Can Tech take advantage?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The young Yellow Jackets aren’t supposed to do much in the ACC this season, at least according to the prognosticators.
But after seeing much of the conference fall on its face in Week 1 — Virginia Tech, Clemson, Virginia, and N.C. State come to mind — does that give you more confidence that Tech can contend?
The ACC is taking a beating nationally for its performance on Saturday. We can safely say the conference looks more wide open than it did a week ago.
The question is: Can Tech take advantage and outperform expectations?
NOTE: Practice update coming later today in the Comments section.

If the ACC is down this year, then certainly Tech should benefit.
Remember, though, it is just the first game. No one can predict the season based on the first game….. no matter what the ajc says! For all that we know at this point, the ACC could be the toughest football conference this year. My point is that we just don’t really know right now.

I hope that we can take advantage of the weak acc this year…but i need to wait until this weekend before I say much more. If we win and play well against BC, then we definitely have a shot at the ACC. Man, I hate it for the acc, but I like it for GT!

Absoblutely, VT is very vulnerable, Clemson can be shut down, UVA is slap sorry, and UNC struggled as well. Watch out for MIA though. I predict they will beat FLA this weekend and work their way back to supremacy. First things first though, we must show we can run our offense against BC. Tech should be 2-0 heading into Blacksburg. Whoever picked Tech 80th to start the season is an idiot. I bet they had Tenn. and VT in their top 10. What a joke preseason rankings are! Polls should come out until four games into the season.

We are all guilty of drawing conclusions on the entire season after one game. Think about how excited the Tech fan base was after Notre Dame last year. They were really bad and we were really average. That being said, I feel much better about our chances in the ACC. these next two games are key. We knew Va Tech was young, but BC’s game against Kent didn’t tell me much. We will see if these teams improve from week 1 to week 2 as much as they say.

Going into the season, I had adopted a wait-and-see attitude about how the Jackets would do.
However, the team was crisper on offense and defense than I expected against JSU. The performances from the ACC last weekend were also far worse than I had expected.
In watching Johnson on Thursday night, he projected a level of expectations from his players. He also seemed DETERMINED to have them reach those expectations. If he has his way, I can seem him doing better in the ACC than everyone thought. In a heated coaching matchup, I think he will do very well. Also, we have (I can’t believe I’m saying this after one week) better talent at QB—and with greater depth—than the rest of the league.
I believe this Jackets team will have a greater upside than anyone expected!
Go Jackets! THWG!

the acc is really not ‘down’ if you compare players.
look no further than the the number of players that are drafted by the nfl per conference. the acc was right up there with the sec in that regard yet…. our teams stink.
has to be the coaching.
getting rid of the bowdens and groh would be a great start to upgrading the conference.

I think Tech will be a lot better than most people predict.
I don’t think you can write off the ACC just because Tommy Bowden “choked” against Alabama. He is one of the most overrated coaches in the land.
With the exception of Georgia, Tech has had good success against SEC teams and the Georgia situation is ready to change.
The SEC lost to LA. Tech last weekend.
Beamer will have Virginia Tech playing tough the rest of the year.
Boston College will be strong but Tech may surprise them this weekend.
Fla. State has some great players and may give Florida as much as they can handle.
By the time Tech gets to Georgia it is going to be really interesting. Now Georgia is going to have to play against a Tech team with a real coach.

I believe that if GT can take one of the next 2 (hopefully win both), they will have an opportunity to compete for their division crown, but they cannot lose both of the upcoming road games.
What will it take for GT to outperform expectations? I think it will come down to turnovers (and key personnel staying healthy).
Go Jackets!!

Larry, welcome to the blog. OLD GT NUT has been telling us for weeks how Tech will outperform expectations. I don’t think that this year is significantly different than the last three in the ACC, but we never took advantage of those opportunities. Thankfully, our new coach seems more competent to thrive in college football. I believe we are easily capable of winning the Coastal Division this year and even the ACC title.

