Depth charts! Get GT depth charts here!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just kidding.
Unlike my colleague in Athens, I don’t know how to imbed links or I’d post one to the new Tech depth chart here. It’s on the school’s website, ramblinreck.com. I just know those of you who really care will manage to find a working link somewhere.
(Editorial assistance: PDF Depth Chart)
Oh wait … looky there. Happy, happy.
Depending on your criteria for surprise, there are few to nearly none, and there are a few items that make little or no sense. We were told it can change by the hour, which was like saying, “This is just so you’ll stop bugging me, not to be interpreted as gospel.”
I’ll say this, though, even though we all know youth will be the buzzword (sorry) for the Jackets this season, seeing that depth chart really pounds it home.
When you look at the offensive skill positions (QB, B-back, two A-back and two WR spots) and see just two upperclassmen listed among those 18 spots, and then note that neither (A-backs Greg Smith and Jonathan Malone, both juniors) are listed as starters, well, that’s an eye-opener.
Altogether, there are just eight of 24 upper classmen listed as starters, and seven of those eight are on the O- and D-lines (Gardner, LG A.J. Smith, C Dan Voss, DTs Walker and Richard and DE Michael Johnson; the other is CB Jahi Word-Daniel). PK is sophomore Scott Blair, and P for now is R.-soph. Chandler Anderson.
The QB depth goes Nesbitt-Shaw-Dykes, which should surprise nobody.
Oddities:
Sr. Andrew Smith is not listed among the top six A-backs. That can’t be right, can it? Unless he’s changed positions and I’m not aware of it.
Sophomore Preston Lyons as the No. 3 B-back. Preston’s been an A-back to my eye, and he is not eligible this season. The former Marist star transferred from Colgate and has to sit out. The backup B-back behind Dwyer is Quincy Kelly, who also has worked a little at A-back. No Richard Watson.
OK, maybe it’s not odd, but five of the six WRs listed are freshmen, including projected starter Tyler Melton, or redshirt freshmen. Sophomore Demaryius Thomas, a returning starter, is the only non-frosh. Others in the mix for now are R.-Fr. walk-ons R.B. Clyburn and Zach Fisher, and Fr. Daniel McKayhan and Quentin Sims. No sign of Correy Earls, who began camp as a starter but hasn’t practiced since day three (hamstring).
Little surprised to see A.J. Smith as the No. 1 LG rather than Jason Hill (who’s No. 2 RG). Smith’s missed quite a bit of practice time.
No surprises on defense, although Soph. Mario Edwards is listed as the No. 1 FS even though he’s been working reserves, even scout team, the past two practices. Maybe they’re just messing with his mind, checking out how he’ll handle it.
In sum, young, young and younger.
There will be changes.

Injured players were listed as “Currently Out” and not included in the depth chart for each position. This list explains your comments and confusion regarding Earls and Watson.
I am ready for some football; I sure hope the GT players and coaches are ready as well. Go TECH!!!!

Except that even before hurt, Watson wasn’t repping much. And on the subject of injured players, A.J.’s been down most of the week, and he’s listed as a No. 1.
The Earls situation is not hard to figure out. He hasn’t practiced in two weeks.

Is this the same Matthew Stafford that made your vaunted defense look like a confused, helpless, and hapless, bunch of little girls as a clueless true freshman? The same Matthew Stafford that took it all away from you in less than 2 minutes? The same Matthew Stafford that put the CHOKE collar on your D AGAIN? The same Matthew Stafford that keeps stickin it in you and breaking it off? (no pun intended) The same Matthew Stafford that will most likely finish his career at UGA undefeated against you girls? Same guy?

Well gt45, you guys should know. You certainly got a very good look at his azz (something you mites seem obsessed with)last year as he ran down the field right through that vaunted king of choke defense of yours for the game clinching TD last year. So you tell me gt45. Same guy?

I’m outraged that Paul Reese is not within the three deep depth chart. That’s a big mistake if you ask me. He’s more athletic than both his brothers, he’s fast, and a heck of a football talent.

The bad thing is that Uga is just as young as we are - We need to start recruiting on the same consistant level that they are to be competative. We need to win and win a lot and the recruits and fans will come, otherwise we will remain average. Advertising your team in college football and giving away free food wont get you any fans and is a wast of money - Winning is the cure for all. Win and they will come, lose ,and they go elsewhere.

