Lackluster performance
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It was probably a good thing this game wasn’t on TV.
If Georgia Tech was up for this game, it sure didn’t look like it. Granted, the Jackets played No. 3 QB Calvin Booker the whole way, except for a few snaps taken by No. 4 Bryce Dykes.
But 10-7 over Gardner Webb? Unbelievably, the Bulldogs had a chance to tie the game with 9 seconds left. But the 44-yard field goal try went wide left. Tech fans could finally relax.
When Dykes fumbled a snap late in the third quarter, Gardner-Webb took over at its 36. The defense rose up and drove the Bulldogs backwards. And the defense kept getting stops, including a huge sack by Derrick Morgan with Gardner-Webb in Tech territory.
It was all on the defense because Tech’s offense was totally out of rhythm.
The Bulldogs came in with one of the best run defenses in I-AA, and it was no fluke. They swarmed Jonathan Dwyer (except for his 79-yard catch and run in the first half) every time he carried it. Tech’s O-line got very little push.
Positives: By keeping out QBs Josh Nesbitt and Jaybo Shaw, who did not dress, the Jackets should have both available for next week’s game at Clemson.
In addition, Tech showed improvement on special teams. (Special teams were called out during the week). Tyler Melton had a couple nice punt returns, Scott Blair boomed a punt that was pinned inside the 5, and Blair also hit his fifth straight field goal.
But overall this was a subpar effort, and very nearly an embarrassing defeat.
How much does this performance concern you? Was it just an aberration?

That looked like a chan gailey debacle. That would have been the worst loss since 51-7 in athens and the worst non-UGA loss ever. PATHETIC describes our offensive line. PATHETIC. We might lose the rest of our games. Did Chan really leave us with O-Linemen this bad. We got kidding me.physically dominated by Gardner f’n Webb, Are you

What it means is that GT better keep Nesbitt and Shaw healthy the rest of the season or they will get embarrassed by a big school. With all due respect to Booker, he’s got no business running the option based spread offense.

Very concerning. Our offensive line does not really seem to be improving. This was a major step backwards. On top of that, we had 3 more turnovers. Against a Div IAA team!!
I am not sure what else to say. I am truly flabbergasted about the offense today, and I don’t need to hear about it being our 3rd string QB.
Go Jackets!! No Matter What!!

Yesterday when everyone was talking about being 5-1 going into Clemson and wondering who would be favored in that game I said that we needed to concentrate on Gardner-Webb and worry about winning one game at a time. This is why.
Clearly, Tech was looking past this game and it almost game back to haunt us. Regardless of the fact that our 3rd string QB was playing, the responsibility for this game falls on Paul Johnson and the coaching staff. Our scout team should have put up more than 10 points against Gardner-Webb.
Hopefully, we have a good week of practice and bring the A-game to Clemson.

Maybe we are overrating PJ’s coaching ability. If this team had beat us, almost everybody at Tech would have dropped off the bandwagon. I am now scared of the Clemson game. It will tell us if the Gardner Webb game was just an aberration. If Clemson blows us away, we will be back in the Chan Gailey mode.

I would have rather we played only 11 games this year and leave the Army date open. Scheduling theses schools does nothing for us. The fans could care less, the team could care less, beting them does nothing for you but losing to them would be DISASTROUS! Stop scheduling the Jax St’s and G-W and schedule the poorer schools from the Big East, Big Ten, etc.
We definitely WILL NOT be favored now at Clemson.

Name one team that can start there 3rd string QB (who could not beat Taylor Bennett on the depth chart)and have an offense that seems to be in sync? They played well enough to win and thats all that counts. No one expected a blow out with a qb who does not fit out system. All teams struggle at times and all teams will stuggle with their 3rd string QB against anybody’s 1st string denfense. If they win at clemsen they should be ranked.

Obviously we (the fans) were flat out LIED TO regarding the seriousness of the injuries to Shaw and Nesbitt.
What I thought I heard was that Nesbitt was back at practice and Shaw was being held out for precautionary reasons. Their condition(s) must have been much worse than we were led to believe.
Paul Johnson is supposed to be “Mr. Straight Shooter,” but he has a lot of explaining to do after this one.
I understand being conservative, but we played with absolute DISASTER today.

Not ugly. Fugly! Actually, the only difference between Johnson and Gailey in this case is that Gailey would have found a way to lose. Kudos to the defense, who had to play all day due to an amazingly inept offense. My heart goes out to Booker, who is obviously a team player, but it’s also obvious why he could never crack the line up at Auburn or Tech, and Johnson was a moron for keeping him in there. Hang around. Hang around and hang around and sooner or later a very weak team will beat you.

We had to play a non running QB at a running QB spot. They didn’t respect his running ability and that led to them stopping the other reads. It is what happens when the QB is not a threat to run.
If we have Josh or Jaybo back for Clemson we will look much much improved, and this game should be a wake up call for GT.
Don’t sweat it too much.

Is anyone else as ready as I am to see Nesbitt back in the games?? I like Booker, great kid and great heart, but his showing today is why he is the third string qb. Yes our o-line could’ve helped him out a little more, but how many missed passes did he throw? Missed passes are solely on the qb’s shoulders. Now let’s move past this very sloppy win and get back to business with Clemson.

Why in the world would you not at least have either Nesbitt or Shaw dressed out and put in the game at crucial times to at least pick up some first downs and give the rest of the offense some confidence. What’s the point of saving them for Clemson if you cannot even beat Gardner Webb? This was coaching and decision making at its worse today. If the 3rd string QB Booker cant’t run the option, he can’t run the option. Come up with a different plan before leavig him in to lose the game. AWFUL..to make matters worse, I had to listen to this game on the G-W website, the announcers were screaming so loudly you couldn’t even understand what they were saying at times but knew Tech was being humiliated. Why are GT fans who do not live in Atlanta not able to listen to the game on the Ramblinwreck website?

Truly pathetic, what the he* are we doing playing our 3rd string QB when Nesbitt and Shaw both practiced all week. Are they more hurt than CPJ let on? If they practice, PLAY THEM!!! No game this day and age is a given, just ask Michigan. Booker is NOT an option QB, if you want to play him so much, get a big lead then let him play. This could have been a DISASTER!! This total is on the coaching staff, they didnt prepare the team, especially the offense. Once again the defense saved us from an embrassing defeat. If they put 8-9 in the box, then throw the da* ball!! I am not feeling good about Clemson at all, let’s hope this is an freak game.

An aberration, mainly because Tech was relying on its No. 3 and 4 QBs today. It’s hard to beat anybody when you’re forced to go that deep in one position, especially one that important. But the lack of running game today, with Dwyer getting bottled up is a huge, huge, huge concern. Tech’s interior line play has left much to be desired and today was a prime example. Nesbitt and Shaw better be healthy for next week, or it could be a long afternoon in Climpsun.

For real. Quit your b***’. What you just saw was GW starters vs. GT scout team. We played our 3rd and 4th string QB’s, with the 1 and 2 NOT even dressing. Our 3rd and 4th stringers playing against GW starters is a srimmage for them. So we beat them 10-7. Nice scrimmage. And a beautiful setup for Clemson, who has ZERO game tape on us before next week. You think this was a weak performance? Not at all. It was an EXPECTED performance. Our third team against their first team ends in this score, every week. Bravo, Coach Johnson. Misson accomplished. Clemson has no idea what we look like next week, and Nesbitt and Shaw are healthy. So shut up with the whining and let the genius (Johnson; not you) do his thing. I can’t wait to be in my seat (and the tailgate afterwards) at Clemson when we demolish them. Same for UGA. Ask yourself this: would you want to play poker with Paul Johnson? I wouldn’t, because I think he is f*%kn with you, and you don’t know what cards he is holding.

