The view from Charlottesville

This game will go a long way toward determining the ACC’s Coastal Division winner. Tech enters at 3-1, Virginia 2-1. (Virginia Tech also is 2-1 and plays at FSU Saturday night).

The Jackets have won four straight, while the Cavaliers have won three in a row.

Jay Jenkins, of The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, was gracious enough to answer five questions about UVA and this matchup.

Was coach Al Groh’s job in actual jeopardy earlier this season? How about now?

Sitting at 1-3 and on the heels of a disappointing loss to Duke, Virginia coach Al Groh was certainly sitting on the hot seat. Losing to Duke, in the eyes of the Virginia faithful, was not acceptable. It had been four years since the Blue Devils actually beat an ACC foe.

Throw in the off-the-field problems that the CavaliersÂ’ coaching staff endured and there was ample reason to think Groh”s time at his alma mater was coming to a quick end. Yet magically, in Groh-like fashion,– he seems to coach his best football with his back against the wall - the naysayers were silenced with the current three-game winning streak.

Making it to a bowl game, which would require two more wins, would likely buy Groh another year, but another loss to in-state rival Virginia Tech in the regular-season finale would make it an interesting $6 million decision for the movers and shakers.

What are the biggest reasons for UVA’s turnaround?

It is tough to point to one thing in particular, but having a resolution to the saga that surrounded former starting quarterback Pete Lalich certainly helped the program move forward. To say the least, the circus-like atmosphere was chaotic for all involved. With Lalich now at Oregon State, Virginia turned to sophomore Marc Verica, who has been efficient of late, passing for over 200 yards in three straight games.

Verica’Â’s emergence happened to coincide with the improved play from the Cavaliers’ inexperienced offensive line and the healthy return of tailback Cedric Peerman. Austin Pasztor, a 17-year-old from Canada, was inserted at left guard, and when coupled with left tackle Eugene Monroe the duo provided running room for Peerman, who has scored four touchdowns in the past two games.

The infusion of youth on the defensive side of the ball in nickel and dime packages should not be overlooked, too. The youngsters promptly made VirginiaÂ’’s defense faster in third-down situations.

Talk about Verica’s development. What is he doing better now?

After throwing four interceptions in the second half at Duke, it is safe to say that Verica is doing just about everything better.

His teammates have raved about his poise in the huddle. The coaches have praised his maturity. Fans have simply loved his humble approach to his high-profile position in the program.

Verica was sporadic early in his career throwing the football consistently. His best throws were sensational. His worst throws were wounded ducks. The right-hander has found a happy medium during the past three games.

How good is the O-line and can it hold up against Tech’s outstanding D-line?

That is likely where the game will be won or lost for Virginia. Monroe is all but a lock to be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and right tackle Will Barker has improved of late, but the interior three on the offensive line have not faced anything comparable to what they will see on Saturday since the season-opening contest against Southern California.

Look for Virginia to keep fullback Rashawn Jackson in the backfield to help buy time for Verica. The Cavaliers will have a tough time winning on the road if Georgia Tech finishes at or above its average of nine tackles for loss.

I imagine the linebackers are the strength of the team. Tell me a little about them and the challenge they face in stopping Tech’s option-based offense.

The biggest problem is the unfamiliarity with the system, which has likely been the case for practically every opponent Georgia Tech has faced this season. Virginia has not prepared for a triple option offense during Al Groh’s tenure.

Virginia inside linebacker Antonio Appleby is listed as doubtful with a high ankle sprain, and if he is unable to play his loss could be magnified this week. Appleby is much quicker than Jon Copper, his counterpart in the middle in the CavaliersÂ’ 3-4 defense.

Outside linebacker Clint Sintim is one of the best in the ACC and is the heart and soul of the defense, but Georgia Tech may elect to attack Virginia on the opposite side where Denzel Burrell starts.

Regardless of the linebackers employed, tackling upon first contact will be imperative for Virginia. Far too many times this season a defensive player has allowed an opponent to escape and gain additional yardage.

