3 impact players
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Beyond obvious choices like QB Jaybo Shaw, B-back Jonathan Dwyer and DE Michael Johnson, I’m picking these three Jackets to make a big impact on Saturday’s game against Duke.
DE Derrick Morgan: Michael Johnson is coming off a monster game (blocked FG, sack, 2 pass breakups, several big hits on QBs), and Duke coach David Cutcliffe just said he doesn’t think “there’s anybody that compares to him in the country.”
So we can expect Duke to double-team Johnson as much as possible. (Miss. St. often tried to block him one-on-one, and paid dearly). That will give Morgan, a sophomore who is tied for third in the ACC with three sacks, plenty of opportunities on the opposite side. Duke throws the ball 37 times per game, more than anyone Tech has faced.
A-back Greg Smith: Smith had his best game against Miss. St., running 3 times for 62 yards, including a 45-yard TD. Here’s what CPJ said about him afterward:
“He had a couple nice runs and I actually saw him stick his head in there and block a couple of guys, so that was good. Greg’s got a ton of ability. He’s got a lot of ability and we expect a lot of him.”
Sounds like if Smith continues to block well, he’ll get on the field more and get more touches.
S Morgan Burnett: He’s such a ball hawk (not to mention a sure tackler) and, as noted above, Duke is averaging 37 passes per game. Burnett has three picks this season, and he’s gotten his hands on a couple more.
Those are my choices. Who are yours, and why?

Just for a different view how about:
The offensive line, should be able to charge out and control the game.
Special Teams, a block punt, return for TD etc.
CPJ himself, we have really let down in games like this in the past 15 years not 5, bet we don’t under this coach.

Lucas Cox - 2 tds- 1 running, 1 receiving
Embry Peeples- Time for him to show what he can do
Sedric Griffin- May be the most underrated LB in tha ACC
* bonus Correy Earles- He has great potential if he gets to play after missing so much time.

1 - Lucas Cox; Besides his blocking ability, Lucas has shown that he can also catch and is an effective runner. Lucas has also been cross trained as an A and B back so I believe he may be in on the field in a lot of different formations.
2 - Rashaad Reid; I believe that Rashaad will have an opportunity to be on the field a lot this weekend and will be covering many of the intermediate passes that Duke will be trying to hit because of Tech’s pass rush.
3 - Demaryius Thomas; Demaryius has been hampered with injuries, but showed great hands against Mississippi State so with a little time to recover, and Duke trying to stop the Triple Option, I expect DT to have some one-on-one chances down field.

27.5 more hours till toe meets leather! Be there! I look for Walker and Richards to steam roll their O line. Also, look for our A-backs to take over. Go Jackets-

How about Bebe Thomas? He’s by far our best down field blocker and our strongest passing threat. He gives more effort than I could possibly ask for out of a wide reciever of his caliber that doesn’t get as many passes as he could at another school. I feel like we’re very lucky to still have him around. He may be our most underrated player in a sense he doesn’t get nearly as much credit as he deserves.

I concur BebeforHeisman. To accomodate Paul Johnson’s system the Heisman committe should create a special category for WRs that don’t catch passes. That way Tech could win a trophy that no Tech player has ever won in the history of the award.

Larry,
I’m a die hard Jackets fan, but I’ve got to say that Greg Smith is NOT A RUNNING BACK. My grandmother could have scored on that long touchdown run. He simply can’t make people miss. I’ve watched him play all year and he is clearly out of position. He is a WR and looks a little silly running the ball. I’ve got no problem with him running a reverse from time to time, but A back is not where he should be. He runs to straight up and if he can’t beat somebody to the corner he is a dead man walking.
Interested in what others have to say about this?

Larry, If CPJ say’s he’s a running back, then, by God, he’s a running back.
I expect Burnett to have at least 1 pic and Morgan to have a big game as well.

Sam,
Why are you on the Tech Blog in the first place? Obviously a Georgia fan. Why should you care what we’re doing. I could give two sh*ts what’s going on in the “Black Out” Blog.

I don’t know about impact players but the most impacted players will be the tech fans themselves. You just know that The Joke by the Coke will be so full they’ll be hanging from the rafters. When those Dukies come out of that tunnel and see all those impacted tech fans they’ll run for their lives in fear that all of those FOS fans will find relief all at once. If that doesn’t do it maybe all that overwhelming tech talent the impacted ones claim exists, the Dukies will just come to mid field and plant a white flag. Why even play this game. We all know tech is the greatest team to ever pull on a jockstrap and PJ is the greatest coach in the history of the game. I believe that because the impacted ones tell me so.

