Who Will Tech Face?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It will be interesting to see how Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer deploys his quarterbacks on Saturday.
Senior Sean Glennon, the pocket passer, played the entire opener (a 27-22 loss to East Carolina). Afterward, Beamer ditched his plan to redshirt sophomore Tyrod Taylor.
Taylor got 39 snaps, Glennon 22, in last week’s 24-7 win over Furman. Taylor had a 50-yard run among his 112 rushing yards. (Also completed 4-of-5 throws).
Beamer won’t talk about the quarterback situation, but it seems likely Tech will see more of Taylor than Glennon.
Of course Glennon had a career night at Tech last year, throwing for nearly 300 yards and 2 TDs in a 27-3 Hokies’ win. He should be confident against the Jackets.
Still, my guess is Tech would rather face Glennon than the multi-dimensional Taylor. It sure sounded that way from talking to players and coaches.
Tech fans — who would you prefer and why?

I think that the main concern will be how our d-line does against their o-line. If we can dominate their we should do well against both of them. But its going to be a real tough game. Beamer will have them fired up.

It doesn’t really matter which QB we face. The thing that really matters is that both sides have good coaches now. That has not been true the last 6 years when Tech was saddled with the worst coach in the history of the NCAA. Thank God and Greyhound that he is gone FOREVER.

Hi Larry,
Great Question.
I would argue for Glennon for this reason: Subtraction and confusion. Without Eddie Royal and Hyman, Glennon doesn’t know how to throw to and is just very slow to make decisions, he looks confused. Their O line is dismal as well.
For Taylor I have two words: Nesbitt, Shaw. The GT Defense has been chasing Nesbitt and Shaw around all Spring and Summer. They know about the mobile QB. I look for GT to play Taylor like they did Perilloux. If you watched that game the GT DB’s played a DB spy a lot of the time and did not flush the pocket. They made Perilloux throw the ball, and when he did run he never got a huge gain. GT defense will try to contain TT and make him throw to the new inexperienced receivers for Word-Daniel and Butler, the experienced corners, to make the play. Taylor rushed for 112 yards against Furman, but no TD’s…..
GT’s defense will win this one for us and Bud Foster has never played against an O like GT has, unlike the BC coordinator who had seen it, and we will be able to squeeze another TD out of this one. VT couldn’t put more than 3 on the board against Furman, a much weaker defense than GT, until the 3rd quarter.

It doesn’t matter who is under center for VT. They are a pathetic excuse for a team. Tech will pull it out and look good for a possible ACC Title game bid. The entire ACC is down this year and can’t stake up against other conferences except the Big East. Coach Johnson’s offense will be a force in a few years when players get to the field…until then expect more losses to UGA.
GO SEC!!!

What in the heck does that mean?

Invenwhatever, I don’t think SEC was doing anything but bashing Tech and the ACC. And it’s homer, not homo. As to the blog, I have a feeling VT will be putting in some O packages just for Taylor, that haven’t been shown yet. I think we have enough speed to contain, anyway. It will all hinge on their O line. I don’t like that injury to BeBe, though. Go Jackets-

I’d like to thank inveniojacket for actually being able to understand what I was saying. I guess that is the last time I’ll attempt to have a sensible conversation with most Tech fans. By the way, it generally takes a new college head coach a few years to field players that fit in his style of offense. Look at Rodriguez at Michigan. But I guess wes needs to remove his head from his own rear. GT45, while I can’t say I was not bashing a little, you can’t argue that this is a down year for the ACC and Tech will use it to their advantage. If that hurts your feelings, then grow up! See you all after Thanksgiving!

Quick update on Demaryius Thomas: he has a mild concussion, that’s why he’s questionable for the game.
Thomas had four catches for 56 yards against B.C. Looked to me like he was getting some nice cushion from the DBs….

Does it matter what QB it is? The best receiver on the field when VT has the ball is going to be Morgan Burnett.

Jefferson needs to take his skirt off. Can someone please explain why our “gladiator” is out 2 games in a row with a forearm/hand injury?? Is it broken?? Even if it is you gotta suck it up and play as a LB. Maybe I’m missing something here- I can understand Barnes being out but its hard for me to swallow a forearm injury with no reference being made to it being broken. Anyone with insight please let me know! Otherwise I’ll continue to question this guys nickname.

I DONT THINK THAT GUY “M” HAS A JOB OR IS DOING ANYTHING WITH HIS LIFE. HE’S ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE TO POST A COMMENT EVERYTIME THERE IS A BLOG. WHICH MEANS HE MUST SPEND WAY TO MUCH TIME ON AJC.COM. “M”, WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?
And on another note, I marked this game down as a “W” when they announced Taylor would redshirt. Now, its up in the air!

When you look at the sheer awfulness of VT’s offense, and the very rough execution of GT’s offense so far, this has the potential to be one of the ugliest football games ever played. Both of VT’s quarterbacks are pretty bad, but don’t forget what Glennon did to us last year. I think it was his only respectable game of the year. He’ll have the confidence factor going in. Glennon also has a lot more experience, which you would think would begin to pay off at some point. I think I would rather play against Taylor - but I expect we will see more of Glennon. GT wins 10-6.

