Nice way to start an era
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Back with some edits …
Not bad, huh? It goes in the books as 41-14 Tech.
First, regarding Michael Johnson, who was not credited with a tackle and was taken to the locker room: dehydration.
Now, let’s make a quick pass at the over-unders I posted earlier today in a prediction sort of blog.
Over-under on Tech fumbles lost (EDIT): two. Tally: two. A push.
Over-under on Tech points: 45 Tally: under, but not by much.
Over-under on JSU points: 13 Tally: over, by a mere one.
Over-under on sacks by Tech: four Tally: Four. Another push.
Over-under on players who enter the game for Tech: 64: Tally: 64. A push.
Over-under on attendance: 41,000: Tally: over (45,076)
Over-under on Tech touchdown passes: two Tally: under (none)
Over-under on No. of Tech rushers with 40 yards or more: four Tally: Dead on. Another push.
Over-under on avg. No. of plays per Tech possession: six Tally: avg. 4.8
I also wrote in a comment to the blog that there would be at least three players with catches for 20 or more yards. There were THREE (Jones, 39; Greg Smith, 30; and Cox 29). Spot on.
In short, I rocked those over-unders pretty hard.
Enough for now. I’m tired.
Matt

Jaybo Shaw had 51 yards rushing per ESPN, so that makes 4 rushers with 40+. Just a tip.

Game was amazing…sitting in the south endzone, it seemed like a running play only got us 2 yards, then I look up at the scoreboard and see that it’s 2nd and 2. We definitely ran this offense better than most people expected for the first game. Jaybo was amazing. very impressed considering it was his first game. Defensive line needs some work…Perilloux got by one too many times. Can’t wait till the BC game

I have seen this as at GSU. This is for real. YOu have an excellent coach who will take this team far… I look for fumbles to be reduced as the season progresses. Isn’t it fun to watch players go onw way and the ball to go another…?

I think this was a good start to the Paul Johnson era but I still think that we have ways to go before we become competitive in ACC. There were times when the Jacksonville defense gave us some problems, not to mention a few stupid fumbles that we lost. Overall I think the offense did good, Dwyer looked awesome, so did Roddy and Nesbitt. I think we’ll be a heck of a team by the end of the season.
I was not too impressed with our offense. I know they were running quick plays but I would have thought that our defense would knock the QB more often and have more sacks and hurries. Morgan Burnett looked great, so did Derrick Morgan.

Good Game Jackets - excellent tune up and confidence builder as you prep for your schedule.
I think you guys got a heck of a great coach and he will make the Jackets a top level ACC team.
Look forward to your visit in Athens - hope both teams have a lot on the line to make the game intense.
By the way - I like the traditional Gold and White Uniforms a lot better - new uniforms are butt ugly - and the the mustrad yellow gold has got to go.

Was at the game tonight. Full House and lots of Buzz in the air (in more ways than one)
Couple of thoughts:
OFFENSE:
We averaged 8 yards a play (that is ALL plays)….VERY GOOD for a “running offense”
If Josh stays healthy, we are really going to have a good year.
Dwyer and Jones are special… you can see that Roddy has learned alot while waiting to get his turn.
Passing was good (Over 50% completion in the post RB era!), but there is room for improvement here.
DEFENSE:
If we stay healthy we are going to dominate the line….
Morgan Burnette is the MAN.
Only had given up 95 yards thru 3 quarters. Only TD’s were on a kickoff return fumble short field and a TD in the last seconds against our depth chart.
Perrilloux and Dupree are big time players that would start at any school in the nation and tech did a good job of containing them. The D was in there so quick, they had to resort to short passes. Perriloux (SEC MVP of the SEC Championship Game) found his grove on some occasion, but mostly found himself running for his life.
Cornerbacks and Defensive Backs were solid. Gave up a couple of plays but will be tested more as the season goes on.
Coach Johnson did not look happy several times in the game…. a lot more animated than Gailey and he is going to chew some tail this week.
Buckle up for BC and VT road games the next 2 weeks. BC’s run defense will be a serious test.
Go Jackets….

