Clemson impressions

Thursday night was a great chance to watch Tech’s next ACC opponent: Clemson.

They say Tommy Bowden always wins the game he needs to win to avoid getting fired. Thursday’s visit to Wake Forest was supposedly another one of those do-or-die moments.

Well, it won’t be pretty around Clemson this week. The Demon Deacons won 12-7 and all but ended the Tigers’ chances of capturing the ACC’s Atlantic Division. Wake is 2-0, Clemson 1-2 in conference play.

The Tigers had negative yards of total offense well into the second quarter. They lost RB C.J. Spiller to a leg injury. They used all three of their timeouts early in the second half, leaving them with none when they needed them most.

They did play terrific red-zone defense most of the game.

But how can a team with so many offensive playmakers score 7 points? The line has a lot to do with it. Clemson has a huge line, but it’s not very effective. Only one O-lineman has started in the same spot all year. Wake Forest stuffed the run and frequently got good penetration up the middle. Did you see the sack in which Russell beat the center and the right guard?

That would seem to bode well for Vance Walker, Darryl Richard, etc.

We are bound to hear this all next week: Tech is facing a desperate team. True, the Tigers will be at home, but can they be any more desperate than they were against Wake?

There’s no question Clemson is very talented, but it seems like Tech will be catching the Tigers at a good time. You get the feeling that if the Tigers start slow the fans might vent their frustration.

Let me hear your impressions of Clemson’s performance last night.

And, do you think the Tigers’ troubles will play into Tech’s hands or not?

We should be able to move the ball well against Clemson (as well or better then Wake did). We should also be able to limit Clemson.

The Michael Johnson theory comes into play….if we play up to our potential we will not lose. Death Valley can be an intimidating place. If we can stay focused and limit the turnovers and have a killer instinct we should win.

On August 1st most people would have said Clemson was a 10-14 point favorite in this game. It will be a pick-em or GT might be favored by 2-3.

Gotta take care of business tomorrow first though. No injuries, lots of players, and a 42-0 score.

I think it will be a dog fight. We’ll be playing a team backed in a corner at their own stadium. The teams are probably pretty evenly matched. Tech has the ability to stop their run. Can Clemson pass? I don’t know, but that is the weakest part of our D.

I do know this. Getting past Clemson with a win may give the Jackets the momentum and confidence to beat everyone else on their schedule.

I agree with the assessment of Clemson in that our D-line will dominate their O-line. I do worry that now that Tommy Bowden REALLY has his back against the wall, his team is going to bail him out yet again.

I just hope they don’t go with the all-purple uniforms again. We just go all cross-eyed and forget how to play football when they wear stuff that ugly.

All games worry me because you never know when the football gods will frown on you. Especially against a talented underachieving team like Clemson. They could put it all together at any time and look out whoever they are playing. Lets hope they wait another few weeks before playing up to their talent.

Climpsen was overrated from the beginning. They had all seniors on the O-Line last year and this year they start a Soph and 2 Frosh. Same thing on their D-Line. Makes you wonder what the poll voters really look at when they set the preseason rankings (or obviously as the season rolls on - see Aubarn).

Our D-Line should dominate, more so than Wake’s did.

That being said, you know Climpsen will be fired up and will be looking for a win to salvage their season. It will be a tough game but I’m confident CPJ will have the team focused and ready to roll.

Agree with T-Bone, this is the linch-pin game in our season. Win this one and we can realistically think about the ACC title.

But first, let’s take care of Gardner-Webb. I want 30 on Gardner in the 1st half and 20 on Webb in the 2nd.

Their O looked lost last night. You kept thinking they were about to put something together, then it never materialized. If we get on them early, look for their fans to be on the Bowden attack. I would look for them to be merciless-totally! If we play like we can, this could be ugly.

All I have been hearing for weeks is how our season starts next week at Clemson. Please! They are totally awful and probably one of the worst teams in the ACC. That was brutal last night- I was cringing along with the analysts. We should beat them by no fewer then 14 points next week. I know our coach will talk them up big next week but I am not buying and we GT fans should not buy it or expect anything less then a blowut at Death Valley.

Tech plays right into Clemson’s weakness. Tough hard nose football with a great defensive line. Clemson saw a little bit of us in Wake with the running quarterbacks and swing passes, but we swing run too. Clemson stopped most of that and I think if their back had not gotten hurt would have beat Wake. This is the kind of game the old Tech with Gailey could count on losing, let see if we have progressed. The bet here is we beat them by 14.

