Total Domination

Tech just demolished a Miss. St. team that No. 10 Auburn barely beat.

What does that say about Tech?

This one was over early.

The Jackets received the opening kickoff and marched 79 yards for a TD, all on the ground. QB Josh Nesbitt pulled up with a hamstring injury on a 21-yard run, but the Jackets didn’t slow down at all with true freshman Jaybo Shaw.

Shaw knows when to pitch, when to keep, and he carries out his fakes with precision. He hangs in the pocket. He took a big, blindside hit on his 20-yard TD pass and still got enough on it, enabling Demaryius Thomas to come back and scoop it. After a replay confirmed the catch, it was 14-0 in the first.

Then Shaw kept it on 4th-and-3 and scooted for a 25-yard TD. It was 21-0, and that was basically the ballgame against the offensively-challenged Bulldogs.

In case there was any thought of a comeback, Jonathan Dwyer went 88 yards on Tech’s first play from scrimmage after halftime to make it 28-0.

Defensively, start with Michael Johnson. Now that was the guy we’ve been waiting to see.

All he did was block a field goal, recover a fumble, and force several bad throws with shots on QB Wesley Carroll. He later planted backup QB Tyson Lee, who never saw him. In the fourth quarter, Johnson sacked Lee on 4th-and-1 and came sprinting off the field.

Safety Morgan Burnett saved a TD by tackling Anthony Dixon after his 71-yard run in the first quarter. Then LB Sedric Griffin blew up a 3rd-and-goal run from the 1. The Bulldogs went for a chip-shot field goal, but Johnson leaped and blocked it.

The final was 38-7.

Tech is 3-1 after this thorough whipping of an SEC opponent.

What do you think lies ahead for Tech?

So, this is the best defense we will have faced up until this point?

This game shows me two things. We have ourselves another starting-caliber QB. We are getting better with the option offense every single game.

We beat the dawgs down today, hopefully it is a foreshadowing of the things to come. Although that game will be much closer, and much harder.

Well- So much for that power D from Miss St. Jaybo looked very smooth running the offense-The ACC better take notice! So much talk for those SEC fans talking up how tuff the D would be- I think crow pie is order.

RWReck? Are you stupid? I mean, honestly? You beat the bottom-feeders of the SEC. Do you really think that Tech could be 3-0 with UGA’s schedule? Do you think that you’d be 9-2 at the end of UGA’s schedule? I don’t think so. Georgia’s going to romp all over y’all.

reebok - in case you haven’t noticed, Duke is not so much of a cupcake anymore. Thier team is looking more and more dangerous each week.

RWRECK - I’m hoping for 10-1 going into the pups and then and ACC crown followed by a BCS win!

Very nice win today, fellows. Jaybo looked like a veteran, and the defensive line proved it is one of the best in the country.

Hopefully the week off will give Nesbitt’s hammy time enough to heal.

Although our Jackets are looking better and better each week, you can’t completely write off any ACC opponent as a “cup-cake”.

Go Jackets. I was hoping for a solid win—this was a massacre. I like to see the interceptions—I believe we already have more than we had all last season, or close to it, right? Look what happens when the Wreck can force turnovers instead of committing them. Outstanding on both sides of the ball. This is the team the yellow jackets ought to be—you know, I was trying to be realistic and expect an mediocre/decent season—CPJ keeps trying to prove me wrong!

Oh, and in related news: This means things currently look bad for Auburn’s offense, who only put up 3 on this team last week….

The AJC printed an article when Clemson lost to an SEC team that read something like ACC SHOULD STICK TO BASKETBALL.

Now, the question is, will the AJC sports be ‘fair and balanced’ and print SEC SHOULD STICK TO WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS?

very very nice win BUT..(there’s always a butt or an -ss i every crowd)….I did see glaring weakness in our defense. Our pass defense is horrible. Johnson even pointed it out at halftime interview. AND if you look at MSU’s offense, they rolled up a few hundred in the air. Granted, alot was in the fourth but we need to improve in that area. Otherwise, this team is very very good in terms of where they were during the Spring.

