Will pass defense measure up?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The off week comes at a good time for the offense, which hopes to get QB Josh Nesbitt back from his hamstring injury.
It also comes at a good time for the defense. Coordinator Dave Wommack plans to spend a lot of time this week and next working on pass coverage after the Jackets gave up 299 passing yards to Miss. St., which is not known for its aerial attack.
Pressure on the QB wasn’t the issue.
Wommack said the problem was that linebackers, safeties and corners did not get proper spacing in their zone coverages.
“It just takes one guy to get out of place a little bit here and there and expose you,” Wommack said. “We try to mix the coverages enough and maybe we were confusing our guys more than we were confusing their guys… We’re not getting our spacing right.”
Tech hasn’t faced any great throwing quarterbacks yet.
As mentioned yesterday, Duke’s Thaddeus Lewis and Clemson’s Cullen Harper are on deck in the ACC schedule.
Lewis is off to a terrific start: 63 percent completion rate, 238 passing yards per game, 5 TDs, 0 INTs. Harper has been so-so, but we saw what he can do last year.
So is this cause for concern?

Mississippi State had exceptional receivers that caught every thing thrown to them in slits over the middle. You have that monster Dixon in the backfield which opens up the slits then they catch them. The quarterback threw too high on the buttons because they took longer to set up, the defense was on top of the quarterback and a couple ended up being intercepted. We won’t see a back like Dixon until the Clemson game with Davis. Need to have this fixed by then, which is more about stopping a big bull like running back than spacing of the defensive backfield. You have to anticipate when they are running and when they are passing, and I don’t think all receivers are as good handed as Mississippi State was on Saturday.

Maybe we should stick to man coverage then, Dave. That worked pretty good for us against BC and VT. Zone coverage has killed us during the Tenuta years and it’ll be hard for us to get that right.

I don’t think it is a cause for concern, yet! We have looked great in previous games. Duke has not faced anyone with a defense like ours, yet. I know they have improved, but we’ll see how much!

TENUDA- rush with the front 4, drop Backers to 8 yrds and let MORGAN pick the ball or HIT the receivers HARD. I wish E. BARRY (U Tenn) from Fairburn had come to TECH he could be a great Safety or QB in our system but now he is great on a BAD UT team with no hope of seeing the SHIP GAME in the next 5 years.

Not yet, Wommack definitely has enough time to fix the holes in the secondary. That said, we’ve only faced one throwing QB up till this point (Perriloux) and he only had 136 yards and two picks. MSU threw two picks and Tyson Lee, their backup didn’t get in their until the second half when our first string and much of our second string was already out. I don’t think it’s a cause for concern unless they plan on playing the third string against Duke in the first quarter.

GT75 we did pretty good against NO-SHOW last year. T. Brown had to come in and do what #24 could not. FATT MATT ain’t all that. No team has been in his face yet but that will change this weekend with the BAMA 4+ 1 on the delay BLITZ. I will bet FATY MATTY will have 2 picks by 11:30pm saturday nite. BAMA 13 UGA 9 take the BAMA points from VEGAS.

They may have given up more yds. than desired, but they also got some picks that really helped. Improve, certainly. But they weren’t really all that bad. We shall see when Duke throws it all over the field.

It seemed to me that the linebackers were geeting beat across the middle and appeared to be chasing the receiver, thus needing the defensive backs to make the stop. We need some work no doubt, but it is great to be a Tech fan with a gritty team. OH HELL YES!!

ChattHillsJacket, are you refering to the same FATT MATT that as a true freshman drove the length of the field on us as a true freshman with 2 minutes on the clock to win the game? The same FATT MATT that had no problem beating us last year by 2 TDs? Some of you are already braying like a herd of burros after 4 games. UGA has a better team this year than any we have faced in the last 7. Frankly we will have alot of matchup problems against them and that is just reality. Fans like you ChattHillsJacket always make alot of noise and then spend the rest of the year crying woulda coulda shoulda. Maybe we should hold some of the smack talk until we at least beat Clemson. Fans like you are the reason that UGA fans have so much fun fu%king with us.

Two things — other than Dixon’s long run, Tech bottled up the running game, meaning Mississippi State had to pass, and they threw a lot of short and medium range stuff. Second, when you’re down 21-0 in the second quarter, running the ball ain’t gonna cut it — unless you run a triple option offense (GSU once erased a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit in the playoffs running the triple in Sewak’s first year as HC.).

