Duke on deck

Opposing coaches preparing for Tech always say the same thing: it’s really hard to prepare for this offense, especially when you see it only once a season.

Duke has one advantage over most Tech opponents. The Blue Devils played against the same scheme two weeks ago, when they beat Navy 41-31.

(In that game, the Midshipmen generated a healthy total of 357 yards, 207 rushing. Navy averaged 4.5 yards per carry.)

Coach David Cutcliffe was asked on his teleconference if that familiarity would help Duke this week.

“It helps, but they have better athletes than Navy,” he said. “The other part is they get to see [our defense] against their offense. We’ve got to tweak some things, do some things differently, so there’s a little bit of cat and mouse going on.”

Another factor is the confidence Duke has after running away from Virginia on Saturday. It was 3-3 at halftime, then the Blue Devils got four interceptions and won 31-3. Eron Riley caught his sixth TD of the season.

So Duke’s 25-game ACC losing streak is history. Duke comes to town 3-1, 1-0 in the conference. There’s no doubt the Blue Devils are much improved from last year’s 1-11 squad.

But, Tech fans, does this Duke team worry you?

Duke will put up a good fight but will struggle to run the ball against Tech’s front four. They will also have trouble dealing with GT’s speed at the skill positions. I see Tech winning about 30-17.

We’d better take them seriously. I think this week showed very clearly that teams which take underdogs too lightly can end up in a whole lot of trouble. It’s good that we are getting most of our banged up players back.

What worries me is the empty seats in the Bobby Dodd Club area. That looks terrible in person, on TV and what do our recruits think? Support the team by cheering from your seats, not the lobby.

Duke can move the ball through the air.

Tech’s pass defense has been a weak to date.

Our front 4 will have to put pressure on the QB, but they can’t afford to forget about playing the run.

Hopefully, our defensive ends will be able to pressure Duke’s QB.

We will score a lot of points. But, this new Duke team has also demonstrated the ablility to put points on the board.

Tech is clearly the better team but if we don’t take Duke seriously we will learn the same lesson that BAMA taught UGA Saturday night. Duke is good enough to beat us if we’re not focussed. Fortunately, Paul Johnson has shown no signs of having any trouble getting his teams prepared to play.

I’m hoping we can win the Game with Jaybo and give Nesbitt another week to rest. I want him healthy for the stretch run.

Yes, I’m worried.

Tech wins. But if the line is Tech by 14, take Duke and the points. This won’t be another Missy State (yes, I saw both the GT-MSU game and the LSU-MSU game). Our pass D worries me. I’m predicting a high-scoring affair, something like Tech 42 Duke 30. Duke will bog down in the red zone, where they can’t really air it out and burn our secondary, and will have to settle for a lot of FGs.

I agree that CPJ will have Tech ready to play. If there’s any hint of a letdown, CPJ will put an end to that by the end of the 1st quarter.

Duke will go bowling this year…probably Boise.

The WHITE OUT is a much better idea than a BLACK OUT…at night.

What is this, Bauder? Just wear gold and be done with it already.

Wes: UGA’s empty seats are red. Saw a lot of them after halftime. Glad I wasn’t on 316 or 78. Bama’s white-out looked impressive on TV.

Jabster, No way they hang 30 on us. Have a little confidence in your D. I say 10, with a lot of three and outs. It will be a long day for their D. We’ll put up 42, and the second and third teamers will get mop up duty, again, in the forth.

There is every reason to worry about Duke. Every reason. The boys better be prepared, because Duke is for real: they have the potential to be this year’s KU if we can’t stop them.

Also, quit hating on Chan Gailey vs CPJ. With him, as I recall, we were always good at the beginning of the season, and didn’t have our letdowns until the end of the season.

We’ll see if CPJ can finish strong (he certainly has in the past), but the season isn’t over yet.

I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t care what happens in the season, I don’t care how “tough” the ACC is, I don’t care what our record is; I care entirely about beating UGA.