But lets not get bonkers and start talking BCS. Duke is averaging 40 pts a game and can flat out throw w/ 2 very good recievers. Not a cupcake game. Then we’re on the road in a hostile Clemson environment.

VERY NICE WIN TODAY GENTS! CELEBRATE!

I told u guys before the season about Jaybo Shaw. I was more concerned if he could take the hits, but did ok today.\ The best thing about the game was LITTLE or NO fumbles and NO turning the ball over. Just goes to show how many points the Jackets can score when they DON’T turn it over. GOOOOO JACKETS!!!

I’m a Georgia fan, but I have to say congrats to Tech for an impressive victory today. For the Yellow Jackets to win 38-7 with their backup quarterback is scary. Hate to say it, but Tech looks like a program with a bright future ahead of it under Paul Johnson.

Great win for the jackets. Hope Josh recovers with the week off. Nice to see that Jaybo can come in and relieve at QB with little or no drop-off.

I certainly like our chances to win the next two games, but some of the posts above are a little optimistic. We certainly have a great chance to compete for the divisional title, but some of the stats from this game aren’t completely encouraging:

MS State passed for 299 yards and racked up a total of 407 yards of offense. Tech will have to stiffen up against teams like Duke and UNC, much less Miami, FSU, Clemson and GA to be able to win.

Penalties: granted MS St was also bad, but Tech had 6 penalties for 69 yards which is about their average and still too high.

Best stat of the day: Zero turnovers for Tech

GT ACC GT ACC!!! Great day so far for the Home Team and the ACC. NCST over ECU. Back to life, back to Reality. (singing). I thought it interesting that there was some concern when Nesbitt went out of the game. Jaybo, has shown that he has a better handle on the reads that make this offense go over Nesbitt since camp. Don’t get me wrong, I want Nesbitt back and fast. But Jaybo has shown everyone to be careful what you wish for, because he has the Nads to hurt you with this offense. CPJ you are the Man. Thank you for bring a winning attitude back to the FLATS. GA DAWGS just stay off our blog. Your rhetoric speaks like a whisper. Everyone from this post on, share your excitement about this game and this season and completely ignore those idiots from Athens. We are going to destroy them this year. Great Game TECH and Get some serious rest and lets get stronger for the rest of the season. This game showed that you (TECH) control your destiny. Go Jackets!!! 430 Rushing Yards!!!! Yeah!!!! D. Good showing today against what was quoted as “the defense Tech would face all year”. But I’m not going to blow things out of proportion here. First things first, I hope that the Nesbitt injury is not serious. Don’t get me wrong I think Shaw did a good job of managing the game but the kid is not this star-caliber QB that some of you are building him up to be (not yet anyway).

I think today we seen some of that great play calling AGAIN today by CPJ that led to the wide open runs that Jaybo had as well Dwyer. We still have to tighten up on the pass coverage, and I still think we will eventually have to have some kind of passing game to go with our offense. That being said we’d have to tighten up on pass blocking and hope that Josh gets back by Duke because Jaybo’s arm didn’t impress me but who needs the arm when you run for over 400+ yards. I don’t expect that to happen all the time…so there’s still some work to be done but its nice being 3 - 1 and it appears this team is well ahead of schedule.

You guys beat the Mississippi State, not Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Auburn, or Tennessee. Don’t start talking about SEC sticking to Women’s Gymnastics. Clemson was talked about being a potential BCS team and Alabama whooped them. It was a nice win for Tech today, and I said at the beginning of the season that coach PJ was a great hire, but don’t compare apples and oranges, not yet. Georgia and the SEC is on another level. Good win though. Peace.

Let’s see how Mississippi State does as the season progresses, before we vote the Jackets into the Top Twenty-Five. It’s true that MSU are perennial “bottom feeders,” now, as Matt the Brave says. Beating them may not prove much.

Hard to believe those Bulldogs are so lowly in this era. I had a school friend whose dad went to MSU, and used to brag on them all the time. He had a right to. Mississippi State had recently had a run of thirteen seasons when they went 84-31-4, even with a couple of bad seasons in that stretch. They were SEC champs one year, and made three trips to the Orange Bowl, during their success run. How times change!

