Firing wildly, and … Tech’s best five?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
WARNING: CONSIDERABLE CHAN GAILEY BASHING IN COMMENTS BELOW, SOME OF IT NON-SENSIBLE, SOME OF IT SEMI-SALIENT.
Now, back to regularly-scheduled blogging …
Quick hitters …
It wasn’t re-posted on-line, but it made the paper when I spoke with Greg Smith after the p.m. practice about his injury situation (hip pointer).
He said he didn’t talk to his position coach, Jeff Monken, yesterday after Monken told him he needed to practice. “Just stay quiet and listen,” he said. “Just play. It’s all I do. It’s discouraging, but you’ve got to go out here and support your teammates.”
I asked if he smashed his hip. He said, “you could say that.”
I asked if he was second-guessing his move from wide receiver to A-back, and he said, “Nah. It’s just football.” Or something to that effect. Hmm.
• Reader Dan Walker points out that (edited only slightly): Rich Ellerson - best known for devising Arizona’s “Desert Swarm” defense in the 1990s - was defensive coordinator a Hawaii when Paul Johnson was offensive coordinator there. Ellerson is the head coach at I-AA Cal Poly, and last year his team led the nation in total offense. Their offense? The triple option.
Dan also wrote that when Tech hired Paul Johnson away from Navy, Navy hired Joe DuPaix, Cal Poly’s offensive coordinator. Hmm.
• The entire defense, starters, etc., stayed after each practice yesterday for conditioning. Translation: punishment. They ran in place, and did a bunch of up-downs. That’s rough at the end of practice, especially when you practice twice, even if the heat wasn’t so bad yesterday.
The crime? “Loafs,” said DL Elris Anyaibe. Loafs? “Poor effort plays in Saturday’s scrimmage,” he said. Hmm.
• Some Georgia fans love to read this Tech blog, and respond, huh? Hmm.
• Do Tech fans read Georgia blogs and respond in similar numbers? What about per capita?
• The longer I watch, the more I think Tech has a chance to be better than quite a few people think sooner than a lot of people think.
• If coaches bring that secondary and young linebackers up to speed fast, that is.
• As I noted in the paper, Jarrard Tarrant was at practice yesterday. That’s “at” it, not in it. He was in street clothes, or kick-around clothes to be more accurate.
• Best five players on this team, in no order: Andrew Gardner, Michael Johnson, Morgan Burnett, Jonathan Dwyer, Vance Walker.
CHECK BACK LATE AFTERNOON FOR PRACTICE UPDATES.
Matt
P.S. For my two cents, depressed by inflation from the point of Gailey’s hire to the present so as to be worth nothing, well, I don’t have two cents. Hard to have an opinion from my vantage point when I wasn’t on point at the time. Makes sense, right?
I was covering the Falcons when Gailey was hired. I’ve heard from several alums allegedly “in the know” over the years that it was a ham-handed transaction from start to finish. I won’t repeat the stories of others here without checking facts, though. Some of those tales are downright hard to believe.

I like Paul Johnson. He doesn’t tolerate poor effort, even in practice and he regulates that with conditioning. I believe this is the main area that GT has been lacking in and why they were able to lose games to inferior teams just as often as they won games against superior teams. That lack of effort and focus when you think you’re better than the other team leads to loafing and will cost you games. If they can learn to give the same high effort all the time, they’ll become the kind of team and program that wins championships. Some of the weaker rats already jumped ship and it appears there are a few that remain that are beginning to cry uncle (Greg Smith). I think Smith has some talent, but if he works his way out of a starting job then I won’t shed a tear. I want guys who want to be out there playing their guts out. I think Gailey fostered a weak mindset. He tried to keep Tashard Choice off the field, despite the fact that even a banged up Choice was still effective.
The offense may not run smoothly at first, but I’ll guarantee you this team will be a whole lot tougher than it ever was under Gailey. And once the offense does get on track, watch out. I like the fact that CPJ has his freshman recruits pushing the upperclassmen for jobs. Those freshmen appear to be tenacious and hungry, and have some experience in the offense already that will make the upperclassmen work hard. That’s good for the whole team.

I said it when he was hired and I’ll say it again. CPJ has no time for prima donnas, privilege, loafing, or malingering (not suggesting that applies to G. Smith). He will make Tech mentally tougher. In the short term, that might lead to less talent at some positions. However, the long term benefits of hard a$$ coaching far outweigh the short term effects of hurt pride.
The defections in the spring were not at all a surprise. My young son asked back in the spring, “Why are some of them quitting the team” ? My answer, “son, that is a good thing”. I still believe that.
I don’t care what scheme GT runs. When everyone starts pulling in the same direction, good things will happen.

word from numerous folks who’ve been in and around the program for a long time (including former players)…..
The toughness of the practices and conditioning wrought by and expected from PJ’s staff far exceeds anything seen from not just the previous staff, but going back a few staffs before that.
This is going to be fun to watch….

After about 6 months of CPJ and staff (and D-Rad for @ 2 years)in action, we are now beginning to appreciate not only how bad a coach Gailey was, but how pathetic an AD Dave Braine was. Both contributed mightily to leaving he GTAA in athletic and fiancial shambles. Neither should welcomed at GT ever again.
From a football perspective, the fading away of an “us vs. them” mentally within both the players and coaches ranks, to the positive results being reported from a significant improvement in player conditioning and attitudes, it is dramatic how big a culutural/mental toughness change that is taking place on the The Flats. The fact that Gailey’s abysmal tenure was allowed to go on as long as it did clearly reflects the incompetence of Dave Braine. 7 long years folks. 7! The squandering of talent on all those teams has NO answer. I am even more surprised at how long the “heavy” GT Athletics Alums allowed Gailey’s and Braine’s tenure to go on. The players, the fans, the GTAA all suffered mightily. I now believe that expectations will be much higher now, and in the future.

Old Nut,
Sorry to rain on your anti-CG rant, but….as much as you and others (like that idiot, “m”, who will be along shortly with his bolded broken record ramblings) would love to believe it…neither is Gailey a “bad coach” nor was his tenure “abysmal”. Believe me, I’ve seen both on The Flats. Gailey’s shortcomings were that he was (1) a conservative-minded strategist, and (2) tried to be too much of a ‘pro” coach when it came to practice and instruction.
He’s a fine man, but he’s honestly back where his coaching style is better-suited.

