Jackets’ ranks thinning in spots

For the first time, Georgia Tech is starting to suffer injuries beyond nicks, bumps and bruises.

A colleague was at the morning practice, and I went to the afternoon practice.

A-backs Roddy Jones (hamstring) and Greg Smith (not sure) worked out on the side, and Embry Peeples left practice with what looked to me like heat-related issues.

And with wide receiver Correy Earls (hamstring) out for a third straight day, WR Tyler Melton, who has been impressive from the start of summer practice, went down in the middle with a shoulder problem. DE Jason Peters was wrenched in the middle of practice, too. Not sure what happened.

On the plus side, cornerback Jahi Word-Daniels, who tweaked a leg Saturday, is back in action. Also, RT David Brown returned Sunday and was back after missing Friday and Saturday to attend a funeral.

Nice play: Kamaron Riley picked a Jaybo Shaw pass to Daniel McKayhan in passing drills. A short out route to the left. Telegraphed from the beginning.

Scary moment: A-back Marcus Wright was off on a sweep, but before he could turn the corner, LB Sedric Griffin collared him — literally. Were it a game, it would have been a 15-yard penalty, a new rule this year. All horse-collar tackles are 15. Wright was slow to get up. Couldn’t tell what hurt, but he was back in short order.

When there was a rush, all quarterbacks had tremendous problems completing passes, partly because of the rush, partly for fault of their throws, and partly because coverage was good. The defense has a pretty good idea what’s coming. When finally Zach Fisher caught a pass, it was soon fumbled.

I did my best to leave the slang on the sideline, bros. (And sisses.)

Matt, you also forgot one little thing…THEY DID NOT FUMBLE ANY SNAP OR PITCH!!! The only fumble really came from the receiver having the ball stripped. There was a lot of optimism in today’s practice that you really failed to mention. It wasn’t all bad.

Damn. Just how many turnovers will VT get this year? That offense looks like an all you can eat turnover buffet for defenses like mine and UGA’s.

Matt, I am curious as to why you haven’t approached the concern of brian bohannon and jaybo Shaw’s dad being college roommates. if you have been watching the same practices that I have, the Washington kid is ruly a better quarterback for this offense but it seems like Bohannon is showing favoritism by letting Shaw, who is not the better QB, get more reps. Maybe you should interview the Washington kid who is the other freshmen QB.

Thanks for the language, I don’t think that the fumble problem will disappear this year. The vast majority of the players weren’t recruited with this offense in mind and are going to have a very steep learning curve.

By Matt Winkeljohn

August 5, 2008 7:18 AM | Link to this

Pine,

Two things:

If you think that Bohannon rather than Johnson determine % of reps to each quarterback, you need to re-think your opinion.

And if you think Washington has performed better to date than Shaw, then maybe somebody needs to ‘approach the concern’ of your possible relationship with Washington or perhaps someone in his family.

Johnson has mentioned Shaw in conversation with media, sometimes when asked specifically about Jaybo, sometimes when asked about QBs in general. He has not brought up Washington at any point where I was in attendance for interviews, and I haven’t seen any other reporters write Johnson comments about Washington. It would seem reasonable to assume there is a reason for that — although I haven’t approached it.

Matt - I’ve been concerned about the lack of experience on defense - esspecially the secondary. Your reports make it sound as if the defense looks very good. Is this because they are (very good) or simply because they know what is coming and thus can anticipate the play better? Thanks for the great reports. Keep up the good work.

By Matt Winkeljohn

August 5, 2008 8:24 AM | Link to this

Observer,

Tech lacks experience in the linebacking corps and in the secondary, no question about it on either front.

I think, though, the defense may be better than some expect, driven by experience — and talent — up front, the change in general philosophy, and talent even among the inexperienced. Not the Bears of ‘85, but not Navy, either.

Make no mistake, they have an edge against this offense because they’ve seen it so much dating back to spring, and the offense is still on a very steep learning curve … much steeper than that of the defense.

