O-Line Improving?

Against Boston College, CPJ said his offensive line got whipped by the Eagles’ front.

Against Virginia Tech, the O-Line played better, helping the Jackets run for 278 yards on 50 carries. But there were still plenty of occasions in which the Hokies got great penetration. A couple of times, QB Josh Nesbitt was hit before he could even start carrying out the play. And don’t forget the blocked extra point, which resulted from a breakdown up front.

So how will Andrew Gardner, Cord Howard, Dan Voss, Joseph Gilbert and David Brown handle Mississippi State’s front four?

The Bulldogs aren’t huge up front — except for senior defensive tackle Jessie Bowman (6-1, 305).

He was an absolute monster against Auburn: 8 tackles, 3 1/2 for loss, and a forced fumble. He’s the SEC defensive lineman of the week.

The other tackle is senior Cortez McCraney (6-4, 272). The ends are senior Tim Bailey (6-3, 241) — an Iraq War veteran — and freshman Sean Ferguson (6-4, 225).

Bailey ranks second in the SEC with 4 tackles for loss. Ferguson is only the second true freshman in 22 years to start in his first game at Miss. St.

The Bulldogs lost standout LB Jamar Chaney to a season-ending leg injury, but CPJ says they are probably the best defense Tech will have faced thus far.

This game should tell us if the O-Line, a fairly experienced unit, has made significant progress since Boston College.

What do you think the verdict will be?

Tech should be encouraged.

OL looks like they are getting things together, sounds like everyone is getting healthy, and your next two games are against Gardner-Webb and the Dukies. Not out of the realm that Tech is 5-1 headed into Clem and Son’s on October 18th, and we know what kind of headcase the Tigers are.

The DL should have a coming out party of sorts against MSU, at least for Michael Johnson.

Tech should win this one on Saturday….GT 24 MSU 6.

Glad you guys are getting your act together…it will make beating you every year even more meaningful. Good luck until November 29th.

Haven’t heard much detail about Jonathan Dwyer’s status for the game, other than “he’ll play”. Nesbitt was pretty beat up by the end of last week’s game and this game will be played against a very, very physical D with an outstanding secondary.

Tech can and probably will win, but the Jackets’ D is going to have to generate some turnovers to shorten the field for the offense. Jackets kicking game needs to somehow get better as well.

Pretty sure this will be a low-scoring affair. Jackets win 16-13.

I agree with CW, we’ve got to get some turnovers from Miss.State. We won the games in which we got them and lost the game in which we did not get even one. I suspect, also, that MissState will show a bit more offense than they did against Auburn. It is not likely that they will go a whole game without making a third down first down. But if the oline has improved the Jackets should get their third victory.

I still say the offensive line play will be the key to the game. If they give Nesbitt time to operate, GT’s offense will be fine. If the MSU defensive linemen penetrate and blow up plays in the backfield like the VT defense, the game could go either way. By the fourth game of the season, our O-linemen should be much improved.

Glad someone’s finally pointed out Tech’s o-line. Behind fumbles and placekicking that has to be our #3 point of concern. If it holds it will be an ugly day for Missy State and we could see Tech win by 3+ TDs.

If not, Tech still wins but it will be an ugly, low-scoring affair.

What good is it for MSU if Tech fumbles and the MSU offense doesn’t know what to do with the ball?

Speaking of placekicking, if Tech builds up a cushion Blair needs to kick some FGs if the opportunity arises.

Like CW said, one of the main keys is getting turnovers. We had 3 TO’s last week which isn’t terrible but we were -3 in the TO/takeaway ratio. That’s not good. One other point is the punting game - how many of ya’ll are missing Durant Brooks about now. Blair is doing a great job with distance and hang time but we miss Brooks’ ability to drop the punt inside the 20. I don’t think we’ve done that this year. You add on that extra 10-12 yards or more and it makes playing offense a whole lot harder.

Everybody chill when the unsuspecting happens this weekend….. It is very possible that we lose to MSU. They will have been the best team we have played this year. I am thrilled with the overall progress of the team, but it will take another year of two in recruiting to make GT competitive…..

Go Jackets!

If they hold on to the ball they have a good offense, line and all.

Quick question on this option offense. When talking about turnovers, or the QB or A-Back, fumbling the ball more specifically. Could someone explain the logic behind the “mesh?” This is when the QB has to make a decision on whether or not to hand the ball off to the A-Back, or to keep it himself. It’s all determined off of the QB’s read on what the DE does—the DE breaks inside, the QB takes the ball. If the DE rushes up the field, then the A-Back handles it and rushes up the middle. This is what I understand basically, but I could be way off. My question(finally I know) is how does the A-Back know whether or not to actually take the ball, or let the QB take it. The QB literally puts the ball into his gut, makes his read, and then let’s him have it or pulls the ball back out. I have seen a few instances this year already where fumbles have occured between the two because of the confusion. If I mistakenly said A-Back instead of B-BAck I appologize. I’m still trying to learn this offense.

gtforever,

MSU is best team Tech has played. Based on what? A loss to La Tech, 2 points against Auburn ( who lost 2 in a row to Tech) and a big win over a cup cake.

In my view BC and VA Tech are much better teams but MSU is dangerous because they have not played well this year.

They have probably had their manhood challenged by the coaching staff this week.

Tech will have to play well and hagn on to the ball.
