Vintage FSU defense

Georgia Tech looks to get its offense back on track after scoring three points in the final three quarters Saturday.

It won’t be easy against FSU, ranked No. 15 in the BCS. The Seminoles’ defensive numbers are striking.

The Seminoles boast the ACC’s top rushing defense (79.9 yards per game). They allow the fewest total yards (247.3 per game). They allow 16.6 points per game, third-fewest in the league.

After sacking Virginia Tech QBs six times on Saturday, FSU has 22 sacks this season. That’s one more than Georgia Tech and one fewer than ACC leader Virginia, which took the top spot by sacking Josh Nesbitt four times on Saturday.

FSU’s junior defensive end, Everette Brown, had three sacks against the Hokies. Safety Myron Rolle, corner Tony Carter (9 career INTs), MLB Derek Nicholson and LB Toddrick Verdell also are standouts.

Bobby Bowden (12-0 alltime against Georgia Tech) spoke to the Tallahassee Democrat about the challenge of facing Tech’s offense.

After practice Monday, CPJ made it clear that the offensive struggle on Saturday stemmed from a bunch of factors, not just fumbles. He talked about missed blocks, dropped passes and penalties, to name a few.

Assuming the defense bounces back — Saturday was the first time Tech gave up more than 20 points — the Jackets won’t need an offensive explosion. But they will need to execute a lot better and take care of the football.

Can they do it against this FSU defense?

There is going to be alot of FSU fans at the game Sat. We will have to make some noise and show our support. Stand up so the people behind you will have to do the same, and make people get into the game. If you blog on here, BE AT THE GAME! I’ve watched some FSU games, and they are suspect to some big plays. This may be the week everything clicks! Go Jackets-

I would be one of those FSU fans but I will traveling this weekend and just as the last time when FSU rolled into ATL left with a W. I do not see anything different. FSU is TOO fast and disciplined on defense to allow this “option” football beat them. Tech relies on the run and FSU leads in STOPPING the run. Look out turnovers again this week.

Should be a great game against FSU. I live down here in FSU country and look forward to playing them again and finally beating them. Florida State is very talented but I think GT matches up well with them. Finally, Larry, I’m ready to see another offensive explosion by GT.

I too must agree-I think we match up very well against FSU-I know they are fast but most FSU teams seem to always lack the discipline to maintain during a game-I’m not by any means taking away from the speed nor ability of the FSU defense-but merely the discipline-as always I think the key will be the turnovers-I also think Tech is going to have to pass as I see FSU loading up the box. This should be a good match up-it is time BB drops one to us! GO Jackets- THWG

The game plan against FSU should be fairly simple - HOLD ON TO THE BALL!!!

You can’t win Pop Warner games consistently when you average three fumbles per game. Against a defense like FSU’s, fumbles will kill us.

Tech has had trouble with hard running backs all year. Dixon at Mississippi State was one of them. In Virginia’s situation it also had the offensive line that blocks exceedingly well and was large. When they try to cheat the quarterback throws a slant right behind the defensive line and linebackers who are out of place trying to help tackle the running back, who is usually running wide taking the linebacker with him. Florida State has always had our number and if Gailey was coaching I would bet the bank on State, but he is not. This is going to be a real test and outside Ga. the hardest team left on the schedule. I am worried big time but think we might muster it with CPJ.

You want him to change a system that he is known for and was hired to implement. He has spent many many years making small changes to his system to adjust it as needed. I think it’s safe to say that he will not be changing his system in any obvious way, but he always is looking to tweak it. It is his system. He is our coach. It is our system.

I don’t think he was making excuses. I think he is known to be a real straight shooter. Someone asked him a question and he answered it as honestly as possible. He almost always blames himself first. He is not a finger pointer to avoid blame. He gave the real answer to an actual question.

Refreshing and unheard of in the PC crap we know as America these days. The truth.

Tech needs to worrry about Tech and just execute. Just like the last few years we are not that far off from being a top contender. One difference is our passing completion ratio has to get in the 60% range if possible. Also move the chains and eliminate the turnovers. This scheme can quickly turn the A-backs into slot receivers. The Virginia game was more winnable than it felt as the turnovers and loss opportunities is what hurt. UVA though is a good team. The ACC is tough top to bottom as Duke goes into Vandy and beats what was a ranked team who took the Dawgs to the end in Athens.