Tom:
With all due respect, I could not disagree more. CG was arrogant, condescending, and abrasive, AND he was just plain awful as a coach. His NFL record at Pittsburgh, Miami, and Dallas does him NO CREDIT either. His “pro-style” is just as awful.
CG was VERY abrasive with GT fans as witnessed by numerous stories to that effect posted by GT fans here in the Vent, and elsewhere. His radio interview with 790TheZone after the 2004 UGA defeat was simply an embarrassment to GT. He was arrogant and insulting to that radio host who was, in fact, a GT alum and a big CG supporter.
CG INSISTED on doing the Off play calling His style was stupid. FACT: Without Calvin Jophnson, he would have been fired sooner. Calling his style “conservative” is WAY too generous a description. How about GT throwing an interception for a TD vs Fresno State in 2002 with 18 seconds left in the half. How about calling a fake field goal for a punt vs. UNC in 2007 that resulted in UNC running the ball back for 15+ yard gain pass the original line of scrimmage. How about miss managing the game clock vs. UGA in 2004. How about QB development?????? How about 2002 UGA 51 GT 7, and the “I guess I didnt’ have the (GT) guys ready to play” post-game interview. How about field position management vs. MD for a winning GT field goal that left Bell trying the game-winning FG from the right hash vs middle of the field. How about putting Derrick Morgan, a defensive rookie, in on offense for a critical 4th down play vs. UVA in 2007 that decided the game. How about Off production going down EVRY SINGLE YEAR he was coach.
And…..I could go on and on and on and on and on. CG is awful as a coach, and is just an arrogant JA as a person, plain and simple.

For the life of me, I can’t understand why so many on this blog delight in bashing Chan Gailey. Under Gailey, we never had a losing record and never failed to go to a bowl. Recruiting was on the rise under Gailey.
I agree whole-heartedly that Paul Johnson is better for the program and I truly believe he is on the cusp of creating something special but Chan Gailey does not deserve the beating he regularly receives here.
Now I’ll sit back and wait for “M” to post his daily “Chan rant”.

…… oops! My post was accidently sent before I finished.
back to Braine & Gailey, and the stubborn arrogance.
Gailey was Braine’s friend, and in need of a ‘better’ (HC position I guess) since no more NFL teams would give him the opportunity seeing the poor job he did with the team of the 90s (Dallas). BTW, Gailey’s record with the Cowboys was right on par with his records everywhere eles … just a touch above .500; Dallas was 18-14 in his two seasons.
Well, 4 & 1/2 years after Braine’s hiring screw-up is where his arrogance, and inablility to admit he made the wrong choice, came shinging through — the new contract for Gailey (see my previous/incomplete post). And let’s not forget the “you can’t expect to win 9+ games a year at Tech” comment. He was exactly right with Gailey as his HC. How many times did Tech win 9+ games in a season from 1990 to Gailey’s hiring (and with how many DIFFERENT staffs)? Three times they won 9+, and another 3 seasons they had 8 wins.
Just because it worked with Frank Beamer (another one of Braine’s buddies) for Braine when he was at Va. Tech didn’t mean it was going to work at Ga.Tech. Ga.Tech is better than mediocre, and as long as Gailey was their HC they would have continued to wallow in mediocrity, with an occassional ‘blip’ to 8 or 9 wins. Again, Ga.Tech is better than that!

For allegedly being a fan for a long time, you do not seem to know the history of GT coaching.
To use terms like “arrogant, condescending, and abrasive” and “abysmal tenure” in regards to Gailey means you have “No Idea” what you are talking about
If you take away coaches with less than 10 games, Gailey is 5th in Wins and Winning percentage. He took his team to bowl games every year.
Look, I am not going to say he is greatest GT coach that ever lived (he couldn’t beat UGA, which is important), but he is definately not the worst. Probably, middle of the pack.
Get over Gailey and move on….

If arrogance is the test then Radokovich is the most arrogant of the group. He broke a promise to over 300 of the largest donors to the GTAA. Having had the opportunity to meet, speak with and talk to Braine and Gailey I find the comments from many here a joke. Gailey may not have been a great coach, but we did win (no losing record) went to bowl games, but did look bad in many games to go along with some nice wins (Va Tech in Blacksburg / Auburn). Braine did not do a good job with the finances, but he did hire many good coaches who are still on campus and winning (re: Tennis / Basketball / Volleyball). I do not think that Braine was perfect, but neither is Rad or Johnson. I wish Tech the best, but this idiotic PSL program we have is not the long term solution, we have sold less Season Tickets this year. I thought getting rid of Chan was going to right that ship…ooops maybe not. If you are going to blame the schedule, then blame Rad for picking up the wonderful Gardner Webb instead of a real opponent (they were available). But real fans do not care who we are playing they come to root for the Jackets, which I will do and root that we win and hopefully continue to improve.

You just described Tech’s football future minus the 8 and 9 win seasons 4-ever Tech Fan. Tech will never again be better than a 7 win team. You are in the middle of SEC country and will never recruit well enough to win beyond that level. Only mediocre recruits will be available to play in front of mediocre fans in a half empty stadium.

I shudder to think what would have been written in these blogs about some of the teams in the 80’s when Curry took over. We started purchasing season tickets back then (and still do). We were elated when we had a winning season and went to the All American Bowl. We were routinely winning 2 and 3 games a year up to that point. Gaily was far from our worst coach. He was a solid coach who just didn’t seem to mesh with the college atmosphere. If you would have told me back in the 80’s that Tech would someday fire a coach for having 7 winning seasons and going to 7 bowls in a row I would have laughed in your face. I understand the reasons, and I know times are different. I am also glad it was done and happy with the new hire. But nonetheless, it is a testament to what Curry started years ago and built from nothing into something. We’ve had a few bumps in the road, sure. But in general the football program is like the Dow over a 20 year stretch, generally trending upward. I like what I see. You people who think the Gailey years were “tough years” are just too damn young to know what you’re talking about. Look at our records when Curry first took over.

