Excited or bored?

Gardner-Webb plays in the Big South, and teams from that I-AA conference haven’t really scared the big boys this year.

Coastal Carolina lost 66-10 at Penn State. VMI lost 51-31 at Ohio. Charleston Southern lost 52-7 at Miami, 38-27 at Miami of Ohio.

Gardner-Webb played two I-A teams last season, losing 36-14 at Ohio and 31-15 at Mississippi State.

This year’s Runnin’ Bulldogs are 2-3, 0-1 in the Big South.

So this matchup lacks sizzle, to say the least.

(It should be noted that Tech scheduled Gardner-Webb only after Army pulled out of its contract a year ago. Tech was unable to schedule a I-A opponent because it couldn’t play the second game of a home-and-home before 2012.)

There are 24 players from Georgia on Gardner-Webb’s roster; you know they’ll be eager to make a good showing in Atlanta.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs bring a rush defense that ranks third nationally in I-AA (45.6 yards per game) and a passing offense that averages 224 yards per game.

But obviously, Tech should have its way with Gardner-Webb on Saturday.

CPJ says this week will test the maturity of his team. We’ll find out if Tech can maintain focus, keep building momentum. Not to mention stay healthy before Clemson.

But what about the fans: Can you get excited for a lesser opponent? Do you look at it as another chance to see your team grow, or a mere break between ACC games?

This is a rough week either way.

If they beat GW - the headline will be “So What ?”

If they struggle or get beat by GSW - the headline will be “HA HA HA HA”

Pretty much a no-win situation.

I think that once they get a lead - they should put Booker in the game and try to run a traditional “pro” style offense to get the receivers more practice.

As long as the game is going well - they should rest Nesbitt for the future.

Folks, I don’t believe in putting down the upcoming opposition, no matter who they are. All you do is get that team fired up and at the same time tell our players the game is already won. That gets the adrenaline going on the other team, and creates an atmosphere of our own team looking ahead.

Yes, we should win this one, but…things happen. I remember losing to W. Carolina, I believe during Curry’s reign. We never thought that would happen.

I liked the V. Dooley philosophy of saying whomever we play this week is the toughest opponent we’ll face and we will be lucky to win.

However, go Jackets!!! Play like it is an ACC game, no injuries, no turnovers, minimal penalties and use it to sharpen your skills.

I can get up for it…I love tune up games. Who doesn’t like seeing their offense put up 40 points? We’ve been lighting up some D1 defenses. Let’s see what we do for a tune up game. This is a good game to really focus on the fundamentals. Let’s all have fun and not pull a Maryland.

Jeeze - you’re acting like Gailey is your boyfriend who you secretly still love, but talk trash about all the time so that no one will know that you’re still picking up booty calls from him. If the past was so horrible… QUIT LIVING IN IT!!!!

I like to see some of the backup players get a chance to play some meaningful minutes. They get a chance to learn, show what they can do, and gain experience for future games. We will need these guys one day. This game also provides an opportunity to make some last minute adjustments or tune-ups before we hit the meat of the conference schedule. As stated previously, our passing game could still use some work. Our offensive line could also use some work, although they are much improved from the early games.

m will not shut up. He can’t seem to get over this obsession. We just have to live with it.

I hope all goes well Sat. and many of the guys get to play — that is why they are on the team, even the last one on the roster. I like the fact that Coach has been able to give so many game time, and hope it continues.

I agree with Terry. You don’t belittle you opponent, regardless of who they are. It’s not smart and it doesn’t show a whole lot of class.

I think m manages to post the same thing on every blog ever written. Wow. Personally, I think most people are past the previous coach. All you can see on the field at BDS is a good yellow jacket team and their great new coach.

Game should be easy for the jackets. I hope, but don’t expect, a good amount of people will show up to cheer them on. It seemed (maybe this is just wishful thinking) that more people were at the duke game than have been in previous years. Anybody know the numbers on that? I really think people are starting to get excited…

Too bad Army pulled out and we have to play teams like Gardner-Webb. In future scheduling we need to eliminate (if possible) cupcakes if we expect to move up in the polls and receive national recognition. Thankfully, D-Rad seems to be moving in that direction with more intersectional games against other Div. 1-A opponents. That’s only going to help our recruiting because recruits like to know that if they come to your school they will play a diversified schedule laced with some big marquee games both inside and outside the conference.

In the meantime, we can use this game as a tune-up for Clemson and the second half of the season. Yeah I agree, we need to play Josh also to get his game back. I’ve got nothing against Booker but don’t forget that he too has a strong arm and is a much better passer than he’s given credit for. PJ should take the opportunity to let him and Jaybo throw some passes to receivers other than Bey Bey to see if we have any other serious playmakers at wideout. We’re going to need them to contribute down the stretch if we expect to finish strong.