Austen,
I agree with you. I live in Greensboro, hometown of Nesbitt. I could not listen to the game on radio due to the fact that UGA shares the same radio station as Tech. Because they played at the same time Tech fans have to suffer. I then tried to pick it up on 790 the zone online but no dice there either as they were playing some national show. I had to follow it on GameTracker which was about 3-5 minutes behind the actual game. I also kept in touch with some friends who were there. Everyones stomach was turning late in the game. I hope this serves as a wakeup call but still give credit to the Tech defense.

With all respect Mr. “Seriously”, that’s a bunch of BS. I could buy it if we got up by 10 (which we did) and never let it get below a TD (which we failed to do). I honestly believe that had the last-second FG had been good, we would have lost in OT.
One thing you got right. Johnson is more of a poker player than I believed. He went “all in” and stared down the guy on the other side of the table. He let us believe that we had a pair (Nesbitt and Shaw) in the hole when we actually had nothing.
But, poker face and all, I bet his sphincter tightened when that FG attempt went up.

What happened today was that our team got publicly undressed and embarrassed by a team that Sagarin had rated as #211 in the country going into the weekend. They just watched a third-rate program stuff our out-dated offense.

You had a third team QB out there today and also the team probably didn’t “get up” for a game with GW. What you also saw was a young team doing the things a young team does—being inconsistent. Now some even doubt the ability of the coach whom you praised to high heaven last week. Patience! Your team will get there and do well. This game should help us bring this season in perspective. The only real quality win is at BC. Our offensive line was dominated by Duke last week until we broke it open late in the 3rd quarter and domintated again today. We have been winning with skill players breaking big plays on offense and a DOMINANT defense. It would have been easy for the defense to fold today and they played an OUTSTANDING game. Shaw deserves a lot of credit for winning the previous 2 weeks. Apparently PJ cannot adjust to calling a passing game which is WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLING WITH BOOKER AT QB. Bad coaching job and defenses have been loading the box the last few weeks and will continue to do so until we make them stop with a passing game. The main thing is that we get/stay healthy for the UGA game and go to a decent bowl. I don’t see us winning the division with this line but you just never know. GO JACKETS !

Our vaunted defense gave up 14 first downs and almost 250 yards to a I-AA school. Tech was looking past this game plain and simple. I wouldn’t be surprised if they spent part of last week actually practicing for the Clemson game.
We are VERY fortunate to be 5-1. Hopefully, this game serves as a wake up call and the team gets its focus back before next weekend. If we don’t have Nesbitt and Shaw back next week, we’re toast.

Well, techies, you should not even by ranked in the FCS subdivision top 25, most lest the BCS. More good new techies, the rest of your schedule now has film on how to stop Paul Johnson’s offense. Enjoy this “win”, because it was your last one.

CPJ can call all the passes that he wants to…Booker couldn’t hit a downfield pass. No doubt he’s a good kid and a team player, but he’s no D-1 QB (not even a 3rd stringer) in any offensive scheme.

As I said last week, we could lose the rest of our games after GW. I was pretty much counting on naming our number against GW. Now I don’t know if we will even be in any of the remaining games. Today was an all time low for GT and CPJ. MJ was right. The only team that could beat us was ourselves. We put the hurt on ourselves today.

The only thing that is more pathetic than the performance today is all of you aholes that call yourselves GT Fans. This is just what our adversaries said would happen when adversity struck. And it is also what CPJ said would test our character when we faced some adversity in the mist of this success. We are still the team that has given us much to shout about the last 5 games and it is the same GREAT COACH that has a great winning record and track record. Our guys struggled today but still won. I bet none of you ever had a bad day in your life, Right? Most of you are losers. Probably the same people that stayed at home to listen to the game on the radio. These are times when both TECH Fans or so called fans and our Football Program needs to step up there game. At least our guys showed up to Bobby Dodd Stadium and WON THE GAME. I can tell that most of you were not at the game. Case in point. Josh Nesbitt did dress out today.
UGA Trash you LOST in your 31 point effort to ALA. Sure you would take that lost instead of a Win. You are Dumb. That is why you route for the Dawgs and spend your time on he TECH Blog. Can’t read, can’t reason, and you don’t even understand that an ugly lost is better than a pretty win. Ask Oklahoma how they are feeling. Yes I am upset with our performance, but I am more than happy with the fact that we are 5-1 not 4-2. For the weak waffling TECH FANS…Kick Rocks.

Better an embarassing win than an embarassing loss. BTW, what was happening on the sideline in the second half, when it looked like several coaches/trainers were holding down a man for a good 10-15 minutes on the ground? (The game was ugly and boring enough so that I couldn’t help but notice.)

Everyone seems to be very depressed about this. The truth is this means that Tech has, for the first time since O’Leary, managed to get through all of their easy games without getting upset. That means the Gaily era is finally over! Now hopefully we’ll manages 2 or 3 more wins before the end of this season, and NEXT season this team will be truely dangerous.

There are few Tech Fans on this site. Many Georgie dawggies and lots of whiny nerds who don’t even go to the games, but few real Tech fans. Today was an ugly win and nearly worse, which is still a helluva lot better than any kind of loss. We got #1 & #2 QB’s some more rest, some other wounded guys a little more healing time, and everybody (including the coaching staff) got a reminder about how close to mediocre we can be if we don’t bust it every play. Any time you can learn a lesson and still win the game is a good day, and both Johnson and the players have taken responsibility for lack of preparation and lack of execution. Stop whining, you twits. Anyone can see we have a good coach and a good team, which is 5-1 in a difficult transitional season. Dodging bullets isn’t much fun, especially from a 1-AA gun, but it’s a damn sight better than catching one.

Come on - it was Gardner-Webb. If you were on the GT team and playing them, how excited or pumped up would you be? Add to that a 3rd string QB who had terrible timing and it is what it is!!! We will be just fine. The coach is great - our team is 5-1 going into Clemson. This just brought us back to earth. We were doing so good. Good to see we can do terribly and still win. We will go 11-1 don’t worry.

LIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS IN THE NORTHEASTERN PART OF GEORGIA, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND A RADIO STATION TO LISTEN TO THE TECH GAME. HISTORICALLY, I GO TO MOST HOME GAMES BUT SOMETIMES THE 200 MILE DRIVE IS JUST NOT WORTH IT. SO I DIAL UP WQXI RADIO STATION, OR SOMETIMES WREK RADIO STATION OR WTSH-FM (107.1) IN ROME AND LISTEN TO THE GAME ON MY COMPUTER.
I COULD NOT FIND THE GAME ON THE INTERNET ANYWHERE. I SUSPECT THAT IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT SOMETHING CALLED “GAME TRACKER” IS MONOPOLIZING THE INTERNET RADIO BROADCASTING. THIS LITTLE PUPPY IS BY CBS AND COSTS SOME SERIOUS MONEY. THEY HAVE IT FIXED TO WHERE YOU CAN’T JUST PAY TO LISTEN TO ONE GAME AND MUST ENTER INTO A MONTHLY OR ANNUAL FEE.
I AM AMAZED THAT EVEN THE SORRY ASSED WQXI DID NOT BROADCAST IT ON THE INTERNET.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO ON THIS INTERNET RADIO ISSUE?

I don’t know which is worse, the UGA fans predictably jumping on an opportunity to bad mouth GT, or GT “fans” who think we will play like we did today the rest of the year.
No, at least UGA fans I expect this from. GT will have Josh/Jaybo back next week and we will play better. One game doesn’t define a season, and to act like it shows no understanding of how football is or how important a running QB is to our offense.
I would rather take pot shots from UGA fans all day then have to read any more of this pessimistic bull crap from so called tech fans.

