Today’s focus is All-American candidate Morgan Burnett.

Midseason awards

We’re seven games through the season, but only halfway through the ACC schedule. Tech is 3-1 with four ACC games left.

For their work to this point, these guys get my midseason awards:

Offense: B-back Jonathan Dwyer — Five 100-yard rushing games already. Leads the ACC with 684 rushing yards. Averaging 6.3 yards a carry. Also has a 79-yard TD catch and a 52-yard kickoff return.

CPJ said Tuesday that Dwyer is playing too many snaps. He wants to get Dwyer some rest, but injuries and lack of depth have made that impossible.

Others considered: LT Andrew Gardner, WR Demaryius Thomas

Defense: DE Derrick Morgan — This was an almost impossible decision given how loaded the defense is. Morgan gets the nod because he plays the run and pass equally well. The sophomore leads the team with 6.5 sacks and 9 tackles for loss. His 29 tackles rank fourth on the team.

Others considered: S Morgan Burnett, DT Vance Walker, DE Michael Johnson.

Special teams: Another tough one, but for a different reason. Is it Scott Blair because of his strong punting, his improvement on field goals, the touchdown-saving tackle against Clemson? Or maybe a guy like Jake Blackwood (11 tackles), who blew up a Clemson kickoff return.

I’m going to leave it open and see what you all think.

Rookie: A-back Roddy Jones — The redshirt freshman has scored 3 TDs. He’s averaging 5.7 yards per carry and a whopping 31.5 yards on four catches. He’s also the new punt returner. CPJ said he likes the way Jones runs north and south.

Others considered: QB Jaybo Shaw, LB Kyle Jackson

What do you think of these selections?

On an unrelated note, this site dedicated to Al Groh is pretty entertaining.

Good choices and good rationale. I expected to see more from the A-backs in this offense. I know Peeples has been out, but they don’t seem to get many touches. Was that a misunderstanding on my part or has the offense not evolved to that point yet?

I would have gone with Shaw for Rookie. Scott Blair for Special Teams as he is adequately handling kickoffs, FGs, and a lot of the punting. You dont see that much contribution often.

I like the rookie selection. However I would have given the nod to Jaybo Shaw. Anytime a kid is thrown into the game in the first series….against an SEC defense (albeit Miss St.) and proceeds to blow them out time after time making good decisions I will go with him. Not to mention his performance in the second half against Duke. I assume your reasoning is because Jaybo has not played in every game so that does make sense to me. But without him in there we lose to DUKE and MISS ST. As for special teams I would not give an award. The whole unit is average to below average in almost every phase of special teams. I would obstain from voting to give any award to our special teams.

Johnson doesn’t make the read and decide to pitch. Also, push the caps lock button.

Roddy has played in all 7 games, Shaw has played in 3. Kind of tough to give Shaw ROT1/2Y over Roddy.

Blair also made a touchdown saving tackle on a kick return against Miss State. It was early in the game and could have been a momentum changer. Don’t forget Michael Johnson on special teams. His blocked field goal against Miss State was HUGE. In regards to the earlier post about a-backs not getting the ball. If you notice, Jaybo did pitch it more while Nesbitt tends to hand to Dwyer more and run it himself a little more often. As he gets more comfortable with running the offense, I think he will be pitching a little more. If you recall, by the time virginia tech rolled around, he was pitching a little more and at the last second before getting hit, as the option is designed. I bet we will see him get better the next 2 to 3 games.

I would give the Defensive advantage to Morgan Burnett because he leads the nation in INTs, and they have been very timely. Derrick Morgan has been a stud but I think his numbers are a product of the line as a whole, whereas Burnett has been the clear leader of the secondary.

I agree on Offense - Dwyer hands-down.

Special Teams - yes, give it to Blair just for carrying the load on so much, and yes, the tackle against Clemson was great great effort.

Rookie - Roddy has been great and I would give it to him if he had been on Punts the entire season, I think we would’ve already seen him break one or two. But I gotta give it to Jaybo for coming in cold against MSU and not missing a beat and leading a BEATDOWN of a decent SEC team.

As for the A-backs not being more involved — the blame for that lies on the o-line not giving enough time for them to get to the edges and on the QB for not making the right read enough. They will get better and as they add wrinkles the A-backs will get the ball more. Shun White at Navy gets the ball much much more than our A-backs are seeing it.

I am thrilled with how the year is going so far but have a couple of concerns. I think Dwyer is getting too many hits and it makes no sense to have him return kickoffs. Secondly, I am concerned about our continuing fumble issue. It seems that many of these occur at or shortly after the Dwyer/Nesbitt handoff or fake. If you watch slow motion TV, you see that Dwyer is often being hit in the backfield. Is this a problem with the system being used in the ACC where the defensive linemen are very large and quick? Defenses are setting up to stop us by forcing Nesbitt to pitch or pass and we will see more of this every week from here on out. Would someone who knows more about the triple option tell me if this is a problem with the system or the players?