If Demariyius Thomas can’t play tomorrow, this will be a huge blow to our offense. He is our best overall receiver. Not to mention, he is one of the main reasons we were able to break off long runs against BC with his great down field blocking. Go back and look at the Dwyer touchdown, Thomas and Cox made key blocks to allow Dwyer to score untouched. I don’t think CPJ will let him risk further injury by playing him on Sat. Huge break for VT.

Good point Yellar, we may miss Thomas’ blocking more than his catching. Hate that he’s hurt, but that’s football. The others are just going to have to step up.

After watching the slow footed BC QB run for several first downs last weekend, complete a tremendous number of 5rd down conversions, and just generally look much more composed than the Tech offense…I am still amazed Tech won that game.
If they play flat, miss more assignment blocks than they make, and turn the ball over three times in this game - it will be a landslide victory whichever VaTech QB plays.
That was an absolute mess last week at BC. Even the BC team has struggled this week trying to figure out how they lost that game. Two of Tech’s three decent plays were busted plays that Nesbitt wasn’t contained on. I love Tech but the Tech fanbase that seems to believe this is a great team simply is not very knowledgable about the sport. Currently, we are very weak offensively with missed blocks all over the place!!! Go back and watch the video from BC where the Tech coaches twice yelled at G.Smith for missed assignments and on the third the coaches acutally came out on the field and yanked him off! Currently, Tech is a 7-5 team at best and a 4-8 team at worst.

If I need a good laugh I might tune in to this game. Have there ever been more turnovers in a football game than points? This could be history.

FalconFever,
You sure have a high opinion of yourself.
Were you at the BC game? Did you see the “don’t quit” in the eyes of the Tech players?
This group of players believe in themselves - and that is huge.
I have followed Tech football for over 40 years as a spectator and player.
This Tech team is young and they will make mistakes; but, they will not give up.
These guys are talented, tough and well conditioned. And, they are well led by a great coaching staff.
Beamer had a good reason to muzzel his QB’s and tell his team they had to get ready for Georgia Tech.
If the Paul Johnson offense clicks, Beamer will not stop it. And, the defense that will be in Lane stadium tomorrow will be tougher than any Tech defense he has ever faced.
Georgia Tech will have to play well to win in B’burg because the VA Tech team is also talented and fast. And, like Georgia Tech, they also believe in their ability to win.
The crowd noise is a factor but not as big a factor as it is in LSU’s Tiger Stadium.

Voice of reason, back up why you think we lose. I don’t see it. I think GT takes this one.
FalconFever,
You should know that a win is a win. An ugly win is better than a pretty loss. Moron. Look we won that game, it was a game we weren’t supposed if you don’t like the way we did it, take your comments elsewhere.

SEC, Does anything in my post say anything about hurting my feelings? We take our shots from idiots like you over here all the time. The best news of the day is you won’t post here anymore! There is nothing in you post worth reading.FF, a W is a W. Everyone in the free world picked Tech to be 1-1, right now. Again, we know we’re not great, yet, but you are missing the big picture. But you won’t ever get it, so I won’t explain it to you. Frank, if I need a good laugh, I’ll look at a picture of your girlfriend! We may not win tomorrow, but I promise we’ll fight to the end! Geez, to hear you people tell it Tech beat the New England Patriots this past Saturday, not BC. Yes it was an upset. NO that does not mean Georgia Tech has arrived or that they will win the ACC this year. It was a disgustingly ugly game. Boston College is breaking in a new quarterback and is simply not that good right now. Tech has its own problems in sustaining drives and holding on to the football. Tech has a long long way to go and an increasingly difficult schedule as the season progresses. Virginia Tech is struggling offensively but they will give you all you can handle on defense.
I have seen you Tech people get gitty with joy after an early season win too many times not to speak up this time around. Remember last year when you thought you had beaten a national powerhouse at Notre Dame? How did that work out? It is a long season. You folks need to settle down.

inveniojacket, Speak for yourself. Tech fans are supposed to take “until then expect more losses to UGA.” as a compliment? Screw SEC. BTW, do you have any idea what “homer” means? It’s not “homo” bashing.
As for the actual blog, I think our D is hungry for this game, big time. Also, I think our O will be a little bit better this week. It’s only going to get better as the season rolls along. And by better in this O, I mean 1 or 2 more BIG (TD) plays and more ball control. I hope Bay Bay can play, I’d love to see Macho get pancaked.

THE GEORGIA TECH COACH IS CORRECT. IF THE TV ANNOUNCERS WERE SO COTTON-PICKING SMART, THEY SHOULD BE COACHING!!!!
I SEE THIS OCCURRING IN NEARLY ALL TV GAMES, AND ACROSS ALL SPORTS. SOME OF THEM MAY HAVE BEEN GOOD ATHLETES, BUT NOT GOOD COACHES!