This is exactly the type game Tech needed. They weren’t inspired, probably thinking they are a little better than they really are, but yet found a way to win. No matter how good a coaching job your coaches do, it is still the players that have to run the plays, do the blocking, etc. I would agree that Booker is not an option qb, but a pro-style player, but you still have to execute. I think probably that Nesbitt should have played a few snaps, just to get the rust off, but Tech should have played a lot better than they did.
Forget this game, it is over, start concentrating on Clemson and lets play them one at a time.

I agree, Hiawassee, wholeheartedly about your internet radio concerns. I cannot understand why they cannot charge on a per game basis for the radio broadcast. And $4.95 should be plenty for an internet radio stream.
But instead, someone is being very greedy trying to get a monthly subscription price from everyone. This is unacceptable, and everyone that is concerned should voice these concerns to the GT athletic department.

WHAT WAS UP WITH THE TRAINERS ON THE TECH SIDELINE DURING THE 2ND HALF APPARENTLY WRESTLING A GUY ON THE GROUND? WHO WAS IT AND WAS HE HAVING SEIZURES OR WHAT? I went to this game and I got to tell ya, Tech looked like a team which just installed a new offense alright.
But wait- in effect it was a new offense. Playing your 3rd and 4th string QB’s is like playing a new type of offense. I mean Booker is slow, although he scrambled for the game ending 1st down he continually missed the hole on the keeper option b/c when he kept it the hole closed before he could get through it.
Just remember guys Nesbit and his speed make this new offense look primed when we still have a subpar line that was not recruited for this blocking scheme.
We’ll be Ok and we will be awesome when PJ gets lineman to run this offense with.

Hey not, I wish you good luck againest the tigers next week. Some people we be calling for your new coaches head next week but all you have to do is beat the tigers and you can have a Bowden but why bother, it would only get worse..Tech coaches get too much blame. Chan wasn’t that bad of a coach.. His problem was he could not give the top talent a good enough reason to come to tech and it always comes down to the players. The team with the best players wins most of the time. Your coach deserves some of the blame today for not making tech see that there is too much talent out there for a team to take another team too lightly. Don’t be suprized if you beat Clemson sat. Ypu will be up for it and very dangerous. My Dawgs have a very loseable game againest Vandy that could be nightmare. Too bad tech and ga. fans can’t reach a middle ground and pull for each other againest out of staters. Beat the tigers and put Bowden out of clemsons misery.

Wow, what a game! I commend all the GW football players for a job well done! I don’t understand why in the world Coach wouldn’t play his starting QB’s. But hey, that’s why he makes the big bucks. I have been to all the games and I can tell you that one of the most glaring weaknesses we have is the offensive line. They have been man handled on more than one occasion. They will get better with time, but everybody needs to remember, we are an average team at best. This coach must recruit before he will ever be competitive. We may have a few skill players that are exceptional, but the horses on the offensive line are soft, and maybe not the best athletes. The defense has one or two players with exceptional skill, but the rest are average at best. Just remember, we are a couple of years away from good football, and that’s only if Coach can recruit!

i mean come on if a pro-style offense scores 10 points ppl dont blame it on the scheme its the players
its just because theres those dumb tech fans out there that thought his offense sucked b4 he got here and r too retarded to admit it works
i mean just look at the stats last year here was our scores through 5 games… 33, 69 (samford), 10, 23, 13 this year 41, 19, 17, 38, 27, 10

GHOST DAWG, I actually agree with you on several of your points. In fact, I think the “good old fashioned HATE” bit is rather silly and worn, and I try to have a good rapport with my Georgia neighbors despite our mutual good-natured ribbing. The more reasonable and intelligent fans on both sides keep their perspective and realize that the more their rival wins, the sweeter the victory over that rival when it happens. As for our more obnoxious brethren in both camps, I guess they are better off hatin’ on some rival, nameless fans than they are beating their wives or kicking their dogs. For the first time since Dodd and Butts/Dooley, both teams have top-notch coaches at the same time. I’d rather have a shot at a highly-ranked UGA at season’s end any year. Good luck with Vandy and the rest, and we’ll be seein’ you in Athens next month.

Not sure if it was exacerbated by his injury in first half or not. He was up and talking after what seemed like more than one episode and was carted off the sideline sitting up and coherent. GT Staff came over to tell the family member that he was ok and going to be fine.

The season starts next week. We have played nobody so far except for VA Tech and we lost to them. There is no way that a Division one school should beat a D2 school by only 3 points even with their #3 QB. Our O Line and entire team has a lot of issues and you will see why in the next 5-6 weeks we are not in the top 25. PJ needs to recruit his players and more than 1 year to get this team in shape. I believe in him and his philosophy so lets give him time to prove it works. I am happy with 5-1 but I will also be happy with 7-5 this season. If we do better great. Ok, so we didn’t show up against a lesser team? Big shock. We had a third string QB and too many backups playing due to injuries. I didn’t see the AJC splashing huge headlines LB injuries (like UGaY this week.
Yes we should have whipped them regardless. But we won.
I want to know really, who are the fans saying “we will get killed the rest of the season”? Kind of dumb if you ask me. Did you guys even bother to watch the first four games? I will bet about 10% actually get off their computers and go to games.
And on that note, of those 10% that do go to games - don’t boo your own team. That’s weak.
And UGaY guys go home, get a life, and off our blog. Tech whipped and embarrassed one of your SEC teams who beat your #13 team, and gave #5 and #9 (who is now #3) a serious run for their money. SEC? Really? Or is it “ESPN give me/SEC a huge ego boost to overrate me just like Notre Dame/CBS”?

I am going to stay positive= Tech beat Miss St. who beat Vandy today. Nesbitt/Shaw at QB has averaged @ 28 points a game this year. Looking forward to Nesbitt’s return. Besides the d-line this is a very young team with a new coaching staff and scheme and is 5-1. Tech’s first string defense has only given up @ 6 touchdowns in 6 games (excellent job).

Some of you have not really studied football for long have you? Sure we played bad on offense but we were using our 3rd and 4th string qb’s. GW is a pretty good team, at least they were today. I’m concerned about the O-line but we will be fine. Coach Johnson obviously felt Nesbitt and Shaw should rest.
If we had won this game 40-0 we might have gone into next week with a big head. We beat Clemson next week 10-7 and everyone will be very happy. If you look back Tech has a game like this just about every year. A lot of schools do. They are still 19-20 year old kids and school work hits hard around mid-October.

Tech players were as interested in this game as I was. I spent a majority of it in the club lounge with my wife and kid. They weren’t even putting the score on the TVs in lounge. Did I care about the score? No. CPJ was not going to lose today. A lot of guys got some PT and I got a buzz of that $2 ripple they serve up in the lounge. Everybody’s happy. Tech will roll the rest of the season! THWG!

CPJ is an awesome coach and he will win championships at Tech. The option is not a gimmick. Fair weather fans are welcome to abandon ship any time they please. If you can’t take a bad game… which was a win even.. then go pull for another team. And when your next team loses, jump off that wagon too. As for UGA fans on here, get a life…. or a national championship in my lifetime. whichever comes first. GO TECH and To HeII with GEORGIA!!!!!

