Angst in Blacksburg

I’ve taken a quick, completely unscientific poll of Hokies fans and the sense from them is that their run — four straight seasons of 10 or more wins, two ACC titles in that span — is over.

A couple were saying they’d be happy with 8 wins this year.

There is a lot of doom and gloom over the state of the offense. Coach Frank Beamer got more hands-on this week working with the offense, players’ manhood was questioned, etc…

This could all play out two ways. (Actually a million ways, but two seem quite plausible).

Virginia Tech struggles early to move the ball, the Jackets get a big defensive play — like a sack/fumble from Michael Johnson or Vance Walker — grab the lead, and hammer away with the running game.

Or the Hokies feed off the crowd, come up big on special teams, get a long run from Tyrod Taylor, and turn around their season.

We saw Tech’s grit last week in Chestnut Hill. They’ll need that and more against the desperate Hokies.

The big injury question for Ga. Tech is whether WR Demaryius Thomas (mild concussion) will play. As some of you have noted, the 6-3, 229-pounder is critical not only as a receiver but as a blocker.

For Va. Tech, DE Jason Worilds (shoulder) and LB Cam Martin (groin) are probable, while OL Blake DeChristopher (leg) is out.

So how do you think it will play out?

Great thoughts, Larry.

We should know the winner of this ball game by the end of the 1st quarter.

I honestly believe that.

I agree that Thomas is critical to the run game. He is a big time blocker; I hope he can play.

Taylor will be hard to contain today, but if we contain him and not have too many turnovers on offense, I believe we can win this game easily.

I think it will be important to get the lead early and take the crowd out of the game as much as possible.

Well, those are my “non-expert” opinions.

GO JACKETS!!

One thing for sure: VT will bring their very best effort; they will be playing all out trying to prove they are not as bad as many pundints are claiming.

I think GT has a good chance of winning as long as we play with great effort/determination AND we do not give the game away with turnovers.

Hold on to the ball, and do our thing, and we will be fine. Go Jackets-

Greg Smith needs to pull his head OUT and get in the game. He has enough talent to make a huge impact in this game. Make your blocks Greg and catch the ball when thrown your way.

The beautiful thing about winning is that, for the most part, it keeps the fleas away. Know what I mean?! Let’s keep it up! Go Jackets-

INJURY UPDATE: Not good news for Tech.

WR Demaryius Thomas (mild concussion) did not make the trip. Redshirt freshman R.B. Clyburn (6-6, 209) will start in his place.

Backup OL A.J. Smith hurt his arm in Thursday’s practice and also did not make the trip.

wes and Old GT Nut,

It’s refreashing to see some real GT fanatics. As for Bay Bay, damn. I really wanted to see him pancake the Macho man, not Randy Savage. We win this game with a strong D and BIG plays on offense. Easy, take Tech +7 or whatever the spread is.

Sorry I can’t join the fanatics. I guess there’s too much engineer in me. I need to see more proof. I will say that it’s good to see that Coach Johnson has already got some folks believing. He’s already done something that Chan could NEVER do, that is, energize the fans.

I fear that we’re going to see the rebound of VT today. The trend is already forming in the early games. Teams that have looked unexpectedly bad in their first couple of weeks are returning to form. Our young team is in for a return to earth.

That was the worst helmet to helmet EVER! If we lose, it will cost us the game. And then the face mask. Unreal. Just unreal.

That penalty of cooper taylor was crock. If the qb is going to run he is going to have to take all hits no questions asked!! The refs can win the game for VT. Awful.

Well, the turnover before the half, and then the 2 personal fouls cost us the game. I fully support PJ going for it on 4th down, even though it didn’t work out. Im just very unhappy with the helmet to helmet call, it cost us the game. We hung in there, and im proud of our guys. That loss just hurt b/c we out gained VT, and should have won. Go Jackets.

VT was not too much for GT Larry. Stupid headline. They gave the game away and VT should kiss the ref !

Well, I hope this is not a precursor to how Johnson calls games against quality opponents. Run/pass ratio too disparate. 4 passes will not get it done; defense can not be allowed to know that almost every play is going to be a run.

Terrible, terrible, terrible play- calling. How ‘bout a little diversity in lieu of predictability? Terribly disappointing game and unlike the play-calling I saw in the first two.

The play calling wasn’t bad. He stuck with what was working in the 2nd half. We were moving the ball on the ground, so why turn away from it?

We didn’t get the game up here in Ohio but what happened at the end of the 1st half? We were up 9-7 and had the ball with 1:30 to go and then next thing I saw it was 9-14 at halftime!!??

We lost this game from TOs and penalties….we were able to move the ball on VT. I’m not discouraged by this loss because this sort of thing will happen with this kind of offense that is a high-risk offense. We don’t turn the ball over, we don’t lose…………simple as that. Tech fans need to calm down and know we will go 5-1 going into Clemson. We may not have won today, but the foundation has been laid…………..Nesbitt has shown he can operate in this offense. Tyrod Taylor played a decent game and made the plays when he needed to. This offense will get better as the season continues……….believe that.

I agree. Looking at the stats, turnovers (our 3 to their 0) and penalties were the difference. We had over 140 more yards then them - so that is a good sign. Overall, this team is playing much better then expected.

Guys:

If you are GT fans, you need to support this coach. He is an excellent coach. I think he knows our receivers are questionable right now, especially with Demarius out. Greg Smith dropped a perfect pass, and Josh barely overthrew Roddy on another. The pass plays in this offense will be the big play variety, but there will not be many.

This is a young team trying to get used to a new offense, and they deserve our support. Nesbitt is for real, and this team is going to get better.

If any of you expected us to be this competitive, this early, your expectations are definitely high. We are competing in every game, even on the road, with an offensive line that is getting beat time and time again. Our young team is making a few mistakes, but that Cooper penalty should not have been called. Without that, we probably would have won today.

I am very excited about the future with CPJ, not just this year, but next year and into the future.