I’m curious to know Tech fans’ insight to season ticket sales thus far being below last year’s. I would have thought the excitement brought by PJ would at least bring near sell out crowds. I think Tech will be successful in 3 years and might have a good record this year since the ACC is down. By the time Tech plays us (GA) their offense most likely will be running much more smoothly than the early games. Tech’s defense should be solid. Is it just the skepticism of the new offense and the growing pain transition expected from a new coaching staff?

Hey Winklejohn,
Maybe you’ve covered this and I just missed it. What happened to Jamal Evans, RB?
And have you asked why a heavy fullback like Lucas Cox is working at one of the #1 A-Back spots? I thought that A-Backs were supposed to be fast and be good receivers? Not that Cox isn’t a good player, I just wonder why a kid like Marcus Wright (who I’ve seen take it to the house on videos) isn’t even on the 3-deep for either A-Back spot.

You guys, didn’t your mothers tell you if you don’t have something nice to say…Can we talk football around here-like how Tech is going to wipe the floor with your sorry, mangey, hairless arses this year? My best guess is most of your Mommies wouldn’t let her babies play football, anyway, so you don’t know enough to carry on a sensible converstation about football to begin with.

Amazing how a legit football article becomes a p** match on sexual orientation, intellect, etc. It’s almost a waste to read these blogs. The average poster age must be 13-18, avg IQ 80,maturity level -1st or 2nd grade. Would all of you a***** please post some info or legit opinion on the subject matter or go back to either f—-king your sister or j—king off with your slide rule. This goes to both sets of so-called football fans——you are an embarrasment to UGA and GT

Gentlemen,
GT is ranked at #25 in the Playboy College Football. Forget the ESPN, USATODAY, and Coaches Poll, THIS is the poll that counts. Can I get an AMEN? Perhaps this rating is based on the number of subscriptions per student body member. However, it might actually be based on the number of convictions and/or arrests per football team member. Of course, that would mean the UGA would be ranked even higher.

Erk, the ticket sales issue is complex. The big factors I attribute it to as a current Tech student are as follows:
The decline of the Gailey era lost us a lot of fans that now are skeptical the Tech football can be exciting whether the Jackets win or lose
Georgia is up, so a ton of the flip-flopping Atlanta suburban population has hopped on the red and black bandwagon for the forseeable future (not that they can get tickets to GU games, but that they probably won’t care about Tech while they’re watching the Dawgs)
-and probably the biggest factor…the home schedule is really lame compared to previous years (“clean, old fashioned hate” is played in Athens this year, and other biggies are on the road)
To fix it, Tech just needs to win more games, and slowly the local community will be curious about the Jackets again . Soon enough the preseason magazines will have us in the top ten in a year when we play Georgia in Atlanta along with some other big home games, and all of that should be the recipe for sell out crowds. If we win or are at least close enough to be exciting in front of big crowds we build that fan base on a more permanent basis. Thus goes the rebuilding…for a lot of teams, not just Tech.

If that were the case Tech would be #1 Old GT Nut. Felony drug trafficking, rape, and the triple bonus points if a member of the Athletic Staff is involved (Joe Hamilton’s trifecta) would assure the #1 ranking and the inside track to the mythical NC.

Ramblin’ Wrecker,
Jamaal Evans has been outta school for a couple months. Yes, that was covered at the time. Bottom line reason: unclear. No official reasons were given, and I’m not going to go into the two reasons most frequently given in the rumor mill because I haven’t been able to substantiate either one.
Cox began summer as a B-back, and may end up there. Or he may stay put. No, he’s not a burner, but he blocks better than most of the A-backs, and the A-backs are asked to block a pretty fair amount on wide running plays.
Hands? His appear decent. Marcus Wright had absolute fits early in camp both catching the ball and holding onto it. And at his smaller size, he’s not much of a threat as a blocker, at least not yet. Those are some pretty big strikes against him.
Yes, he’s fast, but if he can’t hang onto the ball …
A redshirt will do wonders for that guy.
Some of the A-back personnel will change, I think. Cox, and even Quincy Kelly for a while, began working there when the position was ravaged by injuries to Greg Smith, Roddy Jones, Andrew Smith (dunno why he’s not listed now) and Embry Peeples all at the same time.

One of those offenses that toughness is the main virtue, a lot of cast offs might do well here. The Hope scholarship with walk-ons might work better with this kind of team than with Georgia and its thoroughbreds. What makes those spring sports teams so good might start making Tech football a little better too. You are going to be very tired when you finish playing Tech this year and probably beat up.

If you’re only gonna have 8 upperclassmen starting, the lines should be where you want them.
In 2010 this DC would have Tech returning about 20 starters, barring attrition. Plus both kickers. Wow.