I grew up a Tech fan, but am currently an Auburn Student. I loved this game for Tech. It really shows the potential that they have and I hope they win every game the rest of the season. However, this game makes me really nervous that we (auburn) were only able to put up three points against a bad msu team. I guess well see what happens tonight against LSU. What’s so funny to me, is that everyone is a fortune teller. Believe me we need to tighten up our passing defense but the name of the game is score more points. So what if FSU or UGA or CLM gain a bunch of yards on us. Not a good thing but if the outcome of the game is that we have 1 point more then they we win. Every match up is different. Look at how VT is keeping UNC out of the endzone. Look at MSU’s defense against the run prior to this game. MSU and AUBURN piled up a bunch of yards last week only to have a 3-2 point total. We out gained VT last week and came up short. We have a great thing going here and I am loving it. Jaybo doesn’t need to have what Nesbitt has and Nesbitt doesn’t need to have what Jaybo has. They both just need to be great at what they do and Win.

What a game! It seemed everything went our way. I think this game is going to show some people that we are a team of great potential. Matt: Really……..with UGA’s schedule, we would’ve been 3-0, so get over yourself. Would be beat ASU? I’m not sure about that, but I think we are better than you are giving us credit for. We are really one turn over away from being 4-0. I know there are no sure things, but I do see us going to Clemson 5-1 and now I feel we will be able to hang with Clemson, if not beat them. I am not saying that we will be in a BCS bowl, but I feel we control our destiny this year. See you in Athens, hope you are a little nervous……….. THWG

To Matt the Brave:

First of all get off of our blog. Second of all, do you think we would be 3-0 with your schedule? Absolutely. We’ve beat BC and Miss State, you’ve beat South Carolina which is probably worse than both BC and Miss State. Third, you read too many preseason mags. Georgia’s schedule isn’t as tough as everyone thought it was back in July.

South Carolina-awful, they aren’t going to a bowl game this year

Arizona State- lost to UNLV last week, yes UNLV has a football team apparently who would have thought?

Auburn- All I know is they only scored 3 points on Miss State. Tech scored 38 with a second string freshman QB and it could have been closer to 60 points easily

Tenn- loses to UCLA, BYU beat UCLA 56-0, no need to say anything more about that

That leaves Florida, LSU, and Alabama. Bama is at home, and we’re still waiting to see about LSU.

YOU’RE SCHEDULE ISN’T THAT HARD, QUIT WHINING.

I say bring on the pups from Athens. The SEC isn’t anything more than a media lovefest. Kind of like Obama. Watching an SEC game is like watching two bulls lock horns, neither side can do much of anything. You suck.

Tech is among the schools I watch most and half-hearted fan because they don’t do well the last few years. Coach J is a great improvement obviously. But I don’t think we should think too much of Tech’s big win over MSU. The reason is, spread offense is somewhat 1-dimensional, if your oppenents figure out how to give your QB a hard time, you will be frustrated for the game. The problem is, SEC teams are not used to spread offense because most SEC teams are run-oriented. That’s why when most SEC teams play coach J or S Cal, they may not do well because they don’t adjust to a team of another style they rarely play against. That’s why I don’t read too much into this TECH win, rather, I think it’s the other team that are reluctant to adjust because they won’t play against you for another 10 years anyway.

It’s funny how you guys keep saying that Mississippi State racked up so many yards against us. Let me remind you that we had our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string players in for practically the entire 4th quarter. Had we had our 1st string defense and offense in, the score would have been 60 something to 0. MSU did a lot of their passing against our 3rd and 4th string defense and still couldn’t punch it in at the very end. That was a pathetic showing all around by MSU. Go Jackets!!!

This is just the beginning. Anyone who has followed Paul Johnson during his career realizes that Tech is just scratching the surface. He has a very young team and he doesn’t even have his own players yet. Plus still short of scholarships from the previous staff. Not only is Paul Johnson’s offense going to be unstoppable, but his players will be the most mentally and physically toughest team in the country. There will still be growing pains but it will get better with every game.

September 20, 2008 5:28 PM | Link to this

First, let me say it….I was wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.

I predicted gloom and doom. WRONG!