Thanks for the update Matt. I’m one die hard yellow jacket homer that is trying to change the atmosphere at Bobby Dodd. We have to many casual fans that would just rather sell their tickets than show up and make some noise for our boys. And, if the Jackets are 4-0 after 4 games, you might as well make it 6-0 since games 5 & 6 are vs. Duke & Gardner Webb.

Matt,

Much has been written about the difficulty opponents will have preparing for the Tech offense, but how will the Tech D prepare for other team’s Offense?

By GT92

August 5, 2008 11:19 AM | Link to this

Want to put a few bucks on that 4-0 or 6-0 delusion What? That is the problem here at Tech. Be real guys. This isn’t going to be seamless. If you think that VT won’t create turnovers against this offense still in it’s developing stages you are not in touch with reality. Miss St. will give it fits as well. Sylvester Croom is a damn good coach and knows how to prepare a defense to play against our new offense. Remember he played against and coached against this offense for years. If Tech fans don’t understand that this is a long term thing they will sabotage and undermine PJ before he ever gets started. And Paul Johnson is not a coach that is going to accept that from the base like Gailey did. He won’t think twice about giving you the finger as he finds another team to coach with more realistic expectations.

By GTfan4life

August 5, 2008 11:32 AM | Link to this

GT92 is right. Until our guys can run this offense like Navy and GSU did we can’t count any game on our schedule as a sure win. This offense has the potential to put the ball on the ground too many times. And what is it coaches say about that. The team with the fewest turnovers will win 95% of the time. To be 4-0 or 6-0 we would have to play flawless football especially against VT and Miss St. Laugh if you wish but we are not as good a football team as MSU at this stage of the game.

You can say all day we’re not as good as this team or that team, but the fact remains that we don’t know. I honestly don’t have high expectations this year, but that doesn’t mean I’m not excited. A new coach, a new system, new uniforms, new attitude, etc. I’ll back CPJ with blind loyalty…unless he continually runs a Reggie out there…and fails to EVER beat UGA.

CPJ has however much time he feels he needs. Just the fact that he has that “no nonsense” attitude and approach to coaching (and media) makes me like this guy already. Tack on the success he’s had everywhere he’s been and I’m down right giddy. Maybe not for this upcoming season, but for the program as a whole.

Kind of off the subject but have you seen the size of the WRs at UGA? 6 of them are 6’2”, 6’5”, 6’3”, 6’4”, 6’4”, and 6’2”. They are all over 200lbs and the slowest is 4.50. Dayuuum!

GT92, you might be right, but we also could easily be 2-2, or even 3-1. You see, most real GT fans are realistic about things, we sat through 6 years of Chantastic Gaileyball, so we will be happy with CPJ this first season, no matter what. But I feel like we at least have a coach who knows how to use talent, so I am optimistic, not pessimistic. But I’m also a realist so I’m guessing we will be either 6-6 or 7-5 at the end of the year.

I will support CPJ for several years, no matter what the record. He is a proven winner, but he needs the time (just as Nick Saban did at UA) to put in his system with his recruits.

I do think he will have some success early, but even if he does not, I am 100% behind him. I wish all GT fans would make this commitment, at least the ones that were happy to see Gailey go.

Obviously we were as good as we were going to get with Chan. Maybe it will be different with PJ. It wouldn’t surprise me to see this thing take 4-5 years and that is what scares me when you consider how our fans will react. I also think it is imperative that we maintain quality defenses. A guy made a really good point the other day that defense seems to suffer at schools with these spread option offenses because of the numbers required at the OL, QB, A, an B back positions. I checked as many of the teams I can think of that run this offense or it’s variations and he was right. It does appear that none of them play much defense. To include PJ teams of the past. Even Florida appears to have drastically dropped off on the defensive side of the ball. And that concerns me a little bit. Even if this offense runs like a swiss watch if we don’t play defense we will still be mired down in that 5,6,7 win category. Defense wins at this level. I can remember alot of games we won here because of defense but for the life of me I can’t pin down any where the offense totally carried the defense.

