Sizable challenge against UVa

Here’s what Tech is up against Saturday:

Bookend 6-foot-7 defensive ends (Can you imagine going against two Michael Johnsons? Not saying these guys, senior Alex Field and redshirt freshman Matt Conrath, are in his class, by the way.)

An outside linebacker CPJ called “NFL-sized.” He’s referring to ACC sacks leader Clint Sintim, who is 6-3, 254.

Virgina’s O-line also is beefy: four 300-plus pounders and a 290-pound center. The Cavaliers have a 6-foot-7 right tackle and a 6-6 left tackle, Eugene Monroe, who will be a high NFL draft pick.

Speaking of the defensive line, CPJ said, “These guys are tall and big and cover a lot of space.”

VIrginia has held three of its last four opponents — Duke, Maryland and East Carolina — under 100 yards rushing.

Of course it would be surprising, and probably a loss, if Tech doesn’t manage at least 150 on the ground. The Jackets are committed to it and CPJ has shown he will keep running until Tech breaks one. Tech is averaging 248 rushing yards, ninth-most in the nation.

Player after player has told us about the benefits of patience. They keep running the option and eventually someone goes for 30, 40 or all the way. The guess is that patience will be required again Saturday.

Tech isn’t likely to run right through a defense like this. The question is, can the Jackets hit enough plays to win?

Cavaliers defense doesn’t have the speed to stop Tech offense.

On offense Tech wil stuff Virgina run and force third string QB to pass.

I think this game will be closer to a Duke or Miss St. contest than Clemson, BC, and Va Tech.

Winning football teams find a way to move the ball. While our offense is predominantly based on running the ball, it is only successful against this level of competition when the defense has to respect our ability to throw the ball. The threat of a pass has to remain in their minds. I’m sure our coaches understand this. Usually a key to running against a big line is to make them move laterally. Use your speed to get outside. Use misdirection, traps, etc. to make them change directions.

I don’t worry too much about our defensive line matching up with their offensive line. Size is one thing, talent is another.

This will be a very tough game. UVA has a good coach that has turned the team around after a bumpy start. One thing that could be a key is to get to their young quarterback early and to vary our defensive looks enough to keep him guessing.

If we win this one, it will be won by our defense. We’ll need to hold their offense to less than 13. UNC held them to 7 for most of the game last week, so it can be done. We can’t give up any cheap points by offensive turnovers.

Bottom line, we’ve got the talent, the coaching and the home field advantage. We should be able to take care of business and post the “W.”

Go Jackets!!!

Tech has been very successful thus far this year against 3-4 defenses. UVA will have to move their linebackers and safeties forward to stop Jonathan Dwyer on the dive and that will leave them open to a big pass play as the game progresses. UVA will also suffer from Tech being a better conditioned team. Mark my words, we will pull away from them in the fourth quarter when their defensive line gets tired of chasing down Josh Nesbitt.

Prediction: It will be reasonably close until mid way through the third quarter. After that, Tech opens things up and wins 31-10.

Virginia has a good team and they are playing as good as anyone right now. What a turnaround for them. But they are coming to the flats and all we have to offer them is a good ‘arse-whooping’. Just remember Tech fans…Gailey is gone. This is the type of game that he would lose for sure. Paul Johnson doesn’t believe in losing, and he has exorcized most of the Gailey attitude out of the team. Thank God for Paul Johnson…Thank God and Greyhound that the worst coach in the history of the world is gone forever. All Tech fans, Virginia fans, and football fans in general need to get to Bobby Dodd Stadium Saturday to watch a great football game. There is something really special happening at Tech…be a part of it. And never ever let Chan Gailey set foot on Tech property again.

I hope you’re right BWF but I don’t see it being that one sided, maybe somewhere in between. Virginia will be tough on defense but I can’t see them being better than B.C. or Clemson up front (front 7). Nesbitt should be better this week than last and we’re liable to hit some BIG pass plays this week. I’m going to say TECH 24 UVA 9.

Worried about Virginia? And you Tech thinks it has a chance against Georgia Nov 29? Our O-line is not our strength, but fact is, of 10 positions along the line of scrimmage, 3 or fewer Cavs would start for The Dawgs. And I won’t even discuss skill positions. Get ready for another beat down.

After watching UVA play I don’t think they have the speed as some defenses we have played. They are playing good ball right now. I think Tech should be able to grind it out on them with the 3-4 defense, Dwyer should be able to reach the 2nd level a good bit on the day-Josh has to be more willing to draw them in and pitch for the big plays. I think the big plays are more likely to happen on a 3-4 defense as you draw in those LB’s. I will be at the local watering hole in Penn St. country since it is on ESPU! I think the team will be motivated enough to bring a “W” in the left column. I’m just happy this game is at the Flats. Hope to see a big crowd on T.V. Go Jackets and THWG!!

