QBs will get blasted, have a blast
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I spoke yesterday with Craig Candeto, a quarterback at Navy from 2001-‘04. He had been there for two seasons when Paul Johnson was arrived, and was primary signal caller for PJ’s first two seasons.
You won’t be surprised to learn that he loves the offense.
He did point out, though, there there are ways to slow it.
“There are a lot of things a defense can do to give you a false read. The best teams defending it were the ones that saw it, like Air Force,” he said. “A defensive end can crash down on the fullback and make it look like he’s going to tackle him, put a hand on him, and then bounce outside on the quarterback.
“A linebacker can be running at you, and at the last second run to the pitch.”
There was more, but the point was the offense is not failsafe. Of course. Nothing is. Candeto also went out of his way to point out that the quarterback get hit A LOT in this offense, to the point where his passing game may be affected because, “you’re going to end up with sore hands, elbow, shoulders … you get hit almost every play either carrying the ball or carrying out your fake.”
Bottom line, though, he loved it.
“I’m a huge believer in coach Johnson, and a huge believer in that offense,” Candeto said. “He’s not taking over a team that was 0-11. I think if the guys buy into the program, I’m not saying national championship or anything, I think they can have a winning season and go to a bowl game.”
Back LATER today WITH some practice UPDATES, although probably not from the morning session (I’m working on football section stories today).

“JB, I remember hearing the samething about the Gator’s QB… How’d that work out?”
Uh, I’m pretty sure it worked out as a win for Georgia genius. And the day a recruit of Tim Tebow’s caliber even bats an eye at Georgia Tech’s pathetic program is the day hell freezes over. You’re talking apples and oranges son.
‘…your “national championship” doggies will have had their heads slammed with multiple doses of reality. We’ll see who’s standing at the end of that run.”
Typical Techie hoping and praying some other team on Georgia’s schedule can do what his pathetic team can’t. What a sad sad existence. Speaking of mooching off other teams, once VT, Clemson, Miami, and Florida State lay the blueprint for defending the “Johnson Express” you’ll be facing a well rested Georgia team coming off a bye week. We’ll make it 8 in ‘08.

This is probably why Tech will need up to 5 QB’s on the roster than can execute the offense on any one given day. I think this offense is going to work particularly if the passing game is mixed in with it, as we had a lot of this under John Dewberry, Shawn Jones and Joe Hamilton. They all got hit pretty regular running the ball and scrambling. WE did’nt have the depth though at QB that we appear to be developing now.

Obnoxious Georgia Fan is right. Tech fans always hope to win something by default because they can’t do it on their own. Alas UGA will beat the absolute hell out of Tech again this year. Just like every year. Yellow Jackets are the bottom to UGA’s top. Know what I mean fellow Tech “men”?

Im sure all of the uga fans will have a field day with this, but I don’t really care. I just want to say that im personally offended by SI ranking us below Duke. Being 80th kinda makes me mad too, but its being below Duke that is a slap in the face. Come on, Duke will be lucky to win 3 games next year. Yes, I realize that we lost to them in 2003, but that will not happen this year (God willing). I know that we may not have all 5 star recruits, but they are still leaps and bounds ahead of the average Duke class! I mean honestly, Sports Illustrated, I hate you. I hope that CPJ hangs that ranking in the locker room, b/c if that won’t motivate the team, then nothing will. Matt- really, wtf is wrong with SI? I mean no matter how much you love/hate tech and like to pi* people off, you can’t honestly believe that DUKE is better?? So now im sure I will get a ton of smarta* responses, but I just needed to get out the fact that i am boycotting SI.
As a side note, I did not realize this until now because of 1. I didn’t get SI b/c of cover (and I have another preseason magazine) and 2. I saw the uga posts about us being below Duke, but honestly never believed them.

“Obnoxious Georgia Fan” - I’ll have to admit, there is one grain of truth in your post - your name. BTW, I will give credit where credit is due - Georgia is strong this year, no doubt. My point is that you WILL have multiple losses, you can book it. Will Tech put the hurt on UGAG this year? Could be, that’s why they play the game. ‘Till then, you’re right, knowing that jerks like you will feel the pain this year when you stumble multiple times does bring pleasure to many fans - from Tech, Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, etc. - who tire of “Obnoxious Bulldog Fan(s).”