I’m not going to sit here and bash Coach Gailey. I think 4-ever and GT nut have made very good points. I think Gailey was not a good college coach or a good manager of college age kids. I do know for a fact that just over 10 years ago Braine was ready to get rid of O’Leary b/c he wasn’t winning enough and bring in HIS OWN MAN. The funny thing is that at particular time O’Leary was winning as much as Gailey ended up winning and Braine was more than happy with Gailey’s effort. Braine brought Gailey on the scene and then wasn’t man enough to admit that TECH could do better.

Good blog. I’m all for the players being in shape, game ready condition. Sometimes it’s the difference and like the fact noone is guaranteed a starting job but that said when someone is injured let the Docs decide when they get back to full playing or something to that effect. Some may not remember but there was a talented TB a few years ago who was having a whale of a game and had come out with some nagging injuries only to get a serious injury late in the game, fatigue I guess set in and chance. Anyway I like the direction of this program so far in terms of scheme, recruiting, development, etc…

Really CG Hater? Every single coach at Tech since Bobby Dodd except 1, Chan Gailey, suffered horrendous seasons and that includes O’Leary. Check the records. Tech is barely over .500 since the Dodd era. A good season every few years has been the rule since and then the slide back into mediocrity. We followed our split NC with a slide back into mediocrity. Only 1 coach had winners every season of his tenure. Only 1 coach went to a bowl every season of his tenure. Chan Gailey. PJ won’t even do that here. We are 12-32 against our in-state rival since 1964. Obviously you are in serious denial of our reality GT Man. If I am wrong give up some facts that will prove me wrong.

Guys - I agree about Gailey as a coach. I do, however, disagree about him as a man. He is a nice man, abrasive, but he’s a good person. An average coach at best.
To say that Gailey is a good coach is a joke! HE HAD CALVIN FREAKIN’ JOHNSON AND COULDN’T USE HIM! He left you know who at QB for four years! I’m a GT alum and life long GT fan and I’M NOT SATISFIED WITH 7 OR 8 WINS! I like Gailey as a man, I’ve met him and know him personally…but to try to defend him as a coach is just ignorant.
GT is a school with TONS of tradition…probably more than most. That is also the case for football. We are not a mediocre program and we should not be coached to be one.
Chan seemed to coach players to be weak and to accept mediocre results. He never beat UGA! He CHOKED in the ACC Championship…the ONE that he made…he never got the results he should have out of Calvin Johnson. HE NEVER DEVELOPED A QB! Chan choked and his teams followed him…
Enough about Chan - CPJ is a hard nosed coach that is bringing back some pride to the Golden Flats. There is a buzz about the program again and it’s only a matter of time before we’re on top again! GO JACKETS!

Consider the following:
If all else was the same, if CPJ had been the HC 2002-2007, do you think he would have been better or worse than CG? Kind of makes the point doesn’t it? I don’t think any GT fan woud thik that CG was better than CPJ. The fact that Braine hired CG over ALL POSSIBLE CANDIDATES is what is so unbelievable.
The more recent HC’s whose coaching performance rank poorly are: Bill Lewis, Bill Curry, Chan Gailey and Bud Carson. Lewis was plainly incompetent. Curry had no prior HC experience and a DEARTH of talent. CG had team talent but was closer to BL’s incompetence. It didn’t take two full years before BL was canned.
And, for all those that remember, Heisman Trophy winner QB Steve Spurrier was Pepper Rodgers QBs coach. Spurrier left GT when he was passed over for Curry for the GT HC job. Curry’s overall record was not good, but he did beat GA (84 & 85). Spurrier was then hired as HC at Duke, and won the ACC in 1987…with Duke. Oh, what could have been.

If memory serves me right, Gailey was forced to hire Giff Smith, as well as John Tenuta…..Just to throw it out there.
The program will be better off will Paul Johnson at the wheel. Gailey showed no fire and his play calling cost us how many games? Think back to the ACC championship game against Wake. Ball threw deep outs to Calvin about 14 times…..not one complete. Even worse, we were ahead by a field goal, and instead of grinding it out with Tashard, Reggie throws an interception. It turned out to lead Wake to a field goal to tie the game. I won’t bash him personally, but his coaching screams of mediocrity.

Bobby Ross had Tech on the team to watch of the 90’s. The dawgs were worried under Ray Goff/Vince. Tech was being set for 7 to 10 win seasons and national recruiting, only for The NFL to step in and give Ross another stopover. People forget we were 8-5 in 1991 when we loss William Bell and the big fullback only to have to play a bunch of freshman. We lost a couple of close games if correct including Ga. The point is that it may be easier to transition from a pro style with an option component than from a option type offense to a pro style that Ross had to develop at Tech after Curry. So hopefully that will be the case in the next few years.

I would not characterize Gailey as a bad coach, just the wrong coach, like many have said. It wasn’t the mistakes that bothered me the most or the record, it was the predictability and boredom in his style coupled with the inability to change.
I think the current team will be much more fun to watch, even if it doesn’t result in wins right away.
Ross was the coach when I was at school and the one thing I remember about him above all else is the respect he demanded from his players. O’Leary and Fridge demanded that same respect. I think CPJ will as well. Discipline is a good thing, especially when dealing with players of this age/level.
As for going to Bowls every year, don’t care, many aren’t worth the invitation. IMO, there are too many of them. If the payout can’t attain at least a 10% profit for the teams, they should not be around. I would much rather see a tougher opponenet during the year than a patsy just to make sure we make bowl eligibility.
Those days under Curry and Ross included the likes of Tennessee, Auburn, Notre Dame, etc. Those were fun games.

It is kind of amusing to read these Tech blogs as an outsider. On one hand there are excuses why Tech isn’t winning/can’t win/can’t fill the stadium, et al and then the same posters turn right around and talk like Tech should be winning double digit games every season. If you take a good long look at your situation in general you will see very clearly why Tech will never be in that double digit category with any consistency. You have alot to overcome at Tech. You actually might be a better fit somewhere like conference USA. You will never be able to recruit against SEC schools, Clemson, FSU, VT, Miami, et al for the recruits it takes to win at that level.