By Cremins

To heck with all this ‘realistic expectations’ junk. PJ’s gonna win the National Title - in every sport. And the World Series, Superbowl and will undoubtedly pass Mark Spitz for number of Olympic Golds…

Yeah, we’ll struggle this year, but I have faith. PJ’s teams will be tough and disciplined and improve throughout the season.

I think that by the Clemson game, we will start to see the offense click. So, you have Jax St., @BC, @ VT, Miss. St., Off Week, Duke, Gardner-Webb. If Tech can go 3-2 over this span, I think that would be pretty solid (4-1 being amazing). After 6 games (and an off week), I expect Tech’s offense will start to gel, and then it will be a race to 7 wins. I think it will be tough to get 4 wins with a schedule of @Clemson, UVA, FSU, @UNC, Miami, and @UGA, but it is possible. A bowl of any type will be a successful season, and I think 6-6 will still be a good season. I’ll even take a lesser record if by the end of the year the offense and defense are starting to play well.

Straight from the Wall Street Journal.

At the bottom: Engineering-school grads, who earn the highest starting salaries, yet see their paychecks expand just 76% by their career midpoints to $103,842 from $59,058.

Contrary to what many parents tell their children majoring in subjects like political science or philosophy, these degrees won’t necessarily leave you in the poorhouse. It can depend on what career path you choose to pursue with that degree. History-majors-turned-business-consultants earn a median total compensation of $104,000, similar to their counterparts who pursued a business major like economics — whose grads earn about $98,000 overall at midcareer, the PayScale study shows.

“With a liberal art’s degree, it’s what you make of it,” says Al Lee, director of qualitative analysis at PayScale. “If you’re motivated by income, then there are certainly careers in psychology that pay as well as careers out of engineering.”

Another GT urban myth just blew up in your faces. Oh well. We all knew you nerds talk sh&t about money to compensate for all the losing. LMAO!

Yep, it is what you make of it. That goes for anything in life moron. Whoever wrote that is speaking a life situation anyone could have wrote. Don’t sit there and even tell us that UGA grads make more money than GT grads. They DON’T. UGA grads spend there liberal arts degrees, if they even graduate, on landscaping and other crap. As a matter of fact, I go to GA STATE, and two of my psychology professors told me do not go into psychology.

Come on moron, liberal arts degrees make more than Engineering degrees, hah. I laugh at you. That is ridiculous. You may be able to make a claim that you find a few liberal arts majors that may make more than an average engineer. I guarantee you the richest liberal arts major does not make nearly the amount the richest engineering major makes. Also, I bet you the average of liberal arts salaries is not where near as high as the average of engineer salaries. Your statistic gives one selective stat, and most of the times you have to break something like that broad, no good stat you gave up into the aggregate to see the real differences.

How about this for you Mr. Mythbuster,

GASTATE got rated higher that UGA in best graduate schools in business, AGAIN, this year again at 5th in nation, where UGA is ranked umm.. oh yeah I don’t know because UGA didn’t make the top 10 :(. boo hoo. Right on GT80!

GT92, please don’t tell me you’re a motivational speaker. The games are played on the field, not in these blogs.

I have no idea why you think PJ’s system could take 4-5 years when it only took one season to change things at … NAVY!
PJ was at Navy as OC in ‘95 & ‘96 - take a look at what he did in those 2 seasons compared to any of the previous 15-20 before ‘95. He then leaves Navy for GSU, and returns as head coach 5 years later; plenty of time for Navy go right back into the %&@%! In his first season they were 2-10 - which was double the wins Navy had in the *two previous seasons combined. It is also THE ONLY losing season he has had in 11 seasons as a head coach. I’d say this provides more than enough reason for me to be optimistic taking into consideration who the first 6 opponents are, and all the key players both BC & VT lost from last years teams.