Great article, and good strong questions Larry. You and Ken are doing a fantastic job covering Tech. Thanks for all the good work.

This is a classic Tech trap game. Its just one of those games we should win, but in the past have lost. This game will speak a lot about how much of a change PJ has actually been able to make in half a year.

Personally, I am drunk in the PJ Kool-Aid, and think we should roll. Shutout? With JWD missing, maybe not, but I am predicting 28-10 Tech!

This game, like pretty much every game running the spread option, will hinge on blocking. If the blocking (mainly the offensive line) is good, GT will win with a blow out over UVA. If not, it will come down to a combination of individual efforts. The pick-6 and Blair’s TD saving tackle are just a few examples of great individual efforts that won the game against Clemson. I’d rather see the blow out…

To be honest, I’m starting to doubt that the blocking will come around this season. The only good game for blocking was the Miss St game, and there were too many blown blocks in that game too. Even on Dwyer’s big TD run, a blown block on the line allowed a DT to almost catch Dwyer. The big boy just didn’t have the motor to catch JD. There have been some excellent individual performances on blocking, but as a whole, the team is still on the wrong side of the learning curve. Watch out for next year. A very young team will be a year older, the blocking should be in place and GT will add two more talented running backs to the equation. It should be fun to watch.

Interesting game. Lots of things to watch and I’m thinking this game looks tough. UVA riding high again with thoughts of Tampa dancing in there heads. Tech struggled with G-W and had to come from behind at Clemson. But the fact that Nesbitt has settled back in, UVA is on the road and it’s UVA’s first look at the 3-Opt, will all be too much for the Cavs to overcome. UVA will have some early run success but ti will be limited. The game will be out of reach by the 4 quarter. Jackets 34 - 13.

Our D Line, particularly Darrell Richard, will again dominate a very young interior O Line of UVA. If UVA could only score 10 against UNC I say they might be lucky to get one TD. Dwyer has a huge day against the 3-4 D alignment. When the LBs finally pull up to stop the dive Bebe gets some big passes. We have our most balanced offensive game of the year and roll 31-3.

And bhamwreck, get in the car and drive over. You are only 2 hrs away from watching a great game in person.

Come on all you Tech grads, if you live within 3 hours of Atlanta you should be in the stands. We’ve got to start filling up the stadium on Saturdays.

Anyone else notice how well Stephen Threet is lighting them up at Michigan? Remember, this is one of the GT decommits after the CG firing that the Bulldog Nation was laughing about.

We’re one win away from being bowl eligible. Michigan is two losses away from NOT going to a bowl for the first time since the 1970s (which would push GT and UGA up into a tie for 4th place in longest current bowl streaks, behind VT, FSU, and UF).

The matchups in this game really have me worried. Tech is just one game removed from an embarrassing performance against a D1-AA opponent. While last week’s game ended in our favor, I don’t like the fact that we couldn’t hold an 11 point lead over Clempson. Seems to be that the timing is right for a bad performance. I had this one penciled in for a “W” after about the 3rd week of the season, but UVA looks like they’ve got their stuff together.

UVA 28 GT 21. (Peerman gets 183 yards rushing. Verica hits 12-18 and 2 TDs. UVA picks up a fumbled exchange between Nesbitt and Dwyer and runs in for a score.)

Georgia Tech’s undergraduate student body is only 13,000 and was well under 10,000 for most of it’s existence to date. A significant portion of Tech’s students are international and thusly don’t support college athletics the way Americans tend to. It is widely understood that if you’re a Tech fan it’s because you attended the school or a close family member did; unlike the majority of college football fans in the South, or anywhere else for that matter. Another strong matter for consideration is that due to Tech’s reputation for engineering, etc. graduates often receive job offers outside Georgia and even the US. I’m glad for the 40,000 Tech fans that attend games like the one this weekend against Virginia, at least you know they’re not sellouts.