I thought this would be a real tester for our young team. WRONG!

I feared that Miss State’s defense would give us trouble and that we would turn the ball over enough to give them some cheap, easy points. Wrong!

Even the SEC clowns in the striped shirts could do nothing to help hapless MSU…though they tried. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell which conference has the worse officials. Is it okay to complain about them after a win?

OK, so we use the off week to heal up. We take care of business against Duke and G-W and head up to Clem(p)son at 5-1 for a huge game. Duke is better than usual this year, but they are still Duke and we will be at home. G-W should be a mid-term scrimmage.

Beat Clem(p)son and I’ll change my nickname!!!

Alpharetta, you need some guidance and I am here to help. First of all there is nothing on dimensional about th TECH offense. Obviously, you have been listening to the wrong people. The offense is one that is unstoppable when everyone is doing what they are supposed to due. There is the toss, triple option, playaction pass. Vertical passes. Inside threat and outside threat. GT missed reads last week that would have changed the outcome of that game tremendously. We scored on a pass play that game as well as this game. Your uncertainty is only that you have drunk the UGA Kool Aid. The only thing that will be one dimensional about the TECH offense once we start clicking on all cylinders is the amount of times we cross the goaline and watching the win column add up exponentially.

The D needs to get better. Having said that, MSU got a bunch of yards on short passes after the game was out of their reach. But one fact that cannot be ignored is that GT put 38 on a mighty SEC defense that held 10th ranked Auburn to 3 points. So if a Tech fans says the SEC is overrated, they would be correct. There were some serious SEC Kool-Aid drinkers that claimed GT would do nothing against even a low-ranked SEC team. If you want to write off GT’s victory to spare the SEC the hit to their reputation, you need to write Auburn off also. Now if a Tech fan says that ACC is better than the SEC, well they’re probably wrong…

BTW, did anybody catch all the holds that MSU got away with? And I thought ACC refs stunk. Holding is one thing, but holding a player by his facemask from behind by reaching over his shoulder, and no flags??? Guess those SEC officials were tired from looking for illegal blocks to call against GT. I also noticed Raycom didn’t replay any of those block calls.

Way to go Jackets! I usually never wish a ACC win over an SEC Team unless it’s you guys. Hope the season keeps going well for you (until you play the Dawgs)and like I say every year. GA win the SEC and GT win the ACC! Maybe one day we play each other for the NC!

By Nick

Let’s see … following some Tech fans’ backward logic about “which team is better” and “which schedule is harder” …

GT lost to Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech lost to East Carolina.

East Carolina lost to NC State.

NC State lost to South Carolina.

Ergo, South Carolina is better than Georgia Tech! And since UGA beat South Carolina, UGA is automatically the better team!

Think before you post, Tech fans. How many ACC teams are ranked in the top 10, again? Or top 15?

I love it when Tech fans get their hopes up. It makes beating them every year that much sweeter.

It must be painful to have last beat Georgia like 10 years ago…otherwise, why are all Tech posts about Georgia!! We beat a bottom feeder, look out Georgia…overrated! We beat Duke, look out over rated Georgia! In the mean time Georgia may take a couple of lumps as the run the gauntlet that is the SEC, but they’ll beat some pretty good ranked teams, and likely end up in the top 10 for I don’t know how many times in a row. And, after each win or loss, you will never hear Georgia fans mention Tech! Why is that?

By Roll on, Jackets!

438 yards rushing, 438!! And Miss. St. has a good D. VERY encouraging to see the potential of this offense … and they should only get better as the season rolls on.

I blogged back in the summer — after one of the Sat. AM scrimmages — saying Jaybo Shaw runs the offense better than Nesbitt. He [Shaw] ran it in high school. Nesbitt’s just faster with a stronger arm. Nesbitt’s injury will be a blessing in disguise, giving Jaybo many more reps running the O thus providing a SOLID backup.

5-1 going into Clemson is a pretty safe bet. If Duke scores 20-30 on Tech how many do you think Tech’s going to put up against their D. Again people, Chan Gailey is not coaching this team, they’ll be ready to play and will easily beat Duke.

And don’t be surprised to see the Jackets beat Clemson either …. their O line is weak.

