Key matchup

Tech’s defensive line, the team’s greatest strength, lost the battle up front against Virginia.

You know Michael Johnson, Vance Walker, Darryl Richard and Derrick Morgan, all NFL-caliber players, are eager to dominate once again. And they will have that opportunity against Florida State’s extremely young line.

The Seminoles start true freshmen at left tackle (Andrew Datko, 6-6, 276), right guard (David Spurlock, 6-5, 286) and right tackle (Zebrie Sanders, 6-5, 280). Center Ryan McMahon (6-3, 282) and left guard Rodney Hudson (6-2, 282) are highly regarded sophomores. They’ll get help from a massive tight end, junior Caz Piurowski (6-7, 275).

This article by my friend Corey Clark, formerly of the Gwinnett Daily Post, gives us a better look at that talented but green offensive line.

It should be noted that FSU has given up just 12 sacks this season, tied for fourth-fewest in the ACC.

Tech managed just one sack last week and generally failed to make Virginia QB Marc Verica uncomfortable in the pocket.

FSU’s Christian Ponder is more mobile — he ran for 144 yards against Miami — and has made big plays with his feet all season. Regardless, Tech must ratchet up the pressure and harass Ponder in order to win.

Coming off their worst showing in ACC play thus far, I expect the D-linemen to bring it.

What kind of performance do you expect?

Now I’m not suggesting that Tech go back to the Tenuta all or nothing defense, but perhaps we should bring the line backers a bit more than we have. If they are double teaming Johnson and/or others, the line backers ought to be able to get to the qb more than anyone did against Virginia. Got to have your top game Saturday.

Who knows what to expect. I didn’d see UVA’s OL pushing GT’s DL around at will either. Also, PJ said he can’t fix the fumbles and Nesbitt said “fumbles are just part of the game”. Hopefully they will both re-think their statements and get the fumbleitis worked out. Two fumbles against FLA St., game over.

I hope we make some defensive adjustments to stop the short passing game. UVA killed us with short passes all day. If our defensive front doesn’t generate some pressure we will be in for a very long day.

Something that I saw a lot of during the UVA game was holding by UVA O-Line that wasn’t called. This prevented many sacks that Tech would have had if the refs were doing their job.

I was a bit disappointed that PJ didn’t make a big deal of it during the game. He should at least have said something during half time to the refs.

Blogger — CPJ showed his displeasure very clearly on the third-quarter TD pass. He was on the field after the extra point, letting the official have it. Not sure what other conversations took place during the game.

Again, while Tech made a big deal of that non-call on Michael Johnson, no one blamed the refs for the loss, they all said, “It was on us.”

I have watched the replay and the ACC officials really did SUCK in this game. The Virginia offensive line made more tackles than their defensive line. Their TD should have been called back due to a FLAGRANT hold (on MJ) that virtually everyone in the stadium and everyone in TV land saw clearly. The bad spot that gave them a first down (challenged by CPJ) instead of it being the deserved 4th down cost us a TD instead of a possible field goal. On the last drive to try to tie the game, there was FLAGRANT pass interference that was not called. Yes, we should have won the game anyway, but why do ACC officals have to be SO PATHETIC???? And, as always, thank GOD and Greyhound that the worst coach in the history of college football is gone forever!!!

People making a big deal of the fumble topic need to get real. Do you think they don’t try to fix it every chance they get? Do you think Paul Johnson is an idiot? Your statements seem to indicate that you think that he’s too stupid to realize that fumbles are an issue with his Offense and Football in general. The man knows this, some know-it-all blogger doesn’t change that reality. The point of his statement was that they are doing what they can and past a certain point it is just going to take time. It takes a good year or two to get this offense down ‘pat’, based on his other teams experiences. It is what it is…and what it is, is something they work on every day…but there is no cure for it beyond working on it and preaching it every day…which they already do. This offense is going to cause more fumbles than other offenses, but the yin to that yan is we will have a lot less interseptions. Historically his teams have a lot of turnovers the first year. This isn’t rocket science and there is no mirical cure. Time and experience is what the team needs. Did you expect us to have a better record than we do, before the season started? We are way ahead of the ‘experts’ predictions…why can’t you just allow the team (and yourself) to feel good about the reality that we are over-achieving?

