Quick hits

Five things on my mind today…..

1) After facing a highly-motivated team trying to win for their new coach, Tech faces a highly-motivated team trying to save their coach’s job. Here’s an article that speaks to the Cavaliers’ strong bond with Al Groh.

2) Georgia Tech is 5-0 against the spread this year (there was no spread for the games against I-AA teams). The Jackets have consistently outperformed public expectations. Looks like Vegas is trying to catch up. Oddsmakers installed Tech as 11- to 12-point favorites against UVA, despite the fact that the Cavaliers have pulled off three straight upsets.

3) The good news for Tech is that this game is at home. The Jackets have won their two home games against D-I opponents by a combined 65-7.

UVA, meanwhile, has been terrible on the road this year, losing 45-10 at UConn and 31-3 at Duke. But as this article points out, the Cavaliers are a much different team now. UVA is riding high after its third straight win, a dramatic OT victory over North Carolina.

4) Rashaad Reid should do fine replacing Jahi Word-Daniels at corner. The true freshman has played in every game, and he’s got 2 picks and 3 tackles for loss. But who will replace Reid in the nickel package? Tech has been using 5 DBs a lot.

Coordinator Dave Wommack said the options are DeRon Jasper, a redshirt sophomore out of Dunwoody, or moving free safety Dominique Reese down in nickel situations. (Cooper Taylor then slides in for Reese).

“We’ve got to cross-train them, we’re getting so thin,” Wommack said.

Tech also is losing a lot of leadership with Word-Daniels out, Wommack said.

5) We’ll have a ticket update later this week, but what kind of crowd do you expect Saturday? Will it be another crowd in the 40s or will Bobby Dodd be close to full (55K) for this surprising, nationally-ranked team that leads the ACC?

It is not surprising that Tech is doing well. Tech always does well when we have a good coach. Unfortunately, we had the worst coach in the history of college football for the last 6 years. He had no fire in the belly and he destroyed our program for 6 long years. But now we have a GREAT coach….let me repeat…a GREAT coach. He has the fire in the belly. He plays to win. He knows what he is doing. So don’t be surprised when we do well. Be MAD AS HELLE that our program was allowed to be destroyed for 6 long years by the worst coach in history. Thank God for Paul Johnson…and Thank God and Greyhound that Gailey is gone FOREVER!!

Hey Larry: How about the AJC adding videos on “Know Your Jackets”? Don’t you think it’s just a little one sided and biased that the AJC does this for thUGA but not for Tech? By the way, don’t both teams have the same number of losses?

M - we allllll get it. You’ve made your point, enough already.

It does worry me a little about Word-Daniels, especially when our secondary (I feel) is so inexperienced.

Don’t care what Vegas says - it’s a football game, anything can happen.

I’m glad we’re home again for the next two.

Seems as if Virginia is always a great game- love the fact it is a home game for us.

I’m also worried about Word-Daniels being out, but we have to hold the faith that the others can step up and our front four can cause some pressure.

I am looking forward to this game. This team is fun to watch. I think Dwyer has a huge game.

and as far the obviously biased AJC and the ridiculous amount of coverage given to UGA, well, same old same old! Just wait until this weekend gets closer and they really start to hype the LSU game!

Dabo Swinney, Al Groh - - Why is it that we seem to be facing a team each week which is so fired up, and determined to beat Tech, for the beloved coach, and his beloved job? We did Dabo no good at Clemson, last Saturday, so let’s just go ahead and kick Groh into the dustbin of history this week.

On running the table, probability theory illustrates how hard it is. When probabilities can be quantified, the probability of four things happening is the product of the probabilities of each thing happening. So, say the probability of Tech winning each one of the next four games is 2/3, good odds. Then the probability of wining all four is the product of those, which is 16/81, or about 1/5. So, one game at a time is the only way to look at it. Winning the first leaves the probability of winning the next three at 8/27, and winning the next leaves the probability of winning the last two at 4/16. Of course the probabilities of winning each game may be better than 2/3, but the probability products still show how hard running the table is. (Go Jackets.)

