Game day arriveth!

It only seems like it’s been over five years since Georgia Tech last played a football game. Really, it’s been under eight months.

Over-under on Tech fumbles lost (EDIT): two.

Over-under on Tech points: 45

Over-under on JSU points: 13

Over-under on sacks by Tech: four

Over-under on players who enter the game for Tech: 64

Over-under on attendance: 41,000

Over-under on Tech touchdown passes: two

Over-under on No. of Tech rushers with 40 yards or more: four

Over-under on avg. No. of plays per Tech possession: six

I have a hunch the pace tonight will be what catches the most attention from fans, especially those who didn’t attend scrimmages. Sure, the plays will look different, but it will be impossible to miss the speed with which the Yellow Jackets run plays in and execute them.

My picks for stars in advance: Michael Johnson, Derrick Morgan and Kyle Jackson on defense; Jonathan Dwyer and Roddy Jones on offense.

Tech’s new offense may appear complicated, but coach Paul Johnson said, “There will be five or six base plays we’ll run every game, and we’ll add a wrinkle or two off of them. If they come up with some sort of [defensive] concoction, we’ll run the plays that work good against that.”

Tech will face a 3-4 defensive alignment, although the Gamecocks will mix fronts. JSU has old-school inside linebackers, at least size-wise, in Antonio Bonner (6-feet-2, 245 pounds) and Morrell Jones (6-0, 235).

The player to watch is usually outside linebacker Marquise Elston, a 6-foot, 220-pound senior tabbed pre-season All-OVC. He had 42 tackles and three sacks last season. Fellow outside linebacker Brenton Davenport is 6-2, 240.

Safety Carnell Clark is the fastest player for the Gamecocks, helping anchor a secondary in which every player is at least 6 feet tall.

That should keep you all busy for a while.

Matt

Sounds like JSU should be able to load the box pretty good with guys like that. They’ve got nothing to lose. If they can create some turnovers this could be interesting. And it will be interesting to see if JSU can provide any protection for Perriloux. If so, look out!! Perriloux faced tougher defenses in practice at LSU than he will face today. If he has any time at all he’s going to be a factor. You can bet on it.

Tech wins but I think 45-13 prediction is a tad optimistic all things considered.

If JSU loads the box, and Tech can’t block ‘em, Johnson will throw over them. There will be at least three pass plays tonight of 20-plus yards for Tech.

Perrilloux also had better protection at LSU, and threw to better receivers, than what he’ll be working with tonight.

This will be a fun night. That’s some size on JSU’s linebackers. But I still think Dwyer will steamroll them several times. Just can’t wait to see this new offense in action. Speed and misdirection usually equals success. And with Tech’s d-line, Perriwinkle will be seeing a lot of green at BDS tonight.

I agree with Winklejohn. The real matchup problem for Jax St will be out in the open field, with GT’s WRs Demaryius Thomas (remember he is a physical specimen and makes circus catches very well) and Tyler Melton and the speedy A-backs like Roddy Jones and Greg Smith (also a pretty good receiver). And since everybody in the USA will be expecting a run every play, these guys will be open and all them can separate, especially in single coverage which is what will result from all the focus on stopping the option running plays. Anyone who’s played NCAA football on Xbox knows the best play is the fake option pass play…the WR is always 5-10 yards past his man. TD every time my friends.

Perrilloux is not going to somehow will this crappy second rate team to beat a BCS school or even make it close. It doesn’t matter that this is the OBS’s first time out of the garage or the first game without Tenuta in 7 years. The defense will be more balanced and actually try to cover somebody this year instead of selling out every play. And with the talent up front, they’ll still get adequate pressure to mess things up. Letting those guys loose up front will produce dividends for GT’s defense…you watch and see!!! And the attitude of Paul Johnson will not allow this offense to tank (a la Chan Gailey’s conservative quit style).

Ramblin Wrecker - thank you for nerding out all over this blog. “Anybody who’s played football on XBOX…”? Um, okay, how about anybody who’s played real football? That’s the problem with you dweebs, you think that because the option works on some video game that it will work against a nasty SEC defense. Keep dreaming morons, your butt-ugly coach is no savior. He’s just a redneck hillbilly with a silly offense (and a penchant for conjugating verbs incorrectly) that won’t fool anybody. God, just quit, you embarrass youself.