As a Tech alum and ardent supporter, I am having an inner conflict regarding the new triple option offense. Part of me wants to buy-in to it hook, line and sinker, but part of me is worried about it’s long term effectiveness. Some of the questions I am trying to answer from other football fans: 1. If it is such a good offense — why aren’t more of the top programs using it? 2. Does Tech expect to be able to compete for ACC and national championships? 3. How does this offense affect recruiting the top players?
Most of the top high school players are already thinking about their chances to make it as a pro. Do WR’s want to play for a program that runs the ball 80% of the time. Do running backs want to break the traditional mold and become an ABC back? What QB can make it at the next level without being an excellent passer? Do the offensive linemen want to shed pounds so they can block 20 yards down the field?

Folks, There is a lot of truth to be said by all but let me shed some light on a couple of subjects. Bill Curry was very similar to Chan Gailey. Very likable person that had the coaching ability to get guys to a level of 7 to 8 wins. He won 11 at Alabama, but because he was not one of them the fans and administration new he wouldn’t be able to main that success. Chan’s fault was that he was a manager not a leader. All of you that have a bit of sense understand what I am saying. Chan could talk a good talk but when toe met leather and he needed to step up to the plate. He faultered. The talent we had needed a person that would lead them to victory not sit back and say you guys do it on your own. Chan was good for that. He would say things like, these guys don’t need to be told how to get ready for a bid game like this. Well, if you aren’t telling them who will. As parents we all know that even though our kids understand right and wrong we will tell them anyway to make sure. This action taken by Gailey took great talent of 10 win caliber and reduced it to 7 and 8 win seasons. That is why we get so mad about his performance. Folks, GA at its best the last few years should have lost to us 5 of the last 6 years. Instead we went 0-6. Our top athlete in Calvin Johnson never had a decent pass come his way and so he would have to settle for a great catch for 15 yards instead of a nice pass for a 60 yard touchdown. Any other coach would have use his backup QBs to find someone that could throw a decent pass. Chan was afraid to make the big calls and so we lost big. Chan cared less about the GA game. That transferred into the psychee of our players. Everyone that loves TECH and UGA knows that is a big game, except Chan. Yes, his is gone and thank GOD for it. Because our boys need a man to help them to mature as men and understand that hard work, no excuses and pride are what it means to be a winner and also to be called a TECH MAN. That is what separates us from the rest and it always will. Today we have a chance to get that back on the Flats. Go Jackets!!!

My final CG rant: the EXACT MOMENT I began to despise CG.
September 21, 2002: GT vs. BYU
Before this 4th GT game of the year, GT RB Tony Hollings(remember him) had (3) 100 yard games into tht season. He was THE leading NCAA rusher at the time.
Mid 3rd Quarter, Hollings “tweaks” his knee and he limps off to the bench for a while. Looks like a “sprain.” He gets cleared, and CG allows him back in.
It’s 4th quarter, with (8) minutes to go, Hollings scores from 2 yds out to put GT ahead 28-19.
Still 4th Qtr, less than 4 minutes to go. GT is winning 28-19, with the ball, 1st down at the BYU 45. CG sends Hollings BACK in the game to rush. I’m cussing!! Very 1st play, Hollings runs thru middle, cuts, and blows out his knee. He is done for the rest of the season.
So the “great” (7 wins/season) CG takes the nation’s leading rusher with (3) 100 yd games (AND GT’s TOTAL RUSHING GAME) playing with some kind of knee “sprain” puts him back while we’re winning BY MORE THAN 7 pts AND DRIVING WITH THE BALL late in the game.
Let me tell you something: ANY HC that would do that is some kind of SERIOUS idiot. So for all you CG “homers” out there, just refelct on what kind of IDIOT HC would allow that to happen. CG was a STAIN on the GT program.

TOM I agree with you.. I didnt like Chan as a GT coach, but Im not going to hate the man. His two biggest downfalls were “(1) a conservative-minded strategist, and (2) tried to be too much of a ‘pro” coach when it came to practice and instruction.” However, his other flaw was that he kept Reggie as a starting QB when his stats decreases through the years. And the comment he made about how the UGA game isnt a bigger deal than the rest. When he said that, I stopped supporting him.
However, I had many friends on team and they all said that he was a good man, but he had a racist’s undertone about him. And they often would joke around in the dining hall about him being a slave master. It was funny to see them re-enact Gailey in practice! lol

Part 2, David Braine was a cancer that grew year after year for TECH. His philosophy was to get rid of all Tech influence in the front offices and administration and replace them with VT folk and others. Remove the GT legacy and institute your own. Now you know why Reggie ball says things like the GT vs UGA game is just media hype. His success at VT was not his alone. Beamer often disagreed with Dave and Dave was not Big Man on Campus. Beamer made Dave and Dave new it and so he used Wayne Clough a friend to hire him here at TECH to make a name for himself and to get out from underneath the shadow of Frank Beamer. Case in point. Can you name the AD of VT today? That is Beamer Town hands down. Dave Braines arrogance always left him short when it came to the total buy in of the GT faithful. That is why he wrote a check for TECH that TECH couldn’t cash. Well, Chan needed a favor like Dave did and Dave was willing to give it to him, because he could control Chan and benefit off of his success. Dig a little deeper and you will find that it wasn’t Dave’s brilliance that hired the other coaches, he just took the credit. That happened quit often around the Edge center. Every move he made from Academics to Athletics all came crumbling down, because it was all built on a weak foundation of ego (His), deception (ability to lead), lies (saying he was committed to TECH’s success, but only belived in 7 win seasons),and sabotage (Tech Stadium and Renewing of Chan’s contract, etc). Bobby Ross was the answer to the question, can TECH win 8+ games and compete year in and out on this level. Bill Lewis set us back and O’Leary restored. I am sorry TECH fans that believe that it is ok to be 7 and whatever and go to any bowl that will have us. This is not the way of Georgia Institute of Technology Administrative Staff nor is it the mindset of any athlete that deems himself a winner. 2nd place is just not good enough. If mediocrity is good enough for you, just hid in the bushes and watch. All others that want to win and win big, Continue to stand up for your school and never except anything other than EXCELLENCE. Kick A$$ TECH and just remember and/or now that you are More Than Conquerors. You are TECH

In regard to recruiting, someone said that Tech, being in the midst of SEC country, could never recruit well. However, in 2007, Tech’s class was rated higher than UGA’s (barely) and most of the SEC. Its 2008 class was moving towards an even higher rating. So, Tech can recruit well. Just need to get out there and do it. Whatever happened to the top five players question?