Jabster, nice insight on the consecutive bowl streak. FSU has been to 26 in a row so it’s going to be hard for either UGA or Tech to catch them as long as they keep scheduling FCS schools three times a year. I too like these types of blogs with questions from both sides so you can get a good perspective on the state of both programs. I hope the Techies win every game until Thanksgiving weekend, of course.

Enlightened (I spelled it correctly for you),

USC is a private universtiy in Southern California that has 16,000 undergraduate students (close comparison to Yech) but yet is able to fill a 90,000+ stadium for each game. Any clue as to why? Let me explain for you……WINNING TRADITION!! The reason you can not fill your stadium is because your program is a joke, not small undergraduate population.

By bigd

October 24, 2008 2:54 PM | Link to this

Cav’s Sword-

Doesn’t your stadium hold like 60,000? If our stadium is rinky dink, then yours is too. And I saw your game against UNC, the upper deck was half empty so don’t talk about fans showing up. The only reason we are 10,000 tickets short is because your school returned 8,000. By the way, that report was a little premature, we are approaching 50,000 sold and and by game time it will probably be a sell out.

El Gato, I appreciate you fixing my typing mishap. I’d hate to be confused with the folks that type “their” when they mean “they’re”. You practically proved my point about wannabes who attach themselves to the local college because said local college wins football games. Metro population of LA = 18 million, Atlanta = 5 million.

Also, Georgia Tech ranks 9th in bowl wins all-time, and 14th in bowl games played in all-time… not exactly “a joke”.

By gtne80

October 24, 2008 3:10 PM | Link to this

Cat,

We all get your (overstated) point. Winning football results in fannies in the seats.

Every school will have their core of fans. They will be made up of people that are grads, former students, relatives of grads, and folks that “grew up” being fans of the team. The difference is getting those borderline sports fans that don’t fit in those previously mentioned categories.

One problem that Tech faces is that ticket-buying population of Atlanta is largely made up of transients from other parts of the country. If you don’t believe it, go to a Braves game when they play the Cubs, Mets, or Red Sox and see how many folks from Chicago, New York and Boston show up for those games. At times, it feels like the Braves are playing a road game. If those folks are interested in football, they are usually more interested in NFL than college. Yankees typically didn’t grow up with the college football traditions that we had in the South. They’d rather go to the GA Dome on Sunday than to Grant Field on a Saturday.

Tech has had some up and down periods since the mid-60’s. That doesn’t make the program a “joke” as you say. I dare say that in some of Goff’s and Donnan’s years at UGA there were quite a few empty seats for the “lesser” games.

The comparison between Tech and USC breaks down when comparing Atlanta and LA. Big differences between the population density in Southern California and Atlanta. Atlanta’s a big city, but Southern California is wall-to-wall people from below San Diego to well above LA.

I don’t know the answer to this, but is UCLA selling out their games too? I’m betting that with their recent fortunes, you’d find some empty seats there too.

It might also be noteworthy that LA is the largest city in the US without an NFL franchise.

Food for thought, if you have an open mind.

AuditDawg:

FSU came close to breaking their streak in ‘06 when they went 6-6 (with some squeaker wins) in the regular season and went to the Emerald Bowl.

FSU has historically had one of the tougher OOC schedules—#2 in the number of BCS team OOC games in the last 10 years behind Southern Cal—including Miami (before they joined the ACC) and UF. Not sure why they have gone on a cupcake binge the last couple seasons, with UTC and W Carolina this year.

FWIW, UF is sitting on 18 in a row, and VT 15. Neither of those streaks should be in jeopardy this year.

You might remember the 1996 edition of COFH. A stinker of a game, UGA beat Tech 19-10 in Athens, in a game that neither team deserved to win.

It was Donnan’s first year and O’Leary’s second. It was UGA’s and Tech’s last losing season (both finished 5-6) and the last time UGA and Tech each sat at home for the holidays.

Take a look at the remainder of FSU’s schedule.