Duke is a big game b/c they are our NEXT game, moron. Every conference game is a big game, and PJ wants to keep his players focused, thus EVERY game is a big game.
You would know this was a uga blog if we were all talking about how 1 loss will have us playing better, and brought us down to earth. Or if we talked about our moral victory in the second half. That would make it a mutt blog.

I’m a FSU fan. You know, one of those teams that really is your daddy. And by the way moron. UGA knows that 1 loss in the SEC and you can still get a top 10 finish. Obviously 1 loss in the ACC can’t get Tech into the top 25. Oh well. It is what it is. Keep hoping that the inevitable doesn’t occur….AGAIN. You know that haunting number 7 that is becoming the status quo at the trade school. Oh by the way. Who’s ya daddy loser? Good luck against that leviathon Duke. Of course you were the last ACC team they beat were you not? Maybe it is a big game for you. Try to hold them under 41 this time girls.

This just in, Alabama just scores another touchdown! If Ugay played Alabama ten times, the fleabags would lose nine. Outcoached, outplayed, and outtalented. Second half moral victory? Alabama hung ten more on them because they had too. They scored whenever they wanted. So don’t come over here and say anything. You guys were suppose to be NC’s, and we were suppose to the bottom of the ACC, according to you! What happened?

SAM FSU? HAHAHA. We never lost a game to the FELONS until charlie ward and the fastbrake offense of the 90’s now we don’t get to play you every year and our record against you is almost even now. FSU sux and you know it. We don’t need to be in the top 25 until Dec. 1st. You are just like the DAWGS. you are either overrated or you underacheive you make the pick. It is going to be a great year because in the end no BOWDEN will be a Head Coach in college football next year. GO PENN STATE GO bye bye bobby and tommy. ps where is terry?

I’m thinking one of the A backs (or the combination) will have a big day. I also think Thomas is due for a couple of big plays. Larry I think picking Burnett is one of those obvious choices so I’ll say Word-Daniels, D. Richard, and Sedric Griffin. The unsung heroes will be the O-line who are getting better and better every week. On the other front, Duke won’t go for more than 60 yards on the ground and will have maybe 250 total. I see this thing being 45-12 TECH.

Enjoy getting your butts kicked by the underachieving FSU and UGA. Take solace in the fact that even though they (especially UGA) underachieve that they own you. All those top 10 finishes over the last 8 years sure does point to underachievement. Where does that leave tech? Gasping for air as you sink faster and faster toward the bottom? The way you set the bar and define achievement at tech is kind of confusing though. Blue rugs and Nut Bowls don’t look that good on your football resume. But, you are tech so what more can be expected. By the way, Fresno State owns you too. LMAO!!

You’re obviously a very bitter and envious girl ChattHills Jacket. We’re all sorry that you have to go on your compensatory tirades to cover up that big disappointment that life has been for you. I know you think sitting in your dark little cubicle cranking out CADs drawings for your UGA boss is the top of the mountain. I wish you well ChattHills and hope B.J. from Bombay doesn’t use his Tech degree to replace you. But I do think that Congress should push through a lot more H1B visas so that some more qualified engineers can replace you legend in your own mind Tech men before more of those GT shoddily engineered tiles fly off of the Space Shuttle and incinerate some astronauts.
You are a loser ChattHills Jacket. Your excuses prove it. If there is a reason that Tech can’t compete with the rest of the football world drop down to a level where you can. Your last major probation proved that the academic excuse was pure BS. How many ineligibles was it ChattHills?

Larry, the 1:20 pm post by ChattHills Jacket was way over the top and out of line. This Black female Tech student doesn’t for one second see any humor or any point in that racist, sexist blather form the punk that posted it. He demeaned every black male student at the University of Georgia or anywhere else for that matter. All black males don’t refer to women as “hoes” or “bit^hes”. ChattHills Jacket showed his racism and sexism and possibly his resentment of black males with that post. I just wish closet klansmen like ChattHills Jacket would come out from behind that keyboard with his hate. I know some black men and women for that matter that would make that punk their “hoe” or “bit^th” and make him like it. But he won’t. If he did he’d probably be hiding under a sheet and a hood. Well anyway now everyone here knows what ChattHills Jacket is about.

Guys, please just ignore the haters. They deserve no attention.
I live in Birmingham and have mostly listened to the games so far, but I continue to be amazed at how often Cooper Taylor’s name is called each game. I would definitely look for him to be one of the impact players against Duke.