Chris, good point about Michael Johnson on special teams. I also think Nesbitt was getting more comfortable in the offense toward the end of the Clemson game and before he was injured in the Mississippi State game. I’m ready to see some A-backs catching more passes and carrying more of the rushing load to keep defenses off balance.

By PhotoBuzz

October 22, 2008 11:16 AM | Link to this

GTARIZONA - It has to do wih Nesbitt and Dwyer getting better at the mesh - but a large part of it has to do with our Center and Guards not giving them enough time. The O-Line has to protect better on interior run-blocking.

Not to take anything from Blair, his 2 TD saving Tackles, and all the Kicking, but Blackwood has done more with fewer chances. What Shaw did was amazing so I would split the ROT 1/2yr.

I haven’t been impressed with Melton returning punts or kick-offs. I think we should use Jones and Wright on kick-offs and Jones on punts. When GSU ran this offense the B-back and QB got most of the carries. I think right now defenses are more concerned with a half back getting the ball in space as opposed to the QB turning it up.

Good choices Larry on some close, tough choices, however:

Jaybo Shaw has to get the rookie award. Without him, we definitely would have lost two games. Jones has played well and is also a good choice.

I would vote for Scott Blair for Special Teams because of his punting, field goals, at least two key tackles including a TD and probably game saver against Clemson.

Derrick Morgan is a great choice, but I would go with Michael Johnson.

I agree with your choice of Jonathan Dwyer.

I am really tired of reading *m’s” diatribe against Gailey, but for once, I have to agree with him: The Man of the Year Award goes to Dan Radakovich for selecting the genius, Paul Johnson!

old gold engineer- That the a-backs are not getting many touches is a function of the triple option, the quarterback read and what the defense is giving them. The first option will always be the B-back. The quarterback always puts the ball in the b-backs gut then depending on what the nose guard middle linebacker does, the quarterback leaves it in or pulls it out and continues to the next part of the option. The next read is on the corner defenders. If they take the quarterback then the quarterback pitches. If they take the a-back the quarterback cuts inside them and keeps the ball. One of the problems against clemson was Nesbitt being rusty and not always making the proper reads on the pitch (He’s such an athlete that it is only a matter of time before that problem is fixed) . Jaybo, having run the system in High School is a little better at the option reads, thus the a-backs getting the pitches more often -see Mississippi State and Duke games.

I think Cooper Taylor should be the ROY. He has been very consistent and has a ton of tackles. Roddy has contributed a lot, but Coop is a critical part of the secondary and has made many key tackles. I can’t help but like Cedric Griffen! Where oh where has AT Barnes been? I have hardly even heard his name all year. He gets my vote for biggest underacheiver.

And last time I checked, Paul Johnson was winning games with a team fielded by 80% of players Chan Gailey recruited.

Dwyer has some monster games despite the fact that they are sacking the line. Roddy Jones can run and catch, who is the fastest guy on this team, maybe Jones. And who knew the defensive line was this good. All you ever heard about was Johnson who is as good as anybody in the country but still may be second best on this line. If these guys had played for Georgia they would have had statues of them already, but the coverage they get here always leaves you pleasantly surprised when they even win a game.

I agree with “Fan of Chan”. I’m glad he is gone though for a couple of reasons. The first is he could not beat UGA. The second is that he tried to get all of the available pro HC jobs and would have been gone from GT if he had gotten one. That said, he did know a good football player when he saw one and was pretty good at recruiting. We are going to miss some great players next year who were recruited under his regime. As for Dave Braine, with the choices he had at the time, why would you not take an former Dallas Cowboy HC that had pretty good success and was from Georgia? Get out to the game this Sat. and support the change.

what most of you guys dont really understand is that you cant just pitch the ball when theres a guy there to tackle you

before the play you identify the man on D you will be pitching off of for the play (usually the OLB on your side unless theyre in a special defense) if he is shot out of a cannon to the pitch back you keep it and just cut up for as many yards as you can and hope the line does its job. But if the man you are pitching off on the play either slow plays it (kind of sitting in between both to try to defend both of you) or if he actually goes for you (QB) thats when you pitch it.

It looks very easy on TV to just pitch it becuase it usually gains big yardage, but if he is doing his job or are a split second late on your decision the option will not work (thats not a rip on his offense AT ALL i love it)

by the end of the year nesbitt wont be 10 times better at making decisions but he will be 10 times quicker with making them which really is more important

The press reports on and backs the sure thing which is not the Tech teams of Gailey. Nothing worse than a sport’s editor lifting your hopes and then Duke or some inferior team bringing you back to earth. Then they couldn’t figure out what Johnston was all about until mid season, now they are wondering where everybody is. It takes the word a long time to get out and once it is out in mid season habits are formed and quite frankly I don’t remember Georgia playing so many television games head up with Tech. Georgia is the soup of the day and should be, let Tech beat Georgia and we will have all those dunk bandwagon fans at Grant Field. It will happen enjoy the time we have.