Harry Dawg is one of the propaganda machines that lead you to think Georgia is better than they really are. Don’t get me wrong they are very good and to the most part very nice, but there is always a Harry Dawg hanging around the blog like a bully waiting for kids to steal their lunch money. A guy who ain’t much himself but if you don’t hand it over he will get his big brother to beat you up. In the meanwhile you toss your hard earn lunch money to the punk thinking his brother is some stud. Then one day you run into this bad boy brother and he is nothing but a milk toast and it is payback time.

I’ll be there at BDS, sitting in the Premium seats.

My hunch is that we’ll scheme the 3-4 and handle it just fine.

You can have size, or you can have speed; rarely can you have both. I think speed is more difficult to handle with this offense than size.

I look for the first couple offensive series to employ Plan A; if Plan A is not immediately productive, expect a move to Plan B fairly quickly.

And to be sure - CPJ will have a Plan B, and probably Plans C and D.

My bigger concern is our pass defense.

Thanks for the warning Jack G. I know that these blogs can get brutal at times. Having been educated as an engineer at GT and working as an engineer for 28 years, I’ve been trained to trust in data (evidence) and not place a lot of confidence in hope. Some would call that being a skeptic. Others would call it being a realist.

I took a lot of wood-shedding last year for expressing some negative thoughts (under a different handle). The sentiments that I got blasted for were basically votes of no-confidence in Chan Gailey. Funny what a difference a year can make.

That said, I’m becoming a believer in Coach Johnson. The thing that continues to impress me about him (and what sets him apart from Gailey) is his ability to instill energy, enthusiasm and confidence in his players. Ga Tech football is beginning to become entertaining again. I don’t ask that we win the NC, win the ACC every year, or win every game. What I do expect is to see that our team is prepared, making a visible effort, and being competitive. So far, only the game against G-W could be labeled as a disappointment when weighed against those criteria. That game has to be taken in context of the injuries that kept key players off the field.

Things continue to look positive for my alma mater. I would love nothing more than to see our team win out this year (especially a win ‘tween the hated hedges). Right now, I believe that we’re more likely to be looking at a 9-3 campaign. Going into the season, I’d have bet a sizeable chunk of my paycheck that we’d win no more than 7.

Kudos to Coach PJ and the guys on this team. They are playing a brand of football that makes this GT man proud and encouraged that even better things are in our future.

Our defense should handle UVA’s offense without too much difficulty. Our offense is quicker, and as has already been mentioned should offer the threat of the pass to keep the linebackers guessing.

The one weakness is the turnovers. We cannot afford to give the ball away and expect to win. These next several games will have to be played with intensity and determination to shove it up everybody’s behind.

We have better coaches, very good talent, and happen to be on a winning streak as well, which strangely enough has not been mentioned in the media.

To answer Larry’s question, yes, I think we can have enough big plays to win this one with ease. I do believe that UVA will do everything to shutdown the run possible, and that means we need some pass plays to work, but I think that will not be an issue. It would be nice if Correy Earls came to play this weekend.

I am a little concerned about turnovers and the loss of Jahi. Hopefully, our defensive line will be hitting the QB before he has time to take advantage of Jahi missing in the D-backfield.

I think we win 24-10.

Larry, I didn’t expect our offense to run right through Mississippi State’s defense and we saw how that turned out. I believe Virginia will play a tough game and challenge GT. However, I think we can beat UVA as well as the rest of the teams on our schedule.
I also think FSU has an excellent shot at defeating Virginia Tech this Saturday. If we take care of our business with UVA, we’ll be in the driver’s seat to be Coastal Division champion.

This game could be a lot like the Duke game. UVA puts 9 in the box and stops the run. Then CPJ will see what they are doing and unleash the passing attack. A few completions with no turnovers and the Jackets should be off to the races!! Once the Cavs start adjusting to stop the pass, the option will start to eat up chunks of yardage. I would like to see this happen in the 1st half this time. The Homecoming crowd and loud fan support will be the 12th man and a positive factor for Tech. On the other hand, I wouldn’t be surprised to see CPJ surprise them with some early passes. I think it would work.

Not a beeliever - yet I was not a big fan of Gailey esp. after he wouldn’t replace Reggie Ball and apparently didn’t think beating Georgia was as important as winning ACC games. Yet, we should give credit where credit is due. He won some big games: #3 Miami, and ranked Auburn and Va. Tech, etc. He had winning records and went to bowls every year. He got some great recruits: Calvin Johnson, Tashard Choice, and the players we have now. Also, I think the ACC refs hated him and/or Tech for some reason. He lost a lot of games because of bad and close calls that went against us. Remember the Cheating Dawg who put 3rd down on their scoreboard causing Reggie Ball to throw it away to stop the clock on Tech’s drive to win the game when it was actually 4th down? Gailey was a fine man and a gentleman who had some great moments, but also made some bad decisions and had bad breaks. We should let him go in peace.

Having said that, Dan Radacovich made the right decision to replace him and made a brilliant choice in Paul Johnson. I am a BEELIEVER!