Look, all you guys, GT WILL be back on top. No doubt about it. Paul Johnson has them feeling united, and feeling like winners, already. After former LSU QB What’s-his-face Perilloux gets out of Grant Field with part of his skin left, Tech will be beating some tougher customers you are expecting they’ll lose to.
Charles, since it’s true that Tech is 12-32 against Georgia since 1964, it should be remembered that Georgia was pretty desperate at the time - so desperate that they wouldn’t even count two legitimate WW II shutouts administered to them by Tech (still won’t). Trailing Tech in the long series by a game, in 1964, they had hired a coach who would stop at nothing to recruit and win; a coach who would demand that a big Sanford Stadium be made humongous, to accommodate thunderous, intimidating throngs. He created the monster. Whatever else happens in future, Paul Johnson is going to “point” for the Georgia game, as should always be done.
THWG_Dan, GT DOES have “tons of tradition,” and not just the catchiest fight song. Unequaled in the South in winning percentage during the first 25 years with a head coach, comprising all of Heisman, plus the first nine of Alexander, we sagged in the ‘Thirties, but bounced back under Dodd.
So what does all this tell you? A good coach makes the difference. He’ll recruit, he’ll coach the boys up, he may enlarge the stadium (Dodd did), he’ll know what’s going on, and he’ll inspire the best from the team. We have such a coach.

Hard work, great conditioned players and I will find a way to beat you attitude does bother this dawg fan. Still think we will win this year but CPJ is going to wup up on some folks and that has me concerned. His defenses will be more than up to the challenge in the ACC. After reading most of the CG comments it’s hard to say anything in his defense. While CG may very well be a good and decent “man”, every one of his teams under achieved. I remember how excited I was in 2006 but the best CG could “coach” was a 9-5 let down. And how many of his 7-6 seasons looked so promising only to see the team go flat. We had good players. What we needed was a good coach to help them reach their potential. I for one won’t miss CG’s six “maybe next year” letdowns. I’m optimistic about football at Tech again. Go Jackets!

I can sum up the Chan Gailey era pretty quickly. Last season’s VT game- - 11 days to prepare, ESPN Thursday night game. GT gets the ball around the 20 following the kickoff. Offensive huddle breaks. Taylor Bennett calls a time out. Embarrasing beyond words.

Tech now has the coach it should have had all along. Time to move on to bigger and better things. Grumbling about Gailey’s inadequacies will neither erase the mediocre record at The Flats nor do anything to beat VT, BC, Miami and the Athens Probation Detention Center this season. Johnson’s our man, and he’s going to be for a while and Tech WILL win a bunch of a football games in the years to come.

To correct what was said earlier: Dave Braine did not know Chan Gailey when O’Leary left Tech! When asked what he would do if O’Leary left Tech, he would say in a cocky voice: “I know where the good coaches are!” Well, when O’Leary left he had no clue who to hire. He called a prominent Tech alumni and former NFL great and asked: “who is a good coach?” Their response was: “Dave, isn’t that your job to know?” Braine heard 3rd hand that this guy Chan Gailey is suppose to be a nice guy, but I don’t know him. He immediately got on a plane the next day with Larry New, flew to Miami and offered Chan the job on the spot. He then lied to Mack McWhorter (as documented in the press back then) and other potential candidates that he had not offered the job to anyone. When Chan came into Tech, he had no clue who to hire as staff members. Braine told him to not keep any of the existing staff except Bill O’Brien. May I mention that 4 of those staff members went on to be named assistant head coaches elsewhere!
Gentlemen, we have suffered from Braine Damage at Tech for his entire tenure! The problem, though, goes beyond Dave Braine. It started and ended with Wayne Clough! Multiple times prominent alumni banded together and went to Clough only to see him bury his head in the sand and do nothing. Clough then allowed Braine to extend Gailey’s contract before he went out the door to screw us before leaving! In years to come, you will open Webster’s dictionary to the term government employee and see Wayne Clough’s picture!
The damage these people amassed is incredible! DRad has his hands full bailing us out! But, we will survive!!!
And as Paul Harvey use to say: And now you know the rest of the story!

TWO YEARS AGO GEORGIA TECH WAS BETTER THAN GEORGIA(STILL LOST TO THEM), AND THEN RECRUITED AS WELL AS UGA LAST YEAR. TECH STILL LOST AND THE PROGRAM NEVER IMPROVED AND IN FACT GOT WORSE AND GEORGIA’S ONE OF THE TOP 5 TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY. THAT’S THE DIFFERENCE A COACH MAKES. Hmmm, it takes a while to respond when it is a busy day at work trying to keep a finger on a couple of different offices and several different clients. Don’t just assume I’m a UGA fan, in reality I’m an old Tar Heel but I have lived in Georgia for so long that I have adopted the Bulldogs as my local favorite basically because of the fan base at Tech. They just bellyache too much about everything and pushed me towards their arch rival. The Tech fans are so obsessed by their “little step-brother” syndrome that I couldn’t take it. UGA fans want to beat Tech but most of them don’t spend the entire year obsessing about the Jackets. Even though Grant Field is much more convenient geographically to where I live I usually make a couple of games per year in Athens and never go to Tech unless I have a ticket for the UGA game, Grant Field just doesn’t offer a top notch Saturday college football experience and I really don’t care for ACC football unless it is UNC at Kenan. I check up on all the local teams but have chosen UGA, better atmosphere, more fun, less hassles.