Dont care what the spread is ,dont care if Cavs have won a few games, only know that our Jackets are getting better every game .My biggest concern is turnovers and offensive line play, once we get that taken care of we should be in a good position to win out, and that includes the game against the over rated mutts. Our defense can play with anyone in the country and our skilled players are young but showing great confidence in CPJ system. Our coach demands respect from our young squad and he has lit a fire under their arses, maybe the AJC will get on our bandwagon soon….THWG

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!

UVA may be fired up to “save their coaches job”, but the close victory over G-W was just what the Tech doctor ordered. Coach PJ has the team focused and I feel confident they will beat UVA. The real upside for you Tech fans is look what the team has already accomplished. Seriously now, did ANY of you think you would be where you are? Just one loss and a real chance to win the ACC. Even with a total revamping of the offense and defense, and the defection of a few players and recruits, what Tech has done has to be admired.

Good luck with the rest of the year with the exception, of course, of the UGA game.

OK….

One—would y’all quit giving “m” so much attention? Yes, B—- L—— was worse.

Two—If the Cavaliers care so dang much about Groh, why don’t they keep his butt off of the hot seat early on? The Tennessee comparison continues. 1, we lose too often to them. 2, obnoxious fans. 3, they wear orange. 4, their coach seems to live on the hot seat. 5, their coach always manages to keep his job with some key wins.

All Groh needs to do now is eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Golden Corral or Ryan’s, or get training table recipes from Ralph Friedgen. Brie and chardonnay isn’t going to cut it.

Three—Ramble On: you forgot Cynthia Tucker’s pegboy, Jay Bookman. He’s so liberal he has to wear Depends to bed. But I digress…

The point remains: the AUC will never give equal time to either the GOP or GT. I wonder if Tech could introduce a technical writing program, and then expand it into sports journalism (heh heh heh…).

We all know about the liberal media. Has anyone done a study about how much of a homer a typical J-school grad is (regardless of school)?

Four—We better have a sellout. It’s freakin’ HOMECOMING, for crying out loud! Until the game sells out, there better not be one Tech fan watching the game on the tube in a 75 mile radius. Like CPJ? Want to keep him? Buy some tickets already!

I think the coverage balance is fine, considering how many more people are interested in UGA. It’s business, stupid. I’m getting enough GT info to keep me happy.

I’m not happy that we’re in the polls. I’d just as soon be unranked until we defeat UGA. Then, we will have earned a number.

Right now, my primary concern is UVA and their massive lines. We have to get in there and hurry that QB somehow. Until we beat UVA, we can’t think about getting props.

Go jackets. Beat UVA!

I have been impressed by our Jackets so far. Each week we seem to get better. We will have to limit the turn-overs, play tough on the defensive side of the ball, and keep the special teams play up to the high level it has been at to win on Saturday.

One game at a time. We can run the table in the ACC and set up a big game against UGA, but handle things one game at a time. I think Paul Johnson will keep the team focused and have them ready for UVA and it will be a great weekend for the Yellow Jackets!

It doesn’t matter if the stadium is full or not. At $40 a ticket, who can blame anyone for just listening on the radio? We can be sure, though, that the more success Tech has, the more the AJC writers will be harping on the size of the crowd. It happens every time.

UVA has always been tough on Tech. I remember several games in which they beat us on the last play — but we got them on a really big one. So, as has been mentioned, hold the fumbles down, get improved oline play, and get top notch play from our young linebackers and dbacks. I hope there’s a full house (if not, when will there ever be one?) and Tech puts some points on the board. Go Jackets.

I read where VA plays a 3-4 D. Someone enlighten me and tell me this bodes well for us. Does this give us an edge on the option, meaning with just 3 up front we can at least get a few more yards before someone misses a block instead of getting hit behind the line. Not being sarcastic. Really want to know if this helps our offense or not.

Thanks in advance

The only things that sucks worse than Chan Gailey are you losers that defended Gailey and tolerated Gailey (and even some idiots that STILL defend Gailey.) If Chan was still here, we would not be having this great season. And Ted Roof, a real Tech man, beat the living helle out of Chan Gailey in 2003 (do you fools remember that embarassament.) Ted took a dismal team and made them competitive even though it didn’t result in the wins he needed. But Cutcliffe inherited a team that was much better than Roof inherited. Paul Johnson didn’t inherit a better team than Gailey did. So to repeat, we now have a great coach. We used to have the worst coach in history. Thank God and Greyhound that Chan is not here to run our program into the ground EVER AGAIN. Hallleeeeedmalooooyah.