To me, 1-11 with a win over UGA would be better than 12-1 with a loss. I’m not the only one who feels this way, either.

Duke struggled offensively until UVA’s best two defenders went down with injuries in the second half. In the first half Duke could not keep UVA’s DE (one of the players that got hurt) out of their backfield. MJ should have a field day with the Duke line.

Newsflash to Tech fans: Georgia Tech did not beat Georgia on Saturday. The University of Alabama beat Georgia on Saturday. You are not Alabama (understatement of the century). You are not Tennessee (in other news, the sky is blue). You are not even lowly South Carolina (now that’s pathetic). You are not any of the teams that have beaten Georgia in the past 7 years. You are NOBODY. You are Georgia Tech and you are making fools of yourselves popping off at the mouth when some other team beats Georgia. It wreaks of desperation. You have nothing to say to Georgia until you beat them yourselves. Not a single word. Every year we hear this out of you clowns after Georgia drops an SEC game. Every single year the Techies get all giddy with excitement like they have accomplished something. You have accomplished nothing. You are nothing. Good day.

David Cutcliffe is the same guy that coached at Mississippi and Tennessee. He is good but he is not that good or he would still be at Mississippi. I am very surprised Navy beat Wake this weekend, but I think everybody has Duke down as a sub par team and to see them beat Navy must have put Navy, for Wake, in the same category which mentally handicapped the Deacons. That 31 points scored at Virginia by Duke is the best thing that could have happen to Tech. It takes the monkey off Duke’s back and warns Tech a train is coming. You don’t expect to get whacked by a librarian, but after a few documented whacks you know something’s up.

To Memo, you are right we did not beat UGA Saturday night, and yes we havent beaten UGA in years.. But like John said before me, this is the DUKE vs. GT blog, this blog has nothing to do with UGA at all. Just the fact that you went out of your way to come and remind us Tech fans that we didnt play you guys this week, makes me believe two things.

1.You are very bitter about your recent loss, which is understandable.

2.You are letting us “lowly”, ‘below average football cheering” Tech fans get to you. LOL

Well I’ll bet anything that every UGA fan will be routing against us every week, as you always do, and we will do the same with UGA, we dont want you to win, EVER. I am just glad that TECH is back in action this week. I am also glad to see DUKE making ACC play more competitive. I will be more excited to see us show up on Saturday and handle our business by destroying Duke from the opening whistle. Offense and Defense should be primed and ready to go. That off week proved to be just what the doctor ordered. Duke will show up, But TECH needs to SHOW OUT. Turnovers were the story for all of the Upsets this last weekend except for the BAMA/UGA game. UGA just got spanked. TECH’s success this year will be measured by how much we grow up when games like this come around. I personally believe we will be 10-1 by November 29. But the only way to get there will be to say focus and get better every week adding +1 to the win column in the process. GO JACKETS!!! Continue to learn how to Win and Enjoy the ride.

If we get good pressure on their QB, I believe it will be something like 41-10, BUT if their QB has time to throw, it might be much closer, like 41-24..

Of course, both of these scenarios assumes a minimum of turnovers. If we turn the ball over in our territory, that will change a lot of predictions.

But I don’t believe the team will have a letdown because of our new coaching staff, and especially CPJ.

Would you prefer us to use Florida as an example? I’m sure there’s a smartaleck SEC comment in here somewhere but I’ll hold my tongue.

Also, how blackouts/whiteouts/etc. can backfire on you. Some folks were wanting to do a whiteout for the Miami game in November. Then you come over here and start talking smack-wtf? Comprende?

If there are any Tech fans talking trash on the UGA blogs, well, paybacks are hell. Don’t say you wouldn’t be over here if we got upset, because that dog won’t hunt.

You’re right—we’re not Allbarn. Heck, even Chan and Reggie were 2-0 against the Astro-Nerds—and that was when Allbarn was ostensibly good, not the team from Saturday that needed their D to bail them out against a pitiful UT team.