Whoever did the SI ranking needs to be fired. I’m not saying this because I’m a GT alum….there’s some simple logic here.
Today they released the ACC preview. GT (who remember they ranked 80th) was predicted to finish 3-9. I’m assuming this is with wins over Gardner-Webb, Duke, and Jax State.
So a team with one win all season against a FBS team is ranked ahead of 39 teams in the country?????
(10 bucks said Reggie Ball did the ranking and started counting 1, 2, 6, 7, 5, 9, 3)

I wouldn’t worry about SI predictions. They get it wrong EVERY year….. I can’t remember when any of their picks amounted to anything close to a educated guess. Their picks like their magazine has become a JOKE over the years. It still is a JOKE, they have picked UGA number 1 in the country, and again they have it wrong! I have NO idea how they analyze sports, I guess they just plan on selling one issue, that being the swimsuit issue which has nothing to do with sports. Imagine that!

Obnoxious Georgia Fan - It’s chumps like you that give UGA their bad name, oh yeah, and the 8 arrests. Let’s put money on it, UGA has AT LEAST 2 losses (smart money says 3). Then, you can go back to being a USC fan or an Ohio St. fan, whoever’s on top at the time. UGA has a good team this year, but they are a FAR cry from a national championship team. Saint Richt is probably kicking himself for telling his boys to break the rules and dance in the endzone. Now they can’t stop breaking the law and he’s still got the cocky little grin on his face. REAL HIGH CLASS GUY, HUH? But I guess that mirrors the bulk of the UGA fans, no class, no education, no real job, etc., etc. (BTW, etc. is another way of saying “and so on”). Good post - you’re representing your program about as good as your players are.

For those UGAG’s who think we don’t have talent….we ranked higher than you in recruiting two years ago….look it up on scout.com. While our overall talent is probably not as good as UGAG’s, GT is not lacking in talent. GT’s starting backfield this year, Nesbitt 4, Dwyer 4 (ranked ahead of the beloved celeb king), Roddy Jones 4(his backup Marcus Wright 3 but Parade All American with YES, read this right, over 3200 yards his Senior year in 5A Texas football, legit 4.3 speed), Greg Smith 2 ’s (his backup Embry Peeples 3 but perfect at the A back due to legit 4.4 speed) Star ranking don’t tell the whole story, but Paul Johnson NEVER had a recruit over two stars the entire time he was at Navy, in fact his recruiting rankings averaged 109!!!
UGAGers, before you talk ‘smack’ do ‘some’ research on the topic…but I will give you the seven wins in a row!! Until we beat you again you have bragging rights!!!!

No doubt it’s been a good year for UGA. We’ll see if they have what it take to win in football too. I’ll tell you why it matter if UGA doesn’t win the NC. They are ranked number one. The only way they don’t win it is if they choke. They have to lose to get unseated. While UGA’s schedule is very tough, it’s still no excuse. If you are good as you think you are, you’ll beat everyone, right? We can both agree that there will be mulitple losses, and that’s okay. MC - You are correct sir. UGA has finished above Tech in the final standings for however many years in a row it is. But I guess final standings are the only rankings that matter? If that’s the case, then why all this hype about UGA? You can’t honestly sit there and say that UGA is going to win a NC. And you also can’t sit there and say that if they don’t win it, it won’t be a HUGE disappointment. All I’m saying is don’t hold you breath, chief.

hey ramblin,
I don’t think UGA fans think that they will go 14-0. Because you don’t have to, LSU proved that last year. If they win the east and the secc game they have a really good shot at the mnc. That can be done with two losses.

Both the Tech fans and the UGA fans on this post act like 14 year olds. Who cares about how a player or players are ranked? If that was the case, why bother to play the games. The team with the highest ranked recruits wins But it’s the games that count—and all of you know who have won the last seven. That is fact—not speculation. Tech will win again sometimes. It may not be this year, but they will win again. So don’t act like such jerks—both Georgia and Tech fans. I am a Georgia fan and have been for the last fifty years. But I can still pull for Tech except when they play Georgia.