To say again … 438 yards rushing against a good D — impressive!

GT GRAD 07, What does UGA stand for if you don’t mind me asking? Actually, I do have a Southern accent, but I’ve never been quite able to talk smack. Everytime I do, my girlfriend slaps me up side the head and reminds me that she speaks French and says she doesn’t understand smack. In April I will graduate from GATech with a degree in political science. I do promise that I will try to not talk anymore smack and if I hear someone using that dialect I will let them know that they should not be doing that. I hope that I have not embarrassed my alma mater too much. I would hate it if University of Georgia fans ever found out that most of the students at GaTech really aren’t that smart. There are a very few smart students at GaTech, like me, who have a responsiblity in protecting GaTech’s reputation for having smart students.

Great win guys! I’m sick and tired of hearing that the SEC’s worst team could beat any team in the ACC. I guess we put that matter to bed today.

The offense is looking better each week but I am concerned about the state of our pass defense.

Overall, it was a great win today and certainly looks like it’s going to be a better season than many of us thought.

GO JACKETS!

Truth, Jaybo might not be “star quality” in your eyes, but it was one of the best quarterback performances by a Jacket since Goose. And that’s in a freshman’s first game. I’m not saying he should start in front of Nebitt. Alls I’m saying is: The kid gets it.

Great win for Georgia Tech. UGA will certainly take notice. Can’t wait to play them this year. I think things are about to change.

I think it’s hilarious you think that Matt needed a reality check. Here’s a bigger one, Urkel: IT WAS MISSISSIPPI STATE. You have a mediocre team now, congratulations! You are still gonna get your annual wedgie in November. Can’t wait, dorks!

I’m confused. Miss State is an SEC bottom-feeder? I didn’t hear that last week when they almost beat a “top-feeder” Auburn. So which is it? Sounds like an Obama waffle to me.

Great game by the Tech offense. Michael Johnson looked impressive but the D did give up over 300 yards and lets be honest MSU should have scored at LEAST 21.

That said a W is a W no matter how you get it.

So let me get this straight zengulliver…you believe the performance Jaybo had today was better than anything lil Joe did? Don’t get wrong…I believe the kid gets it too, and like you I wouldn’t let him start in front of Nesbitt. But alls im saying is that I’m not going to blow his performance today out of proportion. It was a great play call by PJ, and good blocking that got him into the end zone on his scramble untouched. He had a guy at the other end playing receiver wearing #8 - Thomas come back and make a great play on an under thrown ball…granted he was getting hit. There was also the dump off pass to Dwyer which Dwyer did the rest of the work. Also the runs by Dwyer. I think today was an all around good performance by Tech - not one person, certainly not Jaybo.

If that’s the case then we have to do Jaybo like we did Josh last week (who’s performance to me was far better than Jaybo’s today). There were a few plays that could have easily been a turnover and gone the other way. He had a couple of pitches that went behind the backs. He almost threw an interception in the end zone. There were a few play action plays that didn’t look to great. But that’s nothing but ifs. The game is about breaks and unfortunately last week we didn’t catch any.

Do I think Jaybe gets it? Sure. But now is not his time. He’s got to get bigger and he’s got to get a little muscle behind his passes. We’re not throwing the ball now, but CPJ has admitted that he would like to throw the ball more. Me being at the game today watching the few passes Jaybo had was not impressed so I think he has to work on that for the future. I think the kid gets it and one day he may start…just not today.

While i’m happy with the win I wish Tech would have a more balanced offense.I just don’t think the triple O will be very effective against fast defenses like FSU,UGA,and even Miami.I’d like to see some spread formations mixed in with the option and even possibly run the option from the shotgun every now and then? 3-1 is a good start but i’m just hoping Johnson expands the playbook.

OK folks…. Post game blogs are not always the most rational places of analysis….but here’s a take.

It’s great to look for things to be “worried” about in a win…but, common people….this was a WIN with an EXCLAMATION point. 38-7.

Ga Tech was clearly the better team. The only statistic that counts is the score. BE HAPPY! Whoever expected this much this soon.

