The view from Clemson
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Larry Williams, Clemson beat writer from The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston, found time this week to answer five questions about Saturday’s game.
What is the atmosphere/mood around the Tigers now?
I think the team feels rejuvenated, but I’m not sure it’s unanimous because it’s clear some players — tailback James Davis among them — thought Tommy Bowden shouldn’t have been forced out. Also, Cullen Harper’s alleged comment about Bowden deserving his fate caused quite a stir among the staff and team. Still, it appears the offense is really excited about the prospect of a more aggressive philosophy. Former offensive coordinator Rob Spence, fired Monday by interim coach Dabo Swinney, caused a lot of frustration with his reluctance to take more shots downfield. Swinney is a charismatic guy who will have his players whipped into a frenzy by the time they reach the top of the hill Saturday.
How much disarray is the O-line in?
Pronounced disarray. Injuries have decimated this crew, which entered the season with very little experience in the first place. Guard has been the hardest hit. Bobby Hutchinson, a former student assistant who really shouldn’t be playing regularly at this level, has been forced into a prominent role the past two games. Right guard Mason Cloy suffered a knee injury against Wake Forest but should go Saturday. Fourth-year junior Cory Lambert, who’d moved from tackle to guard before the Wake Forest game, suffered a foot injury against the Deacs and will be limited at best. The Tigers seem OK at tackle with Chris Hairston and Landon Walker, but we’ll see if they can handle Michael Johnson and Derrick Morgan.
What do you expect from Willy Korn? (With Cullen Harper now scheduled to have surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, it looks like Korn will go the whole way).
I’m not sure what the coaches expect from Korn. I asked an assistant two days ago how Korn has looked in practice and he said “like a redshirt freshman.” I think they’re high on Korn’s future, but it’s hard to get a read on how he’ll react Saturday in his first college start. The main reason they elevated him to the starting role was because his mobility can help negate some of the protection problems on the offensive line. But can he read a defense? Can he muscle in a slant or thread a corner-post? Not sure about that.
Can you give me an example of the hype that has surrounded Willy Korn since he committed?
Let’s put it this way: Early last year, Harper threw five touchdowns in a game and played flawlessly. Korn entered the game in mop-up duty, and the fans reacted as if Danny Ford was back on the sidelines. There’s a lot of affinity for this kid because he’s the local hero, and a highly coveted recruit who committed to Clemson very early in the recruiting process. There’s a segment of fans who’ve been calling for Korn since the start of last season, even during periods when Harper was flourishing.
Can the starting offensive tackles block Michael Johnson and Derrick Morgan?
Boy, not sure about that one. Clemson’s tackles really struggled last week with Wake Forest’s Matt Robinson. Robinson is a very good player, but he’s no Michael Johnson. Hairston is still recovering from a badly bruised knee, and Walker is a redshirt freshman who’s had his ups and downs thus far. If the Tigers are going to throw downfield with regularity, these guys are going to need some help with pass protection.
Interesting stuff from Williams. What struck you most?

There has been very little talk about Clemson’s defense. I believe that will be the difference. If Dwyer can’t hit for more than a 5 yard average it will be a close game. It will come down to coaching adjustments and in that case I trust CPJ. Tech 24 Clemson 10

I think our defensive front will play aggressively and make Korn look the nervous red-shirt freshman that he is.
My only concern is that Swinney will be motivated to throw the ball down field and our secondary seems to be our weakest link. We could be very susceptible to giving up a big play or two.
Overall, I like our chances to control the pace of this game and wear down the Clemson defense for three quarters before blowing things open in the fourth.

I remember a game a few years back when the starting Clemson QB went out and we thought the game was over. In walks Woody Dantzler and brings the game down the wire. Ever since then I never underestimate any mobile / athletic quarterback.
That said, I would think that Korn will need a better O-Line and more experience to score a ton of points on GA Tech even at home. Unfortunately for him his strength of running the ball is also our defense’s strength. I would have been much more worried about Cullen Harper passing against our secondary. I would have also been more afraid of playing Bowden with his back against the wall at home than of an interim coach. I know he has nothing to lose but if he loses it isn’t as big of a deal either.
In any case, I agree that we will eventually wear down their defense and score somewhere around 28 points. If Korn can’t throw the ball then I think Clemson scores around 14. Should be an interesting game no matter what and a great opportunity for Tech. Go Jackets!

If Tech can’t win this game, they’re not a very good football team. Tech’s defensive front should be able to manhandle Clemson’s line. After that it’s a matter of defending screens, QB scrambles and called runs, heaves down the field, and tricks. A good team won’t geat beaten by a team that does not have a passing pocket or a between-the-tackles running game. As for offense, I hope Tech will show that it has improved significantly from its last two efforts. This means cutting down the fumbles. Tune in Saturday to find out if Tech is any good.