NoFear- that is kind of interesting - a Georgia vs. Florida Saturday. i wonder if that’s happened often. we’ll have to dig into the media guide for that.

i think a big key for the Jackets on offense will be first down, and I will get into this at some point later on in the week. perhaps even tomorrow. coach johnson was raving today about florida state’s third-down defense - the Seminoles are allowing just 17.4 percent of third downs to get converted against them. that’s ridiculous.

“that statistic jumps off the page at you,” Johnson said today. “it tells you you’d better not be in a lot of third and longs, i can tell you that.”

they’re so much better than the rest of division i-a that the second-best team (auburn at 25.4 percent) is closer, in percentage points, to 28th place than they are to FSU.

if tech can get three yards on first down, that opens up second down, which can get you into third and short rather than third and medium or long.

what happened to m?

and i ask this out of curiosity - what would make someone go to a blog for georgia tech fans and type in the georgia fight song? that just seems like a real waste of time. that’s the type of person who, in high school, stuck his leg out in the lunch room when people were walking by with a tray of food to make them trip.

How Funny. A GT supporter comes to this blog to BEG GT fans to show up at their game Sat vs FSU. Hey, your little crackerjack stadium seats all of 50,000 and the only way it’s full is if FSU fans show up. How many did you have for the big showdown this past weekend against Virginia? What, 30,000 tops? If it weren’t for FSU, Clempson and Georgia there are seats in Historic Bobby Dodd Stadium that would never have a fanny in them.

Bobby Dodd Stadium does indeed seat only 55,000 people, which is admittedly smaller than Doak Campbell, Memorial, or Sanford Stadiums. But Grant Field has seen as many national championships won as the other three combined. Maybe that’s why so many Noles, Tigers, and Bulldogs come to fill its seats.

Glad you were amused there, Captain. You fail to understand that the fans who show up for GT games are almost entirely made up of students and graduates (alumni - look it up). Most GT graduates venture out of state and country to take important technical jobs that require both intelligence and tenacity. On the other hand, Sanford Stadium fills to capacity because most of those ‘fannies’ occupying seats have never even set foot on the UGA campus - probably could not tell you where the library was located. After the game is over they all go back to their shanties to get even more drunk. I would much rather have 30,000 to 45,000 true fans than a bunch of trailer dwelling, booze gulping, beer chugging, foul-mouth high school drop-outs cheering on my team.

Injury update: CPJ said at his press conference today that he thinks safety Dominique Reese will be back for Saturday’s game, but that corner Jahi Word-Daniels is more of a “reach.”

Neither is practicing today. CPJ said he hoped Reese would practice Wednesday. He also mentioned the possibility of safety Morgan Burnett playing some corner this week.

On FSU’s defense, CPJ was blown away by how good the Seminoles have been on third down. They’re allowing teams to convert 17.4 percent of the time. The next best team in the ACC is Boston College at 34 percent. Georgia Tech is allowing 39.5 percent after Virginia converted 11 of 18 Saturday.

Historian,

Wow, you are ignorant. After all that talk about how Tech fans get it wrong, (You even went as far as to make personal attacks on the random guy. But hey, I guess thats what 15 year old kids, or at least people at that level of maturity must resort to, to make themselves feel better about their pathetic existence.) you don’t even check the facts that you so proudly claim to protect. I suppose you were too busy worrying about how many of Richt’s felonious pups won’t make the trip this week due to boozing it up and making fools of themselves downtown. That is completely understandable. That being said, “historian” UGA has exactly one majority national title, yes one…in 1980.

1927- 9-1…lost to Tech in Athens to end the season, voted number one by a couple of small time polls. Illinois is widely recognized as the true Champion, having been voted number one in 5 larger polls

1942- UGA and Ohio St. split the polls

1946- UGA voted number one in ONE OF SEVENTEEN POLLS (Williamson). Pretty sure you have to give that one to ND who was number one in 11 polls or maybe even Army who was voted number one in the 5 others.

1968- UGA goes 8-0-2 then gets beat in the Sugar Bowl by Arkansas, voted number one again IN ONE OF 17 POLLS, this time Litkenhaus. Pretty sure you have to give the nod to Ohio St on this one, as they had 13 number one votes, Texas had 3

1980- Cant argue this one, Herschel and the boys took 10 of 17 votes.