Should that fumbles o/u be “fumbles lost”?? I guarantee there will be 4 or more fumbles. The real o/u question is, how many fumbles do we lose to Jax State?

Some important factors about GT’s season CONTINUE to be overlooked.

Does any GT fan not believe GT will be SIGNIFICANTLY better than 2007 in EVERY SINGLE ASPECT??

One of THE MOST important considerations that has been TOTALLY overlooked is GT’s ACC-Coastal division schedule. Even if GT loses ALL other games, if GT takes care of business in ACC-Coastal play, GT will STILL go to the ACC title game. THAT’S A FACT!!

So, just consider GT’s Coastal schedule:

VT (Sept 13) Does anybody SERIOUSLY still believe VT will be like 2007 VT team? VT is gonna be just plain AWFUL in 2008. Watch for ECU to upset VT this Saturday. GT is gonna SHOCK everyone(but me) by easily beating VT on Sept 13th.

Duke(Oct 4) (Days since VT game: 20) Cutcliffe will make Duke better in 2008, but they won’t beat GT. Period.

UVA (Oct 25) (Days since Duke game: 20) UVA will be a mess in 2007. Very poor GT play in 2007, and GT still almost won in Charlottesville)

UNC (Nov 8) (Days since UVA game: 13) UNC will be better in 2008. GT played truly awful in 2007 including 4 fumbles, and STILL won the game. UNC wont beat GT in 2008.

Miami(Nov 20) Days since UNC game: 11) Again, very poor GT play in 2007, and GT still won)

So, notice there is a HUUUUUGE time gap between Sept 13th VT game, (forget Duke on Oct 4) and the UVA game on Oct 25th.

FOLKS, THAT’S 6 WEEKS from the VT game, and 8 weeks from GT’s first game tonight. GT HAS 2 FULL MONTHS OF PLAYING TIME BEFORE WE EVEN GET TO THE HEART OF THE COASTAL SCEHDULE !!!!! Are you NOW starting to get the picture????

I of course want GT to win’em all. But, if they don’t, just look at where the GT ACC-Coastal play leads. I’m telling you: GT is gonna play for the ACC Title, with the Gator Bowl a LOCK, and maybe even the Orange Bowl, if it all goes REALLY well.

Remember, a weaker GT team beat Clemson last year. Clemson has mostly same players back, except O-Line, and GT will be much much better this year. Are you beginning to see the possibilities??

There are many reasons to believe GT is weaker than last year, including but not limited to the total loss of any experience outside the D-line. We have so many freshmen and sophomore starters that our games would probably have been filled with mistakes even if we were not installing a completely new offense that requires exquisite execution.

OTOH, I expect us to keep getting a lot better as the year progresses, and the kinks get worked out.

So it has come down to this at Tech:

Playing a Thursday night game in Bobbie Dudd Stadium at Histeric Grunt Field against Jacksonville State that is NOT even on tv.

Just because the Alabama - Clemson game is scheduled for Saturday in Atlanta in a sold out Georgia Dome and on national television and Tech does not want to be shown up in their own town.

And how many people will really show up for Tech tonight? I’m guessing 23,000….maybe.

Maybe we will schedule a game every year in the Georgia Dome on a weekend Tech has a home game. FSU next year would be fun.

My my, how far Tech has fallen since 1966 when LBJ was President and gas was 43 cents a gallon.

Oh yeah, Roll Tide.

Mr. Johnson’s high school offense will fail miserably against a well-disciplined athletic defense. Those are two traits Georgia’s defensive unit possesses. The Johnson era will be identical to the Gailey era, win/loss wise. You will get several clever/smart arse remarks from a Johnson press conference, but no more. Blue Astroturf and 7 win season are tech’s future, like it or not.

By George p Burdell

August 28, 2008 5:27 PM | Link to this

Mr. Johnson has won at every level and his time here will be no different. The athletic caliber he will have at Tech far surpasses those he had during his stint with the Naval Academy.Just be ready for the fall to come to you versus Central Michigan UGAys.

By Heath

Right George, and the opposing defenses won’t be any more athletic either, right? I mean, Georgia’s athletes are about on par with Delawares. Oh, almost forgot, Johnson lost to Delaware when he was at Navy. I’ll try to think of a better example.

How am I calling myself a loser? I am not a Tech fan, thank goodness. Thus, no need for me to be at the game.