Looking at the ACCC:
VT is not invincible and not a runaway favorite anymore. Miami is looking good. It could become a 3-way scramble for the ACCC between VT, GT, and Miami.
I’m writing off Carowhina and UVA until they prove me wrong. Duke is better, but still has a way to go. Duke will challenge UVA—and maybe UNC—for the bottom of the ACCC.
Week 1 Projection: Hoagies: Down but still not out Candy Canes: Looking impressive—we’ll learn more next week GT: Ditto Carowhina: Still not ready for prime time Puke: Not in the cellar anymore UVA: Al Groh, better update that resume. Probably the hottest seat in the ACC.
In the ACCA: Wake: Not just by default, they’re also dang good Clempsun: Bowden Bowl will be a fight for the Gator Bowl…may also be a retirement party for Daddy. Half @$$ U: Ditto, except Bobby will be getting gold watches in the mail if the CrimiNoles flirt with .500 again BC Powderpuffs: Tune in next week… Maryland: Too early to tell NCSU: Probably the WORST team in the ACC. Period.
For Tech, the VT, Carowhina, and Auburn With A Lake games are looking easier, Duke a touch tougher, and Miami a LOT tougher.
The ACC races are going to be tight and no conference game can be overlooked.

The ACC is terrible. Tech looked a little better than I expected vs. Jax State…I think the Jackets will win 2 of the next 3 versus BC, V-Tech & Miss State, and then will beat Duke and Gardner-Webb (of course). 5-1 after 6 games with a new offense AND a new defense would be a great start.

Tech didn’t surprise me on Thursday. I’ve been to the practices and saw this for myself. It’s the AJC and other sports writers who would crapping on the offense. But I saw this with my own two eyes in practice. Anyways, I think we lose to BC which might be our toughest test all year, and beat VT and are still in control in the division. It will come down to us vs. Miami on Nov 20 to decide who goes to the ACCCG.

It hurt watching the ACC teams this weekend. The ACC isn’t as strong as some years, but don’t judge one weekend for the season. The ACC still has some coaches and players that will light up this year. For all you Ga bloggers sounding off here, Alabama is going to make ya’ll a believer in a few weeks. I went to Ga Southern before football but have watched both of Coach Johnson’s national champianship winning games. I was at the game Thurs. night and I know what is still yet to come. Tech will do much better than predicted in the ACC this year. They might not be ready to beat UGA this year, but they may give the new little Uga heart failure. Georgia will play Tech with at least two failures on thier record this year. I wish them well until the Tech game then they can go to where they belong.

Not to take anything away from the SEC since they appear to have 4 or so really strong teams but Tenn and Miss. St. were beaten and the Cardinals are sliding post Petrino it may appear so take the first week with a grain of salt. With the ACC UVA is rebuilding, the same with N.C. State, VT, and BC. How fast they can rebuild is the question. By the end of the year these teams probably won’t resemble the teams that lost this past weekend. As for Tech, they have talent and some depth to be in a better scheme now than the last several years in terms of using their athleticism. The key question is how fast can the take hold of this offense when up against better talent like the next two weeks. Some may have noticed that Taylor Bennett helped LA. Tech win over the weekend and that is good for him and possibly a shot at the next level. But his stats were 14 for 40. That means 26 plays were duds. The option that Johnson has brought in gives those 26 plays a better chance and we can still throw the ball. We threw it 18 times and were’nt behind at all so this offense can wing it if it has too and my guess is the percentage completion ratio will get better.

Gentlemen:
Recap of what I have been writing to GT fans:
The key for GT is the Coastal schedule. ACC-Atlantic is still up in the air.
First, CPJ isnt gonna let BC ring-up 450+ yds passing, nor is CPJ gonna let VT ring-up 350+ yds passing, and throw 5 INTs. I beleive GT beats BC close on 9/6th. And, there should be NO DOUBT that GT will ROUT VT on 9/13th.
If GT beats BC, then I think the only ACC questions marks for GT will be CU, FSU, Miami. I like odds for GT vs. those 3. GT gets 5 more weeks after VT game before seeing CU on Oct 18th.
A win at BC opens the door to Coastal title. A win at CU, practically guarantees it. I’m not worried about GT beating UVA, UNC, Duke. Miami late in the season might be a close game.