I don’t think anyone is saying that Tech is a better program right now. But let’s also remember that only a few years ago, Tech was. It’s all cyclical. I’ll give you guys credit. It is hilarious to watch the UGAY’S come on to the Tech board and tell everyone how great they are, how they have won seven in a row, and how they have Mr. Super Christian CMR. What a bunch of douchebags!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ya’ll are a STATE school with a huge enrollment in a top 5 HSFB talent pool in the country with taps into Fla HSFB, in my opinion #1 HS talent in the country, absolute NO EXCUSE in NOT being a top 5 program in the country EVERYYEAR. But…….
I have a good buddy, born and will die a true FSU fan who knows some ball and his comment is “as long as CMR is there, they’ll always choke it up and will not win the MNC” Couldn’t agree more, but I will say UGAY does finally recruit select national elite level talent and with CMR turning over the OC duties, they may stand a slightly better chance to win it all.
Bottom line, in my opinion, give me a CPJ, someone who will get on some a*, cuss em’ a little and get this and is not afraid to run some of their asses off, his way or the highway, gotta love old school, he doesn’t play it up to anyone, no blowhard here just a mighty fine football coach.
One last thing to remember, all sports run in cycles, highs and lows. (Braves pre 91, post 05) USC John Robinson days, student bodyright, to god knows what to 15 yrs later with Pete Carroll back on top, Nebraska, OU, Texas, FSU, THE U, Bama, LSU, you get the picture.

Mr. F. Smith, I will agree with that statement, but several other Asst. Coach losses contributed also, along with missing on some recruits, and the hiring of the Jeff Bowden, DUMB!!!
But, Jimbo Fisher is a proven winner, and I believe as the “cycle turns” FSU will be back to a top 5 in the not too long future, while UGAG will slip down a notch, too many arrests, bad pub, etc. can sting a program, FSU the prime example.
I do not think GT can be at the FSU/UGAG level, but as the “cycle turns” with CPJ, I gotta believe we will be MUCH more competetive, I just like the no nonsesnse, no BS type of coach, a straight shooter, who, by the way, calls the plays and DOES NOT WEAR HEADSETS!!!!

Bob, slowly so you can understand, there is this little thing called time, don’t know if you have heard of it, it measures hw long things take. Tech last won a national championship in 1990. Dogs last won one in 1980. That means that it has been 10 more years, one of the basic measurements of time, you keeping up, good, 10 more years since dogs have last won one. That is what a national championship has to do with Tech.

Yeah, split the 1990 NC w/ a team that actually lost a game that they were credited with winning thanks to refs that went to the same elementary school as Reggie Ball (infamous 5th down). GT handed Nebraska their a* that year and deserved BOTH. There had to be some CU HOMERS at the AP that year. Anyway, it was that garbage that eventually led to the BCS, or as you dawg fans call it the BullCrapSystem, for not letting a 2-loss team that didn’t win their conference play Ohio St last year…

To all Ga. Fans talking smack. When was your only national championship 1980. Funny, We have 3 national Championships according to NCAA Records and our last one was in 1990. SO , Until you actually win one, your just on a streak beating us and THAT WILL CHANGE SOON!

You have 1/2 NC to UGA’s consensus NC in the non-leather helmet era. Besides that UGA still owns your cute little .500 program. Accept your lowly place in the football world. It will be much easier on your overinflated egos and national championship mouths. The motto over at the Trade School should be OPEN WIDE!

I am so glad that you mites have something to cite when your self esteem gets low. That 1/2 NC seems to be such comfort to you. I know when you are 12-32 against UGA since 1964 you have to have something to make you feel good about yourselves. But have no fear. When Georgia State starts playing you can declare them your in state rival. You can probably beat them 3 or 4 times before they start kicking your butt too. Congrats to you on that lofty #80 ranking. But I bet those Duke fans enjoy looking down at you.

Oh yes old gold. THat vaunted Tech defense. Are you talking about the one that Stafford torched as a bumbling true freshman with less than 2 minutes to go? The one that let him snatch victory from the jaws of defeat? Or are you refering to the one last year where they watched his backside running down the field for a long touchdown? I’m sure Mr. Stafford is sooooooo worried about that vaunted big choke defense you field year in and year out.

As long as CMR is at UGA you will lose lose lose techmites. You’ll be recruiting overweight girls to fill your roster before long. Your program is dead. Start playing soccer or something. You have all the recruits you need right there on campus.