They’re 5-1 now, but since they played 2 FCS teams, they are in the same situation as Tech, they need 2 more wins to get bowl eligible.

It’s not a lock. They have road games against GT and Maryland. Their remaining home games are Va Tech, Clemson, BC, and the Gators.

Odds are that they’ll pull out 2 more wins, but they don’t have any “chippies” left.

The reason Tech can’t sell out is because the ACC is down. The casual fan in ATL will not come see us play against UVA, NC State, MD, etc, even if they are a Tech fan to some degree. If Tech was still in the SEC I don’t think we would any word about not filling up the stadium. See ND two years ago. That game was standing room only, and it wasn’t because of the ND fans. Tech is getting there but it takes time. Most people have become so jaded and pessimistic thanks to the Gailey regime. It’s going to take some time to get them back excited again.

I remember that game in Athens. 2/3 full stadium maybe, sitting in the cold and rain. Tech returned a punt for a TD to go up 7 - 0 , then never did much else. A drunk UGA coed was yelling her a$$ off behind me first half, then blew chunks and passed out at halftime. The dawg fans were actually quite cordial, since neither side didn’t have much to crow about. The 98 game and Brad Chambers was much better, though.

Gtne80,

Excellent points on the above post…..not sure on UCLA but I would hazard to guess that the large metro population is not clamoring for their tickets as they stink it up on the field. Point is if you have winning tradition fans will follow. Exceptions do exist and the Atlanta Braves of early 2000’s did see a drop off in attendance after making the playoffs for so many years. The comparison between Tech & USC does hold water in the fact that other very large metropolis areas have college teams not supported by local populace due to teams that stink (see Northwestern in Chicago & Temple in Philadelphia). If Blacksburg, VA can fill up a stadium with 70,000 “Hokies”, Tech should fill the stands (with a winning team) in the city of Atlanta. Keep winning and I am sure you will pick up “sidewalk fans” as many of the Tech bloggers derisively refer to others.

I’ve been to Blacksburg. If I lived there, I think I’d go to Va Tech games too. That’s about the only thing that they have to look forward to.

Even a Dawg fan has to admit that Tech historically has a better program and more tradition than Temple and/or Northwestern.

With a winning team, Grant Field will fill up. I think in a couple of years, Coach Johnson will have more fans in the stands.

Maybe my memory is cloudy, but it seems like when we had Hamilton and Godsey at QB under O’Leary, and we were putting up about 40 points a game, Tech tickets were harder to get than they have been recently.

Of course that was before they added the upper deck on the North end zone (I’ve sat there and you have almost as good a view from there as you do from the Varsity).

I’m not sure that the term “sidewalk fans” is meant to be derisive. If I’ve used it, it’s just a term to mean the average fan that doesn’t have close ties to the school. It’s the fan that you really have to compete with other options (Braves, Predators, Falcons) to get them to spend their entertainment dollars to support your team.

Anyway, I believe that there are some real differences between the situations that face UGA and Ga Tech. It’s hard to ignore that the differences go beyond whether the respective teams are winning at that particular time or not.

What’s your point BuLLdawg?

Let’s see where UGA’s opponents are currently ranked:

Georgia Southern? unranked

Central Michigan? unranked

South Carolina? unranked

Arizona State? Ranked #24 when UGA played them. Where are they now? Unranked!

Tennessee? unranked

Alabama? Currently ranked #2. As I recall, UGA lost!

Vanderbilt? Ranked at the time you played them. Currently unranked

So UGA has met 1 currently ranked team and they LOST!

Three of UGA’s remaining opponents are currently ranked - LSU, FL, and TECH. My guess is they’ll lose at least two of those games, possible all of them!

Auburn - unranked

Kentucky - unranked

UGA hasn’t proven anything yet. UGA will finally get tested these next two weeks. Then we’ll see if they deserve that lofty ranking. The same can be said for TECH. Only time will tell where either team will be ranked at the end of the season when the rankings actually count.