As far as Chan is concerned, I was against his hiring in the first place and couldn’t be any happier that he’s gone. But it’s time to give the bashing a rest. PJ is the present and the future and that’s where the focus needs to be. GO JACKETS!!!

M——Chan outsmarted you guys…He took away a bundle…While you keep talking about Greyhound, he is spending GTAA money in Kansas City, living the high life. He recruited all these guys who are making Johnson look good. He is an outstanding coach and individual who made the mistake of playing an overhyped athlete at QB who was really not a QB for a pro style offense. That was his only failure here at Tech. But there really wasn’t much behind the first guy at QB, if you watch #2 work for LA TECH. He didn’t recruit a QB to run his offense…..

M, i haven’t read your comments before today, but i’m sure you’re one of the ones who praised Gailey after beating Auburn both years and then Miami when they were #3. Although i believe that Chan was a terrible coach he did bring the greatest receiver that Tech has ever seen to the Flats, Calving Johnson. He never got a QB that could throw to him, but he did steal Calvin away from the Dogs. Now let’s move on to the CPJ era and focus on how great our future will be.

By WT

Yes…. Everyone here is right that Chan is the one that recruited all of these players…. along with Giff and the others that are still around…. But that is in no way the end of the argument…. Chan could NEVER coach these recruits up the way CPJ has in his FIRST season as head coach.

You are delusional to think that we would be 4-1 going into Saturday’s game with Chan Gailey at the helm. Recruiting is only the very very beginning!!!

The O seems to run smoother with Jaybo at QB - I noticed that from the 1 practice & 2 Sat. scrimmages I attended this summer. It’s gotta be his 2 years in high school in which he ran this type of O. And take note of the turnovers in the past 2 games with Shaw at QB, vs. the first 3 games …. I’m just saying.

With that said I fully believe Nesbitt, if healthy, has to play, and play A LOT on Saturday. I don’t want to see him miss a month of practice/game action running this complicated O, and then have him plugged back in as the starter vs. Clemson; a road game in a hostile environment.

PJ will not let the team look past Gardner-Webb; Tech should win it handily depending on how Nesbitt performs (if he plays).

I sure hope I’m wrong, and hate being pessimistic about the Clemson game, but I’d hate to see the Jackets fall 14-17 points down to Clemson b/c the O is sputtering under Nesbitt, giving Clemson great field position, and easy scores. Coming out of that game 6-1, with Virginia at home the following week…..nice!!

If I remember correctly, Army pulled out of their contract due to the physical nature of playing Tech. At the time I was like wow, what does that say about the academy and their cadets.

By Don't let D.B. off the hook...

October 7, 2008 12:18 PM | Link to this

That’s correct…Dave Braine-don’t let him off the hook; he’s the one who hired that joke of a head coach (his good friend) in the first place! He [Braine] is also the reason Gailey’s still being paid by Ga.Tech.

D.B. couldn’t swallow his pride and admit he made a horrible choice for a head coach, and do the right thing - fire the man. Again, Gailey was his good friend. So with his failing health, and knowing he was leaving his post, D.B. knew Gailey would be fired by the new AD and what did he do …… gave his friend a very nice ‘golden parachute’ by signing him to a new 5-year deal before that season ended. I-M-O that’s down right criminal. And let’s not forget D.B.’s “can’t expect to win 9-10 games at Tech” comment!

And for the folks who really believe Gailey is the one who recruited all these players, think again, it’s Giff Smith who is responsible.

Jaybo plays the 1st half with Dwyer @ B-back, Dykes with Cox @ B-back play the 3rd qtr., and Booker with Walls @ B-back. Get Dawyer his 100 yrds and then play cox as a B-back to get him ready to play Clemson as the dive into the line ball carrier we may need against the Tigers. I think we will need a big strong B-Back to soften up Clemson when Dwyer needs a rest.

It’s a home game and it’s not at noon. Other than that, there is not too much to be excited about. However, the lack of entertainment value doesn’t mean that it won’t benefit the team. They still have many things to work on. A tune-up game will be a good opportunity to reinforce the fundamentals (like the offensive line staying low), add a few more plays to the offense, work on special teams and give younger guys playing time. GT’s kick coverage needs to improve, as they’ll face at least two good kick returners down the stretch. I’d like to see the pass game improve also.

I am delighted with CPJ and was not sorry to see Chan go, but give credit where credit is due. The players who are doing so well now were recruited by him. He recruited Calvin Johnson, Tashard Choice, and many other fine players. He won some major victories: Miami when it was #3, nationally ranked Auburn, Va. Tech, Clemson, etc. He brought in Tenuta who was a fine defensive coach. On the negative side, he stuck too long with Reggie Bush, he couldn’t beat the Dawgs, he had let-downs after big wins, and was too conservative in play calling. Also, I felt the terrible ACC refs didn’t like him and/or Tech and cost us some big games and contributed to his losing his job. I wish him well and hope he is successful in his current coaching position.