Godd@^it do you guys always have to bring up uga in some form? Give it a rest. Lets just heal during this off week, and hopefully we can be healthy for the climpson game (after convincing wins over puke and gw). You sure do like to talk about stafford gt75. Yes, some people get on here and talk like idiots, but others are just excited about gt football. Fans like you are some of the worst b/c you try and bring down excited fans. I’ve been a season ticket holder since 76 and yes I go to the games. I would be willing to wager that some of he biggest talkers on this blog don’t and probably have never attended one class at GT. As for Stafford, I have watched him play enough to know that yes, he is a very good QB with a good enough cast around him to give any team they play problems. To not see that goes beyond excitement and crosses the line to stupidity.

but a good portion of that yardage came against our 2nd and 3rd team defense… so that makes it a little better. The D was playing better in the 2nd half until they cleared the bench.

I think our 3rd and long (3rd and 12, 15, etc…) didn’t look very good Saturday. Oh wait, I forgot, Miss State has one of the best defenses in the SEC, therefore the Nation, (according to all the blowhard SEC fans after the Auburn 3-2 battle of titans)….well now days, they refer to them as the worst team in the SEC, much to the relief of UTenn. I agree with GT’s first comment above that you have to give MSU some credit. They had some athletes and some capability. The 299 yards given up passing resulting in only 7 points isn’t too bad. The concern is holding every team that throws the ball 50 times a game for nearly 300 yards to one touchdown. Yes, GT has room to improve and I would expect to see that after the off week. On another note, I think Derrick Morgan came off the field with an injury. Any word on what may have happened or how long he may be out?

I think Coach Johnson and Wommack have it under control. But one could also say that when a team is down 38 to 0 that all they’re going to do is pass, so the passing stats get inflated. The key stat is 7, which is all the points Miss State could muster with those 299 passing yards. In a tighter game, Wommack will be taking a few more chances and the pass defense will probably give up less, but with a 38-0 score, why show all your defensive cards when you can keep them out of the end zone with vanilla zone. Plus under Johnson’s coaching philosophy they are obligated to find something to complain about and refocus their team on fixing. Otherwise they start thinking about how good they are instead of practicing to beat the next opponent.

I glad to read that GT is going to work on pass coverage …
Tech is going to be playing teams with better offenses and QB’s that can pass the ball.
You have to work on the parts of your game that are questionable and you will get better.

Yes, it is a concern. I missed the game Saturday (both in person and on tv). When I heard the score and then read the blogs here that said it wasn’t even as close as the score made it look, I though we must have completely blown them away. I watched it on tv last night and I was concerned. MS moved up and down the field on us at will. They self destructed when they got near the end zone, but it was more their own doing than ours. As CPJ said, “our defense looked good when they threw the ball to us.” Now, our offense did look great and did dominate. (After the spring game, who would have thought we would be saying that the offense looked better than the defense after 3 games????) Hopefully, with the week off, we can get everything back under control. Go Jackets!

Does the fact that the Tech D only sees passing offenses when defending the scout team have any impact? I’d guess that routine practices against the Tech first team offense wouldn’t give the defense a lot of looks at pass first offenses. Just a thought.

I have faith that the coaches will get the pass defense where it needs to be. Just look at the progress Word-Daniels has made. He has been burnt once so far this year and he came down with the ball in the end zone at the same time as the receiver, so at least he was there making a play. I lost count of how many times he was burnt last year. Now if we can just find a way to avoid the ‘immaculate pass interference’ calls against us…
About Stafford. Fat Matt ain’t that fat anymore, he’s trimmed a lot of the fat off. I still don’t think he is a superstar, but I’ve seen that guy take some vicious hits and get right back up and make a big throw.

Tech’s best pass defense is ball control on offense, avoid turnovers and penalties, run up points, and keep the other team’s offense on the sidelines. It looks like that is exactly what PJ is doing. He knows the defense needs to improve and is working on it. The defense came up with big plays when they needed to. Also, much of Miss State’ s yardage and only TD came against 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers.

The big picture is the points allowed is in the category to give us a chance to win. This game was out of hand by the 4th qtr. and Miss. State had that long run of 71 yards. Matter of fact either we’re really good or Miss. State had a bad day or combo. It’s great the coach has identified a weakness and is going to work on it. The bend but don’t break and go for turnovers strategy is not a bad strategy but periodically the mindset needs to improve on every 3 downs by the other team’s offense. It would be great if we could stop the other team on three downs, don’t break and force turnovers.

You can see what CPJ brings, just in the first few games. Even in the face of turnovers and an immense learning curve, the offense is at the top of the ACC. Just imagine what we’ll do after a full season. We’ll average 40 a game.
Who cares if we give up a few passing yards? Did anyone complain the night that Jesus was borne that they had to sit in straw? No, because in the light of things it was inconsequential!