Wishful Thinking you don’t have a clue. If you were connected at all with the alumni you would never make such a rediculous statement. Wayne Clough is the worst thing that has ever happened to Tech, at we are finally rid of him! You ignore problems, you don’t fire, you reassign, and you throw money and more people at problems. A typical Washington solution, and look where he ended up. He has been not so quietly lobbying for a Washington job for the last four years.
You are probably a neophyte student that simply does not have the connections to see the true picture. We have all been there. Suggest you talk to people in the know. I assure you that you will be enlightened!
While you are at it ask about the retirement package that Clough allowed Dave Braine to write for himself! Try insurance for life for starters! Or ask yourself what good president would allow a lameduck athletic director to extend 4 head coaches contracts as a new athletic director was coming into the job? In Gailey’s case alone it cost Tech about 4 million.
Thank God Wayne Clough is gone!!!

Not to jump on either band wagon however, the C.G. and D.B. story runs very deep and divided within the GT ex players ranks also. I strongly represent the side of ex players that was very unhappy when C.G. was hired and estatic when D.B. left and then my excitement went to a new level when C.G. was terminated. Chan while not popular was light years ahead of the disaster kown as Bill Lewis. This all of us can agree on. Chan declined help from John Davis (all pro) (4 super bowls) ex Tech O lineman for free. He also declined help from several other qualified ex Tech NFL guys out of vanity. C.P.J. is not the second coming, he is exactly what our program needed. Dan surprised us all and decided to stay. We have confidence that he can help right the ship. All said our program has a very future with its present leadership. We also expect the Alexander Tharpe Fund to rebound and the dollars to return to GT. Now it is time for the new era to begin and all of the Tech people to learn somethng from the guys across town, lets band together and support our school, team and wonderful history. I for one am very proud of the years I spent on the flats and representing the gold and white.

Jack-it…shut up! I like your passion. I think you’re spot on about Braine. But, do not drag Clough into this. That’s assenine.
My GT degree does more for me now than it ever would have without Clough there. He took a top 20 school and made it a top 5 school. There were people from Stanford and MIT touring some of our labs saying “wow, I wish we had that.”
Football is football, and I blead gold and blue like the rest of you. But Clough is one of the best things to ever happen to Georgia Tech and I was quite sad to see him leave to become the head of the Smithsonian. I’m not willing to trade the extra thousands a year I make after having gone to one of the best schools in the country for two wins a year.

WishfulThinking you just made my point about Tech fans. Nowhere in my post did I mention UT or any other school other than Tech, UGA, and UNC. The “little step brother” syndrome strikes again by living vicariously through some other team that beats your rival because your teams haven’t been able to win. I’ll surely be pulling for UGA and UNC against the Jackets and I’ll really be hoping that Gardner-Webb throws a scare into you all since they are from the Tar Heel state. You Tech people have a worse inferiority complex than the NC State fans and aren’t nearly as cordial or realistic. At least you can go to a game in Raleigh without worrying if your car will be vandalized or stolen and the fans haven’t taken to throwing bottles, coins, and fish at the visiting team. When it comes to lack of class and boorish treatment of visitors the Tech crowd is in a league of their own.

Been a while. Looks like you all have gone off on a path very much your own yet again.
Tony Clark took some nickel back reps today with the first defense in some passing drills.
Co-offensive line coach Mike Sewak offered this in trying to explain the offensive line trying to get up to speed with several new faces in new places while learning a very different system against a D-line that is experienced.
“Understanding a new concept is one thing, understanding new techniques is another, but getting your body between a defender in the pass rush and trying to stop a pass-rush move that [defenders] already know works in the ACC while we’ve got guys [on the offensive line] who have never taken a snap in the ACC … those are the guys who have to keep improving.”

Let’s tell the truth. Georgia interviewed Chan Gailey for their head coaching position in 2001. They passed him over to hire Mark Richt. Braine went for Gailey statement that Tech was going to compete with Georgia. Tech lost to Georgia 51-7 in Gailey’s first Tech - Georgia game. That is why Gailey was so hacked off at midfield after that game.
Braine figured if Georgia talked to him, Gailey must be a viable candidate. Braine did not stop to think that Georgia saw something in Gailey that made them question his ability to effectively coach a Div 1A college team.
The same thing happened to Tech years earlier and Furman Bisher wrote about it. Bill Lewis was the defensive coordinator at Georgia and went into Coach Dooley’s office and told him that East Carolina had called him to offer their HC position. Dooley encouraged him to take it and did not offer that he was going to retire in another year (1988) and the Georgia job would be available. Furman Bisher asked what was it that Dooley saw in Lewis that led him to know Lewis was not HC material, and that Tech did not recognize.
The strangest part of the CG era (error?) was when CG traveled to Miami to interview for the Dolphins HC job and THEN went to Pittsburgh to interview for the Steelers HC job. Both teams turned him down and Braine had the Tech front office throw him a party when he returned. Now that in and of itself is a shameful moment in Tech football history. It’s like celebrating the fact your wife has come back to you after running off with two different men to marry the first one that asks and then throwing her a party when they both dump her and she comes crawling back to the only option she has left.
Remember that Tech has a 243-222 football record since Dodd retired, and it might be a losing record without CG’s 7 and 8 win seasons. I do not see much better in Tech’s future.

Yes siree, come on down to Bobby Dudd Stadium at Hysteric Grant’s Tomb and for $250.00 the GIT will provide you with tickets to some really riveting football, Jax State, Gardner-Webb, and everyone’s favorite Duke! I’ll be sure to stand in line to give up my money but only if I get double free hotdogs, triple free cokes, and a bonus popcorn. The only hope you clowns have of selling out your dump, er, stadium is if Miss. State starts strong and brings about 25,000 fans over from the Magnolia state. FSU will still be rebuilding and their fans will travel less than in years past. Virginia fans never travel and the few Miami fans won’t travel inside the state of Florida they certainly won’t make a trip up here. Yep, the excitement in the air is overwhelming seeing the mighty Gamecocks, and … (what is Gardner Webb’s mascot anyway?) in person is more than the average college fan can stand especially considering that both teams stand a 50-50 chance of beating the Flying Bugs. Of course next year will be much better when GIT hosts national powers like NC State and Maryland, I’m sure that their legions of fans will pour into Atlanta to fill up the Joke by Coke. Yes maam, as long as you are in the Almost Competetive Conference the nations fans will be riveted on Atlanta waiting for a halftime update score on the Tech-Samford game.