For the holier than thou upset by those of us who are still shaking our heads after witnessing a truly embarassing performance this afternoon, you might consider these observations. ““I hope they’re embarrassed, I am. I hope they are. If they’re not, we won’t be very good.” and describing it as a “comedy of errors.”
Those are the quotes from CPJ, and I couldn’t agree more.
As for myself, I knew going into the year it was going to have its ups & downs but the one thing I felt like I didn’t have to worry about seeing was a team come out flat & looking unprepared as we’ve watched time & again in recent years. But that’s what today looked like, especially the apathetic performance by the offensive line. As bad as Booker was (and he was truly please-don’t-let-him-take-another-snap terrible), he didn’t get anything to speak of in the way of help outside of one play.
Thank God the defense showed up and the special teams showed improvement. And for now my fingers will be crossed that CPJ won’t let anything like this happen again any time soon.

Oh my, I’m still screwing my head on straight. And UGaY guys are still pathetic for being on here….
Hope Sedric is okay. Looks like the Macon paper has the real story on him (seizure history/potential and today’s issues). AJC is only running with “CPJ says he will be fine”. Doesn’t look that way, unfortunately.

It is a sad day to be a tech fan, not because of the team or the coach, but because of the fans. Grow some balls, there are going to be some not so shiny games. We are fine, CPJ is a great coach. UGAy would tease us no matter what, (it’s called rivalry morons), so don’t listen to them. Remember this HUGE bump in the road is still a win. Johnson is going to bust some balls over this (I’m looking at the O-Line), and this is what makes him a great coach…and this is why we are going to be fine. Will we lose some more games..of course…everyone does. Don’t get bent out of shape.
I hope jumping off the bandwagon kills you.

Folks, this is college football. On any given day any team can win or be beaten. There are no dynasties. Look at Notre Dame. Look at Michigan. Look at Vanderbilt.
GT is a solid college football program. They can compete. But they can also be beat. Today was a lackluster game but they won. Next week will be another opportunity.

Earlier this week, I said we need to stay focused on GW and not talk about Clemson until Sunday.
The O line got whipped. I watched #31 on GW’s defense manhandle Howard and others on the line. No holes for Dwyer to be found anywhere. No pass blocking. All of that really concerns me especially with Clemson coming up and in a nasty mood. We better be really fired up for them. If we don’t have Jaybo or Josh, then we might as well not go.
The defense didn’t look much better than the O. Yea, we sacked the QB a few times, but we gave up too many yards. And this was a div 1AA team. We were lucky to win this one.
I know CPJ has the team going in the right direction, but I would have thought he would have motivated them a bit more. This game film should provide a lot of coaching opportunities!!
Today’s game shows the importance of having a quick QB that is capable of running the offense and reading the defense.
Now let’s talk about Clemson…

I guarantee you there were plenty of games won by Bobby Dodd against inferior foes that were just as close as this one. What separates winners from losers is, well, winning. I’m sure the Yellow Jackets grew some character today. And I’m sure CPJ will remind them of it all week.

I have seen many Tech teams over my years and nothing has changed. We continue to get average players and average coaches. We will never get back to the upper tier as in the past. Coach Johnson should have had the team ready today…no excuses! I doubt if we will win anymore games this year and we don’t deserve to. I am very disappointed in this new coach and think it was a bad decision.

Jeez… some of you people need to go to Peachford. Our team came out flat against Gardner-Webb… does that surprise anyone? I probably would have rather watched a scrimmage than watch GT play Gardner Webb.
There are several posters that have complained about “bad coaching” with regards to keeping Booker in the game (wtf?), even though Dykes fumbled when he was brought in, Nesbitt is nursing what we hope won’t turn into a nagging injury, and Jaybo has a concussion.
Furthermore, Paul Johnson has said repeatedly that the key to this offense is repetition. Absolute precision, and therefore the ability to make decisions quicker than your opponent, comes with repitition… Calvin Booker (great kid) really took the bulk of the snaps for one week. One week! I swear that we have some of the worse, most reactionary fans in all of college football. We’re actually giving UGA a run for their money in that department.

Did you really expect a QB who couldn’t pass Bennett or Reggie Ball on the depth chart to actually do something productive today, did you. He has never started for a reason! I bet the famous Bobby Knight rant will be PG compared to this week at practice. Not too worried though. Remember, we were only supposed to win 4 games this year…did we all forget that. One note to leave you on, it could be worse…we could be Notre Dame!

Did any of you even show up to the game? Nesbitt was dressed out, he just never played. Booker needs to be put on scout team though, and stay there. If I ever, ever see his butt in another game and we aren’t up atleast 30 points, I will be severely p**. There are no excuses for being that terrible as a senior in college at your position. As soon as CPJ was hired, he should have immediately gone to work losing weight and getting faster, but obviously that didn’t happen. He may have heart, but he still wants to be a pocket passer(which he isn’t even good at), making him pretty much unuseful to our offense. He throws like Reggie, and with no excuse to do so.

They sometimes have many other issues to deal with, girl friends, class, hairdo’s etc. We won the game!! LARRY I blame you! I said yesterday that you shouldn’t be talking about Clemson since we had a game to play today, and I mentioned a loss and a tie to then 1-AA Furman. You jinxed us! All seriousness aside, I don’t really blame you. I do have the following concerns: [1] Were Nesbitt and Jaybo really that seriously injured that they didn’t even dress? If they are, I am truly worried about Clemson and the rest of our games. If they aren’t, then I question the coaches’ judgement since they should dressed and been inserted in the 2nd half. We almost lost this game which would have been a disaster of epic proportions. [2] Why weren’t the players up for this games and ready to play? [3] Booker and Dykes looked OK in the Miss. State game, but apparently were not OK in this game. I couldn’t find a radio station on the internet so I had to follow on Gametracker. [4] Based on comments above the O-Line was pushed around, players didn’t bring in the plays the coaches called, and there was general chaos.
I guess we can forget about cracking the Top 25 this week.
ON THE POSITIVE SIDE a disaster was averted; a win is a win is a win. Most teams have a down Saturday - hopeflly this will be our only one. Perhaps this will be a wake-up call for the team not to dwell on its exciting success prior to this game. This should make them want to make up for this against Clemson.

October 10, 2008 8:41 PM | Link to this I disagree: Longhorns beat #1 Sooners, Gators will upset LSU, Miss. State upsets Vandy, Gamecocks will derail Wildcats, Penn State beats Wisconsin. I concur: Dawgs get revenge on Vols, Tech will win big over GW [I hope they can get up for this game], Tarheels beat the Irish, Auburn over Arkansas. Mo. over Okla. St.
I was right on all my disagreements with Terrence [or was it Tony?]: 5 for 5! I was only wrong on 2 agreements: Arkansas [I started to pick them!] and Oklahoma State,[and that Tech would win big]. Overall, 8 out of 10 vs 3 out of 10 for him. Ha! Ha! I won!!

Thanks defense. There seem to be games like this every year that teams are’nt up for when they think they are. As for down to the 3rd/4th string QB (Tevin Washington being redshirted), maybe for Booker or a pure passing qb we should go to our run and shoot package if it’s implemented or maybe Johnson can move one of the A’backs scheme wise into a fullback with power I, like Lucas Cox and Dywer Keep it simple as it seemed Booker went for the more difficult throws like Bennet last year which could be why a lot of these passes wereincomplete. Obviously in this offense we will need 4 to 5 QB’s every year who can step in if needed. Don’t undersell Gardner Webb either as they played well. Maybe a more simplified scheme is needed for Booker and Dykes if they get in the games ahead. We have 6 extremely tough opponents ahead.

I’ve watched Tech games for 55+ years, we are fortunate to have PJ. This is the most motivated team I’ve seen in years and the players reflect his attitude. Our G-W game performance was wimpy but it’s a win. Now we can get on with the rest of the season. They are still OUR Yellow Jackets and we need to support the team and PJ and stop whining. And enough about Gailey he is history. PJ and the team will be ready for Clemson.

it was more important for PJ to keep Josh on the bench and getting better - even if we lost to GW - than playing him and getting hurt. although a 1aa school, not a conference game. IF VT loses two games, we have a shot at the championship but only if we win all of our conference games.
BUT, even if we run the table and don’t get in the ACC game for the title, look at how uga fared last year with the same situation.