Stop complaining about officiating, just as I tell my UNC pals. VA beat us fairly when we were ahead up there the week before. Our defense fell apart, period. VA is coming on stronger than people anticipated early in the season. We don’t have as high illusions of greatness as GA Tech in football, so when we do win, it means more to us. You guys sound like the Falcons each year when the season starts. Supposed to be good, and when things don’t go well, not all your fault, but someone else’s.

Larry-Nice article-This could be the difference in the game. I think the front 4 got their pride stepped on Saturday. I look for them to have statment game, which everyone will look at. I was at the local watering hole with a friend of mine who graduated from PITT and he made the comment more than I did about the Officials. No excuse or whinning just the facts. It was obvious and even the announcers for ESPNU had said they could not understand why flags were not being thrown-does not change the fact it was a lost. I’m a big Tech fan, but after last week, vs. UVA, this week just does not really matter all that much. GT just blew it last week.

By StingDoc

October 29, 2008 12:15 PM | Link to this

I have reviewed my DVR of the UVA game trying my best to be objective, and I am very upset at the officiating. I counted 4 bad calls favoring UVA to none for Tech. Tech got the better of the close calls 2 favoring UVA to 4 for Tech, but these didn’t nearly compensate for the bad calls. As I posted earlier, the 3 big ones were: [1] Michael Johnson was clearly held by #61 on the 34 yd TD pass to make the score UVA 17 GT 14 in the 3rd Qtr., 10:22 time left. Both ESPNU announcers, Doug Bell and Charles Arbuckle, agreed. Coach Paul Johnson was furious at the officials as were the fans who saw the replay on the Jumbotron. Not only should the TD have been nullified with a penalty, but MJ was going to sack the QB possibly even causing a fumble as he later did. [2] Peerman #37 clearly stepped out of bounds at the 4 yd line as he dove for the 1st down at the GT 3 yd line with the score tied 17-17, 4th Qtr., 3:55 left. Numerous video replays clearly showed it, and both ESPNU announcers emphatically agreed. No official review, but CPJ challenged. The refs upheld the bad spot giving the Cavs a 1st down on the GT 3. Both announcers said “WOW!!” Also, Tech lost a critical Time Out. [3] D. Thomas was clearly interfered with on a long pass on 3rd & 11 from the Tech 40, 4th Qtr, 2:09 left, UVA 24 GT 17. The UVA player had his hands all over him. No flag. Thomas nearly caught it anyway.

The other bad call was in the 1st Qtr, UVA 3 GT 14, 5:35 left. GT #59 was clearly held allowing Peerman to gain 8 yds. This was not as big as the other 3.

Others feel that UVA held more often, but I couldn’t definitively see that on DVR.

For those of you who agree with me, go to theacc.com, scroll down the left to “contact us” and email them your outrage, as I have.

UVA played well, but in my view, these 3 bad calls cost us the game. We had 3 turnovers which hurt, esp. the one on the UVA 5 yd. line, but UVA also had 3 which hurt them as well.

What do you think?

the lack of depth in the secondary hurt us against VA… nesbitt missed a few reads and didnt throw the ball away when he should have… not sure jaybo would have done any better.. nesbitt did have some first downs with his legs that jaybo def. could not have pulled off

We should seriously drop the complaining about the D-line being held. Yeah, they were held all day. One hold was so obvious that everyone in the stadium saw it but the idiots with the yellow flags didn’t and that play resulted in a TD for UVA. Same thing happened last year against BC (with a bunch of other blown calls). What was done about it? Nothing. Same will happen now. Unless you can come up with some great idea on how to humiliate the ACC into taking action, you just look like a whiner. The team should send the tape in, make a formal complaint and move on. And to everyone saying “I’m sure GT didn’t hold anybody”, you didn’t see the game. That line didn’t hold anything. Or block anything. If the blocking had been better, there would have been many big gains on offense and we wouldn’t be here complaining about the holding. Honestly, I think the holding was just as bad in the Miss St game, but since the offense took care of business, it doesn’t matter.