So historian, in the future if you are going to attack someone via internet message, at least get your facts straight. Sorry to dampen your spirits, as Im sure this was the highlight of your day. We all know you probably aren’t man enough to call anyone a Loser in real life.

I see the blog is back to the normal subjects…whose stadium is bigger, who has more national championships, who lives in trailers, etc.

The topic (way back up at the top) pertains to Florida State and their defense and how Tech will deal with it (or not).

Looking back over the season record (exclusing FCS teams), we’ve only scored more than 2 TDs against two opponents, MSU and Duke. There’s no way that we’ll beat FSU with less than 21 points on our side of the scoreboard.

The topic of turnovers has been thoroughly addressed. Whatever we do, we have to cut them out. But that’s not going to be enough to beat FSU. We need sustained drives ending in TDs.

On the other side of the ball, we will be facing what will likely be the fastest and most athletic that we will face all year.

I was concerned with the matchups going into last week’s game and my concern proved accurate. This one’s even tougher.

FSU’s defense will be flying to the ball. We’ll need to use more misdirection to keep them honest. The traditional way to attack a quick defense is to negate their speed by running straight at them. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen our O-line blowing any defense off the ball.

Nesbitt’s decision-making will need to be sped up a notch and (obviously) better.

I’m hoping that CPJ has some surprises for us on Saturday or it’s going to be a long afternoon.

Not a beeliever - yet,

That is a very lucid comment! It is very nice to finally see some intelligence on this blog. You are correct when you cited GT’s scoring record; however, if the Yellow Jackets are able to use both pass and run plays I think that the FSU defense will be caught off guard more often than not. Just think….FSU has not seen an offense like GT and GT has not yet seen a defense (except UVA, maybe) like FSU. It should be a very good game and go down to the wire. I really expect GT to win it. I really do. I’d just like to see more pass plays and I believe that CPJ has something up his sleeve for this one. GT 23 - FSU 17

We’ll see what unfolds on Saturday.

Honestly, I don’t look for CPJ to radically change things this week, and I don’t mean that in a bad way.

As it has been mentioned in this blog already, CPJ has his system and he’s not going to abandon it. He will tweak it to adapt to the talent on our side of the ball and the opponent, but the adjustments will be very subtle.

From the very first interview with the man, it’s been clear to me that he has one agenda on his mind. Whether we win against FSU or not, he won’t compromise that one goal. He WILL however use this game in whatever way he needs to in order to get closer to that goal.

The game against Gardner-Webb sent a clear message to me that I haven’t heard anyone else pick up on. Since then, against Clemson and UVA (and even looking back before then), his goal and his methods just get clearer…and I’m enjoying watching it.

I only hope that he’s successful.

By AlabamaRamblinwreck

I agree that GT needs to use some misdirection and maybe some pass plays (screens maybe like UVA used against us) to keep FSU off guard. They are too athletic to go right at them, unless we can hire a new offensive line.

To win this game, our coaches will have to outcoach and outmaneuver FSU’s coaches. I think they can do that, but it will also take zero turnovers.

My biggest concern on defense is our inability to stop the pass plays with a lack of depth and experience in our secondary. Hopefully, our d-line can pressure FSU’s QB better than they did with UVA. (of course, they were held quite often)

Not ready to call this one a win just yet, but I do think it could be a win.

Go Jackets!!

MMyersGT: Funny how you didn’t break down how the polls voted GT in each of the nerds’ CLAIMED championships. The bottom line, tech was named champs in those four years by recognized polling services. So was Georgia in each of the years we can legitimately claim ships. So, you can’t have it both ways, idiot. If you want to claim partial championships, UGA has every right to do so as well. Does this help you sleep any better? Getting a little cold this time of year in your mom’s basement? Methinks MMyers didn’t go to tech. Or better yet, he probably did…but flunked out. How’s Georgia State treating you lad? Or am I overestimating you? I’ll try again. How’s Georgia Perimeter these days, sport?

I am a FSU grad that went to grad school at GT coming back to Atlanta to cheer for both. Looking forward to the game, and hope the team that wins goes on to win the ACC and the Orange Bowl! FSU and GT always play each other tough, it will be a battle. GO NOLES! GO JACKETS! The Nole faithful will be present in big numbers, so Jackets, we will see you there!!