Georgia is better maybe, Tech is better for sure. Georgia was number one in the country and without losing a game has been demoted to number three. Obviously their press clippings were better than reality. Every year we listen to the carination of a national champion at Georgia and every year their season ends on a sour note. Tech plays close games against Georgia with what is documented as sorry coaching. The offensive coach Nix for most of those years is down at Miami and most people think he is overmatched, Gailey is at Kansas City and Lord knows they look awful this last weekend. PJ is a good coach. GT75 can strut you stuff all over this blog, and Tech may lose to Georgia this year, but I will tell you one thing. Georgia better be everything GT75 and this spin machine he has found himself under the control of or my Jackets and their lunch buckets will be going home with a piece of the hedges. And if not this year they don’t get anything but better so it is coming. I am just glad South Carolina didn’t get em first so we can look better than we are when we beat them. Now if we beat Southern Cal then we are pretty good, but we can beat Georgia and still lose some games on our schedule.

GT75 I don’t know what game you saw last year but we left 21 points on the field and ugag was not impressive. 1 dropped TD to start the game and 2 fumbles pushed out of the endzone were the only reason UGA was in that game period. UGA is the luckiest team I have ever seen. USC fumbles the winning TD 2 weeks ago and last year BAMA did the samething in BAMA. UGA got to play a weak bowl team and cry we were jabbed. P** ON A DAWG.

Georgia may be as good as advertised but I’m betting against it. Good chance they won’t win their division again this year.
But, if they finish “strong” all the UGA fans can claim they should play for the NC because “they are playing the best at the end of the year”.

And about the real topic of the blog, nothing to worry about too much on the pass D. We got up 21-0 and were stuffing the run so well MSU had nothing else to do but throw the ball. I would have liked to see more pressure on the QB, but not with all out blitzes like the previous regime. I think Coach knows the golden rule of football, the team that runs the ball and stops the run has the best chance of winning.

Born2Buzz I remember you wanted us to hire Chris Hatcher. I bet you feel like a doofus now. Huh? Yeah, I thought so. So your comments are ignored.
But please continue to support the team. In silence.

Wow, more smack between and among Tech fans (supposedly) than we get when the UGA folks are here. Hardly any blogs from people who don’t identify themselves as Tech folk. Seems like we’ve met the enemy and they are ???????.

It does more than just SMELL bad! I am with the Jackets win or lose, always have been. I just like to be REALISTIC. I think the time for beating up on the mutts is at hand, but I’m just not so sure that it will be this year.
Go Jackets and THWG…

You guys may have a nice team this year. Beating any SEC team is a quality win, and Tech crushed MS ST.
Amazing what a real coach can do.
‘course Chan WAS a really nice man. Ha heh- anybody want him back?

Practice update:
Quarterback Josh Nesbitt (hamstring), center Dan Voss (shoulder), A-back Greg Smith (ankle) and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas (mild concussion) did not practice Tuesday. CPJ said Smith and Thomas could be back on the field Wednesday. Thomas was held out “just to be on the safe side,” the coach said. Tech won’t practice Friday, Saturday or Sunday. When the team returns to work Monday, CPJ said he should have a better idea on the status of Nesbitt and Voss. Offensive lineman A.J. Smith (elbow) and wide receiver Correy Earls (hamstring) might be able to return next week.
DE Derrick Morgan took a helmet to his thigh during Saturday’s game. It’s just a deep bruise. He practiced Tuesday and said he’s fine.

statstically, MSU has always played Auburn very very close so I’m not convinced that their defense was all that. HAVING SAID THAT, I talked to one of the radio announcers for LSU and he said that we have a legit offense that could probably roll up the same on most of the SEC. But the problem is that the SEC will rotate 4 or 5 DB’s and LB’s at a time keeping the defenses fresh enough that by the time we are in our 6th game of the year, half the squad is beat to sh-t. But he definately said that alot of SEC fans took notice of our beat down on MSU last weekend. Congrats men! Let’s get healthy and spin off another big run.

This TEAM has one thing I have not seen since 96-97, and that is they are a TEAM. Ross made boys into men, O’Leary made boys into men, and it looks as if Johnson is making boys into men as well. “I can call my Bro an a* but you call my Bro an a* and there is going to be a fight” seems to be the attitude of this TEAM. the O keeps the D off the field as long as possible and the D gets the ball back for the O. The team motto should be “I sweat for me. I Bleed for my Teammate”

38-7 does not make we worry.
ps…was glad to see the other guy go but knowing little about Navy/Ga So, I was hesitant about an option coach…not any more…cannot predict anything on this style O. Actually, ditto the D.
sounds somewhat like a dogfight here.

Relax…most of the yardage was against second and third teamers keeping everything in front in an out-of-hand game.