And as for the conference, yeah the ACC had a bad weekend, but Tech can use it to our advantage.
Why is nobody in the media talking about two mighty SEC teams losing to LaTech and UCLA??

Everyone is correct on one note… The ACC is not very good again. That said, is Alabama the 5th or 6th best team in the SEC? We now know that Tenn is not and no one else in the SEC has played anyone. South Carolina (the same ones that beat UGA last year) maybe one of the better ones. Who is going to be good this year? Who knows after 1 week of mostly cupcakes and hundreds of new players starting or playing for the first time.
Let’s enjoy our new coach and the progress we are making. Let’s enjoy the opportunity to wear out our friends from UGA when their 10 oe 11 win coach once again produces 10 or 11 wins and looses a couple of games. I believe we have more fun when UGA looses than when we win. It makes our blog a whole lot better!
Tech could surprise some people and us. Expecting to the ACC is very lofty at this point. Playing very well by the Nov. showdown is very possible. With a small amount of luck and UGA having a few more injuries and few more people locked up who knows what could happen. Right now we just need to enjoy our time and watch it play out one week at a time!

Really too early to tell. After the next two weeks, we’ll have a much better idea. Offensively, the improvement from spring to Game 1 was impressive. Still a lot of fine tuning to do, however, and special teams needs some work. The ‘D’ line is solid, but still a few question marks on the defense.
One game at a time and all the other stuff will take care of itself. Having said that, there is reason for optimism ! I still say this offense will improve on a weekly basis.
Go Jackets !

The Jackets looked good and most of the other ACC teams did not, but it is still very early. I fear that our depth is not that good at all positions and that a few key injuries could really kill us — surely hope I am wrong. Also, I fear that Clemson has too many superb athletes not to come out firing the rest of the season. May just win the rest of them — surely hope I’m wrong. Lets see a big win Saturday and keep the ball rolling.

What is hilarious to me is that the sportswriters are the ones who “annointed” these teams as the best of the ACC and then when the teams fail, the sportswriters don’t identify themselves as the source of the mistake. They simply bash the whole conference for their own inability to judge talent. Sportswriters are becoming idiots like the rest of the “journalist” in the media The ACC bashing and the love affair with the SEC were across the board this weekend. I listened/watched several different channels and they all sang from the same hymm book. Interestingly, NOT ONE of them said anything about Missippi State losing to La Tech. I guess that would have meant they had to be objective and say teams lose in all conferences.

Once the passing attack of GT becomes legit, which it will, CPJ will pull out all the stops and turn his guys loose. Thats when it will be interesting for their opponents. But not until. A team that does not have alot of time to prepare for GT won’t know if they should poop or turn left. Thats what makes this offense so much fun to watch and play. On the fip side, so difficult for other coaches to get ready to stop those big plays he knows are coming. Just sit back and watch and let Tech’s defense create opportunities to get the “O” back on the field.

Congrats to the Jackets on the win.I think many thought that the presence of the former LSU qb was all of a sudden going to make Jax St. something special, but Tech put them in their place early as they should have and good for them! My step-son played both ways on the line for JAX St. back when they were a Div.2 powerhouse, National Champs his Sr. Year. They really should have stayed there, have not done that well in 1-AA. Tech could really be a force in the ACC this year as it looks like Coach Johnson has the guys ” getting it”, and some of the other teams did not look too impressive in the openers. As we all know, one game does not a season make, but I have thought all along that Tech had gotten a solid coach and would really turn things around. I truly hope that the Techsters have a great year( except , of course the late Nov. Trip to Athens). I personally hope that between the two of us we keep all of these Ga.kids at home and at our respective schools. We also need to get our AD’s to get after the Atlanta Sports Council to stop bringing in out of state schools to play that first game at the Dome.Let Tech play somebody one year, and UGA the next, and not give these others a recruiting edge over either one of us! Best of luck to CPJ and the Jackets for the ACC run.

