25 exhiliarating hours
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I imagine Tech fans enjoyed the weekend.
Start with Tech’s 21-17 win in Death Valley Saturday afternoon. Sure it wasn’t pretty, but it was the second time this season Tech rallied in the fourth quarter to win an ACC road game. And QB Josh Nesbitt, in his first action since the Sept. 20 hamstring strain, looked better as the game progressed.
Then you watch B.C. hang an “L” on Virginia Tech Saturday night. The 28-23 loss not only elevates the Jackets into first place in the Coastal; it exposes the Hokies’ offensive woes. They return two picks for TDs and still can’t win.
Wake up Sunday, and soon the AP media and USA Today coaches polls come out. Tech makes the rankings for the first time this season, landing at No. 21. (Which by the way is the highest of any ACC team).
Later the BCS standings come out and Tech ranks even higher: No. 18.
All of that happened in about 25 hours. When is the last time the Tech program had a day like that?
Injuries might have dampened the enthusiasm. Hope to get updates today on Jahi Word-Daniels, A.J. Smith and Tyler Melton.
So what do you think was the weekend’s most significant development, and why?

3 big players injured, scary… but the biggest news at this point looking back and forward is UVA is on a 3 game win streak, but they have o come to our house and win on the road, which the only W on the road for them has been Richmond. I like the rankings, and think it’s more than fair where we landed, but there’s no since in basking in it, too much work still left to do. It was a helluva weekend!

We need to cool off a hot UVA team this week. I think Coach Johnson will keep them focused and keep from patting themselves on the back too much. I was not impressed with the ground game this week or the field goal unit.

While I’m very proud of what this team has accomplished so far (I don’t think ANYONE expected us to be 6-1 at this point), I think we may be overrated in the polls. I hope CPJ is able to get the team to ignore the rankings and just concentrate on one game at a time. As long as we keep winning, the rankings will take care of themselves.
The loss of Word-Daniels on the corner is HUGE. We have to be careful or we could wind up losing four of the remaining five games and lose all of the momentum the program has developed in the process.
Concentrate on beating UVA and forget about everything else.

Larry, such days are not so uncommon for Tech…we have often been ranked, even under dear departed CG. What has been rare is staying there..wehich we have not done consistently since the days of George O’Leary. ‘Course, that was only 10 years ago, not nearly as long as UG?a’s last MNC. So kindly don’t make it sound like it is that big a deal. It will be quite the norm under CPJ.

If Correy Earls can adjust to the game speed again he can help with the loss of Melton. Roddy Jones looks good returning punts.

Tech is 6-1, but has looked good in only one game, Miss State. The O-Line needs to step up and play, Nesbitt needs to get better making his reads. Tech has not been a fun team to watch, and could easily be 3-4 at this point. A good team will steamroll Tech with the way the offense is playing

21 in the polls is great. By season’s end we could be in the top 10, by week’s end we could be out of the polls. That’s how delicate a situation we’re in. Like O’Leary said, every week is a season, focus only on the week ahead. My biggest concern is the offensive line. For those moron naysayers who still question our offensive system, what other offense could we run if we had to depend on knocking people off the ball 35 times a game and pass protect 20-25 times a game with the O-line we have. I love those guys up front, they work hard but they do have limited talent. We have a great system b/c if we can just block the people we have to block the defense can’t be right on the guys we don’t have to block. Two perfect examples from Saturday were Dwyer’s 31 yard run in the 2nd quarter and Nesbitt’s TD run to finish that drive. Clemson didn’t cover the dive and Dwyer is off and running and then Clemson had 3 guys tackling Dwyer and Nesbitt goes in untouched. You people that want to see the ball tossed around the park need to go watch Valdosta State or GSU and you’ll be perfectly content. In the mean time either get on the boat or shut up.By m

The most significant development is that Chan Gailey is still gone FOREVER and we sill have a real football coach. Allowing Chan to destroy our program for 6 years was unconstitutional, because it was definitely cruel and unusual, and just plain unnecessary and STUPID. Thank God and Greyhound that Gailey is gone forever. It can never be said enough.

Tech82 - overated in the polls??? Come’on, we are at #21. If we were in the top 10 I would agree, but we are clearly as good or better than teams in the #15-25 range.
Now, let’s fill up BDS@GF for homecoming and make a statement against the Wahoos. A solid win against a team that won 3 in a row will push us further up.
The injuries to Jahi Word-D and AJ are troublesome, but we keep seeing young guys come in a do a decent job. Loss of Melton is not a concern. He already lost his job returning punts and has been a non-factor elsewhere. And Correy Earls needs to get his head back in the game. He was one of our best receivers last year but he keeps dropping balls that hit him right in the hands. Josh needs to be confident in throwing to someone other than BeBe, but he can’t be when guys drop passes they should catch.