I was at the game and was pleasantly surprised. They ran the offense much better than I expected for the first game. I am glad we had a FBS team to start with. I was not as impressed with the SEC Champ MVP. He was a load to take down, but his passing…ehh.
Overall, very pleased. I really didn’t know what to expect this early. However, Buzzed may be a little over zealous. Let’s play BC first.
We should have it down pretty well by thanksgiving though.
Jaybo was impressive. He just looked much more in command than Nesbit. but Nesbit is by far the better athlete. If Nesbit gets his head around this offense…look out.

Quick Stats…..
61 Plays …. 46 rushes….. so yea we ran the ball, but when you average 7.6 yards running the ball alone - who wouldn’t. Almost 500 total yards and 350 Yards on the ground and if we hadn’t pulled out starters on O and D…. we could have 500 on the ground alone.
Jaybo looked nice.
Embry Peeples has some jets… was he the track guy?
Man there were tons of good looking women there tonight… Yea I know, not used to seeing millions of models at an engineering school, but dang… is this the Jaybo Shaw entourage????

Was at the game, and a couple comments. Tech is obviously very disciplined (already), and that is impressive for the “moving parts” offense. Not being that guy, but the officials let the o-line, specifically the tackles, get away with blatant holding all night long, especially on Nesbitt’s long run in the second quarter. Yes, I know holding happens on every play, but it’s usually in the trenches, not out in open space like tech got away with tonight. Anyway, if they continue to get “no calls” on this, this offense will be very difficult to stop. Also, I think it’s fair to say that there will be open competition for the starting placekicker. Blair looked incredibly shaky if not atrocious. All in all, a good first effort, but time will tell how this operation fares against an ACC/SEC defense.

Nice way to start an era? Are you freakin’ kidding me? It was one game against D-1aa Jacksonville State. Please stop blowing sunshine up these Techies’ backsides. You are doing them no favors. They will be throwing things on the field and refusing to attend games as soon as things go south. I’ve seen it too many times. Do not pump them full of false hope.

I know a lot has been made of this offense over the off-season. However, I am not so short-sighted as to forget the ralph friedgen years (sp?), This is not so different an offense as he ran. Get 8 yards on 1st/2d down and then thrown a quick out for the first down. Or throw two 5 yard outs or 1 10 yard strike across the middle to get the first down. it is the fear of the run that sets all of this up. With Joe Hamilton, we ran the option ALOT. We ran the receiver reverse, etc. Guess what, it was really efficient and effective. The only reason people are making a big deal about it is because it is unconventional at this point in college football (remember Oklahoma was a force when Friedgen began here) and as much as dog fans hate to admit it this was a big hire this year. Everyone sit back and enjoy the ride as the Johnson train runs through the season. This is going to be fun (win or lose),,,

C’mon everybody. I just got back from the game. Perilloux was running for his life. JSU scored two garbage touchdowns against third stringers and we scored early and often. This team is for real. The sky is the limit. Nesbitt and Dwyer are beasts, just as advertised, and the defensive line is sick. We just faced the best QB we will face all year and he barely mangaged 100 yards through 3 quarters.

True but the offenses are VERY different. With Lil Joe we ran a read option out of the shotgun more like West Virginia runs now. We did some traditional pitch option but not as much. Oklahoma was all traditional option football….2 H-backs and 1 Fullback. They probably had 8 plays in the whole playbook and 6 of them were passes. The two rushing plays were the same only left and right….you just didn’t know who was going to end up with the ball.

Jaybo did not look great, did you watch the same game I did? Nesbitt is a monster and is probably the best QB we’ve had since Godsey. Nesbitt and Dwyer were the two top prospects coming out of high school and Tech has them both. I would hate being a DC trying to plan for this offense

Everything you need to know about CPJ was on display the last 30 seconds of the first half.
Go to take a knee to end the half. Fumble (badly-WTF?), and recover. CPJ calls a TO to stop the clock, instead of letting it wind down to end the half. CPJ then makes the offense finish the half WITHOUT taking another knee.
Would Chan have done this? Not no, but HELL NO! Way to go Mr. Johnson!
Something tells me that those who committed the stupid fumbles and personal fouls won’t be doing them again any time soon….one way or another.
We know what’s going to be in CPJ’s lunch pail Monday…Yellow Jacket @$$.