By morgwreck243

I think Tech’s Defensive Line will be pressuring Harper and Davis all day long. I also think that Clemson will be going through the motions because they are out of the Conference race and Tommy Bowden is going to get fired. When Clemson pulls that trigger I don’t know.

I don’t know if I’m still gun shy from Gailey’s losing games like this, but Clemson still scares me. They are loaded with talent, and yes the O-Line is young and struggling, but the potential to have a big home game is there for them. I do have a feeling the BooBirds could be squawking early though if our D-line inflicts some quick damage. We have got to jump on them quickly and take everyone out of the game. But first things first, we need to take care of GW with our 3rd string QB. I know it shouldn’t be an issue, but we will have some turnovers, I just hope it’s only 1 or 2. I expect to see more passing with Booker in there, but still plenty of “Dwyer the Flyer”. And if there’s any way around it, lets not burn Wrights redshirt.

Well, we can all agree its over for Bowden at Clemson, and now start the debate of WHO will replace Bowden at Clemson.

My bet is on Jim Leavitt at South Florida.

As for UVA, my bet is on Bobby Johnson at Vandy to replace Al Groh. Groh has been there about 10 years and UVA is still struggling to even be competitive.

Overlook NO ONE. Period.

Clemson is backed into a corner and could come out swinging. If they do, we should be prepared. If they don’t, show off for the polls.

We’re 3 of 5 the last 5 trips to 75 Degrees and Sunny Valley. Don’t let it intimidate you. Although you might want to watch out for the Big, Big Haired Lady in the Big Orange overalls carrying a big ol’ purse with an economy-size can of Raid in it. She might try to spray Buzz with it, like the last time I was there (true story—you can’t make this stuff up).

I’m not worried about the QB situation—I think that both Nesbitt and Shaw could play all day tomorrow if they wanted to…I think it’s just a CPJ mind game, plus being conservative where you can.

I think Clemson should go for the purple-out. We saw how that worked for UGA. Besides, they’ll need it to hide the bruises.

Tommy Bowden is Clemson’s Chan Gailey.

BTW, as many well traveled GT fans know, Clemson’s Ag Department has that dairy farm just east of campus.

So, as a reminder, here are the driving direction to the Clemson game:

  2. Then, drive west til you step in it.

I’m as much of an ACC homer as the rest of them, but unless B. Johnson can get a big raise going to UVA, I would have to see that as a lateral move for him.

Then again, I don’t care for UVA that much. 41-38!!!!

The biggest problem I see with Clemson is that they can score from anywhere on the field. If we hold on to the ball and run our offense effectively, we should be set. If we turn the ball over a lot, we could see a lot of thunder and lightning.

I think it’s now a game we “should” win, but like someone already said: “should” wins scare me as trap games. If we beat Clemson, then I totally agree, GT is officially in the running for the division crown. Or, we could win out and possibly get an at large bid….just kidding. I’m happy with 9 wins in our “transition year.” Anything after that is gravy!

As things deteriorate at Auburn for Tommy Tubberville, I have a sneaking suspicion that his agent is whispering into Terry Don Phillips ear that Tubby would love to escape Bobby Lowder and put down roots in rural South Carolina. It would be a perfect fit: Tubby already owns lots of orange shirts Tubby has recruited Atlanta for years Tubby has hundreds of snappy come-backs to jokes about “cow colleges” and “classless rednecks”

Agreed that Clemson looked clueless last night. How much of that was Clemson and how much was Wake is yet to be seen.

Any idea whether Spiller’s injury will keep him out next week? That could be big. Our defense has shut down better offenses already this year. Take away one of their major weapons and they could really be hurt.

Regardless of how they’ve looked so far, Clemson will always play us tough. They still have a full stable of very talented athletes.

Much will depend on Clemson’s state of mind and attitude. It would help our cause tremendously if we can come out and smack them in the mouth quickly. If we come out strong and get up by a touchdown or more in the first quarter, they might well implode and start pointing fingers at each other. The crowd could start getting on the team and Bowden. Conversely, if we come out sluggish and turn the ball over and they grab an early lead, it could give them new life and energy.