All being in the top 25 does is get a summary of our game posted in more national media - big deal. We’re not going to play in the BCS national championship, so the ranking does not matter. Just win, baby.
BTW - can we start getting Morgan Burnett on some Thorpe watch lists?

We’re minus 13 or 11 vs. UVA depending on the book. We SHOULD win this game. Of course, we have to TCB and we can easily lose this game, just like any of them.
This is the penalty for good performance—there’s a lot more to lose after each successive game you win. I can guarantee you that, say, Cutcliffe and Duke aren’t sitting on these pins and needles.
O-line still needs to improve and, for gosh sakes, can’t we cover a kick return better? Both have gotten better but neither are where they need to be.
We, the fans, can keep an eye on FSU—both against VT this week and as next week’s guest. But I would imagine that CPJ will have anyone who even mentions the team in Tally this week running laps.
If we don’t appropriately whip UVA and if FSU soundly beats VT (go Noles!), we will probably not be favored next week.
Lastly—I think the rating is fair. And, as I said a couple of weeks ago, UNC being ranked while Tech and FSU weren’t was BS.

FSG, I agree on one point and disagree on a point. Being in the top 25 is good for the publicity. Summaries in the newspapers/magazines and highlights on TV are what attract high school athletes. You’re right about Burnett - he should be 1st team all-conference this year and All-American next year. Jabster you’re right, with every win it makes the next game that much more important.

Pump the Breaks Tech..Watch out for this UVA team..this team has been drinking that same stuff Maryland has gotten into which could be soylent Green (it’s people..it’s people)..I think Tech will be ready if anybody will have them going it’s CPJ.

I think the most significant development was how well our defense held up after way too many 3-and-outs from our offense. I was particularly impressed with the interceptions. One thing I’d like to see improve is the D-line sealing the deal after bursting into the backfield. We’ve let the opposing QB slip away quite a few times when we had hands on him. Similarly on offense, the system is so close to working. If the blocking would just improve, there could be some huge numbers from this offense down the stretch. There were countless plays Saturday that were a single block away from being huge, but the blocker failed to get his man.
Another great development Saturday was ‘one of the least penalized teams in the ACC’ (VT) getting torched by the officials a few times against BC. Sorry, they deserved. The officials helped them beat GT; they were owed a bad game. Ah, and the classy Tyrod Taylor, throwing a punch at the end of the 2nd quarter. What a guy… They’ve been lucky so far this season and I hope it has all run out.
Rankings mean nothing until the end of the season when the bowl game assignments come out. Ignore them. All that matters now is Ws and Ls.

UVA is hardly hot. They had one decent drive in their game this week, which happened to be in the last minute to send it to OT. Their O and D are in the bottom half of the conf (especially against the run). Yes, they have a win streak, but it has been way uglier than ours. Clemson has one of the statistically better ACC defenses and Nesbitt was rusty, hence close game. Luckily we have Nesbitt and Jaybo available, so we should be fine. Josh will be better than at Clemson and Jaybo will be there if needed.

Great game for Tech on Saturday.
Not sure how anyone would consider Tech overrated at #21 in the AP, or at #18 in the BCS for that matter. 6-1, on top of your division, and seemingly the cream of the ACC crop…you guys should be enjoying this.
Regarding your offense, (and I’m not including the GW game that you played with the 8th string QB) consider you have played arguably the best three defenses in your conference all on the road, and gone 2-1 in those games. That’s impressive.
The “O” will get better with reps, and having JN back healthy is big for you. You should roll over UVA, UNC, and Miami. FSU could give you some trouble, and hopefully we are playing better by November 29.
Good luck til then, and for crying out loud, enjoy your success.

Good point GTRich—while UVA is on a winning streak, both UNC and UVA looked like POS Saturday and UNC gave UVA the game on a silver platter, with 3 TOs to UVA’s none. UNC basically gave up the last couple minutes and UVA pounced on it.

Whoever says this offense isn’t fun to watch is insane. This is tough, smart, FAST football.
Would you rather watch us take turns trading touchdowns every drive like the big twelve? I’d rather see guys run up, shove each other around, eat up yards with a solid running back, and then rip defenses apart with the option play. Then you can throw a field-length touchdown pass to a wide-open receiver once or twice a game and never even worry about it being intercepted.
I noticed the Taylor swing too. Where does Beamer get these guys? You think Johnson would put up with Nesbitt pulling something like that? Look for Paul Johnson to begin taking the ACC spotlight away from Beamer’s teams for the next couple years—where talent meets discipline.
And thanks Bankerdawg. For the first time since I’ve been a student at Tech I’m actually excited to see that game in November. The outcome will likely be the difference between a good bowl and a great one for both teams.