The question is does it matter. The Acc sucks. The ACC can’t get out of its own way, so even if Tech were to go undefeated, We would still only be king of a pile of crap. Tech would still garner little respect. Just like last year when we defeated Notre Dame, it was meaningless then and it will be meaningless now. Beating teams that everyone can beat means nothing. Conference USA and the WAC appear to be stronger than the ACC this year.
The Sunbelt may also be stronger.
Tech only has a chance to win the ACC if the rest of the conference is down. It looks like the ACC is dead as a door nail right now.
Tech looked good against a crummy Jacksonville State. Given Tech’s schedule though it may not know if it is good or not until it’s 12th game of the season.
This will not be the year the ACC wins its first BCS bowl though. It may not even fill its bowl tie ins in post season.

Practice ended a little while ago, and starting outside linebacker Anthony Barnes (shoulder) was unable to practice again. Middle linebacker Brad Jefferson (arm/wrist) already has been ruled out for Boston College, with senior Travis Chambers expected to start in his place.
I asked redshirt freshman Kyle Jackson, a starter at outside linebacker, what the changing lineup might mean against the Eagles. (B.C. rushed for 230 yards against Kent State).
“I feel like we came into the season with depth and we’ve got guys who can take up their roles,” Jackson said. “Coaches are just trying to find the right combination for this Saturday.”
Jackson added he has no problem taking on a leadership role. “It’s one of those things where I’m going to have to, regardless of whether or not I’m ready,” he said. “I know I need to play big and I know the guys in front of me and behind me will help. We can still come together and play well as a defense.”

people might not like watching the option (dont know why), but the fact is that the option is the most effective offense in all of football except the pros. High Schools and colleges that use the option have a much higher winning percentage over the 150 years of football than teams that dont. Its a fact that Tech will not only win the ACC in the future (if they win there next 2 games maybe this year) but they will win it consistantly and start an old trend again in college football.

After seeing Tech play Thursday night, I watched a lot of games Saturday and all of the offenses looked so boring and predictable. UCLA and Tennessee are perfect examples. That was like watching paint dry when the most exciting thing that happened was a 6 yard run every now and then. It was rush for no gain, rush for no gain, incomplete, incomplete. If we beat BC and VT look out, we’ll be 6-0 going into Death Valley to play Clemson in a huge game. Realistically though, I think we lose Saturday to BC and hopefully get a win in Blacksburg to take the inside track in the Coastal. We can still lose this Saturday and have a shot at the championship though. But it would be nice to get a win Saturday and get some national attention going in to next Saturday’s game on ABC in Blacksburg.

To all of the Georgia fans, go back to your own blog. I bet you are so proud, letting GA Southern ring up 21 on you. THAT IS WHY YOU LOST THE #1 RANKING. I think GA Tech did a great job in the first game. Complete accountability, did you see CPJ going after his guys when they screwed up! The athletes are buying in and they are getting keyed in. I think Tech gets the upset this week, and i see them doing very, very well in the ACC race. And to the few i have seen beating down on Wake Forest, they are a outstanding school and have a great team, and they have one of the smallest schools in the country. it is all about coaching, give me A plus coaching and B talent anyday over A plus talent and B coaching.
Oh yes to the puppies, i suggest you start worrying about Spurrier coming up in two weeks after your second gimme game, here comes loss #1. LSU will be loss #2. And at the end of the season, loss # 3 comes to TECH!

I see Tech beating an undefeated UGA to squash any chances of a National Title. OOooooo, That would suck huh? It would be the worst defeat Georgia ever had. Richt would be fired and the dawgs would be “Back in the cellar again”!
Come on Dawg fans, if that happened, what would be your take on the season?

In regard to the story posing the question can Tech’s offense handle BC’s massive defensive line …. Those big tackles will be run ragged by the option. Unless BC has some speed on the edge, Tech will run wild. PJ is fond of saying, quick will beat big, unless big also happens to be quick. Let them clog up the middle. That will leave the outside open for the option and then Tech will hit them with the play action pass. PJ may throw em a wrinkle with a little bit of mid line option, too, just to keep em off balance.

