Keep up if you can

Let’s re-cast this now that it appears Josh Nesbitt’s shoulder injury in this morning’s practice is but a bruise (see story on ajc.com).

Plus, some update on the D.J. Donley transfer. It may not happen, and I’m not saying that he’ll end up back at Tech (or that he won’t).

The story about Donley is in the editing process now. Hopefully, it will be on-line soon. But Purdue coach Joe Tiller may have jumped the gun yesterday in suggesting that Tech was holding up the transfer. Stay tuned, and check Tiller’s comments below.

Now, back to regularly-scheduled blogging …

  • If you’re a fan, your initial reaction to opening up with Jacksonville State might not be euphoria, nor that it’s on a Thursday, or the fact that Clemson and Alabama will play their opening day game two days later in the Georgia Dome, right?

  • Then again, a night game to start pretty much guarantees it won’t be 101 degrees, which is a very good thing, right?

  • And playing on the road will be no picnic the next two weeks for the Yellow Jackets (at B.C. and at Virginia Tech), but it’s a good thing for you that you won’t be sitting in Bobby Dodd Stadium on those two dates, guaranteeing you won’t roast in 99 and 96-degree temperatures. The first day home game will be Sept. 20. That’s a good thing, too, right?

  • I was surprised to find this last night on Rivals.com: Tiller was asked about the delay.

“He has to get his transcript cleared from Georgia Tech and they’re dragging their feet,” Tiller said. “That’s out of our hands and probably out of the kid’s hands, too.

“Our experience on that is that it’s Georgia Tech’s prerogative and they can submit when they feel like submitting, as long as it’s before their first day of class.”

All things considered no one should be ashamed of opening with Jacksonville State. Especially with a new coach. Hell, we opened the last 3 seasons with Notre Dame, @Notre Dame, and @Auburn. I am disappointed in the Gardner-Webb game. I thought DRad could have done better on that, but we did get scr?wed by the Army on that. Everybody seems to play at least one patsy a year.

But I was surprised to find this last night on Rivals.com: [Purdue] coach Joe Tiller was asked Tuesday about the delay.

“He has to get his transcript cleared from Georgia Tech and they’re dragging their feet,” Tiller said. “That’s out of our hands and probably out of the kid’s hands, too.

Could it be that his transcript has to be cleaned up before it comes to light that he has been ineligible? Maybe the NCAA should take a look to see if there is some “creative course scheduling” going on AGAIN.

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!

GT76, you, nor any GT fans should feel bad about your opening opponent, or Gardner-Webb for that matter. It’s a common practice and I would probably do it as well if I were a coach. You always run the risk of losing (Michigan to App St) but it’s particularly important for GT to start a little easier since you have a new coach and offense. I think GT may do better than many project. Good luck, except for when you play UGA.

You’re right GT76. Especially since Tech is good enough to actually lose that game. There are no sure things this year with the potential for all the turnovers. That transfer QB from LSU just might light our secondary up like a Christmas tree too. But I think the #80 team in the nation could certainly upset Jax St.

Note to ugablows…The real embarassment to Tech fans was having Chan Gailey as coach for the last 6 years. And pathetic suckups like you that tolerated it without speaking up were part of the problem. I repeat, Chan Gailey is the worst coach in Tech history. Thank God and Greyhound that he is gone…even if suckups like ugablows still deserve him.

DB,

That has to be one of the stupidest things posted on here in a long time. First, DJ was a true freshman last year (i.e. there’s no way he couldn’t have been eligible due to course work since it was his first semester). If he wasn’t doing the work, then it wouldn’t have been a problem that needed covering up until this year (i.e. not GT’s problem now, so no reason to doctor the transcripts).

With GT’s d-line talent and depth, we should eat Perriloser alive w/o even blitzing. The rest of the Tech D can drop back into coverage if need be.

Definitely a good thing to start off easy. Hey, UGA has been playing cupcakes for openers forever, so why not Tech to do so for a change?

You can bet if UGA was starting of with an Alabama, Clemson etc. as opposed to GA Southern, all of these guys who were arrested during the offseason would not be suspended. These problems would have been taken care of “in house” as Richt says. You would have heard some BS like “I think his attitude is in the right place and we feel like a second chance is in order”. So the early season weak sisters Georgia usually schedules serve 2 purposes: 1. Get a couple of easy wins. 2. Wiggle room for supsensions with no chance of risking a loss in the process. (I know UGA scheduled Oklahoma State early last year but that was the exception not the rule)

Carter get used to that. We could be the underdog in every game we play with the exception of Gardner-Webb. Sure it’s a pickem with Jax St. The reasons for that should be obvious. Depending on how far Duke comes under Cutcliffe we could be underdogs there too. There is only one team on our schedule right now, today that we should be favored over.

Sam, you may be right. The only way that would change would be to win two, if not all three, of the first three games. That is a long shot, but not impossible. I just know, with this coach, the kids will fight every play, and not take a play or a series or a quarter off, like some recently. As far as Donnelly goes, if he truly wants to leave, I doubt the admisistration would be holding up the process. It didn’t with any of the other boys that left the last few months.

