Talkin’ QBs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Got the distinct sense from CPJ that we will NOT see the same type of QB rotation we saw in the opener, when starter Josh Nesbitt departed in the third quarter and Jaybo Shaw played much of the second half. Obviously, the game was in hand, so it was a perfect chance to get Shaw some reps.
Saturday against Boston College, Shaw might not play at all. Or the freshman might play some. CPJ won’t tip his hand.
Incidentally, the coach was effusive in his praise of third-string senior Calvin Booker, who got in at the very end against Jacksonville State. Asked about him in the media teleconference, CPJ called Booker “a great kid, the quintessential team player…His attitude is contagious for everyone else.” CPJ added that Booker will “have his time…we have some packages for him.”
Here’s what the top two QBs did in the opener: Nesbitt — 11 carries, 60 yards, 2 TDs; 5-of-12 passing for 87 yards. Shaw — 9 carries, 51 yards, TD; 3-of-3 passing for 48 yards.
Nesbitt is the clear No. 1 (and his finger is fine). But as many have pointed out, this offense requires a solid backup. Its physical toll is unique. And Shaw sure looked comfortable running that option.
So what kind of rotation — if any — would you like to see among the QBs?

I’m good with seeing Nesbitt throw for 150 and run for 100 every game…I think Shaw is going to get there at some point and do some serious damage for Tech. But, Nesbitt is very capable now. I haven’t seen anything that says there’s anyone on our schedule we can’t beat: not Clemson, not VT, and certainly not a team that only put up three scores on Kent State. That said, why build Shaw for the future when Nesbitt can play now!

Ideally, would like to see them all get reps, but realistically, we need Nesbitt getting all the touches he can. If we ever get a cushion, absolutely play Shaw and Book whenever possible. I would think, if they are facing the No 1 D in practice, it would help to keep them fresh, although there is no substitute for the real thing! Go Jackets-

The Tech Alumni Association will sponsor a Tickle Pile at the Boston College Soccer Field immediately following the game Saturday. Alumni and students are invited. We’ll be there rain or shine, hot or cold. A few goose bumps might be interesting.:-)

I still don’t think Nesbitt will be the starter for the next two years. He’s just not shifty-quick enough to run the offense … but maybe CPJ is taking that into consideration, hence the limited amount of triple-option plays. I’ll take B.C.

I think it’s great to give the backups meaningful experience by inserting them randomly into the game for a play or three. Keep the opponent off balance and prep the backups for the future. Plus, your starter has a chance to watch a couple of plays from the sideline and maybe see the defense a little differently. And by all means, give the backups lots of reps when we have a comfortable lead. Since I couldn’t get ESPN360 last week and didn’t make it to the game, I wouldn’t mind seeing these backups play much of the second half this week with a big lead. Finally, if the backups know for certain they will get some snaps, they should prepare a little more diligently.

For whatever it’s worth I think 3 QB’s need to be ready at all times…two option run/pass and one run and shoot/pass. At the same time there needs to be a 4th and 5th QB who can move up a notch if there is an injury. The great thing about this offense is many skill people get a chance to play at some point since it requires a lot of hitting/blocking. WE threw the ball what 15 to 18 times when the game was out of hand. Against a physical fast defense we may have to double those numbers to open the option game up possibly. At the same time we have to have decent completion ratios or it does’nt make sense to waste the play throwing the ball. Just think Roddy Jones, Luke Cox, Peoples, and many others had a chance to touch the ball when normally they would be riding the pine at least more.

INJURY UPDATE: Starting LBs Anthony Barnes (shoulder) and Brad Jefferson (arm/wrist) won’t play Saturday at Boston College. Senior Tony Clark and junior Sedric Griffin will start at outside linebacker, with Kyle Jackson moving inside. Backup LB Shane Bowen (quad) is listed as probable. Backup OL A.J. Smith is sick and has been ruled out. Sophomore Scott Blair will continue to handle punting, placekicking and kickoffs.

I think you’re right on the money… Plus, with CPJ, his entire way is that of “wait and see.” And that’s why he’s the coach that he is. He’s a gambler and he rarely loses a hand.

One more thing from Saturday’s depth chart, which Ken Sugiura noticed:
Redshirt freshman Bryce Dykes has replaced Calvin Booker as the No. 3 quarterback. Didn’t see that coming after CPJ’s comments above…..

Nesbitt will lead us to several “surprising” wins this year.I think we are definitely in contention for a BCS bowl.I know that will a foregone conclusion after winning the ACC,but in case we win 10 games, could get an at-large bid.

You know, sometimes I wonder if ugag fans get on here, and write absurd predictions under a “GT” name just so we get bombarded by other ugag fans. Then again, I don’t think they are that clever, so I guess some GT fans are just that optimistic (stupid).
George- come on man. Im as enthusiastic about GT as anybody, but claiming we are definitely in BCS contention is stretching it…alot. And an ACC team has yet to get an at large bid, and after the way things started this year, I doubt that it will happen this BCS. So only if we win the ACC could we be in a BCS game, but saying that we are definitely in contention at this point is dumb. If we are, then so is every other ACC team b/c no one has played a conference game yet. Lets wait until after this weekend to start talking about a BCS game…
I love GT, but sometimes you guys make me wonder.

The lowest score Navy posted last year was 24pts, which they did twice >> vs Wake Forest and vs Rutgers. In both games, they had 3 turnovers and lost the game. The speed and talent at Tech compared to Navy should make up for the spread option learning curve. I’d like to see Shaw get his touches when the ball is past or at mid-field, thus reducing the damage if he makes a freshman mistake. Nesbitt gets hit on every single play. We simply cannot expect him to take each snap for every game. Having back-ups with game xp is critical, incl the B-backs and A-backs.

Navy played BC in the 2006 Car Car Bowl and lost in the last few minutes. Navy put over 400 yards of offense on that BC team that has many of the same Defensive players that it has now.

Nickname suggestion: Nezzzzzbit!
I feel very confident in Jaybo as a backup. It was obvious that he’s run an option type offense for years.

Hey UGA folks:
You have a great team, deep and skilled, congrats. I hope you win every game, but the Tech game. The only thing you guys need is a fan base who is more polite and humble, in order to truely be “winners”.
You have a great team, now just win with class. You tend to come accross as demeaning redneck bullies. I’m sure CMR would prefer a classy fan base. Help the team help you…

The only thing we have proved so far is that wa can beat a AA team and that we don’t have a kicking game. If we get hammered by BC the Johson doubters will start showing up. The pressure will be on for Johnson to prove he is more then just a great Talker and AA coach.
If you take away the Notre Dame win at Navy(since everybody beat them last year), Johnsons record against average Collage Teams is 4 n 4. If he doesn’t perform better here in a weak ACC, we will just be the same old wonnabees.
Saturdays game needs to be a win!

Bobby Dodd, don’t do that. Don’t set the expectation that Saturday is a must win. You are saying that a school who is changed coaches, personnel, system, attitude, basically everything…and who has yet to play one conference game…somehow is in a “must win” against the defending conference champion? Give them a couple years to get their guys fluid in the system. At least one year. Don’t make the very first real game a must win, that’s not realistic…you will be disappointed…this change is a work in progress and requires both time, patience, and dedication.

gatech92 it is a must game for alot of the bigger talkers on this blog. Their big mouths and inflated expectation driven trash talk makes almost every game Tech plays a must game. Their mouths have written checks that the team can’t cash and they are scared s**#s that they’ve made fools of themselves with all the big talk.