And, you’re right-we’re not LSU. We made sure Missy State didn’t even get in the game, unlike LSU.

I’m sure we’ll hear from you again after the Puke game, win or lose. TTFN-

No Worries until 12:15 SAT. Oct. 4th. I will see what Tech & Duke bring to the game. I think we will be well prepared and so will DUKE, but I have to think 2 picks by our DBs and 2 fumbles by our O. Duke beat the worst team in the ACC 31-3 after being tied 3-3 at half and then UVA threw a bunch of picks. UVA is putrid. We will beat Duke handily, I’d say 34-10 with the Duke TD coming late against the 3-4th stringers.

To Memo - Bama beat the hell out of UGA, it also beat the hell out of Clemson, in fact, the first half scores of both games were 31-0 and 23-3. I’d say UGA is no better than Clemson. So expect a few more losses before your year is over.

But you know what, who really cares. Let’s cheer on our teams and hope for the best while we enjoy the diversion that is college football.

In case you haven’t noticed, we are in the midst of the worst financial crisis since the great depression, we have a hard time finding gas to be able to drive to work, we have the most worldwide despised president in our history who has spent the last 8 years running the country into the ground spending trillions on a war to liberate/democratize a country that could care less, we have a democratic presidential candidate that is as far left as any in history and the oldest republican candidate in history with a VP candidate that is as far right as the dem is left and who would be happy to watch the world in chaos saying “its’ Gods will”.

Sorry, been watching the news the last hour and …I think we are f#@Ked.

Just some interesting info. thought saw online at end of the weekend. Tech is #25 in total defense not too far off Tenuta’s defenses. Tech is #63 against the run but that is misleading with less than 150 per game. Tech is #14 against the pass, a big improvement and no doubt due to the rush and cover skills. Tech is #17 in scoring defense. Now on offense another big improvement is total offense was #42 and rush offense was #5. Pass offense is way down below 100 I believe but that is probably due to not having to throw the ball much. I did’nt see where Duke was but obviously Cuttliffe can coach and has proved it at UT and Ole Miss and Tech almost showed some interest as well.

You know I don’t hate Georgia; I had a daughter and wife that graduated from there. I do think I am an unbiased observer of something that really doesn’t affect me. Every year Georgia falls short of what universally is forecasted as their potential. Bulldog has become a product based more on marketing and spinning than reality. It doesn’t matter what Tech is doing, we have our own separate conference and outside a nonconference contest that really doesn’t matter much any more, we don’t cross paths. So you filtering your disappointment into our blog makes no sense to me. We have never over estimated your team and have tried very hard to get you to look at the reality. I do sense a contribution to your unrealistic expectations and yearly depressions, in the fact that we have allowed you to beat us for quite a long time. We do give subtle hints of your normality by keeping our losses to you close during an era of underachieving for us but as has been made quite plain to us subtle hints are not well received by your bunch. No it takes a nuclear bomb blast like the Alabama loss to open your eyes, and more important the eyes of the local press that measures everything by you as a standard. I think Alabama learned it didn’t’ take much change to beat you, because the “you” in print was not the real you. It just took a coach that could explain that to his players and the players to believe him. That is where we had our problem for the last seven years not unlike Alabama; we had a coach who was pretty smart I guess but a poor communicator and even a worse leader. Now we have a coach that loves coaching football and does it well. This will be good for you dawgs, because if you beat us now it might mean you are making some progress to what your real goal is ,a national championship, instead of big hat and no cattle.

Even though I think CPJ will generally prevent melt downs, unlike his predecessor, I’m glad Duke won last week. Playing a 3-1 team definitely helps your focus.

The key to the game: pass rush. A good pass rush doesn’t just get sacks, but forces interceptions too. A pass happy team whose QB has green all over his jersey will generally falter (see Kurt Warner and Tom Brady in Super Bowls). If we can put Duke on the ground and move the line of scrimmage, this should be a fun game to watch for us. If we don’t turn the ball over, should be even better.