Jax State or not, everyone expected this team to fumble away every play and only score 20 pts or less. They key here is they are disciplined and Johnson is coaching them every step of the way. They’ll get alot better before they get worse. Yes, we’ll probably get thumped here and there this year but we will be improving each game and Johnson is for REAL folks. Dual threat QB’s and a defense that can play w/ anyone in the country is not a bad option. 5 more wins and we’re bowl bound in his first year. YES, I SAID IT AND I”LL SAY IT AGAIN. Tech plays in its last “who cares” bowl this year and its to the big stadiums come 09 and 2010. sitting here in Raleigh puking up that espn 360 garbage I had to ingest and wishing I was there. If you keep the attendance up, the bashing to a minimum, this team will respond w/ pay offs galore. But don’t expect to beat UGA this year. Maybe next but not this year. Just being realistic unless Stafford or Moreno go down w/ injuries. But look out UGA b/c deep down, you know we are getting better and a solid foundation is being set for a renewed rivalry that you all will sure welcome.

Par for the course for Paul Johnson. Another W for his offense. Get used to it. There will be ups and downs this year and only ups in the forthcoming years. I watched it at GA Southern and again at Navy. This program won’t be any different. I talked to Va tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster recently and he’s not looking forward to getting ready for this offense. Last time he had to defend it against Navy, they were down at halftime (after having two weeks to prepare) before they wore Navy down with their depth. It should be an interesting season for sure.

Just a few thoughts:
First, how is 45,000 out of 55,000 people a full house? I thought you Bugs were supposed to be good at math?
Second, those are now the ugliest damn uniforms in college football. You have somehow managed to jump over the two Oregon teams and some other horrendous pairings to become the ugliest-clad team in football.
Mustard Yella? Really? I’m sorry, but that’s YELLOW, and a horrid shade of yella at that. That isn’t gold. Sorry, gold is what y’all used to have on your helmets. Gold is what Notre Lame and San Francisco have.
I also don’t believe Pittsburgh and Green Bay wear gold, no matter how much they say they do. It’s yellow. Just like your yellow. Except this new Bug Yella has got to be the ugliest yella in the world, like Tennessee Orange is the ugliest orange in the world.
Putrid.
Third… to the guy who thinks Bugland is playing in Miami as a “reality check” if they win their first three games this year: Dude, did you drink too many free cokes tonight or something? Because I think the sUGAr is affecting your brain!
Good win beating up on the cupcake, Bugs. Methinks, though, y’all will be buzzing a different tune in the coming weeks, even against y’all’s weak-a$$ AwfulCC in-conference schedule.
I wonder how long it’ll be until we hear the “Fire Paul Johnson” rants from Bugland.
I’m guessing after getting whacked by Clemson. But maybe most of y’all will hold out until being humiliated by Georgia in the Classic City, Between the Hedges in College Football’s most beautiful stadium.
Here’s hoping y’all actually have a decent season so when we beat y’all for the EIGHTH time in a row, it’ll actually mean something, like it did in 2006. Y’all remember that, right? We shut your boy, Calvin Johnson down like we always did. Reggie curled up into a ball and starting uttering incoherent statements, dog.
Yeah, I’m hoping it’s better than that.

My first blog didn’t go through, but it went something like this…
Bob Sacamano is one of those tools who thought Ryan Perri-wikle would lead JSU to a victory over the Jackets b/c he played in the SEC. Ole Perri-winkle looked really good last night wouldn’t you say, Bob? That was the SEC MVP getting his butt kicked by a sorry ACC D.
Yeah, I know you’re worried, as you should be. I mean this was Tech’s 1st game and all, and they still managed 500 yards & 40+ points. Not bad considering all this offense will do, being that they stay healthy, is get better; MUCH BETTER. It’s alos after 2 in AM, and you’re a GA fan on a Tech blog. Yep, your already starting to worry.

This game was essentially a scrimmage so I will remain even keeled on this. We looked pretty good on both sides of the ball, at times. There is a lot of work to be done, closing down penetration of the A gap, special teams, and coverage by the corners. This game was nothing other than a good start.
What was the best thing about last night, observing the diffeence between Paul Johnson and Chan Gailey.
By the way, the best looking jersey is the Blue version of the current style. It would even look good with mustard.