M,

Without Chan, there would be no Paul Johnson. Things happen for a reason. Had we gotten Willingham (considering he later bombed at ND and WASH) or one of the other candidates at the time, we may be in a worse shape and already into a another bad coach. Instead, Gailey recruited well and as a result of the timing of his departure, we got the “next thing” in coaches. So relax a little and enjoy the upswing!!

I never praised him in any way for any lucky win that we got in spite of him. It was a disgrace to have Chan Gailey here for one minute. And all of you that tolerated him and defended him and that gave him credit for recruiting…you ALL suck worse than he did. m, are you insane? When will you admit that Chan was not just a good, but a GREAT coach? What other Tech coach, other than Bobby Dodd, ever took the Jackets to six straight bowl games? What other Tech coach, other than John Heisman, never had a losing season? Kind - willing to keep an inadequate player in the team’s key position throughout the young man’s college career. Circumspect - willing to kick field goals, rather than risk failing to make touchdowns. Lenient - not too hard on his individual players. Focused - realizing that beating an SEC rival will never help you win an ACC championship.

Blog on immediately, and say that you’re sorry!

I believe Saturday’s game should be one that we work on the passing game and start with Nesbitt at QB. Then go to Shaw and finish the second half with Booker. Here is my reasoning. If Nesbitt is feeling good by Saturday he will feel even better by next Saturday. So, have him run a little bit of the option and pass a lot to prevent him from running around too much. This will reward the receivers that have worked so hard in the passing game to this point and lift their spirits as we go into the second half of the season. Our offensive line will get a chance to get better at pass blocking and give players like Andrew Gardner more film for the Pros. Then let Jaybo finish the second half of the 2nd quarter through the first half of the third. He can get more game experience and provide the same pressure on GW that Nesbitt did. Then let Booker (Senior) get some serious playing time to get everyone into the game and do what he does best. Throw the ball. This will give Clemson more plays and film to look at and worry about. You now if you do that to Clemson they will lose there minds trying to prepare. Now granted all of this is granted on the notion that we drive the ball down the field and put it in the endzone. Unfortunately, we do have to put a number up Saturday to get the pollsters to notice. We need to be ranked for PR reasons. Top 25 teams are highlighted and reviewed all day Saturday. Have you noticed the limited to non existed highlights that we have gotten lately. Yes, we all need to be there on Saturday routing on the Jackets. Our guys need our support. Our Fans need wins, and GA TECH can use the money. To all of you who posted earlier about listening on the Radio, get your butts to the game. As mentioned earlier, it will be another beautiful Fall Day. So, what would be better than Cheering on the Jackets, that afternoon. Oh, bring a friend.

You have too much talent and passion that would present great blogs about today and tomorrow, instead of wasting it on the past.

TechCryBaby, Let’s not celebrate the fact that with all of the great talent we have had over the last 6 years that we are grateful for achieving mediocrity. What you saw for 6 years are teams that should have finished in the Top 15 and playing in the BCS bowl for at least 2 years and an ACC Championship. We didn’t do that so there is no need to celebrate those years. We use to hold the top spot for bowl winning percentage. Thanks to CG that is gone. So, let your passion for mediocrity be gone. Doesn’t matter Bad Boy. You are right. You’ve seen this happen in time and time again so you are absolutely right. But BAD BOY, I’m sure you’re right.

On to Nesbitt- he should play as much as possible to knock off the rust and to keep working on NOT turning the ball over. I like Booker but Nesbitt needs to play before he gets off the bus at Clemson or it could be 4 TO’s by end of first quarter w/ their defense and crowd.

I have known all along that you did not mean those unkind things that you said about me and I feel badly about having to break off our relationship once your wife found out.

You will always have a special place in my heart and I hope we can always be friends.

You were never like the other Tech fair weather fans. You always cheered. I cherish that. You are indeed a Chan-man.

I take it your a mutt. If it makes you feel better to trash GT’s offense, go for it. However, most people (even other mutts fans) would disagree with your comments.

If I was a Mutt fan, I’d be concerned about GT’s defense. I would prefer to fly under the radar but it looks like the national media is buying into GT and how good the defense is.

I was looking at the picture headline from last weekends game. To the AJC Headline guy or sports editor: IT’s WHITE and Gold, not black and gold, WHITE and gold.

Excited about the game Saturday? You bet your slide rule I am excited. I mean we may actually have a chance to beat the Bulldogs for a change. Oh wait a minute, these are the running bulldogs. Never mind, I will always be remembered fondly by all UGA fans.