The reaction of Tech fans to this “win” just shows what a razor’s edge the football program is skating on right now. The Chan Gailey era nearly destroyed Tech football. Dan Radakovich is gambling everything on Paul Johnson. If Tech has another dismal season, the bottom will drop out of the GTAA finances next year.
Take a look at the 2007-8 annual report. The GTAA lost nearly half a million dollars last fiscal year. The increased income from the PSL program was more than offset by the drop in AT donations. Radakovich really screwed up when he eliminated the AT points program in favor of the PSL. Now he has a stadium full of fans who will demand a good season, or they’ll take their money elsewhere. Loyalty is out the window, because everyone knows they can always get season tickets any year they want. Unlike an SEC team, Georgia Tech does not have extra fans who are waiting to fill those seats and pay the PSL! Supply exceeds demand for Tech football, a concept that continues to elude DRad.
Radakovich has painted the GTAA into a financial corner. Either we win every season or we lose money the following year. And even if we do win, Tech will probably do well just to barely break even!

For everyone complaining who was within driving distance of the stadium and that did not attend, please shut up. I drive 100 miles round trip to watch the Jackets no matter what. If you cannot come out and support your team in person you have no right to post anything or have any opinion. You could have gotten in for $12 and seen for yourselves that Nesbitt was dressed but was only going to play if Booker and Dykes were injured.
If you question how much difference the QB makes in this system please see Auburn/Michigan and their attempt to run the spread with immobile QB’s. It doesn’t work and they have as many wins as us combined. This is what happened today trying to insert a QB who doesn’t fit the system. We are fortunate to have 2 QB’s that can run this system in year 1 so we are already ahead of the curve. We won, we will be fine when we are healthy and please shut up if you have yet to come to Bobby Dodd Stadium this year.

I was at the game. It appeared as no blocking, and a slow QB in running the option. CPJ should put a shotgun in for situations, when the option isn’t working. I understand why more large teams don’t schedule GW. Their Coach out coached us. CPJ probably will use these films in the future, if we have more games like this. It’s amazing how the blogs can switch so much after one game. Before the game it was going to be a 50-0 blowout and a noe loss season. Now, there’s all this talk about not only the season being over, but also, Tech football is gone forever (don’t know how many of these posts are really Georgia folks in disguise)
The game was awful, but it’s not the end of the world. Everybody who knows anything about college football knew that there would be ups and downs, and there will be more. It’s the nature of the beast. Lets just see what the rest brings.
We seem to have a few pretty good looking oline kids coming in and hopefully we will get a couple more verbals this year. That is probably the hardest part of this offense to perfect. The future should be brighter in this area.
As far as having to play with a third string qb, UNC did (with a dback as their starting running back) and beat a much improved ND. Granted, the offensive changes were not as great under Davis, but the point is that it can be done.
Lets remain loyal and support the team. They will have more good games in them this season.

I would not concern myself with Georgia Tech’s financial situation. They have more than enough money to keep the lights on for now and the forseeable future. Like most State institutions all they have to do is tap the tax stream to offset any losses. Yes Bulldawg fans you guys help the Jackets with your tax dollars. Many influential alumni are also more than capable of writing a check for any shortfalls. So worry about your own house.
Why do you think Chan walked out the door with $4M and Tech did not have to sell any buildings?
As for the game yesterday, I was there it was ugly but as Al Davis so eloquently said, “Just win Baby”. No one will care about this at the end of the year. It’s not like it cost us a National Championship like Georgia’s loss to Alabama cost them.
One thing Coach Johnson needs to do is pull the redshirt off of Tevin Washington and get him ready to play. He might want to convert Reese or Burnett to a QB as well to serve in an emergency situation. The Booker experiment did not work, so I would put him back to being moral officer and cheerleading on the sidelines.
5 and 1 beats 4-2 and that is the bottom line.
Go Jackets!

It didn’t take long for the Dawgs to get back on the Tech blog. Their delusion as the top team in the country was exposed by Alabama in the BLACK OUT/BLOW OUT and they think that our game against GW was an embarassment. Anyone criticizing PJ or the system after this game or the previous five is either ignorant or a UGA fan posing as Tech fan. None of us have even begun to see the fullness of this offense and we are still winning. You need to get a life for criticizing the coach and the system, both are proven winners and class acts. In five years we will look back at this season as remarkable considering the talent and players that PJ worked with. I only see one starting OL that really fits this system, and we are still winning. This is only going to get much better. Embarrassing yesterday, YES! But don’t be so dramatic, some of you sound like girls. Tech is RISING, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Most voters don’t bother looking at boxscores, they just look at W-L. GT should gain a few more votes considering the others ahead of them lost, but not quite enough votes to crack the top 25. P.S. I take some good points from this game. First we won’t hear constant blogs about playing Booker more. Tech Won, and that’s counts on the record. Paul Johnson understands that he has to have the right players to run his offense. The offensive line realizes that they have to step their game up to win any more games. People will won’t be upset when the team doesn’t win 10 games. Johnson has impressed a lot of recruits that his style of offense can win in the ACC.

The wind was blowing, our athletes had to study for tests, we don’t have enough gas money to attend the game so the attendence was low, we had two QBs hurt, our wreck was low on oil. Give me a break! It was GARDNER-WEBB! This ranks up there with the FURMAN and DUKE losses and 51-7! What a great coach!

You Techsters eked out a win against Gardner. Fortunately, Webb couldn’t make the trip. And, oh, you didn’t get ranked—again. I wonder why.

If didn’t see the game but don’t have to. If the offensive line was as poor as others are describing, why didn’t PJ just bench them or certainly they need to be benched Clemson. You bet, this is quite disburbing against a team that Tech should have beaten by 3 TD’s with its 3rd team. I thought PJ was exactly the type of coach who could avoid an emotional meltdown when playing a sure win game. The hallmark of the Gailey era was losing when you are supposed to win and playing well when you are the underdog. Good teams handle this situation. You can bet playing Clemson will be dangerous. Clemson has terrific talent and is ready to release their anger. I wish they had won against WF.

It’s very disheartening to see that Tech is still infected with the inconsistency virus. I suppose a little solace can be found in the fact that LA-Monroe beat Alabama last year. That’s very little solace however. Gardner-Webb is a desirable homecoming opponent for most ranked FCS schools.

Okay, we played the 3rd and 4th string quarterback…It is was a ugly win, but a win. We had our starting offensvie line, and everyone else. The only difference was at the quarterback spot. Ga Tech an not afford to take any game lightly, this is rebuilding and yesterday was backwards. I am glad we won, but here is a lesson learned for all our tech fans. It takes 11, not 1…so it does not matter if it was our number 1 or number 3 or 4 or 2 playing at leading the offense. This was a let down to all Ga Tech tech fans, I think the offense needs to apolgozie for the performance and teh defense, even though they step up many times, they gave up over 200 yards to a team that should not have gotten over 100. I love Ga Tech, a fan for 47 years and I will always love them. I like giving my UGA fans a hard time as well, I will take yesterdays win as bad as when the Citidal came calling many years ago and beat Tech at home. So, lets move forward and hope this was a big learning tool for Ga Tech, go out next week and show you are capable of beating anyone out there. Go Tech! I still love the YellowJackets.