Swiller- Its good to read what you know. Now here is what I know: 1. Ugay will beat the pants off of GSU. The whole time idiotic ugay fans will be talking sh*t to gsu fans, who are all mostly ugay fans anyways. 2. Ugay will pound central michigan, and really start pouring it on in these blogs. 3. Ugay pulls out a win over usc, CMR becomes mayor of Athens. 4. Ugay beats ASU by 14, ugay gives themselves the NC, CMR becomes president. 5. Bama pulls out a victory on ugay. Ugay is stunned, but all the fans start saying that “1 loss is good for them, brings them back down” “they needed that to get their heads back in the game” 6. Ugay goes on to beat UT and vandy, all bandwagon fans are back on. 7. LSU puts a beat down on the mutts, and with 2 losses by Halloween, things aren’t looking good. Bandwagon fans (75% of ugay fanbase) are looking to get off, CMR starting to feel the heat. 8. UF puts a beat down on the pups, and by now the wagon is empty. Ugay fans talk about how ‘08 season is just good learning for the team, and how they will come back in ‘09 and then win the NC. Ugay fans blame injuries, SI curse, refs, CMR, Hank Williams Jr., Fatt Stafford (in that order) but still believe they can salvage the season. 9. GT pulls an upset over the mutts, Athens goes under martial law. the thUGA players start looting stores, the bloggers are calling for CMRs head b/c he “mismanaged” such a great team and waffle houses across GA close. Ugay fans are still optimistic that ‘09 will be their season, this was all a good learning experience, and the team was too young to handle hype. 10. June 2009, they award themselves another preseason NC.

Also, if you were educated enough to read that garbage story about “lagging” sales, you would know that they are down 271 from last year, still with 2 weeks to go before the season. While sales aren’t through the roof, they are not actually “lagging” from previous years. And I am very excited about the upcoming season.

Hmmmmm, how long have you been in GA? Your memory seems to be a bit clouded. From a Tech alum that lives in Chapel Hill let me remind you of a few things.
First of all, to say that Tech doesn’t have a Saturday game atmosphere but you have wistful memories of Kenan stadium is delusional. That is the quietest, most low-key, no-tailgating football crowd I’ve ever seen. (OK, except for Duke up the road.) Apparently you haven’t been in Bobby Dodd stadium during a flyover just before we take on Miami or ND. If so, the thoughts in your post wouldn’t have entered your mind. Second, it’s perfectly natural for you to adopt UGA, I would expect nothing less. Both fanbases are composed of people that did not attend the school, yet exude a superiority complex that was apparently earned by their selection of a school to cheer for. Third, you go as far as saying that NCSU is a safer place to watch a game. Apparently you had moved away when the guy was shot and killed during an NCSU tailgate a couple of years ago. Oops. It might be best at this point to stay off the blogs until basketball season, when you may know a little more about what you’re posting. Oh - are you still going to be a UGA fan during basketball season, or is that bandwagon too small for your tastes? Thought so…

HAHAHAHAHAHA. You work out of your house. You are a big “self employed” guy huh? A “self made man” that can’t afford office space anywhere huh? So pretty much you cook meth in the back of your double wide, correct?
And just because you are too uneducated to understand what the real gt45 was saying with his “night shift” comment, he said that you posted as 1225 am (long after him) and then again at 8am this morning (right after him). Meaning that you must be finishing the night shift, (or just constantly checking the blogs b/c you are cracked out on the meth you cook, and can’t sleep). If you are a self made man, working from your home “office” (methlab) then I would think that you wouldn’t have to get up so early if you are also staying up so late, hard at work.

gTech - I didn’t think you could respond without hurling insults. Typical GT reaction. No, I’m not 17, but I wish I felt that way. Regarding acronyms, I guess your repeated use of CMR doesn’t qualify as one. Nor does “ugay” (is that the best you can do?) for that matter. Perhaps you didn’t understand my acronym so in the future I will shorten and spell out each word. Lastly, 271 tickets short of last year. Isn’t that the same number of tickets GT sold to their most recent bowl game? Also, 271 doesn’t divide evenly by 8 or 12 which are typical sizes of hot dog packs. Laugh out loud (or LOL for those who understand acronyms)!

HAHAHA. Nice name. Actually you must be gt45 because you “understand” his intentions. What a tool! Now to your assertions. Yes, I was up after midnight. Watching the Olympics in fact. Even though I stayed up late, I answered the bell this morning rather than calling in sick like some cubicle occupying GT grad. Meth? You seem to know much more about it than I do so that tells me something. Self employed? No, I actually work for a corporation. I just happen to work out of my house. My morning commute, which would make a cubicle occupant green with envy, is a short walk from my bedroom to another room - my office. Why do I work out of my house? I sold my business last year to a large corporation (retired in my mid 50s) and they retained me for one year during the transition. I will be totally retired at the end of the month, just in time for football season. Now, get with some of your “smarter than everyone else” GT buddies and see if you can be more creative than the ugay thing. Lame. You and your fellow ticket holders enjoy your free hot dogs.

CG was a terrible coach, that is undeniable. I have friends who played under him, and they’ve told me he recruited the hell out of them but when it came to practices and games he left the coaching to the assistants. They’ve told me Tenuta was a harda$$ but he knew how to coach, and they respected him—and that’s why our defense was so good.
Just a comment about CG’s choice of QB for that 4 yr stretch: you guys are f_ing idiots if you think Reggie was a bad choice. If you didn’t happen to notice the following year, our best replacement happened to be one of the worst passers in the country…I know Reggie made mistakes, but at least he could make plays(or allow CJ to make plays). Speaking of that, no one would know just how good CJ was if Reggie wasn’t throwing him those terrible passes.