Sorry so late here, but CPJ is AWESOME. I love the fact he is a straight shooter and will do things his way. I saw something tonight that basically said the special teams were not being coached very well, do tou think the ST coach is shaking? CPJ is a freakin’ helluva football coach and remember what his brother said, “if I were Georgia, I’d be worried” Case closed!!!!!!

I feel bad for the people that post comments like, “m shut up!!, you’re a doo doo head.” or, “m, Chan Gailey is gone, get over it!”

I hope you people realize he is a UGA fan trying to get under our skin and makes us look stupid.. which he did.. because some of you took the bait.

Just ignore him. He’s a nad-licker trying to get a rise out of us Tech faithful and it’s so obvious it hurts. Just let it go. He’s posted that crap since the day Gailey got fired. No fan in their right mind would resort to the absurdity that m displays on every post.

Nesbitt needs reps to be ready for Clemson. No reps against GW, means we should start Jaybo against Clemson and only bring Nesbitt in when he cant hurt us with fumbles or if Jaybo struggles. Dykes needs reps more than Booker.

CUPCAKE. That is the problem. It is a CUPCAKE.

Georgia Tech is NOT ranked whatsoever. Whaah. Whaah. Georgia is ranked in the Top 10 for the 5th of the last 6 years, and ranked in the AP Poll to end every single solitary year for 11 consecutive years and this year would be 12. Whaah. Georgia Tech is NOT ranked. Whaah.

Georgia Tech is 4-1 and Georgia is 4-1 and Whaah, Georgia Tech is NOT ranked. Whaah. Whaah.

Neither the Coaches Poll nor the AP Poll have Georgia Tech ranked anywhere even in their Top 30; Whaah.

Georgia Tech’s Strength of Schedule for the entire season, including all games played and all games scheduled this season, is No. 46. Georgia’s SoS for the entire season is No. 1.

5 SEC Teams ranked in the Top 13 teams in both the Coaches’ Poll and 5 Top 13 in the AP Poll for The SEC and the stinking ACC doesn’t even have ANY team ranked in the Top 17 of either poll.

Whaah.

Our Georgia Tech Passing Offense is Number 112 in the nation. Whaah. Our Punt Returns are Number 112 at Tech. Whaah. Our Kickoff returns are Number 112 here at Tech. Whaah.

Whaah.

We are going to spend every day not playing Dudgeons and Dragons or watching Star Trek, but logging onto the Georgia Bulldogs’ Blog whining how great Georgia Tech is and we just get no respect. Whaah.

Both us Tech fans.

Whaah.

Do not have the timidity to come over here and reply. Whaah.

Miami has a Losing Record. Whaah. Virginia has a Losing Record. Whaah. Mississippi State has a Losing Record. Whaah. Whaah. Garner-Webb has a Losing Record. Whaah.

The Georgia Tech fan base is bored.

We’ve only played 1 team, and they beat us up there in Blacksburg. Whaah.

Just Whaah.

Whaah.

We’re better than Georgia. Whaah.

We kick field goals as the clock is expiring against Duke for God’s sake. Duke. Whaah.

We Lost 6 Scholarships in Football for Academic Cheating 2007-2008 on the NCAA Major Infractions Database Probation. Whaah.

All our nerd athletes do drugs and sell drugs like Reuben Houston, Michael Hutts, and little Joey Hamilton.

Whaah.

Our Starting Cornerback for Paul Johnson is charged with RAPE and out on forty thousand dollar bond. Whaah.

Our campus is in the slums. Whaah.

Our sports venues are wonderful examples of our Georgia Tech Engineering Marvels we design and build. Whaah.

We give away a T-Shirt, 2 cokes and 2 hotdogs with free parking to every person who buys 1 ticket to our lousy games against nobodies, which is all we play before Georgia. Whaah.

Whaah. Georgia has a far better APR for our football team than does Tech in Academic Progress Rate.

Whaah. Jerrard Tarrant is charged with RAPE instead of starting at cornerback for Tech.

You sit there and talk about your stats, and not once discuss the fact that all season long, your SoS is Number 46 in the nation compared to UGA for example at SoS Number 1 in the nation.. Whaah. We have an inferiority complex at Tech. Whaah.

You only play one good team all season long, UGA. And, you know it. Whaah.

Don’t sit there and tell me you are Number 3 at this or Number 11 at that when you haven’t and won’t play anyone but us.

Gardner-Webb. Hell you are already played Jacksonville State. Now, Gardner-Webb. Whaah. We had to play Gardner-Webb. Whaah.

I’ve never seen so many CUPCAKES on ONE SCHEDULE since Auburn in their 13-0 season in 2004.

How many people in a city of 6 million, will be there to watch Gardner-Webb you paid a third of a million Tech dollars to play. 900.

Look. They did not come begging you. . You are the ones who scheduled Gardner-Webb
