Sizing up the first third of the season
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The off week is a good time to take stock of what we’ve seen so far.
With Tech 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the ACC (without hosting a conference game yet), the optimism surrounding the program is justified.
OFFENSE: The option-based ground game never looked better than it did Saturday, when the Jackets ran for an astounding 438 yards. With the O-Line looking very cohesive, a host of runners took advantage.
You had to love the balance, with Jonathan Dwyer (141 yards), Greg Smith (62), Jaybo Shaw (61), Embry Peeples (56) and Roddy Jones (33) all making an impact.
Of course there was no need to throw much, and Tech attempted only nine passes. Bay-Bay did get his first TD catch. The jury is still out on whether the Jackets can pass effectively enough if they have to throw 15 to 20 times, or if they fall a couple scores behind.
DEFENSE: This unit has been solid all season. The D-Line has been as good as advertised, the linebackers have held up despite injuries, and the secondary has six picks already.
Consider that the Bulldogs had a 71-yard run. On their other 29 carries, they netted 37 yards.
Tech did yield 299 passing yards. The secondary is still pretty young, and in some cases they gave too much cushion.
The pass defense will get much stiffer tests soon from Duke and Clemson.
SPECIAL TEAMS: After an uneven start, the special teams performed well Saturday. Scott Blair is kicking with more confidence. He still needs to do a better job of pinning opponents inside the 20 on punts.
COACHING: It’s clear the players have bought into what CPJ and his staff are teaching.
How do you assess the first third of the season?

This guy can coach. Fast paced improvement by the offense and the ‘D’ is not that far behind. Told you this fall was going to be fun in the state of Ga.

It’s evident that the offense has not only bought in to the system, but starting to execute with more confidence and precision. I still say it will improve on a weekly basis. This open week does come at a good time. GT needs to get some people healed and back to 100%. Especially on defense. 3-1 and a major behind kicking Saturday has the future looking bright. As stated, special teams and pass defense still need some work. It’d be nice to stroll into Death Valley 5-1. Don’t worry about the rankings. Keep improving and that will take care of itself in the end.

I’m as enthusiastic as any Tech fan. But let’s take it one game at time. We’re very young and we have a new system. That, in and of itself, spells mistakes for a team. Nothing is a given in college football. Duke is a program with new life. And we have games coming up that will really test us, against Clemson, FSU, NC, Miami, and UGA.
Our defensive secondary concerns me. MSU threw on us pretty easily. Larry, you’re right. We have to improve our passing game, or better teams will simply load the box, play disciplined, and try to stuff the run. If they dare us to throw, we have to be able to.
But, folks … we have found us a coach!

I don’t know I have seen a turn around in a player like Jahi Word-Daniel. In the past years, he always seemed to be out of position. He couldn’t tackle, and never came down with the ball in “jump ball” situations. He has turned into a man! He is always around the ball, and his men never get yards after a catch. He save that first quarter TD Sat with his speed. He is a true leader in the secondary. I was a little disappointed in the turnout, Saturday-some empty seats around. But the crowd was really into the game. We definately improve every game-something all good teams do! Go Jackets-

There should be no doubt that the most indispensible player on our offense is Demaryus Thomas. Every single big run is going to the left side where Be-Be is knocking some corner to the ground.

I just wanted to point out that we have already won as many conference games, and as many games total, as SI said we would the entire year. Too bad they can’t be penalized for being morons who just try and sell regional magazines, rather than do their research…Jerk-offs.

BUTTS IN SEATS: Needs improvement. You folks who haven’t made it down to The Flats yet have no idea what you are missing. Forget what you know about Chan-ball. This is different. REALLY different. And TV doesn’t do it justice. Besides, on TV you have to listen to “morons”.
Wear gold and I expect to see y’all at BDS@HGF in two weeks.
And if you don’t like it loud, bring earplugs. We’ll show the Blue Devils what HELL is really like.

I love Paul Johnson. The guy won’t let up an inch. Coming off the field at half time they asked him what he thought of the 21-0 lead. The guy said both sides of the ball could do better. Chan Gailey, if given a 21-0 lead would have knelt on the ball in the second half. PJ gets after his players and it has paid dividends. You don’t lose your starting QB and center on the first possession of a game and blow out your opponent. This staff can coach em up.
Go Ramblin Wreck!!!!