  1. Does anybody ever play anymore b/c ther’re self-motivated?? If coaches will recruit players that are self-motivated that coach probably won’t have to worry about his job. 2.TECH’s history of covering a 10-14 point spread hasn’t been good. Maybe this year will be different. 3. UVA will be better than the 2 1A teams we’ve played at home thus far. They should also be better than when they’ve played on the road earlier this season. Regardless we’ll be in good shape Saturday. 4. Losing Word-Daniels will hurt us some but Reid is a good aggressive player. 5. The crowd will large and juiced on Saturday, the stadium will be electric, and the Jackets will be outstanding. One thing: people get there early, not at 3:45. Lastly, bashing or defending Gailey by now is useless but please don’t use the arguement he took us to a bowl every season. If there had always been as many bowls as there are now, Dodd would have gone to about 18, Pepper would have gone to 4, even Bill Curry would have gone to 2 more. Heck when Pepper was at UCLA he was going 8-3 and 9-2 and staying home.

Going against the 3-4 should make for easier yards up the middle. With 4 LBs, it means a little more speed on the D. It might make it tougher for Nesbitt to get around the corners. Also will make those QB to A-back pitches a little more dangerous. At the end of the day, it will still be 7 guys in the box trying to get into the backfield. UVA has one of the worst run defenses in the conference. My money says Dwyer will have 150+ yards and at least 2 big runs.

Yea gotta give Fred G. Sanford props on being a class act. Thanks my friend…

UVA should not be overlooked, even after the blasting they took against Southern Cal, and the embarrassing loss they took against Duke. They are in position to completely transform their season from the laughing stock of the ACC to the a legitimate ACC contender. I hope CPJ lets his players know that this cant happen on our field. Their win last week against UNC in overtime had to be a huge confidence builder for those guys. Its up to our team to slow down that momentum, and playing against our type of offense is exactly the formula for doing that. This offense wears down defenses, its been proven time and time again, and as soon as the defense thinks they have all the reads, CPJ throws something at the defense they havent seen and catches the defense off guard or atleast put them on their heels.

GO JACKETS!!!

By TechFan

October 21, 2008 12:37 PM | Link to this

I guess I am one of the few Tech fans that is not as blown away by our offense as others seem. I am VERY happy with where we are and I think CPJ is a good coach from the standpoint of intensity. But I think whether or not this offense will hold up year after year in and out of the ACC is still up for debate. It shows definite signs of being able to do so and I am hopeful that with a few years of recruiting and running it that it will turn into what CPJ thinks it can be.

But we are going to face better defenses than Clemson this year and in the future and I would really like to see the offense consistently move the ball and put points up in the high 20s or better before I fully jump on the bandwagon. I don’t claim to be a football expert so if anyone can rationally tell me why I should think differently at this point I am open to being convinced.

No matter what though we are doing WAY better than anyone thought this year and it is exciting to be at the games for the first time in a while. GO JACKETS!!

I agreed with Tony on the rest: Dawgs over Vandy, Jackets beat Clemson, Bama defeats Ole Miss, SC upsets LSU at home, Vols hold off Miss. State in a close one. We were correct in all except LSU beat SC in another close one. [Also, Vols won big - not close.]

Techfan, do not worry about Paul Johnson’s offense. It will work and it will work beautifully. We are nowhere near running the full package of option reads and pass plays. Our QB has only run this offense 4 games IN HIS LIFE. He is good, but he is nowhere near as good as he will be when he fully learns to read the defense. The offensive line has been killing us so far but that will also improve. The future is SO BRIGHT YOU WILL HAVE TO WEAR SHADES. While I am impressed with the current record, I do think we are somewhat lucky to be in this position. The boston college, gardner webb, and even clemson game could have easily gone the other way. Until our offensive line starts blocking better, discussions of a conference championship should be kept to a minimum. The team overall though as a whole is improving and I believe will continue to do so under CPJ.