Techman91, We welcome all fans to the Dodd, even a UGA grad! If they want to come root for Tech, we appreciate them! This is a new dawn in Tech football, and we need the support of a strong fan base. The way you do that is get everyone involved as possible-especially families. When children are proud to wear Tech shirts, it’s better for all of us in the long run! Now take a break from the caffiene! Go Jackets-

Been a Tech supporter since Bobby Dodd days and have seen some pretty decent teams over this time period but after Gailey era I had my doubts about the new coach, not any more, after watching the first 4 games I am convinced our future is very secure in the ACC.If VT loses we could possibly be playing for our conference championship “how many of us ” thought this was possible the first season under PJ, I sure didnt.Yes we have some tough games with NC, Miami, FSU and Clemson but we all believe they are within our ability to win “one game at a time”.Lets get behind our team & coach and stir up some emotion at BDS, after that maybe we are up to knocking off the hydrant humpers in athens too, wouldnt thta ease the pain of the last 7 years of losing to Saint Richt…go JACKETS & THWG

Our Jackets are on the road to excellence, but this is the first year back on the road. We should all be excited with the Team, the Coaches, and the buzz around it all. But can we take this road one game at a time? Forget UGA for now, forget Clemson for now. We need to get healthy again, let the coaches continue to develope the players, and focus on Duke. Yes, be ready for Duke and don’t get caught taking anyone for less than our next Challenge. That said, I am more excited about Paul Johnson and these Jackets, than I have been since right before O’Leary-Gate. It’s a great time to be Jacket!

GT,
You seem to think Georgia’s season ends every year on a sour note.Tech has lost to Georgia SEVEN YEARS IN A ROW hoss.
I think must people would call that the real sour note. For you bugs that is.
Once again, Tech wins a couple of games..and suddenly you guys think you are good.Last year you beat ND and started the same S%#T and you dropped a big egg. Continue the tradition. I will agree that you finally have a coach.

We beat MSU 38-7 with our back-up quarterback. So MSU had 299 yds passing - they got a total of 7 points!!! I’ll take our team just the way they are.

All Tech fans should enjoy the victory. A win is a win. Yes it is good to see a good coach take control of his team. Every person out their has been skeptical of the triple option offense. What I’ve seen I think it will take care of itself. I’m excited for this program. When the option is ran right you see the pontential of it. Paul Johnson is an old style coach that brings attitude when he steps on the gridiron. We still may take our lumps, but it should be a fun ride along the way. The good thing about our schedule right now is we have time to get people healthy. If need be Jaybo is good enough to get us through the next two games so Josh can heal 100% even worse case through the Duke game. Let Josh run a quarter against GW for timing purposes. I have followed GT for many, many years now and yes there is a reason for buzz in the air-As players begin to buy into his program you will see a Tech team get better every week. Case in point look at Navy after the first year! At Tech Paul will be able to recruit better Players. THWG!

TECHMAN91 You are a freakin’ clown. If I caught you talkin SH$T like that at GT game I would knock you the hell out. Turning away sidewalk fans would destroy this program financially. I would bet that almost half the fans at Bobby Dodd Stadium every Saturday are sidewalk fans. Face the facts in a 5 year period GT doesn’t even graduate enough kids to fill up our so-called cracker jack box sized stadium. GT is dependent upon sidewalk fans and turning them away by acting like a complete dick only hurts the GT athletic department.
Oh and if you have anymore smart a$$ things to say I’m at every home game in the Wachovia Parking lot just off campus. If you want to keep runnin that trap you just come see me & I will fix that right up.

First let me confess that I’ve never been a dyed in the wool Tech fan. I am excited for Tech because of PJ who was and is a great football coach. He has studied under the best, Erk Russell. Go GaSou!!! I am amazed that some fans think Tech will finish the season 11-1. Come on, you have a young team! Nearly 75% of the team are freshmen and sophmores. Sad to say but on some Saturdays they will look like a million dollars and on others they will look like high schoolers. Only because of youth and inexperience. I am excited that Tech has done well and I hope they will do great things. Don’t forget they could have won the VT game but faltered. They could again. But, as they gain experience and gain the knowledge of the offense they will put Tech on the collegiate map! Please don’t over load a great coach with you imagination, hopes, and expecatations too early. Engoy the victories when they come, but know there could be disappointments also. Just stick with PJ. He will bring GT to national prominance in the near future. Yes and an ACC championship is coming as well as national respect! His style of football is exciting! I don’t suppose anyone is b*** because Tech didn’t pass alot last Saturday. Support your coach and don’t lose faith. He is a college coach and not a pro cast off. He has shown more emotion and college spirit at Tech than I’ve seen in a long time. He will be your next Coach Dodd who was one the greatest of all.