Let’s lay off any “criticism” of the offense. In the interest of full disclosure, I was at the game. The neat thing about this offense is it puts pressure on the defense in one-on-one matchups on the edge. You saw the long runs. What you didn’t see (perhaps) was the 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 plays that were one missed tackle by MSU away from being another TD run.

We didn’t pass much today. We didn’t have to pass.

Paul Johnson is proving that this offense DOES work against ACC/SEC competition week in and week out.

Tech fans, let’s just continue to enjoy the ride and not get too concerned about …when it “won’t work”.
Coach Johnson has been in this business for 30+ years. He clearly has a clue as to what to do. Let the man coach and enjoy it.

So far as defense is concerned. We gave up NO meaningful points. 7 at the end by MSU was meaningless. We made plays when we had to make them. THATs what matters.

Let’s not take winning away as MState being that bad. Why don’t you ask Auburn, they scored 3 points, and oh yeah their ranked 10th. Claybo Shaw definitely is smoother running the option, and it will be interesting if Johnson gives him a start next game. He impressed me with how smooth he got the ball to the backs on the pitch, and also how he got the ball to the backs more than trying to run himself. The offense really looked very good, but some team will force them to pass, and that’s a big mystery if they can.

WOW! What a game! I was there, and I was impressed. That MSU defense is not a patsy, but they did not know what hit them today.

The blocking by our receivers and b-backs was awesome. PJ has this team playing together with a purpose.

Good game for the bumble bees today. Not that Miss St is a good team, but the G Tech offense looked pretty damn sharp. A couple more games like that and you’ll be knocking on the top 25’s door. Easily the best team in the coastal division, probably top 3 in the ACC from what I’ve seen. Savor the flavor while it lasts fellas - we all know you have at least one more loss coming down the pike (here’s a hint - it’ll be on Nov 29). Congratulations.

By The Truth

September 21, 2008 12:01 AM | Link to this

I agree with you GM…except the part about dropping UGA. Last I remember we had beat a top caliber SEC team Auburn two times in a row. After that they’ve been afraid to play us since. What’s up with that?

By Butts Wagner

September 21, 2008 12:02 AM | Link to this

Some final thoughts. Miss. St. has athletes on defense. They are not some scrappy unit that executes so well they overcome their physical shortcomings. They might not be as complete physically as the best defenses out there, but they are close. Doc Walker may be best known for giggling every time they do a Bojangles promo, but he’s made a couple of good points during the two GT games he’s done. Today he was pointing out how he can see why Miss. St.’s defense was so vaunted, and this was after the score was 14-0. And I would agree. Miss. St. is no pushover, they just got out schemed by the perfect option. (can we all agree to call CPJ’s offense the PO? no more spread triple option or whatever we’re calling it now.) Jaybo played very well, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but he did better than I could have hoped for. But Jaybo looks small out there compared to the other players. He needs to bulk up in my opinion if he wants to last in this offense at the FBS level. I fear for his health every time he gets hit. Also, I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this on previous posts, but I wanted to bring it up. Doc Walker said during the BC game that he liked Sedric Griffin’s intentions, because his intentions are bad. And all I’ve seen of 54 is that his intentions are bad and that it seems to be mostly a team wide deal. When the offense played a lot more triple option against VT and was having success, you could see that they were out there just putting their foot on the defense’s throat and daring the defense to fight back. There were too many mistakes against VT though, but they came out today and did the same thing, and kept it up the whole game. Without their miscues on offense, Miss. St. would have been much closer in the first half and their defense was not backing down. But GT kept executing and applying pressure and demoralized Miss. St. early in the second half. With some more depth, especially with the skill position players, GT will be a force to be reckoned with. As far as this year goes, it’ll be a grind. FSU has a defense, and that could pose problems. Miami has a defense (as far as we can tell). UNC has some playmakers on both sides of the ball. Don’t forget about Clemson’s backfield. And Uga(sic) won’t back down. GT won’t win them all, but so far, it looks like they won’t give up when the chips are down, which is a far cry from recent years. I look forward to seeing the team give its all and continued improvement on both sides of the ball.

