A guy who’s easy to root for

With Josh Nesbitt and Jaybo Shaw questionable for today’s game against Gardner-Webb, senior quarterback Calvin Booker should get a lot of playing time, and possibly start.

The opportunity is well-deserved.

Booker is — or was — a dropback passer completely ill-suited for CPJ’s option offense. He’s worked hard to adapt to the offense.

CPJ has remarked more than once how much he loves Booker’s attitude, and that it carries over to the rest of the team.

“The biggest thing for me is, what we’re doing here is bigger than me.” That was Booker’s comment to Ken Sugiura, and it sums up Booker’s approach.

It’s easy to root for a guy like that.

Would you like to see Booker play the whole game? Or do you want to see Nesbitt and Shaw? How about all three?

I would like to see Booker get the start and most of the snaps in the first half. But we need Nesbitt and Shaw to get some to make sure there is no rust there before heading up to Death Valley next weekend.

This a great opportunity for Calvin. I hope he gets 80% of the snaps.

I also would like to see Josh can get two - three series to shake off some rust.

Go Jackets!

Calvin starts and gets the snaps but give Jaybo and Josh if healthy enough a series or quarter a piece in the 2nd qtr or half. Play it safe but play hard, get the reps for all three so they can be healthy and ready to whoop up on a team that needs to be beaten to keep the momentum and confidence. THWG and We are behind you guys! Go Wreck!!!

Larry: Do you know if Calvin was put on scholarship by CPJ? He deserves it for his leadership and attitude.

Yes, it would be really cool to see CPJ use Calvin and pass the ball a lot today. That would really give Clemson some hesitation on how to prepare for our team. The Bay Bay show last week already had to put a question mark in their noggins.

There is no such thing as rust. Rust is corroded metal. Let Booker play and let Nesbitt have as much time as possible to get healthy. Don’t risk reinjuring the hamstring and make it a season-long problem.

Garner-Webb’s abilities and playing speed are probably less than our scout team in practice and won’t be worth the risk to get rid of “rust.”

Booker deserves a chance to start, maybe Nesbitt and Shaw can get in there for some playing time int he second half.

We have got to do something about our offensive line. If they cannot block GW, then how will they block FSU, Clemson, or you know who?

Did I miss read the headline and PJ started GT’s 3rd string team? Beginning of the 4th and its a 3 & out vs G-Webb? Is this anything but embarrassing? I am extremely nervous about this. It’s not what I expected as a warm-up for Clemson next week.

GT fan:

Our offensive line has done nothing. We cannot run the ball at all; they are in the backfield on every play. On pass plays, they have sacked Booker/Dykes about 5 times.

You really don’t want to watch or listen to this mess!!

If we win this, we are going to be very fortunate.

GW came to play. We thought we could win by showing up.

Offensive line is really a joke today. I know that having a more mobile QB would have helped, but GT has not excuse. We just did not bring it today.

That being said, if we have josh and jaybo back for Clemson we would still have a chance in my opinion.

I thought this was going to be a blow-out. I know PJ will be straight with we GT fans, but I can’t imagine what happened today. GWebb gained roughly 27 yards more than GT. GT was held to ~80 yards rushing? Had they had this game gone into overtime… I’m embarrassed for GT this week. There should be an additional column in the standings for non-losses, because GT didn’t really win IMO.

Obviously we (the fans) were misled regarding the seriousness of the injuries to Shaw and Nesbitt. What I thought I heard was that Nesbitt was back at practice and Shaw was being held out for precautionary reasons. Their condition(s) must have been much worse or Paul Johnson has a lot of explaining to do. I understand being conservative, but we played with absolute DISASTER today.

By Mike

Coach Johnson, never let this happen again, this is a joke. I dont want to hear anymore ranking talk for a while. We should absolutley kill this team, and now nesbitt will be very rusty against clemson. Coach you could have played him a little bit. THWG

Something about this really stinks. I don’t think I’m a conspiracy theorist or a raging paranoid, but someone needs to explain why we didn’t get Nesbitt and/or Shaw into this game. Had we come out smoking and running the ball well, I can understand sticking with Booker, but it was obvious very quickly that we were getting stuffed and Calvin wasn’t getting the job done. God help us if G-W would have made that FG!!!!

it doesn’t matter…got the “W”, no injuries at QB that would matter, and now it’s time to win the ACC. No one remembers this once we pounce Clemson next week.

…CPJ tested his team…a major gamble but it paid off and we go into next week fresh at QB. the rust will come off in practice given our tough D.

By STING TIME!!!

October 11, 2008 6:55 PM | Link to this

Relax people, the Jackets were favored by just 2 & 1/2 points, so they covered! (whew…..was that Chan Gailey dressed in Paul Johnson suit on Tech’s sideline).

Damn coach J - try not testing the team’s character the entire game next time!

Or was this just for Clemson’s psyche??

I-M-O … if Nesbitt plays next week, and plays the majority of snaps don’t expect big things — he’s missed a month of live action, and the offense wasn’t exactly ‘clicking’ under his tuteledge. PLUS, exactly what the D didn’t need to see - Tommy Bowden benching Harper for the much more mobile Willy Korn.

Don’t be scared to take your arses up to Clemson to root on the Jackets — I’ll be there!

Elite programs don’t let I-AA teams come within a sniff of beating them; hey Techies, at least Appalachian State was a major I-AA program when they beat Michigan. But Gardner-Webb? Seriously, Gnats, Gardner-Webb?

Hell, Charleston Southern scored 13 on ‘em.

By Navigator

It’s simple and to the point, Tech had better hope they have to depend on Booker. I think overall he was poor, maybe even horrible. They have two QB’s, and they better hope that one of them is healthy to play. Don’t tell how this 1-AA team is, they aren’t good, and Tech plainly stunk it up.

By Historian

October 11, 2008 8:27 PM | Link to this

I really hope their top two QB’s were to injured to play. Because if they could and Johnson didn’t play them, he is a horrible coach. Tech could easily have lost this game.

Before you Dawggies get too brazen with your comments, ask yourself, how good is Georgia with their 3rd and 4th QB, if they have any. This is an example of how bad any team is without their key components.

Umm., Jaybo did get into the game, and he got smacked good after a few plays and didn’t return. Both QBs must be injured enough for CPJ to not play them… we absolutely needed a TD, FG, or even another first down on those last 2 drives. No coach would be risk a GW loss at home in 1st year to test the team to the bitter end. Other than QB, this was our 1st string.

We just weren’t prepared and started to believe the (small) hype. Hope CPJ can fix that quick.

i don’t know if you real gt fans agree with most of that cra* , but any team that runs the option has a 1st and 2nd string qb out, how bad do think things are going to stink. everything will be alright next week in clemson . trust me josh will play next week. (inside info.) trust in GT.