GT2002: Thanks. I couldn’t have been said better. I see this offense (or similar) piling up yards and points for many teams. I do like the shotgun but it is still very predictable unless the offense just overpowers the defense. PJ’s system is based on speed, timing, and great open-field (not in the trenches) blocking. Stephen Treet’s great surprise after leaving Tech to go to Michigan is that he encountered the same thing he was running from.

Remember everybody JAYBO SHAW is what we need. Nesbitt directed an offense to 15 points a game and the o-line looked bad also. Jaybo at the controls made the offense effective and 40+ points. The other QB’s need to ride the pine.

Great win Jackettes! And you’ll probably get another one this year—-if you can upset Virginia. And those loyal fans who are holding tickets in the Tech Deck at Sanford Stadium for the last Saturday in Novemeber should go ahead and unload them now….because we know you won’t have the nerve to make the trip to Athens and the value will go down with each of your next five losses. But look on the bright side….you won’t have to travel to Boise this Decemeber—-or any other bowl

Good Lord, please tell me that Goldwreck who posted at 10:16AM and G&W at 10:24AM are butt sniffers too gutless to say so.
Go back in time to mid August, and think about how happy you would have been if someone had told you Tech would be 5-1 after six games. And that the only loss would include a questionable call at VT that kept a drive alive and GT lost by a field goal in the final minutes.
Geez guys. It’s GT football. Keep typing the negative after a win, and Johnson will get the message. He’ll end up with an orange shirt on next fall in Knoxville, Auburn or Clemson. All of them could and would pay more than GT. And they’re all probably looking for coaches right now, while you’re busy typing negative crap after a win. Yeah, it feels like a loss, but it wasn’t, so shut up!!
You think Johnson doesn’t look in to the West stands at every home game and see the empty seats between the 40 yard lines on the lower level? Keep it up, you guys that are unhappy at 5-1 just may get your wish and run him out of here. Then what?
Maybe you’ll end up with Petrino!!
If you don’t have anything positive to say, go cut your grass or something.

Good grief. The comments on this blog make me sick. Last week, the comments were 99% in favor of Tech being in the top 25 and favored against everyone left on the schedule. This week, the sky is falling and CPJ is no better than the hated and satanic (according to our fans) Chan Gailey. You know what? We are no better than the UGA folks who crowned the Dawgs national champs. What a shame.

I must say most of you fans on this blog today make me sick!!!I am a new Tech fan because I played for CPJ at Ga. Southern in the 80’s. I am not used to this disloyalty. GT2002, Wreckmaniac you guys make the most sense.Keep it up. Did they play bad? Hell Yes. Does that mean CPJ sucks and the seasons down the drain? You are an Idiot if you think that. I can promise you, in fact, I would bet alot of money on it that CPJ will have those boys ready for Clemson. He’s f’ing p** and wont put up with that kind of play. He is the kind of coach that will bench a player even if he is a senior if his play is consistently bad. This is not a trend for CPJ’s teams. This is an anomaly. Even though he dont look it, he is cut from the Erk Russell mode where he wont put up with crap. So calm the “F” down and stick behind your coach. By the way, I am just learning too how these loser dawg fans operate by going to Tech Blogs to rub it in. Get a life and worry about your own damn team. Let me guess you were picked last on the playground as a kid and this is your way of getting back. It is really hard for me to pull for another team other than the school where I played but with Giff, Coach Sewak, And CPJ at Tech now I am huge fan. At Ga. Southern I learned a big Word called L-O-Y-A-L-T-Y. Some Tech fans might want to look it up.

folks… the supposed gt fans that are dis’n the team, the program and cpj are…
either uga goats with no balls
or fans of chan which speaks for itself
calvin booker is slower than molasses. he is so slow george godsey leg brace and all could run circles around him. a slow qb does not perform well in the to. a slow qb allows 2 of the 3 options to be neutralized. gw took away 2 of our options and hedged on the third. we wont even mention that gw has one of the top run d’s in thier division.
as coach paul said… you need a strong d for those days when your o is not performing. well yesterday was one of those days.
under chan mediocre gailey we would have lost that game. then chan would have circled the wagons as he always did and made it an us against the world scenerio. god how i hated that guy.
hey…. on the bright side. years from now we can say we had the same record as uga at this point in the season.
and we didnt embarass ourselves on national tv by dressing in black, by trash talking before during and after the game.
AND we didnt have a national sportscaster report that the home team crowd at the uga bama game was the most deplorable bunch of fans he had ever witnessed. TYPICAL UGA!
hey it was a win and we kept our class intact.

I am glad to read posts from WreckhorngoesTHWUGAAAA and GHOSTDAWG and several others that it is OK to root for both teams from Georgia until they play each other. In the Olympics, competitors often compete hard and then embrace each other at the end. GT on the Dawgs blog, however, seems furious that I don’t hate the Dawgs and claimed that I am “homeless”” and “the worst kind of fan.” Good Old-Fashioned Hate was a tongue-in-cheek title, a good book, and I own a copy, but it doesn’t have to be taken literally. Hatred has led to some over-the-line behavior in the past, such as destroying the huge Buzz before a Tech-UGA game, destroying the hedges in Athens after a Tech win, Dawg players taunting Tech and dancing on the GT logo after a win, disrespecting visiting fans in Athens, etc. To my mind, mutual respect, being good hosts to visiting fans, and good sportsmanship is preferable behavior, but that’s just me.

Only to end up with the harsh reality that they’re a mediocre program, at best, just to get spanked by a WAC team in the Smurf Bowl. You don’t get more humiliating than struggling just to get a 3 point win over GW at home. Keep it up Yech, you’re a joke!!

All that matters is the Win. The QB makes this offense. How many teams with their 3rd and 4th string QB’s look good on offense? Under Gaily ,the 1st team QB looked just as bad. We beat Miss. State who beat the best team in the SEC EAST in Vandy.

Buzzfan1936 I hear what you are saying. I personally dont think you are not disloyal for thinking that way. However, that is wishful thinking if you think you can get a bunch of fans to have that mindset. So if you are trying to convince fans on either side to do that it is just not going to happen because of the passion, lack of class, hatred or whatever. In my opinion it shows sportsmanship, pride, and/or just love for football in the state.

Sting Attack,
You’re trying to convince yourself of something that you know good and well isn’t true. You should have beat GW by 40 pulling some kid out of the stands to run your offense. Johnson was being arrogant thinking he didn’t need to trouble his 1st and 2nd string QB’s against such an “unworthy” opponent like GW and nearly paid the price for it. Ha, yeah, Vandy is REALLY the best team in the East. Clearly you missed that UF/LSU game last night. And give me a break with the “well, we beat so-and-so and they lost to so-and-so who beat so-and-so” arguement. If that were true then there would be no point in playing the games or fighting the fights. You know you’re reaching when you have to play that card.

Couldn’t agree with you more, Hate shouldn’t even be in anyones vocabulary much less college sports. Don’t hate Tech or it’s fans, but you’ll have to admit sometimes these bloggs get kinda heated over people back and forth over a team. One thing we should take into consideration is the teams we pull for each week and blogg about consists of 18-21 year old kids. Whatever the outcome of a game or how well the players perform, we shouldn’t sit on a blogg and critisize them for it. None of thes kids go out every gameday to have a bad game. One thing that i don’t approve of is At Sanford Stadium the fans smetimes boo the visiting players and yesterday booed The Tennessee Band when it came off the field at halftime. Somet things never change though. Don’t get me wrong once you’ve heard Rocky Top played it don’t take long to get a belly full of it. We only had to hear it twice Yesterday thank God.