By TechCrybaby

Lack of depth is nothing new at Tech. Even the 1990 National Champions were thin. Put in Shaw, to rest Nesbitt, and also to satisfy fans who say they want to see more passing. Couldn’t hurt, now could it? Likewise, if B-Back Dwyer is getting hit too much, let A-Back Jones have the ball more. He has fine rushing stats so far. We’ve got to preserve our two stars, injury-free, while using them, too. If the substitutions don’t work out well, I’m sure Coach Johnson will discern that instantly, and put the main men back in.

Hey BE#3, and only UGA fans would have to troll an opposing team’s blog seeking the attention he so desperately craves. Was Momma Dawg not around enough when you were little?

Why is it always the UGA fans causing a ruckus in their never-ending search for personal superiority? It’s always the UGA fans who see a GT fan and say, “That’s an ugly hat.” I just say, “Well, that’s an ugly face, but I’m not going to let it upset me.” And I’m a bartender; I’ll come right back at you when you present me with some asinine, juvenile nonsense. Fine, don’t tip me. I’d rather have the satisfaction of knowing that I was being friendly with you until you decided to turn into an obnoxious, barking cretin. And you know I know that, and that’s why you skimp on the tip; even further proof of your worthlessness as a human being.

Sleep tight, BE#3. We’re both 6-1, and I promise you UGA fans are a lot more nervous about the impending clash between our teams than are GT fans. Plus, we have important things to worry about, like going to work.

I hope you students and young alums of Tech will keep this enthusiasm 10-20 yrs from now if you are still in Atlanta. If you do, then maybe Tech will have the fan support the team deserves, the contributions that go with it, etc etc. It is pathetic how little support that the team has this yr In my mind they are the class of the ACC..i cant believe there are 10K tickets left for a conference game. on homecoming? Are you kidding me? where are the alums? the students cant carry the whole load. you dont need 90k fans..just fill that place up and thats a good enough advantage.

Every time Tech has had a good coach, they have been a national player. Curry, Ross, OLeary. You have another one now. No Tech fan reading this needs to be persuaded to go to the game..but you people need to spread it around and get somepeople in the stadium..with Johnson as coach Tech and UNC could dominate for 10 yrs in the ACC.

And believe it or not, Ga fans want Tech to be good. It makes for a much better rivalry. still wanna kick your butt, but just think how big it would be this yr if both teams went in 10-1.or how big it would be if both Georgia and Tech could maintain a 9-10 Reg season win pace every yr.

Thanks UGASlobberknocker. I would like to see both teams meet with no losses in November.

It’s worth making several points about fan support: [1] Tech has only about 1/2 the student body of UGA. [2] Many Tech grads leave the state, whereas most UGA grads don’t. [3] There is always a large contingent of Tech fans at away games, even distant ones. I went to South Bend, e.g., and there were many Tech fans there. The sports bars here in Chicago are full of Tech fans cheering you on, so you have national support even if it doesn’t always show up in the stadium. I think that most of these fans send money and support, as I do, to Tech. [4] Tech has to compete with the Falcons, Hawks, and many other big city attractions. Athens doesn’t have those distractions. [5] Many Tech students, esp. those from foreign countries, come to Tech purely for the science and academics. Tech sports is a low priority for them. My son was pre-med at Tulane and had to study very hard to get into med school. I used to chastise him for not supporting Tulane’s football team, but he was too focused on getting into med school to even go to the games. This is a problem in every school with high academic standards. [6] Quality usually trumps quantity. We may not have as many fans as some schools, but perhaps they make up for it in the quality and passion of their enthusiasm. [7] I and many others are bombarding the bloggosphere urging Tech fans to come to the games. I hope and think it is having an effect.

Just as a matter of clarification…there are 75,000 living GT alumni. There are 100,000 U(sic)GA alums in the Atlanta area. And these are accurate numbers from a reliable source. So, now we know why the AJC panders to the Red and Black and also why the newspaper is typically written for the 4th grade level.

It also explains the rural attraction of Georgia but begs to offer an explanation why any minority would want to play for a University where minorities are single digits when they could live and play in a town as diverse as Atlanta and receive an education that could lead them to adventures around the world and not some pharmacy or school house two blocks from where they were raised.

GT LOSERS- you’re right, I apologize. I wouldn’t admit I was a dog fan either. Like I said yesterday though. We fans that go to the games ARE embarrassed by the lack of fans. What I don’t understand is why aholes like you come over on a tech blog and state the obvious. You honestly don’t think we know what people say about the stadium not being filled? WOW, you know what, hell, I should be thanking you. THANK YOU! Thank you for letting us know that our stadium is not full, or that we can’t sell tickets. Jeez, I can’t believe your wealth of knowledge. It’s amazing.

Should I go on or do you FINALLY get my point a*******f$&K.

Thank you Tron5000. Your line made my day:

Plus, we have important things to worry about, like going to work.

Yeah, huge career aspirations there BARTENDER! I thought all Tech fans were millionaire engineers?

Is that why tech fans use the ‘would you like fries with that?’ line to UGA fans, because ‘Would you like another beer?’ hits a little too close to home.