Do I need to remind everyone that GT had a better opener last year against Notre Dame and that didn’t exactly lead to fame and fortune. This was Jacksonville State afterall. Tech will have to win 8 to get an invite. I don’t see it happening. Oh and watch out for Gardner-Webb down the road who got killed by the powerhouse Tennesse Tech last night. All in all a fun night at The Flats. It’s nice to know that this offense will improve on a weekly basis. Yes, it was a 1-AA team, but anyone who has closely followed Tech knows that there has been significant improvement in execution and there’s still a lot wrinkles to iron out. Nice to see it overwhelm so early in the process. When all the kinks are out, it’s going to really roll and the doubters will be eating their words.
My quick views on the game: -Nice to see a head coach that actually coaches. We haven’t seen that at The Flats in a while. -Nesbitt, while still a little shaky at times, is way ahead of where he was in the spring.
-Turnovers did not come in bushels as all the naysayers were predicting and hoping. -This offense is a very real threat when throwing the football also. -Defense was solid even without Michael Johnson for most of the game. -The field goal unit needs LOTS of work. This was ugliest aspect of the game for GT. -Who cares about the uniforms ? If you want style, get you some binoculars and get some close ups of the dance team at halftime like I did…. Son of a B@#ch …. HOT !
Go Jackets ! Beat BC and improve a little more !

Did you walk over to watch the game?? I can tell you are a midtown resident by how affected you are by the uniforms. Lots of bitterness. Just worry about the Eagles this weekend, see if the messiah Stafford can actually score a touchdown on SoCar and maybe you will have a chance to drag out a Vandy logo to stomp after a big win. Forget what happened on the field last night….
The real intel you can take from it is:
A) Coach Johnson knows how to coach and run a game with intensity…
B) He is going to chew some @ss this year…
C) He will make them execute better each week…
These are the intangibles that Gailey and his ilk could not do. Thus, GT will be competitive, win or lose.
And friends, that is what will worry Richt.

THE ACC SUCKS….That is why South Carolina thumped NC State. You guys beat a very good high school team with your high school offense. This will not work when you guys have to play the big boys, you will get killed. Good win for a program like Tech, but it would mean nothing for a top program. You guys will always be just a little bit better than most high school programs…face it you will always be our little brother that we kick around. Please celebrate your win but your reality check is coming very very soon. As everybody will agree with me TO HELL WITH GEORGIA TECH HIGH

I’m a Navy guy. I hated seeing Johnson go. I will be following the tech season this year along with other Navy fans. I can’t wait to see this offense executed with NFL bound players.
I bet Johnson wants payback against BC for the 2006 Meineke Car Care Bowl. Navy just had to run out the clock for the win but they fumbled the ball away and BC scored in the final seconds and won by a point.
BC finished in the top 25 that year. Keep in mind that Johnson was knocking on the door of the top 25 with Navy. Can’t wait to see what he does at GT.
Look out BC, He’s coming for you.

Don’t really care who the opponent was and what the final tally was, what i care about was the difference in the coaching.
There was NO hesitation about what to do on 4th and short, or 4th and 3. There was no hesitation on what plays to run and what we wanted to do on both sides of the ball. Not once did we go to the line and call a timeout because we weren’t sure what play to run.
This is a football coach who knows what he’s doing. We are in good hands and it’s going to be fun watching this team improve week to week.

The AP story was more complete than Winklejohn, who for some reason focused on Tech players getting yelled at by Johnson. Anyway, the 349 yards rushing against JSU was the most since they played Johnson’s 2002 GSU team which ran for 493. Like I wrote repeatedly when (3-8) Brian Van “Stupid” Gorder went to Ga. Southern and scrapped the old offense – what’s wrong with 330 yards a game and 30 + points a game? The answer is – nothing. Enjoy it Tech fans. Your program has just gotten a lot better.

Coach P.J. is the right guy at the right place at the right time.
The team has a long way to go. Our O line is weak (I wonder if John Davis could lend a hand he is available here in Atl)and our LBs are real inexperienced. (after playing OLB for 4 yrs at the flats) It showed all night.
JSU’s fist team is slower and smaller than our second team so the parctice we watched last night is no indication of our season ahead.
We did see an incredible turn around in accountability and concentration. There is no doubt that by the end of the season we will be a good team. I am equally certain that in a couple years with the correct match of C.P.J.’s recruits we will be back and a force that must be taken very serious.
All in all I am happy to Tech moving in the right direction. Thanks Dan for the right coach!

