Better crowd on The Flats

Moving quickly today, but with the anticipation of plugging back in later more frequently than the first three days …

WR Correy Earls is on The Beach, the first injured player to be spotted there. He has a hamstring pull. He’s not having fun working out in the sun. He’s about 15 feet from me doing crunchers. He’s lifted a lot, stretched some, lifted more, done crunchers, etc. It stinks being injured.

Tyler Melton has worked in his spot with the No. 1s, for the most part. He’s made a couple more nice catches, too.

Marcus Wright is catching the ball today. He struggled yesterday.

Good turnout, probably 100 or so folks, give or take. Lot more pleasant than in the scorching heat Wednesday, or to a lesser degree yesterday. It’ll be warm this afternoon, though.

My opinion: Among QBs, Booker has thrown the best ball since practice started, and by a long shot. Shaw’s had stretches where he’s been impressive. Everybody else is up and down, although Nesbitt has fired a few impressive passes — generally when he throws over the middle. On the long throws down the sideline, Booker has been head and shoulders above.

Running the offense, making the pitches, the decisions to keep or give, Booker’s not in the top two or three. Again, my opinion.

More later.

Matt

Thanks for the highlights, Matt. If you get a chance, let us know how the fumble situation looks.

Matt:

Does Nesbitt’s issues with the sideline passes look to be arm strenght related or just accuracy/form related?

Well, that was interesting.

Fumbles became an issue late in practice, during 11-on-11 work, and Mr. Johnson was not happy at all. He hollered, and good. And a slew of backs had to stay after practice for extra work/punishment.

He went wiggo when Roddy Jones couldn’t handle a pitch that was a little off the mark, and it ended up on the ground. The pitch was the problem. Johnson wasn’t worried about specifics.

“Keep the ball off the ground!” he yelled. And there was more.

Adding injury to insult, CB Jahi Word-Daniels came up hobbling after the play, after going on the ground for the fumble. He did not practice after that. Don’t know the extent of the injury, but he left under his own power.

Can’t say about pictures of the new unis this afternoon. Our usual Tech photographer left yesterday for China to cover the Olympics. I’m not sure if another photographer will be present today.

With Nesbitt’s passes, arm strength doesn’t look like an issue to me. His aim isn’t always true, though, and the arc/trajectory he puts on the ball sometimes seems to be problematic.

Some shuffle in the O-line today. I noticed R.Fr. Joseph Gilbert moving from No. 1 LG to No. 1 RG in place of Jason Hill, and A.J. Smith working at No. 1 LG quite a bit. Could be experimental, of course.

DE Chris Crenshaw, a commit from Jefferson County High, was at practice.

So was Franklin, Ky., quarterback Courtney Dalcourt, who has not committed to a school.

Thanks for the updates Matt. Sounds like the team has a lot of work to accomplish in the next three and a half weeks. I would expect to see much improvement in the passing area and pitch execution during the next week. Also, I’m glad to hear the coaches get fired up when the players keep showing the same problems.

Good updates. This may be an impossible question to answer, but how did the backs that had to stay for extra work take it? a) Like it is their fault for not holding the ball and something they can avoid by improving or b) like the coach is overworking them?

Matt, go buy a camera and take a few pictures yourself. Its pretty easy. We can teach you if you need help.

Matt, I am a full time photographer and a huge Georgia Tech fan (and grad). I can cover practices if needed. Let me know if you need some coverage while your regular guy is in china.

Thank you for the updates Matt!

Were all the QB’s having trouble on the pitches or were some having more trouble than others?

On the pitches, it seems to go in cycles. Shaw, though, is good at the pitch game. He did a lot of that at times in his high school career.

Is it possible that a second or third string qb actually starts the season until one of the higher ranked ones hones their skills?

Carolina Jacket, here you are a real NAMBLA Man , I have several friends that need a ride to Tech games. Can you deliver “The Goods”? We are nearby the Tech campus, but works on Saturdays, so anything you can do would be appreciated. Congrats to Ander Tippett, a Tech alum for his Hall of Fame induction.

I love hearing that a coach gets fired up, when he wasn’t fired up before. It’s like the article said about the new DC. Being steady (angry or mute) all the time doesn’t get a point across. I think the new staff gets their point across just fine.

Matt, I’m loving the updates, even if I am a 14 hour flight away!

“Good turnout, probably 100 or so folks, give or take.” WHAT A BUNCH OF LOSERS!!!! You call 100 people a good turnout? I guess that is expected when you can’t even sell out your high school stadium. Enjoy another AVERAGE season and losing to UGA for the 8th straight time. Nerds.

Ron, 100 is great. If they are GT fans they are the best. We actually have other things to do then be overly consumed in football like you. that being said, coach Johnson will beat UGA, year after year. If it starts this year great. If we have to wait until next year so be it. We are bright, remember that. We can sense in all the tone of the UGA fans’ blogs, how truly scared they are.