D-line should be better this week, no excuses. Of course, if the offense holds on to the ball and controls the clock, it would help a lot.

At the NCAA Div 1 level, professionally competent/consistent officiating should be a given. When obvious mistakes are made (we all make them,) they should be reviewed and rectified. This did not happen Saturday at the Dodd.

Flagrant missed calls were a big factor in the game. Just the facts. Period.

Jacket turnovers were also a big factor, and weak pass defense. CPJ and team will certainly work these areas hard.

Hopefully the ACC athletic commissioner, who was at the game and interviewed by Wes Durham at halftime, will work the officiating issue just as hard. I’m sure his expectations equal those of the teams and fans.

StingDoc, a thorough and impartial analysis and post. Great idea on the acc.com email.

Should Auburn turn the page, guys such as Muschamp and Graham will be on the radar. And there also is scuttlebutt that Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson and USF’s Jim Leavitt could become factors. To win this game, the Tech offense will have to break the 2 TD per game funk that they’ve fallen into. They have only scored more than two TDs against MSU and Duke (discounting Jax State). I fear that FSU’s team speed on defense may give us fits.

The key may be holding FSU under 20 and hoping for some points off of turnovers. We certainly won’t be able to survive any cheap “give-aways.”

Much will depend on how the team responds to last week’s loss. Will they come out fired up or will the sleepwalk continue?

If Tech wins this one, look for a 21-17 score.

Bad news is that they are averaging 28 points in their 5 games against D-1A opponents and have been held under 20 points only once this year (against WFU). NC State held them to 26 in their last road game.

Hard to be optimistic about this one guys. The team is going to have to show something that we haven’t seen in weeks (or possibly even at all) this year.

Another factor is that Tech has never beaten a Bobby Bowden FSU team. We’ve come within an eyelash on a couple of occasions, only to watch it evaporate.

If I were forced to put money on this one, I’d have to take FSU and lay the points.

I hope I’m wrong.

To dawgy….Tech did NOT forfeit ANY games, so quit repeating this untruth. I understand why you don’t like Coach O’leary because he made a habit of beating the crap out of you little puppies…just like Paul Johnson is going to do. Just remember…yes you did beat Chan Gailey 6 games in a row (and would have beaten him a 100 games in a row if he had stayed) but the last time we had a real football coach he beat you 3 out of 4…so get ready…the smackdown of the dawgs is coming. And thank God and Greyhound that the worst coach in the history of the world is gone forever.**

Don’t like to complain about officiating but here is a quote from foxsports.com writeup

“Johnson complained that a lineman grabbed him around the neck on Verica’s second TD, and the replay seemed to back him up. No flag was thrown.”

Gailey would have beaten Georgia a couple of years ago in Athens, when Tech was 9-2 going into the Georgia game; but for a Reggie Ball fumble and an outrageous official call. That ruined Gailey’s best season and eventually cost him his job. There’s no need for the Gailey bashing; he was bashed by Ball and those officials.

I’ll address these one at a time…

Cremins: UGA has never been on probation for football. Next time you spew untruths like that, please cite them. But, Tech HAS been on probation. Recently, I might add. SOOO, tech has been on probation more than Georgia. Nice accusation though, mathlete.

Dogcatcher: Ahem, Joe Hamilton, Reuben Houston, Jerrard Tarrant, etc. etc. etc. As far as “other” people calling us names, I don’t really worry about it because it’s only the tech fans that do that from behind their little keyboards. Everybody (including tech fans) knows that a techie doesn’t have the sand to call a dawg those names in person.

“m” - yes, I know tech didn’t forfeit any of the games during O’Liar’s crooked tenure. However, the NCAA forfeited the games for tech. And I seem to remember Richt spanking O’Liar and Dork Godsey on his first try. O’Liar saw the writing on the wall and bolted for the Domers… Upon which he was unceremoniously fired for lying his Irish arse off on his resume. Typical tech S.O.P., though, so you can’t really blame him.