I don’t look at the score, but at the coach. He was very unhappy with the play of his team in general, and that shows me he’ll make no excuses for loses and bad wins against easy opponents. His long term expectations are to put Tech in the same position in the ACC that UGA has established in the SEC, such as to play in conference championships, and be in major bowls. I’m not comparing the two conferences, just the aspirations.

LSU must really hate having to send him packing-just a stud. Did anyone see the recievers running wild in the defensive secondary? Oh, the potential! Dadgum - this isn’t 1992 anymore. You can hardly claim Miami (5-7 last year) and F$U (7-6) last year as proof of your “strength” of schedule. With those records they would be the doormats of the SEC. Clemson? Nothing more than Georgia in the Jim Donnan era at best. BC? Lost Matt Ryan, now they’ll undoubtedly suck (it was fun watching him carve tech a new one, though). VT? Decent, but still couldn’t beat Georgia’s worst team in ten years in 2006 (then again, neither could Tech). Did you really call UNC a good team? Based on what? Their record from last year? Now your just grasping for straws. By my calculations, the only team worth a sh!t on your schedule happens to be that University that so many of you deride due to your pen!s envy. Barnacle Bull S,
Get off our blog you redneck. Go back to the trailer park, put on the wife beater, and hit the crack pipe. I believe Dadgum was referring to a comment someone made about a “weak in conference schedule.” So let me translate for your dumb arrss- that would be the teams in the ACC we play compared to the other ACC teams. So to reiterate, his comment was intended for the ACC. So go back to the SEC blogs and talk about Herschel or Stafford or Moreno’s “sure thing” Heisman trophy. You guys have won more preseason National Championships than anybody. And you really look dumb talking trash this early leading up to a Georgia Southern mismatch. All this title talk with as young of an offensive line.. hmm. Keep talking about last year and that big win over the Rainbows. But thats what happens when you’re not even the SEC runner up. Good luck selling your food stamps for Budweiser this weekend, moron.

Got any other insults you want to hurl from behind your little keyboard?
Oh, by the way, it wasn’t just the Rainbows we plastered last year with a comparably young offensive line. It was Alabama, Florida, and Auburn… as well as that dump of a technical school in the Atlanta ghetto.

Barnacle Bull - what happens when you’re “not even” the SEC runner up is… you play in a BCS Sugar Bowl, receive a $4 million payday, kick the ever living sh!t out of the only undefeated team in the country (how many tech fans on this blog predicted Hawaii would beat Georgia?), and finish the year ranked #2 in the country. But tech know all about playing in BCS bowls, right? Oh, well, nevermind then.

Some things never change regarding the turds that support the football factory in Athens. So folks are calling Athens the “Classic City” now. Hmmmm, very indeed. I’m still partial to “Cesspool of the South”.
AT any rate, good start to a new era of Georgia Tech football. Gives the fan base something to talk about, as well as the enemy. It’s a good thing when so many people are talking about the program. Keep up the good work all. You know things are going bad when the “Cesspool Supporters” aren’t yapping on a GT site.
Regarding the “mustard yellow” that people are mentioning….another talking point for lots of folks. Anything to stand out and be noticed.

Remember that Chan Gailey won his first game too for Tech, against Clemson I think.

Paul Johnson lasts 5 years and wins 35 games.

Then the GTAA gives in to the Tech fans’ histerical call for a coaching change.
Unless its a Tech NCAA football probation due to another instance of Larry New interference with the GTAA decision making.

It was good to see a coach on the sidelines that didn’t look like he was on antidepressant drugs. Football is a wide awake game that takes an alert head coach and assistant coaches. That is why the burn out is so great. This is the first time CPJ has been to the bigs and he has been around for years. It makes you wonder how much bs the athlete departments buy from a Curry type coach that looks the part but hasn’t got that awareness or maybe the football IQ of a CPJ. I think we pick coaches sometimes like they were politicians, which most of the good ones are anything but. In CPJ there is a nice guy, but his resume didn’t have the playing experience much like O’Leary. The press fried Alabama for their choice because he was forced to lie about his intentions but Saturday that money looked well spent and he could tell all the lies he wanted as long as the reality of winning is there. Spurrier takes all the media’s tricks and throws them back into their faces, I bet he never pretended to like a Christmas present, probably doesn’t like Christmas but he makes the reporter work which puts him on that list of people politically incorrect. Point is if you never pick up a paper or listen to filtered information this stuff makes a lot more sense.