By RT

October 21, 2008 2:03 PM | Link to this

m I am with you 100% on Gailey. Gaily would have been afraid of losing to Garner-Webb and would have played Nesbitt and probably got him hurt thus likely changing the outcome of the Clemson game and eliminating us from the ACC championship hunt. PJ recognized the fact that ONLY the ACC standings matter and even a loss to G-W would not affect our ACC chances. It took guts and smarts to keep Nesbitt out of the game, something Gailey never had. I think we’ll do well against the 3-4. I was at Clemson and the whole second half it seemed like we could run 4 yards-in-a-cloud-of-dust at will. I think we’ll do even better running up the middle against UVA.

Hey, here is an idea, only throw the ball on 3rd down. 2 yard run, 3 yard run, 5 yard incomplete pass. Give Nesbitt a chance to get into a groove. I think this would make or offense more productive and not so predictable. If we could gain some stability on offense we would be able to run the table in the ACC. Good luck and GO JACKETS

By AlabamaRamblinwreck

CPJ has GT winning without a major area of his team performing well, which I believe a great coach can do. The reason I say that is because our o-line has been so bad most of the year. There blocking has looked more like matador techniques most of the year. Wommack has done a great job with the defense, but everyone must realize that CPJ hired him, and so I ultimately give the head coach the credit for the success we have had on both sides of the ball.

I personally cannot wait to see this team when CPJ gets offensive lineman to play like he needs them to play. It is going to be a lot of fun. Actually, it already is a lot of fun.

This weekend should not be a problem. Unless we turn the ball over in our own territory numerous times, I don’t think UVA can stay close.

I am driving over 400 miles (round trip) to be there this weekend. If everyone will come out that is within a 4 hour driving range of BDS, we can fill up the 55K seats. This helps recruiting and the team on the field. Let’s support CPJ and the players with a great turnout!!

To: M Hey I love your unbridled passion & support of PJ. However, I have to disagree with your choice of worst TECH coach of alltime. That dubious honor should bestoyed upon the infamous Bill Lewis. Lewis could not even build upon a National Championship layer that Bobby Ross left behind.

Chan had to go because his teams could never win a game when it mattered & he never beat GA . Chan is a nice guy but it’s pretty obvious it’s win first.

Don’t really know if PJ is really a nice guy. I believe he has made it clear he really doesn’t care what we think. He is a win 1st kind of guy. I am glad the fire is back @ GT.

You also have to take into account that the third string QB “tried” to run the offense against GW and he is about as far from a CPJ prototype QB as you can get. And then last week, the starting QB was a guy who had barely run this offense before taking three weeks off.

I am very happy with where the team is currently given these challenges. I also realize that our toughest games are in front of us.

Take one game at a time and FOCUS. There is no other game than UVA this week.

I would much rather play a UGA with no more losses for several reasons; more potential for beating a higher ranked opponent, more confidence on UGA’s part (hoping they lose some focus) and just better for both teams to meet with as good a record as possible.

TechFan There is nothing wrong with Paul Johnson’s offense. There is a learning curve that comes with it, and we’re seeing that now when Nesbitt makes the wrong read or the offensive line struggles to block. It will work fine once everybody gets it down. CPJ’s option-spread may be the perfect offense for GT to run. We’re not going to beat big schools running the ‘Pro-Style’ because we’re never going to out recruit them. They have lots of money and loose academics for their athletes. So we need an offense that maximizes the talent we can get, punishes big defenses and keeps the other team’s offense off the field. Having said all that, the offense is a lot closer to being successful than it appears. Pay attention to the games. There have been so many plays that were one good block away from being huge. But instead, the blocker utterly failed and his man got through for the stop. Once the blocking comes around, the offensive production will soar.

If you are still weary, take the time to search YouTube for ‘GT Football 101’. There is part of the video where CPJ draws out the Flexbone and shows how it can be used as a regular I-Formation w/ 2 WRs , 1 TE, a FB and a HB. The TE is the stationary A-back, just lined up off the line of scrimmage and the HB is the A-back that went into motion. It’s is a very flexible formation, you can do tons of stuff with it, even use it as a 4 receiver set when you sent the A-backs out. Patience…

so, i guess everyone’s heard the greyhound line enough.

maybe we can have a contest to come up with different ways to say “thank god and greyhound.”

Thank Allah and AirTran; Thank Jesus and JetBlue, etc.