I also agree with what has been said about our QB situation. If we were playing Clemson tomorrow, both Nesbitt and Shaw would be available for the whole game. My gut tells me that Johnson would love to get by without playing either one of them tomorrow. If you told him that we could win comfortably (by more than 20) with Booker at QB, I think Johnson would take it right now and laugh. Less film for future opponents (including Clemson) to watch.

As has been stated above, this was a game that a Tech fan would really fear with Chan Gailey as HC. Chan’s teams never had what it took to step on the neck of an opponent that was already down. Will PJ’s teams have the killer instinct?

By John

October 10, 2008 10:42 AM | Link to this

On paper, and at the beginning of the year, I think we all thought the Clemson game would be key. And, we should win it and there is no need to be scared. Chan is gone. We have a confident coach and a confident team - as fans, you need to get on board also. Stop worrying and be confident. I said it in week 2, we will go 11-1 and I still stick with that. I don’t care who Clemson is and what the rivalry is, we are a much, much better team. They’re not 3-3, 1-2 in the ACC for nothin! If you watched last night’s game, you realize how awful they really are. You can put lipstick on Clemson and it still will be ugly!

I agree w/ everyone who says Clemson is still extremely dangerous b/c of speedsters like Ford and Spiller (need to keep an eye on his status). Those guys always seem like they’re one missed tackle from going the distance.

And because of the overall talent, the desperation factor and homefield, Clemson probably will still be favored against Tech. I’m guessing by 3, at the most.

Larry,

If you are a believer in such things, Sagarin’s latest rankings would have Tech at about a 8 to 9 point favorite next week. That will shift after our SOS takes a hit tomorrow, but Clemson’s rating may also drop due to their loss to Wake.

Vegas odds makers don’t use computer rankings. They predict where the money will go. My sense is that you are right, the average bettor (and thus the Vegas odds makers) will believe that Clemson at home is better than Tech no matter what happens tomorrow. However, I’m looking for the Tech-Clemson line to be closer to a “pick’em” unless we seriously stumble tomorrow.

I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…..

  • If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you’re “exotic, different.”
  • Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story..

  • If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

  • Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you’re a maverick.

  • Graduate from Harvard Law School, summa cum laude, and you are unstable.

  • Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded.

  • If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.

  • If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive.

  • If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian.

  • If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.

  • If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

  • If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you’re very responsible.

  • If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America’s.

  • If you’re husband is nicknamed “First Dude”, with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

Tech has some pretty good athletes too. Watch the draft next year, Tech will be one of the top contributors, playerwise. That whole defensive line is schedule to go, this is what made you so mad with Gailey. He would poor mouthed but some of the greatest talent ever to play at Tech went by his watch with no particular results. Tech is a honey hole for talent simply because of where it is, doesn’t matter who is coaching. A minority student is going to be happier, get a better education and eat mom’s cooking several times a week coming to Tech. That is good for the program which doesn’t have a great deal of discipline problems with its players, good for the kids, and all those neighbors and family can come see them play.

An off-topic point for consideration: if GT beats Gardner-Webb tomorrow starting Calvin Booker at quarterback, that will be our 5th win in the first 6 games using 3 different starting quarterbacks - a monumental feat in my book speaking volumes about our coaching staff and players. Jack G,

Per Paul Johnson, Duke had 8 people in the box committed to stopping the run. We had one-on-one coverages all day long and they were just daring us to throw. One-on-one coverage has the potential to lead to big plays, which it did, and to short change a good coaching adjustment is way too pessimistic. Yes we were only up by 3 at the half, but the staff made adjustments to take advantage of the man coverage and it worked.

As far as Clemson goes I guess you can say they played good red zone defense, and results are all that matter, but to me it looked like Wake tried to get gimmicky down there and didn’t make the most of their opportunities. Point is, when they needed a TD with the game one the line, they got a TD and won the game. I think our offense will be able to make the necessary adjustments and score what we need to win. It may take a half, but I think this staff will get it done. Contrast that to a Gailey team who would either be ahead at the half and try to “hang on” or already be out of the game at halftime and do nothing to try and change that fact.