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!
While enjoying UGAs season so far (with the exception of Bama) I have also enjoyed watching Tech’s success. Conventional wisdom may go the route of saying Climpson will be inspired because of the coaching change, however, the Jackets will definitely be inspired after last weeks subpar performance. I guarantee you Coach PJ lit a fire under their rears in practice and they will come out this week with a vengeance. Tech will win again.

Wow… Only intelligent comments thus far (except for m8 of course but even his comment was not the same one he pastes everyday). *I’m shocked! Thanks for your comments **Fred G., level headed as always.
One think I think should be added to the discussion is the role the GT linebackers will have to play. With a weak Clemson O-line facing a very talented GT D-line, I expect a lot of screens and maybe even draw plays. I don’t know if Korn has the talent/experience to complete the long pass, but I doubt that he is going to have many chances to stand back there and try. If the LBs and the secondary play well for GT, the D-line will force Korn to throw a few picks. If Nesbitt doesn’t put the ball on the turf after a long break, GT will win the battle of turnovers and easily win the game.

Nice, GTA—I agree. I think the Clemson beat writer is optimistic in saying any position on that line is even OK. They sure won’t be after tomorrow…
That said, it will probably be closer than anyone would like, but Tech will still pull one out.

Our D Line is the difference. If we don’t drop the ball it’s a blow-out similar to Miss St. If we drop it once, hopefully it’s near our goal line and it’s still a blow-out, similar to Duke. If we drop it more than once it will be close.
For all the mess Clempsin is in they still have some very good talent. Fortunately it is mostly freshmen.

If Tech does not win this game by a comfortable margin, we really need to go back and do a lot of thinking. I agree the other team has a lot of emotion going for it, but this is a GOOD Tech team. The only reason they lose is because of mental weakness, which I dont expect of PJ. We have far more talent than Clemson, and a far more motivated and coached team. More importantly, we have a team, instead of a bunch of sissy prima donnas like Clemson, who throw fired coaches (who recruited them, and gave them scholarships, and whose trust in them was probably the reason for his undoing) under the bus.

Amazing that some writers questioned getting rid of Bowden, when in his 10th season the OL situation is as bad as it is.
Rob Spence should have been fired after the Kentucky bowl loss (taking his weak-armed QB and throwing 40 times vs. the 110th-ranked run defense).
Clemson will hurt the rest of this season, but a change had to be made.
For you fans of the SAT:
Bowden was to Clemson as Donnan was to UGA

Hyped up emotions only get you through the 1st qtr. With a student assistant filling in on Clemson’s o-line (has someone checked his eligibility?), plus the other dinged up youth on the line, Spiller being out, R-FR QB, FR RB sharing duties with Davis (who may not have his heart in it judging by his reaction to Bowden’s dismissal)…. I like GT’s chances to create INTs and fumbles. GT’s offense should be fine with Nesbitt and Jaybo back in action. Close through 3qtrs because of the Clemson D, then GT rolls through the 4th.

I’ve got one word for our Defensive Coordinator…..“SPY!”
When facing an athletic QB, assign a linebacker to mirror him so that he doesn’t break off any big plays.
That ought to be easy to do this week since we probably believe that we won’t need to linebacker help to get pressure on Korn or to stop running up the gut.

No doubt that Clemson will play with emotion, but the fundamentals of football are blocking and tackling. A redshirt Fr QB behind a weak and makeshift line going up against Walker, Richard, Johnson and Morgan is a matchup that Tech should hope for every game.
And while our secondary is perhaps our weakest area on D, they have actually played above expectations so far this year. It just seems like Clemson is going to really struggle on offense.
The question is, will the Jackets offense be able to control the ball and the clock? I think Clemson’s defense is actually pretty good and we may not be running up and down the field quite like against Duke or MS St. I think Tech wins going away, but I won’t be surprised if it is a tight, defensive battle for the first 3 quarters.

” By the truth” the truth is the players got Clemson where they are. Dropped balls, missed tackles, blown assignments, complaining instead of leading. That will be there this Saturday just like it was there against Wake, and all the rest of the season. Clemson’s problem is a bunch of immature football players with no disciple. Until they bring in the next coach this trainwreak is going to stay the same. Next year the right coach will come in here and it will be an over night change. You need a Gary Patterson at TCU type that coaches tough hard nose football. You’ve got the talent, you are just a bunch of milktoast, the right coach will end that.

Oh, and Clemson fans, excitement and a pumped crowd doesn’t win football games. Ask the UGA fans here, they’ll know all about that. Not saying Clemson can’t win, but the players will have to gut it out, and that o-line has to step it up, or Korn won’t have time to do anything.

Hey Origional
plenty of people on this blog attended the University of Georgia. And you are correct fans and a crowded stadium don’t win ballgames. Other than your game in Athens this year this will probally be the only crowd Tech will play in front of. And for an institution like Ga. Tech that is pathetic. Why are you Tech bloggers so proud to fill up a blog but can’t fill up a stadium on Saturdays? You Tech bloggers always boast about your intelligence and how much your above UGA in every category and try to use it as a crutch when you fail at something. The last time Bobby Dodd Stadium or Grant Field, was renovated you ended up losing several thousand seats. Now that’s a real engineering feat if i ever saw one. Expand for less. The question you asked ” are there any fans here that actually attented the university” Are there any here that attended Tech should be your question. From the looks of North Avenue on saturdays you folks are running low on fans, and need not worry about UGA fans.