Bankerdawg Thanks for the comments. Re the polls, 2 points of view both have merit: [1] The polls don’t matter right now. We should only focus on the next game with UVA and not be distracted by polls. [2]* The polls do matter especially if you lose because if you rank higher, you will end up higher after the loss.* Tech and UGA both are 6-1, yet UGA is #7 and Tech is #18 in the BCS because UGA started out #1. Where you end up determines which bowl you play in or if you can play for the National Championship. Rankings also have an impact on TV exposure. Personally, I tend to favor [1]: focus on winning the next game against UVA. Winning is more important than worrying about the polls. Yet, where we are in the polls is also important.
I thought the defense was the key factor against Clemson. The offense played well enough to get the came from behind TD, and that was huge.
We got decent officiating for a change. Close calls went both way I thought and balanced out, which is as it should be.
I am concerned about the 3 key injuries.I hope the subs will step up if they have to as Jaybo did when Josh was out.
UVA is hot. It should be a great game. Too bad it’s only on ESPNU.

There is no reason to blame Chan. Anybody would take the money that was offered to him. If you can do a lousy job and get a raise you would take it also. Dave Braine was the problem. Got to give it to you guys, you won on our field and came from behind to do it - as someone on the VENT wrote today, you know it may be your year when your kicker runs down from behind a world class sprinter on kick return!
I am not sure what to make of your offense - it does look like a high school scheme, but it is working this year - not sure whether it will stand up next year when you have to play everyone who has played it for a year and the footspeed bettr comes into play as a catch up. aNd, as I said before, you won and that’s the most important stat!
Regarding your center/guard play - I noticed that your center is offsides on just about every play (yes, a center can be offsides) - his head is beyond the ball, which is in the neurtral zone, hence, he is offsides. Hope the coaches get him back on the right side, or that the refs continue to turn a blind eye to it.
Regarding the new uniforms, the white on white was OK, but the helmet color is really oogly. But, if you win, every color is good!
Can’t wait to see the UVA and FSU games - good luck the rest of the way!

Great win Jackets! Then again any win is a good win. Winning is wonderful and I hope that Tech keeps it up. I do have two concerns though. The secondary has always been suspect against good throwing quarterbacks. All the knuckleheads worrying about people overlooking UVA, relax, enjoy the polls for the week. I am more confident about PJ than I ever was with CG. The line on the game is 12 1/2 which is a joke, but then again, I thought that the USC/Wash line of 43 was a joke too.

Now we will find out if this man can coach, I think he can but the concentration is strained with a ranking and that is what has got Tech this far. I was thinking Carolina was our end of the track but now I am worried about this team coming in here this weekend. Surely we can look at the film and see what has changed for Va. that made them so bad and now so good. You have got to show a lot in a deal like this where Southern Cal blows them out and then they blow a few people out themselves. I can see vast improvement in the quarterback for one at a distance, but this one will need tearing down and figuring out. In the meanwhile I keep saying we will pass more to get the 8 out of that box. Va will not be able to defend like Clemson and will have to stuff the box which is got to open up some passing or they will give the run to us.

Being ranked in the polls is good only if you don’t get full of yourself and lay an egg. Recent history has shown Tech not being able to sustain its rankings for very long. But we’re now in a new era on The Flats. PJ is not only a fierce competitor but he’s also very intuitive about being over confident and won’t let the team take UVA lightley. Yes, UVA is on a three game winning streak but their wins are not as impressive as ours. In fact, after watching part of their game with UNC, they seemed more more lucky than good.
If this were another road game I might be a little worried. But playing at home is a real advantage for us, especially if we get our butts out to Bobby Dodd and make some noise for a coach and a team that deserves every ounce we can give them? Besides, we’re due for for a big offensive day and with the way our defense is playing we should roll big.

Weve outscored our opponents 116-28 at home this year. We have had some ugly wins (WHICH ARE STILL WINS) but only one has been at home (GW)
look for the stats to keep up this weekend against UVA

Clemson Fan, I’m not gloating. It was a hard, close game, just as I expected. I blogged that it would be 20-18: a point too low for Tech, and a point too high for Clemson, as it turned out.
But here’s the thing: I don’t know why I worry about Clemson, ever. The Tigers have a monster stadium, and they get a lot of respect on the national scene, but when it comes to playing Georgia Tech, they usually fold. In 73 games against my Yellow Jackets, the Orange team has won a grand total of 24 times. I guess when somebody has your number, they just have your number.

Alright, somebody besides me has to admit m is funny. I chuckle every time I read that line. I think he ought to be able to post it for 6 years, the same amount of time we suffered with “the worst coach in the history of the world.”

m is only funny in the same way that it would be funny to have a mentally handicapped cousin who could be counted on to yell something like “mashed potato” at every family gathering. It would get old and you’d ignore it.