I didn’t see the game, but with all the circumstances regarding a third and fourth string quarterback, a div. 2 school in an era where the talent gap is decreasing between divisions and an ever improving, but new offensive scheme; i’m not too panicked. PJ will tighten the screws on this disciplined team. We’ll get our quarterbacks back for clemson and be completely focused on our continued march towards earning the respect of our opponents as we climb into the top 25. In time, Tech will be returned to the prominence that we’ve known in the past! Ours is a rich tradition and we’re on the way to reclaiming our spot among the elite!

UGLY is right!!! This game should put to rest any more talk of being ranked until such time the team proves it deserves to be so. I’ve always worried about games where Tech is the big favorite and this one proved no different. It seems more often than not, that when Tech is heavily favored, they never play up to their own expectations much less that of the fans. I feel more comfortable when we’re - pardon the expression, underdogs.
I wrote on this blog after the Miss. St. game that our interior O lineman were getting whipped way too much to make the belly series work consistently and that if it wasn’t addressed properly it would haunt us the rest of the year. Granted the O line, which PJ inherited from Gailey is having to learn new blocking techniques and schemes, their size differential alone should have been enough to dominate the line of scrimmage better than they did (even if Gardner-Webb did have eight in the box for most of the game).
Maybe the Team was looking ahead to Clemson? Maybe it was because they were playing a third string quarter-back that doesn’t fit the offense? Or maybe Gardner-Webb is better than anyone thought? But either way, let’s hope the team and the coaching staff will learn from this near disaster and for the rest of the season not take any team or themselves for granted and think they can just show up and win. Their good but not that good. Go Jackets!!!

Sautee Dawg, Thanks for the comments.
CPJ is a gambler as shown by his going for it on 4th down when most coaches would punt. By doing this, he demonstrates that he has confidence in his offense and in his players to make it. I think he did the same thing in the game Saturday. He let Booker know that he would start and play the whole game to give him confidence. This time, it almost didn’t work. I criticized him for not having Nesbitt or Jaybo waiting to go in if needed, but it is easy for us Monday morning QB’s to second guess the guy I hope will be a great coach for Tech. I am just praying the Nesbitt and Shaw are not seriously injured.

Good heavens…I cannot believe how quickly people can spin their hats! Shi7 happens, folks…enough said. Johnson still knows what he is doing (just like he did a week ago when all were singing his praises.)
Those who are complaining are the same type of bozos that ran off Bobby Ross. Tech men are supposed eo be a cut above such foolishness.
I will tell you this:
People at Auburn will gladly take Johnson off of our hands, right this minute! They are already talking about it, in fact. Yesterday, I thought they were dreaming…today, I am beginning to wonder.
The good news:
I remain grateful that Tech has a coach of Johnson’s caliber. He is a man who knows football and carries himself with impeccable integrity. Moreover, he is a perfect fit for the Ga Tech culture.
Coach Johnson has my unquestioned support…even if he looses the rest of the season. Of course, I am a TECH MAN…some of you must be the OTHER GUY!

The great thing is we get to live to play another day, no one has seen any film of what we plan to do to Clemson and we are not ranked and having to live with that monkey on our back. We beat some pretty good teams this year but I don’t think Clemson is going to be afraid of us which is good. Clemson has one of those teams like Tech is or hopefully use to be where if a team doesn’t catch their attention they play well under their talent. The problem is their coach will be fired if he doesn’t do something and we might just be that something that keeps him there. I think we win by 14 and I also think if we look at GW our opponent may have seen a few option offenses in the 1AA over the last couple of years and understand how to defend it especially with an ill fitted quarterback running it.

I guess I was glad I was there to see what happened. I felt bad for Booker that the line didn’t give him a chance to do what he can do. He sure doesn’t run real well, bless his heart. Thank the good Lord the defence saved an ugly win. I’m shaken up bad because I didn’t except to see this under Paul Johnson. This is interesting…
In both the AP and Coaches’ polls, Tech lost votes but moved up closer to the top 25, with FSU just ahead of us (another underrated team). We did NOT turn in a top-25 performance yesterday and am not saying we should be ranked, but I am surprised that FSU isn’t getting the love either (and UNC is).
In the CBS 120, we held pat at #28. As an aside, CBS still has us penciled in for the Gator Bowl, probably because of being stymied by VT for a trip to Tampa despite having a better (projected) conference record than anyone in the ACCA. Of course, we have to win the games first and not mail in another performance like yesterday which wouldn’t beat anyone left on our sked (except maybe Miami :) ).
Obviously, we would have taken a big hit for a loss to a FCS team. Conversely, I don’t know how much we would have moved up for a “proper” win against a FCS team.
At least Auburn and Wisconsin are FINALLY not receiving ANY votes.

Tech is now #30 in both AP and USA Today Polls and #20 in the Sagarin Poll. The teams ahead of us we have to play are: Dawgs #10, UNC #18, and FSU #29 in the AP Poll; and Dawgs # 9, UNC #21, and FSU #28 in the Coaches Poll. The only team ahead of us we still have to play in the Sagarin Poll is UGA @ # 7. Miami and UVA will also be tough.
None of the polls matter much unless we beat Clemson and do well the rest of the way. If one and/or both of our top 2 QB’s are healthy, I think we will win Saturday.

no matter who the qb is we should’ve executed. that game was a chance to address issues. you can coach and teach all you want but I’m pretty sure the aroma during the week was “this is a scrimmage” we don’t deserve to be in the top 25 for that reason. as my dad always said about tech when they were winning, “they can’t stand prosperity”. all of techs sports have an air about them when winning, then we get bit in the a*. check the history.

guarantee you that we will whip those overrated pups in Athens this year by 20 points. Yes, you heard it here first. UGA is going down and it will be something like 37 - 17.
Maybe ya’ll can get Aerosmith and come sing ‘Dream On’ at your pep rally the night before the game.

Earlier, I asked if anyone saw why MJ was called for the illegal leap on the missed field goal by GW, which I understand MJ blocked, and which led to their TD. Someone said the ref later said that he misinterpreted the rule. If so, it was a bogus call that could have cost us the game. Someone else said MJ lined up more than 1 yard away and landed on other players. Does anyone know? I wasn’t there & couldn’t find an internet radio website to listen to.
Here is the Rule:
“No defensive player, in an attempt to gain an advantage, may step, jump or stand on an opponent. No defensive player who runs forward from beyond the neutral zone and leaps from beyond the neutral zone in an obvious attempt to block a field goal or try may land on any player(s). It is not a foul if the leaping player was aligned in a stationary position within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.”

Great game by Derrick Morgan, #91!! He blocked the game ending FG, and had 10 tackles, 4 for a loss, and 2.5 sacks….AND HE’LL BE BACK NEXT YEAR!!

I am with M. We are very lucky to have a great coach and before it is over saying this will be silly. He has Clemson in his slights and this weeks practice will be as focused as we have had at Tech in a long time. It needs to be because Bowden is best when they are showing him the door, we need to have an agenda of our own and PJ has found one. Spurrier does stuff like that.

Hello I’m Back !!!! Clemson - UM - FSU - NC & of coarse THE DAWGS will clean your clocks, so DO NOT worry about the top 25. My GOSH, there were more DAWG fans in Tempe, Arizona than were in Grant Field this past Saturday. If you want ANY respect why not try to support your team !!!

I am still so embarrassed that I dread going into work tomorrow. I just hope that Rad puts Johnson on some kind of probation and if there is another letdown next weekend like against Gardner-Webb, that we seriously organize a committee to look for another coach. This is more like a loss than a win to comprehend and is totally unacceptable. We have lost to the Citadel, Furman, Duke and now Gardner-Webb. Recruits must be laughing.