I hate to get drawn into a useless argument, but if I was going to determine who was a NCAA Football champion, I’d ask the NCAA….see the following link.

I have reviewed my DVR of the UVA game trying my best to be objective, and I am very upset at the officiating. I counted 4 bad calls favoring UVA to none for Tech. Tech got the better of the close calls 2 favoring UVA to 4 for Tech, but these didn’t nearly compensate for the bad calls. As I posted earlier, the 3 big ones were: [1] Michael Johnson was clearly held by #61 on the 34 yd TD pass to make the score UVA 17 GT 14 in the 3rd Qtr., 10:22 time left. Both ESPNU announcers, Doug Bell and Charles Arbuckle, agreed. Coach Paul Johnson was furious at the officials as were the fans who saw the replay on the Jumbotron. Not only should the TD have been nullified with a penalty, but MJ was going to sack the QB possibly even causing a fumble as he later did. [2] Peerman #37 clearly stepped out of bounds at the 4 yd line as he dove for the 1st down at the GT 3 yd line with the score tied 17-17, 4th Qtr., 3:55 left. Numerous video replays clearly showed it, and both ESPNU announcers emphatically agreed. No official review, but CPJ challenged. The refs upheld the bad spot giving the Cavs a 1st down on the GT 3. Both announcers said “WOW!!” Also, Tech lost a critical Time Out. [3] D. Thomas was clearly interfered with on a long pass on 3rd & 11 from the Tech 40, 4th Qtr, 2:09 left, UVA 24 GT 17. The UVA player had his hands all over him. No flag. Thomas nearly caught it anyway.

The other bad call was in the 1st Qtr, UVA 3 GT 14, 5:35 left. GT #59 was clearly held allowing Peerman to gain 8 yds. This was not as big as the other 3.

Others feel that UVA held more often, but I couldn’t definitively see that on DVR.

For those of you who agree with me, go to theacc.com, scroll down the left to “contact us” and email them your outrage, as I have.

UVA played well, but in my view, these 3 bad calls cost us the game. We had 3 turnovers which hurt, esp. the one on the UVA 5 yd. line, but UVA had 3 which hurt them also.

What do you think?

Historian posted: “….and you REALLY want to count NCs before facemask were invented, then…I’ll indulge you. Let’s count, shall we?…UGA: 5 national titles…Tech: 4 CLAIMED national titles.

I thought I had settled all this. But ONCE MORE UNTO THE BREECH!!

If you want to be accurate and look at all of football history, as most educated football scholars do using all the polls who have proclaimed National Champions, then Georgia Tech won 6 and Georgia won 5 National Championships. Of those, the only consensus, unanimous National Champion was Georgia Tech in 1917. Here is the reference: Past Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I FBS) National Champions (formerly called Division I-A)

GT listed as NC in 1990, 1956, 1952, 1951, 1928, 1917 = 6 National Championships

UGA listed as NC in 1980, 1968, 1946, 1942, 1927 = 5 National Championships

http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/iafootballpast_champs.html

BTW, Bobby Dodd said that his 1956 team, which lost only to Tennessee in the Game of the Year, 6-0, on a fluke play, was his greatest team, better than his two undefeated teams.

StingDoc: That’s fine with me. I’ll take 5 championships all day long. No doubt tech had a fine program back in the day, and judging from the link, yall can claim 6. But to say Georgia only has 1 national title is throwing rocks in a glass house. The same standards to claim a championship should apply to both teams, yes, including partial ones.

Buzzfan1936 While I agree that ACC refs are pitiful, the D-line has been held all year long. Maybe that is something that needs to be addressed in practice. Maybe the scout team should hold the D-line on every play so they figure out how to either break out of the hold of make it look so obvious that the O-line is cheating that the refs will have NO CHOICE but to call it. It’s a losing battle, far worse calls have been made and nothing is ever done about it.

If you want to see some things that were under GT’s control in the UVA game, go back to the DVR. Watch for missed tackles on defense. Watch for dropped passes, although there weren’t that many. Watch the fumbles. And here is the real killer: watch the blocking on offense. It’s horrible. Not to single out a player, but watch the center. This one is easy. He gets down in a 4-pt stance. It took UVA’s nose tackle about 5 plays to figure out how to beat Voss and he did it all day. All the nose tackle had to do was shove Voss in the back of his helmet (or shoulder pads) and drive him into the turf, then step over him. That is all it took, and he did it all day. That KILLED the dive play up the middle. Just about every time Dwyer went up the middle, he was tackled by the D-line, and UVA was playing 3-4!!!!!