The 1990 NCAA Division I-A football season ended with a split championship and the ensuing controversy led to the creation of the Bowl Coalition, a precursor to the Bowl Championship Series. The title was split between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Buffaloes took the AP poll while the Yellow Jackets took the UPI poll by one vote over Colorado, 847 to 846.
There it is ccrider. Now STFU you stupid jackazz.

I see GTech’s season ticket sales lag even last year’s paltry results. The free hat, hotdog and Coke promotion has peaked out amongst the Tech faithful. What a pity!!!
The fan base was crying for a new coach. DRad responds with what seems to be a pretty good one in CPJ, and the Techies still won’t support the program monetarily. DRad must have known he had no shot at the LSU AD job, or he would have bolted back to Baton Rouge rather than renewing with you losers. What an embarrassment!!! Some things never change. LMAO!!!!
You guys are going to go broke in your Athletic Department. The debt service on the bonds for George O’Liary’s stadium renovation is staggering. Got anymore promotions (e.g. rap concerts) planned this year to attract more fans. I guess recruiting fans from Midtown is not going so well either.
Jackets, get ready for a long year and an 8th consecutive beatdown by the Dawgs in November.

Hey Liar, Cheater, Dealer,
Being the big time moneyman that you have claimed to be, one would think that you would be smart enough to understand the thing called ECONOMY. Maybe it’s just that you aren’t all that you claim to be.
Shut up and go away. We are tired of your claims and I am sure that any of your fellow dog fans would just as soon you shut up as well. You are giving your team and fans a bad name. And bring no substance to the board.
Please post one more time though and reveal the “major” company that you work for. I, as many other sensible readers, would like to make sure none of our money ever gets touched by your company.
For someone that claims to have a 20 plus year career in investing and finance, you do not display the maturity in your posts to support that claim. Come clean, give us proof, or shut up and go away until you can grow up.

All you idiots talking about how typical of tech fans to have to cheer for georgia’s failures are some hypocritical douchebags. You wouldn’t be in this thread if you didn’t give a crap about what is happening in the Tech program.
At the least you are intrigued by the PJ hire. That’s evident by all the posts about his offense and of course the idiotic posts of no talent at GT.
The constant dumb that comes from dawg fan is the reason most SEC schools and of course poor pitiful GT are interested in the failures of UGA.
It’s pretty unfortunate that you’ve got one of the most talented teams in the country and one of the most likeable head coaches on the sidelines yet arguably the least likeable fanbase in the country. Everybody hates you.
It’s constantly pot meet kettle. You talk about GT fans being elitists and know it alls yet all that is spewed from most UGA fans is how much better they are. Take it easy. Calm down a bit. Try to enjoy the fact that you’re relevant on a national stage for the first time since Herschel. But good GOD man quit shoving it down people’s throats and people might take you seriously.

Look at me! I write in cute little acronymns like LMAO and BTW!! Im so clever and internet savvy!! It doesn’t matter that im a 20 yr old punk at Athens Tech! Im too stupid to even get into ugay! But i does know how to use that there internet and use funny acronyms. I don’t think that the rivalry exists because Im a f@ggot bandwagon mutt (like 75% of their fans) and I don’t know any football besides the CMR era. But just wait until the next time GT wins, and I will say how lucky and stupid you all are. And once ugay has lost 2 games by Halloween, I will be off of the ugay bandwagon for this year, and start talking about NEXT YEAR! Everyone knows that a preseason #1 means we are guaranteed the MNC!! Remember, Im just a 20 yr old punk f@ggot at athens tech. Im learning to be a plumber, and smoking meth on the side. I truly suck at life, and have nothing better to do than try and aggravate tech fans. Im going to go shoot myself now b/c my 17 yr old girlfriend is sleeping with our meth dealer and blowing my step-dad. LMFAO

Wait a second. Im sorry guys. I was calling you classless, then I realized that im over here, in the tech blog, talking trash. Wow, I must be the person who has no class. I think that guys like MC, who curse and use symbols such as @ to spell words out are good examples of ugay fans. Same with you gaytechfans, what a CLEVER name. We should all realize that we are nothing but a bunch of inbred whitetrash, and that for us to call anyone classless is laughable.