No one is looking ahead to Clemson but us. We don’t play the game and the players don’t look on Blogs to find out our opinion so stop fretting about looking ahead. Wake Forrest is a strong disciplined Team with talent and exceptional Defense play. That is why they shut down Clemson. Clemson backed into a corner has always spelled defeat. That is what you are to due to beat them. Jump on them earlier and often and play physical all day. This game against GW is big because it is the next opportunity we have to get better. We should treat it as such. I am not sure what games some of you have been watching. But Clemson has trouble scoring not the opposite. Against formidable opponents they can’t score. They have great athletes but the secret is out. Put pressure on Harper and he will crack. Don’t and he will pick you apart. Spiller will be out. Clemson is last in the conference in rushing. We stay in our lanes and play discipline football, TECH Wins..

I agree with Observer that we need to focus on the game tomorrow. Larry needs something interesting to write about, but let’s play well with good execution, and NO INJURIES! against Gardner-Webb first. I remember 1-AA Furman embarrassing us twice. We’ll worry about Clemson on Monday.

Wow, when I played football it was about 4 qtrs. I didn’t know you had to have all of your points scored by halftime. Peoples view on successful football play is so skewed these days. We win 27-0 and a guy that probably doesn’t even go to the games is not impressed. Note to Jack G. Not supposed to impress just win. Guess what? 3-0 for the next 7 games will equal to 11-1 won’t happen that way. Our guys can score and stop people from scoring. Can’t we just get excited about Tech Football and show up on Saturday and Get Loud. Go Jackets!!!

This just in… Bowden’s benching starter and preseason ACC player of the year Cullen Harper for redshirt freshmen and local fav Willy Korn. Apparently he’s more “mobile”. Sounds like another case of buck passing by Tommy B.

Korn’s getting the nod not for the betterment of the team but so Bowden can save his job. Job security is clearly more important than team interests to Bowden, who just last night said Harper was still his guy. Totally political move by Bowden. Clemson’s stuck with this douche for a while longer. Blame the ballless administration for not firing him.

I watched Korn play QB for 3 years at Byrnes High School and he is a much more mobile QB than Harper and has an arm just as strong. With the holes Clemson’s O’line showed last night Korn’s mobility will give us more fits than if Harper was hanging aroung in the pocket. That being said, we have already faced two mobile QB”s this year ande struggled against VT and handled Duke’s QB very well. This will be a test for the defense to maintain containment and not let Korn get loose for a long gain.

Well I dont know anything about Korn, We had trouble with Tyrod Taylor, i imagine we will see much of the same with Korn, a mobile guy but lack of experience that can help and hurt him altogether. If we play discipline not over pursue, i think we can contain him. Clemsons running game seems almost nonexistent, which i cant understand for the life of me. I was happy to see they struggled against all the misdirection from Wake last nite. Our option should give them fits. I still think the game will be close, i and wouldnt be suprised if Clemson plays their best game of the season, to be honest they are due, and thats why this game scares me… But i know we will be ready…

I was at the Duke game. I saw a first half that could have gone either way. I also saw our offensive line get pushed into the backfield several times. They stuffed the run as well as any team has this year. Their QB missed one pass that was wide open that should have been a TD. I love the way this team is playing but,as Coach says, we have a lot of work left to become the football team we could be. I expect to lose maybe two to three more games this year. I hope I am wrong, but we still have a team that is just not up to the talent we need to have in order to play with the BIG boys…. We are headed in the right direction, but the proof remains in how Coach can recruit!

I can’t wait until our BIG GAME in a few hours. Seriouly, these 1-AA schools can surprise you, so I hope CPJ has the team up and prepared. Remember what Heisman said at half-time: “You never know what these Cumberland players have up their sleeves.”

There was a Klempsun guy sitting behind us at the JAX state game. At the half, I asked him how he thought they were looking this year. He confidently predicted they were looking at an undefeated season, weak ACC, and a possible shot at the national championship. I thought at the time there’s just one thing he left out—-they have Tommy Bowden and Brad Scott and all of their excuses.

GO JACKETS! Beat GW, then wreck Klempsun!

I’m still reminded of the VT game, where their big D line was in our backfield several times almost before the ball. We have not faced a D line like that in a while. Clemson’s front line looked pretty good the other night, so I’m a little concerned about their ability to disrupt plays. I know CPJ will have a plan, but we won’t need to give them any mo. Go Jackets-

Jaybo Shaw, the true freshman qb for GT.. doesn’t even go to GT, he goes to Georgia State (cus he wasn’t smart enough to get into GT).. is that against the rules at all?

(I know all of this because my girlfriend’s mom is a teacher at flowery branch and taught Jaybo and talks to his parents)

so in my mind, GT must be cheating with all of their recruits