First of all, whoever decided to take my screen name: Not cool.

Secondly, I like that we have some fans here that are being more realistic about CPJ’s team maybe taking a few years to mature and become solid. But keep in mind that he heavily pushes the mentality that he will win NOW at all costs. The players hear that and get fired up, they chant “championship” in practice and are almost totally bought into the new system now. They want to learn it, execute it cleanly and win some games. Not that any of that is out of the ordinary for good college players or a good coach, but it’s worth factoring in, in my opinion, since I think it means they at least have heart and drive.

On another note, maybe CPJ is aware of the historic defense deficit? Maybe he plans to fix that…? I hope so.

I planned to ignore the above conversation about money, but I’m gonna throw in my two cents. Um, engineering or history…who cares? Do what you love, and if money is what it’s all about then prepare for an empty life! Believe it or not some people truly enjoy engineering. Oh, and by the way, Tech offers plenty of non-engineering degrees if no one’s ever told you. Try to be less childish.

I know someone who dropped out of college after 1 semester, and is filthy rich…so does that mean that ALL DROPOUTS make more money, you moron) 3. I bet that the engineer’s friends do not have their PE in engineering, b/c then they would be making quite a lot as well.

Exactly what percentage of history majors become business consultants?

Compare that to the number of engineering majors that become…engineers (and to the number who get their PE)

Plus, you are comparing national averages. GT students make more than the national average. ugay grads are lucky to even get a job. You also had ECON majors $5,000 below engineering…so what was your argument there? And when engineers start off making more money, that means that they can initially save more of it. Thanks to “Myth” for exposing the art of anecdotal evidence.

Kudos for taking that article and twisting it into something world altering. Who doesn’t know that history majors who change course and go into business consulting end up making good money? Care to take a guess as to what History majors average overall (not just those that have chosen to take a practical career path (and have the ability to do so)?

Moreover, even if taken at face value, the article only says that liberal arts majors aren’t forever destined to make less than engineers. So, they’ve selectively harvested a group of liberal arts majors who on average can compete with the salary of an AVERAGE engineer (in any field).

So, basically, this story says that engineers make more at first than anyone else but that liberal arts majors (who switch to practical careers) catch up by mid-career (i.e., 20 years down the road).

But what has happened in the meantime? The engineer has made 20k more per year for the first five years, 10k more per year for the next ten years, and 5k more per year for the next 5 years….total, the engineering major has made approximately $225k more than the liberal arts major. Only an idiot would claim that because the liberal arts major has “caught up” in salary by choosing a particular profession that liberal arts majors make as much money as engineers. Are you an idiot? Checkmate.

I must add a couple of notes that I haven’t seen, heard or read yet. The greatest thing about CPJ being here at GT, is the fact that he has the potential of being around for along time. The one thing that has hurt our program is the fact that the coaches don’t hang around long enough to build a strong program. CPJ has a system that is not used in the pros and so I would think that his career ambitions are to develop a dynasty at a division I school and make a name for himself on a National level. Thank GOD he chose TECH to be that place. Get excited Jackets. The best days are yet to come, and they are closer than they ever have been since Bobby Ross’ years.

Change the quality of coaching and improve the quality of player, which we have and the results will change for sure. Fear not GT Fans for the Fear of Failure is greater in the hearts of those who wear the Griffin GA logo on there helments while playing in Athens. This is why they post on this site than their own. Kick A$$ Jackets. We Believe in You!!!

Winkeljohn… you do an excellent job for Tech man… why don’t you and Chip switch it up for a bit? lol

Also.. I agree with many of you about the coaching being a difference in the last few years of the UGA/Tech game… however, we do have a pretty good coach ourselves… Good luck and we’ll line them up and see what happens come November

Hooked up with a pretty Indian girl on campus yesterday. Her father owns a Dairy Queen and her cousin is doing computer work overseas. Man does my future look bright.