Anyway, I’ll write about it for tomorrow’s paper (a bargain at 75 cents), and hopefully have ticket numbers, but Johnson made a pretty blatant plea at the press conference today to Tech fans to fill up Boddy Dodd Stadium. He was basically saying how loud it was at Death Valley and how nice it would be for the players if they could have the same advantage and be shown that kind of love. (i’m paraphrasing. i would never stop laughing if i heard johnson use the words “show the players some love.”)

I warned everyone before the season that you need to be patient with the spread option. The line blocking schemes and the quarterback reads are so much different that anything any of these players have ever ran. I have watched CPJ’s offense since the GSU days and never ever in all those years have I seen any quarterback (and he’s coached some good ones) or offensive linemen come in and play up to the capabilities of the offense the first year. The reads are the key to making the offense go and they are tough to grasp without countless repetition. That’s why you see improvement game by game and after a year in the system they finally get totally comfortable then look put. And it’s not just quarterback reads but the offensive linemen have to learn their reads and know their responsibilities depending on what the defense does. Give them time in the system before complaining about the O-Line play. Firing out and blocking like they are being taught now is totally different than how they were taught their whole careers.

It is not surprising that the country wiii be doing well is doing well. Our country always does well when we have a good president. Unfortunately, we had the worst president in the history of the USA for the last 8 years. He had no fire in the belly and he destroyed our country for 8 long years. But now we will have a GREAT president….let me repeat…a GREAT president. He has the fire in the belly. Hewill surrender to win. He knows what he is doing. So don’t be surprised when we do well. I am a bit concerned that Correy Earles is starting. He has dropped three passes when he was wide open and should have had big gains and/or tds (two last year, one last week). I’m not sure that he is a good blocker. I hope he proves me wrong, but I am still concerned.

AlabamaRamblinwreck makes a good point. CPJ knows his team’s strengths and weaknesses and coaches accordingly. He adapts his coaching, shows you a pattern, then when you least expect he breaks the pattern with a surprise. It’s also refreshing to see a coach that coaches from his assessment of the situation at hand and not from a laminated play script. I guess I’m old school, but all this modern wrist reading before plays is a bit distracting and irritating………UVA is going to be tough. Forget the rankings, the ACC standings, last week, the week before that, and focus solely on the Cavs……Most of you regular posters know I played at Georgia Southern and have also always been a Tech fan. …. At the GSU-App. State game Saturday, I noticed quite a few GT hats in the crowd. CPJ is pulling some support in South Georgia. Embrace it even though some of you look down on “sidewalk alumni”. I’ve been called trash, redneck from a hick school, etc. from Tech fans on these blogs. From the empty seats in Bobby Dodd, Tech could use some sidewalk alumni. They could also use fans with the spirit to match their team’s and coaches’ intensity. I was at the 1999 GT/UGA OT game and Bobby Dodd Stadium was rocking. You have it in you. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t be that way at every home game. Especially when every game is so meaningful now.

HOW TO HELP FILL THE STADIUM and MAKE MO’ MONEY and HAVE BETTER GAMES. (1) RE-ALIGN THE ACC DIVISIONS; I suggest COASTAL (or WESTERN or SOUTHERN) Div to be MIAMI, FSU (a natural), GT, CLEM(a natural), UNC (a growing power) and DUKE (historic opponent) and ATLANTIC (or EASTERN or NORTHERN) Div to be BC, MD, UVA, VT, Wake, & NC State. (2) NO FCS (I-AA) teams on schedule; mostly more SEC opponents; more “name” opponents, mainly from the Southeast. WE DON’T NEED NO MO’ STINKIN’ CUPCAKE GAMES!!! Any comments?

OK folks..Here’s the deal.. I had already invited several of my family and friends over Saturday for some BBQ pork, beer, and lots of football in the form of GT/UVA on ESPNU and UGA/LSU simultaneously on two TV’s. Several of my family/friends are Dawg fans and I promised them they’d get the Dawgs in HD if they’d come. GT/UVA would be on the secondary TV since ESPNU is not in HD on my Dish Network anyway. The emails were sent today and I’ve already gotten a few affirmatives…………Then I read this on the AJC……“They’ve worked hard, they’ve played hard, they deserve to have a good crowd in there to watch them play Saturday,” Johnson said…….I couldn’t agree more…..When an old GSU Eagle asks for support, I’m willing to give it….After a brief consultation with the financial manager (AKA-Wife), the decision was made….. My family of four will be making the 130 mile trip to Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday. If you are a GT fan in the vicinity and you don’t join me, you are chicken sh!t. Join me at the steps after the band march down the hill. Let’s sing the White and Gold, the Ramblin’ Wreck, and get ready to kick some UVAss. Now, if you will pardon this sidewalk alumnus, I have an email to type and send to family and friends.