271 tickets in a stadium of 55,000. I realize that we are talking about total sales, not stadium capacity, and they have sold 25,767 so far. Thus, last year they sold 25,767 + 271 (im spelling this out so our inbred friends can understand) is 26,038. That means that the 271 unsold tickets make up 1% of sales. So yes, they are down 1% with 2 whole weeks before the season starts. So sure, sales are down a whole freaking 1%, and will surely be made up by the start of the season. But yes, a lot of GT fans are pathetic for not buying tickets, I fully agree with that point. And when did I say it was political?

THWG_Dan, if you think a Tech blog should only include Tech fans, then take a look at the UGA blog. You’ll see some of the same Tech posters from this site hurling insults at UGA fans on the UGA blogs. Most of it is good natured fun that happens between arch rivals. Others are less tasteful. I actually happen to agree with you. GT will not win the NC. Nor will UGA, but you have to admit you’d be thrilled if GT were ranked preseason #1, you finished the previous season #2, and you had the majority of your starters returning. Maddog - No doubt. If Tech was preseason #1, I’d be thrilled too. I certainly don’t fault you or any fan for being excited about their team. You should be. Tech is clearly at a transition point, and I’m still excited. I know I’m viewing the world through my Tech glasses, but I’m still excited. My point is that a very large percentage of UGA “fans” seem to be going crazy. I saw one guy suggest that UGA would win every game by 3+ TD’s. I understand being a fan, but I don’t understand the down right arrogance that seems to be overtaking the UGA “fans”. I know that the bulk of them bangwagon fans. But hey, if you’ve got bandwagon fans, that means you’re good enough to attract the bandwagon crowd. I’m not saying it’s a good thing, but it’s better than not having any fans. As rivalries go, I never want to see UGA win, especially not against Tech. That said, I understand your excitement, but let’s try to contain the idiots as best we can.

Regarding my success. I didn’t want to discuss it, but posts about me being unemployed, a meth addict, living in a trailer, and even working a night shift prompted my setting the record straight. Again, you don’t have to believe me. I know the truth and I’m living it. Delusional? Nah. Just fortunate to live in a great country that rewards success. Look guys - if you consider 1% really down, then you’re nit picking details. In other words, if you’ve got 55,000 dollars vs 54,729 dollars, there’s not much of a difference…certainly not worthy of a story by the ajc. You are correct, one is the less than the other, but to call it lagging is just a ploy to incite the idiots. Yes, I’m calling you an idiot. THWG_Dan, good post. Any time a program enjoys success they gain bandwagon fans. I remember my son becoming a FSU fan when they were hot. That lasted a few years before he came back to UGA (under Donnan, mind you). You should be excited about GT. If I were a Tech fan I’d be excited too. For those who dismiss the option offense, West Virginia has had a pretty good run, and Auburn has just installed it as well. Some may nitpick the differences between the systems, but it’s still a similar concept. I never take opponents for granted. Perhaps it’s because I was at UGA during Dooley’s regime and he would build up a school for the blind as a difficult opponent. I do like our chances in every game, but that being said, we could easily lose 3 to 5 games. That would be disastrous but I wouldn’t start whipping out excuses. Good luck with the jackets, but not against UGA.

THWG_Dan, I’m well aware of GTs history. My family moved to GA in the mid 60s, before the Braves and Falcons. Tech was definitely the “big dog” (no pun intended), and Vince had just begun at UGA. My brother and I were both fans. He even wanted to play at Tech and was a pretty good receiver. Hands like flypaper and a ferocity like nothing I’ve seen since. I remember playing neighborhood ball and I lobbed a pass in the end zone (street). He pulled a Superman and made the catch. He also lots a few chunks of skin and caused an oncoming car to swerve off the road. Fortunately no damage to the car or my brother. He blew his knee out in a big way in a game at the end of his Jr year and never played football again. He decided to go to UGA and major in business. He’s been very successful - his ferocity has served him well. I followed suit at UGA but we both still like to see GT do well, just not against UGA. I’ll bet a lot of UGA fans who are near my age feel still the same way. You just cannot ignore the impact Tech had on the state in the mid 60s and earlier. Didn’t mean to bore you, but I do have fond memories of the “good ole days”.

It means you still can’t figure out that -271 means less than last year. So you changed the word from actual to negligible. Less means less Jethro. I take that back. Calling you Jethro is an insult to Jethro Bodine. You’re quite a few notches below him IQ wise.

gTech=Stupid: You are a moron. The -271 statement was about TOTAL tickets last season, not at the same point in time as this year. Considering this season hasn’t started, there are still 2 weeks to sell those 271 (and then it would not be LESS, do you understand that??). I never claimed that we have sold more, I just said that when these two weeks are up, at this pace, we could sell the same amount, maybe slightly more (exactly what the article says, idiot) I agree that its not a good showing by GT fans, but you are just being a nit-picky coward right now. I must admit that I didn’t know a lot about Tech’s depth, but I always wondered why he played Ball at QB. If nothing else, he should have benched him once a year for the UGA game. Being a dog fan I’m glad he did, but I have many friends who are GT fans and they just cringed at him lining up behind center for 4 years. Wow, someone took my name. Im flattered. Yes, im so stupid. I even agreed that sales were down, and my first post was incorrect. You inbred mutts sure don’t like to let things go. Cindy- go back to popping out babies for more welfare, trailer trash. As long as we are talking about meaningless preseason polls, we are #25 in the Playboy poll which doesn’t have to worry about regional sales like SI (b/c people don’t buy it based on the cover of stafford crapping the ugay helmet). And how am I “coming in here with my brilliance” Dawgbite? This is the GT blog isnt it? Aren’t you coming in here with your ignorance? Was that you and Cindy’s trailer they found in Lavonia??

CG Hater- I was just trying to defend my post earlier. I will leave it alone now. Sales are actually very important, and I wouldn’t call saying sales were down 1% “nerdy”. Im sorry that I try and use logic to defend my posts. I will just start hurling insults, like in my last post. Numbers seem to confuse everyone on these boards anyways.

UGA will slaughter Paulie’s triple option even worse than Gailey ever lost this year. Atleast in 3 years you guys may be a contender in the Awful Coast Conference. I may be getting a little ahead of myself though, besides you guys are getting pretty familiar with playing in the blue turf bowl.