As much as I wish Tech could exploit this year’s ACC, I must stick to my original prediction from a few weeks ago:
Tech will win three games: Jacksonville State, Gardner-Webb, and Duke …
… and possibly a fourth game, from among Virginia, North Carolina, and Mississippi State …
… but NOT MORE THAN FOUR VICTORIES.
I hope I am wrong. But, let’s build for the future, and get out of the lazy rut of Humanitarian Bowls.

TYO, do you know what my take would be on the season if Tech beat Georgia this year? (It wouldn’t matter if we were undefeated or not). I would strap my ice skates on and go for a trip down to the new ice rink in Hell.

Let’s keep some perspective on the issue of GSU ‘ringing’ up 21 against the Dawgs. Remember it was 38-0 and 45-7 before the late meaningless touchdowns. If GSU and JSU played, who do you think would win? And how many points did JSU get in Atlanta?

some of these week 1 acc losses will not tell us much. teams can bounce back from lousy showings like VT and Clemson showed. first thought is GT can take advantage, but remember our hick-ups will still be coming, so lets be realistic and just stay hopeful. i hate to say it but even with the UT loss at UCLA, the SEC looks as tough as ever. the one good thing from that is the arguement for a playoff could be stronger than ever after this season. acc race - yes it’s wide open, lots of unknowns, but i’m not looking too far down the road and I’m sure Johnson has our Jackets focussed on 1 week at a time! Beat BC, then we’ll go from there.

I’m pretty sure that if JSU and GSU played, JSU would win, but that’s totally irrelevent. GSU only scored against UGA’s back ups, so the points don’t matter. Same goes for JSU. Both are D-1AA teams and don’t give us a guage of either teams ability. Take it for what it is: nothing.

I think this is just one more reason that their should be no preseason polls. It makes no sense to rank teams before they have played. First polls should be out October 1st.

This is not meant as a flame, but a serious question:
When is the last time Georgia Tech beat Boston College?

Never underestimate Paul Johnson, he is an offensive snake in the grass/genius.
Tech will spead out BC’s big boys and run them into the ground. Those big feller’s will be winded early.
It is the Georgia Southern/CPJ/Chris Hatcher way, last Saturday vs UGA Chris Hatcher was asked how many of the water misting fans Georgia Southern needed, the reply was, “none, we are in condition”.

Poor old UGA Dawgs already lost No1 in just a week. Scheduling games with cup cakes has it’s cost. UGA has always done that tp pad their win column, ‘er uh bring back the Richmond Spiders again.
If you are number 1 why are you scheduling “easy games” with so called light weight teams.
If you deserve to be 1st, schedule like it.
Uh oh, here comes Richt’s buddy/owner Darth Visor. LOL!
Spurrier’s SC Cocks are the Bulldog Killers.
LOL! Number 1 lasted til halftime of game 1, LOL! oops, there went that Heismann

HUGE NEWS IN!!!
Georgia: 1-0 Georgia Tech: 1-0 rankings doesn’t mean anything right now Look at the polls on about week 5 and then you can brag about what you’re ranked, don’t say tech sucks because again we have the same record as the DAwwwgs

Holy cow, people! One win over Jacksonville State and there’s talk of an ACC championship run? What’s in the Kool-Aid?
Matt Ryan is gone and so is Chan Gailey. However, the talent gap has not sufficiently closed to make up for a 24-10 spanking (at home). Should be a low scoring affair, but look for BC to pull out a home win.
Clempson and VT were too cocky going in. Look for them to rebound quickly. Look for Tech to be 4-3 after the Clempson game. The season will hinge on the UVA, FSU, UNC, Miami run. We’ll need 3 wins in that run to be bowl qualified (remember we need 7 this year because we play two D-1AA opponents). UVA looks beatable, but unfortunately, we’ve never had success in Chapel Hill and it’s been decades since we beat FSU.