Talented offense, Larry? Tech’s offense hasn’t scored more than 17 points on any good team all year. Your D has been the most valuable asset. Watch what happens to your offense against the teams left on your schedule.

What happens next year when Michael Johnson, Vance Walker, and Daryl Richard aren’t around to prop up your high school offense? Next year will be really ugly. This year’s 6-6 or 7-5 will look great compared to what will happen next year.

To all of you whiners that think your team is inordinately held, watch any game closely and you will see that every defense gets gets held. It could be called every single play. And by the way. When an offensive lineman has his arms extended and a fist full of jersey, it isn’t holding. Well coached defenders have the technique to break that tactic.

Not a beeliever-yet-

I agree to some of your points-I like the fact that CPJ is standing firm to what he believes will work. It is funny how everyone seems to forget this is the first year of a new offense, in which I think they have done pretty darn good with. Once ALL players buy into this, it will gel. I would like to see the misdirection roll out (naked bootleg)and give Josh the chance to run or pass I think if Tech can do this and get around the end it will open things up-I see Andrews bringing his S and FS up to cheat and I feel we will have something over the top as well-other Wide outs have to step up-I like the fact that regardless of the two loses Tech was in a position to win and that is all you can ask other than the win is to be in position for the win-As fans we may not want it that way, but it is exciting and when they get it down-wow-I saw some to the old film from Navy and a blogger on here a couple weeks ago had it right-CPJ has only shown elementary stuff compared to what Navy and GSU were running. I think that once Josh starts trusting his instincts you will see this offense open up even more. Tech has to hold on to the ball and finish-the two blow out games that is what happened and we see the result. I think on the D side blitzs should come right off the inside hips of the ends-MJ or MB rushing hard out will open up the lane-you can see it almost every Tech Blitz-I’ve done enough armchair coaching now. GO JACKETS-THWG!!

Brewer wrote: “Buzzfan1936 While I agree that ACC refs are pitiful, . At least email the ACC and let them know. The number of protests could have an effect. A more organized, even legal remedy could be started. We shouldn’t have to take this biased and/or corrupt officiating which costs coaches jobs, the institution prestige and money, and tears the hearts out of young athletes and their fans. The ACC has an agenda. Georgia Tech is not part of it.

You also said, “If you want to see some things that were under GT’s control in the UVA game, go back to the DVR. Watch for missed tackles on defense. The focus of my post was the officiating. I agree with your intelligent and insightful comments which makes the essential point: THE MAJOR WAY TECH CAN OVERCOME THE BIASED AND/OR CORRUPT ACC OFFICIATING IS TO PLAY SO WELL THEY CAN OVERCOME THE ADVERSITY OF THE “PITIFUL” OFFICIATING!! This is asking a lot of our coaches and players not to mention recruiting elite athletes superior to those of all our opponents. We should be able to play teams of similar or better overall competence and ability and be given a fair chance to win. Therefore, we should make a major effort to bring the bad officiating to the attention of the public and the powers that be and DEMAND CHANGE!

Buzzfan, Yes we got hosed on the spot at the three in the 4th quarter, by far the worst call of the day, especially after review. I find it difficult to believe however, that the officiating team had it out for Georgia Tech in a midseason game against UVA in Atlanta. Good teams have to overcome the bad calls, there are several in every game. I just hope the D learned to hit a good runner below the waist, unlike the high tackles attempted against Peerman. He OWNED us!

Who on earth cares about who won how many NC’s. Nerds, you can’t talk football smack with UGA until you actually make it a rivalry again. Soon, it will be 8 in a row and you would not have still won an all out ACC Championship. Division titles are like kissing your sister and you Nerds know about kissing your sister.

My Gators will beat the Dawgs by 13. face it Nerds you only wish that you had out of state rivalries like UGA has. Your program has been down for so long no thinks of your team much of a going concern. What makes it so bad is not your team. They try hard every Saturday. It’s the Nerd Herd fans that sound so pathetic when you act knowledgable about football. Now, there are about 3 or 4 of you that would exclude for that list, bu the majority of you need to get a clue.