BTW, Grant Field is NOT named for Ulysses S. Grant. It was named after John Inman Grant, son of John W. Grant who was a member of the Tech Board of Trustees and a well-known Atlanta merchant.

The Grant family did not give the land on which Grant Field is built. However, they did give the initial $15,000 used in 1913 to build the first permanent concrete stands on the west side of the field. In gratitude for the gift, the Board of Trustees named the field Hugh Inman Grant Field in memory of Grant’s deceased son. (Straight from TECH’s website)

BuLLdawg give up your real name and dates you went to UGA. I just don’t believe you are anything more than a Georgia Redneck that goes hunting instead of attending the games.

I agree with El Gato, the USC Trojans fill their stadium because they currently have a tremendous winning tradition. This is evidenced by their lack of sellouts in some lean years prior to the arrival of Pete Carroll. Also, unlike Tech, most of USC’s graduates stay in southern California. I’m now surrounded by more USC alums in my everyday life than I ever knew when I was at Tech. I’m currently in heaven now that Tech will be on ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN for three weeks in a row.

Bulldawg just checked the UGA blogs and you are nowhere to be found. Why? Don’t you have friends on that blog?

No, not the same as Bulldawg.

Can see from your name you are an intellectual heavyweight. Came up with those names all on your own, did you? Let’s talk academics then, shall we? Let’s just say you did happen to “ATTEND” Tech…… A. What quarter/semester (not sure how old you are) did you flunk out your freshman year? B. What year did you transfer to Southern Poly? C. If you survived freshman year….what year did you graduate with mgt degree? How many tickets did you purchase for Saturday’s game?

Bull Hawg just wants to be held, someone stoll his lollipop! Cavs fans, if I had a stadium as big as yours, I’d rent it out to the Obama fans, and lease the rest to the GW fans. Who cares about the stadiums? Geez.

Tech wins ugly (for a young team) 17-7.

The puppy comments are getting a bit nastier and a bit longer b/c they have nothing else to do now that the “black out” has failed and you are facing reality that LSU will issue the final blow to a season w/ such promise. Oh, how you came so close again this year, only to fail. My oh my. Maybe Herschel’s great great great grandkids will finally help UGAG win a NC. pathetic bunch of USC and LSU wanabees.

Half a National Championship for the Pip Squeaks ?

Is that an acknowledgement of the fact that the Georgia Tech yellowjackets have NEVER not once EVER won any AP Poll National Championship

Look you named your football field, in the middle of the slums of downtown of a city named for Rising From the Ashes, GRANT FIELD.

Grant was the Commander in Chief of the Union Army in the War of Northern Aggression.

BuLLdawg:

Yeah, and Sanford Stadium was named after Fred G. Sanford (the TV character, not the regular poster on this blog), and Vince Dooley was named after that stupid Emory skeleton mascot. Whatever.

If we decline in the Polls another DOUBLE-DIGITS we will be ALL THE WAY DOWN THERE with Georgia Tech.

Except Tech would be on the way up, and UGA would be on the way down. Remember—we weren’t supposed to be ranked at all this year (SI last in the ACC—FAIL!!!), and UGA started the season at, what, NUMBER ONE?!?! FAIL again!

We have Won the Last 2 in a Row over LSU by Scores of 45-16 and 34-14.

Les Miles has Never Beat the University of Georgia.

Coach Richt has Never Lost to Les Miles.

Georgia is the Number 8 team in the nation, and LSU is the Number 13 team in the nation. Together UGA and LSU are ranked 15 places higher than Georgia Tech, but this is what you want to talk about.

UGA plays the Official NCAA Strength of Schedule for all scheduled games this season the Number 1 SoS in the nation. LSU plays the Number 47 Strength of Schedule.

Georgia has the Number 26 Total Offense in the nation and LSU, despite their far easier Strength of Schedule, has the Number 40 Total Offense in the NCAA.