Except for the VT game, the ACC officiating seems to be much better this year. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this will continue.

UGA’s number one concern right now should be whether or not the judicial system will grant permission for 10 of their players to travel out of state. Who would’ve guessed that a coaching staff needed to incl a parole officer?? I think the UVA players could probably start at UGA, simply because of Georgia’s legal attrition.

When their players go through airport security, I can’t help but wonder if they have to put their leg irons on the conveyor or if TSA simply wands them?

The dawgs who come on our blog, like NASCAR Dave and Harry Dawg, to spew hatred and boastful taunts show a complete lack of class. They do a disservice to their cause. I doubt that they even went to UGA or any college for that matter since the UGA grads I know don’t talk that way. They should consider the fact that both schools represent our home state and should be respected and honored. I, for one, pull for both teams to do well so that the final game will be more exciting and meaningful. I still have the same passion and want Tech to beat Georgia as much as any Tech fan, but I can still show respect. All the trash talk does is to generate more trash talk in response.

Does anyone have a link to a discussion of how to attack a 3-4 with a wishbone or flexbone offense?

I would think the opposing defensive coord would first simply tell his OLBs to defeat the A-back’s block and continue to slide down the line of scrimmage. If the OLB can’t beat the blocker consistently, woudn’t the DC have the OLB line up wider - which creates a 5-in-the-box or 6-in-the-box matchup issue in controlling the dive play, or alternatively, having the A-back block the OLB to the outside to create a lane for the QB keeper option?

I see a lot of opportunity here.

Was anybody else totally irritated by the ESPN announcers pretty much cheering for Clemson last Saturday? And does Andre Ware know anything about football? He’s a cliche machine. Plus, he kept talking about how CPJ’s offense is a “three yards and a cloud of dust offense” and how it will struggle in third-and-long situations (first, is there any offense that thrives in those situations? Second, Tech’s offense has no trouble whatsoever producing big plays, even in the passing game). What a joke.

It’s getting a bit overused hearing the “thank God and greyhound” stuff about Gailey. He was a mediocre coach but wasn’t the worst by any stretch of the imagination. Remember Bill Lewis and his 1 win season or Pepper Rodgers last season. Steve Spurrier was QB coach that year and his contract wasn’t renewed. The administration is just as much to blame for losing seasons as the coach itself. We need to be both thankful and supportive of CPJ and the mindset that brought him here.

It was natural for ESPN to focus on Clemson because the coach just got fired. I was happy with ESPN for showing the game so that I didn’t have to go to a sports bar; therefore, the announcers didn’t bother me. Tech’s avg. rush was 4.0 yds./ carry, so “3 yds. and a cloud of dust” wasn’t too far off.

The other two teams to defend you with a 3-4 (Jax St, Miss St)lost by a combined score of 79-21 and gave up just under 800 yards of rushing offense. Not too shabby.

Also, your coach alluded to something big happening on offense in his presser, so you’ve got to feel good about that as well. Nesbitt, Dwyer, etc. are too good for what UVA has seen this year.

Plus, your D isn’t giving up many points to UVA…they just don’t have enough horses.

I believe this will end up being a much closer game than we would like. Virginia has improved dramatically since the first few weeks of the season, and if their defense can contain the option as well as either Duke or Gardner Webb, then we may have problems. I just hope CPJ is prepared to move Jaybo into the QB position pretty quickly. Jaybo has demonstrated the ability to make better reads in the running game and more accurate throws in the passing game. I will feel much more comfortable if he is under center on Saturday.

Having said all that, I’m looking forward to the game, and I’m sure it’s a game we can win. For the first time in many years, I will likely attend every home game this season. Football is fun again at Georgia Tech!!!

I was a little nervous at the beginning of the week b/c VA appears to have ‘righted’ the ship, and Peerman is healthy. Then I read where they run a 3-4 D….and the Jackets have had NO problems moving the ball against their previous two opponents that ran this D (Jacksonville St. & Miss.St). Particularly impressed by how well the Jackets ran the ball vs. Miss.St., and I’d like to think VA’s D is, at best, equally talented to Miss.St’s.

I think the Jackets will move the ball well, and put-up a big # on the scoreboard.

Also, I think the Jackets will be the best D VA has faced this season.

P.S.

People, don’t worry about the DBs; I believe we are about to see the same thing we saw when the LBs got hurt in game 1…that, while it sucks to have starters get injured, it will be addition by subtraction. Meaning, we’re about to realize there is more depth at the DB position (as we’ve witnessed at LB) b/c Word-Daniels is out. In fact, just like at LB (Sedric Griffin in particular), the guys stepping in this week might be better than the upper classman that’s not playing. And a post I submitted before the season started is proving to be true … that b/c the D-line is so strong, and having a D-Cord. that’s NOT married to the blitz this season, don’t be alarmed when the DBs become the surprise unit of the team. I think the Jackets have 10 INTs this season (maybe 11 ??), after getting just 5 all of last season!