Just went on Tech’s ticket website-looks like alot of the sections are filling up! That’s good! Also noticed FSU game nearly sold out-I hope that’s mostly us, but I doubt it. Buy up those last tickets, Tech fans. We need to be there!!! Go Jackets-

Grade so far: A-. Let Virginia Tech off the hook. Bad call or no bad call, can’t turn the ball over that much against anybody. And the best is yet to come. Last Saturday was just an omen for the ACC and those in BCS land.

Jackets are off to a great start - would be nice is Jackets came into the “GOOD OLE FASHION HATE” game 11-1 and Dawgs undefeated.
Wish Tech was in the SEC - imagine Auburn, Bama, Tennessee, Florida, So. Carolina, Kentucky, Vandy, coming into Atlanta.
Dawg fans would attend if they could not travel on a road game and TV start time different than Jacket kick off time.
For those that think Tech could not compete in SEC - look at the last two games they played against Auburn.
Good luck the rest of the season - unitl you hit ATHENS - Go Dawgs - GATA!!!!

PJ has so many interchangeable parts, like he plans for the worse and when it happens the dead body is cleared off the field and the clean jersey is put into the game as a replacement and no one is the wiser. Jaybo was heading to Middle Tennessee State when he got a call from PJ. This is not a lineman but the guts of your football team and he is a freshmen playing and playing well. This is what is interesting about PJ he has been doing without on the recruiting picture all his adult life and winning despite it. After Dwyer’s year this year what running back is not going to look at Tech? There are a slew of little receivers out there too that get over looked by major colleges in the southeast. In this system you don’t have to be the fastest just have good hands and be tough. When the linebackers and defensive backs are playing the run you have all the speed you need. Dozens of Georgia high schools play this type football now those tough kids can play in the state of Georgia.

Is it next Saturday, yet? I feel we need to rest Nesbitt the next three weeks. Those hamstrings can be tricky, and we definitely need him down the stretch. Besides, Dykes and Book need some reps, just in case. I forgot to mention Griffin earlier, also. He was at the bottom of a lot of piles Sat. Crap, two more weeks!

I am one of the OLD GRADS (1959), so I have followed GT football since the late 40’s. I was very critical of Tech when they hired Chan who was only MEDIOCRE through ALL of his career and sadly he proved me right. Now I must say to whoever made the decision to hire PJ that his record is just the opposite of CG and it will prove to be genius before it is all over……GO JACKETS!!!!!!

Yes things are looking up on both sides of the ball. However, there is a tough schedule ahead and really no pushovers. Miami in case anyone missed it beat Texas A & M in College Station. UNC has Butch Davis as coach and FSU, GA, Clemson, UVA etc..have great athletes. And Duke has a new proven coach at UT/Ole Miss. The great thing about this staff is one gets the feeling they know this and will to the best of their ability prepare the team each week. If for example Miami stuffs this triple option ground game for a quarter or so, this staff will throw it 50 times if it has to win a game or either rollout to throw it. The passing game is their if needed particularly mixed in with the option. It’s Fridge all over again but in a different scheme.

I said before the season that if we were 2-2 after the first 4 games I would be OK with it, but I also said we had a chance to steal one of the two road games, and precisely as I thought we took one from a BC team that was replacing a bunch of players.
But I’m much more optimistic about our chances moving forward. No way did I predict a complete humiliation of MSU.
And in the Chan era we would all be worried about a let down against Duke. This would be the classic game where Chan would not have us ready to play against an inferior opponent. I don’t see that happening, EVER, with CPJ. If he was not happy with his D at halftime after shutting out MSU, do you think he’s gonna let the boys get over confident and not be prepared to bring it all against Duke. HELL NO.
We will be 5-1 going to Climpsen and that will be a huge game for possibly top honors in the ACC. Then we kick poor UVA at homecoming and get ready for the meat of our season against FSU, UNC and Miami.
If we are 8-3 going into the game against the Doggies would you folks be happy? That would be better than I predicted at the beginning of the season, but I know CPJ would not be happy.
By GT

The trouble with the ACC is it always gets better as the year goes on, after everyone has decided they are not that good. Then when you lose to a Carolina or a State it makes you look worse that reality. Miami and FSU will be better that announced too. I think with Johnston and this offense these are lunch pale players that don’t worry about who they are playing or where, hope so.