**Ken Whisenhunt^^ and his Arizona Cardinals got lucky. He called a timeout just as the Dallas Placekicker was kicking a very long field goal to freeze him. It was blocked, He made it on the 2nd try sending the game into OT. Dallas won the coin toss which means 4-1 Dallas wins. Luckily for Ken, the Cardinals held them, blocked the punt, recovered, and took it in for a TD to win! I’m happy for Ken. It takes my mind back to an earlier era when Tech used to beat the Dawgs.

Beating Gardner-Webb by 3 points is just as impressive as beating the mighty Vowels from Knoxville. How many games has Tenn. won this year and who have they beathen? The mighty SEC is now down to 2 teams. Florida and Miss. State.

And all these suddenly “concerned” anonymous GT fans. The truth of the matter is this: If we win at Clemson next week, we are ranked. We win against UVA at home and this 10-7 win looks like a blip on the radar screen. Dawgies, we’re resting up the Nez to run all over your overrated defense. Wait, I think you guys just lost another lineman while I was typing. Does Richt have these guys playing paddycake during the week or what? How bout them Mississippi State Bulldawgs? SEC, SEC, SEC! Yes, I’d hate to play Vandy, Auburn, and Tennessee! We beat MSU 38-7 and pulled our starters in the 4th. Gardner Webb might be tied for the lead in the SEC east with those pathetic teams. 5-1 d-bags, and counting. See you in November

FWIW, and it may have been mentioned, Sedric Griffin having those seizures on the sideline really effected our team mentally. I sincerely hope he makes a full recovery and is playing again soon. As for the UGAy fans on here talking smack, the Tech fans should man up and quit worrying about the high schoolers and unemployed trolling this blog and support your team this weekend. As bad as this win was, it was a win and we need to focus on Clemson. Quit making excuses for a game that happened on Saturday because it doesn’t matter anymore, the only game that matters anymore is Clemson this saturday. I guarantee there will be a huge difference with Nesbitt running the offense vs. Booker and CPJ will have this team foaming at the mouth for the Tigers.

Yeah Tech played horrible today but it was just another case of overlooking a weak opponent. I still have great faith in the Jackets and look forward to the Clemson game in death valley. But hear me out…. I only played baseball for two seasons in college a few years ago and I played for a small Christian college. We were the laughing stock of the conference going 5-35. But every team got to play in the regional tourney much like the ACC tourney in DIV-1. Being the last seat we played the 1 seat. We beat them 5-3 SHOCKING WIN especially for us. Game 2. Another upset and so on until the championship game that we lost in extra innings because of sacrifice play and a close call at the plate. My point is overlooking a weak opponent is a recipe for disaster. And trust me I played for the underdog and we only won because our opponent was planning for their next game. Tech will bounce back this was a much needed wakeup call and I for one think this group needed it. Keep up the great work CPJ. GO JACKETS! THWG

Guys, it is as simple as this. true a loss would be humiliating, but we avoided it. What is more important is that the remainder of our schedule will be GAMES THAT COUNT!!!!!! CPJ was smart not to risk nesbitt and shaw. As for the Offensive line…. I bet you that CPJ will have that corrected quick. Come on Tech fans, we are 5-1!!! No one expected that this year, so i am thankful it has been this fun so far. By the end of the season they will have no choice but to rank us! but who cares about that…win out in the ACC and beat GA is all that matters in my book. Who knows, maybe we win out and VT losses 2! CPJ will have this team back and ready for Clemson. GO JACKETS…..BUST THEIR A$$

Where are all the fake handles on all the Tech fans now ?
Huh ?
Georgia Tech is NOT RANKED.
UGA, of course is Number 9 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, Number 9 in the Harris Poll and Number 10 in the AP Poll.
Georgia Tech is not in the Top 29 of any Poll.
10-7 Gardner-Webb.
UGA is Number 15 in Total Defense and Number 23 in Total Offense. This against SoS Number 1 for UGA.
Tech is Number 53 in Total Offense because Tech is Number 111 in Passing Offense. This despite the fact that Tech’s SoS is ALSO NOT IN THE TOP 25, while UGA’s SoS is The Number 2 toughest in the nation.
In other BCS Polls, Georgia Tech is Number 29 in the Seattle Times Anderson-Hester Poll and Number 26 in the Wes Colley Unbiased Poll, and thus Georgia Tech is NOT RANKED IN THE BCS POLL.

Hey bulldawg, How far did ya’ll move up with the big Tenn win this weekend? Talk about not being respected by your peers!!! Everyone leap frogged your NC team. Bottom line, we both got one loss. Moving on, our O line has been suspect all year long, but who could get up for this team? I think a lot of you CPJ bashers are UGA fans in disguise. All true GT fans know what we have. He is pi$$ed off more than any of us, and he will address it!

As far as the Oline is concerned, lets face it, they are not our best players. I believe that Coach and his assistants are doing their best to get the most possible out of these guys, but they will never be among the best that’s out there. That is why the offense has to depend on some outstanding plays from individual stars on the team — something we did not see but once Saturday. The playmaking qbs will be back this week and, hopefully, so will the big plays. And there is help on the way for next year. BEAT CLEMSON.

The game was nerve-racking but we won. Our defense is solid and our 1st 2 QB’s are great. We seem to never get motivated for these lesser schools. Coach Paul is awesome and will have everyone motivated for Saturday’s game!!

…….BuLLdawg- still on at 5:34am huh? Did you just get off your night shift? I love reading your pathetic rants that always appear between 3-5am. Meth is a heck of a drug buddy. Be careful. Loser.
Side note, UF is going to spank the mutts this year. Its gonna make the Bama raping look like play time. Richt’s going to have to do more than “dance” this year.

I can understand why pretty much every fan is disgruntled by this win. It really is about as good as loss… except its still a win and put at 5-1 instead of 4-2. Honestly, if we had started the season poorly and hadn’t had as much success as we are at this point in the season then all of you would be saying “oh, its just Paul Johnson rebuilding the team. Give him a couple of more years and you’ll see how good we’ll be.” So we go out and have one poor performance and now all of you are abondoning everything you’ve said so far this season and saying we will not even make a bowl and PJ is no better than Chan? Really? For those of you saying this, you may truly be the worst bickering Tech fans ever. If you look at how we played against other teams, completely omitting the GW game, you wouldn’t see any reason we can’t win any the rest of our games. I wouldn’t count on going undefeated but 9-3 or 8-4 isn’t to unreasonable to ask for.

Michael Johnson is listed as Todd McShay’s #1 Pick in next year’s NFL draft on College Gameday Saturday.
Great exposure for Tech and the ACC which had the most players drafted by the NFL over the past 3 years, icluding the ‘s 1,2, & 3 picks: Matt Ryan, BC; Calvin Johnson, GT; & Mario Williams, NC State. Take that, SEC!

Ive read these comments, and it seems most of you didn’t actually go to the game. Calvin wasn’t the greatest qb of all time, but he wasn’t terrible. the near lost almost happened because of stupid penalties, bad ref calling and the o line not blocking for anything. If you actually were AT the game, you would have seen that the qb never had a chance to do anything because people weren’t blocking….. as they really haven’t been doing all season. You would’ve seen players running the wrong routes and not in the game at all. You also would have seen the ridiculous calls by the refs that really assisted in allowing gw to actually score. You would have seen Booker move the ball up the field near the goal line ready to score when Bryce D. comes in on the next play and fumbles the ball. At the end of the day, Calvin did the best he could considering he didn’t have an o-line and folks were dropping passes/running the wrong routes. If you came to the game, yea you would have been mad that we almost lost but you wouldn’t place sole blame on Calvin or Paul Johnson …it was a team half @$$ effort…. Despite this bad play, I feel GT will be hella motivated and we WILL Saturday.