Look, Dawgfans, Reading some of the trash talk above and on other Tech blogs does a disservice to Bulldog Pride and Class. The fact that we have had recent success over the Yellow Jackets does not give us license to come over here and boast, taunt, flaunt our “superiority,” and try to degrade Tech on their blog. This is poor sportsmanship and a complete lack of class. I can recall Bobby Dodd having a long string of victories over us, and I do not recall Tech fans acting this way. Of course, that was a different era and probably a more civil one. I regard Tech as a home state team. I pull for them to represent us well and win all their games, except against us. The Dawgs have a lot to be proud of: their recent high national rankings and major bowl appearances, a National Championship, Two Heisman Trophy winners - Frank Sinkwich and Hershel Walker - and an overall winning record against Tech. On the other hand, we should respect the fact that Tech also has a rich football tradition: 4 National Championships, great coaches in John Heisman, Bobby Dodd, Wm. Alexander, and Bobby Ross; GT 222 Cumberland 0, the first school to play and win in all 4 major bowls at the time: Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Cotton, and for a long time until recently the best bowl record of any school. All I am saying is that we can be intense rivals but still show respect for each other, the way Olympic athletes do. Furthermore, when visiting fans including Yellow Jackets come to Athens, we should act as good hosts. There have been numerous complaints, most recently from Alabama fans, that they have been very badly treated in Athens, and that is a disgrace. The trash talking and bad behavior does no good to Bulldog Pride, Class, and Reputation and simply leads to similar smack talk from Jackets and other rivals. In my view, it does none of us any good to get down into the gutter like that.

Dawg, maybe if your program would worry more about playing non sloppy football, and less about filling the stadium and having them all in matching tees, crying over Moreno’s average play not being plastered over the country, and touting his average performance this year as Heisman worthy, your team wouldn’t be embarrassed by the only decent team they have played so far.

I agree w/ Ben. I hate playing a team w/ nothing to lose. Look at what its goten Virginia. This is a trap game for GT and Bowden’s firing couldn’t come at a worse time.
There will be 2 decisive factors:
Turnovers- Will Nesbitt be able to shake off the rust and handle the football
Our Defense: Can our secondary and linebackers step and and cover the “all or nothing” plays their take.
The first two series will be running Davis and short out routes for Korn to get some confidence and rythm. I bet they are really really teaching him a 2 step drop and throw to avoid the rush.

Clemson does have a good set of receivers that could give our secondary a tough time, if Korn has time to throw. I suspect he will have the time due to his mobility. A mobile QB always spells trouble.
He won’t be a drop back passer, he will be throwing on the run. Don’t know if he is good at that or not.
They will also run a lot of draws and screens.
Since we don’t know how Korn will fare under pressure, the best defense we can have in this game is to keep the ball and score points. Then we don’t have to worry about the new QB.
Go Jackets and score a lot of points!!!!

Thanks DawgPride for a classy posts. Both sides need more of that and less name calling and cheap shots.
The Clemson game will tell us a lot. Although they are going through rough times they still have some studs. If we look really good in this game the rest of the season looks bright. However, …….
Glad to see that A.J. is finally getting to play. He has had a lot of bad luck but should help the oline a great deal. Go Jackets.

GM Sorry GM, the same things are getting old about all the UGA fans attending class at the University, I have several close friends that are Tech fans and none of them attended Tech but, they go to the games and support Tech football. Just get rubbed the wrong way on this subject. My mother picked cotton half her life and couldn’t attend college, but she made sure it was available to her chrildren so that we could attend. This BS about being an alumni before you can be a fan is simply that BS.
Good luck today against Clemson, always a hard team to beat for UGA, some of the hardest fought games i’ve ever been to were against Clemson. Loss of a coach may make this team even harder to beat but, If Tech gets that option going with those 1st string QB’s playing Tech shouldn’t have a problem, Tech’s defense gets that qb for Clemson rattled early i don’t see Clemson scoring much.
Tech 31 Clemson 9

PJohnson’s offense is truly showing it’s abilities against a big fast defense. Nesbitt is about as fast a lineman, he refuses to look at the pitch until too late. Unless you have a decent passing attack, you can’t run as much as they do. Yeah, every 15-20 plays somebody breaks a decent run, but it’s inconsistent. When Claybo Shaw was healthy, he proved that mixing the pass and run was successful, but Nesbitt is lucky to complete a pass, plus he fails to throw it away when they have him deep behind the line. I truly and honestly feel they will be lucky to win any of their remaining games against FSU, NC, VA or UGA.