There is always one person that wants to rain on the parade. Ramble On! if that is who you are? Don’t bring that crap to this blog. Please!!! Anyway, GT looks great. Of course more work is need. But, we are playing inspired ball and the bottom line is we are learning how to win. As a fan, seeing what we are capable of doing I am very optimistic about the remainder of our season. GT Players need to take this one week at a time and increase their focus on the main objective which is to win ball games. I still don’t understand our so called fans reserving their excitement. Even our AD D-Rad said that he was more excited today than he has been since he took the job. Only those that watch the games from home and keep our stands at less than capacity remain reserved and skeptical. Just waiting on us to lose so they can justify their impassivity. Anyway. Going into UGA at 10-1 would be great for our guys or school and future. We would be the youngest team in the ACC with a Team that went 11-1 in their transition season. Again I can get excited about this because I am a optimistic support. Get on board people and lets fill the stadium for the rest of the season. Make some noise and lets root our team to victory. Not hope them to victory.
A GSU former player said that we are only running a fraction of the playbook today. This bye week will help us refine some things and come out like gang buster against Duke. Our passing defense does need help we will need to improve by Duke. Leading ACC in Passing. Looking forward to the matchup. It is great to see the ACC getting better. But i believe stopping us will be a problem for all we face. In addition to improving offensively, we need to get that defense tighter and we will finish this season 11-1 Go Jackets!!!

A little off topic, but just heard that Larry Munson is done. As a Tech fan, I have to give credit where credit is due. Never did I pull for the Dawgs, but always enjoyed listening to Larry. His voice will be missed. He was a one of a kind broadcaster. Will miss the “get the picture” intro and the animated call that followed.
I was thinking about football broadcasting the other day and how much I miss Al Ciraldo. Brothers and sisters, listening to him was like stepping back in time. It’s always sad to see a legend walk away. Take Care Larry.

hey….. would any of you even thought that 13-1 season is possible?
before our first game, i thought that we had a great chance of being undefeated at clemson.
as it was we lost the only game i had concerns about… vpi. but for our own mistakes we would have beat vpi by 2 tds or more.
beamer knew he lucked out on that game. his shoulders slumped when the reporter asked him about the win. if we played vpi again we would beat them by 2 td’s.
would any of you have picked us to win this saturday with jaybo while josh was on the sidelines? certainly not to the tune of 38-7. i can not recall a victory of that magnitude against a d like that in quite ahwile. can any of you?
we have a great coach that is creating the best team chemistry i have EVER seen on a gt fb team. everybody is put in a position to contribute…. to succeed. we played 71 players saturday. all but the injured played.
he plays to win. there are NO wasted plays. Every play is precious to cpj. he teaches and molds with every tic of the game clock.
we will continue to improve with each game. not only have the players bought into the system but i do believe they are a bit giddy.
imagine the amount of confidence our TEAM gains when we have positive 4th down plays. when we are successful at 2 point conversions. cpj is force feeding this team CONFIDENCE in large doses.
we will know better how good we are by looking at the lsu vs ms game saturday.
i say we can be good enough to win the rest of em.
go jackets go 13-1 one at a time!

We may have a “magical Boise State” season this year but the more important thing is that the future looks bright!

I just hate that all other offenses in college football seem so boring now after watching our jackets. Has anyone seen Auburn’s offense? It spreads like 6 wide receivers out, is run out of the shotgun, and they throw like 2 yard passes into the flats every play. It is so boring it’s ridiculous. I laugh every time I think about when someone asked Coach Johnson why he doesn’t run out of the shotgun, and he said “Why would I want to have to run 6 yards just to get back to line of scrimmage?” This is guy is old school, punch you in the mouth, hard nosed football and it’s fun to watch.

Well folks I have to say I have been very happy so far. I knew CPJ was a great hire after watching him turn the Navy program around. You have to love a coach who preaches perfection, and stops at nothing to achieve it. I would love to have my seats back that I had as a kid sitting in the Upper East on the 45. Kind of hard now that I live in Colorado, and of course Qwest does not carry 360, and they NEVER show any Tech games here.
All you locals need to fill the stands and keep the team rolling on.
I second/third, or whatever, the tribute to Al and Larry. Nothing will ever beat those 2 calling the games on radio.
Anyway, get to watch my team away from home (Air Force) whoop up on Navy in 2 weeks here in the “thin air” of Colorado Springs. That reminds me, I did get to see the puppies play out here in Basketball (2006 NIT). Remember seeing all the signs around Clune Arena with “Got Oxygen?” on them. The puppies did not fair too well, losing 83-52.
Go Jackets! THWG!