Calvin - nice try blaming the firing of Gailey on refs. What else can you blame on refs? Your acne? Your virginity at age 40? Your residence in your mother’s basement? Oh, and I like how you blamed both Reggie’s fumble AND the officials “bad call.” What exactly was the blown call if he did, as you declare, fumble? Just stop, you’re embarrassing yourself.

Dogcather: Please tell me that what you wrote was just rhetoric. The majority of Georgia football players arrested during Richt’s tenure have been for drinking underage. Wow, pretty nefarious. Tech had a program-wide academic cheating scandal that was no doubt ignored if not condoned by O’Leary. If you can’t see the difference between the two, then you are incredibly stupid. Or you’re just a spindoctor in the mold of Obama. Either way, you’re a lowlife.

Here is a follow-up to my post above about the bad calls that cost Tech the game:

THE QUOTES OF THE ESPNU ANNOUNCERS, DOUG BELL AND CHARLES [CHUCK] ARBUCKLE AT THE TIME OF THESE THREE BAD CALLS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

[1] Michael Johnson was clearly held by #61 on the 34 yd TD pass to make the score UVA 17 GT 14 in the 3rd Qtr., 10:22 time left. Not only should the TD have been nullified with a penalty, but MJ was going to sack the QB possibly even causing a fumble as he later did. It was a flagrant, obvious foul which the officials should never have missed.

Paul Johnson was getting after everyone….THE OFFICIALS!” The Replay is shown. “This is why he was so upset on that Touchdown Pass. HIS MAN WAS HELD!” “Look here. #61 [UVA] has him [Michael Johnson, GT] on the outside. He doesn’t let go. HE WAS HELD.” “They showed that on the Big Screen on the Scoreboard, and the crowd did react” The fans are booing loudly. Paul Johnson is visibly upset.

* MY SUGGESTION: The ACC should allow coaches to challenge key plays like this for official review; an obvious game-changing penalty which the officials missed.*

[2]Peerman #37 clearly stepped out of bounds at the 4 &1/2 yd line as he dove for the 1st down at the GT 3 yd line with the score tied 17-17, 4th Qtr., 3:55 left. They’re measuring for a 1st down, Chuck, but I think his right foot may have been on the chalk there, before he dove.” “I think you’re right, Doug. He stepped out. Let’s see the Replay….OH, HE STEPPED ON IT! Now, if they’re looking at this up in the booth, they can review it.” No Official Review by the refs. Ref: “Georgia Tech has challenged the Spot.” “That’s a smart play by Coach Paul Johnson, because ON OUR REPLAY, HE WAS OUT OF BOUNDS right about the 4 yard line which would leave him short.” 2nd Replay is shown. “RIGHT THERE!” Replay clearly shows his foot on the sideline. 3rd Replay. “This will give you a better angle. HE WAS OUT!!” “The other angle showed it even better.” Several additional replays show conclusively that Peerson stepped out of bounds at about the 4 & ½ yd. line, short of the 1st down. “So I think that’s going to be brought back. The Replay Officials are watching the same Replays you are watching.Ref: “THE PLAY STANDS AS CALLED!”WOW!! WOW!!” Instead of 4th down, UVA gets 1st & Goal at the GT 3 yd. line & scores the game winning TD on the next play. GT loses a critical time out on the coaches challenge.

[3] D. Thomas was clearly interfered with on a long pass on 3rd & 11 from the Tech 40, 4th Qtr, 2:09 left, UVA 24 GT 17. The UVA player had his hands all over him. No flag. Thomas nearly caught it anyway. “The crowd wanted Interference.” Fans are booing loudly. “The crowd is wanting a Flag!

Once again, unbiased, objective, respected, TV announcers point out the obvious bad calls to the entire nation, and nothing is done to correct this by the ACC. It is beyond intelligent comprehension.

MY SUGGESTION: NATIONAL OFFICIALS TO REDUCE THE APPEARANCE OF BIAS WITHIN CONFERENCES.

For those of you who agree with me, go to theacc.com, scroll down the left to “contact us” and email them your outrage, as I have.

