 9/11 cancelled our game with them early when we were hot and they had a young QB and were not. Bowden wouldn’t give us a decent rematch date. We had to play as I recall right before UGA, their QB had warmed up, and we lost. I think it’s a disgrace that schools continue to increase prices to their fans and alums while giving them less for their money all in the name of advertising revenue for television. I like longer commercials and fewer plays.
I work for ABC/ESPN and our stock is down. We need some more commercials.
Next year we will negotiate with the NCAA and advocate cutting down to 2 time outs per half, and allowing one challenge per game. And we’ll let clock run when score delta is greater than 14 points.
The result will be much quicker, with quicker gratification.
You’ll like it.

I don’t like screwing with the game…PERIOD.
Running out of bounds should stop the clock.
If they want to shorten the game, quit calling some of the stupid ticky penalties on the offense that don’t really affect the play.
For example, the “illegal formation” penalties when an OL is a half inch too far off the line. Who cares if the tackle is “covered” or not?
Another one is the picky little false start penalty when an OL flinches. For it to be a false start, it should be something really obvious and consequential (i.e., if it really draws the Defense offsides).
Another way would be to quit whistling the play dead when there is a real false start. Let the play run (and take time off the clock) and let the Defense have the option of taking the play or the penalty.
On punt or kick returns, if the block in the back is nowhere near the ball and is inconsequential to the play don’t call it. The precedent is already set with the non-call on a Pass Interference if the ball is “uncatchable.”
Bottom line, when the officials get involved, it slows the game down. Take a hard look at the way that officials are making calls. The game is becoming overly officiated and clinical. Let’s get back to playing old fashioned FOOTBALL where the refs were not celebrities (TAKE THE DAMNED MICROPHONE OFF OF THE REF. LET HIM GO BACK TO HANDSIGNALS, PERIOD.) I think some of those guys just like to hear their own voice on the PA system.

I wish we could get to vote on TV execs (they’d all be voted OUT) and refs (same) instead of politicians next week.

And PJ is a crybaby - the game is the same length for BOTH teams - if you cannot win with the amount of time you have the ball in the game then you cannot win, period!

Who wants the shorter game? Not the players, not the coaches, not the fans, not the sponsors. Who?