Thursday Night, the dawn of a new era, under the lights, in a glorified scrimmage…the Wreck, the fight song, the new unis…pack a flask, show up and enjoy. No disgrace in opening with a soft team to let you play at game speed against somebody you are a virtual lock to beat. But the Gardner-Webb game…yeah that’s a shame.

By Matt Winkeljohn

August 13, 2008 1:16 PM | Link to this

Actually, I believe Uzzi sprained an ankle. And Yandell has worked mostly with the second or third teams of late.

If there were a game this Thursday instead of in two weeks, I think the back up left tackle would be Nick Claytor. On the right side (it may end up being the same player backing up both tackle spots, or a guard might end up becoming the backup tackle as few college teams play more than seven O-linemen) might be Austin Barrick.

But it’s early. For example, Cord Howard and A.J. Smith (still out after suffering concussion last Saturday) are in the hunt to start at guard, but played tackle last season. They might, and I stress might, be more likely to slide in at tackle in the event of injury.

But I haven’t seen them work any at tackle yet.

Not enough information to do anything but theorize yet.

Nesbitt, as you know if you read Bill Sanders’ short story, does not appear to be hurt serious.

Paul Johnson acted amused, though, by the semi-hysterical reaction of media (that’s an exaggeration, folks) to his boo-boo.

The Donley situation is complicated. Obviously, D.J. was not eligible to transfer to Purdue at the time the decision was made in April, or he would not have returned to Tech for summer classes.

Whether he did enough in summer classes to become eligible to transfer remains an open-ended question.

I’ll try to get more information, but there is not a fountain of it readily available on him.

Matt: I appreciate the updates. What’s our secondary looking like? Any thoughts on who’s starting at both safety positions and corner positions? Any updates would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

By Matt Winkeljohn

August 13, 2008 2:15 PM | Link to this

Burnett will start at one safety. Transfer Mario Edwards or Dominique Reese at the other. Reese was the starter until Edwards was cleared to play, and he’s been working most with the first unit since.

Freshman Taylor Cooper would be a long shot.

Jahi Word-Daniels at one corner, Mario Butler at the other. He took over for Jarrard Tarrant after Tarrant was charged with rape last month.

Bottom line answer: the secondary looks young because it is, starters (other than Jahi) and backups alike.

Better to hope that vaunted D-line rushes the passer like mad than to count on the secondary to change games on a regular basis.

Be great if Donley ends back up at Tech. As for QB I think Tech’s going to need 5 qb’s on roster who can play and it looks like we have them in some sort of role plus some walkon’s. As Nesbitt said every play you get hit and each QB may bring a different slant to the offense. We now have 6 players who may get their hands on the ball on any given play. This Defense is starting to look pretty good with the front 4, three good lb’s if not more and two excellent safeties and corners evolving.

Maybe the Nesbitt injury is a dark cloud with a silver lining. Jaybo Shaw has the ability to win the Heisman this year if PJ will just go ahead and pull the trigger on giving him the starting QB job. Donley is a VERY talented player. I would like to think there is still an outside chance that he might reconsider staying and playing for GT. Maybe not in 2008 because of missed time and his grades, but if he can get back to school and hit the books, maybe he will be catching balls and scoring touchdowns for GT in 2009. I think all of the nonsense about PJ’s offense being heavy on the running plays and light on the pass plays played a big part in his decision to transfer. He would be a huge asset for our offense if he decides to stay at GT!

I hope he realizes now that GT will be throwing the ball and will probably have great success (many huge gains and touchdowns) because of the offense. Most defenses will sell out to stop the run which will lead to big gains in the passing game; see the results of the scrimmage and look at the records at GSU and Hawai when PJ was the coach. I would like to see Donley playing for GT in 2008, but that does not seem likely at this juncture.

I am from a small town in middle Georgia (similar to Folkston) and I will admit that I really did not like the Atlanta area during my first year at GT either; but I stayed and graduated. I really enjoyed my remaining time at GT and I have GREAT memories. It is safe to say that I am VERY glad I decided to stay at GT. I graduated in December of 1990 which was an excellent year for GT atheletics by the way!!

I can’t believe all the haters that scream for an academic investigation at the first over-spun media version of poor little DJ Donley’s late transcript.

Two things:

1)The punk sucked at school…it wouldn’t be the first time the Tech curriculum (yes, even the Management degree) has given a kid the shaft. Tech fans, let him go.

2)The GT Registrar is ALWAYS late with paperwork! If you’re a GT student worried about academic fowl play in this case, I urge you to go to Tech tower today and request that your transcript be sent to another school’s office. I guarantee you’ll be waiting at least a week…and then you’ll get the email that it’s been SENT. That is IF they remember.

Moral of the story: Donley sounds like he screwed up his own career by failing to work hard enough. Not the first at Tech, and he won’t be the last.

I have been following GT football a long time (36 years) and one thing that GT does best is the “Upset”. That in and of itself make GT a team that is fun to watch.

UGA is a team that wins of course, but GT is the master of the top ten upset. Watch this season to see how many “Football” schools GT knocks off this season.