Calvin:

I know that engineers (especially IEs such as myself) can be cheap b@$+@rd$, but c’mon, pay the 40 bucks…

Besides, you could’ve bought one of the “Jackets Nest” season tix for $150…that’s less than $30 a game.

Reckbert:

We have about one additional SEC team on the sked most years here on out. We go to Missy State and Vandy next year, have a home-and-home with Ole Miss in 2010/11, host Vandy in 2012, have a H&H with Bama in 2012/14, a H&H with Auburn in 2017/18, and a H&H with South Carolina in 2021/22.

There are open dates remaining in 2012 and beyond. Other FBS OOC games include Tulane, MTSU, and Syracuse.

We have no more than one FCS team scheduled in any future year. Of course, we didn’t have more than one this year, either.

THWG:

My interpretation of that article was that we would lose one of the games we are slated to win, while still being favored to win each of those games individually. To put it another way, a coin toss is 50-50, but four coin tosses all coming up heads is 1 in 16.

AJC doesn’t give Tech equal coverage because Tech doesn’t have an equal fan base. Not saying that means UGA is a better team (though that is where my allegiance lies), but they have a larger fan base in the state and even in the metro area. By the same reasoning, Ga State will not get the same coverage as UGA or Tech. AJC is a business and like any business they have to commit resources where they generate the most profit.

And congratulations on the ranking Techies. Best team you’ve had in years and a lot of that can be credited to Johnson. My guess is Tech should be the favorite to win the ACC next year. But I think you’ve got at least one and maybe two more losses coming this year. UNC is playing really good ball this year and that will be a tough game in their house. My prediction would be UNC in a close game. UGA is playing like garbage, but hopefully home field will give the Dawgs and edge to win in what will also be a close game. See you in November.

I second the motion from BUY TICKETS!!! I don’t live in Atlanta or nearby, but I urge those who do to go to the game and beat the bushes to get others to go. It’s HOMECOMING for Heaven’s Sake! I’ll be watching on ESPNU and hope to see a full stadium.

Our biggest game in 1990 and since was against #1 UVA that year and the games since then have been exciting. I don’t understand why fans are not more motivated given the great start and the importance of every ACC game right now.

The biggest crowd was for Miss. State. It shows that our ancient ties to the SEC are still deep.

There is nothing worse, however, than seeing Georgia fans show up at Tech events with UGA hats and clothing (when GA isn’t even playing). I have never understood this display of discrespect. Observing them, one can tell they crave attention. Usually it is fans who didn’t go to UGA.

Yes, I am a Georgia Fan. I wish the Tech fans luck in selling our their stadium. I will be watching the GA game because I believe in supporting the products of our state’s fine penal institutions and giving players a second (or third) chance. I don’t care for the hippocrit of a coach because he speaks to church congregations on Sunday after encouraging bad sportsmanship to his team (Floria game celebration, GA defensive players try to hurt the QB on every play). However, overall….I love them and enjoy drinking a beer while I watch the game. You can’t do that at Tech’s stadium like you can in Athens or Baton Rouge.

Scottbravesfan - As a whole, no Atlantans don’t seem to support their local teams. I assume you are excluded from this assumption? I have season tickets for the Braves and the Falcons. I don’t go to Falcons games because of the fans. I think the red and black travel from Athens to attend and it seems they’ve had the alcohol flowing the entire time in between games. The language and horrible behaviour keeps me and my family away from both venues. As a native Atlantan, I do support my pro teams…and the hometown YellowJackets. Tech football doesn’t exclusively recruit in the city of Atlanta, nor are all the students and alumni from the city of Atlanta. I don’t assume all people in Athens are GA fans and act like lunatics…just as you can’t assume all Atlantans don’t support their teams.