Generally, I’d say each TO negates about 100 yards of offense. If we’re 4-0 in the TO department, it doesn’t matter if they pass for 400 yards (see MSU game). That’s why pressure is even more key in this game.

Yeah, I was cheering for the Dawgs too b/c they do rep the state I love. So calm your horses and get back on em’. You still have a season to play and could get back into the NC picture. Do your jobs and quit worrying about what we little GT fans have to say UNLESS you are worried that us little pathetic GT folks will put an -ss whooping on your “black out” day in Athens in November.

Back to Duke game. Their QB is mobile, so look for a similar style offense that VT set up against us. We still halted them to 10 pts. (we have them 7 by fumbling inside the 10). Duke hasn’t really played anyone of caliber yet and GT in Atlanta should take care of business. But if they roll that QB out and throw the shorts underneath or to the sideline, it could be a long day on defense.

We had better not underestimate Duke. I don’t think we will.

I know Coach Johnson won’t.

Coach Cutcliffe has got them believing in themselves and Coach Roof had some players in there (as Coach Gailey left some players in the cupboard for Coach Johnson).

We’ll be the best they’ve seen all year…if we play our best, that is… and we better come to play ‘cause they will.

It seems a bit fashionable to question our pass defense and our secondary on the basis of the Miss St. game.

Let’s not forget the pass D was fairly stout against BC and VT and the DBs seemed to cover up well.

There may have been a scheme issue in the Miss St. game. I’m sure Coach Wommack will/has worked to get that corrected. I expect us to play sound pass D. I expect us to get a good push up front, which will help the secondary.

I think a 14 point line is NEVER a good thing (as a favorite) for any GT team.

I’ll be happy with a win, however it occurs.

I think we’ll have to earn it on Saturday, just like every week.

Protect the ball, and Ga.Tech blows out Duke … 40+ to 17 or less!

Yes, Duke has played against this offense this season (41-31 win over Navy). With Duke returning a fumble for a TD. Navy put 31 on the board, and we know Tech has far superior athletes & speed than Navy - not good for Duke. Hmmm, just as Duke’s coach said … Tech coaches get to see where Duke’s weaknesses are vs. this O (Navy had a 68-yard TD pass, and a 73-yard TD run vs. Duke). Navy threw 10 times, completing 8, for 150 yards, and had 357 total yards. As well, Tech’s D is MUCH stouter than Navy’s.

So, if Tech protects the ball, Duke stands no chance!

And to the idiot “MEMO to Tech Fans” poster …

Yeah, GA fans never go onto the Tech blogs to rub-it-in when Tech loses. Below is a GA blogger after Tech lost to Va.Tech … and his astute insight/prediction for their [Ga.Tech] upcoming game vs. Miss St.

The bees’ silly offense won’t even score against State next week. Better hope for a defensive score or two if you hope to escape with a win over the SEC doormat. Best of luck though. heh.

Nesbitt and backup Jaybo Shaw have thrown 43 passes in four games. Perhaps another 20 plays were called passes that ended in sacks or scrambles.

Am I interpreting this correctly? 1/3 of our designed passing plays blow up before they get started or end in sacks?

GTthwg,

No, you are not interpreting this correctly. Just because the play leads to a scramble does not mean that the play has “blown up”. The scramble is one of the various options on passing plays. If there is 10 yards of open field in front of the quarterback, he is going to take off. That is the beauty of the option passes, roll-outs, and bootlegs. If you give us space by biting on a fake or if you send too many defenders down field to play the pass, then we run the ball. If the receivers are left open, then we pass down field or dump the ball off to a back.

Hey buzzkey, we lost the ACC championship in 06, because Gailey was a terrible coach. For Gods sake man, he had Reggie Ball starting for us for 4 years.

28-10 GT we score a TD on an average of 1 per Qt. maybe 31-10 or 24-10. We will win and #5 greg will get in the ZONE again, with J Dwyer being in the ZONE 2 times.