Georgia has the Number 12 Total Defense in the nation and LSU, despite their far easier Strength of Schedule, has the Number 24 Total Defense.

Yes, UGA has no chance to win this game – you say; while instead Tech plays Virginia who will not have a wining record after you play them.

Virginia’s Total Offense is Number 104.

Virginia’s Total Defense is Number 56.

You say Central Michigan, South Carolina, Arizona State, Alabama, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, LSU, Florida, Kentucky, Auburn, and Georgia Tech have ALL BEEN RANKED THIS SEASON.

Yet, UGA has Lost 1 Game all season long during this Most Grueling Strength of Schedule Number 1 in the Nation.

But, we have no chance against LSU and Les Miles who is doing worse than UGA with an easier schedule by far than UGA.

And, we then have no chance in Jacksonville at the Gator Bowl where UGA won last year Coach Richt beating Urban Meyer, and where Coach Richt does not have a Losing Record in the Last 4 Years now against Florida.

When Florida is ranked Number 10 in the BCS Poll to UGA at Number 8.

When Florida’s Strength of Schedule is Number 17 to UGA SoS Number 1.

Yet, Florida Lost to Ole Miss Number 63 at the swamp while UGA Lost to Number 2 Alabama at our house.

And, even with the far easier Strength of Schedule for Florida compared to UGA, Florida is the NCAA Total Offense Number 37 to UGA Number 26.

And, even with the far easier Strength of Schedule for Florida compared to UGA, Florida is the NCAA Total Defense Number 15 to UGA Number 12.

Yet UGA has no chance in that game either, you say.

Now, I can see how UGA’s Football Team has a Higher Academic Progress Rate (APR) than Georgia Tech’s.

Now, I can see how Georgia Tech Lost 6 Football Scholarships for 2007-2008 for Academic Fraud.

Now, I can see how Georgia Tech had 1 of your student-athletes die of heroin overdose Michael Hutts this year.

Now, I can see how little Joey Hamilton was hired by Coach Paul Johnson at Tech this year only to spend his 1st paycheck on drugs, which he left in his car, after he committed a hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident, drunk unable to even stand up falling down drunk, as Coach Paul Johnson’s Assistant Director of Player Personnel of the Georgia Tech football team this year.

Now, I can see why Georgia Tech played Reuben Houston against UGA in football after he admitted with his son on his lap, on the campus of Georgia Tech that he was arranging a deal to sell 93 lbs. of drugs on Tech’s campus.

Now, I can see why Georgia Tech Starting Cornerback for Paul Johnson this year was Arrested and Charged with Rape, Mr. Jerrard Tarrant, with a $40,000 Bond.

Tech is down there in the slums of downtown, where all the drugs are, and you need to quit doing drugs.

The facts are: UVA has NEVER been a football power. Its basketball team has been good (meaning not great) at best. How can these Jeffersonians crow at Tech ????

Well, this Dawg says go Jackets and go Fla. State tomorrow! I want you guys to win the ACC so, 1)It will hurt sooo much worse when we bring you back to earth in November, and 2) You’ll strengthen our schedule even more! Go Jack-ettes! It’s gettin’ close to beatdown time! 8 straight in ‘08!

I’ve been a GT fan since 1960 (went there in 67… son going there next year) and am proud of the way our team is playing. All the rest of this blog is hooey. Let’s simply allow GT and UGA play today and see what happens. Paul Johnson can flat out coach!

if GT can win at Clemson they can beat VA at home. Honestly, the ACC with the best talent is Clemson and they can’t win so who cares if Va’s stats are better or if the talent is considered more caliber than the Jackets. To hell with the Cavs

Looks like the Tarheels will be tough at home. UNC 45 BC 17 in the 4th Qtr. Miami beats WF 16-10.

Someone said Tech plays no ranked teams except UGA. FSU is ranked. UNC probably will be ranked. Miami looked good today and beat WF, previously ranked and who beat one of your “awesome” SEC teams. All the teams Tech plays are good including UVA today.