I think we need to focus on FSU and forget about Va game refs. That game is over, it is time for our D line and O lines to step up and play like they did at the beginning of the season.

Also, let’s cut the crap about Gailey and give support to CPJ. He has done a heck of a job considering where we were predicted to be this year. I think it was ESPN that had us picked to be 3-9. New offensive scheme, new defensive scheme, we are most fortunate to be 6-2.

To the team, play like you absolutely want it! To the fans, cheer like you absolutely want it!!!

Go Jackets.

Sting Doc: You spent a lot of time on your post, and I applaud your efforts. I can’t say that I disagree with you. However, we lost the game and that’s not going to change. Figure out a way to get some 3rd down stops, throw a pass at times when you don’t have to, hold on to the darn football, and maybe we’re up by 2 TD’s and no one cares or has to waste time whining about the refs.

Go Jackets!

Your writing and punctuation is really kinda pitiful.

Meantime your numbers are incorrect. It is 4-2; And the REAL and by far most meaningful number that matters when it comes to comparing UGA-GT football is 59-36.

Also Mr. Jarrell…I am a UGA alum and long time season ticket holder…and you my friend NEVER attented college period. And you sure as he— cant affore the 10.000 dollar donation required to get on the waiting list for UGA tickets. The 40.00 for a single game GT ticket….maybe!!!!

wow, I gotta say, we’re all a bunch of queers. We haven’t beaten Georgia in 17 years. We forfeited the three games we “won” under O’Leary’s scandalous tenure. Georgia actually has more nationall championships (5) than we do (1). We should all just kill ourselves.

FSU is NOT the FSU of old just yet. Remember that VT lost both of their QB’s and up to that point, the game was tied or VT was leading by a FG. After that, the players mentally broke down and allowed FSU to roll over them. They are good but not that good. If we can control the fumbles and mental mistakes, we should be able to hang with and even beat them at home. Let’s get ROWDY and LOUD!

PS: UGA bloggers trying to do math on a GT blog is like me trying to pole dance at the Cheetah club. These blogs become more of a joke every time out. Remmind me to spend my time reserving seats to watch the games and less time trying to argue w/ a bunch of coulda shoulda woulda folks. Cheer on your d-mn team, move past this UVA garbage and get to a bowl. Then ESPN can eat crow and we can begin to look forward to great things next year. Regardless of the UVA game, GT is going to be a great team in the future if CPJ stays. PERIOD. So stop whining. Geeze, look at me. I just spent 2 minutes typing up this garbage so I guess I should go practice what I preach huh? Good night and good luck. See you all on the Flats Saturday. GO JACKETS! FAWK GAWGA.

GM Thanks for the comments. I agree that if we are far superior to the opponents and are ahead by 4 TD’s, we don’t have to, as you put it, “whine” about the refs. We are not in that superior position. I feel that there is a serious problem with the officiating, and if the fans want to bury their heads in the sand for fear of someone calling them a “whiner,’ then the problem will never be addressed much less corrected. Instead, those fans tend to trash their own team and their coach for losing rather than supporting them. I consider that as misguided focus. I agree with you, however, on this:

RambleON!!! said that “Georgia actually has more nationall championships (5)” than Tech (1).

First, please do spell checks on your redneck, illiterate, uninformed posts. Here are the facts, once again:

GT listed as NC in 1990, 1956, 1952, 1951, 1928, 1917 = 6 National Championships

UGA listed as NC in 1980, 1968, 1946, 1942, 1927 = 5 National Championships

http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/iafootballpast_champs.html

The only consensus, unanimous National Champion from the two schools was Georgia Tech, 1917!

Now, take your trash-talking, foul mouth, redneck body back to your trailer and try unsuccessfully to make love to your cousin-wife after which you can console yourself by admiring your 6th Grade Diploma on the wall.

Not understanding the comment made to the paper that fumbles are part of the game, so GT fans are suppose to accept the 2+ fumbles per game? I’m in broadcasting and if I stumbled every time I am on the air, I would be replaced. Isn’t that one of the reasons you have back-up quarterbacks? NO unacceptable, quit fumbling, 2 losses are enough..