By Turn Overs

September 21, 2008 12:16 AM | Link to this

The difference: NO TURNOVERS. For once, no turnovers. Shaw had a couple of close calls but that’s expected from a backup who is feeling out the speed of the game. If we can average just 1 turnover per game, we’ll have a chance to win every single game including the UGA game. Seriously…..but we have to work on our pass defense and continue to hold the ball high and tight.

We heard all week how this was gonna be close, MSU’s offense was bad but their D was solid. Tech took it to them right away against that vaunted SEC D and got it done. If Auburn is that pitiful, they are not a top 10 team. If LSU struggled that much, they aren’t a top 10 team either.

Bring it on, I love what Tech is doing, despite what ESPN is telling the rest of the world.

For the final thoughts of the day I would like to address several comments made on this blog. First, The Win. Great win. Stood up to an awesome defense and did what you were suppose to do. Win. Coaching. Great job CPJ. I peeped your game plan and saw how you used the toss sweeps to tire out the big D-Lineman early. Which caused them to tire early in the third quarter. I will say that you do have more passing options that you can explore but that option was clicking today many cylinders. Jaybo Shaw did an excellent job running this offense. They say when your QB makes the right reads the offense is tough to stop. Well Jaybo made the right reads alot. His size may be small but his heart and decision making is huge. On that Greg Smith TD he committed his body to the Defense and while falling down pitched the perfect pitch to Greg Smith for a 40+ yard TD. Beautiful. Actually, Nesbitt can learn from Jaybo and combine his throwing talents to make him and this offense a deadly weapon. To the doubters out there, give Jaybo his respect. He did an excellent job.
Defense. made big plays today. Bent but didn’t break. I think if the defensive backs would anticipate the direction that the QB will through in more we could make bigger and better plays on 3rd down. Also, why do we tackle so high all the time. This has gone on for more than the last 10 years. Get low and take out the runners feet. To many yards after first contact because we tackle too high. Michael Johnson had a great game and Walker, Morgan and Richards held there own and made some great plays. More pressure on the QB will help stop those long drives.
Finally, I must say. Relax all of the talk about this offense may not work hear or there. It has proven to work against all defenses. GA. Southern, and Navy never had any problems scoring. And that was against all types of competition. This great system now has a defense to go with it. Ain’t it Great. Great times are hear. Enjoy the ride TECH. Keep it up.

TheBlogger ,

I am surprised one of your intelligent tech friends hadn’t called you out already.

Miss State is at best the 10th best team in the SEC infront of Ole Miss (EASILY) and likely Arkansas.

Clemson was suppose to be the ACC’s gift to the BCS and is still easily the cream of the crop from the ACC. They were thuroughly dominated by the SEC’s 5th best team.

To compare GT’s win over a weak MSU to Bama’s over Clemson sounds like something a bama fan would say not a educated techie.

I will hold a glass up for you guys though. Here is hoping your a one loss team going into your game against us. Just makes our str of schedule component that much better.

By 2D

Noone said that MSU Was a great team. But most football people acknowledged they had a great defense.

  • Only gave up three TDs all year
  • Two of those were 14 and 12 yard drives
  • Held Auburn to 3 points

Tech carved up that mighty defense with a backup, freshman QB AND the backup center. That was an impressive performance.

Now it’s stupid to play the extrapolation game of who-beat-who. But, I think what we are seeing is an offense that is getting better each week, combined with a good defense. 8 wins and a good game with UGA should be doable if we continue with the same rate off improvement and do not suffer any substantial injuries.

If someone told Tech fans we’d see 8 wins this year, we’d have been ecstatic. In a couple of seasons, the sky is the limit!

Thanks Coach Johnson!

As one could imagine I don’t attend very many Tech games, but I was invited yesterday and saw an impressive bunch -and it certainly wasn’t Mississippi State. Having seen a number of Georgia Southern games back when Irk and then Paul were heading the program - watching a Tracy Ham perform like a magician - gave me an appreciation for this offense when it’s clicking. The freshman from Flowery Branch has just that kind of skill and I suspect that that fact hasn’t been lost on Paul Johnson. Don’t know how long before your man Nesbitt is truly healed but I would recommend he start thinking about another position.
